I was destined to a zig-zag pattern of one good day, one off day. On the off days, I was a basketcase. I couldn't think, organize, follow through, work, direct children, or butter bread. The hot flashes were undeniable. While the doctor was regulating my hormone dosage, I had to deal with the ups and downs. Before long, the roller coaster ride swooped into Columbus Day, meaning the kids were home from school. My children, ages 1, 6 and 8, at the time, had no idea that this day off was falling on one of my "off days". Trying to make up for lost time from work and volunteer responsibilities, the housekeeping and children had taken everything out of me by 1 pm. At some point, between the bickering, the diaper changes, the lunch mess and the telephone ringing, I escaped onto the back deck for some peace. The deck was barren in preparation for winter. The woods facing me were stripped of their leaves as was the autumn sky of the sun. A hint of chill reminded me of the cold season yet to arrive. How fitting, I thought, to be on the same cycle as mother nature. Doom and gloom. Behind my observations and thoughts, I could hear the kids screaming and fighting, and I could see through the lighted windows at the mess they were making in the family room. I knew I needed to help them find something more constructive to do, but at that moment, all I could do was cry. I hadn't the energy to deal with three kids or anything else. I instinctively fell into prayer. "Dear God, I can't function today. Please give me a sign that you're listening, that you'll help me. I can't do this alone..." Interrupting my prayer, the sounds of a very focused flock of geese roared over the house. The glorious honking grew closer and louder by the second. Before long, the entire "V" appeared so close above me, I was sure if I stood on tip toes I could touch them. They were low and loud and had just missed the tips of the trees when one of them flew out of the formation, landing in the woods. Quickly, two others followed, and the rest filled in the empty spaces and flew on, rising higher and higher until they disappeared. I was in awe of the miraculous distraction, and suddenly felt my spirit lift with the geese. Just weeks earlier, I had read that geese fly in a "V" formation -- that it takes the whole team to make it to their destination. When the "lead bird" tires out, it falls to the back of the formation and another takes over. When one falls ill or can no longer fly, it flutters to the ground. With it, two more leave the formation to sit by the sick one, protecting it while it heals or dies. Once able, the birds take flight again. Because they feel the strain of flying without the group, they often find a new group with which to fly. I remember reading that it's easier for them to get where they're going when they're traveling on the thrust of another. The geese flying out of formation feel the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone. I read, too, that geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. Then it hit me. Maybe they were honking for me. Maybe I need support right now and someone to watch over me until I can fly again. Maybe I need to fall out of formation and rest. Maybe I don't need to be so strong, so soon. Maybe I'm not ready for the long "flight". That's when things started to "look up". I knew it was time to go back inside, give my kids some attention, wait for my husband to get home from work to help, and rest. I knew all this because of a sign from above and a flock of geese reminding me that traveling on the thrust of another is easier than going it alone. -- Janice Boyles ___________________________________________ Janice is the mother of three and lives on the edge of the Catskill Mountains in New York. One particular Sunday a woman called to tell me she was sick and could not make it to church. As it so happened, that Sunday we were short on food for a mens fellowship breakfast. I was elected to go to Wal-Mart to pick up more food. While there I ran into the sick woman, I had spoken with earlier. I said, "I just spoke with you a few minutes ago and you told me you were ill, what happened? Did you have a sudden recovery?" "Yep," she said. "I was just practicing that faith you preach about all the time. I thought if I went to Wal-Mart on faith, I would have my miracle! And presto I'm all better now!" "Now that you've had your miracle," I asked, "Are you coming to church?" "Nope," she replied emphatically, "I'm going shopping." As she headed off down the isle she added over her shoulder, "If I received a miracle at Wal-Mart, who knows what else I can find in here!" by Murice D. The novice pastor finds the woman to be quite ill, gasping for breath, and obviously nearing the end of her life. In the midst of oxygen tubes, bags, and beeping medical monitors, the pastor read some Scripture and offered what spiritual comfort he could. He asked, "Would you like to have prayer before I go?" With what appeared to be her last ounce of strength, the lady whispered a yes. The pastor asked, "What would you like me to pray for today?" Without hesitation the patient responded in a raspy voice, "That I would be healed." The pastor gulped. He started thinking, "This poor lady can't accept the inevitable. This is like asking God to vaporize the calories from a dozen Krispy Kremes. She isn't facing reality." In a moment of wisdom, the young minister kept his thoughts to himself and began to intercede on her behalf, sort of. He chose a safe prayer. "Lord, we pray for your sustaining presence with this sick sister, and if it be your will, we pray she will be restored to health and service. But if it's not your will, we certainly hope she will adjust to her circumstances." Immediately after the pastor put an amen on his safe prayer, the woman opened her eyes and promptly sat up in bed. Then she threw off her covers, plopped her feet over the side, and stood up. "I think I'm healed!" she cried in a clear strong voice. Before the pastor could react, the woman walked over to the door, pulled it open, and started striding down the hospital corridor. The last thing the pastor heard before she disappeared were the words "Look at me, look at me. I'm healed," as she went by the nurses station. The pastor pressed his mouth closed, got up, and slowly walked down the stairs and out to the parking lot. There was no sign of the former patient. He opened his car door and stopped. Looking up to the heavens, the pastor said firmly, "Please, Lord, don't ever do that to me again." Have you prayed prayers like that? They're safe prayers. They give God a way out, an excuse, just in case the request is not in his will, and he doesn't come through. Finally the pianist started playing and the members all sat down in their seats. They were all looking around, wondering where the Pastor could be. You could hear people whispering, saying, "Pastor Joe is probably telling that homeless man he needs to leave the property." "What would visitors think if they seen him." All of a sudden, you could hear a gasp! The homeless man was walking down the middle of the church aisle, he made his way to the front, and then to the platform!!! When the homeless man got to the microphone. He said "Good morning, how are you all?" The homeless man was their Pastor Joe! Not a word was said, no one moved all around. Even the pianist stopped playing. Then Pastor Joe said, "Did any of you see Jesus outside this morning?" "He was cold, He was dirty, His clothes were filthy!" Mitchell Joyce Schowalter California, USA Dad was diagnosed with small-cell cancer, terminal. "Enjoy what life I have left," he said. He had three good years before his downhill slide. Then a family call said it was time to head north to see Dad as his time drew near. I booked a flight as soon as possible to meet brother Paul and sister Claudia in Sacramento. One can imagine my mood as the plane cut through the air. No smiles for anyone on this "bummer trip". I sourly walked through the Sacramento terminal, in no hurry to get anywhere -- especially the hospital. Ahead was a woman with a little girl on her shoulder looking backwards at me. Out of nowhere this girl's eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. Out of her mouth came one word: "Santa!" Now, I've got long silver white hair, a full beard and mustache, and while I'm not the fat man always depicted, I fit this little girl's vision of Santa Claus. Stopping dead in her tracks, her mother spun around. As she started to apologize for her daughter's outburst, I put my finger to my lips and said, "Sssh! I'm on vacation!" The little girl broke out into a great big smile and shook her head yes. Her mother only smiled and walked away. Her daughter gazed back with her big smile shining. Her smile changed my mood -- and my life. I put it in mind that I wouldn't show Dad anything but a smiling face. At the hospital, I found myself needing the facilities. While washing up, I thought of a way to lighten up the situation. Taking ten feet of toilet paper, I stuffed one end into my pants. I had a tail. Out the door I went -- much to Paul and Claudia's astonishment. Claudia piped up with, "Mark, do you know what you have following you?" "Yep," I said. "That I do." "Oh, jeez," said Paul. Arrows painted on walls led to the ICU. All along the way people pointed and laughed. I continued on my way like there was nothing wrong with this world. A glance over my shoulder showed Paul and Claudia following quite distantly. The ICU nurses nearly busted a gut laughing. They pointed at Dad's room, and off I went. Howls of laughter followed me. Dad was sitting up, trying to see what all the commotion was. Taking one look at me standing in the doorway, he said, "I should have known it was you!" I walked to his bedside, gave him a big hug and kiss and told him how much I loved him. Later, Dad called Mom over for a kiss. Saying, "See you in Paradise, honey," away he went. I wish I could thank that little girl. Without her help, I would have been in tears and not much good to Dad. Because of her, Christmas took on a new meaning, which I try to keep alive throughout the year. "Peace on Earth, good will to all." =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: .-.
