You're walking -- or driving or working or bicycling – along a busy highway that borders a university campus when you come upon a serious traffic accident that has just occurred. A motorcycle is lying on the roadway, in flames. A badly damaged automobile is stopped near the motorcycle, and the fire is beginning to spread to the car. Suddenly you notice that someone – probably the motorcycle driver – is pinned underneath the car. He isn't moving. For all you know, he might already be dead. But you don't know for sure. And the fire is spreading toward him. What are you going to do? For 14 or so passers-by Monday, the answer was immediate and unflinching: they rushed in to help. They tried to get him out from under the car, but he was stuck under there, and the fire was moving ever closer. A few people tried to life the car, but barely moved it. There was a moment of hesitation, and then a larger group -- including several hard hat-wearing construction workers – moved as one to the side of the car, and with all their collective might they lifted the 3,000-pound burning vehicle up onto two wheels while another construction worker pulled the unconscious young motorcycle driver out from under the car. I'm not making this up. You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-rCZjI3AFM And please notice the flames lapping at the young man's foot as they drag him to safety. Miraculously, the young man survived, with only broken bones, some road rash and a few bruises to show for his brush with death. Oh, and he has one other thing: a thankful heart. A day after his dramatic rescue he was still in the hospital recuperating from his injuries. But he sent his uncle out to thank the people who risked their lives to save his. "He knows that there are angels out there that saved his life," his uncle said. "People came together, risked their lives, to save him." He paused, then added: "Just... thank you... from all of us in the family." In my mind, there were two remarkable things that happened in those few anxious moments from the time the accident occurred until the time the young motorcyclist was dragged to safety. First was the heroic rush of people -- more than one -- to offer assistance despite the very real possibility of harm to themselves. I think of the gallant police officers and fire fighters who rushed IN to the twin towers on 9/11 when everyone else was rushing OUT, the office workers on the upper floors who ran UPSTAIRS to help others instead of following their natural self-protective impulses to rush DOWN. I'm awed and inspired by such compassionate courage. I don't know that I possess it – and quite frankly, it's OK with me if I never find out for sure -- but I'm grateful to live in a world in which so many do. The second remarkable thing that happened that morning was that all of these brave, caring people managed to work together to save a life. It would not have happened if they had not. One or two people couldn't lift that car. Even six or seven -- they tried. It took all of them pushing together to get the car up on two wheels so the injured young man could be moved out of the way. There's a lesson in that for all of us, I think. No matter how strong we are individually, we are infinitely stronger in the face of adversity if we work together. Like the young man's uncle said: "A lot of times things happen these days that shake our faith in humanity. But here we have not one person, not two people, but nearly a dozen people rushing together to a burning scene to lift a thousand-pound car. That is absolutely incredible." -- Joseph Walker __________________________________________________ Joseph is a Heartwarmer Gem from Utah. About a century ago Stephen Grellat was led one day to go out to a heavily forested area of America to preach. It was a strong inward compulsion of the Holy Spirit. When he arrived at the loggers' camp, he found they had moved to another location, and their shanties were deserted. However, he was so sure he was sent by God that he went into an empty shanty and preached to the bare walls the sermon God had placed upon his heart. He then returned to his home, He could never understand why God would send him to preach to an empty shanty. Many years later, as he walked across a bridge, a man grasped his arm, "I found you at last," the man said. "I think you are mistaken," said Mr. Grellat. "No, Didn't you preach in an empty shanty in the woods years ago?" "Yes," Mr. Grellat admitted, "but no one was there." "I was the foreman in charge of the loggers," the stranger explained. "We had moved to a new location, before long I realized I'd left one of my tools behind. I returned to get it and heard a voice in one of the shanties, I peered through a crack between the logs and saw you. You never saw me, but I listened to the rest of the sermon, God touched my heart that day and I became so convicted of my sins, that after some time I purchased a Bible, repented of my sins, and became a Christian, then I began to win my men to Christ. Your sermon has led over a thousand people to Christ, and three of them have gone on to become missionaries!" = Wesley L Duewel -<>- /:""| .@@@@@, |: 66|_ @@@@@@@@, C _) aa`@@@@@@ \ ._| (_ ?@@@@ ) / =' @@@@" /`\\ \(``` || |Y| //`\ ."~~~~~". || |#| / | || | .:. | || |#| \ | || A | /6 6\ | || |#| / | || |~|_|_\ e /_|_ .@@@@, :| |=: / | |\ |_|)___`"`___(8 aa`@@@, ||_|,| | |_| \ |~~~~~~~~~| = `@@@ \)))|| | ((( | \_________/ )_/`@' |~~~`-`~~~| `~\~~~~~~| |/ /_\ \| / || @ | | `\ / ()/___\() | || @ |_________| ( || ||~~~~~|| /~|| "` |_________| | || || || /__W_\ | || | || || || ||| |_||__ __|_|| ||_____|| _||| jgs (____)) (:;:;)) ||-----|| ((___) >Parents Have Dreams Too August 25, 2006 This is about how my gesture of booking an air ticket for my father, his maiden flight, brought forth a rush of emotions and made me realize how much we all take for granted when it comes to our parents. My parents left for our native place on Thursday and we went to the airport to see them off. In fact, my father, who retired from Indian Government service, had never traveled by air before, so I just took this opportunity to make his experience wonderful. In spite of being asked to book tickets by train, I got them tickets on Jet Airways. The moment I handed over the tickets to him, he was surprised to see that I had booked them by air. The excitement was very apparent on his face, waiting for the time of travel. Just like a schoolboy, he was preparing himself on that day. We all went to the airport together, right from using the trolley for his luggage, the baggage check-in and asking for a window seat and waiting restlessly for the security check-in to happen. He was thoroughly enjoying himself and I, too, was overcome with joy watching him experience all these things. As they were about to go in for the security check-in, he walked up to me with tears in his eyes and thanked me. He became very emotional and it was not as if I had done something great, but the fact that this meant a great deal to him. When he said thanks, I told him there was no need to thank me. But later, thinking about the entire incident, I looked back at my life. As a child, how many dreams did our parents have that came true? Without understanding the financial situation, we, as children, asked for cricket bats, dresses, toys, outings, etc. Irrespective of their affordability, they catered to all our needs. Did we ever think about the sacrifices they had to make to accommodate many of our wishes? Did we ever say thanks for all that they have done for us? Same way today, when it comes to our children, we always think that we should put them in a good school. Regardless of the amount of donation, we will ensure that we will have to give the child the best: theme parks, toys, etc. But we tend to forget that our parents have sacrificed a lot for our sake to see us happy, so it is our responsibility to ensure that their dreams are realized and what they failed to see when they were young, it is our responsibility to ensure that they experience all those and their life is complete. Many times, when my parents asked me some questions, I have actually answered back without patience. When my daughter asks me something, I have been very polite in answering. Now I realize how they must have felt at those moments. Let us realize that old age is a second childhood and just as we take care of our children, the same attention and same care needs to be given to our parents and elders. Rather than my dad saying thank you to me, I would want to say I'm sorry for making him wait so long for this small dream. I do realize how much he has sacrificed for my sake and I will do my best to give the best possible attention to all their wishes. Just because they are old does not mean that they have to give up everything and keep sacrificing for their grandchildren also. They have wishes, too. --- Written in 2006 by Venkatesh Balasubramanian I work as a Project Manager in an IT Consulting Firm in India. T unknown : * :_| '._.' L >THE BRICK A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no children appeared. Instead, a brick smashed into the Jag's side door! He slammed on the brakes and backed the Jag back to the spot where the brick had been thrown. The angry driver then jumped out of the car, grabbed the nearest kid and pushed him up against a parked car shouting, "What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing? That's a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?" The young boy was apologetic. "Please, mister...please, I'm sorry but I didn't know what else to do," He pleaded. "I threw the brick because no one else would stop..." With tears dripping down his face and off his chin, the youth pointed to a spot just around a parked car. "It's my brother, "he said. "He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up." Now sobbing, the boy asked the stunned executive, "Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me." Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He hurriedly lifted the handicapped boy back into the wheelchair, then took out a linen handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh scrapes and cuts. A quick look told him everything was going to be okay. "Thank you and may God bless you," the grateful child told the stranger. Too shook up for words, the man simply watched the boy push his wheelchair-bound brother down the sidewalk toward their home. It was a long, slow walk back to the Jaguar. The damage was very noticeable, but the driver never bothered to repair the dented side door. He kept the dent there to remind him of this message: "Don't go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention!" God whispers in our souls and speaks to our hearts. Sometimes when we don't have time to listen, He has to throw a brick at us. It's our choice to listen or not. -<>- hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses& & hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&hu &hugs&kisses s&h es&hugs&kisses&hugs&kiss gs&kisse es&h sses&hugs&kisses&hugs&k s&kiss ses& isses&hugs&kisses&hugs &kiss s&kis sses kisses&hugs&kisses&hu ugs&kiss s&ki isse &kisses&hugs&kisses&h &hugs&kiss gs&k kiss s&kisses&hugs&kisses& es&hugs&kis ugs& &kis gs&kisses&hugs&kisses sses&hugs&k hugs s&ki ugs&kisses&hugs&kisse kisses&hugs &hug gs&k hugs&kisses&hugs&kiss s&kisses&hu s&hu ugs& &hugs&kisses&hugs&kis ugs&kisses& es&h hugs s&hugs&kisses&hugs& i hugs&kisse ses& &hug es&hugs&kisses&hug k hugs&kis sses s&hu ses&hugs&kisses&h & hugs& isse es&h sses&hugs&kisse s& &kiss s gs&ki hugs&kis s ugs&kisse sses&hugs&ki i ses&h k k sses& & &kis gs&kisses&hug isses&hugs s&hugs&kisse s s&kis gs&kisses&h &kisses&hug es&hugs&kisses g gs&ki ugs&kisses& s&kisses&hu ses&hugs&kisses u ugs&ki ugs&kisse ugs&kisses&h sses&hugs&kisses h hugs&k hugs&kiss hugs&kisses& isses&h gs&kisses& &hugs&k hugs&ki s&hugs&kisses kisses ugs&kisses s&hugs& &hugs&k es&hugs&kisse hugs&kisse es&hugs& &hugs sses&hugs&kiss s&kiss &hugs&kiss ses&hugs s&hug isses&hugs&kis gs&kiss s&hugs&kis sses&hugs s&h &kisses&hugs&ki ugs&kisses&hugs& i isses&hug es& s&kisses&hugs&k hugs&kisses&hug k kisses&hug e ugs&kisses&hugs& &hugs&kisses&h & &kisses&hu hugs&kisses&hugs s&hugs&kisse s s&kisses&hu s&hugs&kisses g gs&kisses&h es&hugs&kisse u ugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&h -- Matt Ryan >THE BEAUTIFUL COLOR OF LOVE What color is God, Asked the child with skin so fair Is he white like me, Does he have light hair? When he's home, he takes good care of his house and yard, keeps beautiful shrub roses, and is friendly with our family and others on our block. Mostly, he spends time with his family -- but he makes a difference all around our neighborhood. Before we moved in, our house was rented to a family of four active children and two absent parents. To reduce noise and protect his yard from damage, Steve built a tall fence between our back yards. The fence was cedar boards, with dog-eared pickets on alternating sides of horizontal rails. Our local lumberyard sells this pattern in sections, under the name "Good Neighbor." It was February in Minnesota when we arrived, a time most people stay indoors day and night due to the cold weather. We had little chance to meet our neighbors. As spring came and the weather warmed, we started to get acquainted. To the south of us are Ray and Rosie, who have lived in their house over 50 years and are both retired. To the north is Steve. As Steve and I talked, we could only see each other if we were in our front yards. The fence in back was too tall for either of us to see over. Before too long, it was obvious the fence was getting in the way of a new friendship. But it belonged to Steve, so I didn't say anything. One day after working overtime for several days, Steve had a weekday off at the same time I did. He suggested we take the fence down in sections, cut two feet off the bottom edge, shorten the posts, and put the sections back up. That would let us see and hear each other without removing the fence completely. The project only took a few hours, and the results were great. Inspired by the new look, I built a matching cedar fence for the other open sides of our yard. The pickets were only available in six-foot lengths, so I cut them all to four feet and saved the scrap. Steve took all the remaining two-foot boards and started building birdhouses. By the time he finished using all the leftover cedar, he had made 99 nesting boxes for songbirds. He gave them away all over our neighborhood. In his poem "Mending Wall," Robert Frost wrote a line that became famous: "Good fences make good neighbors." He meant that by taking care of our own homes, we show our respect for the homes of others. But Steve extended his caretaking far beyond the borders of his property lines, giving useful ornaments to people nearby, and bringing new shelter to the birds. Seeing the example Steve has set, I think Frost had it backward. Good neighbors make good fences -- and good friends. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From LaughtAndLift: "Jesus gives us real eyes so we can realize where the real lies." - Michael McInerny Note from Chris: This one was too good not to share... -Chris W __ __ [ ] |::||::| 3 ._. |::||::| ._. /| |:| ._. |::||::| |/| \|// / |:|_|/| |::||::|_ |/| -( )-| |:|"|/|_|::||::|\|_|/| _ J V | |:|"|/|||::||::|\|||/||:| ___ ' / ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \ \/ | ~~~ ~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ >Remember 9-11 (By Steve Troxel, God's Daily Word Ministries, www.gdwm.org) The world has changed, and the change is certain to continue. Our feeling of security, both physical and economical, is not the same as it once was. And though our security may return for a season, it will surely fade with the next news report or economic downturn. And yet, there is hope! Say the numbers 9-11 and nearly everyone in the world knows the exact reference - September 11th, 2001; a day of pure terror. Memorial pools of water now occupy the ground where two massive 110 story towers once stood. It's hard to believe it's been ten years. Like most of you I vividly remember watching the reports in disbelief. How could this happen, and what does it all mean? The world has changed. On September 12th, 2001, I wrote a message which tried to bring some comfort and help turn our focus toward a loving God. In doing so it was necessary to help us take our eyes off the unstable security and pleasure of the world. The next three paragraphs are from that message. 1 Corinthians 7:29,31 "What I mean, brothers, is that the time is short. From now on...those who use the things of the world, {use them} as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away." If there is any good to come out of the evil actions of yesterday, it will only be as we resolve to "fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen." We must allow these images to firmly establish that "what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal" (2 Corinthians 4:18). It's time we experience a true revival and do ALL as unto the Lord. We can no longer give our lives to what is temporary and passing away. It's time we unashamedly worship Him and follow where He leads. It's time we draw close to His presence and remember the eternal. For several Sundays after 9-11 church attendance climbed to new highs. People were scared and confused, hoping to find answers with God. Unfortunately, it did not take long for this portion of life to return to "normal." The questions faded and focus changed before any answers had the chance set; only a few would experience a true revival. The world has changed and continues to change. And yet, there is hope! Of course, hope is found in the one thing which does not change. It is my prayer today that we would reflect back to a time when we were seeking answers, to a time when priorities seemed clear, to a time when our focus was on the eternal. Our life needs a revival. For the changes which lie ahead we will require a true and lasting revival. Let's be careful to not allow our life to return to a normal which is distant from God. Let's focus hard on what is lasting as we remember 9-11. -<>- __ /_/\/\ \_\ / /_/ \ \_\/\ \ \_\/ unknown >My Most Precious Possession In a devotional in the Mississippi Baptist Record in May 1979, Bill Rittenhouse wrote that while on a vacation trip, he found a suitcase on the side of the road. Trying to determine who owned it, he opened the suitcase, only to find the usual items you would expect to find in a man's luggage. There was only one clue as to who the owner was: a white box with a rubber band around it had a $20 gold piece between two layers of cotton inside. Around the gold piece was a band with the words, "Twenty years loyal and faithful service" on one side. On the other was printed "Presented to Otis Sampson by Northwestern States Portland Cement Company." No city was named. Bro. Rittenhouse mailed seventy-five letters before he received a reply from a Portland Cement Company, saying that several years before there had been a Mr. Otis Sampson in their employment, but that he had retired. They sent his address. Rittenhouse wrote Mr. Sampson to tell him that he had his suitcase. Mr. Sampson replied immediately, identifying the contents. He asked that Rittenhouse dispose of the suitcase and all contents, except the gold piece. Several times in the letter, Mr. Sampson referred to the gold piece as his "most precious possession." So Bro. Rittenhouse returned the gold piece, and used the opportunity to tell Mr. Sampson of his most precious possession - his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He didn't hear from Mr. Sampson until a year later, when he sent a Christmas box to the Rittenhouse family. Inside the box was a smaller white box with a rubber band around it and the $20 gold piece inside. A note was enclosed, which read: "Last Sunday my wife and I were baptized in a little church here in Colorado. We want you to have the gold piece to carry with you at all times. We are two old people; I'm 74 years old, my wife is 72. You are the first one who told us of Jesus Christ. Now He is our most precious possession." I hear the morning doves coo Another restful night is through, A glorious sunrise for me waits, Out near the rose garden gate. God has painted the skies and land With a gentle gesture of his hands And the autumn colors of the leaves Are a wonderland of delight to see. I take my seat in the old wicker chair And marvel at sights around me there, I tremble but not from the cold As God's majestic miracles unfold. The countryside like a kaleidoscope Reflects new colors and inspiring hope, I witness God painting from his palette And am awed by the pure majesty of it. Dark clouds part making room for hues Of sun struck gold, orange and blues And as sunbeams warm my smiling face I prayerfully thank God for his grace. I am reluctant to leave God's show But it's time to get ready to go As I rise to bid farewell to the dawn I pray for this earth we live on. ©Written by: Kenneth J.
