Amazing! More amazing is her life and attitude. Her parents moved to Tamaqua to a house on Railroad Street in 1918. The fourth of ten children, she spent her early years picking coal and huckleberries to help the family get through the Great Depression. She has so many warm and good memories of growing up in tough times. She shared one bed with two sisters. She saw many things including the Hindenberg blimp, just before it met its demise in New Jersey. Being on that street, she also witnessed hundreds of "Troop Trains" taking the boys off the WWII, often handing homemade treats to them through the open windows. During her young adult life, she and Uncle Pete traveled, sometimes with Aunt Josephine and Uncle Joey, visiting shrines and baseball parks around the country. Aunt Helen lost Uncle Pete to Cancer in September, 1965. I remember how brokenhearted everyone was about it. Uncle Pete was a great guy with a most generous heart and terrific funny bone. After Uncle Petsey died, she moved from their apartment back home to Gram Baddick's and her childhood home. Many people in town know her as one of the servers in her clean crisp white uniform and apron at the St. Jerome's First Holy Communion breakfast. Some of the ladies made and served the class breakfast while parents waited in the back of the gym which was decorated by none other than... Aunt Helen! Aunt Helen decorated everything and anything using just about everything and anything! I remember one centerpiece that was a styrofoam base sporting a Christmas yard scene. Strung atop was a miniature Santa Claus and sleigh. It was such a magical scene! Aunt Helen always had a ton of construction paper to use and make things. She would often sit and color with me either in a book or on a page where you would draw a picture adding sparkles if you wanted! Nobody else ever had sparkles at their house! Aunt Helen is also the only aunt who would make peanut butter and marshmallow on crackers! She also had Oreos. I asked my mom why she never made these and she explained, "I bake cookies. Why would ever you want to eat those store bought cookies?" Over the years our photos show her sitting on the floor with one or many of us kids, playing a game or quietly telling us a story, or coloring. Truly, it was more her presence that we enjoyed. Not so much what she did, but just being with her. That is the greatest lesson -- it is not about the stuff, it's about the love, attention and time that she gave us. When she turned 80, I asked her for some sage life advice. She told me, "Jeannie Marie, expect nothing! Take the word 'expect' out of your vocabulary. Then, everything nice in life will be a wonderful surprise and your will never be disappointed!" At 97, she still lives by her advice. May she live as she hopes for 100 years as we say in Polish -- "STO LAT!" -- Jeannie Paslawsky __________________________________________________ Jeannie was born and raised in the anthracite region in Tamaqua, PA, and now resides in Willow Grove. I heard of a man who occasionally swallowed coins -- enough to make him sick! Which, as it turns out, was the whole idea. When asked why he made himself sick swallowing coins, he replied that he enjoyed the affection and attention the staff showed him in the hospital! He was lonely. Many of us are lonely. When asked, "What is life's heaviest burden?" one lonely old man answered, "To have nothing to carry." A cure for loneliness is to carry the burden of another. Get involved with their problems. Visit others who are also lonely. Listen to someone else's troubles. Find people who need you and do something for them. Carrying another's burden will lighten the load of your loneliness. I know a woman who gave each person in her family a golden angel lapel pin one Christmas. "Wear it on your collar or shoulder," she said, "to remind you that your guardian angel is always looking over your shoulder." Her brother noticed his pin had a broken wing. He held up his damaged angel and quipped, "It figures. My guardian angel is missing a wing. She can't even take care of herself!" Two years later he died of cancer. As I thought of the pain his family must be feeling, I was struck with how his broken angel is like each of us. We each hurt. We all experience loss. At times we are lonely. Like that angel, we are each broken in some way, even if our damage is interior and invisible to other.s But we're each like his broken angel in another way, too. As it has been so beautifully said, "We are all like angels with just one wing. We can only fly by embracing each other." You see, we will heal best by hanging on to one another. And we will overcome loneliness best by putting an arm around someone else and going it with them. This family embraced each other. And as they carried one another's burdens, their own loads were lightened. It's a solution for loneliness -- and a formula for happiness. The face and composure of people who are grateful for the gift of life, takes many forms. It can be a contagious sparkle or a quiet, deep abiding peace. Unlike the class levels of financial status, an abundance or lack of material possessions does not define it. Unlike the judgmental ideals of society, physical shape and features do not give it definition. True gratitude for life draws people near and leaves them feeling better about themselves for having had the encounter. It's instantly recognizable, not so much by what it is, more, by what it isn't. It's list of lack is long. Constant complaint, jealousy, bitterness, envy and anger are oddly missing. Odd, because we're so used to hearing them expounded. Their absence is noticeable. We exercise our freedom to complain - a lot. Sounds of gratitude are rarely heard. When asked, "How are you?", the first thought that enters your mind reveals where your focus lies. Problems at work, physical ailments or trouble with friends and family are likely to show up first. Have you ever entertained the thought of replying, "Happy to be alive"? Dr. Paul Brand encountered resilience and nobility, gratitude and reverence for life, in the leprosy colonies of India. He expected to find defeat and despair. Instead, he found appreciation for the gift of being alive and a grace that forever changed the course of his life. The majority of people on this planet have less than we could ever imagine. Our creature comforts, food, shelter, running water, access to healthcare and education, are luxuries they will never know. How then, is it possible for them to find, in the midst of destitution, the one thing that escapes the majority of people who have so much more by comparison? Where is our joy? I read an astounding statement by one of Dr. Brand's patients. After a life of suffering and complete rejection by his family, the man said he was now happy he had leprosy. His explanation? "Apart from leprosy, I would have been a normal man with a normal family, chasing wealth and a higher position in society. I would never have known such wonderful people as Dr. Paul and Dr. Margaret (Dr. Brand's wife) and I would never have known the God who lives in them." If your focus is as narrow as your own life, what happens on the rest of the planet doesn't impact the course of your thoughts. For many, it's too sad and too terrible. They have enough worries. They don't want to think about it. Avoid the world's pain and you cut off access to its joy. Dr. Brand never made much money treating the poor, but sharing their pain brought more peace to his spirit than money could ever buy. "It's strange," he said. "Those of us who involve ourselves in places where there is the most suffering, look back in surprise to find that it was there that we discovered the reality of joy." Is the reality of joy reflected in your life? Are you happy to be alive? Words from a Simple Heart© Living in love and loving life, Terri McPherson WiseHearts... My brothers and I knew poor. Our family had very little. I don't remember the bad. I remember the summers fishing in the lakes or in the ocean from the local wharves. I remember walks in the woods with my Mum looking for Mayflowers and hot summer days spent swimming at the local swimming hole with friends. At twenty, I moved to Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. It was lonely there. I remember being homesick. It was my first time living away from home. After several months, I moved back home. There was the mother I missed, but everything else seemed different. I thought it was my friends, but it was me. I'd changed. I'd grown up from my experiences. A few months later, I had to move for work again. This time I moved to Sydney, Nova Scotia. It is a coal mining and steel mill city. When the wind blew from the mill, the air made you dream of better places. A year later, I was back home, where I met my first wife, married and lived on the ocean again. My life kept changing, but I survived. Years later, I found myself in Saint John, New Brunswick. It was a huge change my family. We all thought we'd live happily ever after in Nova Scotia, but God had other plans. We moved to Saint John, New Brunswick, where the air was thick with the smog from the largest oil refinery in Canada, ship building, a pulp and paper mill, and let's throw in a sugar refinery too. In the summer, when the fog rolled in, all that pollution was trapped over the city. It was not pretty. We moved to Ohio. That wasn't too bad. We did have bad air on cold days in the winter, when inversions trapped the exhaust from the highway traffic and high humidity in the summer. Next stop, New Jersey: air pollution, traffic and crime. We moved from there to Idaho. Idaho, with its mountains, clean rivers, canyons and gorges is incredible, but I miss the other places: the concrete canyons of Manhattan, the smell of the mills, the steel and all the bad things. Each place had treasures to explore and people I met and loved. It's not the place you live; it is how you enjoy the best of what you have. - Michael T. Smith --- ...So True - Wonderful! Although we visit our families in the U.S.A. once a year, we didn't really give much thought to the changes my husband's aging parents and aunts were going through. Suddenly there was only one person left: his mother. His mom is a diabetic in her mid-80s, a heart attack survivor with bad knees, and an independent lady whose English is an increasingly rusty second language now that she is alone. Her driving has become more erratic, and she falls more frequently. The house she loves and has lived in for over 40 years has become challenging for her. She is faced with making it safer or moving to senior housing. We made separate yearly visits to give her more company, but otherwise could only try to help from afar. Sometimes our help led to more problems, such as when I arranged to have my mother-in-law's many medications mailed to her. This eliminated the one-hour drive that she had been making for years to a military base pharmacy. As a result, she had to frequently hobble down her steep front steps and walk up an incline along an open drainage ditch to get to her street side mailbox. I applied for a nonprofit community development grant to install a ramp in place of her steps, but the slope of the lawn made the ramp too expensive. On other occasions, we couldn't get the resources my mother-in-law needed right away. On my last visit, she had trouble standing for more than 10 minutes because of a fall. On her limited income, she couldn't afford a helper, so I contacted the county senior services for light housekeeping services. However, there was a waiting list and it was months later when the housekeeping service became available. During the application process, to our surprise, my mother-in-law was assigned a social worker specializing in senior citizens. I assumed it this was just to verify that she needed the service. I didn't realize that Lori, the social worker, could and would do much more. Lori makes home visits and takes the time to patiently understand what my mother-in-law's needs are. She has gone with my mother-in-law to the doctor, arranged for a mailbox and mail delivery at the front door, and even pushed through a modified, affordable version of the stalled ramp project. Lori has even driven my mother-in-law to see several senior housing complexes. On top of all this, she emails me updates to let me know about options and resources. I know it's Lori's job to know what to do and who to go to in order to resolve issues common to senior citizens; however, Lori doesn't stop there. When there is something that would help my mother-in-law, Lori runs with it and sees it through -- as if my mother-in-law were her only case. Thank you, Lori, for making such a difference, both for my mother-in-law and for us. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Our Friend Geniann :) _..._ _..._ .' _ '. .' _ './ (a) .-'-. / (e) .-'-. And my New Years resolution will always be, To thank Him again for every breath of life He's given me. Then I will pray He will show me the way, Give me wisdom and guide me through each day. And most of all at the end of each year, Keep by me those friends I will always hold so dear. And as I make new friends I'll treasure the old, For the first are silver the latter gold.
