The same height, give or take a few strands of hair (I still had hair, Kurt didn't -- and my hair made me taller). We both cheered passionately for the same college football and professional basketball teams. We were even the same weight. But even though we both tipped the scales at about 240 pounds, Kurt carried most of his weight in muscular arms, massive shoulders and a strong, powerful torso. I carried most of my 240 pounds... uh... well... you know... lower. See what I mean? We had a lot in common – even though we were so different. The problem was, the differences between us were pretty divisive -- different religions, different educationaal backgrounds, different political perspectives, different lifestyles -- the kinds of things that don't HAVE to separate people but often do, especially when you pile them up on top of each other. The fact is, even though Kurt and I worked for the same company we probably wouldn't have ever met had we not been thrown together into an adversarial situation. Kurt was blue collar through and through, and was involved with his union in labor negotiations with the company. My collar was not only white, but I usually wore a tie around it. I didn't exactly sit on the other side of the negotiating table, but I worked for the company behind the scenes to coordinate communication efforts to employees, customers and the media. To say there was a certain amount of tension around the company during the period of labor negotiations is like saying there is a certain amount of tension these days around Jon and Kate. So the timing wasn't right for a new friendship to take root. But as Kurt and I interacted during the course of the weeks of negotiations, we found we could do so pleasantly, if not completely comfortably. He had a gruff exterior, but a quick and affable sense of humor, and I enjoyed the give and take of our brief conversations. At first we limited our comments to sports. That led to mention of our own respective athletic histories (his was impressive, mine was not). Which led to talk about our growing up years, which led to discussion of our families and eventually brought us full circle to the very subject we had been most steadfastly avoiding. "So what brought you here to the company?" I asked. "My Dad worked here," he said, simply. "My older brother still works here. I never really thought of working anywhere else." "Do you like it here?" I didn't intend it as a leading question, but given the circumstances, it sort of came out that way. He looked at me, as if he was trying to decide if I was trying to trap him. I guess he figured I wasn't smart enough to do that. "Yeah," he said. "I like it a lot. It's hard work, but it's good, honest work. Good pay, good benefits. The company's been good to us." I hesitated. I wanted to ask: Then why are you and your union brothers trying to cripple this company with excessive and unreasonable demands? I think he saw the question in my eyes. "Look, we all know it's a good company," he said, plainly, directly. "But it can be better. That's all we're trying to do. We just want to make it better." I think about Kurt every year at this time, when talk of Labor Day inevitably turns to a discussion of labor unions and whether or not they are still relevant in today's society. I'll leave that discussion to people who are a lot smarter than I am. But I'll always remember my experience with one devoted union member who sincerely appreciated having "good, honest work," and whose only desire was to make a good company better. Which, come to think of it, is one more thing we had in common. -- Joseph Walker ______________________________________________ Joe is a Heartwarmer Gem from Utah. ============================================================== >-->From Our Friends At TruthOrTradition: , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' Hello and God bless you! However, that is not what the Bible actually says and furthermore, it makes God out to be very unloving and unfair. In this teaching John Schoenheit explains what he means when he says that God is not in control as he shows from Scripture that what God wants often does not happen. The Devil has a lot of control, and people can defy and disobey God's will. Although the doctrine that God is in control is comforting to many people and therefore popular, we believe the truth declared in this teaching will help set people free from the harmful effects of this popular Christian misunderstanding. www.truthortradition.com/audio www.STFonline.org/podcast We are thankful for you! In these verses, Jesus shows us the utmost importance of being capable of self denial in order to be an effective disciple, accepting the top priority of the Kingdom of God… God is looking for people who put the truth as it is written in His word, before anything else, he wants people he can count on to do whatever he wants of them, whenever He wants it……Think about Noah……Do you think he was happy being taunted by his neighbors for building a ‘craft to’ sail in a land that had hardly seen rain! ? Let alone a river or a lake or a sea! He had no idea really, what he was doing,,he just followed Gods plans, Praise the Lord that He did other wise you and I would not be here….I could say’may have not been here’ but the truth is had Noah disobeyed? Well….we don’t know, maybe God would have just found ‘another Noah? But I doubt it, Bible says there was ONE righteous man….and his wife and sons and daughter in laws…Don’t lets get silly about this……the Truth IS the truth….In this world, no one really lives ‘happily ever after” it’s in the ‘next world’ that will happen…..We, you and I might well be ‘in’ this world, but we are as Christians, and as such… are not ‘of’ this world… God seeks people to hear Him and obey…. Abram gave all he had, picked up what he had and moved….he didn’t know where he was going, but He had faith in knowing, God would lead and guide him always… there are no personal fortunes in Gods plan for us, if we manage to ‘emass’ a little, that’s fine, if it’s done honestly and you pay your tithes, but BUT! You cant take it with you, hearses are not equipped with a tow bar and trailer…”leave your plows” is what Jesus is saying, and if HE calls you!..that’s just what he expects, no less and no more…It’s obedience to God’s word, that is the foundation of Gods kingdom… When Jesus mentions ‘the dead’ and burials, and he is telling us that it is more important for us, if we want to be disciples! That serving the ‘living’ is more important than serving the dead… People today, so much “time distant” to when He was here preaching, have lost the importance of His message and cannot see His implications…Jesus KNOWS how important the family relationship is! And so do TRUE and TRIED Christians! We HAVE to have our priorities right, if we do…there will be NO problem that can’t be handled, God does not give us more than we can handle, we might think so at times…but He doesn’t…Our ultimate loyalty, HAS to be to Christ Our Savior! But He does..and I am NOT watering down His words! Allow for a ‘Christian commitment, within the family...but still Christ MUST reign as Numero Uno! In our lives at ALL times... My own children have asked me about MY priorities, and they were disappointed to learn that I put God first, my wife and family second, and Church last….they would say I put Church first, but that’s because they think it is ‘church’ that stole me away from them, then I put their MOM second, Church again! 3rd! Haha! Then them 4th. I only serve ONE God and ONE Church! What they fail to understand is that when I say I love my wife This MUCH!(raise my hands in the air)….and now, because I know of God’s love, I love her ‘this much’…. (Climbing on the roof to reach as high as I can!) And that is sad, for them and for me, that they ! my own kids! cannot see the extent of God love for us... nd no one will, if they begin to measure God’s love, by our love...How many of us would allow our kids to die the way Jesus died for what at times, seems to be for no reasonable reason? God loves us not because of ourselves, but ‘in spite’ of ourselves. Br Tony --- ...Thank you Tony. I just keep thinking of that little 'submit' of James 4: 7 -- 'Submit [addict] yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. We are to 'submit' to God FIRST, which allows us to 'resist' the devil. If we do this, the devil will 'flee' from us. Parents have to put God first so that everything else for not only themselves but for their family will fall into place. If parents don't put God first then all sorts of problems can happen for the entire family as a whole. Your children should love, honor and respect you more for being a Godly parent who abided by the Word of God for their sakes rather then a parent who selfishly did whatever they wanted unto their own lusts and desires. Submit - addict yourselves to God. That doesn't sound like someone who is just thinking of God once a week at a building we now call a church. If you are putting God first in everything you do then you are doing the perfect Will of the Father. The head of the family putting God first means everyone's needs shall be taken care of totally and completely as best as any parent can give. After a few blocks of turning this way and that, seeing none of the places I expected to see, I was thinking I might be lost. Another 15 minutes and I was sure. I called my son, who was expecting me later in the day, and explained my predicament. He asked where I was and I confessed that I had no idea, but assured him that eventually I would find my way out. He said, "Too bad you didn't think to rent a car with GPS." It was one of those 'duh' moments. My car did come with a portable GPS unit, but it was still in the glove compartment. I hadn't even thought of it. I pulled over, plugged it in, entered the address I was looking for, and within a minute a friendly voice in the little box was directing me to the right place. I actually doubted the directions a couple of times, but it turns out that the GPS knew the way better than me. Eventually I heard the words, "Arriving at destination on left..." It reminds me of what we so often do. We think we know how to get where we want to go, but get lost with our own dumb decisions. Then we get even more lost with even dumber decisions. All the time we have a place we can go for directions, but for some reason we neglect to look. The Lord says, "I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you." (Psalm 32:8) God has promised to guide us step by step through this journey, through our relationships and through our careers and through our finances and through our personal lives. He speaks to us through his Word and through the wisdom of spiritual leaders. Too often we neglect to listen, preferring to keep making wrong turns instead. If you're feeling a little lost in some areas of life, and the turns you take keeping leading you where you don't want to be, stop for a moment today, and open your heart to his voice. Let his Word direct you to the next step you need to take. He will guide you along the best pathway for your life. — Steve May --- ...See this teaching... It cautioned: To Avoid Injury: "Read Owner’s Manual first; stop if you feel faint, dizzy, or short of breath." At first they seemed unnecessary, but then it struck me. While the instructions held obvious application to my physical condition, they also held subtle application to my spiritual condition. As we run the “race marked out for us,” here’s how we might protect against spiritual injury. Read Owner’s Manual first. Each one of us has been wonderfully made, specially designed, and set apart for specific purposes. To best understand who we are, how we operate, and how we’re to serve in the Body, we need to carefully examine the Scriptures and understand our Maker’s intentions. His thoughts on us are the ones that matter in this race. If we jump into running without a clear understanding of Him and His will, we risk injury to ourselves and to those we serve. Are you taking the warning seriously? Second Timothy 3:16,17 says “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the [wo]man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” How are you being equipped on a daily basis for the run ahead of you? Stop if you feel faint. When I think of “faint” in light of my spiritual condition, I think of the strength of my heart—the ability to carry out what the Lord has called me to with courage and perseverance. When I’m faint in my faith, I might be far from the Lord and running out of my own strength. Or I might be focusing on my fears instead of taking courage in the truth of the Word—and getting very tired. This faintness or “fatigue” in the faith is a warning sign I can’t afford to ignore as a leader; there’s too much at stake. Have you felt faint while running lately? Through Isaiah, we’re told that those “who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” (40:31). And through Jeremiah, we’re told the Lord will “refresh the weary and satisfy the faint” (31:25). How are you finding your hope and strength in Him? Stop if you feel dizzy. When I’m dizzy, I have little to no ability to see my surroundings correctly. Something is wrong with my sense of balance. And though my surroundings haven’t changed, my balance issue makes it seem as though everything is spinning or moving. In this state, it’s nearly impossible to stand, let alone try to continue running. Have you ever experienced spiritual “dizziness”? Have you ever felt as though you were groping for more balance while everything seemed to be spinning out of your control? Lack of clarity and focus will pull us down and render us ineffective. The writer of Hebrews offered this encourage- ment for gaining proper focus while running: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith” (12:2). Things come into focus when we spend time with Jesus, and follow the example of His life. What are you seeing in Him today? Stop if you feel short of breath. When I think of spiritual breathing, I think of the Holy Spirit. And being short on the presence and leading of the Holy Spirit in my life is a sure sign that death is close at hand. Without His revival, I can count on my race coming to a quick close, whether or not I’m ready or I’ve finished well. Depending on the presence and filling of the Holy Spirit to propel and direct me in this race is a matter of life and death, both for me and those I serve. Have you felt short of breath—short on the Holy Spirit’s power? Ephesians 1:13,14 promises us that: “Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession— to the praise of his glory.” As believers, the Holy Spirit dwells within us. The challenge is in heeding Him more fully, inhaling Him more deeply through the Word, and running more obediently in the direction He points us. Far from being rules that keep us out of the race, heeding these preventive warnings ensures that we’ll continue running well until the very end. As we remember to read our Owner’s Manual first, and pay attention to possible danger signs, we’ll find ourselves victorious at the end. Run well! Sometimes we talked quietly other times we were just together in silence. But our walks lost their glow when, after an illness, I had to walk as therapy. It changed our gait, our buoyancy. Moreover, it was changing my attitude. What's the use, I thought. It's doing no good. Then one day a little note arrived in the mail. It said: "Keep it you two lovebirds! You make my day as you pass my window every afternoon. Looking so fit and happy. I am a shut-in and don't know what I would do without the inspiration you give. Born in Nebraska, she was a generalpractitioner who lived in California. Interestinglyenough, her claim to fame lies outside the world of medicine. An accident was the trigger that got her thinking about making our highways safer. Her car was sideswiped, and she determined to do something about cars that crowded others off the road.Driving on a road that bulged down its center, Dr.McCarroll noticed that the bulge helped to keep motorists on their own side of the road. That gave her an idea. She tried persuading the town council to "paint a line down the middle of the road" to set an example and "lead the nation in public safety." She got the typical bureaucratic response. However, she was someone who would not take no for an answer. So she took her idea to the local women's club. The vote was unanimous in support of the project. Still, she continued to face bureaucratic stubbornness for seven long years before her idea was implemented. In 1924 the California Highway Commission agreed toexperiment with a centerline on two sections of Route 99. Accidents on both test stretchesdiminished dramatically, and soon the entire stateboasted McCarroll lines on its highways. Most of the world has since followed suit. Then on top of that my husband suffered an injury at work that made things even worse. My husband has always helped anyone who asked him. At times he fixed cars for other people for hours after a 14-hour workday, charging nothing. He just did whatever he could do to help out. Yet no one we had helped had remembered us, as our own cupboard quickly grew bare -- and it deeply hurt. We were losing all hope, and facing the prospect of becoming homeless is scary. Our daughter is the light of our lives, she was teaching herself to read at that time. She especially loved books, and learning to spell the new words in them. (As normal parents do, we brag to anyone who will listen!) We tried to keep our financial fears to ourselves, so she wouldn't sense that something was upsetting us. She's a happy child, and we wanted her to remain that way. One Saturday in mid-August, when I opened the blinds in the morning I noticed a box on the bench in front of my house. Curious, I hurried outside to get it. Inside, there were so many books for my daughter, I couldn't even begin to count them! On top of them was a key chain, a carved wooden fish -- a symbol of our religion. I hung it on the wall on a nail by my daughter's breakfast nook, and explained the symbolism to her. Even though she's a normally very curious child, she left it right where I hung it I asked family members if they left us a box, and no one knew what I was talking about. So this gift was from someone I like to call our "Anonymous Angel". Many of the books were in such perfect condition that we no longer need worry about having something to give my daughter for her birthday. The box may have been filled with books -- but it also filled us all with hope. Help arrives in mysterious ways, and while our bills still faced us, we needed be reminded that we're always being looked out for. It took a kind, generous person and a box of books to help us remember that we need not worry, because we are never alone. It made my whole family's day to know that someone we don't even know personally cared enough to give such a gift from their heart to our daughter. =======HeoricStories======= >-->From LaughAndLift: / _, ,_ M\M"_,, `"MMMMMm._ `/MMMMMMP^^", MPTMMM`M `-. .'" (Author Unknown) The preacher placed two identical jars on the table next to the pulpit. He quoted 1 Samuel 16:7 'The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." "These jars came from the same factory, were made of the same materials, and can hold the same amount. But they are different," he explained. Then he upset one and it oozed out honey. He turned over the other, and vinegar spilled out. "When a jar is upset, whatever is in it comes out. Until the jars were upset, they looked alike. The difference was within, and could not be seen. When they were upset, their contents were revealed. Until we are upset we put on a good front. But when we are upset, we reveal our innermost thoughts and attitudes, for 'out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.'" (Luke 6:45) What if someone tipped you over today?? What would flow out?? Would you reveal the "honey" of grace and patience, or the "vinegar" of anger and sarcasm? "Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins." (1Peter 4:8) Have a terrific day knowing that the one who upsets you may be just looking for some honey - Don't give them vinegar! For each of us the time is coming when we shall have nothing but God. Health and wealth and friends and hiding places will be swept away, and we shall have only God. To the man of pseudo faith that is a terrifying thought, but to real faith it is one of the most comforting thoughts the heart can entertain." - A. W.
