SHANGRALA'S

NEWSPAPER SCULPTURE ART!

For Japanese Artist Chie Hitotsuyama, newspapers serve a whole different purpose. The Japanese artist doesn't use them to catch up on the sport and gossip. She turns them into incredibly realistic animal sculptures instead.
Hitotsuyama, born in Fuji, Shizuoka, Japan, started her career as an illustrator. She says, 'My grandfather owned and operated a paper mill. So, it was quite natural that I came to work with paper as my material of choice. For my work, I primarily use old discarded newspapers - ones that have become unwanted and no longer have a purpose to the original owner. I then make paper strings out of the old newspapers, just as the old wooden thawing machines did in my grandfather's factory, but instead, this time I use my hands.'
She makes them by densely rolling, twisting, and binding pieces of wet newspaper. The process is done entirely by hand and she even uses the colored print to enhance the contours and gradations of her subjects. From red-faced Japanese macaques to languishing lizards and even a giant dozing rhinoceros, Chie creates the most stunning sculptures from something that most of us simply throw in the trash. It's a brilliant way of turning bad news into something more positive.

Here's Some Photos Of Her Amazing Art Work. Enjoy! :)
