Not so with me. Driving made me nervous. I didn't get a license until I turned 24 years old. As a result, when I first married, we only had one car and car pooled to work. My husband's hours were different from mine by one hour. I worked earlier. So he dropped me off and went to the diner to drink coffee until work time. Then, in the afternoons, I leisurely walked the three miles to his work place where I waited in his car, reading a book. One day while waiting for him, I noticed the most beautiful Cadillac pull in the lot. It was powder blue and sleek looking. The kind of car you dream about. I was busily admiring the car, when I noticed the driver. Honestly, she was probably the prettiest woman I had ever seen off the movie screen. She pulled into the spot beside our car and it was all I could do not to stare. There was a striking resemblance to Liz Taylor. Jet black hair and alabaster skin. Our eyes made contact and she smiled at me. Her eyes were as blue as the sea, and teeth like an even row of pearls. She was wearing a light blue shirt that just matched her car. Peeking through her long, softly curled hair I could see gold hoop earrings. They had to be gold to shine like that. A couple of minutes later, a nice looking man came out the building, entered her car, leaned over and kissed her and she drove away. Sitting there in my jeans, shirt and hair in a pony tail, I wanted to cry. How could some people have it all? Maybe I would have forgotten about her, but the following week, I saw her again. Then it became almost routine to see her about once a week. She seemed friendly and always waved, flashing a big smile. My envy lingered long after she drove away. Many nights when sleep evaded me, I would think about the beautiful lady. I wondered if she and her husband ate out, and where they dined, and what she was wearing. I wanted her to get out of the car and let me see her full length. Did she wear really high heeled shoes and pants, or a skirt. I would get my answers in a couple of weeks. Sitting in our usual parking lot, I was holding my book, watching her over the top of it. She was waiting and when her husband came to the car, she called to him. They spoke a few words and he opened the car door for her to step out. He took her arm and helped her out of the car. I could see very well as she moved to get out. She was wearing a skirt. She haltingly walked around to the passenger side very slowly, leaning on a walking cane. Sitting sideways in the car, she lifted one leg with her hands and then the other one. The beautiful lady had a prosthesis on the left leg and a brace on the right leg. I couldn't watch them drive away as the tears were blinding me. For weeks I had envied this woman and her way of life, while I had been able to walk three miles to our car! When my husband arrived and found me crying, he immediately asked what was wrong. Through my tears, I told him about the beautiful lady. He said he knew her husband and also knew the story. The beautiful lady and her parents were in a car that either stalled or got caught on the railroad tracks was hit by a train. Both parents were killed and she was severely injured. She was only 12 years old. The railroad made a large settlement with her because the crossing had no signals. He explained her car was specially built for her needs as well as the home. I prayed for forgiveness all the way home. The lady I thought had everything didn't. I thanked God over and over for my legs, arms and sight, and for teaching me a lesson early on in life. When you meet a person who seems to be much better off than you, don't be fooled. I would not have traded places with the beautiful lady for anything -- I still had my parents, and the ability to walk, run or dance through life. Wonderful things money can't buy. -- Clara Wersterfer __________________________________________________ Clara resides in Texas. =========================================================== >-->From Our Friend LouiseAu :) __ / \ /'. / | Some bunny loves you! ||'.\| | || \\ / /\ __ /^\/^\ \\ \\'```'-._ ; | /\ \ \ / \'./` __ `P | _/ /\_| `\/` \ .__|' ` -.| | ,' \ /^\/^\ \ .| - - | \ / \____,..-` \ _Y_ __/ `\/` / / `---'"""` `\ \| . __.._/ | '-.__.-""``.-./ |\ | ( _.'` |\ || .-| `` || || | ; || // jgs '-'\ //` `"""""""""`"""""` >HUGS (Author Unknown) There's something in a simple hug That always warms the heart; It welcomes us back home And makes it easier to part. Have You got a minute or two? You're pretty good at understanding, And I really need to talk to You. You see, Mommy came to tuck me in, Like she does every night. I was trying to play a trick on her, Since she can't see without the light. I was going to close my eyes And pretend to be asleep. But when I heard her crying, didn't dare let out a peep. She started talking to you, God. Did You hear the things she said? Could You hear what she was saying As she stood beside my bed? Why would Mommy be so sad? I wondered just what I had done, And then I began to remember it all As she named them one by one... This morning we worked in the garden, But, honest, I really didn't know That if I picked all those little yellow blooms The tomatoes wouldn't grow! Charlie and I were trying to be helpers, 'Cause I know that's what Mommy needs, But I don't think she was too happy with us When we pulled up carrots instead of weeds. Mommy said we should stop for the day, She decided we had helped quite enough. I sure had worked up an appetite... I didn't know gardening was so tough! We had peanut-butter and jelly for lunch, And I shared too much, I guess... But I didn't realize until I was done That Charlie had made such a mess. Mommy said she needed a nap, She had one of her headaches today. She told me to keep an eye on my sister And find something quiet to play. Well, God, do You remember all those curls You gave my little sister Jenny? We played barber shop...very quietly... And now, well, she doesn't have any. Boy, was Mommy mad at me... I had to go sit on my bed. She said never to cut "people hair" again. I guess I'll practice on Charlie instead. We sat and watched poor old Albert, I just knew he must be so bored Going round and round in the same place all day, Wouldn't You think so, Lord? I didn't think it would hurt to let him out for a while. I mean, mice need exercise, too. By the way, have You seen Albert lately? He's been sort of missing since two. Mommy sent us outside for the rest of the day. She said we needed fresh air. But when Daddy came home she told him He was trying to get something out of her hair. We thought Mommy needed cheering up, So we decided to brighten her day. But, God, did You see the look on her face When we gave her that pretty bouquet? We had gotten a little bit dirty, So Mommy said to get in the tub. "Use soap this time," she reminded, "and please don't forget to scrub." Charlie didn't like the water too much, But I lathered up real good. I knew Mommy would be so proud of me For cleaning up like I should. I went downstairs to the table, But during dinner it started to rain... I'd forgotten to turn off the water, it seems, And I hadn't unplugged the drain! I decided right then it was just about time To start getting ready for bed, When Mommy said, "It's sure been a long day," And her face began turning all red. I lay there listening to Mommy As she told You about our day. I thought about all of the things I had done And I wondered what I should say. I was just about to tell her That I'd been awake all along, And ask her to please forgive me For all of those thing I'd done wrong. When suddenly, I heard her whisper, "God, forgive me for today... For not being more understanding When those problems came my way... For not handling situations In the way You wanted me to... For getting angry and losing my temper, Things I know You don't want me to do. And, God, please give me more patience, Help me make it through another day, I'll do better tomorrow, I promise... In Jesus' name I pray." Wiping her eyes, she kissed me And knelt here beside my bed. She stroked my hair for a little while... "I love you, precious," Mommy said. She left the room without ever knowing That I'd been awake all the time. And God, could we make it our little secret? You know, just Yours and mine? I'm sorry I was so much trouble today, I really didn't mean to be... Daddy says it's tough being a kid sometimes, But I think it's harder on Mommy than me. Well, goodnight, God. Thanks for listening. It's sure nice to know You're there. I feel so much better when I talk to You 'Cause You always hear my prayer. And I'll do better tomorrow, I promise... Just You wait and see! I'll try not to be so much trouble again, But, God, please give more patience to Mommy... ...Just in case! -<>- .-o=o-. , /=o=o=o=\ .--. _|\|=o=O=o=O=| \ __.' a`\=o=o=o=(`\ / '. a 4/`|.-""'`\ \ ;'`) .---. \ .' / .--' |_.' / .-._) `) _.' / /`-.__.' / jgs `'-.____; /'-.___.-' `"""` >Help Wanted Clara Wersterfer Need Waitstaff and Housekeeping staff for Pride of 10 Cats Qualifications Must absolutely and with out reservations love and adore cats. By Tom Kovach When my father, Joe, a Hungarian immigrant, came to America in 1912, he was only 19 years old. As the oldest in his family, he felt it was his duty to work hard and send most of his earnings back to Hungary to help his parents and siblings. A Crook at the Lumberjacks' Table He soon landed a job working as a lumberjack in northern Michigan. As he later told me, he relished the physical work and loved the outdoors. In those vast forests he felt even closer to God. He and several other lumberjacks worked in a small camp for a large company. After they cut several hundred cords of wood, a company man would come to the camp once or twice a month and measure the amount of wood cut. The lumberjacks got paid according to the amount they cut. More wood, more pay. One November, when it was getting close to the company man's visit, several of my father's fellow workers seemed downcast and withdrawn. In his broken English, my father asked what the problem was. "I'll tell you what the problem is," said a man named Big Jake. "That company man, he's a crook!" "How so?" asked my father, who had been on the job for a few months. "Well," said Big Jake, "it works like this. When we measure the logs, this man, Pete, picks one of us to hold one end of the tape and walk ahead of him. He holds the other end. As we go along, Pete moves the tape a few feet further up so we get cheated out of several cords." "Why, that's dishonest!" exclaimed my father. "Of course it's dishonest!" cried Big Jake. "But we don't dare complain to the company because we're afraid of getting fired. We all have families to support." "Why doesn't another man just walk beside Pete to make sure he doesn't cheat?" "He won't allow it," said Jake, "Pete insists he only needs one man with him. Everyone else is sent to another part of the forest to work." Guess who's coming to dinner? It was a blustery November day when Pete was scheduled to arrive at the logging camp. Inside the lumberjacks' cabin, my father prepared pans of bread dough and a large ham to cook in the wood-burning stove. My father was a good cook and often prepared meals in addition to cutting trees. "What are you doing, Joe?" one of the men asked in alarm. "We were saving that ham for Thanksgiving!" My father smiled. "Never mind boys. We'll buy another ham for Thanksgiving. We're going to share this one with Pete." All the loggers gathered in the cabin thought my father had completely lost his mind. "We never feed that crook, Joe! How can you think of giving that man our food?" "Well, it's a cold day, and he's making a long trip. After all, Pete is a fellow human being," replied my father. The others just shook their heads. But there was no arguing with my father. Needless to say, when Pete, nearly frozen, came trudging up to the cabin, he was met by delicious smells coming from the cabin. Besides the ham, my father's homemade bread was enough to make anyone's mouth water. "Are you hungry, sir?" my father asked. Startled, Pete was at a loss for words. In the years he worked for the company, he had never been invited to a meal. Finally, he answered gruffly, "Why, yes. Yes, I am. Thank you." So they all sat down to a hearty feast of hickory-smoked ham, thick slabs of warm bread smothered in fresh butter, pickles right from the barrel, and mugs of hot coffee and sugar. Hospitality pays off The delicious meal and warm cabin made everyone relax. Even Pete joined in the conversation a little, encouraged by my father. The animosity between the loggers and Pete seemed to disappear like the smoke up the chimney. But after the meal, it was back to business. As Pete put on his coat, he asked my father, "Where did you learn to bake bread like that?" "As the oldest of eight children, I'd often help my mother in the kitchen. She taught me how to cook." "C'mon," Pete said, "we'll go measure the logs. You can help me hold the tape." Approaching the long rows of stacked logs, Pete handed one end of the tape to my father. "I'll walk in front," Pete said to my father's surprise. "You hold the tape in back." As they walked along my father had a fleeting thought. I could cheat Pete if I wanted to—giving him measurements longer than the real ones! But my father knew that two wrongs wouldn't make a right. He measured the wood as accurately as possible. As long as Pete trusted him, both the company and the workers would get a fair and honest measurement. That's the way it should be. After Pete left, my father told the other lumberjacks the total amount of wood he and Pete ended up with. "Ah," said Big Jake, "that's more like it. That sounds very close to what I figured." He slapped my father on the back, "Well done, Joe! I guess that bread of yours did go a long way!" "Sometimes it's good to try something different when there's a problem," my father said. "I guess even people like Pete can change." With a big grin he added, "When we get paid, we need to buy another ham!" When you are confronted by a police officer, Do Not show any resistance. They are trained to react first and think later to preserve their own life. Teach your children that a cop is someone to respect and not play around with. Never point anything at a police officer! As a woman with an officer as a daughter, I know they are NOT trained to shoot to wound - they are trained to shoot to kill simply because a wounded person with a weapon can still kill them but a dead one cannot. You must understand this and always respect an officer of the law. They do not mess around. They deal with life and death situations all the time. In order to take the bad guys away from harming others, they are well trained to make sure they not only prevail at doing this but stay alive as well. One thing to always remember about a cop - They are taught, 'Do not draw your gun unless you fully intend on using it.' If an officer has their weapon drawn, then you best make sure you don't have one and your hands are open, up and in plain sight so they know you are not a threat. Anything else is like playing Russian Roulette - You are at high risk. -<>- >From Our Friend Melody :) Check out What Is The Gospel? | Jesus is the Good News | What's in the Bible https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uppjUEzOwOg --- ...Wonderful! I'll never look at my hands the same! Grandpa, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench. He didn't move, just sat with his head down staring at his hands. When I sat down beside him he didn't acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat, I wondered if he was OK. Finally, not really wanting to disturb him but wanting to check on him at the same time, I asked him if he was OK. He raised his head and looked at me and smiled. "Yes, I'm fine. Thank you for asking," he said in a clear strong voice. "I didn't mean to disturb you, Grandpa, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK," I explained to him. "Have you ever looked at your hands," he asked. "I mean really looked at your hands?" I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point he was making. Grandpa smiled and related this story: "Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled, shriveled, and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life. They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special. They trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse and walked my daughter down the aisle. They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day, when not much of anything else of me works real well, these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer. These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of my life. But more importantly it will be these hands that Christ will reach out and take when He leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of God." I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember Christ reached out and took my grandpa's hands and led him home. When my hands are hurt or sore I think of Grandpa. I know he has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God. I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face. When you receive this, say a prayer for the person who sent it to you and watch God's answer the prayer work in your life. Let's continue praying for one another. Passing this on to anyone you consider a friend will bless you both. Passing this on to one not considered a friend is something Christ would have done. --- ...Amen! Thanks Linda! Hatmaker Joyce Schowalter Ohio, USA In August 1980 an ugly scene brought my 13-year marriage to an end. I fled our home with my two children, $5 and nowhere to go except my mother's. Staying there more than a couple nights wasn't an option. The next morning I headed out to find help. The welfare office referred me to an emergency agency that found a small apartment. It was dismal and in a rough area, but I had to make the most of it. A woman there wrote down an address and said to go tell "Brother Ed" she'd sent me. The address was a nondescript warehouse near a Catholic school. Inside, floor to ceiling held everything imaginable from furniture to clothing. A short, unassuming, thin Caucasian man approached, introduced himself as Brother Ed and asked how he could help. Scared to death about the future, I told him who sent me. Brother Ed led me through the packed maze to a clearing, his "office". He sat me down, offered a soda, and his lunch! He softly asked me to tell my story. He listened as it poured out... years of abuse, the fix we were in. He nodded, concerned, asked few questions, and accepted my tears. He offered neither sympathy, nor disapproval. When I felt too wrung out to speak, he went to work. We toured the place as he anticipated our needs, referring to himself in third person, as "Brother Ed". He selected twin beds for my children, a sofa bed for me, sheets, blankets, clothing, towels, washcloths, small kitchen appliances, cooking utensils, everything we'd need -- including ironing board and iron! With each step I felt more dumbfounded. Was I expected to pay? Nothing was new, but it represented a small fortune to me. I couldn't believe he was GIVING this stuff to us! Within minutes, a huge pile was gathered near the doors, and Brother Ed explained the furniture would be ready that afternoon. With his next question my heart sank, "Do you have a way to move everything?" As my mind whirled, he said, "You can use Brother Ed's van." I should return at 5 p.m. with helpers, load the van, move everything, then return the van. All matter-of-fact, as if he'd known me his entire life. Overwhelmed, I couldn't believe that he seriously would allow total strangers to disappear with his personal vehicle, possibly never to be heard from again! But that's exactly what happened. I did, of course, return Brother Ed's van along with my eternal gratitude. I later learned Brother Ed was a local Jesuit. The warehouse stored donations for the order's second-hand store. Though his vocation was helping others, I will ever remain indebted to Brother Ed. I do what I can to pay it forward. I've never forgotten his selflessness, and am still deeply touched and grateful, and can only guess how many lives he has touched. I truly believe Brother Ed saved me and my children. I know he saved my spirit. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From CupO'Cheer: ,"``", / (-\-| ___ | `-=-( /.-.\ .(`-.__/-,// || / \ | // Caring For The Flock... HOW THE SHEPHERD CARED FOR HIS FLOCK (edited) 1. He knew his sheep and called them by name, because he spent time with them and loved each one of them. 2. He had total responsibility for his sheep. 5. He would give his life for his sheep, i.e., if a wolf charge his sheep, he would stand between the wolf and his sheep. 6. She had a special gift she wanted to give to her husband for the holidays, but she was afraid they wouldn't be able to afford it. She started shopping for the gift in September knowing it was specialized piece of equipment and that not every store would sell it. She finally found it, and to her dismay it was well beyond their budget. So she came up with the idea of putting it on lay away and making payments. She pitched her idea to the store owner. He sympa- thized with her situation and said, "Since your husband is a policeman, I doubt that you're going to take advantage of me. Why don't you give me your first payment today, and I'll let you take the gift home now. Just be sure to make the payments and pick it up before Christmas." Terry agreed to the deal. But she was one of those people who couldn't keep a secret. She couldn't wait until Christmas to give her gift to her husband. That September night, Terry stood there beaming with a wrapped present on the kitchen table. She said, "Merry Christmas," and gave her husband a peck on the cheek. Neither of them realized at that moment how significant that gift would be. In fact, in the not-to-distant future, Terry's gift would mean the difference between life and death. On October 1st of that same year, Patrolman David Schafer was working the night shift and got a call on his police radio. A drug store was being robbed. David raced to the scene and arrived just in time to watch the suspect get into a car and speed away. David switched on his siren and began his pursuit. Only three blocks later, the suspect suddenly pulled his car over to the side of the road and stopped. He sat motionless behind the wheel of his car. David approached the vehicle with great caution. When he got three feet from the car, the suspect fired his pistol through the window and sent a .45 caliber slug into David's abdomen. Around 7:00 AM the next morning, Terry answered the door of her home only to be greeted by a police officer. He informed her that her that he had bad news and good news. The bad news was that her husband had been shot virtually point blank with a .45 while trying to apprehend a robbery suspect. As she listened, Terry was glad that she hadn't waited until Christmas to give David his gift. He had been shot and had survived. She was glad too that the shopkeeper had let her take the gift home that day. And what was the gift? It was a bulletproof vest. The good news was that David was in the hospital with only deep bruises...not a bullet wound. THOUGHT: Child of God, are you wearing your bulletproof vest? The only way the enemy can injure you is if you fail to put it on. KneEmail: "Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness." It's all about that little gold guy they call Oscar. Well, for some reason, the Hollywood news takes me back to a tour that our family did at Universal Studios some years ago. The tram took us through some scenes that would be familiar to veteran moviegoers - like a street in 1920s Chicago (you know, Al Capone style?), an Old West town, a World War II French village. Impressive stuff. It made you want to go in some of those buildings and check it out. Don't bother. When you open the door, there's nothing there. It's only a set. It looks really good on the outside, but it's empty on the inside. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You about "Oscars and Empty Houses." Now, sadly, there are a lot of lives like that. Oh, the outside looks great: smiles, style, success. Just don't open the door. Years ago, I was working with our local high school football team, and they actually won the state championship. And, I had some good relationships with the players, and I took one of their star linemen out to lunch after he had won it all you know, and we're talking about his aspirations for his senior year and he said, "Ron, when I was a junior I had three things I wanted. I wanted to win a championship, I wanted a scholarship, and I wanted lots of friends." I said, "Yeah." And he said, "Man, I got 'em all." I said, "That's awesome!" And then, well it was crazy. I'd never seen him with tears in his eyes, even when he was on the sidelines experiencing a lot of pain in the game. But he had tears in his eyes right in this restaurant. And he said, "Ron, I got everything I wanted." And then he said, "Why am I so empty?" Well, I'll tell you what...that's a question that lurks behind the "set" in a lot of people's hearts, "Why am I so empty?" The woman Jesus met at a well one day; she was one of them. As her story unfolds, we learn that she had had a lot of men in her life. We can guess she was pretty attractive, I guess, and even pursued. Well, she came to that well to draw water. And Jesus said, "Whoever drinks this water will be thirsty again." Think about those words, "Thirsty again." See, that's the problem with every "well" we go to for satisfaction in life - we inevitably end up "thirsty again." For this woman, every relationship - every guy - had been a well that left her empty inside. But then Jesus said, "Every one who drinks of the water I give him will have in him a well springing up to everlasting life" (John 4:13 ). Wow! Well, that day, that woman traded never-lasting for everlasting. Now, that was not an easy offer to make to us. See, He's still making that offer to all of us thirsty people today, because the hole in my heart is so big that only God can fill it. But for Jesus, it meant going to a cross to pay for the sins that separate us from God; that make a wall between us; that caused God to say in the Bible, "Your sins have separated you from your God." That's in Isaiah 59:2. And so, here is this wall between me and the God whose love I was made for, who knows the reason I'm here, and who has the keys to the heaven that I want to go to someday. But Jesus came and made the offer after a life of never-lasting things. "I can give you that which is everlasting. I want to put the well inside you so you don't have to depend on something outside you ever again." And He's the well. I wonder if there's ever been a time in your life when you've actually opened up your heart and said, "Jesus, I'm Yours?" Now, you may be religious and you may really do a lot of Christian things, and know a lot of Christian teachings. But there's never been that moment when you've made Him yours. Why don't you get that done today? Tell Him that today. Life with Jesus is more than a hollow set. There's life inside. [Copyright Ronald P. Hutchcraft. The Master passed on, with no word at all; He looked at a silver urn, narrow and tall; "I'll serve You, dear Master. I'll pour out Your wine. I'll be at Your table whenever You dine. My lines are so graceful, my carvings so true, The silver I'm made of will compliment You." Unheeding the Master passed on to the brass, It was wide-mouthed and shallow and polished like glass. "Here! Here!" cried the vessel, "I know I will do, Place me on Your table for all men to view." "Look at me," called the goblet of crystal so clear, "My transparency shows my contents are quite dear. Although I am fragile, I will serve You with pride, I am sure I'll be happy in Your house to abide." The Master came next to a vessel of wood, Polished and carved, it solidly stood. "You may use me," dear Master, the wooden bowl said, "But I'd rather You used me for fruit, not for bread!" Then the Master looked down, saw a vessel of clay. It was empty and broken where it helplessly lay. No hope had the vessel the Master might choose, To cleanse it, to fill it, make it whole, fit for use. "Ah!" said the Master, "This vessel I choose. I will mend it and fill it and put it to use. I need not the vessel with pride in its self; Nor the one who is narrow to sit on the shelf; Nor the one who is big-mouthed and shallow and loud; Nor one who displays his contents so proud; Nor the one who thinks he can do all things just right; But this plain earthy vessel filled with My power and might. He then gently lifted the vessel of clay, To mend it and cleanse it, He filled it that day. He spoke to it kindly, "There's work you must do, Just pour out to others as I pour into you." --- ...Awww, a sweet one. Thanks LouiseAu! The Master knows - Giving = Receiving!
