The best-dressed high school students had AT LEAST one each, and we all wore them proudly. After all, war was dirty business, and we were doing our part... by remembering. We were wearing bracelets that had the name and rank of a soldier Missing In Action or who was captured and kept as a Prisoner of War. Our bracelets told which country the soldier represented, as well. They listed where the soldier was stationed when he disappeared and his home state. There was information concerning his last-known address, so if you wanted to, you could send a note to the family, telling them that you had their son's name on your bracelet, and that you'd never forget him. That was the idea, after all -- to wear the bracelet until he came home, or simply to always remember him. I had every intention of writing to the parents of "my guy," but every effort was interrupted by important things thinks like pajama parties, dances, pep rallies, bicycle trips and county fairs. Things like summer camp, tree climbing, book reading and birthday parties. I would remember to write later. I promised myself at least weekly for a number of months that I'd write to his parents, yet never seemed to have the time or the postage stamp. There were no home computers or email messages back then. I would remember next week after final exams. Yes, I'd remember next week. This was important stuff, and I'd remember. We started choosing colleges. I wanted to find a husband and start a family. Sue was going to be a chemist. Cliff was going to be a missionary on some island in the Pacific, and Wanda was going to be a dental assistant. Joe was going to open a car repair shop and Millie was going to marry Fred and start having children. Everyone was heading out into the big world to make his/her mark. Time passed.... I'd occasionally run across my bracelet as I emptied drawers or filled boxes to go to college, my first apartment, another college, our first house. I'd remember to write after I unpacked and before classes started, babies came, jobs, changed, I was sure. This was important, and I'd remember. Part of the hesitancy was a result of not knowing what to say. It was fifteen years after high school graduation that I met John. John sported one of those stainless steel bracelets. No one wore them anymore. Memories of the Vietnam War and life in the 70s rushed through my mind in an embarrassing memory of unmailed letters and unkept promises. I remembered! I remembered the sit-ins, the protest marches, peace signs, "War is not Healthy" posters and black lights. I remembered the perfumes that were named after nature -- Wild Grasses, Ocean Mist, Warm Earth. I remembered John Denver and Annie's Song and bell-bottom pants, chokers and fringed everything. I remembered Richard Nixon's 'ending that war' for us, and how proud I was. I remembered his trip to China. I remembered it all. But the warmth of the memories was soon replaced by the ice-water jolt of the realization that I had unfinished and important business. YOU know the kind -- the complete shock, embarrassment and urgency that makes your heart race and your skin crawl. The kind that makes you hear rushing wind when everything's still, the feeling that you've committed an unforgivable offense. I had forgotten to write The Letter. I had forgotten to wear the bracelet. I had forgotten my commitment to those who were missing or dead. I forgot that these people were somebody's children. I had forgotten to remember. As John fingered the bracelet and told me about his POW, I saw tears glistening in his eyes, threatening at any moment to cut a trail down his cheek and through his beard and mustache. He looked at me and said, "You know, my son graduated from West Point, and he may well be in the same position as these poor guys one day. I pray that it never happens, but if it does, and if God wills it, and my son disappears, I pray that someone remembers. We must never forget." Lt. Col. Bruce G. Johnson (USA, MI, 6/10/65, South Vietnam), please forgive me. Please forgive us all, lest we forget. -- Gail Bracy __________________________________________________ Gail says, "I live in Watertown, NY, and very much enjoy writing. He informed me yesterday... 'they are messing you over really bad on purpose. You must have made a lot of people mad. So now we have to work ten times as hard to make what would have been easy to make.' The devil can’t get to God so he comes after us. A good thing to remember is this-that if you’re not pleasing God, you’re pleasing the devil; and if you’re pleasing the devil, you’re not pleasing God. They don’t want the people we are getting in their country,” the President said. https://tinyurl.com/yccdgsyh So sad... Now here's just another example of what the left wing media will do to try and smear Conservatives and Trump... When President Trump recently replied to a question about MS-13 and called them animals, the left media went nuts and took his words out of context saying he was talking about all immigrants. This led them to show a young girl crying saying she wasn't an animal. How despicable of these people! They are lower than dirt to imply that our President who says he is for ALL Americans AND has an immigrant wife - our First Lady Melania - would call all immigrants 'animals' is beyond words! Just horrible of them! Some would say outright devilish. My heart went out to this little girl for their cruelty to her and making her think the most powerful and prominent man in the United States thought of her as an animal. M3-13 people are extremely heartless and cruel. They care nothing for human life... They don't value life: White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley defended President Trump's characterization of MS-13 gang members: "That's what they are, they're animals," Gidley said of MS-13 members. "What do you call somebody who comes into this country illegally, unlawfully, whose motto is rape, control, kill?" he asked. "It is not gum drops, hugs and kisses. It is a violent, brutal gang that goes across this country terrorizing American citizens. Cutting off people's heads. Tearing hearts out of people's bodies. Mazzella I believe in guardian angels. Since I was a boy I have felt watched over, loved, and protected by my unseen friends and I am so thankful to God for them. I have had far too many near misses with hurt and harm over the years for it to be mere luck. I guess my guardian angels are keeping me around for a reason and I will do my best not to make their work too hard in the future. I also believe in guardian angels because I have seen one in action over the years. My oldest son graduates from high school this Spring. Through all of his years in school he has struggled with Autism. It has made it difficult for him to learn, to relate to others, and to function in this world. Thankfully, though, he has had a guardian angel with him every step of the way. His aide has been there with him through all the difficulties, through all the triumphs, through all the pains, and through all the joys. She was there when he first started to speak in sentences. She was there when he first started to read. She was there when he first started to make friends and play with the other children. She helped him through every frustration he faced and comforted him through every bit of sadness he had to endure. She helped him to become the happy and loving soul that he is today. She loved him, cared for him, guided him, encouraged him, and watched over him. She has been his aide, his friend, his second mother, and his guardian angel. Words can never express all the good that she has done for him. All I can say to her is "Thank you so much for being such an angel in my son’s life." There are many guardian angels in our lives. Some are unseen, but some walk with us and help us everyday. Take the time then to thank God for all the guardian angels in this world. Take the time as well to thank all the guardian angels that touch your own life. But most of all take the time to be a loving, joyous guardian angel yourself to every hurting heart that needs you. -<>- , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' >Woman decides to drink eight glasses of water every day By Greg Miller Cheryl had made some changes in her lifestyle because she wanted to be a greater witness for the Lord. Those changes included walking for about 30 minutes every day, eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, and losing about 40 troublesome pounds she had been promising to shed for more than 10 years. Cheryl knew that she needed to drink the proper amount of water to keep her body hydrated, so although she loved sweet tea and soft drinks she decided to drink water most of the time. Cheryl treated herself to a cup of sweet tea to celebrate her decision. She dedicated the rest of her life to her new passion: Fresh water. She drank water with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. She drank a glass of sweet tea only about once a month. Before long, Cheryl began to feel more energized and alert. "Water is almost like a miracle drug," she said. "I'm going to ask my friends to join me on life's journey with water." One Friday after work, Cheryl met her best friend, Carlissa, at the Mall for an evening of shopping and conversation. Carlissa noticed that two bottles of spring water were in Cheryl's purse. "So when did you become so crazy about water?," Carlissa asked. "Just recently," Cheryl said. "I wanted to be healthier, so I could be a better witness for the Lord. "This water is so great! I wish I had made my decision many years ago." "I couldn't live without my sweet tea and soft drinks!," Carlissa exclaimed. "I'd never be able to make it through the day without them!" "I drink a lot of water because I want to be healthy," Cheryl said. "But I also want to glorify Jesus Christ in every aspect of my life. When I'm on the job, I want to be a good testimony. When I'm engaged in leisurely activities, I want to glorify God." Cheryl told Carlissa that drinking lots of water made it much easier to share her faith in Christ with other people. "How can a simple glass of water help you to tell others about the Lord?," Carlissa asked. "It's tasteless, odorless, calorie-less. It has no redeeming social value." "Water helps us to thrive while we're alive," Cheryl replied. "And Jesus offers Living Water. I'll throw the darts and you say, `Wonderful!'" Here is a boy who was not afraid to ask for the encouragement he needs. Maybe we all have something to learn from him! Inspirational author and educator, Fr. Brian Cavanaugh, relates a story about the devastating effects of discouragement. Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the famous 19th Century poet and artist, was once approached by an elderly man who asked him to look at a few of his sketches and drawings. The gentleman wanted to know if the artist thought they were of any value. As gently as possible, Rossetti told the man that the sketches were of no value and showed little talent. He apologized for the harsh assessment but said that he believed he should be honest. The visitor was disappointed but asked the artist if he could take a look at just a few more, which were all done by a young art student. Rossetti looked over the second batch of sketches and immediately became enthusiastic over the talent they revealed. "These," he said, " oh, these are good." He went on to say that the young student shows much promise and should be given every help and encouragement, as he may have a great future if he will study and work hard. The old man was deeply moved. Rossetti asked, "Who is this fine, young artist? Your son?" "No," replied the visitor sadly. "It is I - forty years ago. If only I had heard your praise then. For you see, I became discouraged and gave up too soon." Mother Teresa wisely said, "Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless." Sometimes it may be enough to just say, "Wonderful!" The waters from America passing near Greenland and on to England soon earned the nickname Torpedo Alley. February 1943 was an icy cold time in Torpedo Alley and the waters were just above freezing. On the early morning of February 3 the USS Dorchester a converted luxury coastal liner into a troop carrier was 150 miles from Greenland with 900 sailors, soldiers and civilian workers. Silently the Dorchester and five other ships were making their way to Greenland. At 1:00 AM the German submarine U-223 fired three torpedoes. One torpedo hitting the Dorchester a mid-ship below the water line causing a tremendous explosion, fire and death. In less than 30 minutes the ship settled to the bottom of the Atlantic. 230 survivors were picked up by two escort ships making this the third largest loss of life in American Naval warfare during WWII. There were four Chaplains on the Dorchester that morning. All four Chaplains distinguished themselves as they stepped forward with the ship ablaze and the abandon ship horn sounding --- they stood their ground and began praying for the men --- THIS WAS KINGDOM BUSINESS --- many of those they were praying for would not make it. One witness, Private William B. Bednar, found himself floating in oil-smeared water surrounded by dead bodies and debris. "I could hear men crying, pleading, praying," Bednar recalls. "I could also hear the chaplains preaching courage. Their voices were the only thing that kept me going." The four chaplains were: Lt. George L. Fox, Methodist Lt. Alexander D. Goode, Jewish Lt. Clark V. Poling, Dutch Reformed Lt. John P. Washington, Roman Catholic "Witnesses of that terrible night remember hearing the four men offer prayers for the dying and encouragement for those who would live," says Wyatt R. Fox, son of Reverend Fox. Another sailor, Petty Officer John J. Mahoney, tried to re-enter his cabin but was stopped by Rabbi Goode. Mahoney, concerned about the cold Arctic air, explained he had forgotten his gloves. "Never mind," Goode responded. "I have two pairs." The Rabbi then gave the petty officer his own gloves. In retrospect, Mahoney realized that Rabbi Goode was not conveniently carrying two pairs of gloves, and that the rabbi had decided not to leave the Dorchester. By this time, most of the men were topside, and the chaplains opened a storage locker and began distributing life jackets. It was then that Engineer Grady Clark witnessed an astonishing sight. When there were no more lifejackets in the storage room, the chaplains removed theirs and gave them to four frightened young men. "It was the finest thing I have seen or hope to see this side of heaven," said John Ladd, another survivor When last seen all four Chaplains were arm in arm as the ship sank and the sea rolled over them. The four Chaplains on the Dorchester --- their story --- their bravery and love for their fellowmen has survived in stain glass windows at the West Point Chapel, in the Pentagon and the Chapel at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. A posthumous Special Medal for Heroism, never before given and never to be given again, was authorized by Congress and awarded by the President Eisenhower in 1961. Prayer: Father, thank you for Memorial Day each year where we can show our appreciation for all those who gave their lives so freedom rings. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen! It started just before I first entered school and made me very unpopular in school -- taunts and tortures were delivered to me every day. This went on from the first grade until eighth grade, continuing even after I lost all of the weight in 7th grade. Although I was a good student I hated going to school, and hated even more the bus trips home. I lived in agony. In 1967, my family moved to Simi Valley, California. I had a chance to start over, and I vowed that I would communicate with no one, I wouldn't give anyone a chance to hurt me as I'd been hurt for so many years. This made for a lonely existence, but I welcomed being invisible -- at least nobody would taunt and torture me. One day, after I'd been at this new school about three months, a girl approached me as I was putting my books in my locker. She invited me to join her circle of friends. I declined -- this was a ruse used many times by many people in my past, and always I had found that they wanted to be anything but my friends. It was a way to lure me into their proximity so they could taunt me. I swore I'd never set myself up for that again. This went on about five days... this person coming up, and my declining. Finally, this person, Rose Anne Terry (back then Rose Anne Miller), grabbed me by the arm and said, "You are going to have friends whether you like it or not." She took me over to her other friends, about five girls. They asked about my interests, and invited me to go with them for some social activities. They welcomed me into their group with open arms. I couldn't believe it. Here, finally, was a group of people who wanted to know me, really wanted to know me, and had no interest in taking advantage of me. I was elated! I had friends! Up to this point I had no friends and basically lived as a recluse, a misfit. I had no idea how to socially interact with anyone. I was so socially awkward, so inept when it came to interpersonal relations that no one had wanted to know me. Through the friendship with Rose and her circle of friends, I learned how to be a teenager. I learned about the music, the way to dress, and how to relate to others my own age. I was heading for a life as a recluse, a "mama's girl", a socially backward person. These people, and especially Rosie, saved me and made me the person I am today. Rosie and I have remained close friends up to this day: 39 years. She saved me from a life of pain and loneliness. I love you, best buddy. Thank you. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Our Friend Geniann :) ============;===========;() # # # #:::::: # # # #:::::: # # # #:::::: # # # #:::::: # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # jgs # # # # # # # >Pearl Harbor I never knew this little bit of history: Tour boats ferry people out to the USS Arizona Memorial in Hawaii every thirty minutes. We just missed a ferry and had to wait thirty minutes. I went into a small gift shop to kill time and purchased a small book entitled, "Reflections on Pearl Harbor " by Admiral Chester Nimitz. Sunday, December 7th, 1941--Admiral Chester Nimitz was attending a concert in Washington D.C. He was paged and told there was a phone call for him. When he answered the phone, it was President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on the phone. He told Admiral Nimitz that he (Nimitz) would now be the Commander of the Pacific Fleet. Admiral Nimitz flew to Hawaii to assume command of the Pacific Fleet. He landed at Pearl Harbor on Christmas Eve, 1941. There was such a spirit of despair, dejection and defeat--you would have thought the Japanese had already won the war. On Christmas Day, 1941, Adm. Nimitz was given a boat tour of the destruction wrought on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. Big sunken battleships and navy vessels cluttered the waters every where you looked. As the tour boat returned to dock, the young helmsman of the boat asked, "Well Admiral, what do you think after seeing all this destruction?" Admiral Nimitz's reply shocked everyone within the sound of his voice. Admiral Nimitz said, "The Japanese made three of the biggest mistakes an attack force could ever make, or God was taking care of America. Which do you think it was?" Shocked and surprised, the young helmsman asked, "What do mean by saying the Japanese made the three biggest mistakes an attack force ever made?" Nimitz explained: Mistake number one: The Japanese attacked on Sunday morning. Nine out of every ten crewmen of those ships were ashore on leave. If those same ships had been lured to sea and been sunk--we would have lost 38,000 men instead of 3,800. Mistake number two: When the Japanese saw all those battleships lined in a row, they got so carried away sinking those battleships, they never once bombed our dry docks opposite those ships. If they had destroyed our dry docks, we would have had to tow every one of those ships to America to be repaired. As it is now, the ships are in shallow water and can be raised. One tug can pull them over to the dry docks, and we can have them repaired and at sea by the time we could have towed them to America . And I already have crews ashore anxious to man those ships. Mistake number three: Every drop of fuel in the Pacific theater of war is in top of the ground storage tanks five miles away over that hill. One attack plane could have strafed those tanks and destroyed our fuel supply. That's why I say the Japanese made three of the biggest mistakes an attack force could make or God was taking care of America. I've never forgotten what I read in that little book. It is still an inspiration as I reflect upon it. In jest, I might suggest that because Admiral Nimitz was a Texan, born and raised in Fredricksburg, Texas, he was a born optimist. But anyway you look at it, Admiral Nimitz was able to see a silver lining in a situation and circumstance where everyone else saw only despair and defeatism. President Roosevelt had chosen the right man for the right job. We desperately needed a leader that could see silver linings in the midst of the clouds of dejection, despair and defeat. There is a reason that our national motto is, IN GOD WE TRUST Why have we forgotten? PRAY FOR OUR COUNTRY! --- ...ALWAYS!
