When I arrived at my mom's, she told me she had "bad, bad news". Then she began to cry. She told me that she didn't want to make me wait, but didn't want to upset me before driving there. "It's our Andrew. He was killed in Iraq yesterday." The rest of the words, if there were any, are not something I can recall. I shook with fear, disbelief and severe grief. I cried and cried. This young, caring and brave young man, wanted nothing more than to serve our country ever since he carried his fatigue-clad teddy bear. I am still shaking my head in disbelief, crying stinging tears inside and out. It's just too surreal. This doesn't really happen, does it? He was finally himself -- our servant in the U.S. Army -- a paratrooper (like his Daddy and Uncle Eddie, two of his heroes) with the famed and proud 82nd Airborne. I am in shock. We all are. It's a horrible tragedy, and so quickly and very terribly final. Andrew was the nicest little boy. I babysat him and his sister Liz when they lived nearby. I changed his diapers. Now, there he was -- larger than life the last time I saw him home on leave. His hug was (as always) enormous and overflowing with love. "AJ" was a very deeply loving person. He was so happy to be home again telling us all about his buddies and the camp and we even traded stories about just how HOT Texas really is in the summertime. There is nothing in life that can prepare you for something so horrible. As I told my sis tonight, I had to listen to her cry so deeply and hurt so horribly I could only sit here, on the other end of the phone, and listen saying, "I know, I know." Sissy was his Godmother. Her world was shattered. She never wept like this, even when she had lost other family members, or lost everything she owned in a fire. He held a part of her heart that was his alone. Somehow though, because he was Andrew, it was like that for us all. All I feel like doing is crying and yet I forced my exhausted self to work some, to make a site visit and to try to make life push away this hurt, this pain. It hasn't helped, only to delay the inevitable. Our Andrew was such a good young man. He worked with a friend of mine some time ago while he was trying to find his path in life which led him to the Army. When he arrived home the first time, he had grown about a foot taller, and was enormous in mind and body. His pride swelled, not boastfully, but just enough to make his shoulder so square you could lay books on them. He held his head so high and handsomely -- displaying his beautiful and gentle smile and his warm and loving gaze. He had passed his Sergeant's exam, scoring a perfect 150 points. I have his latest picture in my kitchen -- a large one -- proudly displayed to all who come to my home. "My cousin," I tell everyone, "He's such a wonderful and strong guy. What a true patriot too. He had plans to enter Special Ops training and had been invited to pursue the Green Beret." That was his lifelong dream I believe. Until then, he served with honor and after spending time earlier last year in Afghanistan, he came back to North Carolina to train and pass the Sergeant test. I keep looking at the black and white photo mom has in her house. Then I look away while my heart aches and I lose some breath, whisper a Hail Mary and then I shake my head all over again. Nothing can touch this, nothing. From what I hear, he was in a Humvee with his troop buddies and they went into a canal. Most got out alive, but Andrew, and the driver of the Humvee, were lost. He died serving his country, being our Andrew -- helpful and brotherly towards others in his company. Of this we shall forever be grateful and proud. -- Jeannie Paslawsky ___________________________________________ We extend our sympathy to Jeannie and her family. This tragedy occured last October. [edited] We want to be served, and served with excellence. This is the mentality of the world. We are all caught up regarding our rights. We demand our rights. And if we don’t get our way, we get angry and boisterous. However, this not the way we should be if we love God. Jesus Christ came to serve man. He healed us, He fed us, He washed our feet, He prayed for us, and ultimately He died for us. Can you imagine that Jesus humbled himself to serve mankind? Jesus Christ came with a mission. His mission was to set us free from the bondages of hell here on earth and to provide us with eternal freedom in Him. Freedom came with a terrible price. Jesus had to die on the cross of Calvary to pay a debt. Our debt! He paid with His death so we can have a NEW LIFE in Christ. Not just a make-over, but a brand new beginning. He did not come to establish a church or religion. He came that we might have a direct relationship with God though Christ. He demonstrated this by teaching us the true way to love. To love as Jesus we put God and others first. To love like Jesus we look for ways to help and mend brokenness in people’s lives. True love is sacrificial. Jesus Christ, facing His death on the cross, did not even defend Himself. He did not complain. He didn’t say it was unfair. He knew that His Father was in control. Jesus gave his life willingly. He stated that it was unto this end (the cross) that He came so we might have an abundant life in Him. He rested in the love of His Father knowing that He completed His mission on earth. The next time you want to fight for your rights, look instead at how you might serve someone. Let Jesu be our example, not the world! --- ...Sweet! Thanks LouiseA! Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint." (Isaiah 40:27-31, NKJV) How do we deal with stress? Each of us deals with some sort of stress on a daily basis. At times, the stress is just a normal part of life as we seek to perform our jobs, household tasks and schoolwork. Sometimes, the normal stress of life becomes difficult to deal with. Extreme stress is caused by unresolved conflicts. In the passage above, the Israelites seem to have placed the blame for their problems on God. We do the same quite often. I find it funny when I hear someone say, "When all else fails, try God." Brothers and sisters, we need to be going to God first and sticking with Him. "But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." (Matthew 6:33-34) The Israelites would have experienced much less pain and trouble had they listened to God. They forgot how powerful He was. How often do we forget how powerful He is? Stress can be controlled and conquered as we realign our priorities and live out God's promises. In verse 29 of the above passage, we see that God gives power to the weak. In fact, in 2 Corinthians 12:9, we read that His strength is made perfect in our weakness. We need to realize God's power is greater than our own and recognize our weaknesses enable Him to show His awesome power to us. As we learn to control our stress by restructuring our lives with Jesus as our focus, we can rest in Him and He will renew our strength. (Is. 40:31). Look for God's action around you. If you truly look, you'll see Him watching over you, protecting you and loving you every day. Place God first in your life, above relationships, employment and entertainment, and He will give you more than enough strength to make it through life's adversities. --- ...Amen, Thanks LosuieA! ====================================================== >-->From Archives InspiredBuffalo: ()_()()_() / ..)(.. \ __/ ( || ) \_ (_/ * * (_) | | | || | | | \_/| \__/ | | > \ / <__,--,__|/|_> unknown >Kindness is Contagious Story Editor: by Phyllis Yearick My 9-year-old daughter and I were flying from our home in Charlotte, North Carolina, to spend a week with my husband in Miami, Florida. Mike had been in Florida for five months working for an Internet start-up company. We were excited about the trip because we had seen him only five times in five months, and Kallie missed her dad terribly. As usual on the Charlotte-to-Miami flight, the plane was totally full. I had noticed a troop of Boy Scouts at the gate and commented to my daughter that if anything happened, we would be OK with all those Scouts on our flight! Little did I know.... Because we did not get our boarding passes until we arrived at the gate, Kallie and I could not get seats together and were separated by the aisle. That wasn't such a big deal, except that Kallie was nervous about the trip and had counted on my reading to her the whole way. Trying to read across the aisle would be a challenge. When the two passengers who shared my row boarded the plane, I asked if they would switch places with Kallie and me, so that we could be together and so that she could sit next to the window. They refused, saying they thought they should stay in their assigned seats. Meanwhile, a mother and her three children were in a panic several rows ahead of us. There had been a mistake in their boarding passes, the whole family had been split up. The passengers in her row also refused to move elsewhere. The mother could hold her baby, but her 6-year-old son and his older brother had been scattered around the plane. She was very concerned about the younger boy sitting with strangers. She was in tears, yet nobody offered to help her. Suddenly the Scout leader stood up and said, "Ma'am, I think we can help you." He then spent five minutes rearranging his group so that adequate space was available for the family. The boys followed his directions cheerfully and without complaint, and the mother's relief was obvious. Kallie, however, was beginning to panic at the thought of not being next to a window or her mother. I told her that there wasn't anything I could do; we would have to sit where we were. Amazingly, the man sitting next to the Scoutmaster (not a Scout himself), turned around to me and asked, "Would you and your daughter like our seats?" referring to himself and the Scoutmaster. He said he was cramped in the window seat and would really prefer the aisle. We traded seats and continued our trip, very much relieved to be together and watch the scenery from Kallie's window seat. Would that man have offered us his seat if the Scouts hadn't done so for the mom and her children? I don't know. But I do know that kindness is contagious, and good deeds beget good deeds! -<>- >Butch O'Hare During the course of World War II, many people gained fame in one way or another. One man was Butch O'Hare. He was a fighter pilot assigned to an aircraft carrier in the Pacific. One time his entire squadron was assigned to fly a particular mission. After he was airborne, he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank. Because of this, he would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship. His flight leader told him to leave formation and return. As he was returning to the mother ship, he could see a squadron of Japanese Zeroes heading toward the fleet to attack. And with all the fighter planes gone, the fleet was almost defenseless. His was the only opportunity to distract and divert them. Single-handedly, he dove into the formation of Japanese planes and attacked them. The American fighter planes were rigged with cameras, so that as they flew and fought, pictures were taken so pilots could learn more about the terrain, enemy maneuvers, etc. Butch dove at them and shot until all his ammunition was gone, then he would dive and try to clip off a wing or tail or anything that would make the enemy planes unfit to fly. He did anything he could to keep them from reaching the American ships. Finally, the Japanese squadron took off in another direction, and Butch O' Hare and his fighter, both badly shot up, limped back to the carrier. He told his story, but not until the film from the camera on his plane was developed, did they realize the extent he really went to, to protect his fleet. He was recognized as a hero and given one of the nation's highest military honors. And as you may know, O'Hare Airport was named after him. Prior to this time in Chicago, there was a man called Easy Eddie. He was working for a man you've all heard about, Al Capone. Al Capone wasn't famous for anything heroic, but he was notorious for the murders he'd committed and the illegal thing's he'd done. Easy Eddie was Al Capone's lawyer and he was very good. In fact, because of his skill, he was able to keep Al Capone out of jail. To show his appreciation, Al Capone paid him very well. He not only earned big money, he would get extra things, like a residence that filled an entire Chicago city block. The house was fenced, and he had live-in help and all of the conveniences of the day. Easy Eddie had a son. He loved his son and gave him all the best things while he was growing up; clothes, cars, and a good education. And, because he loved his son he tried to teach him right from wrong. But one thing he couldn't give his son was a good name, and a good example. Easy Eddie decided that this was much more important than all the riches he had given him. So, he went to the authorities in order to rectify the wrong he had done. In order to tell the truth, it meant he must testify against Al Capone, and he knew that Al Capone would do his best to have him killed. But he wanted most of all to try to be an example and to do the best he could to give back to his son, a good name. So he testified. Within the year, he was shot and killed on a lonely street in Chicago. These sound like two unrelated stories, but Butch O'Hare was Easy - Eddie's son. -<>- ~~~ FIVE MEN MADE FIVE MISTAKES ~~~ One man struck a match to see if the gasoline tank in his car was empty. We were driving through a part of town where one sees drug users and dealers on the street. As we slowed for a traffic light my friend noticed a wallet lying open on the street near a parked car. She asked me to stop and as I did she jumped out and retrieved it. I expected her to hop back in so we could give it to the police, but she waved for me to park. Rolling down the window, I asked what she was doing, and she said, "There's ID in here -- maybe the owner is in one of these houses. But the address isn't on this street. Hmmm." Recognizing her determination, I feared Barb would start knocking on doors.... Doors sheltering people who were scared of strangers, drug dealers, and users -- many of them armed to balance their fears. I parallel parked. Barb had already knocked on a couple doors asking for the name on the ID, without disclosing what she wanted. The first door didn't open, the folks inside told her to go away. At the second door, no one answered. I caught up with her at the third door as it was opened slowly after a peek out through closed blinds. A young woman in faded but clean clothes opened it after seeing Barb's smile. Barb asked by name for the wallet's owner. A look of trepidation passed over the girl's face as she backed up a step. She called out. A young man in his early twenties with a puzzled look came towards us. Barb recognized the young man from the driver's license picture. She held out the wallet without a word, just a smile, and he took it, not quite understanding what was happening. The young girl said thank you and quickly closed the door. Halfway back to the car I was still scolding my friend for taking such chances. Then we heard yelling over the street noise. The young man was running toward us and waving. He was smiling, yet tears were running down his face. Before we knew it, he was hugging us both and saying thank you over and over. When he calmed a bit, he explained. He'd just been back to work for three weeks and his first paycheck was in his wallet. That paycheck was enough to move his wife and their 3-month-old baby to a small clean apartment, close to his job and out of the threatening area where they now lived. With a last big hug, and the last tears from all of us, the young man headed back to the house. We headed back to our car with smiles that lasted longer than most, and kept returning to our faces. My friend taught me that day that your fears are worth overcoming, for the benefit of others. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: .,,,. ... .,,,.
