SHANGRALA'S

RAY'S FREEDOM ROCK 2!

Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II, now a Des Moines resident who works as an ad/web designer, was a 19-year-old Iowa State University student who had seen the Greenfield rock many times before when, around Memorial Day in 1999, he decided to begin what has become an ongoing artistic tribute to America's veterans: The Freedom Rock.
Each year around Memorial Day, Ray uses white paint to cover over his previous year's work, then spends one to three weeks creating new scenes on his blank canvas.
He writes, "Just finished the 17th annual Freedom Rock painting yesterday. The front side is my version of the Gadsden Flag, but expanded. I wanted to show that each of our military men and women carry our country on their shoulders as they serve, protecting our "Life, Liberty, and pursuit of Happiness, and of course, the coiled rattlesnake with a ribbon stating; Don't Tread On Me.
The south side is an illustration of the Four Chaplains. Four U.S. Army Chaplains gave up their life jackets and prayed together when their transport ship, the U.S.A.T Dorchester was torpedoed eighty miles south of Greenland on February 3, 1943. The Chaplains came from different faiths and backgrounds.
On the north side of The Freedom Rock is Carlos "White Feather" Hathcock. Hathcock, a Marine Corps sniper with a service record of 93 confirmed kills, was most famous for shooting an enemy sniper through the enemy's own rifle scope, hitting him in the eye and killing him. After returning to active duty, Hathcock helped establish the Marine Corps Scout Sniper School, in Quantico, Virginia.
Below and left of Hathcock is a soldier representing the Combined Action Program, an operational initiative implemented in the Vietnam War that proved to be one of the most effective counterinsurgency tools developed during that conflict. My neighbor growing up was part of the the CAP.
Also on the north side is the helicopter (that I leave every year) with the ashes of approx. 75 Vietnam Veterans mixed into the green paint.
Finally, Old Glory, I wanted it to fall in the shape of The Freedom Rock and be large and proud as a big Thank You to all who serve."

"My little nugget helping me put finishing
touches on this year's Freedom Rock."

"To our men and women who've served our
country we can't thank you enough for the
freedoms we enjoy and I hope you know we
appreciate it the rest of the year as well."

Pass It On.

But you may also be the world to one person.
