My doctor has placed me on a very restricted diet that consists only of above-ground vegetables, high quality protein, and raw, unpasteurized dairy products. I may not consume root vegetables, legumes, fruit or grains. Needless to say, this is a very difficult and boring way to eat. And, it is not all that easy to find "high quality" protein that is grass-fed and raised without unnecessary antibiotics, growth hormones, and the like. What my diet boils down to is that I spend an inordinate amount of time just finding and procuring the various foods I need to fulfill my doctor's dietary prescriptions. Given my health issues, there are many days when all this effort just seems like way too much work. The weekend of May 20, 2006 someone responded to my needs in a way that reinforced my belief in the basic goodness of people. As it turns out, they are located only nine miles from me, near Charlottesville, Virginia. I can't begin to tell you how excited I was to discover this wonderful farm so close to my own home. I actually began to dream about the meats I'd be able to obtain there. When I arrived, I discovered that the "farm store" was actually a freezer on the porch of the farmhouse. Fine by me. The farmer came out to meet me as I drove up. We introduced ourselves and went up on the porch to check out all the great stuff in their freezer. I began to pick out package after package of meat I planned to buy, giddy in my excitement. What good fortune to have discovered this farm! As we started to complete the transaction, I suddenly wondered if they took credit cards, and asked, "Do you guys take credit cards?" He turned to me and said, "I'm sorry, we don't, but we're working on that." There I was, holding many packages of frozen beef, realizing that I'd have to put it all back and return later. I told him I'd have to come back another day, since I hadn't thought to bring my checkbook. This wonderful farmer then made my day by saying, "That's OK, just send us a check when you get home." Apparently, I'm not the only one who still believes that people are good. You'd better believe I gratefully sent that check the same day, as soon as I got home! Now, I'm not certain what this means, but added to his retired government employee pension, I'm fairly sure it translates into pretty big bucks. Was I pleased for him? I should have been. He puts in staggering hours at work, and is extremely productive -- an all around great guy. I sometimes wonder if his good wife remembers what he looks like. But I wasn't pleased. In truth, I was just plain jealous! Why him, I thought? I'm pretty productive myself, but at my annual evaluation I received a meager 4% raise and nothing resembling a promotion. I lay awake nights worrying about the hefty home equity loan I had to take out to keep the roof over our heads, literally. I pray that my college age daughter doesn't overdraw her checking account, again. I peek at the mileage on my '93 Camry, and tell myself that 135,000 miles is nothing for a Toyota. Instead of wishing my friend well, I was wallowing in self-pity -- staring in envious stupor at the computer. Ah, but the Lord indeed moves in mysterious ways. Something caught my eye. Two tattered sticky notes, attached to my computer. They've been there for a few years, so I don't usually "see" them anymore. But today I saw them again, as if for the first time. One is lime green with the message, "Have a great day Mom! I love you!" That one is from my daughter Helen. She was probably 11 or 12 when she wrote it. She's 15 now, and besides being an excellent student, my little hospital candy striper is a beautiful and caring young woman. She still asks for a hug, and still wants her "mommy" to tuck her in at night. Now there's something money can't buy. The second note is lemon yellow. This one is from my son Stephen, now 10. By the wobbly handwriting, I'm guessing this note is vintage 6 year old. It simply says, "I love you Mom." He continues to echo that sentiment every day in a long-standing ritual. When I drop him off for school, I'll say, "I love you Stevie". His reply is, "I love you. Angels around you and your car!" I look around my office and see the homemade artwork, and the cluttered array of photos. I see a favorite picture of my oldest daughter Annie, except in this picture she is an awesome little blonde creature of two, clutching her stuffed cat Ming and leaning against her (wow...young!) mom. Ming hasn't changed much over the years, but Annie has. Despite the overdrawn checkbook, she constantly amazes me with her self-motivation. I am convinced that Annie can do anything she sets her mind to, which includes making her crabby mother laugh when she needs it most. She is still awesome. I realize with infinite gratitude that my friend can keep his vice president's title and all the money that goes with it, with my best wishes for success. I wouldn't trade my title for any other, and no one in the world will ever share it. I'm Annie, Helen and Stevie's mom. Physicians' Observations and Interpretations of the Influence of Religion and Spirituality on Health (Archives of Internal Medicine) Researchers questioned 1,144 doctors about how religion influences health care, and found that their responses varied with their religious beliefs. Fewer than 10 percent of doctors interviewed had no religious affiliation. A little more than a third said their intrinsic religious faith was high, a similar number said they were not very religious, and the rest called themselves moderately devout. The paper appears in the April 9 issue of The Archives of Internal Medicine. Over all, only 1 percent believed that religion has a negative effect on health, and 2 percent said it has no influence one way or the other. But 54 percent said God sometimes affects a patient's health, and 33 percent said religion and spirituality help prevent specific medical events like heart attacks, infections and death. Physicians with high levels of belief were more than seven times as likely as those with low levels to believe that religion is a large influence on health. While more than 90 percent of very religious doctors believed that religion and spirituality can often help patients cope with their problems, 38 percent of them nevertheless held that religious belief can sometimes lead to negative emotions. "The most telling part of this outcome," said Dr. Farr A. Curlin, the lead author and an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, "is that it shows that what doctors bring to the data, whether religious or secular, seems to have as much to do with their interpretations of the data as the data itself." He and his co-authors noted that few topics in medicine cause more disagreement than the relationship between religion and health. Dr. Jerome E. Groopman, a professor of medicine at Harvard who was not involved in the study, said he was surprised by how many doctors believe in divine intervention. "The most striking finding is the perception that God is micromanaging clinical outcomes at the bedside," said Dr. Groopman, the author of the new book "How Doctors Think" (Houghton Mifflin). He added that "this is one of the really great tensions" in Judaism. "Maimonides," he went on, "rails against magic and sorcery and the idea that you can expect miracles, which is really what this boils down to, that the natural course of the world is altered on a regular basis by God intervening. But there is a fundamentalist reading of the Bible where God does intervene in those ways." The authors were unable to explain why religious and nonreligious physicians differed so radically in their interpretations of the influence of spirituality in health care, but they suggest that religious doctors may be more likely to inquire about spiritual matters, and therefore more likely to report on evidence that less religious doctors do not seek or find. They also suggest that patients may look for doctors who share their religious beliefs. Doctors who practice in the South, for example, are more likely to be religious and, unsurprisingly, more likely to report that their patients mention religious issues. It may also be that if patients talk more about what they believe is God's intervention in their care, physicians are more likely to believe them. At the same time, the researchers suggest that doctors with strong religious beliefs may interpret the same medical findings in different ways, with the most religious among them seeing an effect of spirituality where others see none. According to background information in the article, it is well known that doctors' judgments are influenced by factors other than scientific evidence. But this study, Dr. Farr said, demonstrates that the religious beliefs of doctors can strongly shape the ways in which they interpret scientific data and clinical evidence. "This is why we have this ongoing debate," he added. "There are these deep issues at stake." -Sorry, I lost the original link to this onne. Please read his note below and then offer up your prayers to our Lord for a calming peace to wash over Roger and good results on his test. Nancy ----------- Over the past several years I have developed a few medical problems which I have allowed to go unchecked. Like most people, I had hoped that the symptoms would just go away. However, as time passed the problems just seem to get even worse. I have always wondered if my battle with cancer had returned but was very glad to hear that this is not the case. On May 14 I will undergo several tests at the hands of Doctor Ruttgers (Digestive Associates) here in Brunswick, Georgia. All I know is that (putting it nicely) they will go in at both ends at one time and see if they can see what the problem might possibly be. For some reason I have very little strength and it is very difficult for me to stay up for more than an hour at a time. I, along with Wayne, will try as best we can to stay on top of the American Orphan Foundation and keep things running. Wayne is working every day and is very tired after putting in many 12-14 hours days painting houses and office complexes. I hope all of you will help us keep things going during this period. Many hours of hard work has gone into helping these children and I do not want to have this project fail. It is one of the most important things Wayne and I have accomplished. Must say that I am a little worried and a few prayers would be very much appreciated. Roger ----- ...the more people to pray the better - Jesus instructs us here: Mathew 18: 18-20 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. The 'binding together' as defined by Jesus here is that at least two or three ask for the same thing of God through Jesus Christ. There is great power in numbers and prayer circles. The more the merry! -<>- >HAPPY MOMENTS By: Joseph J. Mazzella I took my sons out for a walk at a nearby lake the other day. The weather was perfect for it. The sky was clear, the temperature was warm, the sun was dancing off the waves, and flowers were blooming along the walk path surrounding the water. Couples both young and old were walking along the path enjoying all of this God given beauty. Dozens of people were fishing peacefully along the banks and in boats. Children were running and playing with their dogs. Families were setting up picnic dinners for later. Some people were just sitting in the grass looking blissfully out on the water. I even saw one young woman praying with a joyful smile on her face as she sat under a tree. Never had I seen so many people spending their time so well. The day after the great teacher and writer Leo Buscaglia died a note was found in his typewriter. It simply said, "Every moment spent in unhappiness is a moment of happiness lost." I for one don’t want to lose any more moments of happiness that I have left in this world. I want to use and enjoy every single one of them. It doesn’t matter if they are spent working, playing, eating, reading, singing, praying, or just walking in the sunshine. I want to spend my time well and fill my life with happy moments. I want to choose love, share joy, and be one with God all day long every single day of my life. Happiness isn’t something you find. Happiness is something you choose. Happiness is something you live. Life here is both precious and brief. Spend it well. Live it joyously. Don’t waste a second of it on unhappiness. Go to work with a smile on your face. Greet others with love in your heart. Exercise with pleasure. Play with delight. Pray with both peace and joy. Learn from your pain. Grow from your troubles. And always use every moment you are given to choose more love, joy, peace, happiness, and oneness with God. -<>- >God is in control __ __ |. ||. | .| || ||| | | | W |: ||: | |'| [ ] ._____ | || | | | .--'| 3 .---"| |. |' _ | || |-. | | __ |. | /| _|__ | || |__ .-'| _| || | || '- | || \|// / | |' | | | |' |' | |.| || | || '-' -( )-| | | | | | | __| '-' ' '' ' "" ' J V | ` - |_' ' |__ ___ ' / \ \/ | Hilsen, Peer W Hansen-- A man from Norfolk , VA called a local radio station to share this on Sept 11th, 2003. His Name was Robert Matthews. These are his words: "A few weeks before Sept. 11th, my wife and I found out we were going to have our first child. She planned a trip out to California to visit her sister. On our way to the airport, we prayed that God would grant my wife a safe trip and be with her. Shortly after I said 'amen,' we both heard a loud pop and the car shook violently. We had blown out a tire.. I replaced the tire as quickly as I could, but we still missed her flight.. Both very upset, we drove home. I received a call from my father who was retired NYFD. He asked what my wife's flight number was, but I explained that we missed the flight. My father informed me that her flight was the one that crashed into the southern tower. I was too shocked to speak. My father also had more news for me; he was going to help. 'This is not something I can't just sit by for I have to do something..' I was concerned for his safety, of course, but more because he had never given his life to Christ. After a brief debate, I knew his mind was made up. Before he got off of the phone, he said, 'take good care of my grandchild.' Those were the last words I ever heard my father say; he died while helping in the rescue effort. My joy that my prayer of safety for my wife had been answered quickly became anger. I was angry at God, at my father, and at myself. I had gone for nearly two years blaming God for taking my father away. My son would never know his grandfather, my father had never accepted Christ, and I never got to say goodbye. Then something happened. About two months ago, I was sitting at home with my wife and my son, when there was a knock on the door. I looked at my wife, but I could tell she wasn't expecting anyone. I opened the door to a couple with a small child. The man looked at me and asked if my father's name was Jake Matthews. I told him it was. He quickly grabbed my hand and said, I never got the chance to meet your father, but it is an honor to meet his son.' He explained to me that his wife had worked in the World Trade Center and had been caught inside after the attack. She was pregnant and had been caught under debris. He then explained that my father had been the one to find his wife and free her. My eyes welled up with tears as I thought of my father giving his life for people like this. He then said, 'there is something else you need to know.' His wife then told me that as my father worked to free her, she talked to him and led him to Christ. I began sobbing at the news. Now I know that when I get to heaven, my father will be standing beside Jesus to welcome me, and that this family would be able to thank him themselves. When their baby boy was born, they named him Jacob Matthew in honor of the man who gave his life so that mother and baby could live." This story should help us to realize two things: First - that though it has been five years since the attacks, we should never let it become a mere tragic memory. And second - but most important - God is always in control. We may not see the reason behind things, and we may never know this side of heaven, but God is ALWAYS in control. Please take time to share this amazing story with those you love. You may never know the impact it may have on someone. God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called. Give thanks to the Lord for He is good. His love endures forever. Psalm 136:1 ---- ...YES God is In Control - - - WHEN we let Him be. I am sure there are many who died or lost loved ones that love God just as much as this man and his family. What is the difference? If you don't ASK AND BELIEVE God to keep you safe EVERY DAY, then you are in effect tying his hands to do so. He has the power and might as long as you want Him to intervene in your life, He will! AND WHEN it comes to the ones he has CHOSEN BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD to be HIS - You Better believe that all HELL Won't be able to Stop Him from Claiming His Own - What is God's SHALL ALWAYS BE GOD'S! Because if they don’t pump but they still drive, the are they not still using gas which will only cause a higher demand on gas come May 16th or 17th. See the problem? “Sales for the week would end up being perfectly normal, or very close to it. A meaningful boycott would entail participants actually consuming less fuel — and doing so in a sustained, disciplined fashion over a period of time — not just choosing to wait a day or two before filling up as usual.” Wouldn’t it be better (both economically and environmentally) for everyone to decide to carpool, take public transportation or walk/ride a bike everyday or at least once a week? Then you get to save on gas, help drive the market consumption down, make an improvement in the atmosphere and maybe get a little exercise. Or maybe we can look at moving into the city instead o further from our jobs helping lessen the time and gasoline it takes to commute to work. Second, there was no nationwide “gas out” in 1997. There was one in 1999, but it didn’t cause gas prices to drop 30 cents per gallon overnight. In fact, it didn’t cause them to drop at all. Despite the popularity of the email campaign, the event itself attracted scant participation and was completely ineffectual. . .. __..---/______//-----. (( ) .".--.```| - /.--. =: ( VROOM! )) (.: {} :__L______: {} :__; __--( __- -_= ) *--* *--* jnh Third, while Americans are still driving as they were, and in some cases more than they were, prior to the 2001-2007 gas increases; the higher cost in gasoline (which is primarily driven by the price of oil) is not effected as much by demand as it is by the drop in the value of the US dollar. As Jim Jubak said, “oil is priced in U.S. dollars, and the fall of the value of the dollar has led to a decline in the value of the dollars that the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries collects for its oil.“ So instead of taking one day to boycott gas stations, let’s look at ways to raise the value of the dollar. And how do you do that? 1. Travel at home rather than abroad. Spending money here instead of traveling to France and spending money there will help 2. Buy US made products. The more imports we buy from China, India, Mexico, etc, the more the value of our currency is affected. 3. Invest in American companies. So many people moved their investments out of American in 2004 looking for the higher interest rates elsewhere that dollar has continued to stayed weak. 4. Decide what you think about drilling for oil in American or looking for alternative fuel. Write your Senator and Congressman and let him or her know this is important to you, the value of the American dollar and the cost of gasoline. 5. Consider the cost of your tax cut. We all like more money in our pockets, but those great tax cuts that came just prior to the war contributed to a larger fiscal deficit that further weakened our currency. So if you are all for lower gas prices (as I most certainly am) take part in these acts which, while costing us more time and energy, have a better chance of producing results. SOUNDS SANE TO ME! A School Nurse wrote the info below -- good enough to share -- And it really works!! I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to remove a tick. This is great , because it works in those places where it's sometimes difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc. Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few seconds (15-20), the tick will come out on it's own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away. This technique has worked every time I've used it (and that was frequently), and it's much less traumatic for the patient and easier for me. Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be damaging in any way. I even had my doctor's wife call me for advice because she had one stuck to her back and she couldn't reach it with tweezers. Two candidates were equally qualified. While McKinley was still a Congressman, he had observed an inconsiderate action by one of the men. He recalled boarding a streetcar at the rush hour and getting the last vacant seat. Soon an elderly woman got on, carrying a heavy clothesbasket. No one got up to offer her a seat, so she walked the length of the car and stood in the aisle, hardly able to keep her balance as the vehicle swayed from side to side. One of the men McKinley was later to consider for ambassador was sitting next to where the woman was standing. Instead of getting up and helping her, he deliberately shifted his newspaper so it would look like he hadn't seen her. When McKinley noticed this, he walked down the aisle, graciously took her basket, and offered her his seat. The man was unaware that anyone was watching, but that one little act of selfishness would later deprive him of perhaps the crowning honor of his lifetime. -<>- ** Just Think About This ** Courage is contagious. Remember, it is not the burdens of life that weigh us down, it is how we handle them. --Unknown ---- "But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." It is better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have an opportunity and not be prepared. - Whitney Young, Jr. You are today where your thoughts have brought you; you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you. - James Allen It's best to start the discipline of generosity when the amounts are small. You measure yourself against yourself and nobody else. - Geoffrey Gaberino ---> Visit my CyberHome - ALWAYS OPEN HOUSEE :)Shangy! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/ Shangrala ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -->Bigham's Computer Rescue - PC Sales & Seervice You can trust us to provide you with quality computer sales and repair.
