For our international friends, Thanksgiving is an American holiday that is celebrated to give thanks and count our many blessings. It's next Thursday, November 22. To commemorate the holiday, here's a special story. , |\ | `-._,="""=, \ //o.-)-.\ \ ||/:/:\:\-. `. \\\:\:/:/o_), jgs `->>>8888>;(_)o.-' >GRACE ON THE TRACKS by Roger Dean Kiser Once again, at the age of twelve, I had run away from the orphanage. It had not even entered my head that tomorrow was going to be Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Day just happened to be one of the few days that we kids got to eat all that we wanted. I was headed out of Jacksonville, Florida, and I think I was westward bound -- whatever that direction was. All I knew was that someone had told me that I was born somewhere in California, and I had a mother and father out there somewhere. It was November so it was getting a little cold as the sun went down. I knew from past experience that I could not stay on the main road as the police would be looking for me. They would return me to the Duval County Juvenile Hall or worse, back to "The Orphanage". As I walked along, I came across some railroad tracks which I thought I would follow in hopes they might lead me to my mother somewhere in California. After about an hour or two of walking the tracks, I came across a large bonfire. There were several men standing around in a circle trying to stay warm. "Where you headed kid?" yelled one of the men. "Going to California to find my mom and dad," I hollered back at him. "Going the wrong way kid," he said, cupping his hands over his mouth like a bull-horn. Slowly I walked over to where the men were standing and I asked if I might get warm by the fire. "Get that empty can over there and I'll give you a cup of hot beans," said one of the men who was sitting on an old stack of tires. They sure were good beans too! I think I ate two whole cans. Sure was nice of them to give me some of their food. "Might as well stay here for the night," said the man with the sling on his arm. I know my eyes got real big and I got a little scared when he put his good arm around me. "It's gonna be ok kid. I'll look after you," said the man who had given me the beans. I slept pretty good considering how cold it was out there by the tracks. There were a few old army blankets that smelled real bad, but they sure were warm and itchy. The next morning we had beans once again for breakfast. That was the first time I ever had coffee and it was real good tasting. Made you feel real warm inside. After breakfast we cleaned up our mess and burned it all in the fire and then we poured water over the fire and made it go out. For most of the day we walked down the railroad tracks. Once in a while, we would sneak over a fence and steal some fruit to eat. I didn't like stealing but that fruit sure tasted awfully good. Right before dark one of the men went into a small store and asked if he could do some work for a loaf of white bread and some meat, but the store man told him "No." Later on, I went back into the store and when the man wasn't looking I stole that loaf of bread and two packs of meat which had bad tasting pickles in it. That night we had fruit, pickle meat sandwiches, and beans for Thanksgiving Dinner. I called it "Supper". I never knew that poor people like hobos ever said grace before they ate, especially after stealing food. But they did, and they really meant it too, because I could tell it in their voices when they all said "Amen". "How come you people always say grace when you eat. You're like me. You ain't got nothing to be thankful for," I said. "Ain't you got two arms and two legs kid?" asked one of the men. "Course I got two arms and two legs," I told him. "Then you got something to be thankful for," said the man, as he raised his pants leg and showed me his fake leg. "Did the big war do that to you?" I asked him. The man did not answer me. He just got up from his seat on the ground and walked away off into the darkness. "It's OK kid. He just takes the war harder than the rest of us. We were all in the war," said his friend. "You was in the war too?" I asked. He looked down at the ground without answering my question. Then he broke into tears and covered his face. I sat there not knowing what to say. I just sipped on my warm coffee and tried to stay warm. The next thing I remember it was morning time. The four men all told me goodbye, except the one who could not talk -- he spoke with his hands and fingers. Then they jumped on the slow moving train and left me standing all alone beside the railroad tracks. I took my two good arms and my two good legs and I walked back to the orphanage. When I saw the head matron, Mrs. Winters, I told her, with my mouth that could speak words, that I was very sorry I had run away and that I was very ashamed for not being thankful for all that God had given me. -- Roger Dean Kiser ___________________________________________ Roger is a Heartwarmer Gem and the founder of the Sad Orphan Foundation. The Mayflower Voyage was a difficult one. The Ship, crossed the Atlantic later than Planned and met with Severe Storms before reaching Land 66 Days later. On November 11, 1620, the Mayflower came to rest off Cape Cod. Since Cape Cod was Unsuitable for Settlement, Several men set out in a smaller Boat to search for a place to build their Homes. It was mid-December before they decided on the Sheltered Harbor and well-cleared land that became Plymouth. They later discovered that this was the site of A Patuxet Indian Village. (whose Inhabitants had died of Disease). The 102 people (one-third of them children) stepped ashore at Plymouth. The Pilgrims soon began Building their Settlement on the Slope of a Hill overlooking the Harbor. They Fought the Cold, Hunger, and Illness that gripped the Colony during the first Devastating Winter. By the Spring of 1621, 1/2 of the original Group had Died. Most of the Adults were in their 20'S and 30'S. About 1/3 of all Passengers on the Mayflower were Children. About half of All who Survived the First Year were under Sixteen. Of the 50 People who survived the first terrible Winter, over half were Children and there were only 4 Women. The First Thanksgiving What People call the First Thanksgiving, is the Pilgrims' Celebration of their Harvest sometime between September 21 and November 9, 1621. It was a Three-Day Feast, called a Harvest Home Celebration. There were about 140 people (90 Indian men and about 50 Pilgrims) Four adult women. (the only women left after the terrible first winter) Probably were in Charge of ALL the Cooking. On the Menu were sea bass, cod, wildfowl-duck, geese, or wild turkey; cornmeal; and five deer brought by the Indians. Vegetables and fruit were probably part of the meal also. Unfortunately, I didn't save the clipping. Could you please run it again? -- ELEANOR ALARCON, UNION, N.J. DEAR ELEANOR: With pleasure! O heavenly Father: We thank thee for food and remember the hungry. We thank thee for health and remember the sick. We thank thee for friends and remember the friendless. We thank thee for freedom and remember the enslaved. May these remembrances stir us to service that thy gifts to us may be used for others. Amen. ** ** ** Since this coming week is Thanksgiving, take just a moment to reflect upon all of the things for which you are thankful. How's your health? Not so good? Well, thank God you've lived this long. A lot of people haven't. You're hurting? Thousands -- maybe millions -- are hurting even more. (Have you ever visited a veterans hospital? A rehabilitation clinic for crippled children?) If you awakened this morning able to hear the birds sing, use your vocal cords to utter human sounds, walk to the breakfast table on two good legs, and read the newspaper with two good eyes, praise the Lord! A lot of people couldn't. How's your pocketbook? Thin? Well, most of the world is a lot poorer. No pensions, no welfare. No food stamps, no Social Security. In fact, one-third of the people in the world will go to bed hungry tonight. Are you lonely? The way to have a friend is to be one. If nobody calls you, pick up the phone and call someone. Are you concerned about our country's future? Hooray! Our system has been saved by such concern. Our country may not be a rose garden, but neither is it a patch of weeds. Freedom rings! Look and listen. You can worship at the church of your choice, cast a secret ballot, and you can even criticize your government without fearing a knock on the head or a knock on the door at midnight. And if you want to live under a different system, you are free to go. There are no walls or fences -- nothing to keep you here. A final thought: Want an instant high? The surest cure for the holiday blues is doing something nice for someone. Why not call a person who lives alone and invite him or her to share dinner? Better yet, call and say, "I'm coming to get you, and I'll see that you get home." (Some older people don't drive, and those who do may not like to be behind the wheel after dark.) Try it. And let me know the results. P.S. Special greetings to those of you in the military who wrote from remote corners of the world to tell me that you are using my prayer on this Thanksgiving Day. And, as is also the tradition, we'll find ourselves reflecting upon what we are most thankful for. As I become more of an adult, the life lessons I'm learning from life's let downs have come a long way in teaching me to accept and embrace the blessings that are mine. As I tuck my children safely beneath the warmth of a cozy quilt, may my prayers be of thanks for being given the opportunity to share the really important things in life-like the love, laughter, and comfort that the togetherness of family life brings. Help me to remember what a precious gift this is when I see helpless children living in despair; the pain of uncertainty etched across their sad, little faces. The longer I live the closer I come to realize that, more than money, expensive cars, or luxurious homes, it's the inner peace that comes from making a difference in someone else's life that is a priceless gift that fills a person's soul with contentment. Grant me the compassion Lord, to lend a helping hand when one is needed; not to judge situations on looks alone, and to greet each new day as an opportunity to spread a little sunshine to otherwise gloomy days. Thank you Lord for teaching me that for every journey in this life there is a purpose, and that it is up to me to find the beauty and joy in each message, no matter how big or how small. An unasked for hug from a toddler, a teen who truly cares about what you have to say, and the ability to find patience when life gets over whelmingly crazy, are all wonderful gifts that fill my heart with gratitude for all that is mine to cherish. Thank you Lord for the children who love me, for the loving husband who works so hard to give his family the best of who he is. Devotion and trust are powerful attributes that neither fame nor fortune can buy, but I am wealthy Lord because they are mine. Life is not perfect but it was never meant to be. Instead it is a constant lesson in the making. And as we toast to each other's health and happiness this Thanksgiving holiday, I am ever more aware of the lessons I am still learning. Through your grace Lord, I am reminded that you are not finished with me yet. But, most of all Father, thank you for the person I am, and for the person I've yet to become. Really, this would have led to my quitting graduate school altogether. I didn't want to talk about my reasons, and what I saw as my "weakness" in not being able to finish the class. Yet he talked me into coming into his office to talk the following day anyway. I went cautiously, not sure of this learned man who was a bit intimidating in class. But because he called me in, I felt it necessary to explain why I would not finish the assignment. Without that assignment, I would ultimately fail his class -- which had led me to believe I should just quit. He listened to my sorrow around my recent separation, handed me his Kleenex box, and said little. When I finished telling him why I had neither the energy nor the desire to continue down this path, he told me that he was willing to work within the time frame that I needed to heal. He would allow me to turn in my assignments late, and even take his final the next term, as long as I would agree to "stick it out" and call upon him when I needed. He believed I could take the "life lessons" from my divorce, and apply them to my degree. You see, I was working on getting my Masters in Social Work, and he didn't want to see me quit on his watch. This gift of understanding, this reprieve, came from a professor who, while in class, seemed rigid and unbending around his assignments. I struggled through that semester, never again needing to call upon my professor, and finishing my course work. I even graduated with an MSW. The real lesson from my divorce for me came early, with the understanding heart and sympathy this professor extended to me when I was in deep pain. I really was almost too proud to call upon someone for the sympathy I so needed. He gave me an hour of attention that kept me on track. It was such a simple thing, and indeed within the realm of his vocation, but it impacted me for years. Isn't that often the case, that what we give so easily, is sometimes the most difficult for someone else to ask for? I never thanked him, and can't even now recall his name. But his kindness lives on, as I extend greater sympathy to those who seem afraid to ask, to those who need only a little bit of help to make a difference. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From AndyChaps: "we are each of us angels with but one wing, and can only fly by embracing each other" _ -Luciano Decrescenzo _ *"_"* *"_"* /_ `\ _..._ _..._ /`_`\ |/ `-.| .' There were times when I wondered if I would make it to today; but I did! And because I did I'm going to celebrate! Today, I'm going to celebrate what an unbelievable life I have had so far: the accomplishments, the many blessings, and, yes, even the hardships because they have served to make me stronger. I will go through this day with my head held high and a happy heart. I will marvel at God's seemingly simple gifts: the morning dew, the sun, the clouds, the trees, the flowers, the birds. Today, none of these miraculous creations will escape my notice. Today, I will share my excitement for life with other people. I'll make someone smile. I'll go out of my way to perform an unexpected act of kindness for someone I don't even know. Today, I'll give a sincere compliment to someone who seems down. I'll tell a child how special he is, and I'll tell someone I love just how deeply I care for them and how much they mean to me. Today is the day I quit worrying about what I don't have and start being grateful for all the wonderful things God has already given me. I'll remember that to worry is just a waste of time because my faith in God and his Divine Plan ensures everything will be just fine. Tonight, before I go to bed, I'll go outside and raise my eyes to the heavens. I will stand in awe at the beauty of the stars and the moon, and I will praise God for these magnificent treasures. As the day ends and I lay my head down on my pillow, I will thank the Almighty for the best day of my life. And I will sleep the sleep of a contented child, excited with expectation because I know tomorrow is going to be The Best Day Of My Life! -<>- <*****> ."^". ,;;;, ."^". {.'^'.\//a a\\/.'^'.} {{ (( L )) }} {{ \ = / }} {{ .-'\`-`/'-. }} {{ / \_/ \ }} {{ / \ }} {{/ /| |\ \}} {| | | | | |} {\___| >===;=< |___/} {{(_/ | : | \_)}} {{ _/| : |\_ }} {{ _/ | : | \_ }} jgs {{/ | : | \}} `-` | : | `-` | : | | : | | : | |___:_| (_/ \_) >DEFINITIONS FOR MY HUSBAND ON THANKSGIVING DAY **PLAYBOOK: Also known as my cookbook, to be kept in plain sight at all times, if the book gets moved, the game could get ugly. **OFFSIDES: Silverware is to be set next to the plates... off to the side dear, not tossed in the middle of the table in a heap, for all to scramble for. **GAME TIME: This is when the food must all be on the table, at the same time, at the same temperature (preferably hot) so that the *teams* may meet at the arena (Table) for the coach to say the prayer. **TEAM SPIRIT: That which shall be upheld until the END of the game. It is gratitude in action. * It is thanking God for the gift of life by living it triumphantly. * It is thanking God for your talents and abilities by accepting them as obligations to be invested for the common good. * It is thanking God for all that men and women have done for you by doing things for others. * It is thanking God for opportunities by accepting them as a challenge to achievement. * It is thanking God for happiness by striving to make others happy. * It is thanking God for beauty by helping to make the world more beautiful. * It is thanking God for inspiration by trying to be an inspiration to others. * It is thanking God for health and strength by the care and reverence you show your body. * It is thanking God for the creative ideas that enrich life by adding your own creative contributions to human progress. * It is thanking God for each new day by living it to the fullest. * It is thanking God by giving hands, arms, legs, and voice to your thankful spirit. * It is adding to your prayers of thanksgiving, acts of thanksliving. ~Wilferd A. Kerry S. Doyal - Grace Bible Church - www.GetGraced.org) [Edited] Want to act and look like an unbeliever? Care to have core traits that make you indistinguishable from atheists or agnostics? Good news! It doesn't take becoming a serial killer, a suicide terrorist or a child abuser. According to Romans 1:21-23 all it takes is... well, read it for yourself: "For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened." "Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles" (NIV). It is one small step for man yet one giant leap for mankind from not honoring and thanking God to becoming foolish and functional idolaters. To know about God and not give Him due credit (glory) or properly thank Him is to be no different than your run of the mill atheist or blatant idolater. Ouch! Arguably, the fearful pagan sacrificing chickens to appease an unknown Creator is closer to true worship of God than we educated, technology driven, pure materialists who live without properly praising or thanking Him. To ascribe credit for one person's work to another is to be guilty of lying. In this case, it is bearing false witness about our Ultimate Neighbor. It is to misrepresent the one (or impersonal forces) who did not do the work - giving them undue credit. To not laud the Lord is to strip away His deserved praise and thanks - the One who did the work. Me taking credit for the Mona Lisa or the Magna Carta is beyond funny. It is insulting to all involved. One of the dangers of pure atheistic evolution (life came from time, chance and non-living matter) is to ascribe some of God's best work to nothing but cosmic luck. To assert that our beautiful mountains, that awesome sky and those humbling oceans "just happened" is to mute their testimony of their Creator. In rejecting the work of the Creator, we become deaf to the heavens when they declare the glory of God (see Psalms 19 & 8). Nature's songs of praise cannot be heard because there is no One to whom it would sing. Even if it were left up to the rocks to cry out, we could not hear them if they did. Beyond sad and tragic, that is blasphemous - if not by design then by default. It is not the loss of Adam and Eve to evolution that is most tragic - though the biblical / theological magnitude of that cannot be overstated. It is that God is banished from the garden of our weedy hearts, leaving us less than fig-leaf clad. And we are left to turn the created into the Creator. Seeing God for Who He is - His awesome character - is the basis of praise. We give or "ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name" (Ps. 29:2). To understate His greatness in any realm naturally limits and minimizes the rightful praise we offer Him. Thanksgiving focuses on what God has given or provided us. It flows from our acknowledging that every good and perfect gift has indeed come down from our heavenly Father (James 1:17). We thank Him for gifts He bestows because of Who He is, for what He has done for us, or mercifully, not done or allowed to happen to us. Is gratitude a struggle for you? Could some of it be dealt with by remembering Who is Whom and whom is not? Do you need in any way to re-enthrone the Creator, knowing our rightfully jealous God will not share His glory with anyone? Careful meditation on passages like John 1:3 and Colossians 1:16, 17 might help refocus your heart. A focus on God - rather than mere gratitude or guilt for all our stuff, health and "blessings" - will best restore us to being people who are truly thankful in ways that give Him more glory. It is then we will do as the psalmists says: "Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice." (Psalm 105:1-3 - NIV) "Ascribe to the LORD, O mighty ones, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength." (Psalm 29:1) Portions of the Original Thanksgiving Day Proclamation from Abraham Lincoln: "In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in the theater of military conflict, while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the field of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the ship; the ax has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than theretofore. Population has steadily increased notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battlefield, and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow- citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union. In testimony wherof I have herunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed." [Signed] A. Lincoln No wonder that Mr. Lincoln was so greatly used of God in a critical time in American history. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, "Let my brother have the first pancake. I can wait." Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, "Ryan, you be Jesus." A father was at the beach with his children when his four-year-old son ran up to him, grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore, where a seagull lay dead in the sand. "Daddy, what happened to him?" the son asked. "He died and went to Heaven," the dad replied. The boy thought a moment and then said, "Did God throw him back down?" After the church service a little boy told the pastor, "When I grow up, I'm going to give you some money." "Well, thank you," the pastor replied, "but why?" "Because my daddy says you're one of the poorest preachers we've ever had." A wife invited some people to dinner. At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and said, "Would you like to say the blessing?" "I wouldn't know what to say," the girl replied. "Just say what you hear Mommy say," the wife answered. The daughter bowed her head and said, "Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?" A mother was teaching her three-year-old The Lord's Prayer. For several evenings at bedtime, the child repeated it after the mother. Then one night the child was ready to solo. The mother listened with pride to the carefully enunciated words, right up to the end. "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us some e-mail"... A little boy opened the big and old family Bible with fascination, and looked at the old pages as he turned them. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible, and he picked it up and looked at it closely. It was an old leaf from a tree that had been pressed in between the pages. "Momma, look what I found," the boy called out. "What have you got there, dear?" his mother asked. With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered: "I think it's Adam's suit!" A father was reading Bible stories to his young son. He read, "The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city, but his wife looked back and was turned to salt." His son then asked, "What happened to the flea?" A three-year-old boy went with his dad to see a litter of kittens. On returning home, he breathlessly informed his mother, "There were 2 boy kittens and 2 girl kittens." How did you know?" his mother asked. "Daddy picked them up and looked underneath," he replied. "I think it's printed on the bottom." Another three-year-old put his shoes on by himself. His mother noticed that the left shoe was on the right foot. She said, "Son, your shoes are on the wrong feet." He looked up at her with a raised brow and said, "Don't kid me, Mom. They're the only feet I got!." On the first day of school, about mid-morning, the kindergarten teacher said, "If anyone has to go to the bathroom, hold up two fingers." A little voice from the back of the room asked, "How will that help?" A mother and her young son returned from the grocery store and began putting away the groceries. The boy opened the box of animal crackers and spread them all over the table. "What are you doing?" his mother asked. "The box says not to eat them if the seal is broken" the boy explained. "I'm looking for the seal." ========================================================== |_| _, _ _ ___ | |(_||_)|_)\_| .'=:-\ ___ | | ._| /.='( ` | |_ _ ,_ |/ , _ . .,_ _ /. ^=.'-._..---. | | |(_|| ||\/_)(_|||/|| |(_| | =^.'=.'^//"(_`\\)8, ._| ._| |^.'=' .=||/' `\||;8.-' \'.^,=^'.||; ; ||8/:_,_ give thanks... And then I woke another day And carelessly went on my way, The whole day long I did not try To wipe a tear from any eye. I did not try to share the load Of any brother on the road. I did not even go to see The sick man just next door to me. Yet once again when day was done I prayed, "O Lord, bless everyone." But as I prayed, into my ear there came a voice that whispered clear, "Pause now, my child, before you pray. Whom have you tried to bless today? God's sweetest blessings always go by hands that serve him here below." And then I hid my face and cried, "Forgive me, God, I have not tried, But let me live another day and I will live the way I pray." ~ Author Unknown (¯`v´¯) `*.¸.*´ ¸.•´¸.•*¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ .•´ ¸¸.•¨¯`•.
