'| / | \ | / )) |____|/ |`-----' /_____)) `-----' `------' cf >A HUMBLE LOAF OF BREAD by Bobbi Hahn It seemed like the perfect gift for my father. You know how hard it is for adult children to select gifts for their parents. After all, what do they want and/or need, really? Flannel shirts and ties had been given in abundance over the years, and since he'd retired, shopping became even more difficult. He was passionate about photography, but I wouldn't have had the slightest idea of what sort of equipment he might like. He was a marvelous gardener, but the tiny garden at their row house in Philadelphia (before they were known as town homes) had no need of plants or seeds in December! I had discovered a wonderful cookbook called Visions of Sugarplums, by Mimi Sheraton, and decided to make something for him from it because it contained recipes from all the countries that celebrate Christmas. He was of Czech descent, and the recipe for a sweet, braided bread containing almonds sounded perfect because he loved anything I made, and he also had a sweet tooth. We purchased all of the ingredients, and my husband numbered the braids in the illustration so we'd be able to keep them straight. It smelled divine as it baked, and I was thrilled with its crusty golden color when I removed it from the oven. We were living in Ohio by that time, so I packed it carefully with their other Christmas gifts and sent it off to Philadelphia. I was not prepared for its reception. My father called with lavish praise for the bread, saying he couldn't believe his eyes when he opened the aluminum foil. With great emotion, he told me that when he and his brothers were very young boys, it was traditional for the bread -- called vanocka -- to be prepared every Christmas Eve. I had given him back a beloved childhood memory, all without thinking! Legend said that every living being in the house had to partake of the bread before midnight of Christmas Eve, for luck. So all the dogs and cats, the occasional mouse, and whatever other creatures lived under their roof had to have a morsel. That year, my husband and I began a tradition for our sons by preparing a vanocka for our home, as well. Cats and dogs were treated to a bite, much to the delight of our young sons. I made the bread each Christmas until my father died. That year, I just couldn't bring myself to make it because it brought back memories of how happy I'd made him with such a simple gift, and it broke my heart that he would no longer enjoy it. I haven't made it in the several years since. But this year, I'm going to have flour dust all over my kitchen again, and the scent of baking bread and roasted almonds will fill the air. Our youngest son and his wife will be sharing Christmas with us, and it's time to remember the joy a humble loaf of bread unwittingly brought to my daddy. -- Bobbi Hahn __________________________________________________ Bobbi is a freelance writer, poet and calligrapher who lives with her husband and two cats beside a lagoon on a barrier island off the coast of South Carolina. She says, "The book is still available, so if you're looking for some marvelous, traditional Christmas recipes, find a copy! It's amazing how similar some of the recipes are from one country to another, differing only by a few ingredients. One country might use almonds, another walnuts. I love these traditions!" As a group, our office at work does a couple of Christmas Cheer hampers, targeting families in need. This year, it is two families from a Women's Shelter. One is a mom with five children, the other mom has four children. They live in suites at the shelter because it's a safe haven for them -- a life away from the abuse they have endured at the hands of their husbands or boyfriends. Donations to the hampers have been rather sparse so far, although we still have several days before the delivery date. It will pick up. It always does. One of the men who works on my floor came to me with an $80 cash donation. It was money, he said, that had been given to him in memory of his mother who passed away last December 21. He had saved it while pondering a suitable charitable organization to donate it to, and decided on this women's shelter. A very generous and kind man to think of this. His mother would have liked it, he said. The money will be used towards gifts or clothing for the children, and gift cards to grocery stores. Meanwhile, our office receives a daily newspaper, delivered in any weather by a faithful carrier. Yesterday, we got a card from the newspaper carrier wishing us a Merry Christmas and advising us of his contact information in case of a delivery problem. He also enclosed a self-addressed envelope if we should wish to provide him with a gratuity. My first thought was, "Oh yeah. Merry Christmas, and where's my tip?" But then I realized he delivers to downtown businesses and most likely never gets a thank you, let alone a gratuity. My workplace pays the invoice but I have never seen anything additional included. It made me think of that movie "Pay It Forward" that came out a few years ago. When I get my paper delivered at home, my paper carrier gets a much deserved gratuity at Christmas, so I thought I would surprise the office paper carrier and send him one myself. After all, 'tis the season, right? I slipped a twenty dollar bill into the envelope and mailed it off with an unsigned note of appreciation. I know it's not much but I hope he at least appreciates the thought. The man at work who made the generous donation in the name of his mother made me think of passing it on. Maybe the carrier will be inspired to do something for someone else too. I'd like to think so. In the spirit of Christmas, I encourage you to pay it forward or pass it on if you are so inspired. Do it because you want to, without expecting anything in return. Do it in the name of Christmas! -- Maria Harden __________________________________________________ Maria has written for Heartwarmers in the past, as well as other on-line publications and anthologies. They asked how old Jesus was. I think it is pretty telling that while Christians are out-numbered by Muslims and Buddhists etc, that it is our faith that the world keeps track of their calendar year with - according to our God's only begotten Son. Not Mohamed's or Buddha's etc, - “B.C.” stands for the English phrase “before Christ,” but “A.D.” stands confusingly for a Latin phrase: anno domini (“in the year of the Lord” - the year Jesus was born). - That's what the whole world's calendar goes by - Our Lord - Jesus Christ! Gotta love God! He is the only true one. After enjoying a wonderful dinner with the family on Christmas Day, the grandkids were settled in and chose to watch The Simpsons on TV. At first it was an older silly one that made us smile and laugh at Homer's antics. Then they had one on that was a newer one. The show centered around how a church man wanted to teach Creationism in the class room. It greatly upset Lisa who idolizes Darwin as being the smartest man there ever was. So to teach something other than evolution from ape to man was horrifying and wrong to her. The show made us all feel sorry for poor Lisa. Then her mom, Marge, came to the rescue saying there is room for both but not together. So then Lisa was happy and the show ended with her telling the church man she respected his belief but just as he would not want science taught in his church that she felt that his faith should not be taught in school. I told my son that the left even takes away the funny of the Simpsons and uses it to indoctrinate our youth! I told him that I think science being taught in church is great as long as it is true facts and not filled with hypothesis. After all, I think the discovery of DNA pretty well proves everything didn't 'just happen' or evolve over time but like a computer program, was carefully thought out and planned by one supreme being - that would be God! Affirmations: Marvin and I were driving home from a wedding just west of Olympia, Washington. As is our habit when we drive, we began to talk about things that are important to us. This day we were discussing the New Year goals, resolutions and plans. Because the previous year had been a year of transition for us, we decided to discuss and re-affirm the commitments we had made to God many years ago. What was it we would continue to do with all our hearts and minds and souls? What would we pour our lives into this year? Here are some of the affirmations we made to God and to each other for the year: 1. We will continue to love the Lord our God with all of our heart, soul and strength. 2. We will continue serving Him - our aim is to please God in all of our ways. 3. We will continue to use (read and obey) the Bible as the standard for our lives. 4. We will continue to love and be faithful to each other. 5. We will continue to love and be faithful to our children and grandchildren. 6. We will continue to give our tithes and offerings to the Lord. 7. We will continue to work hard and do the best we can to win people to Christ and help the unfortunate around the world. There were more, but these were the most important to us. How about you? Do you write out your commitments to God? If not, I encourage you to do so. Keep them in your Bible, so they are always before you. Father, we love to do Your will! We love to serve You! Thank You for giving us the grace, the will and power to follow Your ways. Although the old man and his clothes were spotlessly clean, he wore jeans, a denim shirt and boots that were very worn and ragged. In his hand he carried a worn out old hat and an equally worn out Bible. The church he entered was in a very upscale and exclusive part of the city. It was the largest and most beautiful church the old cowboy had ever seen. The people of the congregation were all dressed with expensive clothes and accessories. As the cowboy took a seat, the others moved away from him. No one greeted, spoke to, or welcomed him. They were all appalled at his appearance and did not attempt to hide it. As the old cowboy was leaving the church, the preacher approached him and asked the cowboy to do him a favor. "Before you come back in here again, have a talk with God and ask him what he thinks would be appropriate attire for worship." The old cowboy assured the preacher he would. The next Sunday, he showed back up for the services wearing the same ragged jeans, shirt, boots, and hat. Once again he was completely shunned and ignored. The preacher approached the man and said, "I thought I asked you to speak to God before you came back to our church." "I did," replied the old cowboy. "If you spoke to God, what did he tell you the proper attire should be for worshiping in here?" asked the preacher. "Well, sir, God told me that he didn't have a clue what I should wear. I did not want to put a tree up, but the kids were all for it. So we dragged out the box of ornaments and the tree. In the box with the tree was a notebook. I opened the book. It was a semi-journal from my deceased wife. It was her way of being there that Christmas. In this notebook, she wrote how much she loved me and what a difference I had made in her life. I had a great difficulty in reading the words through misty eyes, yet felt warm and close to her. She went on and wrote about the fact she was dying and how she wanted to thank me for being there for her and with her. That year for Christmas dinner, I set a place for her at the table. She was present with us that Christmas and had given me a present I will always treasure. I have learned to write about my life, about my friends, because in doing so, I can share the magic that has been given me. Merry Christmas one and all. - B.J. I remember once when my father gave her ten dollars (he owed thousands), she cried. She worked two jobs to support us and I sold donuts in the neighborhood (I made 25 cents for every box sold). We didn't have a car, but we had each other. The divorce was tough on mom and on me. The stigma of a divorced woman back in the early 50's is so much different than today. If I wanted to see a movie I would go downtown on Saturdays, catch a serial, a feature for free. I would walk home to save the 25 cents for the bus ride. The walk was about eight miles one way. The point is, Christmas was an imposing time for us. How could we have money for Christmas. Well mom had an idea. She bought us a red plaster pig and we would put pennies into it. As Christmas would near, the pig would divulge it's contents and that would be our Christmas. I know this pig holds about 30-35 dollars in pennies. I would get 1/2 of the money and mom would get 1/2 and off we would go to buy our presents. A person can get a lot for 15 dollars if they are careful, pencils, papers, some board games, a few books, some toys could all be purchased for less than 15 dollars. I would buy mom some costume jewelry, perfume and maybe a teddy bear. No we didn't have the expensive gifts, but we had ourselves a wonderful Christmas each year thanks to our special pig (which I still have). - B.J. Mazzella My youngest son doesn't talk much. He has severe Autism that hampers his ability to speak and communicate. It also locks him in his own world much of the time. Yet, when he laughs and smiles he can light up the darkest day. Sometimes he will break into a spontaneous spasm of giggles for no apparent reason at all. When this happens my daughter and I will often joke that his dearly departed Grandma and her angel friends must be tickling him. The other night while I was busy working at my desk I once more heard his musical laughter behind me. I asked, "Son are the angels tickling you again?" and got an even louder burst of giggles as an answer. I smiled and turned around to see him. There he stood under the ceiling fan with its glass globe glowing above his head like a halo. Dangling from it too was a glass angel figurine that we had tied to the light cord years before. Both the angel and my son seemed to sparkle in the light before my eyes. It was then that I realized that my daughter and I had been right all along. God did have His angels watching over my angel. I was sure too that they were sharing in every bit of laughter and joy that he was blessing this world with. The word angel originally meant "messenger". That is what my son is to me and to everyone he meets. Some people with closed minds and shut down hearts might look at him and see him as less than human. To me he is more than human. He is an angel whose messages are ones of unconditional love and unlimited joy. He may not say many words but his soul speaks volumes. He may appear handicapped in the eyes of Earth, but in the eyes of Heaven his light is among the brightest. I know as well that angels are watching over his every move and joining in his every laugh. I only pray that my own heart will remain open to the lessons he teaches and that my pen will allow me to share them with you. May the laughter of angels always bless your life as well. -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment: Paradox Of Our Times! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/paradoxofourtimes.html One Day! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/poems/oneday.html Friends Together! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/poems/together.html It Takes Two! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/poems/two.html Chosen Children? http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/BibleStudy/choosehischildren.html Let's Dance http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/dance.html Day And Night http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/dayandnight.html Keep On Smiling http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/smiling.html That's God!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/thatsgod.html Rich VS Poor!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/richvspoor.html Thank You God!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/thankgod.html No Words Needed!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/nowords.html My Precious Child!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/mychild.html Amazing Blind Artist!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/blindartist.html Akiane Child Prodigy!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/prodigy.html Attitude Is Everything 5!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/attitude5.html Creation VS Coincidence!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/creationvscoincidence.html Hong Kong's Noah's Ark!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/noahsark2.html BIBLE: Return To Me - God!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/BibleStudy/return.html Alzheimer's Through Artist Eyes!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/dementiaandart.html BIBLE: Our Valuable ANCHOR!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/BibleStudy/ouranchor.html Christmas And New Year's Index!- http://www.shangralas.com/ -<>- The Spiritual Battle Is Fought With sWORDS https://tinyurl.com/whem29m PTSD From Losing A Child Is Real And Misunderstood https://tinyurl.com/wzbjzos -<>- >In The News: President Donald J. Now all those passengers are waiting for their suitcase to arrive on the baggage carousel along with passengers from a couple of other flights. And to think people pay to go to the zoo! There are times when that crowd of people gets pretty big and we're all crammed together in an area that can get pretty wall- to-wall. Recently the claustrophobia got worse than ever, they have put up a wall that reduces the already limited space. You could get pretty steamed about it if you didn't realize that wall was there to cover up some construction that's in progress. See, they are improving and enlarging that whole area! Now how do they make us feel good about this crunch in the meantime? They put up a sign on that construction wall and it seemed to do the job. I didn't forget it and it said this, "Thanks for your patience. We are getting rid of yesterday so we can get ready for tomorrow." That's God's construction strategy, too, for improving and enlarging your life. Our word for today from the Word of God, Philippians 3:13-14. Paul says, "One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." Or, I am getting rid of yesterday so I can get ready for tomorrow. Well, are you hanging on to yesterday. Those construction people at the airport have to make a choice. Shall we hang onto what's been in the past or leave that behind and build something for the future? You can't have both. They can't have the future if they keep hanging onto the past, and neither can you. It may be that you are writing the verse this way, "Dwelling on what is behind," "remembering what is behind." You won't let go of the past: the hurts, the slights, the pain, the problems, the miss understandings, the grudge, and the resentments. You keep reliving and replaying them and consequently you have pretty much identified your place in life, I'm a victim. And you may very well have been a victim. But you will be tomorrow a victim, only if you insist on carrying your yesterday into your tomorrow. You've got Jesus now. Your identity is "child of God," not victim. Your tomorrows need to be focused on pursuing what Jesus can make you, not what your past has made you. Maybe the yesterdays you won't forget are your failures. You've got to leave them behind, too. You cannot change the past, and the Devil would love to have you focused on what can't be changed. Then you're a slave for life. Jesus wants you to focus on what can be changed, the future. That has yet to be written. You can determine right now, no matter what the past has been that the rest of your days will be the best of your days and that your past will not infect your future. You draw a line today. The choice is clear, just like that construction company; you have to choose between yesterday or tomorrow. Dwelling on your yesterdays will cost you what your tomorrows could have been. Releasing your yesterdays, deliberately moving past them, makes room for what God wants to build in your future. Jesus is in the construction business with you, getting rid of yesterday so He can get ready for tomorrow. Each moment is a new moment to start over and begin again. God wants to walk with you. He loves you and wants to help you make adjustments. He wants you to realize your potential. Will you let Him help? Will you work with Him to change?" - Melinda Clements & Chris Long _______ | | | |---+---| | | O|_ | | \/\ \ | | /\) ejm | |`' |\__ |___|___| `\ >Start Over!
