I usually refer to Valentine's Day as "amateur day." Simply because the stuff that most people do on that day, I do year round. But yesterday I ran into a professional. I had received a wonderful note regarding my story, Broken Heart, from my good friend Bill Hyatt. He wrote, "Bob, I know this was a mother and son but it reminded me so much of an elderly couple at the nursing home where my wife is. They are in their nineties and have been married 65 years. When he comes wheeling into the dining room or day room with her already there, her face lights up like the sun, moon and all the stars were inside her. His also lights up at her presence. I think it is absolutely wonderful that these two elderly lovers are still so much in love. Bill" As I headed into my day, I thought about creating a love story similar to that elderly couple. Caught up in the details of having a special dinner last night for my wife, I forgot about it. That is, until I stopped by the local florist to buy a small bunch of flowers. Standing at the counter I had asked the clerk for a bunch of mixed flowers, about $10 worth. It's a standard order there at least once a month. Marianne loves Daisies. But this is Valentine's Day. $10 won't buy you much even if you are one of the regulars. While I was waiting a young man about twentyish, walked in. Another clerk busily passing through said "Can I help you?" He asked "How much are roses per dozen." She replied, "$75." I choked. He smiled. The clerk excused herself. I turned to him and said, "Give her the money instead." The clerk returned and he quickly responded, "I'll take those in the show case." A huge vase filled with a dozen long stem flowers. $110. The woman asked if she could go home with him. I was still in shock. At that point my clerk walked out with this tiny bunch of flowers -- for $10. "Is this okay?" I whispered, "Yes." "Is this a Valentine's gift?" she asked. A thousand answers rushed through my head: "No, they're for a grave." "Oh, yes they're for my little daughter." But I quietly replied "yes." The young man and I were left there alone. It was awkwardly quiet. Finally I said, "Boy, she's going to love you!" "I had to keep up with last year," he replied. "What did you do last year?" "I bought her three dozen roses. This guy she was dating was going to ask her to marry him. He was a creep. He was no good for her. So I stole her away before he could ask her." He was a professional. I was in awe. As I stood there thinking about all this I realized that he was the beginning, I was in the middle and that lovely couple Bill told me about was at the end of love. It doesn't take a lot to be in love. It lies somewhere between $110, $10, and lighting up with a smile when they come in the room. -- Bob Perks ========================================================== >-->From Our Friend Jo Ann :) ...:::::::... ...:::::::... .:::::::::::::::::. .::::::::::::::::::. .::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::. .:::::::::::::::::::'.-=.-~, ':::::::::::::::::::. .:::::::::::::::::::' /{,_;--'},'::::::::::::::::::::. .:::::::::::::::::::: | .=~`|//| :::::::::::::::::::::. .::::::::::::::::::::: | / ; \ | :::' __, '::::::::::::. .:::::::::::::::::::::' || | | | :' .' \/\ ::::::::::::. .:::::::::::::::::::::: |\| | | |\ / \ /_| :::::::::::::. ::::::::::::::::::::::. \ | | /|'/ / | \ /_ | :::::::::::::: ::::::::::::::' ,_ '::: `\ \/|/ / /`.: \ /__/ ::::::::::::::: ::::::::::::: /\/`'. This is so beautiful! >John 3:16 A little boy was selling newspapers on the corner, the people were in and out of the cold. The little boy was so cold that he wasn't trying to sell many papers. He walked up to a policeman and said, 'Mister, you wouldn't happen to know where a poor boy could find a warm place to sleep tonight would you? You see, I sleep in a box up around the corner there and down the alley and it's awful cold in there for tonight. Sure would be nice to have a warm place to stay.' The policeman looked down at the little boy and said, 'You go down the street to that big white house and you knock on the door. When they come out the door you just say John 3:16, and they will let you in.' So he did. He walked up the steps and knocked on the door, and a lady answered. He looked up and said, 'John 3:16.' The lady said, 'Come on in, Son.' She took him in and she sat him down in a split bottom rocker in front of a great big old fireplace, and she went off.. The boy sat there for a while and thought to himself: John 3:16 ....I don't understand it, but it sure makes a cold boy warm. Later she came back and asked him 'Are you hungry? 'He said, 'Well, just a little. I haven't eaten in a couple of days, and I guess I could stand a little bit of food,' The lady took him in the kitchen and sat him down to a table full of wonderful food. He ate and ate until he couldn't eat anymore. Then he thought to himself: John 3:16 Boy, I sure don't understand it but it sure makes a hungry boy full. She took him upstairs to a bathroom to a huge bathtub filled with warm water, and he sat there and soaked for a while. As he soaked, he thought to himself: John 3:16 I sure don't understand it, but it sure makes a dirty boy clean... You know, I've not had a bath, a real bath, in my whole life. The only bath I ever had was when I stood in front of that big old fire hydrant as they flushed it out. The lady came in and got him. She took him to a room, tucked him into a big old feather bed, pulled the covers up around his neck, kissed him goodnight and turned out the lights. As he lay in the darkness and looked out the window at the snow coming down on that cold night, he thought to himself: John 3:16 .....I don't understand it but it sure makes a tired boy rested. The next morning the lady came back up and took him down again to that same big table full of food. After he ate, she took him back to that same big old split bottom rocker in front of the fireplace and picked up a big old Bible. She sat down in front of him and looked into his young face.. 'Do you understand John 3:16? ' she asked gently. He replied, 'No, Ma'am, I don't. The first time I ever heard it was last night when the policeman told me to use it,' She opened the Bible to John 3:16 and began to explain to him about Jesus . Right there, in front of that big old fireplace, he gave his heart and life to Jesus. He sat there and thought: John 3:16 I don't understand it, but it sure makes a lost boy feel safe. You know, I have to confess I don't understand it either, how God was willing to send His Son to die for me, and how Jesus would agree to do such a thing. I don't understand the agony of the Father and every angel in heaven as they watched Jesus suffer and die. I don't understand the intense love for ME that kept Jesus on the cross till the end. I don't understand it, but it sure does make life worth living. John 3:16 For Godso loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, thatwhosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.... --- ...So Hearftwarming! They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loved ones is, as C. S. Lewis once said, a "sweet duty." 2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers, doctors, and ministers. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers. 3. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for the president, leaders in business and industry, and administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God's guidance. 4. The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger; as any piano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them. 5. And lastly comes our little finger; the smallest finger of all, which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, "The least shall be the greatest among you," Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your own needs will be put into proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively. Should you find it hard to get to sleep tonight, just remember the homeless family who has no bed to lie in. -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment: Valentine Hear Animations http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/agifs_f-j.html Valentine Animations http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/agifs_u-z.html Monkey Shines! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/monkeyshines.html New Year Advice! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/newyear.html Real Fantasy Trees 2! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/trees2.html Extraordinary Photos! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/extraordinary.html Unusual Photos! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/unusual.html How True It Is! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/nyear.html Beautiful Bridges 2! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/bridges2.html Albino Hummingbird! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/ahummingbird.html Paper Art! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/paperart.html Journey Through Life! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/journey.html -<>- >From Our Friend LouiseA :) When this mystery lady walked into a Wisconsin music shop, everyone assumed she was shopping for her grandson! This act of personal surrender is called many things: consecration, making Jesus Lord, taking up your cross, dying to self, yielding to the Spirit. What matters is that you do it, not what you call it. God wants your life, all of it - 95 percent is not enough. Our total surrender to God is blocked by several things, including: * Our ignorance of God - not knowing what he's really like; * Our sinful nature - the desire to be God ourselves; and * Our misunderstanding of surrender and the trust that it requires. Can We Trust God? Trust is an essential ingredient to surrender. We won't surrender to God unless we trust him, but we can't trust him until we know him better. Fear keeps us from surrendering, but love casts out all fear. The more you realize how much God loves you, the easier surrender becomes. How do I know God loves me? He gives us many evidences: * God says he loves you (Psalm 145:9); * You're never out of his sight (Psalm 139:3); * He cares about every detail of your life (Matthew 10:30); * He gave you the capacity to enjoy all kinds of pleasure (1 Timothy 6:17b); * He has good plans for your life (Jeremiah 29:11); * He forgives you (Psalm 86:5); * He's patient with you (Psalm 145:8); * He sacrificed his Son for you (Romans 5:8). God loves you infinitely more than you can imagine. "Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship" (Romans 12:1 HCSB). If you want to know how much you matter to God, look at Christ with his arms outstretched on the cross saying, "I love you this much! I'd rather die than live without you." God is not a cruel slave driver or a bully who uses brute force to coerce us into submission. He doesn't try to break our will, but woos us to himself, so that we might offer it freely to him. God is a lover and a liberator, and surrendering brings freedom, not bondage. When we completely surrender ourselves to Jesus, we discover that he is not a tyrant but a savior; not a boss, but a brother; not a dictator, but a friend. He was unable work for about six months. Much of his income is from overtime and his disability pay did not equal even 25 percent of the income we count on. We have five children and this was a massive loss of income for our family. It became necessary for me to work a second full-time job. Most days I went to my teaching job at 7:00 a.m., went to my second job as a cashier at a local retail store at 4:00 p.m., and dragged myself home around midnight, knowing I had to do the same thing the next day. I still had to do lesson planning and somehow squeeze in family time. I worked seven days a week, and was rarely home. My youngest child, seven years old at the time, missed me so much that he started carrying a picture of me to school in his pocket. Until then, I'd been very active in my church. But I became too busy for most of my church life and missed many meetings. Word spread about our situation, and I received many calls with words of encouragement and emotional support from fellow church members. On New Year's Eve I was working at the store. When I took a break, I saw my husband walking toward me with an odd look on his face. I asked what was wrong. He handed me an envelope, saying "I found this in our mailbox." The envelope was fully addressed but there was no stamp or return address. Inside was a note: "from our family to yours, we share with you our good fortune and pray for your family's health and financial well being in the coming year." Then my husband handed me another sheet of paper, folded in half. I unfolded the paper to see 10 crisp, brand-new 100-dollar bills. To say the least, I was shocked, and also very humbled. Who cared so much about us they would give us a thousand dollars? Our families live 1,300 miles away so I knew it wasn't a relative. But who? For a while I wondered who gave us that amazing gift. My curiosity almost became an obsession. Then one day I realized we're not supposed to know. The giver -- or givers -- purposely didn't tell us. It was a true act of selfless giving with no chance of public acknowledgment. That note is now laminated and framed. I try to repeat that anonymous act of kindness and caring as often as possible, even if on a smaller scale. Although I cannot afford to give someone that much money, I've often given someone in need $20, $50, or $100. We received the cash gift when we needed money badly, but the greater gift came later. We saw the true meaning of selfless giving, and have made a point of doing the same ever since. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: .-------. * | # | * |_______| * _|=======|_ * * [___________] .' `. * | / : @ @ : \|/_ : < : // \~_s~-~s~s`._`...'_.' // * * `--~-~-~~s~/`"""' `-. // /'/s/ _ `// / /s/ (_) / ///s/ _ : * * ///s/ (_) .' * // |/`. .' __// .-''-------'`-. /|\ .' _ `. * / | \: (_) : : _ : : (_) : * : _ : * : (_) : : : ""'"""'""`. .'"'"""'""'"" jgs `-._ _.-' `"""""' >THE FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY Joan was visiting the church that she used to belong to.
