Bramblitt has suffered from epileptic seizures since he was a kid. Though it's a rare occurrence, these seizures led to his eventual total blindness. His visual impairment doesn't keep him from painting with a wide spectrum of color, though.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, he 'sees' colors that go unnoticed to the naked eye.

Using his hands in place of his eyes, John feels his way across the canvas. as he paints.

He uses one hand to feel the canvas and the other to fill it in with paint. Bramblitt uses textured paint that dries fast and leaves raised bumps for him to feel the result of his work.

He says, 'The raised lines are a map for me. It's a way to guide myself across the canvas.' In addition to the special paints, Bramblitt can also feel different colors.

According to the artist, white is thick like toothpaste, burnt sienna is clumpy like jelly, and black is runny like oil.

Ultimately, Bramblitt says, 'The way I paint is pretty much like the way anybody else paints, except that instead of using my eyes to see the painting I'm doing, I just use my hands.'

Remarkably, Bramblitt never painted until he was blind.

Painting was his form of therapy when he was filled with frustration and anger over his loss of sight.

It gave him a way to see the world without his vision.

'Without painting, things seem kind of disorganized,' said Bramblitt. 'But, whenever I paint, I feel really calm. I feel more like myself.'

Since losing his vision and discovering a joy for painting, he has also started a family with his wife Jackie.

And though he's never seen his son with his own eyes...

He knows exactly what he looks like through his sense of touch.
