Smith I am sitting here still sometimes pinching myself, still awed over my miracle. Often overwhelmed with happiness over my miracle. Mother's Day this year is finally going to be a happy day. For many years it wasn't. When I was 22 years old, I found out I was pregnant. I was SO happy. I made so many plans, saw my doctor, ate well and did everything I was supposed to do. But then, in what seemed like the blink of an eye, I lost my baby. I was just 21 weeks pregnant when my little boy, Robert, was born way too soon for unknown reasons. He held on for 50 minutes and then died in my arms. It was the most devastating loss I'd ever been through. That was in 1991. Mother's Day was always especially difficult because it reminded me more of the future I'd lost with my baby than any other holiday. I always felt like something was missing from my life and though I have nieces and nephews that I love very much, it just wasn't the same as having a baby of my own. I tried to get pregnant again but it just didn't happen. Then, I found out a few years later that I have Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome and the doctors said I'd never get pregnant again. It took a long time but I eventually accepted this, dealt with the loss of my son the best I could, and got on with life. In 1995, I met my current husband, Kenny, whom I've been married to for more than 13 years now. On January 21, 2009, I went to my doctor because I just hadn't felt well for a month. I got a big surprise. My doctor said, "You're pregnant!" Kenny and I were shocked to say the least. I was also VERY worried that something would go wrong and I'd lose this baby too, but I did everything I could, had a lot of special tests and throughout my pregnancy things went fine, for the most part. I kept hoping and praying this baby, whom I learned at 16 weeks was a boy, would live because I knew that at age 40 and with both PCOS and type 2 diabetes, this was my last chance to have a baby of my own. I also didn't think I could handle losing another baby. On September 10, 2009 at 5:17pm, our beautiful baby was born. At age 56, Kenny became a father and at almost 41 years old I became a mother. What a joy it was to hear his first cries and to know that he was healthy and alive! His name is also Kenny and he's a beautiful baby and other than having congenital cataracts and needing 5 eye surgeries, he is doing very well. I so look forward to celebrating Mother's Day this year and am so thankful for my little miracle. It is my hope and prayer that other couples that have been told they'll never have a baby will one day get their miracle, even if it happens later in life. -- Sherry A. Asked to describe someone she had met or something she had seen, she would brighten the facts with little exaggerations until her own eloquence dazzled her into stopping. Before her very limited audience - my father and me - she would turn into a diva of divagation, perhaps to fill the voids my father's reserve created. Though irked by this habit, I judged it less a failing than a sort of misspent generosity. At least she never had to give court testimony. A hopeless compulsion to unravel her descriptive embroidery probably drove me to writing nonfiction. I still have to slap myself to remember that there is no such thing. Just when I thought I had the knack of discerning useful information in my mother's fog of words, she threw me. When I started college, she returned to secretarial work to help meet the expenses, after 20-odd years as a homemaker. On my first visit home from my out-of-state alma mater, my mother and I talked about her new job. Everything had changed since she got her certificate from the Katherine Gibbs School in Boston, which taught office skills. The new electric typewriters really got her going. She had never seen or even heard of anything like them. "The carriage doesn't move!" she said. "Or I should say it only turns over, so you can spool the paper around it. The ribbon moves back and forth instead of the carriage. And instead of keys, the machine has this metal ball with all the letters and punctuation marks raised on its surface. When you work the keyboard, the ball jumps up and hits the paper with whatever letter you type, and jumps back, as fast as your fingers can move. It's just amazing!" Who would have believed such a story in 1964? Not I. It's a good thing she didn't live to describe software. A few months afterward I happened to see IBM's original Selectric typewriter in action for the first time. I recognized it instantly from my mother's description. Of course, after that, I could never trust her all over again ==================================================================== >-->From Jerry's Christian Jottings , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' >What denomination are you? 'If {anyone suffers} as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name.' I Peter 4:16 We are simply Christians, no more, no less. That’s what Jesus wants us to be. Wouldn’t you agree? Have you noticed that churches seem to have a hard time deciding to be content to be just churches? Christians need to be content to be Christians and churches need to be content to be churches. What does the Bible actually teach us? Most are unaware that the modern series of divisions that we call denominationalism is actually addressed (in principle) by the Bible. 'Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.' I Corinthians 1:10 Look up the word 'denomination' in any good dictionary or encyclopedia! The Wikipedia encyclopedia entry begins with… 'Christianity is composed Of four major divisions of Churches: Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox and Protestant. Denomination typically refers to one of the many Christian churches.' Now compare'“denomination' to the word “division” of the bible verse above I Cor.1:10. It comes from the word schisma in the greek. Do you recognize it? We get our word schism from it. It means a tear or a division. It shows up two more times in the Corinthian letter. I Corinthians 11:18 'For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part, I believe it.' I Corinthians 12:25 'that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.' Not once, but three times, Paul admonishes that fracturing church to allow no schisms or denominations to develop. But that was 'just Paul’s opinion' right? Actually no! Many are familiar with Jesus’ brokenhearted prayer of Gethsemane. Not my will, but Thy will be done! Almost none are familiar with the prayer that preceded it. Are you aware that Jesus prayed first for the apostles, then for us, BEFORE He prayed for Himself! Do you know what He prayed? 'I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, (are} in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.” John 17:20-21 We should owe our allegiance to no manmade creed, no manmade denomination. Our loyalty must be to no one other than the Lord Jesus Christ. [AND GOD ALMIGHTY] 'Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, 'I am of Paul,' and 'I of Apollos,' and 'I of Cephas,' and 'I of Christ. Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?' I Corinthians 1:12-13 Many through history have recognized this very principle. None other than Martin Luther said, 'I pray you leave my name alone, and call not yourselves Lutherans, but Christians. Who is Luther? My doctrine is not mine. I have not been crucified for anyone. St. Paul would not let any call themselves after Paul, nor of Peter, but only of Christ. How then, does it befit me, a miserable bag of dust and ashes, to give my name to the children of God? Cease, my dear friends, to cling to these party names and distinctions; away with all; and let us call ourselves Christians after Him from whom our doctrine comes." (The Life of Luther, by Stork p.289) Isn’t it interesting that in the 1500’s Martin Luther actually quoted the same passage, and used it in the same way as we have been? Then he begged his followers to call themselves Christians rather than Lutherans. They waited till he died, then did as they pleased… calling themselve Lutherans against Luther’s will! We are neither Catholic nor protestant nor Jew. We aren’t protestant or protesting anything… We simply choose to be Christians. 'God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, So that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.' Philippians 2:10-11 Do you believe that the name of Jesus is to be exhalted above every other name? God does! Will you bow before the name of Jesus? 'And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.' WHO IS JESUS CHRIST? The Bible is the Word of God. It tells us about the life and death — and resurrected life — of the greatest man who ever lived. His name is Jesus Christ. For centuries men have debated the identity of this unique man. How did he do the things he did? I assert that the answers lie in the Bible. You can't be choosy about who you help. Some of us think we should only help those who believe like we do. No. '...uphold the weak, be patient with all' (1 Thessalonians 5:14 NKJV). There's a story about a guy who fell into a pit and couldn't get out. A subjective person came along and said, 'I feel for you down there.' An objective person came along and said, 'Well, it's logical somebody would fall down there.' A Pharisee said, 'Only bad people fall into pits.' A judgmental Christian said, 'You deserve your pit.' A realist said, 'Now that's a pit.' A geologist told him to appreciate the rock strata in the pit. A tax agent asked him if he was paying taxes on the pit. In what ways is your work transforming you? Since the ministry is not without its difficulties, some who serve God in the local church let the long hours, low pay, unseen results, and undeserved criticism make them bitter and disillusioned. The book of Hebrews says that Christ was made perfect through his sufferings. This is not referring to Christ's sinless perfection; he had already achieved that. "Perfect" here refers to his fully realizing his potential -- fully accomplishing the mission that God had given him. How was this accomplished? Through suffering. His suffering brought many to salvation. And it was only right that God -- who made everything and for whom everything was made -- should bring his many children into glory. Through the suffering of Jesus, God made him a perfect leader, one fit to bring them into their salvation. (Hebrews 2:10 NLT) Your work may involve difficulty and hardship. Like Christ, your suffering can make you a perfect leader -- it can enable you to fully realize your potential and fully accomplish God's plan for your life. Remember that the reward for your work is not a pat on the back or an increase in pay. The reward for your work is the transforma- tion of your soul into the likeness of Christ, and the opportunity to hear the ultimate words of approval: "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." — Steve May as seen in Monday Memo To SUBSCRIBE: Send an e-mail with SUBSCRIBE CUP O'CHEER in the subject line to cheer316@sc.rr.com. =================================================================== >-->From Our Friend Johanna :) The movie "Corpus Christi" is due to be released this June to August. If you do send this around, we just might be able to prevent this film from showing in America . Let's stand for what we believe in and stop the mockery of Jesus Christ our Savior. He had health problems immediately, and had to be Life-Flighted from the Army hospital at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, to Children's Hospital at the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City. This was an hour and a half trip by car. But my wife and I didn't have a car. Our previous car had blown up, so I rode with a guy in my unit to work every day. I had been talking with another member of my unit, to buy a car he hadn't driven for two years. But he wanted all the money up front, as he'd been burned by other people before, and lost money. That evening I called him up, and explained our situation. He immediately agreed to take payments I could afford -- $150 a month. He was still paying $250 a month for the car, with nine payments left. He said to make the balance up with my tax refund. I asked him if he would make money on it, and he said no, and it didn't matter. The next morning I packed up a week's clothes for my wife, our two children, and myself. I picked my wife up at the hospital, and headed up the highway for Oklahoma City. About 20 minutes outside of Oklahoma City, we had a flat tire. I was stuck on the side of the highway, no spare, no jack, in almost 90-degree weather, with my wife and two children. About 30 cars passed, no one stopped, even with the hood raised to signal car trouble. Finally, a dump truck (of all things) pulled over. He took me a mile up the road to Newcastle. It was another mile to the tire shop. Once there, I explained my predicament of neither jack nor spare, and they handed me a jack to borrow. Newcastle is a small town, with no taxi service, so I asked where the police station was. I walked a few blocks to the police station, and explained the situation to the officer there, who was very rude. He said they weren't a taxi service. I resigned myself to walking the two miles back to the car, and started on my way. I got about a half mile down the road when a police cruiser with two officers stopped me. It was the officer who was so rude to me and his police chief, who had learned about the situation through the dispatcher. They drove me to the car and waited while I took the flat off. Then they took me to the tire shop for the repair, and finally back to the car to install the repaired tire. I then returned the jack to the tire shop. My son spent three weeks in the hospital, and is now a healthy 5-year-old. I wish I could go back and thank all those who helped us to be by his side when he was so ill. =======HeroicStories======= .-. _,,,,,_ .-. It did keep soldiers from bleeding to death, but pulling it off caused more damage and pain than the original bullet wound so it was quickly abandoned for more conventional bandaging. The military started looking for other uses for this amazing product and the rest is history. Duct tape comes in a variety of colors (the newest is clear), but my favorite is the original silver/gray. It is with great pride and honor that we offer this list of "Unconventional Uses for Duct Tape. I heard one talk show host ask the question, "Where did we go wrong?" The answer is that we have turned our backs on the Bible. For example, we no longer allow the Ten Commandments to be posted in schoolrooms. The Supreme Court declared this public display of the Ten Commandments unconstitutional on November 17, 1980. The court was deeply concerned that if these plainly religious values were posted in schoolrooms students might be encouraged to follow them. Since then, three generations of high school students and two generations of college students have graduated. By implication these students were taught that God's absolute moral standards summarized in the Ten Commandments are taboo. And Ted Koppel actually angered people when he said Moses did not come down from the mountain with the Ten Suggestions! Now these three generations of students have entered the mainstream of society. The 1992 Los Angeles riots, although shorter than the previous riots, were the occasion for more looting, violence, and murder. There is a correlation. When we turn our backs on the Bible and the standards of God in the Bible, we can expect more violence, more murders, more rapes, and more thefts in our society. The problem is that we no longer believe in absolute truth coming to us from God. We no longer believe in God who has spoken to us in a book. So we are a society that is adrift. We desperately need to get back to the traditional understanding of the Bible as the Word of God. Contributed by Dr. Dennis J. I raised a couple of windows, left the back door open and headed outside. I gave my four-year-old, Wayne, a tiny rake and shovel to play with while I started on the scattered remnants of old winter vegetation. It was nice feeling the warm sun on my bare arms. I had several free hours to work in the backyard. You know how one thing leads to another? The cleared flowerbeds and grass looked so good that I started tidying the uneven edges of the walkway. Much better! But since the walkway was made of brick, there were lots of places where the new grass poked up between them. I pulled a few clumps by hand. It was harder than it looked. There wasn't enough room to get anything larger than a screwdriver between the bricks to pry out the grass. I managed to do only a couple of feet of walkway. Lightbulb moment! I got the hose, and by adjusting it to the pinpoint setting, loosened the grass clumps enough that they came out much easier. This worked great until I sprayed a spot and the cold water and mud bounced back into my face! Wayne thought that was hilarious! I continued on with the hose and screwdriver. Every once in a while, I'd get a little more bounce-back. That was ok. I was making really good progress. Nobody but my little boy could see me here in the backyard. I'd grab a quick shower afterwards and toss my muddy clothes in the washer. Wayne continued to play here and there while I worked on the walkway. Our dog, who had delivered puppies a couple of weeks before, was right beside him. After a while, Wayne went inside to use the bathroom. He wandered out later, picked up his shovel and started digging in a flowerbed. I finished the walkway, put away the tools and stepped back to gaze with satisfaction at the greatly improved view before me. I called Wayne to gather his toys so we could get cleaned up before Daddy arrived home from work. It was noticeably cooler since I stopped working. My wet clothes felt uncomfortable, especially my soggy pants, which had stretched way longer than my legs. I reached for the doorknob. It wouldn't open! I belatedly recalled my lectures to Wayne on door rules -- keep it shut, locked, etc. The little guy remembered this time, as evidenced by the tightly locked door. There was no way I'd go next door for help. I was too filthy, and Wayne didn't look much better. The open windows were too high for us to reach. "Mama, I'm cold!" Wayne looked up at me with questioning eyes. "OK. Let's go in the garage," I said. I hoped we would find an old sweater or something for him in there. The garage, about thirty feet back from the house, was divided into three rooms. One of them held the washer and dryer. At the back of the room was a large cardboard box housing the mama dog and her pups. We looked everywhere, but the only thing I could find was an old piece of pink plastic curtain. I said, "Wayne, how would you like to take a nap with the puppies?" He was delighted at the suggestion. He crawled in with the pups and I called the mama dog to get in with them. In a few minutes, the box of squirming life settled down and they were all asleep. I wrapped the plastic curtain around me like a big shawl and sat down on the floor to wait. The curtain looked ridiculous, but it was surprisingly warm. My husband, Ron, would be home in less than an hour. No problem. Soon, I heard his car in the driveway. I started outside to meet him when I caught sight of another car right behind his, so I ducked back into the garage. I'd just keep quiet until the person left. Then I heard voices coming closer. Oh, No! They were headed for the garage! What was I going to do now? The dog box was too small or, I swear, I'd burrow under the pups and cover up with the stupid curtain! I could see the confusion in Ron's eyes as he caught sight of me standing there in all my glory. At least I'd had the forethought to discard the curtain -- for all the good it did me. My well-dressed husband turned to the equally well-dressed man behind him and said, "I'd like to introduce you to my wife." I was uncharacteristically speechless for a moment, thinking things COULDN'T get any worse, when Wayne's head popped up out of the cluster of pups and he gaily shouted, "Hi Daddy! Me and Mama got locked out!" -- Barbara Hergenroder ___________________________________________ Barbara lives in central Florida. About five months after the pink curtain and pups incident, they were blessed with another son, John. Both boys are adults now. Barbara currently has a door that requires a key to lock it from the outside, so she won't be locked outside keyless again. ===================================================================== >-->From InspiredBuffalo: [Please Keep Our InspiredBuffalo Lady - Nancy - In Your Prayers Daily for Complete Recovery in the Name Of Jesus Christ.] \ God made us sisters, Hearts made us friends. .--. /`\| / .;;.;;;;. He was whistling a real sweet tune for he was saved and had the joy of the Lord, but he was a baby Christian. As Soul was walking, a beautiful and seductive woman came out from behind a tree. Soul was very startled. He said, "Hello, I'm Soul, what is your name?" She replied, "I am Temptation, I have what you want." "What do I want?" replied Soul. "You want to do all things which are of the flesh," said Temptation. Soul replied, "O.K., lead me." So he and Temptation went off and fulfilled the desires of the flesh. When Soul returned to the garden, he met a man named Condemnation. Condemnation said, "Hey, I see you have met my friend, Temptation." Soul said, "Yes, who are you?" "I am Condemnation, I come after Temptation. We work hand-in-hand." Then Condemnation jumped on Soul's back and began to beat him. He hit him in the face and kicked him when he was down. This went on for several days. On about the third day, a man named Mercy came running and said, "I command you, Condemnation, to stop beating Soul." Condemnation snickered, "Make me." So Mercy unsheathed his sword and cut Condemnation in two. As Soul watched in astonished pain, he was overtaken by the power of Mercy. Mercy walked up to Soul and said, "I have dealt with Condemnation before. He should not show up around you anymore." Soul replied, "How can I ever thank you?" "Well," replied Mercy, "I was sent here by God and He told me to introduce you to a dear friend of mine. His name is Redemption." Redemption walked up and said, "Hello Soul, I see that you are not doing well." Soul replied, "Not until Mercy came along. It is a pleasure to meet you Redemption." "Well", said Redemption," I am glad to meet you. Are you ready to accept me?" "What do you mean?" asked Soul. Redemption said, "Well, when you accepted Jesus and decided to walk with Him, then you chose to accept the things of Him and His love. I am a part of Jesus' love. I help you feel forgiven. You will never have to deal with Condemnation again. Temptation may come around, but I have someone I would like for you to meet who can help you with that. His name is Grace." Grace walked up to Soul and said, "Hello Soul, I have been waiting for you. As a matter of fact all three of us have been waiting to meet you. I will help you take the way out of Temptation that God gives you as it comes up. The last person we want you to meet is Faith." "Hi Soul, I am Faith, and I will help you stay strong and keep your beliefs strong," said Faith. Soul began to cry. When he began to cry Redemption said, "This is what we were here for. Jesus redeemed you, saved you by Grace and through Faith he gives you Mercy. Jesus loves you Soul." Soul said, "I love you, sweet Jesus." -<>- | . | "-._ || : '. `~~`~88`~~^`~~`~^88~^`~~`~~`~^~`. `> ' . 88' ". _ '-"88` . ` ' . | .' ,'~^~8^~^`^~~^`^~8`~~~^~~~^~`; ' .-' 8 8 \ ` : ` 8 8 | : | 8 8 || ' 8 8 | | : 8 8 `| . I even had to go to work as a cashier at my local IGA store. I had to endure inconsiderate customer comments like, "What are you doing working today? You should have the day off since you're a Mom". But my husband had given me a very simple gift that touched my heart so much that nothing was going to ruin my day. Here is that letter: Dear Kim, I have been hearing all week about the lady who suggested the idea of Mother's Day, and how she was so opposed to people buying cards instead of sending a personal letter to their mothers that she spent the last few years of her life trying to have Mother's Day removed. I know you are not my mother, but you are the mother of our children so I want to personally thank you for all you do. I know that the duties of a mother are so easily overlooked and taken for granted. But I am so glad you have so willingly sacrificed for our children. You chose to be a stay-at-home mom instead of pursuing a career. You chose to do without things so the kids would have things. You chose to open our home to care for other children. You chose to give our children something that so many kids today don't have -- a stable and loving environment. You chose to put up with my failures and shortcomings so we could remain a family when so many others would have called it quits. You chose the rewards of life that money can never buy. We may not have a life of luxury, but we do have a love for each other that continues to grow. I can't promise you a better tomorrow but I can promise I'll be there tomorrow to continue to give you love and support. I didn't buy a gift or a card because I truly believe what you told me -- that all you wanted is for Graybie (our cat) to have her surgery. I know that means more to you than anything right now. There it is again -- that wonderful love of a mother that you have -- not only for our children, but for our pets as well. I am so proud that you are my wife. I appreciate the love and compassion that you have for others. Hopefully, that will continue to rub off on me. You truly are a gift from God to me. I love you more than words can say.
