>DIDN'T HAVE THE HEART

Paul Price was in his late sixties and lived with his mother on a 160
acre farm a mile west of Miller, Missouri.

His father, Hubert, had been the telegraph operator when MIller still
had a railroad and a depot. Hubert had swallowed his tongue some years
before during a seizure, and Paul was left to do the farming.

Every morning Paul would drive into town to get the mail at the post
office, and then join his cronies, mostly WWII veterans, to drink
coffee at the cafe next door, tell the same war stories over and over
again, and, in general, solve the problems of the world.

Paul became king of the roost when he was called to serve on the grand
jury in Kansas City, 170 miles to the north.

"Yessir, boys, we indicted that feller for sure", he would say. "He
was a mean 'un. I had had him figgered out, though. He was Mafia through
and through," and he would tell the story over and over, with a little
more embelishment each time.

Then one of the indicted criminal's partners somehow managed to get
hold of the names of the grand jurors, and started calling them with
threats to their lives. Paul's stock began to rise at the cafe.

"Boys, he said he was comin' to blow me away! I ain't scared, though.
I got a long lane up to my house and a new 12 gauge. He'll have to go
some to blow me away. I ain't scared at all!"

But I heard later that Paul did seem to go around with something of a
worried look.

I knew nothing of those events at the time, as I was living in
Springfield, 30 miles to the east and was learning to fly airplanes. One
day after I had soloed and was allowed to take the little Cessna out by
myself, I flew down to Miller, made a couple of circles around the town
and happened to spot Paul on his tractor in the middle of the twenty
acre field across the road from the house, plowing.

"I believe I'll just buzz ol' Paul," I thought, so I flew out north a
little distance since Paul was going south, dropped my altitude to just
over the telephone wires and flew directly over Paul's head. I pulled
the little Cessna up sharply, banked to the left, looked back and was
astonished by what I saw.

Paul had stopped the tractor, jumped off and was running pell mell
toward the fence row. I made another circle around the field, but I
couldn't see him in the brush. I was hoping he would come out and wave
at least. When I made still another circle and he didn't reappear, I
flew on back to Springfield. "I guess he didn't know it was me," I said
to myself as I tied down the little plane.

Paul's star had risen at the cafe. He now had a story that none of
the other old guys could ever match.

"Boys, they done it. They come after me! They come after me with a
airplane! I never figgered on that", he would say, "That's why I didn't
have my shotgun! I run for the fence row, boys, because I had to, and
they come around that field twice more, boys, alookin' for me. They was
low, boys, mighty low, and if I'da had my 12 gauge I coulda blowed 'em
outa the sky!"

I heard later that the story had expanded to include descriptions of
the plowed dirt flying up from the impact of the machine gun bullets and
how he had heard at least one bullet whistling by his head.

I never did tell anyone, at least until after Paul died, that it was
only me.

I didn't have the heart. But I am glad he didn't have his shotgun.

>Yellow Shirt

The yellow shirt had long sleeves, four extra-large pockets trimmed in
black thread and snaps up the front. It was faded from years of wear,
but still in decent shape. I found it in 1963 when I was home from
college on Christmas break, rummaging through bags of clothes Mom
intended to give away.

'You're not taking that old thing, are you?' Mom said when she saw me
packing the yellow shirt.. 'I wore that when I was pregnant with your
brother in 1954!'

'It's just the thing to wear over my clothes during art class, Mom.
Thanks!' I slipped it into my suitcase before she could object. The
yellow shirt be came a part of my college wardrobe. I loved it.

After graduation, I wore the shirt the day I moved into my new
apartment and on Saturday mornings when I cleaned.

The next year, I married. When I became pregnant, I wore the yellow
shirt during big-belly days. I missed Mom and the rest of my family,
since we were in Colorado and they were in Illinois . But, that shirt
helped. I smiled, remembering that Mother had worn it when she was
pregnant, 25 years earlier.

That Christmas, mindful of the warm feelings the shirt had given me, I
patched one elbow, wrapped it in holiday paper and sent it to Mom.
When Mom wrote to thank me for her 'real' gifts, she said the yellow
shirt was lovely. She never mentioned it again..

The next year, my husband, daughter and I stopped at Mom and Dad's to
pick up some furniture. Days later, when we uncrated the kitchen
table, I noticed something yellow taped to its bottom. The shirt!

And so the pattern was set.

On our next visit home, I secretly placed the shirt under Mom and Dad's
mattress. I don't know how long it took for her to find it, but almost
two years passed before I discovered it under the base of our
living-room floor lamp. The yellow shirt was just what I needed now
while refinishing furniture. The walnut stains added character.

In 1975 my husband and I divorced. With my three children, I prepared
to move back to Illinois. As I packed, a deep depression overtook me.
I wondered if I could make it on my own. I wondered if I would find
a job. I paged through the Bible, looking for comfort. In Ephesians,
I read, 'So use every piece of God's armor to resist the enemy whenever
he attacks, and when it is all over, you will be standing up.'

I tried to picture myself wearing God's armor, but all I saw was the
stained yellow shirt.. Slowly, it dawned on me. Wasn't my mother's
love a piece of God's armor? My courage was renewed.

Unpacking in our new home, I knew I had to get the shirt back to
Mother. The next time I visited her, I tucked it in her bottom dresser
drawer.

Meanwhile, I found a good job at a radio station. A year later I
discovered the yellow shirt hidden in a rag bag in my cleaning closet.

Something new had been added. Embroidered in bright green across the
breast pocket were the words 'I BELONG TO PAT.'

Not to be outdone, I got out my own embroidery materials and added an
apostrophe and seven more letters.

Now the shirt proudly proclaimed, 'I BELONG TO PAT'S MOTHER.' But I
didn't stop there. I zig-zagged all the frayed seams, then had a
friend mail the shirt in a fancy box to Mom from Arlington, VA. We
enclosed an official looking letter from 'The Institute for the
Destitute,' announcing that she was the recipient of an award for good
deeds.

I would have given anything to see Mom's face when she opened the box.
But, of course, she never mentioned it.

Two years later, in 1978, I remarried. The day of our wedding, Harold
and I put our car in a friend's garage to avoid practical jokers. After
the wedding, while my husband drove us to our honeymoon suite, I
reached for a pillow in the car to rest my head. It felt lumpy. I
unzipped the case and found, wrapped in wedding paper, the yellow
shirt. Inside a pocket was a note: 'Read John 14:27-29. I love you
both, Mother.'

That night I paged through the Bible in a hotel room and found the
verses: 'I am leaving you with a gift: peace of mind and heart. And
the peace I give isn't fragile like the peace the world gives. So
don't be troubled or afraid. Remember what I told you: I am going
away, but I will come back to you again. If you really love me, you
will be very happy for me, for now I can go to the Father, who is
greater than I am. I have told you these things before they happen so
that when they do, you will believe in me.'

The shirt was Mother's final gift. She had known for three months that
she had terminal Lou Gehrig's disease. Mother died the following year
at age 57.

I was tempted to send the yellow shirt with her to her grave. But I'm
glad I didn't, because it is a vivid reminder of the love-filled game
she and I played for 16 years. Besides, my older daughter is in
college now, majoring in art. And every art student needs a baggy
yellow shirt with big pockets.

A true friend is someone who reaches for your hand and touches your
heart.

>Just Come Back Later Story Editor:
by Guy Slater Joyce Schowalter
Tennessee, USA

My wife and I moved to the Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee in
November of 2005, from a large metropolitan area to a very rural
area. While moving we had the help of our adult daughter and our
2-year-old granddaughter.

During the hectic days of moving into our new home, we ate out in
the local community a lot. One evening we decided to have dinner at
"Cindy's Catfish Kitchen."

Cindy's is a buffet style restaurant, all you can eat. It had been a
long day of moving boxes and furniture, and tomorrow would see us on
the long drive back to our former home for another load, a thousand
mile long trip. We were all tired, and our granddaughter was cranky
to top it all off. But the buffet was great, and we ended our meal
feeling rested and relaxed.

When I went to pay our bill, card in hand, the waitress cashier told
me that Cindy's didn't have the ability to take either credit or
debit cards. Being from the "big city," using a credit or debit card
was the norm. Oops!

I had no cash in my pocket, but about 10 miles back down the road
I'd seen a bank with an ATM. I told the lady that I would leave my
family there and return in a few minutes to pay for our meals.

"Oh, y'all don't have to do that," she told me. "You just come back
some time and pay us then."

WHAT!? These people had never seen me before, did not know if I
would ever return, yet they trusted me to return to pay for three
adult meals? This is not something that I had ever encountered in
the big city, that's for sure.

We have lived here for almost six years, and every single week I see
other acts of trust like this happening. It may be a "country"
thing, or just plain Southern hospitality.

Whatever it is, I certainly like it, and I pass on this kindness
every chance I get.

>A LOVE LIKE HIS
(By Johnnie Ann Burgess Gaskill, http://www.justaminute.faithweb.com
/meet_johnnie_gaskill.html")

11:15 p.m., the clock said. Even so, I kept on reading Beneath a
Southern Sky by Deborah Raney. I had to find out what the main
characters decided to do about the dilemma in which they inadvertently
found themselves. No matter what they chose to do, everyone would lose
something; but one of them would suffer the major (heartbreaking!)
loss. But which one?

As I'd read about the earlier difficulties each of them (and their
families) had faced, I'd often wondered, What would I do if I were in
their place? I was glad I didn't have to decide, especially when the
BIG question arose, demanding an immediate answer.

Because I agonized for the characters and with them as they tried to
figure out what to do, I continued reading their story-long past the
midnight hour. I had to find out what they decided to do. Was I
surprised!

One of the three volunteered to take the greatest loss. Yes,
volunteered! Why? He loved the others so much that he took the harder,
lonelier path in order to give the easier one to them.

What a powerful (and memorable!) picture of real love - God's kind of
love! The story, even though it was a fictional one, helped me to see
that true love - genuine love - voluntarily gives up what is best for
one's self in order to give the best to the beloved.

That set me to thinking. "How often do I love that way?" With remorse,
I had to admit, "Not often."

I want to love others with God's kind of love, but, the truth is, I
fail to love sacrificially. Oh, when loving is easy (less costly), I do
fairly well. But when the price of loving gets high, I begin to argue,
"But what about what I need? What about what I deserve? Don't I count,
too?"

Obviously, I have a lot to learn about loving. (Do you?) Real love not
only wants what is best for another, it does everything possible to
provide it, no matter how much it costs the giver. Sometimes what is
best may not cost much - a little quality time, a bit of encouragement,
a chance to succeed, and so forth. But sometimes, loving requires more
of us than we can comfortably give, more than we want to give. It is
then that we find out whether or not we truly love others.

According to the Bible, real love does whatever is necessary in order
to give the best to others. For example, John 3:16 says, "For God so
loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who
believes in him will not perish but have eternal life" (NLT). And we
know (don't we?) what misunderstanding, mistreatment - even death -
Christ endured in order to provide life - abundant and eternal - for
sinners like you and me. That's why John, who was an eyewitness to how
Christ suffered on behalf of others, wrote, "Dear friends, since God
loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other" (1 John 4:11,
NLT).

Since each situation you and I face is real, not fictional, it's
vitally important for us to love as Christ would if He were in our
place and dealing with the same people and problems we face. You see,
others are "reading" our lives. What we do has a powerful (and
memorable!) effect on them.

>Fresh Start
(By John Coody)

"On the last day, that great day of feast, Jesus stood and cried out,
saying, 'If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who
believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will
flow rivers of living water.'" John 7:37-38

If anyone reading today is in need of a fresh start, there is good
news. God is willing to grant it. A couple of weeks ago, I took a
break from writing. I was tired, distressed and just honestly didn't
know what to do about the situations I was facing. Being the
courageous person that I am, my desire was to be four again and
play with blocks.

Facing the trials and adversities of life is difficult. Facing our
own struggles and failures is no fun. However, God's plan is to
take all of these things, and use them to strengthen us. Romans 8:28
says, "And we know that all things work together for good to those
who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose."
As many pastors have preached, it doesn't say all things are good.
It says that our situations will work together for our good [as we]
keep pressing on. Paul wrote in Phil. 3:13-14, "Brethren, I do not
count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting
those things which are behind, and reaching forward to those
things which are ahead, I press toward the goal of the upward call
of God in Christ Jesus."

My folly was in turning back. My reasoning for taking time off was
to work on my own issues and seek a fresh start. I was thirsty. In
order to begin again, we need a thirst for God.

John 7:37 says, "If anyone thirsts..." If you need "refreshment" in
your walk with Christ, ask yourself, "How thirsty am I for Jesus?
How much desire for His will and ways do I have in my heart?" After
asking those questions, ask Him to help you.

"Let him come to Me and drink." Be determined to leave everything and
follow Jesus. In order to truly live in Christ, we have to remove any
distraction, which could mean sacrificing something we hold dear,
whether it is a relationship, job, etc. When you have done these
things, make a decision to surrender. When I stopped worrying about
what I was going to do and decided to trust Him, He showed me once
again that He already had my way prepared.

Though in our eyes, our situations may be impossible, we must never
limit what God can do. He is the Creator. He is capable of taking care
of His creation. I pray that each of us will be learning to exercise
our faith more and more.

...Don't limit God - Christians think about this...

Eph.3:
[17] That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being
rooted and grounded in love,
[18] May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and
length, and depth, and height;
[19] And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye
might be filled with all the fulness of God.
[20] Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all
that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
[21] Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all
ages, world without end. Amen.

'now unto him [God] who is able to do - what? A part of what you ask
of him? No? 'able to do - what? All of what you ask of him? No!
'EXCEEDING ABUNDANTLY ABOVE ALL That we ask or think,' or Think?

That means you and I can NOT even imagine something greater then what
God is able to do - it is WAY OVER OUR Comprehension - WAY Over Our
Heads! AND What is our limit? 'according to the power that worketh in
us. - That's it - the power that works in you is God's spirit - that
wonderful God in Christ in You!

What can hinders your spirit? Belief. Positive belief and you can do
all things through Christ - You believe it and like Jesus said you got
it! You can move mountains!

Matt.17:
[19] Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we
cast him out?
[20] And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I
say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say
unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove;
and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Matt.7
[7] Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and
it shall be opened unto you:

BUT don't be in folly with your asking...

Jas.4
[3] Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume
it upon your lusts.

Greed and unbelief will get you no where with God - otherwise, it is
'EXCEEDING ABUNDANTLY ABOVE ALL That we ask or think,'

Don't limit God.

>Time For a Trade-In?

[If my body were a car, this is the time I would be thinking about
trading it in for a newer model...]

I have lumps and dents and scratches in my finish, and my paint job is
getting a little dull - but that's not the worst of it.

My fenders are too wide to be considered stylish. They were once as
sleek as a little MG - now they look more like my mom's old Buick.

My seat cushions have split open at the seams. My seats are sagging.

Seat belts? I gave up all belts when Ben & Jerry's opened a shop in my
neighbourhood.

Air bags? Forget it. The only bags I have these days are under my eyes.
Not counting the saddlebags, of course.

I have soooooo many miles on my odometer. Sure, I've been many places
and seen many things, but when is the last time an appraiser factored
life experiences against depreciation?

My headlights are out of focus and it's especially hard to see things
up close.

My reaction is not as graceful as it once was. I slip and slide and
skid and bump into things even in the best of weather.

My whitewalls are stained with varicose veins. It takes me hours to
reach my maximum speed.

I'm burning fuel at an inefficient rate. But here's the worst of it:
almost every time I sneeze, cough or sputter, I leak fluids. I'm so
ready for a trade in! Anyone know where I can get a good deal?

[Praise the Lord, we know one day we WILL get a new body, Amen??? :) ]

>The Anointing part 9

Matt 11:27

“All things have been delivered to me by my Father, and no one knows
the Son except my Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the
Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him….”

To some, these are difficult statements to comprehend, to others? Not
so difficult…

“ALL THINGS DELIVERED’

At all times, Christ has control for the good of God's people, God's
Children as our ‘mediator’.

This is how it had to be and not even the angels understood, But it was
God’s plan to reveal Himself to us, HIS people, HIS children in order
to bring about their redemption and salvation. There was NO other way!
A price HAD to be paid, ! redemption and salvation do NOT come
cheaply! CHRIST! God's Only begotten Son! gave Himself! At Calvary…

NO one! Knoweth the Father! The ONLY person who knows the Father... IS
the SON! And the only one Who knows the SON...is the Father! How so?
Why is it that we let our curiosity get the better of us on most
occasions to ‘get to the bottom’ of things? Yet we are so
‘apprehensive’ when it comes to seeking a ‘full’ understanding of just
WHO Jesus Is?

We can't just “choose to know God, the Son or the gift of holy spirit
...it all depends on having a relationship ‘with’ God and how He
chooses to ‘reveal’ Himself to you personally. If and when, He only
knows! not you, not I - only He!

The way we relate to our Father, is in the way we see Him…and it also
affects the way we relate to other people around us as did Job for a
time, see God has being hard to get along with, sometimes severe, if
that’s how we see God, our lives will be as Jobs were, miserable and
hard to endure…But on the other side of the coin, if we see God as a
joyful God, not at all hard to please and always willing to show His
Love, not at all an ”old” man sitting in judgement, then we will have
a much more enjoyable, happy life.

Well, lets take a look at a few scriptures that help us to ”assimilate”
some of the knowledge of God…

Gen 18:14

IS ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR THE LORD?

“At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time
of life, and Sarah shall have a son”.

Whatever way you personally “see” God, is directly related to how He
has chosen to reveal Himself to you, in the messages He gives to you
and the deeds he performs around you…

Jer 32:17
Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy
great power and stretched out arm, and there IS NOTHING TOO HARD FOR
THEE.

How we see Our God, how we “feel” our God, how we seek to be with
Him,…’commune’with Him…...all these things have an influence on the
relationship we build with Him..It matters very little what “we” do!
But what’s in our hearts, and that has a direct result on what we do,
and how God sees us and favors us with HIS unabounding Grace! Amen?

The anointing then, is not a result of our own efforts! It’s a result
of HIS Grace….our trip into the supernatural, and that’s what a life
with God is! SUPERNATURAL! But it isn’t brought about by ‘being good
to others’ or by attending church ‘religiously’!

It’s by believing that God will move through us, through our lives,
that we are put on a solid foundation, for moving around in the
supernatural! Sounds a little scary I know to the ones who are still
‘babes’ in Christ and haven’t yet ”met” Him personally…but continue to
believe, building on your Faith and you WILL! Find His grace The
Bible tells us so in Eph 2:8-9…

As for miracles? Well we need to realize that miracles only happen
through the power and the will of God, not our will be done…but HIS!

Isaiah talks about “waiting” on the Lord, its telling us not to get
ahead, and not to lag behind, but to stay “with” the Lord…and we will
raise up with wings like eagles…! Oh Wow! Hallelujah!….We are not
to try to make things happen of our own accord…and if we ourselves try
to’manufacture’ miracles, we will move ahead of God ….and become out of
step with Him….

I know I have been in services, where ministers try to ’induce’ the
movement of the Holy Spirit! He cant be ‘induced’!! He can be invited
yes! But never ‘induced’….a good way to lose people from your
meetings are to “artificially produce” a mood, people see through this
easily, can become distraught and disillusioned and turn away to look
elsewhere, and so they should! Chances are they wont find God in a
church who try’s to ‘mould’ Him!….Amen??

We do not need to damage anyone’s faith, we do not need to ‘conjure’ up
spirits that don’t exist! This happened all too frequently some time
ago, particularly in England and some parts of the States when
Ministers (tongue in cheek there!) tried to ‘teach’ people to Speak in
Tongues, or interpret…..They forgot the part of the scripture that
mentions as the “Spirit gave them utterance!” Bible says there will
be false prophets!!……be wary of this….….

GOD………DOES……HEAL……..~~!

GOD……….DOES……PERFORM MIRACLES!
But its HE that does that, not us….Amen?

---
...Amen! Thanks Tony!

>Selfless Intercession
by Tim Hall

David McCullough in his biography of Teddy
Roosevelt shines an impressive light on the
president's father. Theodore, Sr. ("Thee," as he
was known) undertook an endeavor during the Civil
War in which he successfully lobbied for an
Allotment System. Under this plan, soldiers from
New York regiments could send some or all of their
earnings back home to their families, easing some
of the suffering on the home front. For months
Thee and others traveled on horseback among the
Union camps, explaining the program and receiving
funds from the soldiers.

One might think, "Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. must
have gained a great deal of wealth through this
plan." But he didn't. He was not paid a single
penny for his time and the risk he undertook. His
actions were entirely selfless, devoted to helping
the struggling families of Union soldiers.

>A DREAM
By: Joseph J. Mazzella

I had a wonderful dream last night. It was one of those powerful
dreams that come when you are half-way between waking and sleeping. It
was also one of those special dreams that stick in your mind and stay
in your heart.
In the dream I was just a boy again walking through the woods near
my Grandma’s home where we all lived together. I came out near one of
our big gardens and saw my dad with two, large water buckets watering
the plants. I asked him if I could help and he smiled and handed me one
of the buckets. It was full of water but light as a feather. The water
inside was so crystal clear that it glowed in the sunshine. I
immediately started watering the field of wilted plants. The work that
I had always hated seemed a joy to me this time. The bucket stayed full
too no matter how much I poured. I laughed and smiled as I watered each
plant. Some plants sprung back to life with the first drop and seemed
to grow a foot almost instantly. Others needed a lot of water and
barely grew an inch. Still other plants seemed to shake off the water
and stay wilted no matter how much I poured. After a long time watering
I looked up and was saddened by what I saw. The garden had grown so
big. It seemed to stretch on forever in every direction. I looked over
at my dad in despair and told him that there was no way I could ever
water all of it. My Dad just smiled back and said not to worry because
there were plenty of Children to help. When I looked back I saw that He
was right. Over the endless garden there were thousands of boys and
girls with buckets each pouring the life giving water on the thirsty
plants.
I woke up after that, but I didn’t need Sigmund Freud to tell me
what this dream meant. God was just reminding me to keep pouring out
His love and light to this thirsty world. It is a lifetime’s work, but
there are plenty of us with light hearts and full buckets ready to do
it.

>Dazzling by Jean Fleming

I read of a phosphorescent spider in South Africa that attracts
its prey with dazzling light. This spider flashes bright, beautiful
light and moths keep coming toward it until they are devoured.

That sounds like sin doesn't it? Sin can fascinate us, thrill us
and woo us until we too, like the moth are destroyed. It dazzles, then
destroys.

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to
all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Don't let sin trap you into a lifestyle that will ultimately
destroy you. Stay away from the flashing, dazzling light of sin that
will entangle you with actions and the guilt those actions carry.

When we are entangled with sin we cannot hear God and receive His
blessings. Repent and break the power of sin.

Let Us Pray:
Father I pray for discernment so that I may see sin for what it is
and not be attracted to it no matter how dazzling it may appear.
Please forgive me sweet God almighty I pray and cleanse me of all
unrighteousness In Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

>Fishing on Sunday

A village pastor, known for his weakness for trout, preached against
fishing on Sunday.

The next day one of his members presented him with a fine string of
fish and said, hesitatingly, "I guess I ought to tell you, parson,
that those trout were caught on Sunday."

The minister hesitated, gazed appreciatively at the speckled trout,
and then said piously as he reached for his gift, "The fish aren't to
blame for that."

Trendy Hotels Bail on the Bible

By SCOTT MAYEROWITZ
ABC NEWS Business Unit

High-end hotels have been racing to boost their amenities, offering
flat-panel TVs, wireless Internet, expanded room service menus and
even intimacy kits that include condoms.

But one mainstay of the hotel room appears to be fading in these
trendy places: the bedside Bible.

Since 2001, the number of luxury hotels to include Bibles and other
religious materials has dropped by 18 percent, according to the
American Hotel and Lodging Association.

That doesn't mean that Bibles are disappearing entirely; the number
of hotels, motels and inns with in-room Bibles has increased from 79
percent in 1988 to 95 percent today.

But now, nearly a century after the first Bibles started to appear in
rooms, luxury hotels and resorts seem to be bucking that trend.

Kimpton Hotels used to provide copies of the New Testament and
sometimes a book of Buddhist inspirational phrases.

But a year and a half ago, the chain removed the books from rooms in
its 42 hotels, according to Mike DeFrino, senior vice president of
hotel operations.

Just Ask
The move was part of a larger push to be more environmentally
friendly, DeFrino said, and also included stripping phone books from
individual rooms.

Instead, Kimpton now offers copies of the New Testament, Old
Testament, Book of Mormon, the Quran and Buddhist and Hindu texts at
the front desk.

How many times do they get a request from guests for such books?

"Rarely," DeFrino said.

Posh Airline Seats
"People don't ask for this stuff. It's not something that they're
interested in," he said. "They don't ask for phone books and they
don't ask for religious books generally."

But it's not because guests are shy.

Some of Kimpton's hotels, particularly its Monaco brand, offer guests
the chance to have goldfish in their room through their stay. DeFrino
said roughly 15 percent of guests request a goldfish.

Kimpton isn't the only chain with a lack of bedside Bibles.

The Hotel Gansevoort in New York and the soon-to-open Gansevoort
South in Miami Beach don't and have never had Bibles in the rooms.
Instead, the hotel has opted for a library of assorted religious
texts and books available upon request.

Elon Kenchington, chief operating officer of the Gansevoort Hotel
Group, said the hotels tried to re-evaluate everything that has been
done by other hotels in the past and "not be sheep."

"The industry, like most things, evolves and changes," he said.

Kenchington said a couple of guests each week request the religious
materials, but he also believes many people carry their own prayer
books with them.

He said Gansevoort tries to put as many luxury items in a room that
space permits.

"We'd rather surprise them with things they wouldn't expect, like
iPod docking stations and plasma TVs," Kenchington said.

Bibles became a common item in lodging starting in 1908, when Gideons
International placed its first Bibles in hotel rooms.

The group's objective, "winning others to Christ," is advanced by
distributing 63 million Bibles worldwide each year to hotels, motels,
hospitals, nursing homes, domestic violence shelters, schools,
prisons, the military and elsewhere.

Not everybody reads the prayer books, but a lot of travelers
apparently do. One survey by travel publisher Fodor's found that more
than 20 percent of guests read the Bible while in their hotel rooms.

All Religions Served
But not all hotel guests want to read in their rooms -- let alone
read the Bible. And some hotels that market themselves more as
destinations rather than as places to rest your head have taken
notice.

When the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa opened in 2003, it was Atlantic
City's first new casino hotel in more than a decade. It also chose
not to stock its 2,000-plus rooms with Bibles.

It did, however, choose playful do-not-disturb signs that read "tied
up" on one side and on the other asks housekeeping to "tidy up."

The hotel and casino does offer religious books in the lobby. The
library there has loaner editions of the Gideon Bible and a dozen
other books for various religions.

When the casino opened, a spokesman told reporters, "What about the
Koran, the Greek Bible, the Old Testament, New Testament, Jehovah's
Witness? We opted, instead of excluding everyone, to include
everyone."

As hotels have downplayed the prominence of the Bible, the Nashville-
based Gideons have remained silent, declining to comment on the
trend.

While boutique hotels appear to be leading the trend, a survey of
nearly 10,000 hotels across the country by American Hotel and Lodging
Association highlights some other notable Bible trends.

Apparently the cost of a hotel stay makes a big difference.

The more you pay for a hotel room, the less likely a Bible will be
there. Only 73 percent of luxury hotels provided a Bible compared
with 99 percent of economy hotels.

Location also plays a factor. Hotels with the lowest percentage of
Bibles were in urban areas or were resorts. Those with the most were
located near interstate highways and at airports.

>About Cussing [No Cussing Zone]
By Mike Benson at KneeMail

OFTENTIMES WE ASSOCIATE late-night TV shows, such as the Tonight
Show, with celebrities. However, on January 21, 2009, Jay Leno
interviewed an unusual guest: 15-year-old McKay Hatch. In 2007,
Hatch founded his first No Cussing Club at his junior high school
in South Pasadena, California.

According to McKay's website, www.nocussing.com, the teen was
dismayed at the language many of the children at his school,
including some of his friends, were using. Rather than just put
up with it, as so many of us are prone to do, he decided to do
something about it. He mentioned it to his friends and actually
challenged them to stop cussing.

He says his friends were shocked; most of them didn't even realize
they were using offensive language, and certainly had no idea it
was bothersome to Hatch. Surprisingly, and very pleasantly so,
they accepted his challenge to stop swearing, and thus was born
the first No Cussing Club. The word spread and after one month the
club had 50 members. When McKay got into high school, he founded a
similar club, and had over 100 students join immediately. The word
has further spread until today there are over 20,000 members in
25 countries.

Club members take the "No Cussing Challenge," committing to use
better language. However, this is not just a "negative" challenge.,
to not use bad language, but a "positive" challenge as well, to use
"polite, respectful, and kind language."

Further, the club's motto is, "Leave people better than you found
them." This concept has impacted not only the recipients of the kind
language, but the speakers as well: McKay relates that many club
members have noticed a change in their own lives from using positive
language. And the concept has progressed to the club members "looking
for opportunities everyday to help people and lift them up through
their words and actions." (Liana Stanley)

...No Cussing Zone!

People today seem to forget about not taking the Lord's name in
vain and do it at a toss of the hat - OMG this and OMG that and even
have kid shows with kids saying it like it is no big deal!

Irritating. I wouldn't mind if they said 'Oh my goodness' but no, they
have to swear and take God's name in vain! And they think that saying
that is less offensive then saying the F word - I beg to differ.

Remind yourself and others to watch their tongue - I'm sure God is...

Exod.20:
[7] Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the
LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Deut.5:
[11] Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for
the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

God said it twice - so it is established!

It is time we renew our mind to God's Word and educate our children!

The Saunders family had just moved into their new parsonage and

that girl talking about? You're too young to be talking about man and
woman things." The little boy put his hands on his hips and looked his
father straight in the eye. "Pop, I know all about that," he said. "I

As a preschooler, Perry was a very studious little boy. He would
think silently for long periods of time, trying to decide how and why
something worked. One day, during the ride home from school, he showed
his mother his latest treasure - a paper cup full of dirt and a newly
sprouted sunflower, about an inch and a half tall. He told his mother
how he had planted this little seed and that it was going to grow very
big and be a flower. Then he quietly studied the plant for the duration
of the ride. When they arrived home he put his plant on the table.
Then he went straight to the parakeet's cage and began picking up
birdseed that "Tweety" had scattered on the floor below. When his
mother asked what he was doing, he replied, "I'm going to plant this and
grow a baby bird!" -- Melanie Moser of Louisville, Kentucky
