Mieszek "Hey guys, wanna go to the beach tomorrow?" Before the words had faded from the air, my 8 and 6 year olds returned with their boogie boards and swim suits. Next came the cooler and a bag of snacks. The two year old toddled out, dragging beach towels and heading for the door. The next day we'd spend a few hours riding the waves and looking for unique sea shells to stuff into the beach bag. There's never really a bad day at the beach in Florida. Now, when I was a kid in Jersey, there were bad days at the beach, or at least on the way to it. First, it's not the beach, it's the shore, which is pronounced like you meant to say "sure", but it got stuck somewhere around in your gums before dribbling out. It's called the shore because that's where my grandmother made me stay. "No further than your knees, kids," which was fine with me since my lips were trembling from cold, even in July or August. What a sight I was splashing in the knee-high water with a flower covered bathing cap, a shoestring tied across my back to keep my bathing suit straps from falling off my shoulders, and blue lips. Five minutes in the water was plenty of time for any of us and we, my sister, aunt (who was my mom's younger sister and the same age as my own sister), and cousins, became expert sand castle builders on the shores the likes of Atlantic City (before casinos), Sea Side Heights, and Cape May. What a sight our merry band made those summers with my grandmother. Anyone watching had to get a chuckle watching her trying to deal with all of us in the sand and buying ice cream cones on the boardwalk. They would have truly had a belly laugh though, had they seen us in transport to and from our weekly fun filled day. We'd all pile in with her, squirming worms burrowing into the back cabin. We couldn't wait to get there and, for the first few minutes, asked every ten seconds if we were there yet. Nan always drove old station wagons with windows down and air conditioning that didn't work right. We'd be lined up in the far back, facing each other, knees laced together. Grandma was a heavy smoker, and her habit came along in the car. On the dash of every vehicle she drove there always sat a bean bag bottom ashtray. Next to it, stuck on with duct tape, was a small dog with a spring for a neck. Even before the the key was in the ignition, Nan had lit up and set her cigarette in that ashtray. As the engine chugged to life, the head of the dog started to bounce around. The back window was always down, and fumes from the exhaust immediately came into our tiny cabin. The faster we went the less we smelled it, but it returned each time we came to a stop. And there we sat, knees smacking each other as the car chugged forward, smoke wafting back from the cigarettes, and dog head bobbing. Puff, puff, bob around with each bump, come to a stop and smack go the knees against each other. Up come the fumes from the back window. Lurch forward, smack knees, bob, bob, drag on the cigarette. The squirming stopped, and our heads began to bob around as well. Please, Nan, are we there yet? We were too sick to ask, and she was too busy singing with Elvis to notice if we had. Sometimes I think she took the long way home just to have a little peace. I don't smoke, but when I come to a stop in my airconditioned van, I sometimes think of my Nan and the shore, and I bob my head around and laugh at myself. Hey kids, don't forget to pack the water proof sunscreen. Tomorrow I plan to go in the water above my knees. -- Kelly A. Mieszek ___________________________________________ Kelly enjoys actually going in the water at the beach in Jacksonville, Florida. She does not drive a station wagon, smoke, or have a bobbing dog head in her van. All of this makes her kids happy, coming and going. ========================================================== >-->From Our Friend Jacinto :) . | . \ | / `. \ ' / .' `. .-*""*-. .' She showed me the smooth, shiny rocks which had been thrown around in her rock polishing machine. They were rough when they first went into the machine - but the finished product was smooth rocks with interesting designs and colors. Only an experienced eye can see the potential of those rocks before they are polished. Then she showed me some other, larger rocks which were dirty and very rough on the outside. But when they were split by a hammer, many of them contained the most beautiful crystal formations. They had to be cleaned and treated to loosen the dirt which had gathered in the crevices. The removal of this silt and dirt allowed the beauty of the crystals to shine forth. To find rocks which can be polished or contain crystals and precious gems one has to have experience and patience to spend hours and days looking for them, identifying them and then cleaning and polishing them. In a way, we can compare a rock hound to our Creator, Jesus Christ. He knows exactly what is inside of us. He knows and sees the potential in us. In Max Lacado's book, "Just Like Jesus", he makes the statement, "Jesus loves you just the way you are, but loves you too much to leave you that way." Jesus is patient with us and will keep "polishing" us until we shine like stars. --Katherine Kehler --- ...Thanks Bunni! Wouldn't that be nice? I see Christians teach about this all the time and I think it would be so nice if all I had to do was become a Christian and God through Jesus Christ would bring out the best in me - 'polish' me like this talks about so I shine like a precious gem or a star. Cool huh? But what does the Word of God say? , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' Lets look at Colossians 3 [8] But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. [9] Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; [10] And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Doesn't sound to automatic to me - seems it is up to me to put off the old man and put on the new man. And our direction doesn't end there for we are told what the old man things are to put off and what the new man things we are to put on are... [12] Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; [13] Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. [14] And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. [15] And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Boy, that sure is a lot to do as a Christian, but God doesn't end there. Oh no! We are instructed to continue renewing our minds... [16] Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. [17] And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. Oh boy here we go - even more renewing... [18] Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. [19] Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. Wives are supposed to let their man be the head of the household by praying to God that he is given the best wisdom. You can talk out a plan or decision, but the final say is to go to the husband. That is the 'submit yourself' instruction here. Husbands are to love their wives like Christ loves the church as they are at the head of the household like Christ is the head of the church. All this is not automatic. Jesus doesn't polish us and make us into bright stars. The bible says we have to do it. Of course, anything we want or need or have to do in this life can be made easier by asking God to help us but the bottom line is it us who must put on the new man. It takes work for us to do all these things. And God doesn't stop there. He goes on teaching us how to renew our minds and put on the new man... [20] Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. [21] Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. [22] Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: [23] And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Why do all this? Here is the answer.... [24] Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. This explains why we have so many people who say they are Christians but their life doesn't reflect their Christian heritage. They are not living good lives. It is our choice to become like Christ and put on the new man. AND God says if we do this, we will receive the reward of the inheritance. Here are more verses instructing us how to renew our minds... Rom.12: [2] And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Eph.4 [22] That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; [23] And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; [24] And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. [25] Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. [26] Be[if] ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: [27] Neither give place to the devil. [28] Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. [29] Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. [30] And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. [31] Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: [32] And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. Some times change is good. I remember a fellow a number of years ago. He sang and played a string music box on the local T.V. station in Lincoln. I never cared much for him, nor his singing and playing that thing. I heard others say the same thing. He was on what they called the morning show. I have no idea what else he may have done to make a living. As far as I could figure. The T.V. station was sure hard up for a filler on that show. Well all at once he was no longer on the show. They found some one else to fill the spot. He was gone, they must have wised up. Maybe told him to learn how to play and sing if that was what he was going to do for his life's work. Oh what his name was, sure beats me. I also don't remember the first time I seen this fellow on country music stuff. He dressed the part of a hobo. Hat and all. Looked like he hadn't seen a shave in some time. He wasn't bad. Kind of liked him. Well some time passed and one night he is on some talk show about country type stuff. I liked the guy so I glued my self to the tube. He was telling about his past. Well this fellow that runs the show and pumps the guest . Said "Box just how and when did you come up with this." Box said, "well one day I was on my way home from the morning show. I was setting at a railroad crossing watching a train go by. When all at once I seen a fellow setting in a box car. I said there goes Box Car Willie." Now you know the rest of the story. Box Car Willie died while back. A rich man. My friend sent this to me and encouraged me to post it and spread the word. I agree. If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks. Seriously.. Please read: STROKE IDENTIFICATION: During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food - while she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00pm, Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this... A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough. RECOGNIZING A STROKE Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps, STR . Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S * Ask the individual to SMILE. T * Ask the person to TALK to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. . . It is sunny out today) R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately !! and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved. -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment: The Sleep Metaphor http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/BibleStudy/sleepmetaphor.html Straying From The Light http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/BibleStudy/straying.html Attitude Is Everything 3 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/attitude3.html Pay It Forward http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/payitforward.html Proud Of Our Troops 3 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/troops3.html In The Pink http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/inthepink.html Wisdom For Life http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/wisdomforlife.html Iceland's Volcano http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/volcano.html Lighthouses of the World http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/lighthouses.html LEGO Church http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/legochurch.html A Little Froggy http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/frogart.html -<>- >From TruthOrTradition: Hades, Sheol, and the State of the Dead http://tinyurl.com/ndysank -<>- >From BeforeItsNews: [WARNING] New World Dollar Coming October 20, 2015 http://tinyurl.com/pr2n9og -<>- >From Our Friend Melody :) Radio Host Delilah: Choosing to Forgive http://www.cbn.com/tv/1907175377001 PodOmatic | Best Free Podcasts http://minicasts.podomatic.com/play/976457/7242023 When His Time Grew Near, He Wanted To Perform 1 Last Hymn. http://tinyurl.com/nguxqfj The Dancing Traffic Light, A ‘Don’t Walk’ Light http://tinyurl.com/o2mo7du --- ...HaHa! I never knew about lightships though, until I visited Nantucket, that charming old island that's about 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod. In the harbor there, you can tour the now retired Lightship Nantucket. But before the development of modern navigational technology, the work of that ship actually saved many lives. There are deadly shoals that extend south of Nantucket, and the main shipping lanes to New York City run right along the outer edge in what's called the Ambrose Channel. Now, for many decades, the Lightship Nantucket was stationed at the eastern approach to the channel - at what was called the "Times Square of the Atlantic." Well, she dared not leave her position there - because all ship navigation was fixed on that lightship. If the lightship moved, every ship would follow her - possibly to disaster. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Danger of a Drifting Light." Now, to put you and me in this picture, and believe me we're in it, we have to go to our word for today from the Word of God. In Matthew 5:16-18 , Jesus tells us: "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." Now, you don't have to be a great theologian to get this message. If you belong to Jesus, you are a light for the people around you. Maybe it's really dark where you're the light. Well, that's okay. The darker the darkness gets, the more the light shows up. And it only takes a little light to make a big difference in a dark room. Now, here's the problem: if the light starts drifting, all the people who are watching your light will drift with you - possibly to disaster. See, whether or not you realize it, there are people watching your light. Oh, maybe it's your child, your coworkers, a Christian brother or sister. It might be some family members, folks you minister with. And for any person in your world who does not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, you are the lighthouse or the lightship that may be their only hope of finding their way to heaven. If the light fails, if the light drifts, they will sail right into an eternity you don't even want to think about. For the sake of the people who are watching your light, you can't afford to drift into negativity, or criticism, or cynicism, or some rebellious attitude. They'll follow you there. If you drift into selfishness, or carelessness about what you look at or listen to. If you drift into gossip, discouragement, compromise, it won't be just you going there. You're affecting other people's course every day. Don't lead them toward the rocks. You've got to hold your position. You're the light! Maybe you've been covering up your light where you are. You never tell anyone there what you know about Jesus Christ. Or maybe you've turned off your light by doing things that actually discredit your Jesus to those who are basing their opinion of Him on you. Paul said to one group, "God's name is blasphemed among the Gentiles (that's the unbelievers) because of you." (Romans 2:24 ) Don't let that be you. Don't be a reason that someone doesn't come to Jesus because of the contradictions in your life. A drifting light can cost lives. If you go off on a little detour or take a timeout, you'll drag others along with you. You are the light! Stay anchored in Jesus, and never stop pointing people to Him! [Copyright Ronald P. It is not unusual for construction workers' hands to become very painful during the winter season from working with concrete, wet lumber, mud, etc. My hands were no exception that year. They were literally cracking open and bleeding at the joints in the fingers and thumbs. Stopping work because of hurting hands is simply not an option in the construction industry. You grit your teeth, keep working, and finish the job -- but do further damage to your hands in the process. The only respite occurs on weekends. My co-workers and I had been consoling each other daily on how bad our hands had gotten. The pain is similar to "paper cuts" occurring many times an hour. One morning I left for work at 5:00 a.m. to pour concrete, and pulled into a gas station to fuel up. As I got out of my truck, I noticed a newspaper delivery van and the driver struggling with bales of daily newspapers. I took a second look, and noticed that the man had some sort of birth defect and had no forearms. At the area where most people have elbows, he had appendages that looked more like an otter's flippers than hands. I was amazed to see him doing a job that would otherwise require a very physically gifted person. Still, he was somewhat struggling with the larger bundles, because his arms simply weren't long enough to encircle the bales. Instead he had to "pinch" the bundles and lift them with his stubby arms. On my way to pay for the gasoline, I stopped and asked him if I could help him in any way. He politely refused my offer. A few minutes later while I was refueling, he exclaimed, "Hey buddy, I could use some help. Would you mind tying my shoes for me?" As I was tying his shoes, he went on to explain that tying his shoes was the *only* thing he couldn't do for himself. He thanked me as I got in my truck and started to drive away. I came to a full stop and looked back at him as he was getting into his van. I looked down at my hands. Suddenly it hit me: I had been complaining about my hurting hands for weeks. That man back there would do anything, anything at all, to have my cracked and bleeding hands. Every winter when my hands start cracking and bleeding, I think back to that chance encounter in 1986. That man would do anything to have these hands. And just like magic, they stop hurting. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: ____ .-'& '-. / \ : o o ; ( (_ ) : ; \ __ / `-._____.-' /`"""`\ / , \ /|/\/\/\ _\ (_|/\/\/\\__) |_______| __)_ |_ (__ jgs (_____|_____) >THE FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY When Diane's 2-year-old grandson Oggie arrived, she picked him up for a hug. "Mmm," Diane said, "you smell good. What smells so good?" Oggie replied, "Screen saver." Myrtle's 3-year-old daughter was listening in on the conversation and she asked, "Mommy, is she going to the hospital to get her baby or is the doctor going to deliver it?" -- Anita Burney (of Kansas) who says her mother, Myrtle, told her that story many times. When he was five he received a little rubber knife. The blade of the knife receded when it was plunged into something, so that it looked life the knife had sunk deep into its prey. One morning Molly's mother was in the kitchen and she observed Bob pulling out an orange crate from the garage.
