Walker It was a slam dunk. At least, it should have been. Everyone in the arena knew it as the tall, graceful athlete glided toward the basket. There was no one within 20 feet of him, no obstacle to prevent him from scoring as he had so many times before. The only question was: what kind of dunk would it be? A thundering, two-handed power dunk, complete with the obligatory chin-up on the rim? Or a more aesthetically pleasing one-handed dunk, perhaps with a little windmill action, or some over-the-shoulder bravado? In any case, it was going to be two points for the good guys (read: My Team) at a critical juncture of a close, competitive NBA playoff game. And that was really all that mattered. Mentally, I added two points to our score as I watched the player -- My Player -- move into position for a shot that 99 percent of NBA players would slam home 99 percent of the time. And then the unimaginable happened. He missed. Torn between dunking and simply laying the ball in the basket, My Player clanged the ball off the rim. I couldn’t believe it. Never mind that he was running at full speed during a pressure-packed game, with thousands of opposing fans screaming at him to miss. As far as I was concerned there was no excuse for missing such an easy, automatic shot. "How do you miss that shot?" I moaned to my son-in-law, who was watching the game with me. "A professional does NOT miss that shot, not in a game like this!" For the rest of the game, I was all over My Player. I groaned at every missed shot, every blown defensive assignment, and every bad pass. There’s no question that he didn’t play a perfect game. In fact, he played poorly -- especially after the missed dunk. But in my mind, every mistake was magnified by the memory of the ball clanging off the rim. By the end of the game, I was prepared to blame the three-point loss on the slam dunk that should have been. "You’re a pro," I scolded him through the television screen as he walked to the locker room, his head bowed in defeat. "A pro doesn’t make mistakes like that!" Later that evening I was doing some filing when I paused to re-read a column from several weeks earlier. I winced when I came upon a typo -- at least, I’m pretty sure it was a typo. Did someone slip the word “tje” into the English vocabulary when I wasn’t looking? I didn’t think so. So I messed up. Instead of "the" I had written "tje." But it was an understandable error. After all, the letters “h” and “j” are right next to each other on the keyboard. Anyone could slip and hit the wrong key. And as for missing the error in the editing process... well, I had been in a great hurry that week. Besides, anyone reading the column would know that I meant to write "the," not "tje." And I was sure the editors to whom I send the column -- outstanding professionals one and all -- would catch the mistake and fix it before it went into publication. I had just about rationalized the mistake into oblivion when a local sportscaster began showing highlights from the game. Sure enough, the first clip he showed was My Player missing that easy basket. My stomach started churning all over again until I glanced down at the column in my hands. My eyes went directly to "tje." And somewhere in the back of my mind I heard a familiar, scolding voice: "You’re a pro. A pro doesn’t make mistakes like that!" Especially not on "the," which should have been... you know... a slam dunk. I guess it’s true –- we don’t really have a right to expect perfection in others until we’re prepared to expect it in ourselves. And not just professionally. This also holds true on the highway, in the grocery store, at the movies and most especially in the home. Unless we can offer ourselves as a perfect example, we ought to be willing to cut each other a lot of slack. In other words, judge not... even if you dunk not. -- Joseph Walker ========================================================== >-->From Our Friend Jacinto :) ___ / _ \\ ,, /=(_)=\\// \ =(_) (O} \_____\\ .--. During their years of wandering in the desert, God demonstrated His faithfulness as well as His holiness. Now, as the people were finally ready to cross the Jordan river into the promised land of Canaan, Moses gave one last encouragement. "When the Lord your God brings you into the land He swore to your fathers - a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant - then when you eat and are satisfied, be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery." (Deuteronomy 6:10-12) We have all lived in the land of slavery - a land where we were controlled by sin. We were born as slaves, but Jesus came to set us free: "Though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free" (Romans 6:17-18). While we were still lost in our sinful condition, Jesus gave His life as a sacrifice (payment) for our sin, but He also broke the chains which kept us slaves to sin. Though we still struggle, we need not be mastered if we have placed our faith in Jesus and daily submit to the leading of His Spirit. His sacrifice provides a way to be "heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ" (Romans 8:17). This IS the victorious life! Yes we have been set free! But we did nothing to earn this freedom. We did not dig a well of righteousness or plant a field of forgiveness. Our "promised land" of freedom is a gift, given by a loving Father to those who believe. As we continue on our Christian walk, with its many peaks and valleys, twists and turns, we often forget. We become discouraged over trivial matters which are quickly fading away and forget the gift of eternal life we have been given. We wander in the dry desert of ungrateful hearts and ask, "Where is God?" We forget the joy we once had of abiding in His presence and forget His promise to always be near; "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5). Through God's precious gift, we have an eternity to worship our Heavenly Father. This alone should give us reason to praise His Name with every breath and live a life holy and pleasing to Him. Whether we are currently in a time of crushing trials or unparalleled peace, we must continually remember from where we were rescued. His gift is a blessing we can hardly comprehend! And as we draw near and give Him all of our heart, His grace continues to bless us even more. Let's worship with a thankful heart, glorify His Name in ALL we do, and be careful to never forget. (Author Unknown) A missionary spent his entire life in the mission fields of Africa telling the story of Jesus. During those days, missionary support was meager at best and nonexistent at worse. But, struggling the best he could he stayed on the field. In the latter years of his life, his wife died but he did not have the money to take her back to her home for burial, so he was forced to bury her in a makeshift grave near his home. Finally, with his health, his money, and his family gone he scraped together enough for boat passage back to NY. As the boat entered the harbor, suddenly it was surrounded by fire boats spurting spray of water and tugs blowing horns. As the boat docked, a band began playing and a crowd of people began shouting and waving their arms as a celebrity walked down the gang plank. As he watched all this from the railing, this elderly missionary, knowing he was coming home alone, began feeling sorry for himself and began to pray something like this. "Lord, I have given you all I have. I gave you my life, my family, my health. Now, at the ending of my life, why couldn't I be welcomed home with caring people who appreciate what my life has meant for the glory of God?" Then, almost as if it was an audible voice, this elderly missionary felt God speaking to him saying, "Son, you ain't Home yet!" --- ...Teehee! Thanks LouiseA! Yes, sometimes the negatives creep in and we view other people and wonder why we don't have it as good as they do or why we have all the hardships and it appears that they are living life much fuller than we do. If we let these thoughts and doubts continue, we'll let ourselves get real depressed over our current situation in life. We need to remember, though. like the story says, 'we ain't Home yet!'. Jesus told us... John 14: [2] In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. We shall live quite nicely once we are Home, in a mansion our Lord has prepared especially for us. So let them have their 'full' life now for this little time they have on this earth - we shall have an eternity with a far richer life with God and our beloved Lord Jesus Christ! Matt.5: [12] Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Col.3: [23] And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; [24] Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. [25] But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons. On his death bed, Alexander summoned his army generals and told them his three ultimate wishes: 1. The best doctors should carry his coffin ... 2. The wealth he has accumulated (money, gold, precious stones) should be scattered along the procession to the cemetery ... 3. His hands should be let loose, so they hang outside the coffin for all to see! One of his generals who was surprised by these unusual requests asked Alexander to explain. Here is what Alexander the Great had to say : 1. "I want the best doctors to carry my coffin to demonstrate that in the face of death, even the best doctors in the world have no power to heal." 2. "I want the road to be covered with my treasure so that everybody sees that material wealth acquired on earth, will stay on earth." 3. I want my hands to swing in the wind, so that people understand that we come to this world empty handed and we leave this world empty handed after the most precious treasure of all is exhausted, and that is : TIME. We do not take to our grave any material wealth. TIME is our most precious treasure because it is LIMITED. We can produce more wealth, but we cannot produce more time. When we give someone our time, we actually give a portion of our life that we will never take back. Our time is our life! The best present that you can give to your family and friends is your TIME. I do think however that the best present you can give to your family and friends is sharing the Gospel with them so they too may have eternal Life and be listed in the Book of Life. After that, Time is the best present. Helping to secure their future because of how much you love and care for them just has to be your top priority and the ultimate best present ever! Mazzella When I was a boy I used to love to go bike riding. There was a Summer 4-H camp full of paved roadways across the road from my home. During the Spring and Fall this camp was mainly empty and the roadways were clear for me and my bike. I would ride my old, banana-seat, foot-brake bicycle for hours. The camp grounds had a lot of steep hills that were tough to get up. Often I would have to climb off and push my bike up them. The downhill rides, however, made it all worthwhile. I felt like I was flying, and I barely had to pedal at all. It was pure fun, pure delight, pure joy, and pure happiness. I laughed all the way with the wind in my face, my heart in my throat, and my soul in Heaven. Choosing love, joy, and oneness with God each day often reminds me of those childhood bike rides. It can take a bit of work to get going at first. You can even feel like you are pushing your bike up a steep hill full of problems, work, and worldly concerns. Once you get going, however, you find that the ride becomes easier and easier. Soon you feel like you are flying along without even having to pedal at all. Soon you feel wind blowing in your face, joy filling up your heart, and love radiating from your soul. You find yourself laughing more, smiling more, and singing more. You find yourself sharing more, giving more, and helping more. You find yourself loving others, spreading joy, and living the way that God meant for you to live. You find yourself realizing that God is love, that life is joy, and that we are all God’s children. If you choose then each day of your life can become a fantastic ride of love and joy that takes you a little further along the road to Heaven. The longer you ride too the less steep the hills will become. The longer you ride the faster and smoother you will go. The longer you ride the more you will feel God pedaling right along beside you and smiling all the way. Enjoy the ride. -<>- _____ _..--'''@ @'''--.._ .' @_/-//-\/>/>'/ @ '. Now I remember my mother telling about November 11, 1918 She said the people stood in the streets and sounded any thing that would blow, fired guns. Beat on pots and pans...any thing that would make a racket was brought out. That was the war to end all wars. People were glad it was over. School was forgot about for the day. That was the city of Thayer, Missouri. We lived in Lexington, Missouri When the last big one came to a end. No school to turn out. It was August. I do not remember any one doing any thing in the way of making a racket. No fire works, no noise of any kind. I think people just went home and gave thinks to God it is at last over, each in their own way. I remember what we did. Dad got a watermelon and we went home and feasted on it. I don't recall any thing else. I guess we had supper later. As I recall the news came in about 2 PM. Now the history books say it was later. But ever store in town closed up by 3 PM. Wentworth Military School was about 2 blocks from where we lived. And the band was out playing that wonderful March...Stars and Strips Forever, over and over.. That was Lexington. Well, think it's time to get a watermelon..I try to have watermelon on August 14th... And Remember. To me, this date was the end of that war. The date in the history books says 2 Sept 1945, which I guess is the true date. That would be the date the papers was signed on the Battleship. USS Missouri. Some are in better and some worse shape than me...but, I see the great change...Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd become. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will... I just fall asleep where I sit! And so...now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!! But, at least I know, that though I'm on the back nine, and I'm not sure how long it will last...this I know, that when it's over on this earth...it's over. A new adventure will begin! Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done...things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime. So, if you're not on the back nine yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long!! Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether you're on the back nine or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!! "Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one. LIVE IT WELL! ENJOY TODAY! DO SOMETHING FUN! BE HAPPY ! Knowing that feigning car trouble is a favorite criminal decoy to get well-meaning motorists to stop to try to help, I zipped on by and took the next exit to head for home. Then I remembered a fleeting image of the vehicle's drive shaft hanging under the car. I doubled back on surface streets to the previous freeway entrance, entered the freeway, and pulled up behind the disabled car. The driver looked to be in his 70s, so I relaxed a bit as he told me his predicament. He was headed north on his way home to his organic peach ranch in the San Joaquin Valley. The freeway call box he had stopped next to did not work, so he walked down the embankment separating the two roadways at a major freeway interchange, and crossed the freeway to use a call box on the far side. He was returning when I had passed by. He had little money to pay for a tow truck, so I towed him off the freeway and up to a service station. The station was closing, but the operator said he'd stay open long enough to try to help him out. I wished him luck and went home. My wife and I went out to dinner shortly afterwards and drove by the service station. It was dark inside, and the car was still up on the service rack. On our way home, we spotted the gentleman I had helped crossing the street nearby. He told us that the service station could repair the driveshaft, but had to wait until Saturday morning to get the parts, and he had checked in at the only motel in our entire valley just across the street from the service station. We invited the gentleman to come to our home for a couple of hours of camaraderie and some snacks. The conversation was great. A couple of hours later, we returned him to his motel. His car was repaired on Saturday morning, and he continued his journey. That experience turned into a long-lasting friendship. He was extremely grateful for the help on the freeway. In this day of highway dangers, we often reflect on this experience and continue to enjoy the lasting relationships he brought us, even though the "Peach Farmer" passed away in 2005, at 88. My wife and I are still very good friends with the "Peach Farmer's" son and daughter, and their families. We even visited and stayed in the house he had helped his father build back in about 1912. Sitting on concrete blocks for a foundation, it had nary a level floor in the whole house, but was filled with warmth and sharing. His heart was pure gold, and his son and daughter carry his ethic forward. by Jim Lumsden --- ...Aww, such a good one! Miller California, USA I live in California, and do a lot of driving on the San Francisco Bay Area freeways. Often I see different local police cars, or those of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) zooming past. Sometimes they're parked by the side of the road where they may have pulled over a motorist; sometimes they're assisting at an accident scene. When I see this, I try to remind myself that the police are meant to be there to help people, to enforce the laws, and to try to keep the public safe. Perhaps because I'm white, middle class, and drive a decent-looking car, I rarely have been subjected to a traffic stop. Yet I often do feel fear in the pit of my stomach when I see the flashing lights of a police car in my rear view mirror. In August of 2011 I was heading home from a visit to my mom, who lives in Sacramento. Driving south down Highway 880 I noticed flashing lights in my rear view mirror. A CHP car was coming up fast on the right, lights and sirens going. I slowed down just in case, as did all the cars around me, to around 50 mph. The CHP officer drove up to just ahead of the pack of cars I was in. Then he did the most extraordinary thing. From the right lane of the freeway he began to zigzag back and forth across all four lanes, at around 60 mph to start with, lights flashing. He repeated this maneuver around 10 times, slowing down slightly with each crossing of the four or five lanes of freeway. This effectively slowed the entire pack of cars, until we were all moving at 20 mph or less. He maintained about a 50-yard lead on the pack, and everyone around me carefully kept that distance. Every car in the pack following him stopped when he pulled up in the number two lane, got out of the car, grabbed a big piece of shredded retread from a semi-truck's tire, and threw it safely onto the edge of the freeway. He got back in his car, door still open, and drove over to the next piece of retread, in the #3 lane, which was small enough that he bent over, picked it up while still seated, and threw it into the driver's side of his car. He repeated doing this, moving from piece to piece, until the hazard was completely cleared. We continued to follow him, very slowly. This entire incident took ten minutes. In today's world, it's hard to keep faith that we're here to take care of each other, and so easy to let cynicism take root. To the CHP officer: Thank you for plunging in to do what had to be done to keep our highways and drivers safer. Thank you for my moment of renewed faith in humanity. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Our Friend Geniann :) _ _.-'`-._ _ ;.'________'.; _________n.[____________].n_________ |""_""_""_""||==||==||==||""_""_""_""] |"""""""""""||..||..||..||"""""""""""| |LI LI LI LI||LI||LI||LI||LI LI LI LI| |.. .. .. ..||..||..||..||.. .. .. ..| |LI LI LI LI||LI||LI||LI||LI LI LI LI| ,,;;,;;;,;;;,;;;,;;;,;;;,;;;,;;,;;;,;;;,;;,, ;;jgs;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; [Thought Provoking Political Commentary] August 11, 2015 Istanbul, Turkey When I was a kid, I ‘accidentally’ lit my parent’s living room carpet on fire. A friend of theirs had been over the night before and left his cigarette lighter on the coffee table. And as I had never seen such magical technology before as instant fire at the push of a button, I started playing with it right away. It only took a few minutes before I began burning the perforated edges of my dad’s dot matrix printer paper, all of which fell right out of my hands towards the carpet like how streaks of flaming meteorites fall to the earth from outer space. Looking back it wasn’t really an accident. The truth is that I was an idiot. I shouldn’t have been playing with fire (literally). It certainly wasn’t the first, and would not be the last mistake that I ever made. We’re human. It happens. And we have to forgive ourselves when we screw up. But when governments screw up, it tastes especially bitter. This morning we all found out that the US Environmental Protection Agency caused a massive spill of more than 10 MILLION liters of toxic chemicals into the Animas River in Colorado. Oops. At first the EPA admitted to about 3 million liters. But now another government agency with better data is saying, in fact, that it’s over 10 million liters. The river flows into New Mexico and Arizona where it eventually joins Lake Powell, a major source of drinking water for Las Vegas, San Diego, and Los Angeles. One can hardly call this an accident. Just like when police ‘accidently’ shoot unarmed black men on a regular basis. Or when the Defense Department ‘accidentally’ drone strikes a children’s hospital. Or when the Treasury Department ‘accidentally’ fails to safeguard incredibly sensitive financial and personal information on over 100,000 taxpayers. Or when Healthcare.gov ‘accidentally’ enrolled thousands of people into the government’s registry of sex offenders. Or when the Census Bureau ‘accidentally’ funded a $2.6 million study on prostitutes in China. The list goes on and on. Hey look, we all make mistakes. But this is serial incompetence. It’s not about individuals screwing up their jobs, but rather an entire system designed to fail. The Federal Reserve was founded 100 years ago to prevent banking panics, stabilize prices, and create stability in the financial system. Yet ever since the Fed took over control the US economy, there has been an almost uninterrupted pattern of bubbles, busts, crises, and recessions. The Department of Energy was created on August 4, 1977 to drastically reduce America’s reliance on foreign oil, which at the time was about 55% of US consumption. Yet after four decades and tens of billions of dollars spent annually, the US still relies on foreign sources for about 55% of its total oil needs-- all according to data at the very department that’s supposed to reduce it. The US Department of Education has spent billions since 1979 trying to improve education in America. Yet their own numbers show that reading scores have remained flat, and that nearly 2 out of 3 children in 8th grade still lack proficiency in both reading and math. This is total insanity. Literally. My dictionary defines ‘insanity’ as extreme foolishness characterized by irrationality. Of course my preferred definition of insanity is the old favorite about trying the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result. This is how government works. Whenever there are problems created by government, they simply create more government. [and throw money at the problem without researching how best to fix it first] We know deep down this system doesn’t work. We know that government bureaucracy is a joke (generally the butt of many jokes, which are funny because they’re true...) And yet we allow ourselves to be deluded every four years by election hype. We allow ourselves to believe that the problems will go away, that THIS time will be different, if we just get the right person in office. People thought the same thing back in 2008 with Barack Obama. And George W. Bush back in 2000. The excitement for the 2016 election is already palpable. People are fed up. But they believe that one of these candidates has the secret key to fix everything in this giant ‘accident’ we call government. Unfortunately this is delusional thinking. And yes, insanity. I’m sure most of them are very nice people, and perhaps well-intended. But the problem is the system itself: awarding the power to regulate nearly every aspect of our lives to a bankrupt, centralized authority which churns out over 80,000 pages per year of new rules and laws. It’s time to stop investing in this process and start investing in yourself. Because these people aren’t going to fix anything. When your government has to spend more money on mandatory entitlement programs and interest on the debt than it collects in tax revenue, you might as well elect a banana to be the President of the United States. Nothing is going to happen by changing the players. You have to change the game. And sometimes that means walking away from the table. Until tomorrow, Simon Black Founder, SovereignMan.com --- ...Insightful. Thanks Genainn! We need to get back to basics.
