Slowly shaking my seven-year-old head yes, I watched as he reached down and began rummaging through his dirty old knapsack. I stood, silently watching as the elderly hobo began to remove various items from the brown gunny sack he carried over his shoulder. "Here it is sonny," he yelled out with excitement, as he held out both his shaking hands. "What is that thing? I ain't never seen no kind of paper card thing like that before and it's got a stamp on it. It is like a letter?" I inquired. "It's called a post card." I reached out, took the dirty wrinkled postcard from his hand and I carefully looked at both sides. Taking my time, I inspected every inch of this strange new item. "Nov 27, 1951" was stamped on the back, covering part of the writing. Once again, having run away from the orphanage, I had very little choice but to live beneath the railroad overpass. The word about the orphanage was that this was where an abundance of food could always be found. There was a never-ending flow of tramps and hobos almost on an hourly basis. "Can you please read that to me?" "Your kinda old mister, don't you know how to read nothin'?" Slowly, the old man lowered his eyes to the ground and hung his head. He folded his hands in front of his body and he just stood there, not saying a word. "I'm sorry if I said something wrong," I mumbled. Raising the card, I began to read the large print, "CARL, GLAD YOU MADE IT TO AMERICA. I KNOW YOU WILL BE A SUCCESS IN SUCH A WONDERFUL PLACE. LOVE MINI" "Who's Mini?" I asked the man. "She's my sister. She lives in Paris." "I know where that is. It's over the ocean." Shaking his head back and forth, I watched as tears slowly rolled down the old man's dirty cheeks. "Thank you for the beans mister. It sure was good of you to share," I said, as I held the post card out toward him. Reaching out, he took the dirty card and began stuffing it into his torn wool over shirt pocket. "I can teach you the ABCs, real fast, so you can read all by yourself, if you want." Shaking his head no, he turned and walked back over to the large fire barrel and began to warm his hands. The orphanage matrons had always told me that I was "not the brightest bulb on the tree." But even considering that, I knew when someone wanted or did not want to talk. Keeping my mouth shut, I walked over to the rusty fifty-five gallon drum and just stood there, not saying a word. Several minutes later, the old man began to sing. It was one of the most beautiful voices I had ever heard. I had listened to many people sing on the little black and white Zenith television at the orphanage, but nothing I had ever heard was as beautiful as the voice coming from the old man. Hearing something behind me, I turned around and saw two railroad guards, blackjacks in hand, running toward us. All at once they suddenly stopped and began to listen to the singing. I could tell that they too were amazed by such a wonderful and joyous sound. It was like nothing I had ever heard before. I stood waiting for the men to begin beating the two of us for hiding beneath the overpass. For almost a minute or two the two guards did not move a muscle. One of the men tapped his blackjack on the stomach of the other guard and motioned with his head, in a backwards direction. The two of them turned and began walking away, heading back toward the railroad yard. When the old man stopped singing, I looked over at him and said, "You really need to be on television mister. Really you do." "I'll never sing to the public again," he replied. "Why not?" "I was forced to sing for the Germans and I'll never do that again." As he spoke, he began to remove his wool shirt. Laying it on the ground, he rolled up his sleeve and held out his arm. Tattooed on his arm was a long line of somewhat faded numbers. "Why would you put something like that on your arm? Everyone else I know puts a picture." Once again, tears began to roll down the old man's cheeks. He reached over, picked up his over-shirt and stuffed it into his gunny-sack. Throwing it over his shoulder he began walking down the railroad tracks. For ten minutes I stood watching as the old man, with the most beautiful voice, disappeared into the distance. -- Roger Dean Kiser ____________________________________________ We have asked renowned writer and friend, Roger Kiser, to take over a project that will enable ALL writers to see their works published in a real book -- yes, a book made of paper with pages you actually turn! The beauty of this project is that everyone who submits a story will get published. The only thing we ask is that you purchase at least one copy of the book for $22.95 for each of your stories you want to see included in the book. Mazzella I read recently in an inspirational book that all of us have not just one guardian angel watching over us, but many such angels all though our days. This made me smile at the love God must have for us all to give us so much unseen help in our lives. It also made me feel a bit self-conscious about having angels watching over my every choice and action. In the end, however, I decided that I would just do my best moment by moment and day by day to make my guardian angels smile. What would you do to make your guardian angels smile? Would you be polite to the person being rude to you and return kindness for anger and love for hate? Would you share part of the money you earn with those who are in great need and continue to trust in God to meet all your needs as well? Would you slow down your walk long enough to smell a newly blooming flower or freshly blossoming Cherry tree? Would you also stop to pick up a piece of trash littering the ground and make the world a bit more beautiful? Would you visit the sick, disabled, and elderly and give them not only your time but your joy and love as well? Would you sing out loud as you walk down the street and share your delight in being alive in spite of any looks others might give you? Would you hug your children and tell them how much you love them no matter how big they get or old they are? Would you bless this world with your smile, your kind words, your optimism, your enthusiasm, your laughter, your joy, your light, your talents, your energy, your cheerfulness, and your love? Would you do your best moment by moment, all though your day, and all though your life to be the person God meant for you to be? I hope that all your answers were, Yes! I hope God and Heaven always look down on your life with joy and pride. And I hope that everyday you make your angels smile. -<>- (\ \\ \\ \\ <*****> \\ .=^=. .""". .=^=. \\ //```\\(/a a\)//```\\ \\{{ ( L ) }} \\{ _ __ \ = / }} \\/@.---,/'-'\,---. }} /(&\ |`-._/\_.-'| \ }} (@ \&\| || |\ \}} {{ \ |___o()o___| > )} {{ `|__((<>))__|` .'}} {{ \ o\/o /`` }} {{ ,'\ || /\', }} {{.' \ || / | '.}} /'.||.' / / // / ( /( / jgs / / \ \ / / \ \ ___/ _/ __\ _\ (______) (______) >A Writer Bill Walker wildbill6807@yahoo.com I was thinking about this fellow this morning, have thought much about him in the past. I wonder how he got along with cotton picken, nit picken, lint picking editors? He was a writer for the Omaha Newspaper at one time. Wonder if he had troubles with those people about is this the right way, the proper way and so on to say, "went fishing this morning." I do that myself a lot you know.. Not the fishing, but I leave off a word or to some cotton picken, nit picken, lint picker of editor thinks just got to be there. Just like I now left out "an" in front of "editor" there. I was talking to Friend Keith about this fellow one time. Friend Keith knew him, that is in this here fellow's writing days, Mr. Guy Williams of long ago. When I knew about Mr.Williams he was living the good life. Down around abouts Taney County, God's country Missouri. You know it took six days to make the world. then God rested. The next week God made God's county. The Ozarks of Missouri and Arkansas. Anyways Mr.and Mrs Guy Williams had moved to Taney County. Guy wrote a page for the Omaha Sunday paper. He called it, I think a letter from the Wren House. He told about something going on around those parts. It wasn't one of those "Flash this just in, late breaking news reports." It was on the little things like the fishing is good, or we drove over to the next wide spot in the road about 5 miles from here yesterday. Spent the day watching a boy with a new puppy... We had taken a sack lunch. Puppy ate most of it. Things like that would be his weekly story. Guy had a way, a style of writing, you knew it was Guy Williams story. He didn't need to put his name on it. You just knew Guy Williams wrote it. No cotton picken, nit picken, lint picker better miss with it. Those people would have killed it. I learned a lot by reading Guy Williams. He knew how to write a story, that made you do two things. First was to read it. Then you wanted to come back next week to read the story of the week, and find out what was going on in and abouts God's country,,,, Taney County, Missouri. -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment: Father's Love Letter http://jbreck.com/ourfathersloveletter.html Spring In The Netherlands http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/netherlands.html Moses Bridge! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/mosesbridge.html Unusual Photos! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/unusual.html Canyon Skywalk! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/skywalk.html Beautiful Flowers! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/bflowers.html Festival Of Citrus! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/orangefest.html Butchart Gardens! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/bgardens.html Creation Museum! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/creationmuseum.html Montreal Gardens! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/montreal.html -<>- >From Our Friend Geniann :) SUNDAY'S FASTEST SERMON EVER!! http://www.youtube.com/embed/WGnEuGwvXqU?rel=0 --- ...Do love this one! Three steel tanks, each three hundred foot tall and fifty feet wide, would be joined by a latticework of pipes. The living accommodation platform would go on top and the tanks would eventually be sunk in the icy waters of the North Sea. For most of the year the sun rose and set while I was at work. We worked twelve-hour shifts in a bleak industrial landscape. The work was hard, the men were harder. Often coming home at the end of the day it was a struggle to find myself again, to remember I was a young husband and a new father. The job paid the bills, but it fairly scoured the soul. I was part of a team of four junior engineers. Mostly we were gophers and holders for the big boys. As part of our tool kits we had magnetic clamps (two square magnets on an aluminium strip handle, like big brackets) and paint pens (like giant tooth paste tubes full of paint, with a ball-point on the end so you could write technical data on the metal). When we weren't needed for anything, or when the weather was too foul, we retired to our "office". One of my workmates, Wullie, would come into the porta-cabin we inhabited on his tea break. He would open the door of his metal locker and pull a battered plastic chair behind it. Still in his waterproofs and wearing his safety helmet and boots Wullie would take out a piece of canvas. Using the magnetic clamps he would fix his canvas to inside of his locker door. Until they got used to him folk would give Wullie some strange looks and make less than charitable comments. Wullie's response was always a smile and a kind word. Using a piece of scrap iron as a palate Wullie would start mixing the paint from the different coloured paint pens. Then, for the ten minutes he had left, he would take paint brushes from his locker, and lose himself in his painting. While his workmates boasted about their sexual conquests or how much they'd drank at the weekend, Wullie created works of art. As we were on the Atlantic coast, with the Western Isles nearby, he painted seascapes. Why do I remember this? Because I envied Wullie and, in a way he got me through the whole experience. I never saw him again after the rig was built, but twenty-some years later I still think of him with admiration. He taught me there was beauty everywhere. There never was a bleaker place than that construction site, but Wullie managed to find beauty in it. He found it by making it. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: _......._ :_ _: ,______ ''''''' ______, {_=_-=._'-. .-"""""-. .-'_.-=_=_} {-=_- `'.\ / \ /.'` =_-=} {-_= \\| (_((_(( |// =_-} {-_=- \( (* *) )/ =-_=} {_-=_=- ) ) ^ ( ( -=_=-_} {_=_-=- (_\ '-' /_) -=-_=_} {_-_=_ `) (` -_=_} {_-= .-`\ /`-. -=_} {_= / ^ \ =_} '-/ _.=. .=._ \-' \/_) ` (_\/ /\ /\ jgs / '. .' \ / '.' \ / \ / \ ';';';';';';';';';' | | | | | | |-|-| / / \ \ `"` `"` >THE FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY The Rev. Weazie immediately put her hands behind her, went outside, and announced, "I don't have a cookie behind my back!" -- Susan Meadors (family of Weazie) of Georgetown, Kentucky Another Weazie story: Weazie was watching her daddy turn over the soil in the garden. All of a sudden she exclaimed, "Good for you, Daddy! I found a worm!" .-""-. _______ .-""-. .'_.-. | ,*********, | .-._'. / _/ / **` `** \ \_ \ /.--.' | | **,;;;;;,** | | '.--.\ / .-`-| | ;//;/;/;\\; | |-`-. \ ;.--': | | /;/;/;//\\;\\ | | :'--.; | _\.'-| | ((;(/;/; \;\);) | |-'./_ | ;_.-'/: | | );)) _ _ (;(( | | :\'-._; | | _:-'\ \(((( \ );))/ /'-:_ | | ; .:` '._ \ );))\ " /(((( / _.' `:. ; |-` '-.;_ `-\(;(;((\ = /););))/-` _;.-' `-| ; / .'\ |`'\ );));)/`---`\((;(((./`'| /'. \ ; | .' / `'.\-((((((\ /))));) \.'` \ '. | ;/ /\_/-`-/ ););)| , |;(;(( \` -\_/\ \; |.' .| `;/ (;(|'==/|\=='|);) \;` |. Her daughter Sippy had been in kindergarten a couple of months and seemed to really enjoy it. She was a sweet, quiet, little girl, and never, as far as Susan knew, caused her teacher a bit of trouble. One day she came home a little on the downcast side. When Susan asked her what was wrong, she replied, "Mama, Mrs. H never lets me sit in the thinking chair. Doesn't she know I can think?" (Susan told the story to the teacher who was a family friend. It was re-named the time-out chair.) Kelly, 11, is extremely fond of sweets, and even likes to eat plain sugar (much to her mother's chagrin). When she was 8, someone noticed this and asked her, "So you have a sweet tooth, huh?" Kelly responded, "All my teeth are sugar teeth!" -- Debbi Armstrong (mother of Kelly) of Orlando, Florida Ember, 2, is being potty trained. Her grandmother babysat her one weekend and her cousin, Daniel, 19 months, came to visit. Ember was in the bathroom sitting on the potty and Daniel walked in the door. Ember said, "Daniel, go back in there, I'm on the potty" but he just looked at her and grinned. So Gram said, "Daniel, go find your mommy" but he just grinned and stood there. After a few minutes, Ember really wanted Daniel to leave. She held up her fingers and said, "Daniel, 1 - 2 - 3 - 4, you better mind me right now", and he turned and walked out. Ember looked at Gram and said, "He's a good boy, he minds real good!" -- Suzette Temple (Gram) of Lufkin, Texas Sean, 7, and Barbie, 4, were spending the day with their grandmother, Barbara. They were outside taking turns driving the motorized car in the loop. It was Sean's turn to drive, and Barbie's to be the passenger. Barbie got upset when she couldn't remain the driver, and she tried to hide behind the neighbors' brick pillar by the street. Sean kept calling her over to ride with him and after much coaxing, she said to her Grandmother, "OK Gammie, but, you'll have to carry me over there, because I have a broken leg." Gammie quickly came back with, "I would but, I can't because I have a broken back." Rather than miss the fun, she started walking the 3 feet to the car, and responded with, "That's OK, I can walk now, my leg is all better." -- Barbara Gocus (Gammie) of Clackamas, Oregon. ========================================================== _..._ .~ `~. / } \ _.'`~~/ {_,} -( ,'-,___.' .-. / |_ /| __| |__ / ` |_/ [__ __] / \ / | | / '--;_ | | _\ `\ | | / |`-.___. / | | ^^^jgs^^^`--`------'`--`^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ >-->Hello God...
