It's the most important thing they will learn in order to cope with today's life style. Forget the history, English grammar, spelling, math, penmanship or algebra. Just make sure they learn the alphabet and how to use a cell phone and a computer. This will leave them more time for music, sports, driving lessons, video games, dancing and memorizing the abbreviations needed for text messaging. EVERY thing is brief form. The other day my driver's license came due for renewal. I got in my SUV, checked my GPS for directions to the DMV to renew my D/L or ID. My MD's office was in route, so I took the ramp to ISH 35. I wanted to stop by about my tests. Talked to the RN who got the PA to tell me the results of my EKG, MRI, and CBC. The PA said I had to take some meds so gave me an RX. Back in the SUV, I heard the signal on my phone for a message. It was from my son: "Hi Ma, gl on tsts @md. b lte 2 nite mb 7 r 8. Cul hagd. (Hi Mother, good luck on test at the doctor's. I will be late tonight, might be 7 or 8 o'clock. See you later. Have a good day.) I replied, "Dn't b 2 lte. ant tess cmng 4 din. lu (Don't be too late. Aunt Tess is coming for dinner. Love you) I popped in a CD and drove to the DMV. A mile down the road there was a car accident. Everything seemed under control as the SHP, FD and EMS were on the job. Had to make one more stop before going home. Needed money from the ATM at FCU where we banked. I don't know where all this stuff got started using abbreviations instead of words. Maybe FDR started it with WPA or FBI. Could have been the PTA. Who knows? It surely seems to be here to stay and happily growing. I'm just glad to have enjoyed working puzzles and breaking codes all my life or I would not have a place in this world. It's easy to understand why the kids do not need all that extra learning baggage to carry around in their heads. Who cares about history or English grammar? They don't intend to write anything they can abbreviate and type. Spelling? That's a bad word. Too many letters. English literature or history may be of interest if someone makes a movie of it, but grammar? She's the mother of your father. Heck, they already speak another language understood only by them. If you can't beat them, join them, I say. TTYL. HAG8D TA4N. (Talk to you later. Have a great day. My father had just retired from the Air Force, and my family moved from Zweibrucken, Germany, to South Carolina. I hadn't seen my parents since they bought their new house and moved in, so I was anxious to go see them. I left Alexandria, Virginia, early in the morning, in my 1986 Ford Escort. Somehow I knew my car might have a problem on the trip down south; the odometer had 140,000 miles on it. Near Kenly, North Carolina, my car stopped dead in its tracks. Two young men stopped and offered me a ride, but I asked them to call the police for me instead. Then another car approached, and a kind-looking, older man stepped out. He thought I was his son's girlfriend, whom I resembled. He said he also had a funny feeling -- as though he was pulled into the opposite direction to see who was stranded by the side of the road. But even once he saw that I was not his son's girlfriend, he still offered to help. The man identified himself as a Baptist minister. Just as I knew something might go wrong with my car, somehow I knew I could trust him. He arranged for a tow truck to take my car to the closest garage, then asked me to accompany him to a hospital, where he was due to pray for some patients. He then took me home to put me up for the night with his family. His wife and son were surprised to have a visitor, but were equally hospitable. The son did a double take when he saw me; I guess I really looked a lot like his girlfriend. The next day, the minister drove me to Raleigh airport, the nearest place with a car rental agency, to get a car to finish my trip. My car would be repaired while I visited my parents. The next day, the minister drove me to the Raleigh airport car rental agency, so I could finish driving home. My car would be repaired while I visited my parents. When I returned to Raleigh, the minister had arranged to meet me again. He drove with me to return the rental car, then to the garage to pick up my car. When all this happened, I didn't have much money or experience. I don't know what I would have done if he had not come along. My dad made a contribution to his parish as thanks, but this man's kindness was beyond price. Today, my husband and I try to pay this kindness forward. We both help people who are stranded by the side of the road, and at other times, whenever we can. by Gabriele --- ...So sweet! '.__|_.' >THE FIVE AND DIME by Diane Dean White I don't see them very often nowadays, but most baby boomers remember them. They were located on the main street of most towns and in each city. They went by a variety of names, but they always appealed to us for one reason on another. They may have been known as the Ben Franklin Store, S.S. Kressge, Woolworth's or just the drug store on the corner. They often had doors that were large and hard to pull, or more often, the kind that revolved and one person at a time went in. They were a place where young children could buy a small turtle or a gold fish for ten cents and carry it home in small white cartons. Teens gathered to try on some neat sun glasses or glance over the latest shades of lipsticks. Most trips ended at the soda fountain over a cherry Coke or a hot fudge sundae. The main idea was that so many items were sold for such a small price and you could get a variety of things at the Five and Dime. Mothers would come in and check over the yard goods and look through Vogue, McCall's and other books with patterns. One area displayed a variety of favorite magazines. It was a time when we knew the store manager or owner, and we always said hello and acted polite, because the store owner also knew our Mom and Dad. Often the Five and Dime had a counter with stools and sometimes booths where we could order fries, a cheeseburger and a shake. They also had a daily special, for working men who would frequent the Five and Dime. Women in starched uniforms and aprons would wait on the customers. Their hair was done up and covered neatly with a hair net. The booths with the large seats were big enough for three girls on one side and three guys on the other. We'd opt for the booths over the swivel stools at the counter, or the heavy straight chairs at a table, because each booth had a small juke box with the favorite selections. When the Thanksgiving holiday came we knew where the decorations were kept, as harvest scenes with pilgrims and turkeys and pumpkins were placed in a central location for all to see. Very often, a large box for canned food donations was placed for customers to remember those less fortunate, and people back then always did. We never saw a Christmas decoration until the first week in December, and we could hardly wait to see the toys and items that were so popular that year. Usually there was a manger scene with a bright star over it, and Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus were set up as a welcome display. A real Christmas tree would be covered with lights ten sizes larger than the ones we see today. Some tinsel and an angel on top would complete the decor. The special town tree would be located exactly where it grew, and that might be anywhere along the main street, away from the parking, but in view for all to see. On a special night, the store might stay open a little later to invite customers to shop a little longer. The smell of freshly made popcorn, peanut brittle, hot chocolate and coffee would remind us that the time of year for being extra good was here. We'd look at a special pair of skates or see a train set with a whistle tooting, as it made stops along the tracks, while in the background a record with Gene Autry would play, as he sang Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. In the late 60s land developers began to visualize a compact shopping experience, where customers could go into a variety of stores. After parking their car, they could go from one end of a mall to another, being able to purchase everything from clothing, to bath and bedroom linens, with a maternity shop, jewelry store and often a few small specialty shops. By the mid 70s they were going up all over, and the small Five and Dime Stores were beginning to become a thing of the past. When we pass through a town today and I see a Five and Dime, or what used to be one, I often ask my hubby to stop because I know there are so few left. There is something nostalgic about a visit back to the 50s where so much fun and great buys could be found at these places. "Honey, do you want to go over to the mall and look around?" my husband will ask. And I think of how much we have lost to progress, while my mind goes back to a simpler time and memories of a juke box playing Mr. Blue, and all the great things found at the corner Five and Dime. -- Diane Dean White -<>- .---. .---. ,';' `.';' `.. f :Bo. ` d88: `\ /d88P' `\ ; /d888P' `. He decided to take along a couple hundred folded paper cranes to pass out to people who stopped at his booth. Before that day, however, something strange happened - a voice told him to find a piece of gold foil paper and make a gold origami crane. The strange voice was so insistent that Art actually found himself rummaging through his collection of origami papers at home until he found one flat, shiny piece of gold foil. "Why am I doing this?" he asked himself. Art had never worked with the shiny gold paper. It didn't fold as easily or neatly as the crisp multicolored papers. But that little voice kept nudging. Art harrumphed and tired to ignore the voice. "Why gold foil anyway? Paper is much easier to work with." He grumbled. The voice continued, "Do it! And you must give it away tomorrow to a special person." By now Art was getting a little cranky... "What special person?" he asked the voice. "You'll know which one," the voice said. That evening Art very carefully folded and shaped the unforgiving gold foil until it became as graceful and delicate as a real crane about to take flight. He packed the exquisite bird in the box along with about 200 colorful paper cranes he'd made over the previous few weeks. The next day at the mall, dozens upon dozens of people stopped by Art's booth to ask questions about origami. He demonstrated the art. He folded, unfolded and refolded. He explained the intricate details, the need for sharp creases. Then there was a woman standing in front of Art. The special person. Art had never seen her before, and she hadn't said a word as she watched him carefully fold a bright pink piece of paper into a crane with pointed, graceful wings. Art glanced up at her face, and before he knew what he was doing, his hands were down in the big box that contained the supply of paper cranes. There it was, the delicate gold-foil bird he'd labored over the night before. He retrieved it and carefully placed it in the woman's hand. "I don't know why, but there's a very loud voice inside me telling me I'm supposed to give you this golden crane. The crane is the ancient symbol of peace." Art said simply. The woman didn't say a word as she slowly cupped her small hand around the fragile bird as if it were alive. When Art looked up at her face, he saw tears filling her eyes, ready to spill out. Finally the woman took a deep breath and said, "My husband died three weeks ago. This is the first time I've been out, today..." She wiped her eyes with her free hand, still gently cradling the golden crane with the other. She spoke very quietly, "Today is our golden wedding anniversary." Then this stranger said in a clear voice. "Thank you for this beautiful gift. Now I know that my husband is at peace. Don't you see? That voice you heard. It's the voice of God and this beautiful crane is a gift from Him. It's the most wonderful 50th wedding anniversary present I could have received. Thank you for listening to your heart." - Author Unknown -<>- , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' >From Bob Raines of Benton Arkansas A Personal Testimony and My Life Verses "And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him." 1 John 5:14-15 I have almost totally limited my reading to The Bible. When I say The Bible, I am referring to the KJV - 1611. I am convinced that it is the only reliable translation of God's Word for the English Speaking World. I am not a scholar and do not claim to be. I did go to a Bible School and graduated with a B+ average for the three year course that I took. After having finished my course and receiving my diploma I have concluded that it I had to make a choice of going to a Bible School or getting up in the early hours and spending time in God's Word, that I would skip the Bible School. As to my reading habits, I read short inspirationals. At this time in my life it is rare for me to read a commentary unless I am researching a specific thought. I read some inspirationals and enjoy them just as I enjoyed the article that you sent. I am convinced that I am a member of the denomination that stays as close as humanly possible to the teaching of God's Word. I am also convinced that I went to the school that God directed me to. As a child I was raised in a small country church. At age 11 Dad went to California in search of work. We moved to Vallejo where Dad went to work as an electrician on the Naval Base. During that period my family failed to become associated with a local church and I grew up and away from God. I do not go into details of what or where because the important thing is my Relationship with my Lord Jesus. At age 27 I came to the place of a real concern about my relationship with God. At that time I was not convinced of denomination and was not concerned about labels. I began an honest search for truth. From that I began an examination of my personal life and habits. I realized that I was far too easily moved by man and more especially those that I lived with and around. For that reason I moved back to Arkansas, the place of my birth and early religious training. I located a man that I knew as a child because he was a respected man in the community and a deacon in a church that I had joined as a child. I hoped that he could give me some answers. I was fortunate at that time that he did not invite me into his home. I really wanted to go in and sit down to listen to a man that would give me some extensive answers. He instead quoted two verses which I have adopted as my life verses. 1 John 5:14-15. "And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. 1 John 5:14-15 Because of that man's lack of answers I was forced to continue my search and research. I went to the church that he went to and after several attempts to find answers I went away empty. I went to the Seminary Campus that that denomination supported and as a walked the hall looking for some individual to talk to all I found was busy people that I felt inferior to so I left without speaking to a soul. I read every piece of religious literature that I could obtain and talked to as many individuals that I came in contact with. Very few had time to talk. I do not know of one single individual that showed any interest in me so I moved on. I did meet a man that told me about a young lady that he would like to introduce me to. He said that if I met her that I would marry her. He was right. That was over thirty- eight years ago. I John 5:14-15 gave me a good basis to examine issues of life with. At age twenty-seven I was able to remember the clearly the most important event that took place in my life. I remembered the Sunday Evening Church Service that I responded at the altar call and received Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. I did not respond because of human pressure. In fact I had to move fast to keep my Mother from grabbing my arm to stop me. My assurance of my salvation is based on the Authority of God's Word. I am not convinced because of man. I am convinced because of my personal relationship with my Saviour and the Authority of His Word. As I began to grow spiritually God gave me more knowledge of His Word and a better understanding of His Gift of Salvation. Plan of Salvation 1. Problem of Sin Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 2. Price of Sin Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. 3. Price of Sin Paid Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 4. Pathway to Paradise Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Who is he talking about - 'donor class'? Come on! Most all of us Trump supporters are hard working families unlike the Democrat donors who are from the elite of Hollywood, music and high-end gated communities! Donor class - pshaw! Just another example of an unhinged Democrat that by any means - by hook or by crook - will try to get his way - like a spoiled brat that throws a tantrum and violently lashes out when someone doesn't give him what he wants! I'm tired of all their violence and hate mongering! I trust Pres.Trump - he says he needs more Republicans to get his (our) agenda done. We already know that ALL Democrats will resist and do as they have been doing which is to just sit on their hands and not work to improve America. Why we pay them is beyond me! They'll join together to resist and vote with Nancy Pelosi no matter if they campaign saying they were with Pres. Trump on some hot issues like Kavenaugh, law and order, our military, illegal immigration, lowing taxes, continuing to bring jobs back to America, energy independence from foreign countries, NASA and Pres. Trump's Space program so we don't have to rely on Russia to fix our own satellites and space equipment, lowering health care costs and keeping coverage for preexisting conditions and abortion - they won't actually vote With the Republicans for anything Trump wants! The Democrats stick together like glue and sing the 'all for one and one for all song' of resistance! Not to mention, they'll continue to waste our taxpayer money on disrupting government duties by trying to find something bad to impeach Trump with when he has been doing an excellent job of leading America! I was listening some to Oprah just now, she sounded like a Republican until I heard her say that Republicans are just using fear. I think results matter... Because of Pres. Trump, after less than 2 years, we have NO more ISIS fears which Obama said was here to stay and we just had to get used to it. With Trump - No more North Korean rocket fears which Obama said would be Trump's biggest problem. No more bad deals with other countries making us look like easy marks and patsies to our enemies and allies alike. No more taking our wealth and jobs away from our most vulnerable citizens which Obama said would take a magic wand to get these jobs to come back to America. Under Pres. Trump we now have the lowest unemployment numbers EVER for our minorities and lowest unemployment numbers in 65 years for our women! Why change this amazing path? I think Oprah and the Democrats are the ones using fear since they have no good policies that'll win the hearts of the America people! All they do is point at Republicans stirring up hate and violence. Yet who are the ones going after people in restaurants, movies, patriot prayer rallies and in the streets yelling and even spitting in their faces using bully tactics to intimidate and harass them? Democrats! Doing just what Maxine Waters told them to do - make them feel they are not welcome anywhere! Also who did a recent burning up a truck because it had Trump stickers on it along with throwing bricks and breaking GOP campaign windows and actually shooting up a Republican office? Certainly not Republicans! Democrats! Doing what Holder told them to do - kick them when they are down! The violent hate mongers are all left-leaning Democrats! Sorry Oprah, you sound good, but you aren't speaking about today's Democrats. SO, I will do what Pres. Trump wants and vote full Republican Nov.6th. If the left wants to get mean, they forget, we have the guns - Not that we'd want to go that way, but just saying. King Joyce Schowalter Illinois, USA I am an adult with Autism and my consulting work requires a lot of out-of-state airline travel. Airports and air travel are very overwhelming for me. One day this October I woke at 4:30 a.m. to travel out of state, traveling and working until 10:30 p.m. that night. As I flew home the next day, after two hours wait at a layover airport my flight home was canceled 20 minutes before boarding. I called customer service, and by the time I reached someone I was told to go to the customer service desk. The line was at least 100 people deep -- and not moving. Then they announced that there were no more flights that night; we'd have to stay overnight after booking another flight. I began to shake and my eyes began to tear up as I contemplated standing in this 100-person line for a prolonged time. Due to my Autism I was overloaded and beginning to shut down, which made it hard to think and hard to speak. I called my wife Cathy for help. She heard how much difficulty I was having even thinking. She remained calm and guided me step by step. Cathy told me to look for a person who transports special needs people around the airport. I found someone and said, "I have Autism, they canceled my flight and don't have any more flights and I need to get home." The woman, Shawn, gently took my bags, told me to sit down in her tramcar, and said she knew someone who could help. Shawn drove me to another part of the airport, then left me briefly to talk to someone about helping me. My wife kept talking to me the whole time. Shawn came back with a gentleman, Dale, who held a boarding pass with my name on it for a flight an hour and a half after my original flight. I am grateful and humbled to my core by how generously and tenderly I was taken care of by my soul mate and two complete strangers that day. Thank you doesn't even describe it but I'll say it. Thank you, Shawn and Dale at the Philadelphia Airport, you did your employer, U.S. Airways a tremendous honor by how you conducted yourselves. There is absolutely no value in going through your life stubbornly refusing to ask others for help. I was seconds away from a full-blown meltdown at the airport so I called my wife Cathy who helped me find Shawn. Shawn led me to her supervisor, Dale, who found a seat for me. Needing other people isn't a sign of weakness, it never was and it never will be. It is, and always will be, the precious gift of service that human beings give to each other. He uses circumstances to develop our character. In fact, he depends more on circumstances to make us like Jesus than he depends on our reading the Bible. The reason is obvious: You face circumstances twenty-four hours a day. Jesus warned us that we would have problems in the world.' No one is immune to pain or insulated from suffering, and no one gets to skate through life problem-free. Life is a series of problems. Every time you solve one, another is waiting to take its place. Not all of them are big, but all are significant in God's growth process for you. Peter assures us that problems are normal, saying, "Don't be bewildered or surprised when you go through the fiery trials ahead, for this is no strange, unusual thing that is going to happen to you." God uses problems to draw you closer to himself. The Bible says, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those who are crushed in spirit." Your most profound and intimate experiences of worship will likely be in your darkest days-when your heart is broken, when you feel abandoned, when you're out of options, when the pain is great-and you turn to God alone. It is during suffering that we learn to pray our most authentic, heartfelt, honest-to-God prayers. When we're in pain, we don't have the energy for superficial prayers. Joni Eareckson Tada notes, "When life is rosy, we may slide by with knowing about Jesus, with imitating him and quoting him and speaking of him. But only in suffering will we know Jesus." We learn things about God in suffering that we can't learn any other way. God could have kept Joseph out of jail, kept Daniel out of the lion's den, kept Jeremiah from being tossed into a slimy pit, kept Paul from being shipwrecked three times, and kept the three Hebrew young men from being thrown into the blazing furnace-but he didn't. He let those problems happen, and every one of those persons was drawn closer to God as a result. Problems force us to look to God and depend on him instead of ourselves. Paul testified to this benefit: "We felt we were doomed to die and saw how powerless we were to help ourselves; but that was good, for then we put everything into the hands of God, who alone could save us." You'll never know that God is all you need until God is all you've got. Regardless of the cause, none of your problems could happen without God's permission. Everything that happens to a child of God is Father filtered, and he intends to use it for good even when Satan and others mean it for bad. Because God is sovereignly in control, accidents are just incidents in God's good plan for you. Because every day of your life was written on God's calendar before you were born, everything that happens to you has spiritual significance. Everything! Romans 8:28-29 explains why: "We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son." This is one of the most misquoted and misunderstood passages in the Bible. It doesn't say, "God causes everything to work out the way I want it to." Obviously that's not true. It also doesn't say, "God causes everything to work out to have a happy ending on earth." That is not true either. There are many unhappy endings on earth. We live in a fallen world. Only in heaven is everything done perfectly the way God intends. That is why we are told to pray, "Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." To fully understand Romans 8:28-29 you must consider it phrase by phrase. "We know": Our hope in difficult times is not based on positive thinking, wishful thinking, or natural optimism. It is a certainty based on the truths that God is in complete control of our universe and that he loves us. "that God causes": There's a Grand Designer behind everything. Your life is not a result of random chance, fate, or luck. There is a master plan. History is His story. God is pulling the strings. We make mistakes, but God never does. God cannot make a mistake-because he is God. "everything": God's plan for your life involves all that happens to you-including your mistakes, your sins, and your hurts. It includes illness, debt, disasters, divorce, and death of loved ones. God can bring good out of the worst evil. He did at Calvary. Everything that happens to you has spiritual significance. "to work together": Not separately or independently. The events in your life work together in God's plan. They are not isolated acts, but interdependent parts of the process to make you like Christ. To bake a cake you must use flour, salt, raw eggs, sugar, and oil. Eaten individually, each is pretty distasteful or even bitter. But bake them together and they become delicious. If you will give God all your distasteful, unpleasant experiences, he will blend them together for good. "for the good": This does not say that everything in life is good. Much of what happens in our world is evil and bad, but God specializes in bringing good out of it. In the official family tree of Jesus Christ, four women are listed: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba. Tamar seduced her father-in-law to get pregnant. Rahab was a prostitute. Ruth was not even Jewish and broke the law by marrying a Jewish man. Bathsheba committed adultery with David, which resulted in her husband's murder. These were not exactly sterling reputations, but God brought good out of bad, and Jesus came through their lineage. God's purpose is greater than our problems, our pain, and even our sin. "of those who love God and are called": This promise is only for God's children. It is not for everyone. All things work for bad for those living in opposition to God and insist on having their own way. "according to his purpose": What is that purpose? It is that we "become like his Son." Everything God allows to happen in your life is permitted for that purpose! Your most profound and intimate experiences of worship will likely be in your darkest days. "For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." 2 Corinthians 4:17 (NIV) We are like jewels, shaped with the hammer and chisel of adversity. If a jeweler's hammer isn't strong enough to chip off our rough edges, God will use a sledgehammer. If we're really stubborn, he uses a jackhammer. He will use whatever it takes. Every problem is a character-building opportunity, and the more difficult it is, the greater the potential for building spiritual muscle and moral fiber. Paul said, "We know that these troubles produce patience. And patience produces character." What happens outwardly in your life is not as important as what happens inside you. Your circumstances are temporary, but your character will last forever. The Bible often compares trials to a metal refiner's fire that burns away the impurities. Peter said, "These troubles come to prove that your faith is pure. This purity of faith is worth more than gold." A silversmith was asked, "How do you know when the silver is pure?" He replied, "When I see my reflection in it." When you've been refined by trials, people can see Jesus' reflection in you. James said, "Under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors." Since God intends you to be like Jesus, he will let you experience the same experiences Jesus went through. That includes loneliness, temptation, stress, criticism, rejection, and many other problems. The Bible says Jesus "learned obedience through suffering" and "was made perfect through suffering." Why would God exempt us from what he allowed his own Son to experience? Paul said, "We go through exactly what Christ goes through. If we go through the hard times with him, then we're certainly going to go through the good times with him!" Problems don't automatically produce what God intends. Many people become bitter, rather than better, and never grow up. You have to respond the way Jesus would. Remember that God's plan is good. God knows what is best for you and has your best interests at heart. God told Jeremiah, "The plans I have for you are plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Joseph understood this truth when he told his brothers who had sold him into slavery, "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good." Hezekiah echoed the same sentiment about his life-threatening illness: "It was for my own good that I had such hard times. Whenever God says no to your request for relief, remember, "God is doing what is best for us, training us to live God's holy best.' What happens outwardly in your life is not as important as what happens inside you. It is vital that you stay focused on God's plan, not your pain or problem. That is how Jesus endured the pain of the cross, and we are urged to follow his example: "Keep your eyes on Jesus, our leader and instructor. He was willing to die a shameful death on the cross because of the joy he knew would be his afterwards." Corrie ten Boom, who suffered in a Nazi death camp, explained the power of focus: "If you look at the world, you'll be distressed. If you look within, you'll be depressed. But if you look at Christ, you'll be at rest!" Your focus will determine your feelings. The secret of endurance is to remember that your pain is temporary but your reward will be eternal. Moses endured a life of problems "because he was looking ahead to his reward." Paul endured hardship the same way. He said, "Our present troubles are quite small and won't last very long. Yet they produce for us an immeasurably great glory that will last forever!" Don't give in to short-term thinking. Stay focused on the end result: "If we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering. What we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will give us later." Rejoice and give thanks. The Bible tells us to `give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. " How is this possible? Notice that God tells us to give thanks "in all circumstances" not "for all circumstances." God doesn't expect you to be thankful for evil, for sin, for suffering, or for their painful consequences in the world. Instead, God wants you to thank him that he will use your problems to fulfill his purposes. The Bible says, "Rejoice in the Lord always." It doesn't say, "Rejoice over your pain." That's masochism. You rejoice "in the Lord." No matter what's happening, you can rejoice in God's love, care, wisdom, power, and faithfulness. Jesus said, `Be full of joy at that time, because you have a great reward waiting for you in heaven." We can also rejoice in knowing that God is going through the pain with us. We do not serve a distant and detached God who spouts encouraging cliches safely from the sideline. Instead, he enters into our suffering. Jesus did it in the Incarnation, and his Spirit does it in us now. God will never leave us on our own. Refuse to give up. Be patient and persistent. The Bible says, "Let the process go on until your endurance is fully developed, and you will find that you have become men of mature character ... with no weak spots." Character building is a slow process. Whenever we try to avoid or escape the difficulties in life, we short-circuit the process, delay our growth, and actually end up with a worse kind of pain-the worthless type that accompanies denial and avoidance. When you grasp the eternal consequences of your character development, you'll pray fewer "Comfort me' prayers ("Help me feel good") and more "Conform me" prayers ("Use this to make me more like you"). You know you are maturing when you begin to see the hand of God in the random, baffling, and seemingly pointless circumstances of life. If you are facing trouble right now, don't ask, "Why me?" Instead ask, "What do you want me to learn?" Then trust God and keep on doing what's right. "You need to stick it out, staying with God's plan so you'll be there for the promised completion." Don't give up-grow up! -<>- _ _.-'`-._ _ ;.'________'.; _________n.[____________].n_________ |""_""_""_""||==||==||==||""_""_""_""] |"""""""""""||..||..||..||"""""""""""| |LI LI LI LI||LI||LI||LI||LI LI LI LI| |.. .. .. ..||..||..||..||.. .. .. ..| |LI LI LI LI||LI||LI||LI||LI LI LI LI| ,,;;,;;;,;;;,;;;,;;;,;;;,;;;,;;,;;;,;;;,;;,, ;;jgs;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; >A Note From Chris: I've written this before, but irrespective of elections, I believe the real renewal for any country will only come when believers in Jesus Christ acknowledge and repent of the sin and worldliness we've allowed in our own lives and seek to live holy (set apart) lives unto the Lord. Our holiness will lead to a "bright light witness" - where we love others and stand for truth - that in time will bring significant changes to the greater society at large. Basically, it comes down to the slumbering church needing to wake up and act like the church. Thankfully many have awakened in the last few years. But there's still some snoozing going on... Today marks an opportunity for believers to effect societal change - to put our faith in action - through the election process, which I have clearly recommended those of us in the U.S. take advantage of. At the same time, may we all humble ourselves today, confess & repent of our own failures - our sins, and also the sins of the Body of Christ as a whole. Then ask for God to heal our land. I know this verse is the "oft-quoted" verse...But it can be easy to read and not really take in: 2 Chronicles 7:14 "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." It's us believers doing the humbling, praying, seeking God's face, turning from our wicked ways....And THEN God does the forgiving of our sin and the healing of our land. It is my prayer that much healing will be effected/started today through God doing incredible things in our elections as we believers humble ourselves, pray & seek God's face, and turn from our wicked ways. -Chris SUBSCRIBE INFO Want to receive a Christian inspirational item AND great clean humor in an email to you each day of the week? It was sad when they wanted same s%x marital rights: It was sadder when you wouldn't sign the petitions against it or put up a fight. You hide in your four corners behind your church walls. If you want your light to shine you've got to come out and stand tall. Separation between church and state is not how it should be. It is in God we put our trust I will not let them fool me. On this Godly foundation is how we were formed So don't be afraid to blow your trumpets and sound your horns. It is vital to vote so that you too may have a voice But if you're a deadbeat you don't have a choice. Do you think that our God will not hold us accountable for this? Think again because this is not true it is only your wish. When you stand before the Lord and he ask what was your contribution It has been man's job to set things in order every since the creation. What you need is balance both natural and spiritual. Don't get hung up on things that are one sided and make it a ritual. "Get up and get involved," says God, don't keep me in this box tied up with rope. If I am not allowed to move thru you then the world has no hope. You could be President, Supreme Court Judge, Governor or Mayor. Just think, with me in office there would be none other that could compare. IT IS IN YOU, I PUT IT THERE WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? I'll be there to lead you and guide you: I myself will open the door. Don't fear anything that man can say or do to you It is me they are up against: they just don't have a clue. Before the foundation of the earth you were predestined to win. Don't abort your destiny and purpose because of omission and sin. My people are living below my plans and they can't with others share.
