Tall and blonde -- that was the description we had received from Jana in an email she had sent from Prague only days before. It's amazing how many tall, blonde women were on that plane. I held a sign saying "JANA VOJTOVA" and, finally, one of the passengers filing through the doorway recognized the name. The fatigue that masked her pretty face lifted when she made her way through the crowd to us, hand outstretched in greeting and perhaps relief. "Those international students are so different," a friend had said earlier that week. But the only difference I noticed in this young woman standing before us was her stylish European clothes. On the long journey from Prague in the Czech Republic, Jana passed through airports in Frankfurt, Germany, and Chicago, before arriving in Kansas City. She traveled this great distance to find strangers waiting for her. We would transport her two hours west to begin a semester of study at Kansas State University, another unknown. She will claim us as her "family" while she is in America. She will live in a dorm but spend some time in our home, call on us when she has questions or feels lonely. We'd met another Czech student on an earlier flight. Now, Eliska greeted Jana warmly, speaking sometimes in English, sometimes in Czech. Each girl lived in America once before. Eliska had been a high school exchange student a few years earlier, and Jana spent eight months in New Jersey working as a nanny. Jana's luggage had not arrived with her, much to her dismay. After making arrangements to have it delivered to us the next day, we took the girls to The Cracker Barrel Restaurant for dinner. Young and healthy appetites did justice to the meals they ordered, and they both chattered gaily throughout the meal. They had so many questions about the university and the town where it was located. Happily, we had the answers. We assured them they would come to know and love purple -- the Kansas State University color. The lengthy trip in the car afforded time to get to know one another, learn about families, what the girls would be studying and more. Jana and Eliska spent the night in our home, and the next morning, after breakfast, I drove them to the campus where they were to attend a meeting for International Students. As we approached the appointed campus building, we noticed dozens of large flags lining a sidewalk at the International Student Union. Flags of all the countries that had sent students were represented. Both girls were excited to see the flags and quickly spied the one from the Czech Republic. Their eagerness was suddenly replaced by silence as they spotted the dozens and dozens of students milling around the doorway of Weber Hall. Together they chorused, "I'm so scared!" After a few words of encouragement from me, they set out to begin their new adventure as International students. As I drove home, I thought about how much they were like my own American daughter and son. Raised in a completely different culture on another continent did not seem to make a difference. Until you heard their accented English, you would never know they were not born and raised right here in America. I smiled as I remembered Jana making a phone call to her mother as soon as she arrived at our home the previous night. Czech mothers want to know their child arrived safely as American mothers would in a reverse situation. They have the same hopes and fears for their children as we do. And the girls? They had those first day of school jitters like any American girl. We're not so different, after all. -- Nancy Kopp ___________________________________________ Nancy says, "Our world today is so much smaller, but, even so, we shy away from those of other cultures at times. We have worked with International Students and have learned that we are not so different at all. Truly, people are much alike all over the world in many respects. When they saw their church, it was very run down and needed much work. They set a goal to have everything done in time to have their first service on Christmas Eve. They worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls, painting, etc, and on December 18 were ahead of schedule and just about finished. On December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving rainstorm - hit the area and lasted for two days. On the 21st, the pastor went over to the church. His heart sank when he saw that the roof had leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, beginning about head high. The pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor, and not knowing what else to do but postpone the Christmas Eve service, headed home. On the way he noticed that a local business was having a flea market type sale for charity, so he stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross embroidered right in the center. It was just the right size to cover the hole in the front wall. He bought it and headed back to the church. By this time it had started to snow. An older woman running from the opposite direction was trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor invited her to wait in the warm church for the next bus 45 minutes later. She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor could hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. Then he noticed the woman walking down the center aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor," she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check the lower right corner to see if the initials 'EBG' were crocheted into it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . The woman could hardly believe it as the pastor told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The woman explained that before the war she and her husband were well-to-do people in Austria When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave. Her husband was going to follow her the next week. He was captured, sent to prison and she never saw her husband or her home again. The pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth; but she made the pastor keep it for the church. The pastor insisted on driving her home. That was the least he could do. She lived on the other side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn for the day for a housecleaning job. What a wonderful service they had on Christmas Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the spirit were great. At the end of the service, the pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door and many said that they would return. One older man, whom the pastor recognized from the neighborhood, continued to sit in one of the pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he wasn't leaving. The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on the front wall because it was identical to one that his wife had made years ago when they lived in Austria before the war and how could there be two tablecloths so much alike? He told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home again in all the 35 years between. The pastor asked him if he would allow him to take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten Island and to the same house where the pastor had taken the woman three days earlier. He helped the man climb the three flights of stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on the door and he saw the greatest Christmas reunion he could ever imagine. T rue story - submitted by Pastor Rob Reid who says God does work in mysterious ways. I asked the Lord to bless you as I prayed for you today, to guide you and protect you as you go along your way. His love is always with you. His promises are true, and when we give Him all our cares we know He will see us through. So when the road you're traveling seems difficult at best, just remember I'm here praying and God will do the rest. Pass this on to those you want God to bless and remember to send it back to the one who asked God to bless you first. When there is nothing left but God, that is when you find out that God is all you need. Take 60 seconds and give this a shot! All you do is simply say the following small prayer for the person who sent this to you. Father, God, bless all my friends and family in what ever it is that You know they may be needing this day! May their lives be full of Your peace, prosperity and power as they seek to have a closer relationship with You. In Jesus Christ's name, Amen. Then send it on to five other people, including the one who sent it to you. Within hours five people have prayed for you and you caused a multitude of people to pray for other people. Then, sit back and watch the power of God work in your life. P. S. Five is good, but more is better. --- ...Sweet heartwarmer! Here comes another scam. This scam is very clever. Be very careful out there! One could easily fall for this - beware of people bearing gifts! There is a new and clever credit card scam. Please circulate this. Someone it happened to says it works like this: Wednesday a week ago, I had a phone call from someone who said that he was from some outfit called: "Express Couriers" asking if I was going to be home because there was a package for me, and the caller said that the delivery would arrive at my home in roughly an hour. And sure enough, about an hour later, a uniformed delivery man turned up with a beautiful basket of flowers and wine. I was very surprised since it did not involve any special occasion or holiday, and I certainly didn't expect anything like it. Intrigued about who would send me such a gift, I inquired as to who the sender is. The delivery man's reply was, he was only delivering the gift package, but allegedly a card was being sent separately; (the card has never arrived!). There was also a consignment note with the gift. He then went on to explain that because the gift contained alcohol, there was a $3.50 "delivery charge" as proof that he had actually delivered the package to an adult, and not just left it on the doorstep where it could be stolen or taken by anyone. This sounded logical and I offered to pay him cash. He then said that the company required the payment to be by credit or debit card only so that everything is properly accounted for. My husband, who by this time was standing beside me, pulled his wallet out of his pocket with the credit/debit card, and 'John', the "delivery man", asked my husband to swipe the card on the small mobile card machine which had a small screen and keypad where Frank was also asked to enter the card's PIN and security number. A receipt was printed out and given to us. To our horrible surprise, between Thursday and the following Monday, $4,000 had been charged/withdrawn from our credit/debit account at various ATM machines. It appeared that somehow the "mobile credit card machine" which the delivery man carried now had all the info necessary to create a "dummy" card with all our card details after my husband swiped our card and entered the requested PIN and security number. Upon finding out about the illegal transactions on our card, we immediately notified the bank which issued us the card, and our credit/debit account was closed. We also personally went to the Police, where it was confirmed that it is definitely a scam because several households had been similarly hit. WARNING: Be wary of accepting any "surprise gift or package", which you neither expected nor personally ordered, especially if it involves any kind of payment as a condition of receiving the gift or package. Also, never accept anything if you do not personally know or there is no proper identification of who the sender is. Above all, the only time you should give out any personal credit/debit card information is when you yourself initiated the purchase or transaction! If you pass this on, it may just prevent someone else from being swindled! --- ...Thanks for the heads up PatDeE! =============================================================== >-->From Archives InspiredBuffalo: .---. .---. ,';' `.';' `.. f :Bo. ` d88: `\ /d88P' `\ ; /d888P' `. The lights go off, and my imagination switches on. Pictures flash through my mind like an old film from the fifties. I remember driving home by myself for the first time. Now, I look into the future and imagine that I am walking across the stage to receive my college diploma. The years pass, and I hear my fianc é say "I do." I look further and listen to the gentle gurgles coming from my baby's nursery. A smile discreetly appears as memories past and thoughts of the future travel through my soul. I journey to memories of my high school graduation, and a tear suddenly trickles down my cheek. I look into the bleachers packed with families and friends. I see my parents wrapped in pride, and I look to their side for Katie and Kevin's approval. But Katie, my older sister, is not there. My eyes abruptly open as I am snapped back into reality. I remember being called out of Spanish class in tenth grade and taken to the hospital to see Katie, who had cancer, for the final time. It was an excruciating task, but I found the good in Katie's tragic death. Katie's room is exactly the way she left it on a Friday night in September, 1993, when she was carried to the ambulance on a stretcher. Her James Dean poster hangs on one wall; her elementary school track ribbons and collection of porcelain masks hangs on the others. Her bed is neatly made and lined with stuffed animals -- typical of a girl who would visit her sloppier friends and, without prompting, start vacuuming their rooms. Katie died just a few weeks into her freshman year at the University of Miami. At eighteen she was 5'5'' tall and had straight shoulder length blond hair, big blue eyes, and pale clear skin. Her senior year in high school, Katie was the varsity cheerleader captain and valedictorian. More importantly, though, she was my best friend. After all, when she was six years old, she had declared herself old enough to take care of her little sister and brand new baby brother, because she thought our mother was not sharing us enough with her. This caring attitude continued throughout her life. Katie would always braid my hair, go shopping with me, and let me go out with her and her friends when I was lonely and bored. Katie would always tutor Kevin, who has a learning disability, when he needed help with his homework. She would continually drill him on his studies until he got it right. Afterwards, she would take him to go get ice cream as a reward. Clearly, Katie was not just our older sister. She was also our teacher, friend, and second mother. Katie always surrounded herself with friends. She was constantly opening her ears, heart, and arms to someone in need. The phone was constantly ringing and her room was always crowded with people in it. Now, my house is silent. I realize that getting caught in a pool of depression only leads to drowning. I live by looking for the positive in the worst situations. I now have a relationship with my parents and brother that means everything to me. I know what is important in life, and it is not always partying and getting A's. But most of all, I know that I can handle anything. Life is not easy, but I overcame one of its toughest obstacles. I believe, the hardest part of death is the experiences it steals. Katie will not be clapping for me when I finally get my college diploma or giving me advice on my wedding day. My children will only hear stories of the girlhood of their aunt, both stories of reality and an imagined future. I close my eyes as tight as they can go. A diploma is placed in my hand. "I do" echoes from a distance. Katie says she loves me and hugs me tight on a September afternoon in 1993. Just before I cross my high school auditorium stage, I look out at the spectators in the bleachers, and I see mother and father and Kevin. Katie is sitting right beside them, cheering me on. -<>- ________ .##@@&&&@@##. ,##@&::%&&%%::&@##. #@&:%%000000000%%:&@# #@&:%00' '00%:&@# #@&:%0' '0%:&@# #@&:%0 0%:&@# #@&:%0 0%:&@# #@&:%0 0%:&@# "" ' " " ' "" >My Brother, My Stranger Two different worlds, yet bonded by one man by the warm touch of our father's hand I kept him with me, in my life knowing you needed him through all your struggles and strife now all I can do is dwell on years I let go by I realize brother you have left me; it is time for you to fly but why, you were so young why didn't I get to know you, the years were so short yet so long I recall as a child looking into your eyes and you into mine and somehow feeling safe as you whispered "baby everything will be fine." Because of my years of service with the organization, and because I'd held another position that wasn't being eliminated, I had "bumping rights." I looked at all my options, including the job market, and all my responsibilities, including my son, then made the difficult decision to stay employed. This meant I would bump another person out of their job. Although I could narrow the list down to people who held my former position, I had no way of knowing whether they could also "bump" or if they would end up in the unemployment line. My son and I adjusted for my new income by moving in with my mother. As mental preparation, I assumed that the person whose job I would take was a hard worker, well respected and loved by co-workers. I had no idea how true those assumptions would prove. Evie, the person I bumped, is one of those people who mothers everybody and whose love is returned -- along with admiration and respect for the work she does. Evie showed her style in the way she counseled those around her to accept and assist me. She felt the changes meant that she was needed somewhere else. However, one employee was affected more than the others were. Nancy was not only Evie's partner at work; she and Evie are best friends. Nancy's personal struggle was made all the more difficult because she would be responsible to train me. And we would have to work closely even once I got a handle on the job. Nancy and I met at a kickoff event for the new school year. She sat directly across from me. We didn't speak much, but kept an eye on each other. I think the ice started to melt when she (approvingly) caught my reaction to one of the events that day. Things continued to improve over the next few weeks as we got to know one another better and talked about our thoughts and feelings. Nancy must have done a lot of thinking and praying, because over time it became clear that she had appointed herself to be my protector. Once the school year began and we were meeting with teaching staff, students and employers, Nancy made sure we presented a united front. When people seemed upset about losing Evie, Nancy told them that Evie was doing well and was obviously needed at her new job. Evie could have resented my part in forcing her to change jobs, but she accepted the shift with dignity and grace. And Nancy could have remained hurt and angry, and treated me accordingly, but instead put her feelings aside to help me. Now Nancy is not only my partner, she is my friend. I'm so lucky, because each woman's reaction was an authentic testament to her character. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: ,-. ,--' ~.). ,' `. ; (((__ __))) ; ( (#) ( (#) | \_/___\_/| ," ,-' `__". . (and one thing to never forget) Your presence is a present to the world. You're unique and one of a kind. Your life can be what you want it to be. Take the days just one at a time. Count your blessings not your troubles. You'll make it through whatever comes along. Within you are so many answers. Understand, have courage, be strong. Don't put limits on yourself. So many dreams are waiting to be realized. Decisions are too important to leave to chance. Reach for your peak, your goal, your prize. Nothing wastes more energy then worrying. The longer one carries a problem, the heavier it gets. Don't take things too seriously. Live a life of serenity, not a life of regrets. Remember that a little love goes along way. Remember that a lot... goes forever. Remember that a friendship is a wise investment. Life's treasures are people... together. Realize that it's never too late. Do ordinary things in an extraordinary way. Have health and hope and happiness. Take the time to wish upon a star. And don't ever forget... for even a day... how very special you are.
