"Hey," my step-dad would say out of the blue. "Hey what?" my mom would automatically reply. I had noticed nothing more was generally said, but then I was young and didn't pay too much attention to the "old fogies." Years passed by uneventfully, I was now in my twenties and still I would hear their apparently meaningless conversation. "Hey." "Hey what?" For over 25 years I heard this exchange, never knowing what it meant. Quite truthfully, I never knew it was supposed to be anything other than a greeting of some odd sort. I didn't hear it frequently, only occasionally, therefore I didn't really spend a lot of time dwelling on the custom either. Around the ripe old age of 35, which was quite a bit older than one of the "old fogies" of my childhood, and barely a decade younger than the other, I learned what the expressions were meant to convey. Saying, "Hey," meant, "I love you." Replying, "Hey what?" meant, "I love you too." For 27 years now, this has been their secret way of expressing the depth of their love for one another without anyone being the wiser. That day in class, I told the children what they were to do, Make a Valentine for someone, who is close to you. Someone who you look up to and someone you admire, Someone who is helping you become what you desire. Then I told the children, print a poem that is your own, Then leave them on my desk to read, before you all go home. Tomorrow, you can take them home to give to those you love, But first I'd like to read them to see, who you're thinking of. As I sat and read the poems, the little cards weren't bad, Some were for grandparents and then some for mom or dad. Some had standard verses, "Roses red and violets blue," While others had cute verses, that the children made up new. But then I started reading one and tears filled up my eyes, I never had expected this; it caught me by surprise. "I love my mom and dad, she wrote, but you are special too, That is why I want to make this Valentine for you. I heard my mom once say, you are a blessing in disguise, The way you love to teach and help to open children's eyes. So you will know and understand, 'cause next year I'll be gone, You've help me to be who I am; you are a special one." I closed the little card from her and I just sat and cried, This precious fourth grade girl had done more than she realized. A teacher doesn't earn a lot, there's much they can't afford, But all the money in the world can't match this great reward. To know you make a difference when you teach a little child, And know you have influenced them does make it all worthwhile. I know that all who teach will never earn themselves great wealth, Their riches come from knowing one has given of one's self. To know we make a difference, having helped a child soar, To know we had a part will be our "Valentine reward." -- James "PoppyK" Kisner ___________________________________________ PoppyK is a Heartwarmer Gem and a valued contributor to our publications. The renown teacher and author Dr. David McLennon tells a story of his very first job in a small town general store. This was the day before mails and supermarket chains at least it was in his community. At age thirteen he was hired as a handy boy. He would sweep the flour, bag items for customers, put up stock. On one particular Saturday, he recalled., he heard the owner say to one of the clerks "It's that time of the year again, it's time to take inventory." Dr. McLennon Wrote that this was a word that had not yet entered into his vocabulary. When an opportune moment arrived, he went up to the kindly older man and asked, Sir, what is an inventory? Patiently the owner explained that it was a time when you made a list of everything that you had--from groceries on the shelves to wrapping paper and string. Still somewhat puzzled, the young McLennon then asked, Why? "Well, responded the owner, its easy to forget exactly how much you have each year. Every now and then you have to take an inventory just to see what all you have." That little story, to me, pretty well sums up what Thanksgiving is all about. It is a time when each of us needs to ask ourselves the question: Have I taken inventory of my life lately? Have I made an effort to count all the things that I do have in life instead of complaining about the things that I don't have. It is a good exercise especially when we are of a mind to brood or whine in self pity. Have you taken inventory lately? What I am suggesting here is not some shallow "count your blessings" platitude. But from time to time, in a genuine kind of a way, we need to sit down and do some talking to ourselves about all of the gifts and opportunities and challenges that God has given each one of us. Perhaps there is a deep underlying wisdom in the children's poem that says: "Count your blessings one by one, and you might be surprised what the Lord has done." -<>- , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' >Start with the Faith You Have [The boy's father said,] "... If you can do anything, do it. Have a heart and help us!" Jesus said, "If? There are no 'ifs' among believers. Anything can happen." No sooner were the words out of his mouth than the father cried, "Then I believe. Help me with my doubts!" Mark 9:22-24 (MSG) *** *** *** *** Is it possible to be filled with faith and doubt at the same time? Yes! You can have faith that God wants you to do something and still be scared to death. Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is going ahead and doing what you're called to do in spite of your fear. You have to begin with the faith you already have: it may be just a little, but you start there. A beautiful example of this is the story of the man who brought his sick son to Jesus in Mark 9. Jesus looked at the man and said, "I can heal your son. If you will believe, I will heal him." The father then makes a classic statement: "Lord, I do believe. Help me overcome my unbelief." Have you ever felt like that? "Lord, I have some faith. But I also have some doubts." This man was filled with faith and doubt, yet despite his honest doubts, he went ahead and asked Jesus for a miracle. And he got his miracle – Jesus healed his son. Mustard seed faith moves mountains. No matter how weak or how frail you think your faith is, it's enough to get you through what you're facing because your "little faith" is in a big God. Matthew 17:20 says, "If you have faith as small as the mustard seed, nothing will be impossible to you." That's not a lot of faith; in fact, it's just a little faith. But what else does that verse teach? "If you have faith as the mustard seed, you can say to the mountain, 'Move' and it will be moved." Mustard seed faith moves mountains. Don't get this reversed; we tend to read this verse backward; we want it to say, "If you have faith like a mountain, you can move a mustard seed" – as if it takes enormous faith to do a very little task. Everybody has faith. You had faith this morning when you ate your cereal – faith that your spouse didn't put poison in your granola! You had faith when you sat down in your computer chair – faith that it wouldn't collapse. Everybody has faith; the difference is what you put your faith in. Sometimes people will tell me they don't want to surrender to Jesus until all their questions are answered; they don't want to make a commitment until every thing is understand. God wants you start with the faith you have; and based on the example of the mustard seed, you don't need a whole lot of faith to do great things for God. You just need a little. So here's a trustworthy equation: Little Faith + Big God = Huge Results! · You take your little faith; "Lord, I believe! Help me with my unbelief!" · And you place your faith in our big God, · And then he'll show you how he works out huge results. -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment: Babes In Christ http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/BibleStudy/babesinchrist.html Bible Study Menu http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/BibleStudy/BibleStudy.html What Is Love 2? http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/wlove2.html Dreamy Ladies! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/dreamy.html Telephone Sheep Art http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/phonesheep.html Hand Painting Art 2 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/hpaint2.html About Dogs And People http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/aboutdogs.html The Black Dot http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/blackdot.html Dogs!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/dogs.html My Precious Child!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/mychild.html Angel Wing Decoys!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/angel.html Playing With Words!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/wordplay.html God's Most Beautiful!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/mostbeautiful.html God's Bumper Stickers!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/gbumper.html Church Mouse Wisdom!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/churchmouse.html Cameo Dogs!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/cameodogs.html Dog Warriors!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/dogwarriors.html Attitude Is Everything 5!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/attitude5.html Beautiful Cactus Blooms!- http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/cactusblooms.html -<>- >Please Visit This Link to Get New Traffic For Shangrala :) Fun Pages http://www.funpageexchange.com/go.php?uid=3559 -<>- >From Our Friend Geniann :) She sent us a fun one we have here... In Phoenix, Arizona, a 26-year-old mother stared down at her 6 year old son, who was dying of terminal leukemia. Although her heart was filled with sadness, She also had a strong feeling of determination. Like any parent, she wanted her son to grow up & fulfill all his dreams. Now that was no longer possible.. the leukemia would see to that. But she still wanted her son's dream to come true. She took her son's hand and asked, 'Billy, did you ever think about what you wanted to be once you grew up? Did you ever dream and wish what you would do with your life?' Mommy, 'I always wanted to be a fireman when I grew up.' Mom smiled back and said, 'Let's see if we can make your wish come true.' Later that day she went to her local fire Department in Phoenix Arizona, where she met Fireman Bob, who had a heart as big as Phoenix. She explained her son's final wish and asked if it might be possible to give her 6 year-old son a ride around the block on a fire engine. Fireman Bob said, Look, we can do better than that. If you'll have your son ready at seven o'clock Wednesday morning, we'll make him an honorary Fireman for the whole day. He can come down to the fire station, eat with us, go out on all the fire calls, the whole nine yards! And if you'll give us his sizes, we'll get a real fire uniform for him, with a real fire hat - not a toy - one-with the emblem of the Phoenix Fire Department on it, and a yellow slicker like we wear and rubber boots.' They're all manufactured right here in Phoenix, so we can get them fast. Three days later Fireman Bob picked up Billy, Dressed him in his uniform and escorted him from his hospital bed to the waiting hook and ladder truck. Billy got to sit on the back of the truck and help steer it back to the fire station. He was in heaven. There were three fire calls in Phoenix that day And Billy got to go out on all three calls. He rode in the different fire engines, the Paramedic's' van, and even the fire chief's car. He was also videotaped for the local news program. Having his dream come true, with all the love and attention that was lavished upon him, so deeply touched Billy, that he lived three months longer than any doctor thought possible. One night all of his vital signs began to drop dramatically and the head nurse, who believed in the hospice concept - that no one should die alone, began to call the family members to the hospital. Then she remembered the day Billy had spent as a Fireman, so she called the Fire Chief and asked if it would be possible to send a fireman in uniform to the hospital to be with Billy as he made his transition. The chief replied, 'We can do better than that. We'll be there in five minutes.... Will you please do me a favor? When you hear the sirens screaming and see the Lights flashing, will you announce over the PA system that there is not a fire?' 'It's the department coming to see one of its finest members one more time. And will you open the window to his room?' About five minutes later a hook and ladder truck arrived at the hospital and extended its ladder up to Billy's third floor open window -------- fire-fighters climbed up the ladder into Billy's room with his mother's permission, they hugged him and held him and told him how much they LOVED him. With his dying breath, Billy looked up at the fire chief and said, 'Chief, am I really a fireman now?' 'Billy, you are, and The Head Chief, Jesus, is holding your hand,' the chief said with those words, Billy smiled and said, 'I know, He's been holding my hand all day, and The angels have been singing..' He closed his eyes one last time. My instructions were to send this to at least four People that I wanted God to bless and I picked you. She took such painstaking joy in her beautiful gardens, and each component of her yard vividly illustrated her passion for plants. When she and Grandpa moved from one part of southern California to another, she viewed her new garden as a new adventure and immediately went to work. However, there was a fruit tree in the middle of the yard that refused to bear fruit despite Grandma's nurturing. As a voracious reader, she studied all she could on fruit trees in an attempt to find some hint to encourage her fruit tree to blossom. She spoke to the tree, sang to the tree, reasoned with this tree -- all to no avail. Finally, she contacted the California Department of Agriculture and asked to speak to a manager. She explained her challenges to the man on the other end of the phone, took notes on his every word, and determined that she would adhere to his advice. After reciting a long list of hints, all of which she had already done, he made a dramatic suggestion. He told her to hit the base of the tree with a broomstick "to stimulate its roots". Concerned about what the neighbors might think of a woman in her seventies beating a tree, Grandma looked both ways before taking the end of a broom to the stubborn fruit tree. She knew that the vibrations would indeed find their way down to the atrophied root system and invigorate the tree, but she doubted that fruit would be the result of such an unorthodox approach. To her shock and amazement, the next spring the tree bore much fruit. Her grandchildren enjoyed the product of the tree for years to come, and each year the fruit was more plentiful and healthy. We would often laugh together at how silly this beautiful elderly woman must have looked to anyone watching as she hit the defenseless tree. The story will always serve as a great source of joy for our family. A few months before her death, when I was going through an especially difficult time, I called Grandma for advice. We reminisced about the "tree story" and she reminded me that it was the times of adversity for the tree that allowed its greatest strength and value to come to fruition. She lovingly reflected that my roots were being stimulated by the personal trials I was facing, and that I would be a more fruitful 'tree' because of them. She was not only an amazing gardener, she was a wise grandma. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Our Friend Melody :) , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' [Caution: Not for babes in Christ] http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/BibleStudy/babesinchrist.html Melody sent us some links that I'd like to respond to. Believe me, if he has an opportunity to do so, he will! Jesus reminds us of who the devil is and what his motives are: John 10: [10a] The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: Never tempt the devil or think you are more cunning than he is. Remember, he is far more experienced than you and has been around a whole lot longer than you. He knows how to pull the wool over your eye better than any one. He is the father of lies and deception. John 8: [44] Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. We are to be sober and vigilant not scared. 1 John 4: [4] Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. This does not mean we should be foolish. God directs us to: Eph.6: [13] Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. [14] Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; [15] And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; [16] Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. [17] And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: [18] Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; Verse 18 means we are to pray in the spirit - speaking in tongues not only for ourselves but for fellow Christians. This one time Paul was not at home and I was alone when a man came over wanting to know if we had a certain memory chip in stock. I let him into our computer area and let him see our stock of memory chips as I was uncertain if we did have what he needed. I was feeling OK with him, not feeling anything bad. Just a little concerned that we were alone. He asked a question as he was looking at the chips and I got closer to him. That was when something extremely odd happened. I began hearing myself speaking in tongues in my head silently. Now you who speak in tongues knows that it is our own freedom of will that directs when to speak in tongues. So this happening on it's own without me thinking about doing it, had me concerned and bewildered. I immediately stepped away from him. I told him that Paul would be able to help him better when he was here. He said he would come back later and he abruptly left. When he was gone, the automatic speaking in tongues in my head quit. I quickly asked God what this was about and was told that it was an alarm system. My spirit knew that he was anti-Christian and it was sounding off when I got close to him. In other words, he was opposite of me, the son of his father the devil. God asked me if I wanted Him to make sure this person never returned. And I said yes! I never saw him again. I've never had this happen again. The other night out of the blue she asked, "Mommy, the next time we go to get our hair cut, if the lady cuts my hair very short, will I be a baby again?" -- Cynthia of Downers Grover, Illinois Rebekah, 4, got into big trouble for something she did. A few minutes later as her mother was sitting down, steaming mad, Rebekah came into the room with a picture of blue hearts she had drawn with a crayon, all over the paper. Under each heart was a short vertical line. She said, "Mom, I'm really sorry about what I did. I want you to know I love you. Here are a bunch of hearts I drew for you. They have strings so that you can pick them up when you need one." Then she gave her mother a hug and left the room. -- Tiffani Schreiner (mother of Rebekah) of Bloomington, Minnesota Lelah stopped at her daughter's house and her 3-year-old great-grandson was there. Lelah said, "Seth, do you have a hug and a kiss for Great-grandma?" He said, "No." Lelah said, "Don't you give hugs and kisses anymore?" Seth, 3, was looking at Christmas books with Lelah. When Lelah asked him what he wanted for Christmas, Seth said, "A present and toys." Lelah told him he didn't need any toys because he had so many already. Seth replied, "I know, but Mom won't let me play with them. She wants them for decorations." Here is a "two-generation" story. Many years ago Sandra was doing her shopping with her (then) 4-year-old granddaughter in the shopping cart. Sandra picked up several packages of macaroni and put them in the cart. Carmen said, "Oh, Grandma, you got lots of macamonies!" To this day they all still love "macamonies and cheese." Fast-forward to 2005. Carmen now has a 4-year-old daughter named Isabelle. They were all enjoying ice tea. When Sandra started to rinse Isabelle's glass she noticed there was quite a bit of tea left in it. "Don't you want the rest of it?" Sandra asked. "No, Grandma," Isabelle said. "It has bugs in it." Last week Lydia was in the car and she asked her mother, "What do stealers look like?" Her mother told her they can look just like anyone. Lydia thought that wasn't right. He kept saying he had a "lurchee." Connie asked him to show her his "lurchee" and he said he could not -- unless she made him a peanut butter sandwich. Connie made the peanut butter sandwich. Then Martin told her he could not eat the sandwich because he had a "lurchee and that's why I can't have peanut butter." It finally dawned on Connie that he meant allergy.
