It was a job that I really enjoyed because there was a lot of diversity -- filling in for staff, meeting with physicians to help promote programs for their patients, ordering new equipment, and general day to day problem solving. I was a jack of all trades, as most nurses are. However, I was soon to have one extra job on my agenda that particular day, which was above and beyond any nurses's imagination. The day started out like any other. When I got to the office there was the usual routine of assuring that the doctors' schedules had been posted and that there was sufficient staff to work with each one. Our medical clinic shared space with the oncology outpatients from our hospital and there was sometimes a squeeze for exam rooms. On this particular day, I was faced with more than exam room issues. I noticed some unusual paraphernalia in the halls that resembled television cameras. As I was walking through this maze of equipment, I was stopped by the oncology nurse manager who said she had an urgent request. After settling the patient I was attending to, I went back to see what she wanted. She informed me that the hospital was filming a public service commercial to let everyone know about our outstanding oncology program. They decided that it would be easier if they shot the commercial at the clinic, rather than the hospital. I said, "Well, I guess we will do our best to work around this and still be able to promote patient safety." Besides, we did have an unusually light schedule that day. Then she told me that the nurse who was originally slated to be part of the production had backed out at the last minute. She asked me if I would be kind enough to STAR as the nurse in the commercial. I don't quite remember my initial reaction, but I must have been dumbfounded! I was in our church drama group, but filming a commercial for national television was beyond my acting ability. I was quickly assured by the director of this production that my lines would be very few, and that unlike my live drama performances, we could easily do retakes. Duty called! How could I say no? I suddenly realized what I had done. What did I look like today? Had I known I was being filmed I would have had my hair done or worn my best uniform. Oh well, I guess they would just get the real me. After my initial shock subsided, I was introduced to a lovely lady who was a cancer survivor -- the real star of the show. We were told our lines, and introduced to the lights, cameras, and action. It was quite an exciting experience and an honor once the ball got rolling. As the normal work hours started to wind down, a few more members of the staff were recruited for scenes that required hallway activity. It was a long day for just a 60-seond commercial, but during the down time I was able to engage in conversation with this patient and her family. They were a tremendously fun group. It wasn't long before the commercial started to appear on television. It was great fun when I ran into a friend, who said she had been getting ready for work when she heard a familiar voice coming from her television. She couldn't believe who she saw when she looked at the screen. Or when my sister told me that my niece from California phoned her and said she saw a nurse on a commercial that looked and sounded just like her aunt. No, I never received fame or fortune, but did have an experience I will never forget. You just never know what may suddenly happen to you during an otherwise ordinary day. -- Annettee Budzban ___________________________________________ Annettee is a mother and grandmother and lives in Wildwood, Illinois. I am a mother of three (ages 14, 12, 3) and have recently completed my college degree. The last class I had to take was Sociology. The teacher was absolutely inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human being had been graced with. Her last project of the term was called, 'Smile.' The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their reactions. I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway. So, I thought this would be a piece of cake, Literally. Soon after we were assigned the project, my husband, youngest son, and I went out to McDonald's one crisp March morning. It was just our way of sharing special playtime with our son. We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away, and then even my husband did. I did not move an inch... An overwhelming feeling of panic welled up inside of me as I turned to see why they had moved. As I turned around I smelled a horrible 'dirty body' smell, and there standing behind me were two poor homeless men. As I looked down at the short gentleman, close to me, he was 'smiling'. His beautiful sky blue eyes were full of God's Light as he searched for acceptance. He said, 'Good day' as he counted the few coins he had been clutching. The second man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his friend. I realized the second man was mentally challenged and the blue-eyed gentleman was his salvation. I held my tears as I stood there with them. The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted. He said, 'Coffee is all Miss' because that was all they could afford. (If they wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up, they had to buy something. He just wanted to be warm). Then I really felt it - the compulsion was so great I almost reached out and embraced the little man with the blue eyes. That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my every action. I smiled and asked the young lady behind the counter to give me two more breakfast meals on a separate tray. I then walked around the corner to the table that the men had chosen as a resting spot. I put the tray on the table and laid my hand on the blue-eyed gentleman's cold hand. He looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, 'Thank you.' I leaned over, began to pat his hand and said, 'I did not do this for you.. God is here working through me to give you hope.' I started to cry as I walked away to join my husband and son... When I sat down my husband smiled at me and said, 'That is why God gave you to me, Honey, to give me hope.' We held hands for a moment and at that time, we knew that only because of the Grace that we had been given were we able to give. We are not church goers, but we are believers. That day showed me the pure Light of God's sweet love. I returned to college, on the last evening of class, with this story in hand. I turned in 'my project' and the instructor read it. Then she looked up at me and said, 'Can I share this?' I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class. She began to read and that is when I knew that we as human beings and being part of God share this need to heal people and to be healed. In my own way I had touched the people at McDonald's, my son, the instructor, and every soul that shared the classroom on the last night I spent as a college student. I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn: UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE. Much love and compassion is sent to each and every person who may read this and learn how to LOVE PEOPLE AND USE THINGS - NOT LOVE THINGS AND USE PEOPLE. Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart To handle yourself, use your head. To handle others, use your heart. God Gives every bird it's food, but He does not throw it into its nest. --- ...A Beautiful Classic! Even when severely tested, Mrs. Hokanson never lost her ready smile and triumphant faith. Casting her care on God, she found that He always took the burden and supplied the needed blessing. Mrs. Hokanson was the sole support for her mentally handicapped son. Eventually, chronic arthritis confined her to bed. When a church youth group went over to Mrs. Hokanson's house to cheer her up, they were amazed to discover that she was not the least depressed. They inquired, "Now what will you and Arthur do?" She gave her usual quiet, confident response, "The Lord will provide." When Mrs. Hokanson died, many people wondered what would happen to her son. But when friends and neighbors went home with Arthur after the funeral, he proudly showed them his collection of stamps. Instead of tearing the stamps off the envelopes, he had intercepted and kept scores of letters intended for his mother, and left them unopened. Many contained substantial gifts ~ enough to care for the boy for the rest of his life. Brothers and Sisters, throughout our lives we are blessed with spiritual experiences, some of which are very sacred and confidential, and others, although just as sacred, are meant to be shared. Last summer my family had a spiritual experience that has had a lasting and profound impact on us, one we feel must be shared. It’s a message of love. It’s a message of regaining perspective, and restoring proper balance and renewing priorities. In humility, I pray that I might, in relating this story, give you a gift my little son, Brian, gave our family one warm summer day last year. On July 22nd I was en route to Washington, D.C. for a business trip. It was all so very ordinary until we landed in Denver for a plane change. As I collected my belongings from the overhead bin, an announcement was made for Mr. Lloyd Glenn to see the United customer service representative immediately. I thought nothing of this until I reached the door to leave the plane and I heard a gentleman asking every male if they were Mr. Glenn. At this point I knew something was wrong and my heart sunk. When I got off the plane a solemn-faced young man came toward me and said, ‘Mr. Glenn, there has been an emergency at your home. I do not know what the emergency is, or who is involved, but I will take you to a phone so you can call the hospital. My heart was now pounding, but the will to be calm took over. Woodenly, I followed this stranger to a distant telephone where I called the number he gave me for the Mission Hospital. My call was put through to the trauma center where I learned that my three-year- old son had been trapped underneath the automatic garage door for several minutes, and that when my wife had found him, he was dead. CPR had been performed by a neighbor, who is a doctor, and the paramedics had continued that treatment as Brian was transported to the hospital. By the time of my call, Brian was revived and they believed he would live, but they did not know how much damage had been done to his brain, nor to his heart. They explained that the door had completely closed on his little sternum right over his heart. He had been severely crushed. After speaking with the medical staff, my wife informed me that our Bishop and hometeacher were there and were waiting for the doctors to give them the go ahead to administer to Brian. She sounded worried, but not hysterical, and I took comfort in her calmness. The return flight seemed to last forever, but finally I arrived at the hospital six hours after the garage door had come down. When I walked into the intensive care unit, nothing could have prepared me to see my little son laying so still on a great big bed with tubes and monitors everywhere. He was on a respirator. I glanced at my wife who stood and tried to give me a reassuring smile. It all seemed like a terrible dream. I was filled in on all the details and given the guarded prognosis. Brian was going to live, and the preliminary tests indicated that his heart was okay – two miracles, in and of themselves. But, only time would tell if his brain received any damage. Throughout these seemingly endless hours, my wife was calm. She told me that the Bishop had given a blessing so powerful and so reassuring that she felt that Brian would eventually be all right. I hung on to her words and faith like a lifeline. All that night and all the next day Brian remained unconscious. It seemed like forever since I had left for my business trip the day before. Finally, at two o’clock that afternoon, our son regained consciousness and sat up uttering the most beautiful words I have ever heard spoken. He said, ‘Daddy, hold me,’ as he reached for me with his little tiny arms. By the next day he was pronounced as having no neurological or physical deficits, and the story of his miraculous survival spread throughout the hospital. You cannot imagine our gratitude and joy. As we took Brian home we felt the unique reverence for life and love of our Heavenly Father that comes to those who brush death so closely. In the days that followed there was a special spirit about our home. Our two older children were much closer to their little brother. My wife and I were closer to each other, and all of us were very close as a whole family. Life took on a less stressful pace. Perspective seemed to be much more focused, and balance much easier to gain and maintain. We felt deeply blessed. Our gratitude was truly profound. Almost a month later to the day of the accident, Brian awoke from his afternoon nap and said, ‘Sit down, Mommy. I have something to tell you.’ At that time in his life, Brian usually spoke in small phrases, so to say such a large sentence surprised my wife. She sat down with him on the bed and he began this sacred and remarkable story. ‘Do you remember when I got stuck under the garage door? Well, it was so heavy and it hurt really bad. I called to you, but you couldn’t hear me. I started to cry, but then it hurt too bad. And then the ‘birdies’ came.’ ‘The ‘birdies’?’ my wife asked puzzled. ‘Yes,’ he replied. ‘The ‘birdies’ made a whooshing sound and flew into the garage. They took care of me.’ ‘They did?’ she asked. ‘Yes,’ he said. ‘One of the birdies came and got you. She came to tell you I got stuck under the door.’ A sweet and reverent feeling filled the room. The spirit was so strong and yet lighter than air. My wife realized that a three-year- old has no concept of death and spirits, so he was referring to the beings who came to help him from beyond the veil as ‘birdies’ because they were up in the air like birds that fly. ‘What did the ‘birdies’ look like?’ she asked. Brian answered, ‘They were so beautiful. They were dressed in white, all white. Some of them had on green and white, but some of them had on just white.’ My wife thought this was intriguing because Brian had no clue what the color green was. ‘Did they say anything?’ ‘Yes,’ he answered. ‘They told me the baby would be all right.’ ‘The baby?’ my wife asked, confused. And Brian answered, ‘Yes, the baby laying on the garage floor.’ He went on, ‘You came out and opened the garage door and ran to the baby. You told the baby to stay and not leave.’ My wife nearly collapsed upon hearing this, for she had indeed gone and knelt beside Brian’s body, and seeing his crushed chest and unrecognizable features, and knowing he was already dead, she looked up around her and whispered, ‘Don’t leave us, Brian; please stay if you can.’ As she listened to Brian telling her the words she had spoken, she realized that his spirit had left his body and was looking down from above on this little lifeless form. ‘Then what happened?’ she asked. ‘We went on a trip,’ he said, ‘far, far away.’ He grew agitated trying to say things he didn’t seem to have words for. My wife tried to calm and comfort him, and let him know it would be okay. He struggled with wanting to tell something that obviously was very important to him, but finding the words was so difficult. Finally, his eyes alighted on the picture of the Oakland temple that hangs in the room and he ran to it. ‘I went there!’ he shouted. ‘There, Mommy,’ he pointed to the temple. ‘And I went to other ones like this. There are lots of them. They are everywhere, and I went to some of them with the ‘birdies’. We flew so fast up in the air.’ To which my wife said, ‘That’s one of the temples.’ ‘YES! YES!’ he shouted. ‘I went to the temples.’ ‘They’re so pretty, Mommy,’ he added. ‘And there are lots and lots of ‘birdies’ in the temple. Lots of them are in cages and they want to get out, but they can’t by themselves. They need us to let them out of the cages. Mommy, I have to go to the temple and let them out. They are so sad and they need me to let them out. Mommy, you have to go there now and let them out. And Daddy too. And everyone. We have to let them out of their cages.’ My wife was stunned. Into her mind the sweet spirit enveloped her more soundly, but with an urgency she had never before known. She thought of the spirit world, the spirit prison to those who have not had saving ordinances done, and she knew that such spirits were relying on us to do these ordinances for them. She thought of how Brian had said some of the ‘birdies’ were wearing green and white, and the significance of that swept her with longing and understanding. Brian went on to tell her that the ‘birdies’ told him that he had to come back and tell everyone about the temples and the ‘birdies’ in their cages. He said they brought him back to the house and that a big fire truck, a little fire truck, and an ambulance were there. A man was bringing the baby out on a white bed and he tried to tell the man that the baby would be okay, but the man couldn’t hear him. He said the ‘birdies’ told him he had to go with the ambulance, but they would be near him. He said it was so pretty there and so peaceful, and he didn’t want to come back. And then the bright light came. He said the light was so bright and so warm, and he loved the bright light very much. Someone was in the bright light and put their arms around him and told him, ‘I love you, but you have to go back. You have to play baseball, tell everyone about the temples, and slay the alligators.’ Then the person in the bright light kissed him and waved bye-bye. Brian got in the ambulance with two of the ‘birdies’. The ambulance doors closed after the people got in, and he said, ‘Then I saw my beautiful, beautiful ‘birdies’ waving bye-bye. Then whoosh, the big sound came and they went into the clouds.’ The story went on for over an hour. He taught us that the ‘birdies’ are always with us, but we don’t see them because we look with our eyes, and we don’t hear them because we listen with our ears. But, they are there, and you can only see them in here (he put his hand over his heart). They whisper the things to help us do what’s right because they love us so much. Brian continued, stating, ‘I have a plan, Mommy. You have a plan. Daddy has a plan. Everyone has a plan. We all must live our plan and keep our promises. And the ‘birdies’ help us do that ’cause they love us so, so much.’ In the weeks that followed, he often came to us and told all, or part it again and again. Always the story remained the same. The details were never changed or out of order. A few time he added further bits of information that clarified the message he had already delivered. It never ceased to amaze us how he could tell such detail and speak beyond his ability when he spoke of his ‘birdies.’ Everywhere he went, he told total strangers that they had to go to the temple. Surprisingly, no one ever looked at him strangely when he did this. Rather, they always got a softened look on their face and smiled. Needless to say, we have not been the same ever since that day, and I pray that we never will be. My wife and I have gone to the temple repeatedly since then, and always Brian is waiting to hear how many ‘birdies’ we set free each time we go. Brothers and Sisters, of all the messages Brian could have brought back, he brought this one — We must go to the temple and free the ‘birdies.’ I testify that the things I have shared with you today are true. They are of sacred worth. They are of eternal consequence to us all and to the spirits who await the work only we can do for them. May we all go to the temple and free the ‘birdies’ — for this truly is the Lord’s work and His glory, to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. This was sent to me by a close friend, I had to pass it on. xxxxxxxx 1. Today, I interviewed my grandmother for part of a research paper I'm working on for my psychology class. When I asked her to define success in her own words, she said, "Success is when you look back at your life and the memories make you smile." 2. Today, I asked my mentor - a very successful business man in his 70s - what his top three tips are for success. He smiled and said, "Read something no one else is reading, think something no one else is thinking, and do something no one else is doing." 3. Today, after a 72-hour shift at the fire station, a woman ran up to me at the grocery store and gave me a hug. When I tensed up, she realized I didn't recognize her. She let go with tears of joy in her eyes and the most sincere smile and said, "On 9-11-2001, you carried me out of the World Trade Center." 4. Today, after I watched my dog get run over by a car, I sat on the side of the road holding him, crying. And just before he died, he licked the tears off my face. 5. Today at 7 a.m., I woke up feeling ill, but decided I needed the money, so I went into work. At 3 p.m., I got laid off. On my drive home I got a flat tire. When I went into the trunk for the spare, it was flat too. A man in a BMW pulled over, gave me a ride, we chatted and then he offered me a job. I start tomorrow. 6. Today, as my father, three brothers and two sisters stood around my mother's hospital bed, my mother uttered her last coherent words before she died. She simply said, "I feel so loved right now. We should have gotten together like this more often." 7. Today, I kissed my dad on the forehead as he passed away in a small hospital bed. About five seconds after he passed, I realized it was the first time I had given him a kiss since I was a little boy. 8. Today, in the cutest voice, my 8-year-old daughter asked me to start recycling. I chuckled and asked, "Why?" She replied, "So you can help me save the planet." I chuckled again and asked, "And why do you want to save the planet?" Because that's where I keep all my stuff," she said. 9. Today, when I witnessed a 27-year-old breast cancer patient laughing hysterically at her 2-year old daughter's antics, I suddenly realized that I need to stop complaining about my life and start celebrating it again. 10. Today, a boy in a wheelchair saw me desperately struggling on crutches with my broken leg and offered to carry my backpack and books for me. He helped me all the way across campus to my class and as he was leaving he said, "I hope you feel better soon." 11. Today, I was feeling down, because the results of a biopsy came back malignant. When I got home, I opened an e-mail that said, "Thinking of you today. If you need me, I'm a phone call away." It was from a high school friend I hadn't seen in 10 years. 12. Today, I was traveling in Kenya and I met a refugee from Zimbabwe. He said he hadn't eaten anything in over three days, and looked extremely skinny and unhealthy. Then my friend offered him the rest of the sandwich he was eating. The first thing the man said was, "We can share it." It was hot and dry in the summer, surrounding agricultural farms were supported by gravity-fed irrigation water from the Cascade Mountains. It was cold with crunchy snow underfoot in winter, with definite spring and fall. It was the mid 1970s. There was a college they're, since upgraded to Central Washington University. I ran with a creative crowd, mostly attending the college. We also socialized with a few younger college professors, including from the Ethnic Studies and Sociology Departments. Some of my friends took modern dance classes and gave performances. One friend owned a bicycle shop downtown. Once I purchased a bicycle there with a guarantee tag stating, "15 minutes or 15 centimeters, whichever comes first". Some of our friends had grown up locally, so we had ties to local farming families. Heck, in small towns, you're tied to almost everybody, almost every institution. That's the beauty of small town life. It fosters deep relationships because you see people often -- and also fosters diversity of relationships. Since people "just like you" are few, most people have diverse friendships. One gal I met was Diane. She was getting a degree in Elementary Education. We knew each other a little -- our social circles overlapped, but saw each other rarely. Diane once borrowed a book: "The Golden Egg Book" by Margaret Wise Brown and Leonard Weisgard. It was a talisman book from my childhood, with gorgeous, elaborate illustrations, and a poignant story about a lonely bunny who finds friendship. My parents had read that book so many times to myself and my siblings, the cover was tattered. The book was magical to me, cherished for its precious memories. One day there was a knock at my door. Diane said, "I'm moving to California, and I'm returning "The Golden Egg Book". I really like it, and I knew I could take it with me, because I knew you'd have forgotten who had it, all these months later. I kept feeling too busy packing to take the time to bring it over. But I didn't want to do that, because I knew how much it meant to you. So, here it is." I still tear up every time I tell this story. I'd spent hours listening to lectures about morality, why it's imperative to do the right thing. But that one small event changed my life. It demonstrated what living a moral life is, that it involves sacrifice at inconvenient times. When I'm faced with everyday moral choices, I know what I have to do. I have to make the kind of choice Diane did, so I can live with my own conscience, and so the other person feels the relief I did. Thanks to Diane, my own children were able to sink into that magical story, gaze at the mesmerizing illustrations, and turn the pages of the very same "Golden Egg Book". =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Our Friend Fran :) >You could have heard a pin drop Once upon a time when our politicians did not tend to apologize for our country's prior actions, here's a refresher on how some of our former patriots handled negative comments about our great country. ********************* JFK'S Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, was in France in the early 60's when DeGaulle decided to pull out of NATO. New Castle, Pennsylvania's Jerry Brown Jr. dismissed an 89-year-old woman when he stole her friend's purse. His was also a big mistake. Now it's true, this lady didn't have David's sling and three, smooth stones taken from a riverbed. On the other hand, she did have her cane. Stones or cane, both can come in handy when bringing down a bad guy. This lady rather than standing there looking all frail and helpless gave a whack to Brown's getaway car. She gave it such a whack she scratched the paint and left a dent in the vehicle. Between the dent, the scratch and the description of the robbers, the New Castle police were soon able to arrest Brown and an accomplice, Tatiana Vargas. Over the years I've noticed the forces of evil tend to dismiss and discount God's people. We don't look like much; we don't sport halos like the saints do in the artists' depictions and most of us don't perform miracles. Even so, God's people, the young and old, the weak and the frail can accomplish great things when they put their trust in the Lord. According to Scripture, it was in the Lord -- not those stones -- that David placed his trust. Indeed, he said as much to Goliath when he shouted, "You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the Name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied." Now I don't know which evil giant is coming against you. I don't know what force of evil is going to try and intimidate you, frighten, bully and terrorize you. I do know that when you stand by the side of the Lord, you need not be afraid. Indeed, as St. Paul said, it is because of the crucified and risen Savior's victory that the Lord's saved people are "... more than conquerors through Him who loved us" (Romans 8:37b). Even when they're up against Goliaths. THE PRAYER: "Dear Lord, God of grace, today I give thanks. All around me there are forces of evil. They would undermine my faith and paralyze me into inaction. May I, trusting in the presence and power of the your holy spirit, move forward in faith. May I give to all a witness that in Christ, God's people are conquerors. In the Savior's Name. Amen." They laughed and thought he was just a big joke. But he counted on his faith in God and his love for America's people and his desire to restore America back to being great again. And of course, by the Grace of God, his hard work and not giving up against all odds, like David, God enabled him to prevail. Now his battle continues as the left throws more Goliaths at him to destroy his heart and ability to make America Great Again!
