I remember a man in the subway in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, who asked me if I wanted him to sing for me and I said yes. His voice was richer than velvet, sweeter than your favorite flavor. It was pure and beautiful. I did not take my eyes off him as he sang, though I knew my family waited. This was like a special concert for me, just for me! When he was done I told him his voice was too beautiful not to share with others. He told me he had been an opera singer, but he had to stop because he was ill and could not be depended on. I wonder if the people of that city realize that a man who works in their subway has the voice of an angel? Here is a true story: In a Washington, DC, Metro Station, on a cold January morning in 2007, a man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, approximately 2,000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After about 3 minutes, a middle-aged man noticed that there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds, and then he hurried on to meet his schedule. About 4 minutes, the violinist received his first dollar. A woman threw money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk. At 6 minutes, a young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again. At 10 minutes, a 3-year old boy stopped, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head the whole time. This action was repeated by several other children, but every parent forced their children to move on quickly. At 45 minutes, only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32. After 1 hour, he finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed and no one applauded. There was no recognition at all. No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before, Joshua Bell played to a sold-out theater in Boston where the seats averaged $200 each to sit and listen to him play the same music. This is a true story and was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities. This experiment raised several questions: In a common-place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? If so, do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context? One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made, how many other things are we missing as we rush through life? -- Ellie Braun-Haley __________________________________________________ Ellie is a long time Heartwarmers contributor, author and motivational speaker. =========================================================== >-->From SermondFodder: _ \`*-. ) _`-. . : `. . : _ ' \ ; *` _. `*-._ `-.-' `-. ; ` `. :. . \ . \ . : .-' . The Roman says, 'Man, control thyself.' The Confucian says, 'Man, improve thyself.' The Buddhist says, 'Man, destroy thyself.' The Brahman says, 'Man, absorb thyself.' The Muslim says, 'Man, submit thyself.' But Jesus says, 'Without Me ye can do nothing.' " - The Encyclopedia of Sermon Illustrations The religions of the world are centered on man and what, they assume, he is capable of doing. Christianity is centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and what He can do in and through yielded vessels. It is gross deception to think that man is in control or can control anything. All he attempts is bound for failure. If, for some reason, he meets with success in his undertakings, it is only because God is working in the background to bring about great accomplishments for the benefit of others. Man needs God. This is a fact! It is a truth that will never change. What makes Christianity differ from the other religions of the world is the concept that Christ's followers have come to the realization that, without Jesus, they can do nothing in this life. They have had their understandings enlightened to see that they cannot change themselves nor their eternal destiny. They realize that they once were Hell-bound sinners in total rebellion toward God and could not change their direction. Someone bigger and better than themselves had to come and rescue them from the downward spiral of evil and wickedness. That Someone was Jesus. Jesus is, was, and always will be every man's only solution in life. To believe otherwise is to believe a lie! Religion says - "Man, save thyself. Deliver thyself. Change thyself." The only problem is - he can't do it. Jeremiah 13:23 - It is as possible for a man to change his sinful ways as it is for the Ethiopian to change his skin and the leopard his spots - "Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil." Man cannot turn from his evil ways on his own. Jeremiah 31:18 - In fact, in the Scriptures, he is oftentimes likened unto an untaught calf or an untrained, unbroken, or untoward steer who needs correction and discipline - "I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn Thou me, and I shall be turned..." The only way he can possibly turn from his evil ways is if God helps him. Read the following prayers in Scripture that prove our point - 1 Kings 18:37 - "Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that Thou art the LORD God, and that Thou hast turned their heart back again." Psalm 80:3 - "Turn us again, O God...and we shall be saved." Psalm 80:7 - "Turn us again, O God of hosts...and we shall be saved." Psalm 80:19 - "Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts...and we shall be saved." Psalm 85:4 - "Turn us, O God of our salvation..." The only way that we can possibly be saved from our sins or our troubles is for God to intervene by His Amazing Grace and rescue us. Outside of Christ, man is spiritually stupid, ignorant, and blind. He doesn't consider his folly and its end result. Isaiah 44:18-19 describes his condition this way - "They have not known nor understood.. And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say..." Isaiah 44:20 - The Prophet then goes on to graphically describe those people who are pursuing after the ways of sin and the world, seeking for riches and honor in that which is vain, unsubstantial, and unsatisfying - "He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?" Oh, that all religions of men would hear the words of the Prophet Isaiah today. They say that man can save himself. Can he? What does God's Word say? Man cannot turn himself around or deliver his own soul for he has a "deceived heart" which is bent on pursuing after the vain pleasures of this life - "...ashes..." The Scriptures clearly define that salvation comes from the Lord. It is a gift from God. It does not proceed from man. Ephesians 2:8 - "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God." Titus 3:5 - "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us..." Titus 3:3 - It is absolutely absurd for "foolish," "disobedient," and "deceived" people, "serving divers lusts and pleasures," to imagine that they have any "works of righteousness" to plead their case. Man needs God's help. He, being overpowered by the world and the flesh, cannot come to the Lord on his own or even attempt to change his own lifestyle. He needs God's Supernatural, "Drawing" Grace. Song 1:4 - "Draw me, we will run after Thee..." Jeremiah 31:3 - "...therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee." Hosea 11:4 - "I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love..." John 12:32 - "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto Me." Calvary's Love has and always will be God's greatest magnet which draws men, women, boys, and girls from their sinful lifestyles unto a holy relationship with Himself and His Son. Acts 4:12 - The Bible clearly singles out salvation as coming from one source alone - Jesus - "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." If man accomplishes anything in this life, all glory must go to God. Philippians 4:13 - "I can do all things through Christ Which strengtheneth me." 2 Corinthians 3:5 - "Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God." 2 Corinthians 4:7 - "But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us." Matthew 10:19-20 - "But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you." Luke 21:15 - "For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist." 1 Corinthians 3:6 - "I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase." 1 Corinthians 3:10 - "According to the grace of God, which is given unto me...I have laid the foundation..." 1 Corinthians 15:10 - "But by the grace of God I am what I am: and His grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me." Philippians 2:13 - "For it is God Which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure." In closing, is it Man or is it God? Is the answer for man to know, control, improve, absorb, or submit himself? If he leans on his own imagined power, strength, and skills; he will eventually do as the Buddhists advocate - "destroy thyself." Oh that the Church would shout from the highest mountain to all those yet to be saved - "For it is God...it is God...it is God...it is God" It is not what man can do. On the contrary, it is what God must do. If man does any good, it must immediately be attributed to God's Power and Grace operating in his life at the moment. How can you tell a religious man from a Christian? The man of religion boasts in what he has done; the Christian boasts in the Lord. Let's always remember and be sure to remind others as well - "...If there be any Praise, let it go to Calvary." Philippians 3:3 - "For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh." May God Bless His Word. Connie Giordano P. O. There were times when I wondered if I would make it to today; but I did! And because I did I'm going to celebrate! Today, I'm going to celebrate what an unbelievable life I have had so far: the accomplishments, the many blessings, and, yes, even the hardships because they have served to make me stronger. I will go through this day with my head held high, and a happy heart. I will marvel at God's seemingly simple gifts: the morning dew, the sun, the clouds, the trees, the flowers, the birds. Today, none of these miraculous creations will escape my notice. Today, I will share my excitement for life with other people. I'll make someone smile. I'll go out of my way to perform an unexpected act of kindness for someone I don't even know. Today, I'll give a sincere compliment to someone who seems down. I'll tell a child how special he is, and I'll tell someone I love just how deeply I care for her and how much she means to me. Today is the day I quit worrying about what I don't have and start being grateful for all the wonderful things God has already given me. I'll remember that to worry is just a waste of time because my faith in God and his Divine Plan ensures everything will be just fine. And tonight, before I go to bed, I'll go outside and raise my eyes to the heavens. I will stand in awe at the beauty of the stars and the moon, and I will praise God for these magnificent treasures. As the day ends and I lay my head down on my pillow, I will thank the Almighty for the best day of my life. One morning, she brought a pan of brownies to our class. As the goodies sat over by her chair, she gave each child a slip of paper marked with a household expense: house payment, utility bill, phone bill, entertainment, etc. My slip had a car payment. Before long, Mrs. Baughman picked up the tray of brownies and began naming the expenses written on the papers. As we gave her our expenses, she redeemed each one for a brownie. "Car payment" she announced. I jumped up to get my brownie from the pan. Finally the last brownie had disappeared. But one boy named Donald still held his unredeemed slip. "God!" called Mrs.Baughman. Donald came forward hoping the teacher had one more brownie hidden some where. With a knife Mrs.Baughman scraped the crumbs from the bottom of the pan into Donald's napkin. He got a pretty raw deal, I thought, just crumbs. "The brownies represent your money", the teacher explained to us. "If you don't give God his share right away, He probably won't get anything except maybe the crumbs." I never forgot that illustration. The day my friend Donald got only the brownie crumbs, even as a child I learned that God should have the first right to everything I have. In the years since Mrs.Baughman class I have struggled with giving and priorities, but whenever I recall the "Crummy Sunday School Lesson", I know who should and must always come first in my life! - Author Unknown -<>- _____ / \/_ //\__(\_\ |\ ^ ^ | .//_O \O_ \ \_ (_) / \ \_/ / __/\ /\__ / \ \ / / \ / \/\/\/ \ / | . | \ / | . | \ JRO >LAUGH By: Joseph J. Mazzella I find myself laughing a lot more these days. It isn't a mean laughter that hurts others' feelings, either. It is rather a laughter of wonderful delight that makes my heart feel light, my body feel great, and my soul feel pure joy. It is a laughter that comes when things go right and when things go wrong. It is a laughter that finds humor and bliss in all the ups and downs of life. It is a laughter that comes from loving God, loving life, loving myself, and loving others. I think that laughter often goes hand in hand with both love and joy. When we choose love and when we choose joy, we also choose laughter. This is because when we love God, ourselves, and others we can't help but feel joyous. And when we feel joyous we can't help but share it with the world through wondrous and delightful laughter. I think that God must often laugh in delight too as He watches over us with loving eyes and a joyous smile Don't be afraid to laugh. Don't hold it back. Let it out. Let it fill your heart, soul, mind, and voice. Let it brighten your day. Let it travel from you to all those around you and fill the air with its sweet, joyous music. William Blake once wrote "The Angel that presided at my birth said: `Little creature, formed of joy and mirth, Go, love without the help of anything on earth.'" Let's all make the angels that watch over us and the God who made us smile with delight at our lives then. Let's all choose to love each other, share joy with each other, and laugh together. Let's all laugh all through the day, at every chance we get, and at everything that brings humor and delight into our lives. Let's laugh at the puppy chasing her tail, at the baby giggling at our funny faces, and at the countless silly things we say and do. Let's laugh at the problems life gives us and the good times life brings us. Let's always live our lives with laughter, love, and delight. -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment: Life's Little Oops 14! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/whoops14.html How True It Is!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/nyear.html Home Security!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/security.html Advice For Living!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/advice.html Limos In US History!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/limos.html Sweets For The Sweet!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/sugar.html Extraordinary Photos!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/extraordinary.html John Scapes' Basement!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/basement.html Windows Through Time!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/windowstime.html Classic Chevy Collection!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/chevy.html Advice For The New Year!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/newyear.html Yearly Friendship Renewal!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/renewal.html Eagle Rescue!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/eaglerescue.html Fawn Rescue!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/fawnrescue.html Full New Years Index! https://tinyurl.com/y4xyz2w8 -<>- What’s In A Word? – Marriage https://tinyurl.com/yfcfcwk3 Manhattan Declaration Digest https://tinyurl.com/yk2qsthj TIS SO SWEET TO TRUST IN JESUS - Casting Crowns(with lyrics) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DdgkvnsHjM What a Beautiful Name w/ Break Every Chain - Hillsong Worship live https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEwDx8YJndU Leeland - Way Maker (Official Live Video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJCV_2H9xD0 Raise a Hallelujah (Live) [Lyric Video] | Bethel Music https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJFhHf-NjRg -<>- >In The News: Breaking: Trump Addresses the Nation, Says the Days of Tolerating Iran's 'Destructive' Behavior Are 'Over' https://tinyurl.com/yeccvybs Stock Markets Jump to All-Time High After Trump's Iran Address https://tinyurl.com/ye8kykjr Chris Matthews Calls Trump 'Assassin' for Taking Out Terrorist Who Targeted Kids https://tinyurl.com/ygvs93tp MSNBC Airs Baseless Iranian Propaganda About Dead US Soldiers https://tinyurl.com/vnyy5ju WhiteHouseNews: Our soldiers are safe, and America is prepared “No Americans were harmed in last night’s attack by the Iranian regime. You can always count on Barb to run people around on errands, babysit the kids, pick up stuff, help plan parties and so on -- what she does for everyone is seemingly endless. A few months ago, she called me on a Tuesday afternoon. After the usual exchange of pleasantries, she asked me if we had any plans for the coming Friday evening. No, I told her, nothing going on. "How would you guys like to go to Disney On Ice?" she asked. One of the touring Disney ice skating productions was in town for that weekend only; going to it would be fun, but tickets were out of our budget. At first, I supposed Barb was inviting us to go with her and her husband; my first thought was, that would be nice, but we can't afford it. My second thought, well, of course she already knows that! And I'm not letting her or anyone else pay for our tickets!" Little did I know what she had up her sleeve. Well, I sputtered, that would be nice, but, "Good!", she interrupted. "Because I just won four tickets, and I'm giving them to you guys!" WHAT?! I gasped. "Oh yeah, I do silly stuff like this constantly. One of the radio stations was giving tickets to the ninth caller. I called, and won. I know you guys don't usually have money for things like this, so I want you to have them." Turns out Barb and calls in for other contests all the time. And this time, she won! "I'll bring the tickets to church Wednesday night, okay?" Wednesday night she brought the tickets in a cute envelope with stickers all over it. Not only had she gone down to the radio station to get them, but she also went to Ticketmaster, because the radio station was just handing out passes that had to be traded at Ticketmaster. She told the ticket lady to be sure to give the best seats she could, because they were for two special kids. For two kids aged 4 and 7, this was a special gift indeed. It was even cool for us grown-ups. Our kids especially had a blast watching beloved Disney stories come to life with real actors and awesome skating. Our kids now have two special memories to last them for a long time: the memory of an awesome show, and the memory of the kindness that made it possible. The best thank you would have been to be able to see our kids' eyes shining with delight that night, but since that wasn't possible, passing along this story will have to do. So, for all you do, and especially for being the ninth caller, thank you. By the way, Barb, they were great seats, too! =======HeroicStories======= >-->From LaughAndLift: "Jesus was, and always will be, very threatening to those who insist on sitting on a throne. It's foolishness to think Jesus will accept the position of Co-King...He is the rightful Ruler and King - the Savior and Lord! Let's trust and worship Him with all our heart, and refuse to be threatened by His right to lead. Let's decide once and for all to relinquish control and get our pride-filled self off the throne." - Steve Troxel /'\ / / , c-' / /'-._ ,____,' .-'''-. .-'.// \ '-;-========,"-,' ' ,` /, \_//\ ,/ ( '- *) ) ( ./ ) {,}========'===='- ' , , , \/ ', -muse. _____'-.-`_______________________'-..-'____ >Road of Life (Author Unknown) At first, I saw God as my observer, my judge, keeping track of the things I did wrong, so as to know whether I merited heaven or hell when I die. He was out there, sort of like a president. I recognized His picture when I saw it, but I really didn't know Him. But later on when I met Christ, it seemed as though life were rather like a bike ride, but it was a tandem bike. and I noticed that Christ was in the back helping me pedal. I don't know just when it was that He suggested we changed places, but life has not been the same since. When I had control. I knew the way. It was rather boring, but predictable...It was the shortest distance between two points. But when He took the lead, He knew delightful long cuts, up mountains, and through rocky places at breakneck speeds, it was all I could do to hang on!! Even though it looked like madness, He said, "Pedal!" I worried and was anxious and asked, "Where are you taking me?" He laughed and didn't answer, and I started to learn to trust. I forgot my boring life and entered into the adventure. And when I'd say, "I'm scared," He'd lean back and touch my hand. He took me to people with gifts that I needed, gifts of healing, acceptance and joy. They gave me their gifts to take on my journey, my Lord's and mine. And we were off again. He said, "Give the gifts away; they're extra baggage, too much weight." So I did, to the people we met, and I found that in giving I received, and still our burden was light. I did not trust Him, at first, in control of my life. I thought He'd wreck it; but He knows bike secrets, knows how to make it bend to take sharp corners, jumps to clear high rocks, fly to shorten scary passages. And I am learning to shut up and pedal in the strangest places, and I'm beginning to enjoy the cool breeze on my face with my delightful constant companion, Christ. And when I'm sure I just can't do anymore, He just smiles and says..."Pedal." -<>- __ /_/\/\ \_\ / /_/ \ \_\/\ \ \_\/ unknown >My Hope Is In The Lord (A Hymn by Norman J. For me He died, For me He lives, And everlasting life and light He freely gives No merit of my own His anger to suppress. My only hope is found in Jesus' righteousness. For me He died, For me He lives, And everlasting life and light He freely gives And now for me He stands Before the Father's throne. He shows His wounded hands and names me as His own. For me He died, For me He lives, And everlasting life and light He freely gives His grace has planned it all, 'Tis mine but to believe, And recognize His work of love and Christ receive. I could not see my need for Him, my pride would not allow. I had it all, without a care, the "Self-sufficient" lie. My path was smooth, my sea was still, not a cloud was in my sky. I thought I knew His love for me, I thought I'd seen His grace, I thought I did not need to grow, I thought I'd found my place. But then the way grew rough and dark, the storm clouds quickly rolled; The waves began to rock my ship, my anchor would not hold. The ship that I had built myself was made of foolish pride. It fell apart and left me bare, with nowhere else to hide. I had no strength or faith to face the trials that lay ahead, And so I simply prayed to Him and bowed my weary head. His loving arms enveloped me, and then He helped me stand. He said, "You still must face this storm, but I will hold your hand." So through the dark and lonely night He guided me through pain. I could not see the light of day or when the storm might wane. Yet through the aches and endless tears, my faith began to grow. I could not see it at the time, but my light began to glow. I saw God's love in brand new light, His grace and mercy, too. For only when all self was gone could Jesus' love shine through. It was not easy in the storm, I sometimes wondered, "Why?" At times I thought, "I can't go on." I'd hurt, and doubt, and cry. But Jesus never left my side, He guided me each day. Through pain and strife, fire and flood, He helped me all the way. And now I see as never before how great His love can be. How in my weakness He is strong, how Jesus cares for me! He worked it all out for my good, although the way was rough. He only sent what I could bear, and then He cried, "Enough!" He raised His hand and said, "Be still!" He made the storm clouds cease. He opened up the gates of joy and flooded me with peace. I saw His face now clearer still, I felt His presence strong, I found anew His faithfulness, He never did me wrong. Now I know more storms will come, but only for my good, For pain and tears have helped me grow as naught else ever could. I still have so much more to learn as Jesus works in me; If in the storm I'll love Him more, that's where I want to be! -- unknown >Updated FUN STUFF URLS - Oh Yeah Shangy! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/urls.html FUN URLS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -->ShangyFunList AD RATES: $20 will get your a message (of up to 40 words) out to all self-subscribed readers and $5 more will give you the same message also put up for all web site readers.
