Pershing Junior High School. "Please hold this extra pair of shoes for me and I'll pick them up right after the final school bell rings at 3:15." I had a dilemma. I was new at school and Bobby was one of my first friends that I had met. However, I had a dental appointment after school and my mother said that she would pick me up in front of the school building right after school was out. What was I going to do? But my mother was always late. So I told Bobby that I would wait for him at my locker with his shoes for a few minutes after the final bell. We agreed that if he did not show up at my locker after 10 minutes I would just leave his shoes in a brown bag on the floor in front of my locker for him to pick up. My friend thanked me and said that that would be perfect. When the final bell rang at 3:15 that afternoon I ran to my locker. I turned the corner of the hallway where my locker was, expecting to see Bobby waiting for me. But Bobby was nowhere in sight. At 3:35 the only person remaining in the hall was the school janitor sweeping the floors. So, I put Bobby's shoes in a brown paper bag and put the sack down next to my locker. I then bolted to meet my mother who told me she had been waiting for me since 3:13. I smiled but I thought, "When was my mother ever on time?" I was still somewhat bewildered the next morning at school due to the dental anesthesia the previous day when I had seen Bobby. "Where's my shoes?" he asked. "Shoes -- shoes -- what shoes?" I thought. Then it hit me and I realized what shoes Bobby was referring to. I explained to him that since he had not been at my locker for twenty minutes after the final bell had rung I had left the shoes in a brown paper bag on the floor next to my locker. I reminded Bobby that that was our plan. Bobby screamed, "THOSE SHOES WERE NOT MY SHOES! THEY WERE TONY'S SHOES!" I swallowed and meekly said, "You mean "Big Tony?" Bobby did not have to say one word. The look on his face told me I was in big trouble. I was your typical 13 year old -- 5'2" tall, voice cracking, poor complexion. But Tony, well, basically, he was a big man. He was over 6' tall, bearded with an afro that had a metal rake in it. Compared to "Big Tony" I was a midget and Bobby told me I was in big trouble. I ran all the way home, surprising my parents who were not expecting me so early in the morning. "What's the matter? Are you feeling okay?" my mother asked. I explained the problem with Big Tony's shoes and begged my parents for help. My father was quick to respond. "We'll just buy Tony some other shoes. Mike, find out what size he wears." However, before my father could finish his sentence my mother erupted, "We're not buying any shoes for Tony. This is ridiculous. Mike told the boy if he wasn't at his locker he would just leave the shoes and that's exactly what he did. I don't want to hear anyone saying anything more about buying shoes!" I was shocked! My mother had always been so passive with everything, but now when her son was probably going to be murdered she was standing up and being assertive. I did not know what to do. My mother quickly replied, "Mike Segal, you go back to school this instant and I don't want to hear one more word about any kind of shoes!" As I slowly and meekly exited from my house I heard my mother's remark as I closed the door. "Ridiculous!" I was petrified at school when I returned. I pondered which would be worse -- getting punched by "Big Tony" or facing the wrath of my mother? I could not concentrate on anything at school that day except the sounding of the final bell. At half past two, the door to my classroom creaked open. I was even more petrified as I looked to see who was on the other side of the door. Was it Big Tony? However, I was relieved when I saw Mrs. Brown, the frail 68 year old school secretary, who whispered something to Mrs. Johnson, my fifth period math teacher. Mrs. Johnson quickly told the class, "Boys and girls, it seems Mr. Watson (our school assistant principal) wants to talk to Mike." "Could this day be any worse?" I thought to myself as I walked with Mrs. Brown to Mr. Watson's office. As I sat in the chair outside his office I could feel my knees shaking as I thought, "Now, which is worse, being punched by "Big Tony", facing the wrath of my mother, or being questioned by the 6'10" assistant principal?" Mr. Watson exited from his office and motioned me to join him there. I rose from my chair, entered his office, and sat down, but my knees refused to stop knocking. I could only think of two things: 1) Why was I there? and 2) Mr. Watson looked like a giant! However, I was so surprised by his meek voice when he began speaking. "Mike, I understand you're having some problems with a Tony Peterson. Ordinarily I don't condone students fighting, however I'll make an exception in this case. Mike, you can fight Tony." As he said those words, my mouth dropped open. Was he kidding? Could this day be any worse? I left Mr. Watson's office feeling petrified. I could not concentrate on anything, except avoiding Tony. However, as the days went by, Tony did not say anything to me. In the ensuing weeks I realized what must have happened... My parents must have called Mr. Watson and "calmly threatened" that there would be dire consequences if I was hurt. In turn, Mr. Watson must have "gently persuaded" Tony to leave me alone. True, if my father would have had his way, I would have been able to sleep much easier that eventful evening when Tony lost his shoes. However, because my mother got her way, I learned many lessons, including money cannot buy everything. For that, and for so much more, I say, "Thank you, mom." -- Michael Segal __________________________________________________ Michael Jordan Segal, who defied all odds after being shot in the head, is a husband, father, social worker, freelance author. And more than that, can you imagine giving birth while in a coma? One woman’s story proves that, with God, all things are indeed possible. Angela Primachenko, a 27-year-old respiratory therapist, was 33 weeks pregnant when her spring allergies seemed to flare up. She wasn’t concerned at first—until she started running a fever two days later. When she visited the hospital, she was diagnosed with COVID-19. “I was taking precautions,” Primachenko said. “I didn’t go to work because I am pregnant. I don’t know where I caught it, I don’t know where it happened, but somehow I just ended up coming to the hospital and just getting sicker and sicker.” A week after her diagnosis, she was struggling to breathe and was placed on a ventilator, with her life in the balance and the future uncertain. As a respiratory therapist, Primachenko knew the danger of her situation. She was frightened for her own life and for the life of her unborn baby as well. As her condition worsened, Primachenko’s doctors realized that the best course of action involved putting her into a medically induced coma. The coma would allow her body to focus on fighting off the coronavirus infection. Primachenko’s family was frightened, wondering if mother or baby would come out of the infection alive. But they clung to their faith in God, praying for Primachenko’s recovery and the safe delivery of her baby. “I don’t know how to make it through without faith,” said Oksana Luiten, Primachenko’s twin sister. “Faith for healing, faith for life after death, faith for it all.” A few days after Primachenko entered the coma, the team of doctors decided to induce labor in order to deliver her baby. It was a solution that many didn’t even think was possible! But the doctors believed it was the best chance for both mother and baby to survive. And despite all odds, Primachenko - still in her medically induced coma—delivered a healthy baby girl named Ava, who was then rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The new mother remained unconscious for nearly a week after the delivery. When she woke up, she was disoriented and confused. “I just woke up and all of a sudden I didn’t have my belly anymore. It was just extremely mind-blowing,” she admitted. Though she had done the impossible and delivered her baby while in a coma, Primachenko couldn’t see her daughter in the NICU. She still needed to recover from her fight with COVID-19. And by the grace of God, she did recover! It was a triumphant day when Primachenko was able to come off the ventilator and leave the ICU. Her respiratory therapy colleagues gathered in the hallway to cheer and celebrate her recovery. “Everyone did a standing ovation and just clapped me out of the ICU, which was so amazing and such a huge thing to be able to leave the ICU and go to the floors,” Primachenko remembered. Primachenko was quick to give all credit for her recovery and Ava’s safe delivery to God! She knew that she would have never been able to survive the infection, the coma, and the labor without His mercy. “It was just the grace of God,” she affirmed. Although Primachenko, her husband, and the rest of their family know that Ava and her mother both have a long road to full health, they continue to draw strength from their faith in God’s goodness. “It was a dark time,” Luiten admitted, reflecting on her own perspective after watching her sister battle the virus and come out alive. “I doubted and questioned my faith and God, I felt so powerless and so fearful and out of control.” “But that’s how faith grows, going through times of uncertainty and seeing God gently calm my spirit again and again and now seeing the end. I stand in awe of God. He is good.” Primachenko reminded her family, “Even in the hardest days and the hardest times, there’s hope.” “And you can rely on God and people and community. The amount of community people that were praying for me is just unbelievable. I was blown away and I’m so incredibly thankful.” “And I feel like I’m a miracle walking,” she concluded emotionally. Praise God for His faithfulness and goodness, even in these strange and trying times! Primachenko’s story is proof of His ability to make the impossible possible. She turned and said, "Mom, will you sing to me? Will you hold me and sing like you used to when I was a little girl?" Her husband and her two little stepdaughters stopped and looked back. I always sang to my kids when they were young. Jill and her older brother shared a bedroom, and I knelt between them, holding one's hand and stroking the blond head of the other. I sang and crooned through "Dona, Dona" and "Kumbaya." I swayed in rhythm to "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." I never missed a verse of "Hush, Little Baby." I made up songs too, a habit that drove my husband crazy. On nights when I was out, the kids begged, "Sing 'The Horse Broke the Fence, 'Daddy," or "No, we want 'The Big Wheel' song." And they didn't mean "Proud Mary," which he might have managed, although he really couldn't carry a tune even when he knew the words. But the kids and I always finished with "All Things Bright and Beautiful," as I watched their active bodies quiet and their eyes grow dreamy as they imagined the purple-headed mountains and ripe fruit in the garden of the old hymn. By the time I warbled my way through the refrain for the last time, one of them had usually twitched and fallen asleep. As Jill grew from child to adult, it became apparent that she had inherited her father's trouble carrying a melody. She cuddles with her girls every night and she reads to them, but she just can't sing to them. Recently, I babysat for our granddaughters. After I tucked them into our king-size bed, I sang "Dona, Dona," "Kumbaya," and all the others. Hannah, the six-year-old, lay still as a stone, gazing at the ceiling. Four-year-old Brianna came forward onto her hands and knees, staring into my eyes from so close that her features blurred. In the dim light coming through the open door, I saw her lips parted, glistening. Trance-like, she held perfectly still, listening as if she wanted to inhale the songs directly from my mouth. It was a few days later that Jill asked me to once again sing to her. She said, "The girls talked about your singing, Mom, and it brought back all the wonderful memories. I remember my cool pillow and your hand on my hair. I remember my nightgown with the sunbonnet dolls on it and the pink ice cream cone quilt you made. Sometimes I would wake up when you kissed me one last time." That's when she turned and asked, "Mom, will you sing to me again?" Her husband stood beneath the street lamp with a child balanced on each hip. Her father and brothers stood behind me, illuminated by the porch light. She's very tall, this girl of mine. Standing on the step below me, she still had to stoop to put her head against my chest. I wrapped my fingers in her long hair, and she wound her arms around my waist. "What shall I sing, Jill?" I asked. "You know, Mom," she said, looking up and smiling. "'All Things Bright and Beautiful'?" "Of course." She snuggled closer. "All the verses." I kissed the top of her head and began to sing. Swallowing a lump in my throat and stroking her back, I continued through the verses. Off-key, she joined in. She began to cry, and so did I, but the words still flowed from my mouth as my mind drifted back over the years. I remembered her birth, how ecstatic I was to have a daughter-what an easy child she was. I remembered how she loved to please others-and still does. This girl who married young and took on the daunting task of raising another woman's children is no longer under my wing. She's a young woman now, and I can't tuck the ice cream cone quilt around her shoulders each night. I can't protect her from pain, from hurt and from mature responsibility. I can't make growing up any easier for her. Jill's tears soaked through my T-shirt that night and mine dropped onto her bowed head. She clung tightly and then looked up into my face. "The purple-headed mountains. Don't forget the purple-headed mountains," she whispered, staring at me through the dim light, just as Brianna had a few nights earlier, drinking in the words, the memories, the song. Drinking in my love. My voice cracked, and I could sing no more. We stood locked together on the stairs. I know the enormity of the task she's taken on is sometimes almost more than she can handle. I know how hard she's working to create a home. Cradling her in maternal love, allowing her to remember falling asleep to a mother's singing, was the best I could offer my daughter this night. Jill squeezed me tightly and then turned toward her husband and her stepdaughters. Her dad hugged me as we watched her settle the girls into the back seat of their car-and then I heard the hymn again. I strained my ears, listening. Jill was still humming the refrain. Then Brianna's thin, little child's voice burbled from the open car window as they pulled away from the curb: "All things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all." In one way, however, Joseph was sad that school was ending. He had recently asked Jesus to come into his heart, and he was excited about sharing his newfound faith with his friends. Joseph decided that he would take his Bible to school on the final day of classes. He entered the school bus, sat in his assigned seat and began reading the Bible. "What are you reading?," asked Joshua, who was sitting next to him. "I am reading about the life of Jesus in the Bible," Joseph said. "You're a pretty good reader, aren't you?," Joshua asked. "How about reading to all of us?" "Certainly," replied Joseph, who turned to the first chapter of Genesis and began reading about God creating the earth. By the time Joseph finished reading the story of Creation, the bus pulled into the school parking lot. "Thanks for reading God's Word to us," Joshua said. "When school starts again next year, how about reading to us every day? We can learn more about God, and the time we spend riding to school will pass much quicker." At the end of the day, Joseph read the story of Noah building the ark. "I'm already looking forward to the beginning of school next year," said Joshua. Joseph and his dad, John, invited Joshua to go on several of their summer fishing trips. While they waited for the fish to bite, Joseph read Bible stories to his father and Joshua. As the long, hot, humid days of summer came to a close, school got underway once again. On the first day of school, Joseph took his Bible with him. During the year, he read stories of Creation, the Flood, Daniel and the Lions' Den, David and Goliath, Jesus' virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, healings, Crucifixion, death on the cross, burial, the Resurrection, and Ascension into heaven. As the school year came to a close, Joseph and Joshua began talking about God's will for their lives. "I believe that God wants us to become evangelists and share His love with the entire world," said Joseph. "I have been thinking the same thing," Joshua said. "Today is the final day of school, and we haven't discussed any plans for this summer," said Joseph. "Do you want to spend the summer fishing again?" "I've been thinking about what we should do this summer," said Joshua. "And if we are serious about becoming evangelists, I believe we should spend the summer telling people about God's love." "That sounds great to me!," exclaimed Joseph. "But we'll still be fishing; we'll just be fishing for people to come to Jesus!" "And we won't have to drown a single worm to do it!," laughed Joshua. "Or married worms either!," Joseph chuckled. '-._ _.-' `'-'` >Hand Me the Keys Story Editor: by Ellie Braun-Haley Joyce Schowalter Alberta, Canada My friend Carin was driving home from a few days in the mountains on assignment. It was 1982, and she was excited to see her family again. She came up behind an erratic driver, and wondered if he was falling asleep, suffering a heart attack, or drunk at the wheel. Then she saw him toss a beer bottle. She drove around him to safety, and put distance between the two cars. Then her conscience nagged, "I can't just drive away, I need to get him off the road; someone might be killed!" She slowed to move back behind the drunk, never pausing to think about repercussions. As the drunk approached again and passed, her plan took root. She would pull up beside him, honk and motion for him to pull over. When she did that, however, he just looked confused and decelerated. After two repeats, he was driving at city street speeds, but she was no closer to stopping him. One more time... he slowed, and pulled over onto the shoulder. Then she watched in horror as he lost control of his car. The ditch was roomy with gentle slopes. A good driver could drive in and out easily. He skidded in -- and stopped. Was he hurt? Carin dashed down to his vehicle. He sat slumped. She rapped on the window, "Are you all right?" He nodded yes and rolled down the window. "Give me your keys. I can't allow you to drive," she demanded. He stared, reached for his keys and handed them over. "You could cause an accident," she said, "a death that would haunt you throughout your life." "I've been up all night. I worked late, there was a farewell party... I needed to get home...." he replied, then wilted again. Carin took him to her car, drove his out of the ditch, suddenly realizing she had no further plans. What to do? Back up on the highway, inspiration struck. As if on schedule a car appeared on the horizon. With the stranger leaning against her car to steady himself, she entered the road. She waved her arms, and the car slowed to reveal four male passengers. "One of you must drive this man's car to his home, as he's too drunk to drive." The passenger in the front nodded "yes". Everyone else agreed. Carin returned to the drunk, told him of the arrangements, and assured him both he and his car would arrive home safely. He took her hand, smiled and said, " Thank you for caring. No one has ever done something like this for me. I just...thank you." To this day, more than twenty years later, Carin doesn't remember what she said in response. None of us know what that driver thinks of this incident today. Yet I wouldn't be surprised to learn that, in addition to perhaps saving his life that night, her one act of kindness made a lasting change in his life. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From LaughAndLift: "God caused the Bible to be written for the express purpose of revealing to man God's plan for redemption. God caused this Book to be written that He might make His everlasting laws clear to His children, and that they might have His great wisdom to guide them and His great love to comfort them as they make their way through life. For without the Bible, this world would indeed be a dark and frightening place, without signpost or beacon." - Billy Graham , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' >The Truth About Believers (By Dr. Charles Stanley) When I became a new believer, someone patted me on the shoulder and said, "Do the best you can," which is unbiblical and unhelpful advice. A while later, I was discipled by some faithful saints, who taught me the truth about believers. *A believer is identified as a child of God.* Through prayer, we have access to our Father at any time, and we can expect that He will be faithful to every one of His promises. What's more, we are no longer classified as "sinners," a term describing those who have not received Jesus Christ as Savior. We've been transformed into saints - holy persons saved by grace and set apart for God's purposes. Sin and temptation will continue to be realities for us as long as we're on earth. But since our transgressions are forgiven, our new identity cannot change. *A believer is positioned in Christ.* God's Spirit dwells in us so we can live righteously, as Christ did. To describe this relationship, He used a grapevine metaphor. The Lord is the vine, and we are the branches connected to Him and drawing on His power (John 15:1-5). *A believer's mission is to show Christ to the world.* Our vine is to bear the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). When our character and conduct reflect these aspects of Jesus' nature, we help others to see the beauty of a relationship with the Lord. The truth about believers is that we don't have to "do the best we can." God works through His children to accomplish His purposes. --- , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' ...True, but it still takes our will to do God's Will. The truth about believers is that all we have to do is Love God... This was true for those during Jesus' Time... Mark 12: [30] And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And now for us as believers... Jude 1: [21] Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. "Keep yourselves" means you have to work at it. Renewed mind. It isn't automatic by God working through you. Unless you let God do so, it isn't going to happen. God isn't going to make you do any thing. The devil is the one that does that. I had unstained clothing. I had quiet conversations on the phone. Before I was a Mom I slept as late as I wanted. And never worried about how late I got into bed. I brushed my hair and my teeth everyday. Before I was a Mom I cleaned my house each day. I never tripped over toys or forgot words to lullabies. Before I was a Mom I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous. I never thought about immunizations. Before I was a Mom I had never been puked on, pooped on, spit on, peed on, or pinched by tiny fingers. Before I was a Mom I had complete control of my mind, my thoughts, my body and all my feelings. I slept all night. Before I was a Mom I never held down a screaming child so that doctors could do tests or give shots. I never looked into teary eyes and cried. I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin. I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep. Before I was a Mom I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't want to put it down. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop the hurt. I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much. I never knew that I could love someone so much. I never knew I would love being a Mom. Before I was a Mom I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside my body. I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby. I didn't know that bond between a Mother and her child. I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so important. Before I was a Mom I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was OK.
