There are many benefits to being an early riser, not the least of which is enjoying magnificent sunrises. This morning, however, I witnessed another of Mother Nature's spectacular shows --a moonset. Whenever the moon is full, I have trouble sleeping anyway, so often when I awaken in the middle of those nights, I'll go outside just to bask in moonlight. It is so much softer and feels gentler than sunlight, making everything appear more attractive, like the filming techniques used for aging movie stars years ago. I'd read that Mars would be making an appearance, so when I awakened a little after five, I went out on the deck to see what I could see. And there was the big old moon, hanging right in front of me. Off to the left, and much higher in the sky, I saw one bright star -- could that be Mars? It didn't look any different from a normal star, so later today I'll have to check on the location of Mars. (My astronomical skills obviously need work.) I live on Hilton Head Island, a major destination for visitors from around the world. This week begins a slowing down in tourist visits, as children head back to school. The island settles into a more normal phase, and residents breathe a sigh of relief at finding a parking space closer to the grocery store. Our villa is situated in a perfect location -- a short walk takes me to a lovely little shopping area that holds a Post Office, several shops and restaurants, and my hairdresser. A short bike ride in the opposite direction takes me to work; on the way, I pass a few lagoons and a tidal creek, where I always check for alligators or various coastal birds. It's a slow, peaceful life that I love with a surprisingly deep passion. You see, I'm a city girl. I was born and raised in Philadelphia. I loved the energy and yes, even the noise that comes with city living. I never imagined that I would fall in love with the natural beauty of a small barrier island in South Carolina, of all places! But fall in love is exactly what I did -- hard. And forever. I cannot imagine living anywhere else. My life here is soothing, and feeds my creativity because to be inspired, all I need do is walk out the door. Our deck overlooks a lagoon, and the fountain in the middle made soothing sounds as I sipped my coffee and watched the moon slipping down the sky. Once they begin their descent, I'm always surprised by how fast the sun or moon set. Before it disappeared behind the tall live oaks across the lagoon, the moon played hide and seek behind some clouds. The clouds were barely visible, blending into the sky which was turning a sharper blue as it lightened into day. Wisps would pass across the moon's face, making it a momentary spooky with a Halloween look. But soon the moon would reappear, so full and looking close enough to grasp in the palm of my hand. All too soon, the clouds grew thicker, the moon descended below the treetops, and my lunar encounter was at an end. I lingered over my lukewarm coffee, reluctant to go inside and begin the mundane routine with which we all prepare for work. But this day would be different -- it began with wonderment. Who could ask for a better beginning for the blessing of another day in paradise? -- Bobbi Hahn __________________________________________________ Bobbi lives in that cozy villa beside a lagoon with her husband and two elderly cats. Have you been spiritually "out of breath" lately? Meditate on this poem by Owen L.Crain: Slow me down, Lord; Ease the pounding of my heart by the quieting of my mind. Steady my hurried pace with a vision of the eternal reach of time. Give me amid the confusion of the day the calmness of the everlasting hills. Break the tensions of my nerves and muscles with the soothing music of the singing streams that live in my memory. Teach me the art of taking minute vacations, of slowing down to look at a flower, to chat with a friend, to smile at a child, to read a few lines from a good book. Slow me down, Lord, And inspire me to send my roots deep into the soil of life's enduring values, that I may grow toward my greater destiny. Remind me each day that the race is not always to the swift, that there is more to life than increasing its speed. Let me look upward to the towering oak and know that it grew great and strong because it grew slowly and well. As you think about this poem, read Psalm 46 (NIV): "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come and see the works of the LORD, the desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the shields with fire. 'Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.' The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress." --- ...Such a calming reminder that God is for us! Everyday they want to stir up some nonsense about what horrible thing President Trump did or said. They bombard us with their endless fabrications, lies and innuendos about their extreme view of what President Trump meant by what he said or didn't say or did or didn't do. It's like the grand finale at the 4th of July fireworks event where they are throwing everything out and hoping someone will take notice and give them some clicks or shares. Because that is what they crave. More clicks and shares equals more money. As we all know, it is all about money. They don't care if it hurts our country or our people or even their own reputation. The bottom line is money and of course their extreme left ideology and viewpoints. No longer do our news media try to give us the straight news. Instead they taint and slant it to fit their views and to gain more social media clicks and shares. The internet has them blinded to the lure of big bucks for the most crazy information they can throw out there that with cause people to swallow it hook line and sinker and go viral with it. So that is what we are left with. A left news media bent on shaping our minds and hearts into their way of thinking so they can control us and make us do what they want us to do. They don't want to give us the truth and let us make up our own minds. They want the news tainted with their ideology and views. If they played fair and shared that they were giving us their commentary and views instead of trying to make us believe their twisted view of the truth is the actual straight news of the day, then it wouldn't be a problem. We could still decide for ourselves if we will side with them or not. But the way they report it, they want to indoctrinate us with their own beliefs and are only impersonating a real straight forward news media outlet. Our President doesn't stand for having the wool pulled over our eyes by them and calls them out for what they are. Fake News. We cannot depend on them telling us the truth. We know Trump has our back. So far he is on our side. We depend on him to do the best he can for us. Trump lets us know his strength and trust is in God Almighty and advises us to keep God, country and family first. In times when the left news media is bombarding us with all their distractions and lies, and the world is in an uproar, it is good to know that God is always for us and shall never let us down! Jesus Christ is our calm anchor in this sea of turmoil. We lean on Him and with God our Father, we know all shall work out for good. , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' Rom.8: [28] And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. =========================================================== >-->From Archives InspiredBuffalo: , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' James 1:2-3 "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance." (James 1:2-3) Do you ever wonder why, when you are feeling like you have had enough and don't know how you will continue to cope any longer, God sends something new for you to get through that may be even harder to bear. After 15 years of coming to terms with the physical limitations of my body, I found that I had a new type of pain and something that was more acutely serious than my original problem. It meant many doctors visits, scans and trips to hospital for treatment or rehabilitation. My focus changed because this current problem could not just be lived with as it was, it has to be treated and fixed. I've often thought that God sends us trials to wake us up, to show us our need of Him, or to put the needs and situations of others around us in better perspective. When God sends something else as well, I wonder if He is wanting to reinforce those messages, or to teach me something new. I don't know the answer, but at that time I found the following things to be true for me. God reinforced to me that He is with me in every situation, He showed me His promises and gave me new ones as well. He sent me friends and family to encourage me, to take me to appointments and care for me when I could not look after myself. He provided me with everything I "needed". I didn't know what the future held for me then, especially in terms of my job security after I had an operation, but I did know that God is always in control. Maybe even though I thought I had learned these lessons over that first 10-15 years, I needed a wake-up call to remind me who really is in control of my life and its possible God will need to remind me again, if I lose sight of that, and become overwhelmed by the worries of everyday. God is always bigger than my problems! ABOUT THE AUTHOR Fiona Burrows lives in Melbourne Australia. All through the day I had no time To speak a word of cheer, No time to speak of Christ to friends They'd laugh at me, I feared. No time, no time, too much to do -- That was my constant cry; No time to give to those in need -- At last 'twas time to die. Everyone passed by her and never stopped to see why she looked so sad. Dressed in a worn pink dress, barefoot and dirty, the girl just sat And watched the people go by. She never tried to speak. She never said a word. Many people passed by her, but no one would stop. The next day I decided to go back to the park in curiosity to see if the little girl would still be there. Yes, she was there, right in the very spot where she was yesterday, and still with the same sad look in her eyes Today I was to make my own move and walk over to the little girl. For as we all know, a park full of strange people is not a place for young children to play alone. As I got closer I could see the back of the little girl's dress. It was grotesquely shaped. I figured that was the reason people just passed by and made no Effort to speak to her. Deformities are a low blow to our society and, heaven forbid if you make a step toward assisting someone who is different. As I got closer, the little girl lowered her eyes slightly to avoid my intent stare. As I approached her, I could see the shape of her back more clearly. She was grotesquely shaped in a humped over form. I smiled to let her know it was OK; I was there to help, to talk. I sat down beside her and opened with a simple, 'Hello' The little girl acted shocked, and stammered a 'hi '; after a long stare into my eyes. I smiled and she shyly smiled back. We talked until darkness fell and the park was completely empty. I asked the girl why she was so sad. The little girl looked at me with a sad face said, 'Because, I'm different.' I immediately said, 'That you are!'; and smiled. The little girl acted even sadder and said, 'I know.' 'Little girl,' I said, 'you remind me of an angel, sweet and innocent.' She looked at me and smiled, and then slowly she got to her feet and Said, 'Really?' 'Yes, you're like a little Guardian Angel sent to watch over all the people walking by.' She nodded her head yes, and smiled. With that she opened the back of her pink dress and allowed her wings to spread, and then she said 'I am.' 'I'm your Guardian Angel,' with a twinkle in her eye. I was speechless -- sure I was seeing things. She said, 'For once you thought of someone other than yourself. My job here is done'. I got to my feet and said, 'Wait, why did no one stop to help an Angel?' She looked at me, smiled, and said, 'You're the only one that could see me,' and then she was gone. And with that, my life was changed dramatically. So, when you think you're all you have, remember, your angel is always watching over you Pass this to everyone that means anything at all to you. Make sure you send it back to the person who sent it to you, to Let them know you're glad they care about you. Like the story says, we all need someone... And, every one of your friends is an Angel in their own way. The value of a friend is measured in the heart. -<>- _ ///-._ ////////-._ /////////////-. ////////////////`. //////////////// .'`. //////////////// . '.'`. '|`'//////////// . .'.::|` : `'/////// . Every winter there were reports that some of these people, condemned to sleep out in the open, had frozen to death, and so the church made the warmth and safety of its building available without charge. Each evening during the winter, volunteers from the church would spend the night in the shelter, providing food, clothing, and lodging for as many of the homeless as the building would hold. Almost without exception, the volunteers reported that the experience of spending the night with these people from the streets had been far more than an act of dutiful charity. The volunteers had found their own faith strengthened, their own reliance upon the grace of Christ reinforced by the experience. Several months after the shelter was opened, one of the pastors of the church was being interviewed on a radio talk program. The interviewer was an opinionated fundamentalist whose biases were quite strong. It became clear during the interview that he felt that the church ought to stick to the business of preaching the old-time gospel and stay away from meddlesome activities like shelters for homeless people. "Now just tell me," he jeered at one point, "where is Jesus in all this?" For a moment the pastor considered silently how to respond, then said calmly, "You just have to be there." "Come and see," said Philip to Nathaniel, and some people do not see because they will not come to those places where one can get an angle of vision, where one can see the grace of Christ at work in the world. Ever wonder what it meant? no one ever explained that to me, Does lifetime refer to the life of myself, or does it refer to the life time of the company that built it? Or does it refer to the life of the product itself? One thing I have learned tho, is that I only found 2 items in this world that were actually guaranteed for a life time. One was Cutco cutlerly. Early in marriage, I bought a set of these for the war department. Man, them knives are indestructible, and the company, completely reliable. I remember only one breaking, that was when we were shingling the roof of the living room. Couldn't find my utility knife and so I was slicing the shingles using the "petite chef's knife." Fortunately, the company saved my bacon when I broke the tip off and they sent me another one without question. (men, never use your wife's kitchen knives to cut shingles, bad idea.) The other item that will last a life time is zippo lighters. Remember those bright shiny things, fellas? I found out what they were quite by accident one day when I was in the back yard, digging a sand box for the kids. Turned one up buried with the dirt. All rusted, lid broke off. Sent it in to the company. Lo and behold, they sent me a brand new one, no questions asked. Still have the silly thing. Well, the funny thing about it, there is no guarantees on life. Its gonna happen, and whatever the cards may be, your gonna get yours, one way or another. But here is some advice, life don't give you no guarantees, live it to the fullest. --- ...So true! Thanks Geniann! God is THE ONLY one I know of that can give such a guarantee. God gives us a life time guarantee... Rom.10: [9] That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. No matter who. And no matter when - for this is a guarantee that is available for our entire life. So it is a real honest to goodness 'life time guarantee' from God Almighty who shall never go out of business! Now that is one guarantee you can't go wrong with! ================================================================ | --====|====-- | .-"""""-. .'_________'. /_/_|__|__|_\_\ ;'-._ _.-'; ,--------------------| `-. .-' |--------------------, ``""--..__ ___ ; ' ; ___ __..--""`` jgs `"-// \\.._\ /_..// \\-"` \\_// '._ _.' \\_// `"` ``---`` `"` >Unexpected Return Story Editor: by Angel Torres Joyce Schowalter Florida, USA In December 2005 I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. I was a Marine being deployed for seven months to Iraq, given leave to come home before going to the desert. It's an 18-hour flight from Okinawa to the U.S. I had to catch a different flight in Houston, Texas to Miami, my destination. There was a delay in Houston, so with a couple spare hours, I decided to grab something to eat. After eating, I stopped at the USO (United Service Organization) to see if there were any Service members heading my direction. I hoped to find someone to chat with during the flight, especially if they were a Marine, or had been in combat. After about an hour at the USO I headed toward my gate. When I got there I sat down in the waiting area, and decided to call my dad about picking me up in Miami. Then I realized my cell phone was missing. I looked everywhere, including the bathroom, restaurant and the USO. Having no luck, I used the payphone. I called my dad and asked him to cancel my account because I'd lost my phone. We share an account because he and my family want to be able to talk to me anytime. My dad asked that I not worry, we'd just get a new phone once I got home. After our conversation, I made my way on board the aircraft with disappointment -- I'd lost all my friends' phone numbers, which wouldn't be easy to get back. The flight was about to close its doors so I walked to the rear of the aircraft to get seated. Two gentlemen were already seated in the same aisle, so I stowed my belongings and sat down. Not even a minute later a flight attendant walked up and asked if my name was Angel. I looked at her, and asked Why? She asked if I'd lost my phone and was the phone she held mine? I looked at her, looked at the phone and just couldn't believe it. I mean, I am in Houston International Airport that houses many different airlines, serving tens of thousands of customers daily. When you lose something like a phone at a place like that, it's bound to be gone forever. She said a gentleman picked up my phone and saw a Marine logo on it, then scrolled down to my dad's number. He called my dad, got my name and flight number, then took time off of his busy travel schedule and proceeded to the gate. He gave my phone to the flight attendant to return to me. That phone was my only way of getting hold of everyone I care about, to be able to see them before leaving to combat, which at the time I thought was the last time. That stranger did me a huge favor that day in Texas, and I am very thankful, even to this day. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Laugh & Lift: "Thoughtfulness is the beginning of great sanctity. If you learn this art of being thoughtful, you will become more and more Christ- like, for his heart was meek and he always thought of others. The root stays deep in the ground, threatening to grow and blossom again. But despite their bad reputation, dandelions are pretty little flowers with their yellow strands all tucked neatly into the center. And truly they are the most beautiful of all flowers when presented clutched in a child's dirty little hand. No one gets yelled at for picking them. Perhaps they grow only to be used and enjoyed by children. Dandelions are ignored or attacked, never nurtured or cared for, and yet they always bloom profusely. They demand no pampering or special attention to yield their bright blossoms; they pop up in fields, in lawns, and between cracks in the sidewalk, even in the best neighborhoods. Can you imagine trying to grow them in a garden? They'd sneak through the boundaries and pop their sunny yellow faces up in the surrounding lawn. They would never stay put. Christians should be more like dandelions. Our sunny yellow faces should be a reminder that simple faith has deep roots that are impossible to dislodge. Our vast number would show the world that even though we are not fancy or pampered, we are evident everywhere, even in the best neighborhoods. We should be as easily accessible as a dandelion. Jesus is. We need to get out of our gardens and jump across the boundaries that keep us where people expect to find us. We need to show our sunny yellow faces in all the spots that need a little brightening - the crack in the sidewalk or the lawn of a country club. "Dear Lord, may the wind of Your Spirit scatter us to become effective for You wherever we are planted. In Jesus' Name, AMEN!" "But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. His mother told him she would take him to the store to choose a backpack/book bag to take to kindergarten. Instead of sounding excited about that, he wistfully said, "What I really want is one of those little machines that makes beeping, buzzing noises." His mother was perplexed until Max pointed out his mother's alarm clock on the table beside her bed. Alex, 13, was helping his mother do some chores. Sandi had made a list of things to be done, and designated which ones he would do and which she would complete. Alex noted one item he did not wish to do, so he tried negotiating with Sandi to trade some tasks. He saw that sweeping and mopping the tile was on Sandi's list, so he offered to do the sweeping part and Sandi would only have to mop. Sandi does not like mopping, so she suggested, "How about the other way around?" meaning she would sweep and he would mop. Alex paused for a moment, and with a puzzled tone of voice repeated back, "You're going to mop first and then I'll sweep? That doesn't make any sense, Mom." -- Sandi Gosnell of Tallahassee, Florida Nolan, 3, has a 4-month-old sister. This story was told at a Texas camp meeting by the Rev. Scott Graham: "I am very privileged to have my wife and daughter with me. My daughter helps keep me grounded -- sometimes she gets grounded! You know the Bible kinda cautions us about thinking of yourself more highly than you ought. That's what kids are for! When she was in kindergarten, on Easter Sunday morning ... I came out of the pastor's office to head down to behind the platform to where all the platform participants were going to be gathering... My darling little girl was all frou-froued up for Easter. She had the curls and the frilly dress and the whole thing, you know? So I just stopped and made over her a little bit and she said to me (she had started kindergarten and all, you know), she said, "Daddy, I can spell your first name!' I said, "Well, that's wonderful, Sweetheart, let me hear you do that!' She got it! S-C-O-T-T. I said, "Awww Sweetheart that's so good!' She said, "Well, it's on the screen up there.' I looked and it was just like that. And I said, "Ah, you cheated!' She said, "Awh, Daddy! I've seen your name LOTS of places!' I felt pretty good about that! I was thinkin' Youth Congress flyers, General Conference programs, Camp Meeting slots! And I asked, "Darlin', where have you seen Daddy's name?' She said, "TOILET PAPER HOLDERS!' There you have it! To everyone else I might have been this high flutin' youth official, but to her, I'm just paper products, that's all!
