The best-dressed high school students had AT LEAST one each, and we all wore them proudly. After all, war was dirty business, and we were doing our part... by remembering. We were wearing bracelets that had the name and rank of a soldier Missing In Action or who was captured and kept as a Prisoner of War. Our bracelets told which country the soldier represented, as well. They listed where the soldier was stationed when he disappeared and his home state. There was information concerning his last-known address, so if you wanted to, you could send a note to the family, telling them that you had their son's name on your bracelet, and that you'd never forget him. That was the idea, after all -- to wear the bracelet until he came home, or simply to always remember him. I had every intention of writing to the parents of "my guy," but every effort was interrupted by important things thinks like pajama parties, dances, pep rallies, bicycle trips and county fairs. Things like summer camp, tree climbing, book reading and birthday parties. I would remember to write later. I promised myself at least weekly for a number of months that I'd write to his parents, yet never seemed to have the time or the postage stamp. There were no home computers or email messages back then. I would remember next week after final exams. Yes, I'd remember next week. This was important stuff, and I'd remember. We started choosing colleges. I wanted to find a husband and start a family. Sue was going to be a chemist. Cliff was going to be a missionary on some island in the Pacific, and Wanda was going to be a dental assistant. Joe was going to open a car repair shop and Millie was going to marry Fred and start having children. Everyone was heading out into the big world to make his/her mark. Time passed.... I'd occasionally run across my bracelet as I emptied drawers or filled boxes to go to college, my first apartment, another college, our first house. I'd remember to write after I unpacked and before classes started, babies came, jobs, changed, I was sure. This was important, and I'd remember. Part of the hesitancy was a result of not knowing what to say. It was fifteen years after high school graduation that I met John. John sported one of those stainless steel bracelets. No one wore them anymore. Memories of the Vietnam War and life in the 70s rushed through my mind in an embarrassing memory of unmailed letters and unkept promises. I remembered! I remembered the sit-ins, the protest marches, peace signs, "War is not Healthy" posters and black lights. I remembered the perfumes that were named after nature -- Wild Grasses, Ocean Mist, Warm Earth. I remembered John Denver and Annie's Song and bell-bottom pants, chokers and fringed everything. I remembered Richard Nixon's 'ending that war' for us, and how proud I was. I remembered his trip to China. I remembered it all. But the warmth of the memories was soon replaced by the ice- water jolt of the realization that I had unfinished and important business. YOU know the kind -- the complete shock, embarrassment and urgency that makes your heart race and your skin crawl. The kind that makes you hear rushing wind when everything's still, the feeling that you've committed an unforgivable offense. I had forgotten to write The Letter. I had forgotten to wear the bracelet. I had forgotten my commitment to those who were missing or dead. I forgot that these people were somebody's children. I had forgotten to remember. As John fingered the bracelet and told me about his POW, I saw tears glistening in his eyes, threatening at any moment to cut a trail down his cheek and through his beard and mustache. He looked at me and said, "You know, my son graduated from West Point, and he may well be in the same position as these poor guys one day. I pray that it never happens, but if it does, and if God wills it, and my son disappears, I pray that someone remembers. We must never forget." Lt. Col. Bruce G. Johnson (USA, MI, 6/10/65, South Vietnam), please forgive me. Please forgive us all, lest we forget. -- Gail Bracy __________________________________________________ Gail says, "I live in Watertown, NY, and very much enjoy writing. (By Greg Laurie) Then Peter came to him and asked, "Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?" (Matthew 18:21) Talk about a person who had been wronged. Joseph's brothers had done all kinds of horrible things to him. They betrayed him, their own flesh and blood, and sold him into slavery. But through an amazing course of events that were directed by the hand of God, Joseph became the second most powerful man in the world at that time in history. One day, his brothers were brought before him - the very ones who had betrayed him. With one word, they could have become headless brothers. It could have been payback time for Joseph. But I love what he said: "Don't be afraid of me. Am I God, to judge and punish you? As far as I am concerned, God turned into good what you meant for evil. He brought me to the high position I have today so I could save the lives of many people" (Genesis 50:19-20). Did Joseph's brothers deserve to be forgiven? No. But if we resort to that kind of thinking, we must ask ourselves, "Do we deserve to be forgiven by God?" No. So we should forgive as God has forgiven us. There is no point in burying the hatchet if you're determined to mark the site. Let it go. Forgive. Forget. Put it behind you. Move forward. If you refuse to forgive people who have wronged you, then you will become a bitter person. The problem with bitterness is that it infects those around you (see Hebrews 12:14-15). If someone has sinned against you, you must learn to forgive. I know it is not an easy thing to do. But when you forgive someone, you release a prisoner - yourself. --- ...Great advise. Thanks LouiseAu! Many teach that we as Christians should forgive others that do things to hurt us or our loved ones. This is absolutely true. For our own sake, it is better for our health and well being not to harbor any hatred toward anyone or anything. After all, pure hatred is of the devil just as pure love is of God. Having hatred for any one or any thing is therefore putting yourself in line with the devil. Not a good thing. We want to put on the mind of Christ who as you know even asked God to forgive the people who crucified him. , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' Luke 23a: [34] Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. I'm struggled with this one. It amazed me that Jesus Christ had such a heart of gold he could stand up to God and ask forgiveness to Him for the very ones who caused him such pain and misery and death. Yet, now, I understand it. There is a difference between these people and people who knowingly do wrong. Those people who crucified our Lord were only following orders and doing what they felt was right according to their belief at the time. Jesus asked for their forgiveness for them because they didn't know that what they were doing was evil. The definition of a sin is explained here in James... Jas.4: [17] Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. For those who do things that they know they shouldn't, they need to do according to God's word to gain forgiveness of their sins... 1 John 1: [9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. That is pretty much the way I look at things. If someone, like Joseph's brothers did... Genesis 50: [18] And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants. If someone is seeking forgiveness from you for the wrong they know they caused you, then you are obligated to forgive them as God has forgiven and continues to forgive you. It doesn't matter how many times. However, I do not believe an automatic 'forgive' is expected of us from God. After all, even God requires us to confess our sins to Him and THEN He will forgive us of them. Not just automatically clean our black hearts without us telling Him how sorry we are for hurting Him and going against Him like we did when we sinned. We first are expected to confess our sins to Him - this means we are aware that we did wrong and want to correct our behavior and try not to ever do it again knowing it was wrong and we hurt Him. That is what I expect of those who I feel have gone against me. I don't harbor any ill will or hatred of them, but they do not have my trust again until they let me know they are sorry for what they did. I can't allow myself to be hurt over and over again by these people who don't even care about me, so I will distance myself from them until they do say they are sorry. Then I will forgive them and warmly welcome them back into my life. Just as God does. I have more respect for my God in Christ self then to allow them to continually harm me or my family. After all, I am a child of God and not someone who will allow others to do me wrong and just automatically forgive them so they can do it to me or my loved ones again. I require them to at least say they are sorry. Others that I feel have done me or my family or loved ones wrong AND I consider evil doers who are not repentant, I ask God through Christ Jesus to take care of according to His Word... Rom.12: [19] Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. God doesn't want us full of hate. He'll take care of it so we can let go and let God. :) =========================================================== >-->From Archives InspiredBuffalo: >Sweet Revenge? , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' "He who has been forgiven little loves little." In Today in the Word the story is told about a woman who once came to Ibn Saud, the first king of Saudi Arabia, requesting that the man who killed her husband be put to death. The man had fallen from the top of a palm tree when he had been gathering dates and landed on this lady's husband and killed him. The king said, "It is your right to exact compensation, and it is also your right to ask for this man's life. But it is my right to decree how he shall die. You shall take this man with you and he shall be tied to the foot of a palm tree and then you shall climb to the top of the tree and cast yourself down upon him from that height. In that way you will take his life as he took your husband's. Or perhaps," Ibn Saud added, "you would prefer after all to take the blood money?" The widow took the money. To fail to forgive keeps us bound to the past. It is a killer--not of the one who caused the resentment, but the one who carries the resentment. As another has put it, "Failing to forgive is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die." Also, as Jesus said, "He who has forgiven little loves little." One way to love much, therefore, is to confess all our wrongs and sins, not only to God, but to the one/s we have hurt and do all we can to make restitution and be forgiven ourselves. For he who has been forgiven much loves much! -<>- ============;===========;() # # # #:::::: # # # #:::::: # # # #:::::: # # # #:::::: # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # jgs # # # # # # # >The Old Veteran by Bill Walker wildbill6807@yahoo.com Memorial Day is here almost. Another Memorial Day. There will be a parade maybe in your town. You can see the newer Veterans marching along, still got some hup, two, three, four in step. Then there may be some older ones in the ranks, that is losing the hup, two, three, four. Then there may be a few cars with old Veterans that has lost it all together. That is the hup, two, three, four. You will also see some old Veterans on the curbs watching. You can always spot a Veteran that is on the curb. He comes to life for a few minutes when Old Glory passed in front of him. He stands taller then he has for some time. He may even give a dirty look at some scum dirt bag that don't snap to when Old Glory passed by. He knows what that flag means. He has seen the times he fought to get that flag to the top of some hill in some battle. He remembers the times when he looked ahead or off to the side, some one planted Old Glory over there. The shot and shell was still coming, but there is Old Glory. He remembers the ones who didn't make it back. He remembers the ones he may have helped down the hill to a medic. He remembers, he knows what that flag stands for. It isn't just a flag, it is Old Glory. He stands a little taller when Old Glory in all it's Glory goes by. Memorial Day is Memorial Day to an old Veteran. It isn't the first day of summer to him. It isn't a day to go to the races, it isn't a day for a cook out, it isn't a day to have a good time. It is a day to remember, remember those that didn't come back from OVER THERE. Yes you can spot the old Veteran.. He may have tears thinking of where he has been, thinking of things that happened, thinking of those wounded, those that died for just a few feet up the hill. All for Old Glory, and what it stands for. -<>- \\ ///// | | (| _ _ |) |` | '| | __ | >>>___/\_^__/\___<<< / ||| \ Mike Hertz >I am a Soldier I am a soldier in the army of my God. She needed a passport, so she went to the Federal Office and applied. "You must take the loyalty oath first," the passport clerk said. "Raise your right hand, please." The senior citizen raised her right hand as the clerk asked, "Do you swear to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, domestic or foreign?" The sweet old face paled and the voice trembled as she responded, "Well, I guess so, but ... will I have help, or will I have to do it all by myself?" I understand exactly how she felt! When God calls us to wage war "against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 6:12), it can be a bit intimidating. Until we realize that we are not called to fight all by ourselves. God is on our side and "He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." (I John 4:4). It has always been a common fear among God's people, but God's answer has always been the same. Moses was afraid to confront Pharaoh, but God assured him that "I will certainly be with you." (Exodus 3:12). Joshua was afraid to lead the people of Israel into Canaan, but God said, "As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you." (Joshua 1:5). Gideon was afraid to fight the Midianites, but God said, "Surely I will be with you." (Judges 6:16). We live in a world of darkness. There are times when evil seems to have the upper hand and we are afraid to stand for what is is right. But God reminds us, "'I will never leave nor forsake you.' So we may boldly say, 'The Lord is my helper; I will not fear: what can man do to me?" (Hebrews 13:5-6). A difficult fight lies ahead for all of us. But we do not have to fight it all by ourselves! Have a great day! - Alan Smith --- ...A great reminder. Thanks Bunni! .-. __| |__ [__ __] | | | | jgs | | '-' So many times I hear people talking of being alone. I think to myself - as Christians, we are NEVER Alone! If as a Christian, you think you are alone, think again. You have God's spirit of Christ in you! That means you are not alone. Any time you are feeling lonely, just reach out to God. You have a direct line to Him ANY TIME - ANY WHERE! You have it better than these people of the Old Testament. Moses and Joshua had spirit from God 'placed on them' so God could talk with them... Num.11: [16] And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee. [17] And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone. As Christians, unlike them, God is your spiritual Father! You do not have spirit 'placed upon' you - you have the seed of God in Christ In You! In 1986 I was an American living in Cairo, Egypt. America had just bombed Gaddafi's tent compound in Libya, and Gaddafi had issued a death threat to all Americans in the region. Internal strife in Egypt was building, too, from changes initiated by Hosni Mubarak after Anwar Sadat's assassination. Next, the Egyptian military police rioted and burned down the Holiday Inn complex by the Giza Pyramids. In spite of the unrest, I still felt safe walking the Egyptian streets. But after the bombing and riots, it seemed more and more folks stared or frowned at me. Maybe they assumed I was an American who thought I was somehow "better off" than they were. Probably my self-conscious expression didn't help. At dusk one evening, I headed along a dimly lit sidewalk towards a local grocery. Cairo sidewalks were always lined with Egyptian men -- socializing, sharing cigarettes, and talking of the day's events. This night, it seemed as if their mood and conversational tone changed just as I approached. I felt negatively judged. Worried, I avoided eye contact and looked away as I quickened my pace towards the grocery. Then, wham! I slammed face-first into the sidewalk. I was so busy *not* looking I missed a step. I was immediately surrounded by several men. Being used to city streets in America, I must admit my first thought was they were going to take my wallet. Then I realized they were just lifting me up to set me back up on my feet. They brushed me off, straightened my clothes and asked if I was hurt. I said I was fine, smiled at everyone and shook their hands to thank them for their help. I suddenly realized these men were all smiling back. In fact, as I turned to see other men, women, and children along the sidewalk, they too smiled and asked if I was OK. I smiled, nodded, thanked everyone for the help and concern, and headed on. But now, something was different. Everywhere I went, every Egyptian was smiling. In fact, I couldn't find stares or frowns anywhere. For the first time, I felt not a foreigner in a foreign land, but rather a friend among friends. I suddenly felt at home, though over 8,000 miles from my family. That night the Egyptians showed me what humanity really is. In spite of regional political and economic upheaval, they refused to judge me because I was an American. Their reaching out to me with helping hands and smiles made me realize that maybe they were "better off" than I was. That night, I learned that a smile is an important gesture in our universal language, a simple act of kindness that transcends cultural and language barriers. Today I'm so very thankful for that brief moment in time. A moment where a simple smile enabled an Arab and an American to understand each other, and where I came away a changed man. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From CupO'Cheer: -=====- _..._ .~ `~. ,_ / } ,_\'--, \ _.'`~~/ \'--,_`{_,} -( '.`-.`\;--,___.'_ '._`/ |_ _{@} / ` |-';/ _ / \ / | _ {@}_ / '--;_ _ {@} _Y{@} _\ `\ {@}\Y/_{@} Y/ / |`-.___. / \Y/\|{@}Y/\|// ^^^jgs^^^`--`------'`--`^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ >They Who Served There they lie in peaceful serenity, as they shall through all eternity. He ought to know what it means to be a Christian; that it cost God his Son and the Son His life. When we cheapen it to make it acceptable to this age, we insult God." -- Vance Havner "If our petitions are in accordance with His will, and if we seek His glory in the asking, the answers will come in ways that will astonish us, and fill our hearts with songs of thanksgiving." --J. K. Maclean ?"Hope is not a granted wish or a favor performed; no, it is far greater than that. It is a zany, unpredictable dependence on a God who loves to surprise us out of our socks." --Max Lucado "The wages of sin have never been reduced." --Author Unknown "We must wait for God, long, meekly, in the wind and wet, in the thunder and lightning, in the cold and the dark. Wait, and he will come. He never comes to those who do not wait." --Frederick W. Faber -<>- >A DESIRE TO HELP One mother was jogging through the park, pushing two toddlers in a stroller. As they approached a hill, she said, "OK, now I need you to help me." And they did! As she started up the hill, they each said, "I think I can, I think I can, I think I can. . ." Sometimes it just takes the desire to help and you can find a way. One person known for his desire to help was Fiorello LaGuardia. LaGuardia was mayor of New York City during the worst days of the Great Depression and all of WWII. He was adored by many New Yorkers who took to calling him the "Little Flower," because of his name and the fact that he was so short and always wore a carnation in his lapel. In many ways, LaGuardia was bigger than life - he rode the New York City fire trucks, raided city "speakeasies" with the police department, took entire orphanages to baseball games and, when the New York newspapers went on strike, he got on the radio and read the Sunday funnies to the kids. One bitterly cold night in January of 1935, the mayor turned up at a night court that served the poorest ward of the city. LaGuardia dismissed the judge for the evening and took over the bench himself. Within a few minutes, a tattered old woman was brought before him, charged with stealing a loaf of bread. She told LaGuardia that her daughter's husband had deserted her, her daughter was sick, and her two grandchildren were starving. But the shopkeeper, from whom the bread was stolen, refused to drop the charges. "It's a real bad neighborhood, Your Honor," the man told the mayor. "She's got to be punished to teach other people around here a lesson." LaGuardia sighed. He turned to the woman and said, "I've got to punish you. The law makes no exceptions. Ten dollars or ten days in jail." But even as he pronounced sentence, the mayor was already reaching into his pocket. He extracted a bill and tossed it into his famous hat, saying, "Here is the ten dollar fine which I now remit; and furthermore, I am going to fine everyone in this courtroom fifty cents for living in a town where a person has to steal bread so that her grandchildren can eat. Mr. Bailiff, collect the fines and give them to the defendant." The following day, New York City newspapers reported that $47.50 was turned over to a bewildered woman who had stolen a loaf of bread to feed her starving grandchildren. Fifty cents of that amount was contributed by the grocery store owner himself, while some seventy petty criminals, people with traffic violations, and New York City policemen, each of whom had just paid fifty cents for the privilege of doing so, gave the mayor a standing ovation. Sometimes it just takes the desire to help and you can find a way. Someone beautifully said, "Sympathy sees and says, 'I'm sorry.' Compassion sees and says, 'I'll help.'" When we learn the difference, we will make a difference. -- Steve Goodier as seen in Life Support -<>- //_____ __ @ )====// .\___ \#\_\__(_/_\\_/ / / \\ Jiri Matejicek >A BUG’S LIFE We are not able to go up against the people, for they are too strong for us. NUMBERS 13:31 I remember the first time I walked into the office of Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ. I was spending a college summer break working with Campus Crusade for $50 a month. When I had the opportunity to meet with Bill, I noticed that on his desk was a plaque engraved with these words: “I’m no grasshopper.” When I asked what the phrase meant, he said it referred to the spies who were sent to scope out the land of Canaan in the Old Testament book of Numbers. God said He was giving the land to the Israelites, but 10 of 12 spies reported that it was impossible for the Israelites to conquer the land: “We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them” (Numbers 13:33, NIV). Only two spies said they should trust in God. Unfortunately, the nation of Israel refused to believe the minority report and consequently ended up wandering aimlessly in the wilderness for 40 years, never entering their promised reward. “When I arrive in heaven,” Bill said, “I don’t want my life here on Earth to have been characterized by viewing myself as a grasshopper. My God is so big, I want to expect and believe Him for great things.” Are you living in the camp of unbelief, overwhelmed by the struggles you are facing in your life, marriage, family or work? Are you paralyzed in unbelief or anger toward God for your circumstances? Do you feel like a “grasshopper”? Or are you turning in belief to the God who promises to work through you to accomplish the impossible? No matter how foolish you’ve been, no matter how many times you’ve failed before, Jesus stands ready to work through you if you’re ready to be a man or woman of faith. DISCUSS What issue seems so big to you right now, you don’t see any way it can turn out well? PRAY Confess to God that you lack the power to deal with the problems you face today. Ask Him for trust in His power to make the changes He desires. as seen in Moments Together For Couples -<>- .-. __| |__ [__ __] | | | | jgs | | '-' >MEMORIAL DAY We walked among the crosses Where our fallen soldiers lay. His arms holding tightly the killing machine, that is nothing like the guns he wore around his hips just a few short years ago. He had dreamed of being a cowboy, then a policeman, then a soldier. That is what he was now, a soldier and he was proud, so proud. It wasn't hard to go and train to do what he was here to do and the weight had not been so heavy on his shoulders and on his heart. He blinks the sand and grit from his eyes as he glances around at all the other soldiers around him, and hopes a tear does not slip down his check, so that they might think him a sissy and weak. He reaches deep inside his pocket to feel the picture of his girl, She is so cute, he thought, remembering those shiny blue eyes so full of love and hope as he slipped that little promise ring on her finger, and how those eyes had brimmed when he kissed her goodbye. Mom had made him a bunch of cookies and had even made a scarf, "in case you get cold". If she could only see the sweat pouring off him now, he wore it still around his neck. He thinks of sleep on his twin bed back there at home across the room from his kid brother, how Mom had yelled on more than one occasion "boys clean your room." If she could see his room now, Ha! He breathes a heavy breath recalling the fresh air that had poured into his room from the open windows, choking on the hot stale air and the stench of men. He pushes onward. They are humming now, they are chanting as they get closer still to their destination, its really praying, they are doing, its just dulled out by the sound of air craft in the distance and the steady pummelt of explosives on their target. He remembers the old war movies he and his brother used to watch and how they would jump up and yell "another one hits the dust!" every time a bomb would hit the enemy . He wasn't jumping now, his feet were hurting and his throat was raw. He pushes onward. He thinks about the time, so soon that he will have to face another face, maybe just like his, just a boy. He is a ground soldier and he was trained to kill, in a personal way. He wonders if he will be man enough to do it when the time comes. He takes his orders from the man to take cover, and sets himself up to do the job that he was sent here to do, kill. He wonders for a minute, maybe he should have become a cowboy. He glances around at his fellow soldiers as they prepare the hole that will protect them or become their grave. He barely hears the order to" Fire!," from the pounding of blood that has rushed to his head from his run away heart. He hears the sounds now, sounds that he has dreamed of since he first stepped foot on this desolate land. The screams of bullets and the screams of his buddies. Around him lays the twisted in agony bodies of his fellow men and their blood runs rich in the hole, and the pain in his gut is more than he could ever have imagined. He reaches deep inside his pocket for the picture of his girl, one little peek, and squeezes tight the funny scarf around his neck, funny he does feel a chill. He will be alright if he can just sleep, just rest a minute. He dreams of blue eyes and Mom in her kitchen making those cookies and a crazy little brother who gets on his nerves. He hears in the distance a doorbell ringing, as a young girl with blue eyes and a ring on her finger and a Mother collapse in each others arms. as seen in Inspiration Plus To SUBSCRIBE: Send an e-mail with SUBSCRIBE CUP O'CHEER in the subject line to cheer316@sc.rr.com. ========================================================== >-->From Kidwarmers: <> .-"""-. ||::::::========== /= \ ||::::::========== |- /~~~\ | ||::::::========== |=( '.' ) | ||================ \__\_=_/__/ ||================ {_______} ||================ /` * `'--._|| /= .
