The world could be immersed in political scandals, wars, and other newsworthy events, but nothing stimulates conversation better than hair. Women never seem to be content with the hair they were born with. Just as grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, hair is always more alluring on someone else's head. If her hair is straight, she wants it curly. If it's brown, she wants it blonde. Hair too short? Hair extensions. Hair too long? She wears a wig. Women's hair styling tools and accessories should be labeled as lethal weapons or torture devices, as they resemble chopsticks, clamps, and multi-toothed amphibians. Others have foreign names like "scrunchy" and "banana clip." All these adornments are imperative for preventing bad hair days. Women crimp and primp, perm and squirm, dry and dye. They curl, tease, highlight, streak, and straighten, then apply gel, mousse, and hair spray. They have brushes that are round, wire, or heated, and even ones that emit steam. If all else fails, then out comes the Velcro, sponge, or plastic rollers. Their curling irons with various size barrels do everything but spit nickels. Only a woman knows what a kiss curl, pin curl, or spiral perm is, and what the terms feathering and layering mean. I have fallen prey to all the pitfalls that come with having a full head of hair. If long hair is considered a woman's glory, then mine was singing hallelujah. I never had a perm until my twenties, and then ended up looking like a backup singer for the Jackson Five. My hair also took a beating from the chemicals, leaving my hairline red and sore. Lest you think that hair- raising experience stopped me from getting future perms, let me assure you I thought nothing of suffering for vanity. I literally let my hair down and had it cut so short, that a little florescent orange hair gel would have made me fit right in with the punk era. In later years, a few grey hairs dared make an appearance, so I thought nothing of spending the equivalent of a week's grocery money to have the offending hairs masked. After a while, I rationalized that I could save oodles of money doing it myself. How difficult could it be? All you do is put the dye on your head and wait while it works its magic. Sounded like splitting hairs to me. I chose a product with a reputable name, and carefully followed the instructions. The cheap plastic gloves promptly developed a hole, and the leaking dye stained my skin. After a very long time, my mission was accomplished. The hair results were passable but the bathroom was another story. Dye had somehow splattered all over the walls, peeling the paint off. It made me wonder what the stuff did to my hair. Repainting the entire wall made this whole experience a little more expensive than I had anticipated. The next time I touched up my roots, I noticed unusual dark stains on my bedroom carpet. Puzzled, I followed the trail of brown blotches to the tiled floor of the bathroom. I had unknowingly dripped the dye, colorless at first, on the floor and then stepped into it, tracking it wherever I walked. After that fiasco, I figured I was clearly coloristically challenged and decided to leave the coloring to a professional. The other day I found myself wondering if blondes really do have more fun. [At the same time], we also must not engage in sinful activity with them and we must guard our own hearts and minds so that we will not fall ourselves. One Saturday night, Tom [a friend] wanted to go and watch a movie. I did too, but I wanted to see something that he felt that we had no business seeing. The College handbook stated that students were not to view R-rated movies. I thought the movie would be funny. He felt that it could cause the whole group to stumble by watching it. Tom never refused to be a friend. He did refuse to join me in sin or to sit idly by and watch me destroy my mind with sin. Some of you are probably saying, "Hold on buddy, big deal, you wanted to watch a questionable movie." Tom knew a basic fact that I have since learned. Just as a blazing fire begins with a small spark, sin begins with a simple thought. As one professor often said, "sin always takes you further than you ever wanted to go, keeps you longer than you wanted to stay, and costs you more than you could ever afford to pay." I encourage each of you to show Christ's love to everyone. Love those who are in sin enough to demonstrate what authentic Christianity is with your life. I am one that am not so much worried about an R-rated movie - a lot of times the movie writers will write in a couple scenes just to get the rating that most people seem to want. So I feel it is generally an easy thing for me to sensor them out if I want to. I won't watch an X-rated one as it usually disgusts me. If they see you doing something, they tend to want to copy you or tell Dad why should I do such and such if big brother/sister doesn't do it? kind of thing. Or worse yet, if you are trying to lead someone new to Christ and they think something is evil and they see you do it and thus turn away from the Gospel - then you got a real problem! You not only hurt them but you hurt God the one you love so much as you have disappointed Him and done what He told you you shouldn't do in His Word. That means you have broken fellowship with God and need to ask forgiveness for it in the name of Jesus Christ so your bond of Love with God and Christ can be made whole again. Remember, God never leaves us. We through our own actions leave Him. 1 John 1: [5] This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. What began as simple fatigue and a slight limp became over the years a wheelchair, long visits to the doctor and surgeries to help spasticity and bladder problems. Thank you for traveling this unpredictable road with me and loving me despite the tremendous costs. Our children and our friends look at you and see a living, breathing, unselfish, giving, child of God. Many times, I have cried when I hear the song "You are the Wind Beneath My Wings" because it describes what you are to me. I have been blessed in so many ways and the greatest blessing is you. "Caregiver" is a word that was foreign to me when I was young. Growing up and being independent was my goal. I flourished in school and in athletics. I was captain of my high school tennis team, third in my class, and had hopes of a career in physical therapy. Then, in college, I met you in Greek class, of all places. We began dating and learning about each other and before long we made our vows in a lovely garden wedding with birds singing as the sun set by the lake. We shared days of playing golf together, tennis, even basketball at night with car lights illuminating the court. When our first child was born, we loved being parents. When I awoke with double vision just months after our wedding, I called my brother-in-law who is an internist. He suggested a neurologist and I awkwardly began dialing. We were young, naive newlyweds, hearing the words "demyelinating disease" for the first time. It wasn't until my brother-in-law, who had talked to the doctor, told us that it was probably multiple sclerosis, did I really understand. I was stunned, not believing what I heard. I had only known one guy with MS who lived in a nursing home, hardly able to speak, not able to walk, with little hope to go on. So my first reaction was to move back home with my mom, send you back home to yours, and forget we ever got married. Solidly grounded in God's word and in your commitment to our marriage, you said we would pray, forge ahead, and make it. Now that I've had MS for twenty-one years, my admiration for you has grown more than words can express. My daily needs are now your daily activities: stretching my legs, putting on my socks and clothes, lifting me into my electric wheelchair, getting my meds, serving my breakfast, and taking the kids to school. You do these without complaint, without hesitation, and with consistent dedication. At night, the routine begins again, only backwards. Then after putting on my nighttime ankle brace, you get me into bed. During the night, you awaken to my whisper and tend to my needs. When it comes to prayer, it is true that God does want us to make our requests known to him, but sometimes I feel my prayers are more, "Give me ... give me ... give me!" I know God is gracious and does hear and answer my prayers, but how much better it would be to come to him not only in times of trouble and need, but to daily come to him with, "Dear God, I'm just calling in for a visit. What can I do for you today?" Suggested prayer: "Dear God, thank you that you do want me to bring my requests to you, but please help me to think of others' needs when I pray, and especially bring praise and thanksgiving to you. Then, any time you felt yourself being drawn into negative, destructive thinking, you could immediately put your focus on that day's object of appreciation and gratitude. Genuine, heartfelt gratitude can have a powerful positive influence on every aspect of your life. It can be an effective counterbalance to all the negativity the world throws your way. Think right now of something for which you can be truly grateful. The doctor had a private practice and his office was nearby. Best of all, he favored "preventive and natural medicine", important to me as I seem to be allergic to half the substances known to mankind. Foods, chemicals, dyes, you name it, I'm allergic. I appreciated he was a small business owner, being one myself. I didn't have insurance, because one month of insurance cost more than I usually spent in three years at the doctor. (Even 25 years ago, policies for one person were extremely expensive.) So I went to see Doctor Tim. He was a great guy, very helpful, very respectful. Afterwards, the gal at the front desk printed out a bill for $80. As I was writing my check, Doctor Tim came up, took the bill, drew a line across it, and wrote in "$60.00". I was floored. "Look, he said, "If we bill an insurance company, it takes an incredible amount of our time, energy and money. Insurance companies don't pay the full amount of the bill, and it takes a long time for us to be paid. People who pay in the moment deserve to pay less, it's still better for us." "Wow, thanks!" I replied. Years later, Doc Tim joined a big medical business in my metro area, in charge of one of their offices. At that big business, still uninsured, I had to pay full price. Then one day the front desk clerk said, "If you're paying today, self-insured, there's 20 percent off your bill." Amazing. Next time I told Doc Tim, "Great news on the 20 percent off!" He said, "Let me tell you a story about that. "I went to meetings for two years, saying that I thought our self-insured customers deserved this. People finally agreed. But the computer guys said they had to change the system to accommodate it. Next meeting, same conversation. "Finally, after two years, I sent a bill out front with the instructions, 'Take 20 percent off, patient is self-pay." The front desk did just that. Soon my phone lit up with the billing department, 'Why did you do this?' "I told them I did it because they'd been talking about it for years, plenty of time to get it done, and I was going to continue. Within *one month*, the 20 percent off was in the computers, system-wide, for all our locations." Needless to say, my jaw dropped. One person, one conviction to do what was right, thousands of patients paying a more "fair" rate, probably still more money than insurance companies paid. Imagine how many people, how many families that would help over the years. It's probably been 10 years. I still don't see the doctor often. But when I do, there's 20 percent off my bill.
