Fresh out of school, he went to work At the local KFC Frying chicken, working hard The way that it should be. One day he asked a sweet little lady Who worked there just for fun, Do you know any nice girls? She said, "No, not one. But one day that little lady's daughter Decided to stop by, And that lovely blond daughter Caught that Carolina boy's eye. The lovely daughter had two little girls And a cozy little home, But due to circumstances The lady was alone. So the Carolina boy Asked the lady for a date I guess the rest is history Or you could call it fate. The two of them got married And began a brand new life The Carolina boy now had two daughters And a lovely new wife. Things weren't always perfect As every family knows You have your share of ups and downs You have your grief and woes. Through it all, looking back I can say with a happy smile The memories we made along the way Were worth every mile. Of all the gifts life has given me And all the treasures I have had One of the greatest is the Carolina boy, That I proudly call my Dad. All my love, Traci (your big girl) -- Traci Walker The Story Behind the Poem, My Daddy: When I was seven years old and my younger sister was only four, our father was tragically killed in an automobile accident just two weeks after his twenty-seventh birthday. Mom was devastated and although we were really too young to understand what was going on, somehow I knew life would never be quite the same. After about a year, my mom's friends thought she should start dating and hopefully meet someone to fill the void in her life. Although mom was young and beautiful and certainly desirable, she was more interested in her girls and making sure our life was as comfortable as possible. We had a nice home, plenty of what we needed and all the love you could ask for, but we sure missed our father. Mom was lonely too, so just about every evening we would go to our grandparent's house for a visit. My grandmother, Nanny as we called her, had begun working part time at Kentucky Fried Chicken. Her boss was a nice young man named Charles who had recently moved to Tennessee from North Carolina where he was fresh out of college. His older brother had purchased two Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises and Charles was managing one of them. One day he asked Nanny if she knew any nice girls, to which she replied, "No, not a one!" We still laugh about her statement to this day! Mom, my sister and I decided to eat dinner at Kentucky Fried Chicken one evening and when Charles met my mom, he was interested in getting to know her better. To make a long story short, the two of them dated for a few months and decided to get married. My sister and I were so excited that we were getting a daddy. They had a quiet ceremony and we all went to the Smoky Mountains on a honeymoon. That was just the beginning of 32 very wonderful years for us. We were never called or considered "step" children, but we were his girls from day one. My mother was a queen and we were princesses. Daddy soon left Kentucky Fried Chicken and became a banker, which he did for 28 years before retiring in November 2003. He was a very loved and respected member of our community, a deacon at our church and a man that we were so proud to call our Daddy. He was passionate about his relationship with God, his love for his family and was an avid golfer. On October 29, 2004, we received news that would forever change our lives. Daddy had cancer. He had been living with Parkinson's for over ten years and dealt with it head on just like everything else. He seldom complained and was determined to squeeze as much out of life as possible. The treatments did not work and as a result we knew our time was running out. I have never experienced such overwhelming agony as I did seeing my Daddy suffer and wilt away. I have also never seen such courage demonstrated as I did as he bravely faced his destiny with as much humor and determination as he could muster. I will never forgot the day I was spending the morning with him and he had gotten violently ill. Mom and I were sitting outside the bathroom in case he needed assistance. All of the sudden he began singing, "Just A Closer Walk With Thee." That was such an inspiration to me that even though he was facing death, he still had a song in his heart. Daddy went home to heaven seven weeks to the day that he was diagnosed, so on December 17, 2004, I said goodbye to a man that was more than a father -- he was my daddy, not by blood, but by love and God's plan. I wrote the poem one week before he passed away and he loved it! ========================================================== >-->Story Time From Our Friend Geniann :) __ o / |/ _/___|___________ / _______ __\ _______ / /_o_||__| | \_\_\_\______________________/___ | \ \____________|______________ \ || | \ +_||_+ () () () ____| \ | \ _ ,, _ / ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ \_.=" )" "-._____,' ";__________________ /_^^^^^^^^ ^^^^ ^^^^ \__|==% ^^ ^^ ^^^^^^^^ ^^^^ ^^^ ^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^ ^ ^^^^ ^^^ ^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^ ^^ ^^^^^ Sabian@pacbell.net >Old Eddie It happens every Friday evening, almost without fail, when the sun resembles a giant orange and is starting to dip into the blue ocean. Old Ed comes strolling along the beach to his favorite pier. Clutched in his bony hand is a bucket of shrimp. Ed walks out to the end of the pier, where it seems he almost has the world to himself. The glow of the sun is a golden bronze now. Everybody's gone, except for a few joggers on the beach. Standing out on the end of the pier, Ed is alone with his thoughts....and his bucket of shrimp. Before long, however, he is no longer alone. Up in the sky a thousand white dots come screeching and squawking, winging their way toward that lanky frame standing there on the end of the pier. Before long, dozens of seagulls have enveloped him, their wings fluttering and flapping wildly. Ed stands there tossing shrimp to the hungry birds. As he does, if you listen closely, you can hear him say with a smile, 'Thank you. Thank you.' In a few short minutes the bucket is empty. But Ed doesn't leave. He stands there lost in thought, as though transported to another time and place. Invariably, one of the gulls lands on his sea-bleached, weather- beaten hat - an old military hat he's been wearing for years. When he finally turns around and begins to walk back toward the beach, a few of the birds hop along the pier with him until he gets to the stairs, and then they, too, fly away. And old Ed quietly makes his way down to the end of the beach and on home. If you were sitting there on the pier with your fishing line in the water, Ed might seem like 'a funny old duck,' as my dad used to say. Or, 'a guy that's a sandwich shy of a picnic,' as my kids might say. To onlookers, he's just another old codger, lost in his own weird world, feeding the seagulls with a bucket full of shrimp. To the onlooker, rituals can look either very strange or very empty. They can seem altogether unimportant....maybe even a lot of nonsense. Old folks often do strange things, at least in the eyes of Boomers and Busters. Most of them would probably write Old Ed off, down there in Florida. That's too bad. They'd do well to know him better. His full name: Eddie Rickenbacker. He was a famous hero back in World War II. On one of his flying missions across the Pacific, he and his seven-member crew went down. Miraculously, all of the men survived, crawled out of their plane, and climbed into a life raft. Captain Rickenbacker and his crew floated for days on the rough waters of the Pacific. They fought the sun. They fought sharks. Most of all, they fought hunger. By the eighth day their rations ran out. No food. No water. They were hundreds of miles from land and no one knew where they were. They needed a miracle. That afternoon they had a simple devotional service and prayed for a miracle. They tried to nap. Eddie leaned back and pulled his military cap over his nose. Time dragged. All he could hear was the slap of the waves against the raft. Suddenly, Eddie felt something land on the top of his cap. It was a seagull! Old Ed would later describe how he sat perfectly still, planning his next move. With a flash of his hand and a squawk from the gull, he managed to grab it and wring its neck. He tore the feathers off, and he and his starving crew made a meal - a very slight meal for eight men - of it. Then they used the intestines for bait. With it, they caught fish, which gave them food and more bait......and the cycle continued. With that simple survival technique, they were able to endure the rigors of the sea until they were found and rescued. (after 24 days at sea...) Eddie Rickenbacker lived many years beyond that ordeal, but he never forgot the sacrifice of that first lifesaving seagull. And he never stopped saying, 'Thank you.' That's why almost every Friday night he would walk to the end of the pier with a bucket full of shrimp and a heart full of gratitude. (Max Lucado, In The Eye of the Storm, pp.221, 225-226) PS: Eddie was also an Ace in WW I and started Eastern Airlines. The Truth: The story about the plane crash and the seagull landing on the head of Eddie Rickebacker is true, according to the autobiography of Eddie Rickenbacker. The story of the man feeding the seagulls in the eRumor came from excerpt from a book by popular minister and inspirational author Max Lucado. The version circulating on the Internet contains details that did not appear in Lucado's book titled "In the Eye of the Storm." Rickenbacker was a pilot and a hero during WW I who became an ace and was presented with The Medal of Honor. The crash at sea took place in 1942 when he was sent by the U.S. government on a tour of the Pacific theater. The four-engine B-17 bomber on which he was a passenger went off course and ran out of fuel at sea. He went on to be a race car driver, an aviation consultant, and airline executive. Rickenbacker was not the founder of Eastern Airlines but was very influential in the General Motors acquisition of Eastern Air Transport, a compilation of North American Aviation and Pitcairn Aviation Company that was owned by Clement Keys. When General Motors acquired the company from Keys they renamed it to Eastern Air Lines. In January of 1934 Rickenbacker began his term general manager for Eastern Air Lines and later served also as the company's president. Now you have the full story! I'll throw the darts and you say, `Wonderful!'" Here is a boy who was not afraid to ask for the encouragement he needs. Maybe we all have something to learn from him! Inspirational author and educator, Fr. Brian Cavanaugh, relates a story about the devastating effects of discouragement. Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the famous 19th Century poet and artist, was once approached by an elderly man who asked him to look at a few of his sketches and drawings. The gentleman wanted to know if the artist thought they were of any value. As gently as possible, Rossetti told the man that the sketches were of no value and showed little talent. He apologized for the harsh assessment but said that he believed he should be honest. The visitor was disappointed but asked the artist if he could take a look at just a few more, which were all done by a young art student. Rossetti looked over the second batch of sketches and immediately became enthusiastic over the talent they revealed. "These," he said, "oh, these are good." He went on to say that the young student shows much promise and should be given every help and encouragement, as he may have a great future if he will study and work hard. The old man was deeply moved. Rossetti asked, "Who is this fine, young artist? Your son?" "No," replied the visitor sadly. "It is I - forty years ago. If only I had heard your praise then. For you see, I became discouraged and gave up too soon." Mother Teresa wisely said, "Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless." Mazzella I believe in guardian angels. Since I was a boy I have felt watched over, loved, and protected by my unseen friends and I am so thankful to God for them. I have had far too many near misses with hurt and harm over the years for it to be mere luck. I guess my guardian angels are keeping me around for a reason and I will do my best not to make their work too hard in the future. I also believe in guardian angels because I have seen one in action over the years. My oldest son graduates from high school this Spring. Through all of his years in school he has struggled with Autism. It has made it difficult for him to learn, to relate to others, and to function in this world. Thankfully, though, he has had a guardian angel with him every step of the way. His aide has been there with him through all the difficulties, through all the triumphs, through all the pains, and through all the joys. She was there when he first started to speak in sentences. She was there when he first started to read. She was there when he first started to make friends and play with the other children. She helped him through every frustration he faced and comforted him through every bit of sadness he had to endure. She helped him to become the happy and loving soul that he is today. She loved him, cared for him, guided him, encouraged him, and watched over him. She has been his aide, his friend, his second mother, and his guardian angel. Words can never express all the good that she has done for him. All I can say to her is "Thank you so much for being such an angel in my son’s life." There are many guardian angels in our lives. Some are unseen, but some walk with us and help us everyday. Take the time then to thank God for all the guardian angels in this world. Take the time as well to thank all the guardian angels that touch your own life. But most of all take the time to be a loving, joyous guardian angel yourself to every hurting heart that needs you. -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment: Are Angels Real? http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/BibleStudy/angelsreal.html Hot Air Balloons http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/hotair.html Fishing In Florida http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/fishing.html Nanny Animals 2 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/nannyanimals2.html Hand Painting 2 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/hpaint2.html Lilly And Madison http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/greatdanes.html Amazing Trivia Facts http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/triviafacts.html Arrows Across America http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/arrows.html -<>- >From Our Friend Geniann :) WHERE ALL THE OLD WRENCHES GO We have this one here... He was my senior school music teacher in the late 60s and early 70s, when I attended school in Essex, UK, outside of London. Mr Howarth had a very bad cleft palate, and when he was born in the 1920s the corrective surgery we now take for granted wasn't available. As a result, his speech was badly affected. Did this impact his teaching, with children constantly asking him to repeat things and mocking him behind his back? Not at all. His love of music and energetic baton work enthused everyone he taught. The orchestra tried not to giggle whilst following his expressive direction. He encouraged even the most non-musical of students. His love of music was so infectious he got many pupils to join the choir, band, and orchestra -- though they would never have thought of joining on their own. He showed by example the best way to overcome a handicap -- carry on regardless, and rise above it. He had trouble remembering pupil names, so if he didn't know your name he had a solution. He called all the boys "Archibald" and all the girls "Alice." It made for hilarious lessons when he shouted, "Archibald! Pay attention!" with his pronounced lisp, even though the child in question had no idea the remark was aimed at him. Once we rehearsed for a school concert on a stage made of hollow moveable blocks, a school staple in the UK. There were a lot of solo acts and choir performances in between the orchestral and band pieces, so there was a lot of pupil movement on the temporary stage. Mr Howarth was insistent that we didn't jump up and down on the blocks as it could be dangerous. He was not a small man and he made the mistake of demonstrating what we were not to do. One of his energetic jumps resulted in him going through the block, up to his thighs in broken wood. Luckily, apart from bruising his dignity (and probably his legs) he was unhurt. Mr Howarth was so loved that when he retired in the 80s, after over 40 years of teaching, many former pupils returned for a surprise farewell concert in his honour. He was moved to tears when he realised he had affected so many generations of pupils. We played all his favourite pieces, and I don't think there was a dry eye in the house when we played "Land of Hope and Glory", a rousing tune well known in the UK. I had many good teachers, but Mr Howarth was head and shoulders above the rest, and will always be an inspiration to me. I feel privileged to have known and been taught by him. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: _ _(_)_ wWWWw _ @@@@ (_)@(_) vVVVv _ @@@@ (___) _(_)_ @@@@ @@()@@ wWWWw (_)\ (___) _(_)_ @@()@@ Y (_)@(_) @@()@@ wWWWw @@@@ (___) `|/ Y (_)@(_) @@@@ \|/ (_)\ @@@@ (___) / Y \| \|/ /(_) \| |/ | / Y \ | \ |/ | / \ | / \|/ |/ \| \|/\ | \ |/ jgs|// \\|/// \\\|//\\\|///\|/// \\\|// \\|// \\\|// |// \\|/// ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ >THE FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY Tim, the father of three, was lying on the sofa, exhausted after a hard day's work and taking it easy because he had hurt his knee.
