I think I can finally talk about my disappointment. And no, it had nothing to do with what I saw on the red carpet (but seriously, whoever heard of a Roger Vivier tube clutch with a silver sequined Gucci gown?) Nor did my disappointment have to do with the hosts for the evening, even though I did find myself subconsciously humming "Thanks for the Memories" a few times during the evening. I was disappointed because my movie didn't win. Not "my movie" in the sense that I wrote, directed, produced, starred in or had anything to do with a movie that was up for an award (although I do have a great little Christmas story that could be made into a movie -- have your people call my people.) It was "my movie" because I saw it, I liked it and I wanted it to win. And it didn't. My movie was "True Grit." I thought it was terrific. Of course, I'm old enough to remember the John Wayne "True Grit," and I liked that version, too -- Glen Campbell notwithstanding. I like the story. I like imperfect good guys -- knights in dingy armor, so to speak. I can relate to that. I like it when the bad guys are clearly bad, and get what they have coming to them. I like justice that is neat, clean and uncomplicated by confusing realities. I like escaping in a darkened theater to a world in which a man with true grit can ride into the fray, reins in his mouth and rifles blazing, and take care of the problem. ANY problem. But mostly, I like grit (not to be confused with grits, for which I have never been able to acquire a taste.) I like the idea of grit. And I like people who have it. According to my dictionary, one who has grit -- true or otherwise -- has "firmness of character, an indomiitable spirit, pluck." These are excellent traits, even if they can sometimes get you into trouble -- just like they did with Rooster Cogbuurn. My wife, Anita, for example, is as firmly charactered and indomitably plucky as they come. Not too long ago she was riding mass transit with our eldest daughter, Amy, and her family to a concert in a nearby city. No sooner had the trip begun than a rather large and mostly inebriated gentleman sat next to her and began to talk to her. Loudly and obnoxiously. Unlike many of us who would be uncomfortable with that situation, Anita chatted pleasantly with the gentleman even though much of what he said was... well... relatively incomprehensible. Watching this conversation, Amy's husband, Brock, moved from his seat on the train to a standing position right behind Anita and the gentleman. I should mention here that Brock has served three tours of duty in Iraq. He can handle himself in a confrontational situation, if you know what I mean. And he was prepared to come to his mother- in-law's aid. But Anita gave him a look that let him know she was fine, and continued her conversation. At one point the man became agitated about something and started using harsh, vulgar language. Brock was about to intervene when Anita straightened up and faced her neighbor. "I don't like that kind of language," she said, looking him pluckily in the eye. "If you don't stop talking like that I'm going to move." Brock waited to see how the gentleman would respond, ready to... well, the "fill your hand!" scene in "True Grit" comes to mind. But the gentleman calmed down immediately. "I'm sorry," he said, firmly chastened. "I'll watch my mouth." Now, you might think that Anita was emboldened knowing that Brock was hovering nearby, just an eye patch away from doing a Cogburn on the man. But I've lived with this woman for nearly 34 years. She would have responded in the same way if she had been traveling alone. She's plucky. Indomitable. Spirited. Truly gritty. Hopefully you know someone like that. In fact, you very well may BE someone like that. If so, I salute you. In a world filled with vacillating morality and wavering will, we need more gritty, plucky people. Even if you don't win Academy Awards. -- Joseph Walker =================================================================== >-->From DevineHalowings: -=- (\ _ /) (`\(")/') (`/\') \\/^\// / \ hjw / \ `-._.-' Angel in Church This happened in 2005. I was 15 at the time, very religious, and had recently gotten extremely close with God. That summer I became more determined to follow Him. I also went to Vocation Bible Study every day, so I was in church for at least 7 hours per day for the 3 months of summer. I had learned many lessons, and had a lot of revelations in the month of August, alot of spiritual things that I didn't understand were being revealed and I was intrigued and interested in learning more. One Sunday morning, I was sitting in church during the Sunday school discussion. We usually have separate classes based on age group and then we all join together for a big discussion. The adults took up the right side of the church, the little children sat in the choir and the young people sat on the left side. Most of them had slowly disappeared to the back where they usually congregate until service but I stayed and listened to the discussion. All of a sudden in my right ear a voice said to me, "Are you going to be faithful unto God?" Intially hearing this, I thought that someone across the aisle said something. I look at him and he was reading his sunday school book. I looked to my left and there was no one in the row with me. Then the voice said again, "Are you going to faithful unto God?" I really began to look around seriously wondering if I'm the only one hearing this voice. I look at my pastor who seemed to be giving me a confused look. I guess he sensed my urgency. I was going to respond out of my mouth, but I knew that I would look extremely crazy. So I spoke in my mind, "of course I'm going to be faithful to God, I have no reason to be unfaithful..." I kept yabbing on. And the voice said again, "Are you going to be faithful unto God, or are you going to be like the others?" I responded, "The others, what do you mean the others?" and I looked at every single person in the church. I knew that some things were going on, but I didn't know to what extent. I became angry at the fact that these people come and worship every week and yet, they are not faithful. The whole day, the question continued to run through my mind. After church I decided to spend the evening at my cousins house and I was scared to tell anyone the experience I had, because I didn't want anyone to think I was crazy. When I went in the bathroom that evening, a million thoughts came through my head about the young people in my church, that we had to gird up our loins because we don't know what was going to happen and we have to stay strong in God. After that, everything stopped, all the questions and thoughts, and I had peace for the evening. That night we went back to church and had testimony service which is pretty much a combination of worship and in between you stand and give a testimony of a miracle or trial God has brought you through. That night I was determined NOT to say a testimony, for some reason I just didn't want to. I wanted to keep my mouth shut. The service went on until there were 2 people left standing to testify. The first was my best friend who stood and shouted Hallelujuah 3 times at the top of her lungs. I stood up after that because I felt the urge to say something. I was the last to testify and I said my usually greetings and I thanked God for bringing me through the week safely, then I paused and I heard myself exhale and say, "you know saints...". I knew that I was standing and I saw the people in the church and I heard my voice speaking, but I really didn't know what I was saying. I heard a few things like, "the young people need to stand strong for God because we don't know what's going to happen when school starts next week" Thats the only thing I really grasped but it was stressed alot that we need to stand firm for God because we don't know what's going to happen. I sat down and I began playing with my hands and just looking at them. The church was silent and I looked up and everyone was looking at me. I didn't know what was going on but my in-law which sat next to me whispered in my ear, "God just used you". I still didn't understand what went on because I didn't feel any different. I didn't feel weird. I live in Florida and that was the year Hurricanes Wilma, Ruth, Charlie, and Katrina swept through. I ended up tarrying that night and just praised and worshiped God I know I heard the voice of an angel, it wasn't the first time, and it sure won't be the last. She woke, reached for her husband, but her hand fell to the mattress. His side was empty. "Nothing to worry about." Mary thought. Jack sometimes fell asleep in his chair while watching television late at night. Mary brushed her teeth, headed to the kitchen to fix coffee and then strolled into the living room to wake her man. There he was, in his chair with the television still on. "Silly boy!" Mary laughed, reached to wake Jack and paused. Something was wrong. His normal snore was missing. Her fingers touched cold skin. "Oh Lord! Help me, Lord!" Mary ran to the phone, called 911 and raced back to her husband. She rolled him to the floor and began CPR. Mary's tears dripped onto his face, as she worked to revive the man who had been hers for many years. The paramedics arrived. They did their best, but it was too late. Jack was gone. The days of loneliness stretched out. At first it was OK. Friends and family called or visited, but soon they went back to their own lives. It was just Mary and her pets - a couple dogs and three cats. The cats sensed something was wrong, but went about their daily routines. They followed the sunny spot across the floor for warm naps, played with their toys, and chased each other around. The dogs were different. Evening came. They sat by the door at the time their master normally came home. It was their time. They'd hear the garage door open and greet him, when he walked through the door. The love he gave them! The playful scratches behind their ears they enjoyed so much. And when the day was done, they gathered around Jack's chair. He read or watched television. They curled at his feet and knew another day would come, another day to wait for their master, and get petted and loved. Month-after-month they sat by the door and waited. He never came. After a few hours, they'd give up and go sit by his chair. They had that at least. Mary gave them her love, but it wasn't the same. Their hearts all grieved for Jack. A year after Mary became "just one", she noticed the dogs no longer waited at the door. They moved on to other routines. It was then Mary realized, "The dogs don't expect him anymore. Why should I? It's time to move on. It's time to move forward." --Michael T. [Minor editing] Then the Pharisees and Scribes asked Him, "Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?" He answered and said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. and in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.' "For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men--the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do." Mark 7:5-8 I was speaking with someone the other day who used to take part in Bible studies. Although she did not tell me exactly why she is not presently involved in a Bible study, she did share with me an observation that I knew was at the root of her issue. She commented that people act a certain way in church but a different way outside of it. Obviously, she was bothered by the Christian's hypocritical behavior. Many of us look really good on the outside but are falling apart on the inside. In other words, we put on a good show. The problem is when we try to put on an act before the Lord. We honor Him with our lips but our hearts are far from Him. Jesus wants the truth of what is in our hearts, NOT how we portray ourselves on the outside. Clearly HE SEES the thoughts and intents of our hearts. The Pharisees kept the law and man's traditions to the strictest of standards. Their hands were ceremonially cleansed before they touched any bread to eat. Even their utensils were cleansed with the same ceremony. The outside looked spotless to the point that they believed themselves to be more spiritual and pure than those who did not perform these rituals. The same is true for people in the church today! Many Christians work hard at [seeming] righteous and looking the part to those around them, BUT God knows what is in their hearts. If our activities are whitewashed by man's traditions, then the fruit of that will be seen in our behaviors. There will be a lack of sincerity and realness with people. Not only does the Lord see through it, BUT so do others! Where is your heart today? Are you worshiping with your lips or with sincerity in your heart? Do not just keep going through the motions, whether in your ministry services, church activities or daily checklist of religious do's and don'ts. Get real with the Lord today. Be careful in following the traditions of man to the extent that the Lord is far from your heart. Pray that your outside will match your inside and ask the Lord to remove your fears about how real that might look. If we all would commit to this process, we might just see a lot more people in Bible studies and church. -<>- '===========================' | ~~ _|_ ~~ | | | | |_________________________|lc >Top Ways Not To Hear From God (Provided by The Father's Business) [Edited] 1. Take no time for margins in your life. Fill your life with so much activity that there is no room to be still ["Be still, and know that I am God" - Ps 46:10]. When we live in the tyranny of the urgent, we can be so busy that two-way conversation with God is not a priority. 2. Completely ignore the Person and work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit speaks words of truth and comfort and enables us to grow in spiritual awareness. By slighting His work and failing to rely on Him, we short-change our ability to hear from God. 3. Don't ask God any questions. People have questions, and they will look for the answers somewhere: psychics, self-help books, friends, talk-radio shows, the internet, etc. Only God is the source of eternal Truth. He is available for our questions, toll-free, unlimited access. 4. Insist that God must conform to your comfort zone. Be so comfortable that if God did speak, it would upset your status quo. Self-satisfaction kills our hunger to hear from God. So does lack of vision that there's more beyond where we are. When we are busy perpetuating a personal agenda, we will not hear the voice of God, especially if it means change. 5. Be religious. "Religion" is characterized by tunnel vision that thinks it has all the answers. Religion does not deepen us in the grace of God. Look at the Pharisees. They were preoccupied with keeping every jot and tittle of the law. Jesus called them whited sepulchres, full of dead men's bones. They kept a form of godliness and missed God walking among them. God calls us to cultivate a living relationship in intimacy with Him at all costs. 6. Be ignorant of the warfare. We must not see only the surface of things. We are not fighting flesh and blood but unseen spiritual battles (Eph 6:12-13). Paul instructed us not to wage war on the horizontal level as the world does. The informed and armed soldier overcomes everything that sets itself up against the righteousness, peace, and joy of the kingdom of God (2 Cor 10:3-5, Rom 14:17). 7. Be so exhausted that your physical, mental, and emotional fatigue cries out to be satisfied louder than the still, small voice of God. To hear from God, we must take adequate time off to get much-needed rest and refreshment. Burned out, we are no good to ourselves or anybody else, much less to God. 8. Respond to every need as if you are the only one who can fix it. Jesus did not respond to every need. From our people-pleasing natures, it is not easy to see that every need is not our call. Our valid call is only from God, not from the pleading voices around us. 9. Tolerate unconfessed sin in your life. The psalmist said, "If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened" (Ps 66:18). Our sin and flesh must not be allowed to dominate so loudly that they drown out God. We must draw near God with a clean conscience (Heb 10:22). Follow the example of Jesus, who often slipped away from the crowds to spend time with His loving Father! I constantly joke with my husband that both boys earn their red hair! Our house is constant commotion. There are always extra boys around. We live by their activity schedules. There's never enough food in the house and dirty laundry piles grow to the size of a mountain. Mornings are particularly stressful. More times than I can count I hear, "I'm not done yet" in the morning. None of us like getting up and dressed to leave by 7:00 a.m. weekday mornings. By the time we leave, I sometimes feel I've worked a full day. One morning was no exception. Tyler and Sam were very difficult to manage. No one had slept the night before Sam was sick. I couldn't wait to escape to work. My husband volunteered to stay home to take Sam to the doctor. As Tyler and I rushed out, late as usual, Sam followed us to the doorway. Waving good-bye he said, "I love you Mommy. Have a good day at school." His voice was so sweet I looked back. The sight of my little two-year-old, standing there in his pajamas waving that cute little chubby hand broke my heart. I ran back, gave him a big hug and told him Mommy loved him too. I'm a special education director. I spend days meeting with parents, testing students with disabilities and deciding what's best for them educationally. This day I was at the State School for the Severely Handicapped. The meeting was about a lengthy list of skills that the parents of a handicapped child in our district needed the state school to address with their child. As the meeting progressed, the teacher from the state school asked the parents, "If there was only one thing that we could teach your child this year, what is the most important thing you want your child to learn?" The dad, "Alex", spoke up, "We hope many things can be addressed. But if we could only pick one thing, we want our child to learn to sign 'I love you'. We have had six years of struggles and setbacks and have never had our child tell us 'I love you'. Right now that's the most important thing to us." I sat there in amazement. These parents had never heard those three simple words. Words I take for granted every day. I sat thinking back to that very morning, when Sam stood waving at me, telling me he loved me like I was the greatest person in the world. Suddenly, my hectic mornings, sleepless nights and boisterous boys were a real blessing. The answer both shocked and humbled me on what I have to be thankful for with my two redheads. Alex, we'll strive to teach your child to sign so you can hear "I love you". In the meantime, you've taught me a lesson I'll treasure always. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Archived InspiredBuffalo: ,,,, ,;) .';;;;', ;;,,_,-.-.,;;'_,|I\;;;/),,_ `';;/:|:);{ ;;;|| \;/ /;;;\__ L;/-';/ \;;\',/;\/;;;.') \ .:`''` - \;;'.__/;;;/ . _'-._ .'/ \ \;;;;;;/.'_7:. So, for that matter, does heroism. Some acts of heroism are larger-than-life. They take place on such a gigantic scale that they are almost impossible to comprehend. The heroic acts of the passengers on Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001, which resulted in the airliner crashing into the fields near Shanksville, Pa., instead of... well, whatever target terrorists had in mind... is an example of heroism on a grand scale. We read about it. We are inspired by it. We celebrate it. But we rarely experience it in a personal way that is meaningful and relevant to our everyday lives. But there are other acts of heroism that are smaller and more intimate, that happen almost every day in our lives. These are not the stuff of which feature films are made and to which impressive memorials are erected. But that doesn't make them any less heroic, especially not to those whose lives are affected by them. For example, I mourned last week with my friends in West Virginia for the 13 miners who were lost in the tragic Sago Mine disaster. That heartbreaking loss to families and communities is almost incalculable. But through all of the anguish and controversy, I was touched and inspired by the heroic act of several of the lost miners, who used their last breaths to write comforting words to their families and to the families of their fallen colleagues. "The notes said they weren't suffering, they were just going to sleep," said one victim's daughter, who added that the message in all the notes was clear: "Your dad didn't suffer." What sort of courage does that take? At a time when you would think that the natural human inclination would be toward self-protection and preservation, these men reached out with tenderness and compassion toward those whom they would leave behind. No, they weren't able to heroically conquer the physical obstacles that held them beneath the ground. But they were able to conquer the selfishness and narcissism that holds most of the world captive these days in order to give their loved ones the one thing that only they could give: peace. Larger- than-life? Maybe not. But heroic? Absolutely. Similar real-life heroism was exhibited, in my view, by a village police officer in upstate New York, who was running for the Town Board in last November's elections. In his political advertising, he mentioned his experience as a police officer and the fact that he had been awarded a "Medal of Honor" from village trustees for work he did at Ground Zero on Sept. 11, 2001. When a New York City officer lambasted the ad and said it "disgraced" the memory of his fellow New York City and Port Authority officers who lost their lives on Sept. 11, the upstate officer immediately pulled the ad and apologized, indicating that, even though he DID receive his village's "medal of honor" for his Sept. 11 service, "I would never dishonor the memories of those who fell or those who served on that day of days." But this apology wasn't enough for the New York City officer, who continued his attacks on the upstate officer. Now, I don't really know why the big city officer was so worked up over a town board election in a small village in upstate New York. I just know that the upstate officer handled the attacks with dignity, class and grace. I'm sure it was tempting to fight vitriol with vitriol and to question the "heroism" of so mean-spirited a bully. But he never did, not once. At a time when political rhetoric is often so angry and divisive, I find that kind of restraint refreshing, maybe even heroic. Not larger- than-life, just life-size. And sometimes that's best size of hero to be. He had an old rifle and three bullets. So, he decided that he would go out hunting and kill some wild game for dinner. As he went down the road, he saw a rabbit. He shot at the rabbit and missed it. The rabbit ran away. Then he saw a squirrel and fired a shot at the squirrel and missed it. The squirrel disappeared into a hole in a cottonwood tree. As he went further, he saw a large wild turkey up in a tree, but he had only one bullet remaining. A voice spoke to him and said, "Pray first, aim high and stay focused." However, at the same time, he saw a deer which would provide more meat than the turkey. He brought the gun down and aimed at the deer. But, then he saw a rattlesnake between his legs about to bite him, so he naturally brought the gun down further to shoot the rattlesnake. Still, the voice again said to him, "Pray first, aim high and stay focused." So, the man decided to listen to God's voice. He prayed, then aimed the gun high up in the tree, and shot the wild turkey. The bullet went into the turkey, deflected off a bone and hit the deer, killing it. When the gun fired, it knocked the man off balance, he stepped on the rattlesnake's head which killed it and fell backwards into a pond. When he stood up to look around, he had fish in all his pockets, a deer and a turkey with which to feed his family. The snake was dead simply because the man listened to God. Moral of the story: Keep God first and everything else will follow. Pray first before you do anything. Aim high in your goals, and stay focused on God. Never let people or things discourage you concerning your past. Do not look to man for your blessings, but look only to God. Have a blessed day everyone. -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment Smart Animals http://www.buffalosjokes.com/032911.htm Window Washer http://www.buffalosjokes.com/032912.htm Small Guy http://www.buffalosjokes.com/032913.htm Smile http://www.buffalosjokes.com/032914.htm Sneaky Water http://www.buffalosjokes.com/032915.htm Sports Bloopers http://www.buffalosjokes.com/032916.htm The Giver And The Gift http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/BibleStudy/givergift.html HERO http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/hero.html Dance! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/sdp.html Undersea Restaurant http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/undersea.html Amazing Horse Trainer http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/horsetrainer.html When Artists Get Bored http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/abored.html Dog Logic http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/doglogic.html Boeing 747 Suite http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/727suite.html Extreme Noodling http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/noodling.html Jasmine The Greyhound http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/jasmine.html Visit our site at http://www.inspiredbuffalo.com If you are looking to join any of our other fine e-zines visit www.buffalosjokes.com =============================================================== >-->From CupO'Cheer: >FIND YOUR PURPOSE – IT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE by Jane Powell ## _[]_ [____] .----' '----. .===| .==. |===. \ | /####\ | / / | \####/ | \ '===| `""` |===' .===| .==. |===. \ | /::::\ | / / | \::::/ | \ '===| `""` |===' .===| .==. |===. \ | /&&&&\ | / / | \&&&&/ | \ '===| `""` |===' jgs '--.______.--' “Have you reached your destination?” Many of us grow up not knowing what we want to do with our lives. It can take years to figure it out, and some never do. Many women change jobs, careers and husbands, searching for their purpose and destination. To achieve success in finding your way, soul-searching is a necessity. Have an honest conversation with yourself and answer a very tough question. “Who am I?” Think about your strengths, your weaknesses and most importantly your passions. It may take a day, a week or a month but, when you answer this question, your personal destination becomes clear. Can we hear from God? This question has been asked by countless people throughout the ages. Samuel heard the voice of God, but did not recognize it until he was instructed by Eli. (1 Samuel 3:1-10) Gideon had a physical revelation from God, and he still doubted what he had heard to the point of asking for a sign, not once, but three times. (Judges 6:17-22, 36-40) When we are listening for God's voice, how can we know that He is the one speaking? First of all, read. We have something that Gideon and Samuel did not. We have the complete Bible, the inspired Word of God, to read, study, and meditate on. "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteous- ness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17) When we have a question about a certain topic or decision in our lives, we should see what the Bible has to say about it. God will never lead us or direct us contrary to what He has taught or promised in His Word. (Titus 1:2) Second, recognize. To hear God's voice we must recognize it. Jesus said, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." (John 10:27) Those who hear God's voice are those who belong to Him, those who have been saved by His grace through faith in the Lord Jesus. These are the sheep who hear and recognize His voice, because they know Him as their Shepherd and they know His voice. If we are to recognize God's voice, we must belong to Him, and we must follow Him. Third, relate. We hear His voice when we spend time in prayer, Bible study, and quiet contemplation of His Word. The more time we spend intimately with God and His Word, the easier it is to recognize His voice and His leading in our lives. Employees at a bank are trained to recognize counterfeits by studying genuine money so closely that it is easy to spot a fake. We should be so familiar with God's Word that when God does speak to us or lead us, it is clear that it is God. God speaks to us so that we may understand truth. While God can speak audibly to people, He speaks primarily through His Word, and sometimes through the Holy Spirit to our consciences, through circumstances, and through other people. By applying what we hear to the truth of Scripture we can learn to recognize His voice! as seen in firstIMPRESSIONS -<>- __________________________________________/ -------------------------------------------| | | |~~~~~~~~~~| | | | | *| *|Bless this|* |* | | |_____|_____| ~Home~ |______|______|____| _________ _________ | `| "Sweep and mop! It can be rainy or cold, and the sun may already set by the time you get off work. So what are you going to do to get some exercise, especially if you don’t have a gym membership to rely on or want to stay healthy and exercise at home on a budget? Here are 10 ideas for ways you can exercise indoors at home for free or on the cheap. 1. Jump Rope My husband recently bought a jump rope, and I couldn’t help but laugh because it reminded me of elementary school. I always thought jump ropes were for little girls, but boy, was I wrong! About a minute into jumping rope, I was literally out of breath. I only made it a few minutes, and my calves were killing me the next day. If you want a good cardio workout in a matter of minutes, try a jump rope. 2. Stair Stepping Stair stepping is a great exercise to do in your home, even if you don’t have a set of stairs available. Find the biggest book you own (or a sturdy chair), put it in front of the TV, and step up and down while watching your favorite show. You may not work up a sweat like you would with a jump rope, but you will be keeping your body active and healthy. 3. The Plank If you don’t have a lot of time, but you want to build up your core muscles, this is the exercise for you. Get into a push-up position, but instead of bending your arms and moving down towards the floor, hold the position with your arms extended. Start off holding the position for 30 seconds, and add an additional 10 seconds every day. See how long you can go for – it’s definitely not easy! This is one of the most challenging exercises, but it’s also one of the of the best for your core. 4. Dancing In college, I lived in an apartment with a bunch of girls. We would get bored with normal workouts, so we started to have dance parties. Once a week, we picked out different music and just danced to our hearts’ content. Dancing is an excellent way to burn calories, and get your heart rate going while having fun. If you are in the privacy of your own home, there is no need to look like a pro or impress anyone. 5. Lunges I was in a workout class a few years ago, and one of the exercises was to do lunges down the hallway. Instead of stepping back into place, we would step forward, and we would continue until we made it all the way down the hallway and back. I could always feel the intense burn in my legs with this workout. You can do the same thing in your home. Try it whenever you go down the hall, or from room to room. If that gets too easy for you, hold weights in your hands to make the lunges more challenging. 6. Cleaning Cleaning can be very physical, especially vacuuming and mopping. If you are unable to go out one day to ride your bike or go for a run, set up a house cleaning schedule and clean your house instead You might as well kill two birds with one stone! 7. Water Bottle Weights If you are looking to do some arm, shoulder, and back strength training, you can make your own weights by filling up water bottles. If using water bottles becomes too easy, use milk jugs. You can tailor the exercise to your level by filling the jugs to the exact weight that you need. For a greater challenge, increase the water amount just a little bit each time you workout. 8. High Knees I really love running, so I tried to run in place in my home one day when the weather was bad. While it was great that I was able to keep my body active, running in place was very awkward. My heart rate did not get very high either. Instead of running in place, I’ve found that high knees can really get your heart pumping, especially if you go double time. To do this exercise, march in place or down a hall, and bring your knees as high as they can go. 9. Jumping Jacks This is another elementary school throwback, but it offers a great cardio workout. If you are watching a TV show, get up during the commercials and do a round of jumping jacks. 10. YouTube Workouts There are a lot of workout routines on YouTube. You can search “workout,” or you can search by the specific type of workout that you would like. This eliminates the need to use workout DVDs, and it allows you to mix up what you are doing to avoid boredom and lose weight fast. YouTube is also great if you want to do a traditional workout with push-ups, squats, and crunches, but are unsure on how to properly do these types of exercises. There are tons of videos that instruct you on how to use correct form as you exercise. Final Word I love working out at home because it takes very little preparation and zero driving. You can utilize these exercise tips when you’re stuck inside on a cold winter day. If you don’t want to workout at home, but the weather is not nice, head to your local mall and do some power walking. Or try to sneak a workout into your day by being cognizant of your activity level. (You know that but it bears repeating.) I've climbed misty mountains, swam dangerous rivers, hiked rocky trails, and wrestled grizzly bears. (Well, maybe not that last one yet.) And a few weeks ago, I bravely chopped down a huge pine tree. (Beverly was away and couldn't stop me.) Gale force winds of a night storm broke the trunk three feet from the ground. As we slept, the mighty pine fell directly toward the house, straight for our bedroom in fact. But an even taller sweetgum tree caught it in mid crash. There, precariously lodged, it waited its chance to smash through the roof. When I discovered this the next morning, I immediately thought of WWJD, which of course means, What Would Jerry Do? Many years ago, Jerry Oglesbee taught me everything I know about cutting down trees, most of which I've forgotten. Still, I was guided by my second thought – How hard could it be? The base had cracked most of the way through, so the leaning pine was still perched on top of a vertically straight trunk. My first thought was to take my heavy mallet axe and chop through so the tree would slide off the trunk and into the ground, providing more stability. It sounded good, so I went to chopping. Everything worked perfectly. I chopped. The bark flew. And the tree slid down ... forcefully ... making a surprisingly loud thundering noise as it fiercely jarred the ground, creating a bit of an earthquake. Apparently a 40 foot tree is much heavier than I'd remembered. (They don't look that way when they sway gently in the breeze.) Armed with a new respect for life, mainly mine, I forged on. My son, Matt, and I wrapped a rope around the tree and secured it to another, the idea being that if it prematurely dislodged from the sweetgum and headed toward the house, the rope would deny its treacherous intentions. I'm not sure why we thought that since the rope would most likely have snapped like a used piece of twine, but still, it made us feel better. I put my ladder next to the pine, climbed up with my chainsaw, and began to cut about 15 feet up the tree. My plan was to cut through so the larger portion would drop down, move out of the sweetgum and fall harmlessly across my backyard, missing the house by at least 10 feet. That's not exactly what happened. As I cut about half way through, the tree began to shift back along the cut. I removed the blade just before it pinned the saw. That clearly was not going to work, so I began to cut from the opposite side. I didn't get far before I heard the unmistakable sound of wood cracking. I pulled back and watched. The tree fell forward...toward the house...but then it cracked along the cut line. The shorter part fell flat against the ground with the rest of the tree standing straight up. The body of the sweetgum prevented it from moving any further forward, so naturally it fell back...toward me. But not exactly toward me. It fell swiftly just to my right (I can still feel the breeze as it passed) and, as it hit he ground, broke into five easily moveable pieces. Just as I planned... or would have if I'd thought about it. You know, it's amazing God would focus His attention on us. Just look at mankind. What superior beings we are. Why, surely we can do anything and figure it out all on our own. But then the winds shift. What was under control becomes too heavy to bear. And the world crashes in. Where are we then? Will He protect us or leave us alone with our pride? He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe. (Proverbs 28:26) Jesus...has become for us wisdom from God. (1 Corinthians 1:30) And Jesus said, I am with you always, to the very end of the age. (Matthew 28:20) Loved, protected, never alone. Feel special? You should. To God, you're awesome. LGB >1stPrizeWinner: MOOSE Shortly after I got married in 2003 we got a 6-week-old Chesapeake Bay retriever. Moose was our baby. In June 2008, the floods of Iowa destroyed our home with six feet of water and sludge. We moved in with my parents for 6 months while we rebuilt our home, which was hard on all of us - Moose included. He went from being the center of our attention to living in a 900-square foot home with 4 adults, 2 kids, 4 other dogs and 3 cats. Life was chaotic to say the least. Then, just a month after we moved back into our home, my marriage ended. Moose was by my side through all the tears. His companionship was everything to me at such a difficult time. It was just us two in our house in our now deserted and isolated neighborhood; we were one of the few who rebuilt our home after the floods. One late night I let Moose in from the back yard, but almost immediately he wanted back out. As I opened the door to the back yard, he barked like I had never heard before, and it instantly frightened me. I heard a man's voice yell, "Run!" and I realized that two men were in my backyard approaching my door. Frightened, I called the police, but even after they left, Moose wouldn't come in the house. He sat on the back steps like a protector, like he was daring the intruders to come back. Unbelievably, a week later the men tried again to break in the front door while I was sleeping, and thankfully, Moose again foiled their plan. His bark woke me up, and on adrenalin and instinct I dialed the police. Moose was so riled up and aggressive, he made the windows on the door rattle as he barked and charged at the men trying to break in. The police came, the men fled and Moose proved himself again as my bodyguard and protector. Through all this difficulty, Moose was my rock. He was there for me as a friend and protector through every part - the flood, the heartbreak and the intrusions. A few months after all the craziness calmed down, I became a foster parent, and this brings both Moose and I so much joy. We have had nearly 30 children stay with us, and Moose befriends every single one of them, no matter their age, from newborn to teenagers. I was hesitant at first to introduce the children to Moose, as I had no idea how he would respond to children; he'd never been around kids. But to my surprise and delight, Moose is now an integral part of the kids' welcoming and adjusting to our home. From the very first moment a child enters our door he does not leave their side! He even has a way of making children that are afraid of dogs (or simply afraid of him because of his intimidating size) feel at ease with him. He sleeps by their bed, kisses crying babies, follows kids to the bathroom in the middle of the night, gets in the tub with them when they are crying over their first bath in a new home, and even allows them to use him as a stepstool to get up on a bed, a couch, or a counter. Small children that can barely walk are able to walk him on his leash, because he instinctively slows down to their pace. I can't help but laugh when I see cars slowing down at the sight of a 20-pound kid walking a 130-pound dog! These children have experienced such trauma, disappointment, and cruelty from people they trusted, and Moose somehow gives them a feeling of security and safety that most of them have never experienced. It melts my heart when I hear a child whispering him their own story, fears or secrets. To most of them, he is the only one they have opened their hearts to in a very long time (if ever). They trust Moose with their stories, and because of this, it helps me get them the help and services they need. Moose is their first step in their healing process. I have since adopted three children out of foster care, and when my kids' adoptions were final, they were so elated to be Moose's family. I can't explain the natural bond he forms with the children as it is truly his gift! Moose continues to amaze me everyday, and I feel like the luckiest person in the world to have this Big Dog in my life everyday, making us laugh, taking care of us and simply enjoying our company. Moose is truly an amazing dog.
