As a kid, I tended to agree with her. They were a far cry from roses. As the years past like sand through the hour glass, I didn't give geraniums more than a passing thought. While I was in France with my Army husband, I planted flowers by our front door step. No geraniums or marigolds -- only sweet scented flowers. While pulling weeds from my small garden one day in June, my husband arrived home just before noon to tell me my grandmother was ill and in the hospital. Of course, my first thought was getting home to see her, but I was way "too pregnant" for the airlines to allow my emergency flight to the states. When we got word that my grandmother had passed away, I went into false labor. Later that week, I delivered my precious daughter. When Lorena was a year old, we were finally shipped back to American soil. It was a bitter sweet home coming because my beloved grandmother wouldn't be there to welcome us back. My two younger children would never know her or be held and hugged by her. While showing off my three children to my favorite uncle, he asked me if I'd like a "trinket" from Grammie's jewelry box. I was thrilled to be able to visit Grammie's house once again. I'd spent many happy childhood hours there -- playing the piano, playing Monopoly with Uncle Reggie, or exploring the magical upstairs of Grammie's sea captain type house and marveling over the beautiful hand pieced quilts and crocheted bedspreads, the oak dresser with oval mirror, and bath tub with feet. I loved looking from the alcove window in Grammie's downstairs bedroom to watch fishermen as they came to sell their lobsters at my uncle's wharf. I loved sitting at the window seat in the dining room and looking out at the ever changing ocean as sea gulls glided overhead making their gull noises for Grammie to toss them a tidbit. To me, her house was truly an elegant place to be. The first time I slept over in the guest bedroom, I felt like a princess right out of a fairy tale. Her house was always filled with intriguing smells -- cookies, pies and cakes, Evening in Paris cologne in deep blue bottles, Spic and Span, and her ever present house plants. I coveted the Easter lilies, geraniums, and a huge, gorgeous Christmas cactus. Grammie had had the cactus for eons, and she'd given me many slips from it to start. Every time one succumbed, she'd give me another and warn me again not to over water it. When, at last, the door to Grammie's house was swung opened, though my mind knew better, my heart expected her welcoming arms to reach out to us and pull us into her inviting kitchen. "Sit a spell and have a piece of pie," I could hear her say. What I didn't expect, after her home had been closed up for over a year, was to be greeted by the spicy scent of geraniums. It seemed as if the house had been holding its breath all that time, and when the door was opened, it exhaled. The powerful scent of geranium washed over my very soul like a crashing wave from the Atlantic at the height of a storm. The night before Grammie's passing, a strong wind shook the cement walled house we lived in and caused me a restless night. The morning was peaceful, sunny and bright. When I noticed our Spanish neighbor across the street, I commented about the howling wind of the night before. He looked at me rather strangely and told me he'd been up several times during the night and added in broken English, "No Honey, calm... No wind last night." When the news of Grammie's passing came, I wasn't surprised. I felt the wind had been forewarning me of the sad news to come. Had the geranium scent really lingered in Grammie's house all that time? Or had it been tucked into the recesses of my memory waiting for the right moment to emerge? Whether the geranium scent was real or imagined, it spoke volumes to me. Grammie's physical presence may be missing from my life, but the essence of her love, like perfume from a beautiful rose, would remain in my heart forever. -- Kay Seefeldt ___________________________________________ Kay lives in Maine and is a 26 year veteran middle school teacher. This tribute to her grandmother was inspired from coming across a marvelous painting of a geranium while surfing the web. Kay, who usually prefers landscapes or abstract, painted a single pink rose and titled it "Grammie Rose" in honor of her wonderfully, encouraging and loving grandmother Rose Woodward. Kay enjoys teaching adults and believes anyone can learn the techniques of watercolor who has the desire. She wants her students, not to strive for perfection, but enjoy the freedom of creative expression. ========================================================== >-->From our Friend Annie :) _.---._ .' / '. / _/ \ / .-'` '. \ .' | ^ _ ^ | '. .' \ _ / \ / '.___.' Thanks LouiseA! -<>- / / <Staying Power (By George Price) On opening day of the 1954 baseball season, the Milwaukee Braves visited the Cincinnati Reds. Two rookies began their major league careers with that game. The Reds won 9-8 as Jim Greengrass hit four doubles in his first big-league game. A sensational debut for a young player with a made-for-baseball name! The rookie starting in left field for the Milwaukee Braves went 0 for 5. Not much of a start for a young player named Henry Aaron. What an interesting contrast. Jim Greengrass, who began with a great burst of glory, soon faded into obscurity. Henry Aaron, whose beginning left much to be desired, went on to become one of the greats of the game. This contrast points out a very important truth. It is not how you begin that makes the difference, but where you end up. Thomas Edison was once asked the secret of his success and he replied, "I start where other men give up." It is "staying power" that makes the difference. The same is true of the Christian life. It matters little how your life in Christ began, whether at a revival service or on a retreat or in your bathtub. The difference is not in how dramatic a beginning you had, but in how faithful you are. What kind of staying power do you have? Are you holding on? Are you walking with Him each day? Anyone can make a great start, but only the faithful have an impact in life. "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecto of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. " (Hebrews 12:1-3, NIV) --- ...Amen! Thanks LouiseA! See... A woman, renewing her driver's license at the County Clerk 's office, was asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself. "What I mean is, " explained the recorder, "do you have a job or are you just a ..?" "Of course I have a job," snapped the woman. "I'm a Mom." "We don't list 'Mom' as an occupation, 'housewife' covers it," Said the recorder emphatically. I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like, "Official Interrogator" or "Town Registrar." "What is your occupation?" she probed. What made me say it? I do not know. The words simply popped out. "I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations." The clerk paused, ball-point pen frozen in midair and looked up as though she had not heard right. I repeated the title slowly emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written, in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire. "Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do in your field?" Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing program of research, (what mother doesn't) In the laboratory and in the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out). I'm working for my Masters, (first the Lord and then the whole family) and already have four credits (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?) and I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money." There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door. As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants -- ages 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby) in the child development program, testing out a new vocal pattern. I felt I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just another Mom." Motherhood! What a glorious career! Especially when there's a title on the door. Does this make grandmothers "Senior Research associates in the field of Child Development and Human Relations" And great grandmothers "Executive Senior Research Associates?" I think so!!! I also think it makes Aunts " Associate Research Assistants." Please send this to another Mom, Grandmother, Aunt, And other friends you know. May your troubles be less, Your blessing be more, And nothing but happiness come through your door! -<>- _,,,_ .' `'. / ____ \ | .'_ _\/ / ) a a| / ( > | ( ) ._ / ) _/-.__.'`\ ( .-'`-. \__ ) `/ `-./ `. | \ \ \ jgs | \ \ \ \ |\ `. / / \ >All about Mom! By the time God made woman, He was into the second week of working overtime. An angel appeared and asked, "Why are you spending so much time on this one?" God answered, "Have you seen My spec sheet on her? She has to be able to run on Diet Coke, leftovers, have a kiss that can cure anything from a scraped knee to a broken heart. She heals herself when she is sick AND can work 18-hour days." The angel then noticed something, and reaching out, touched the woman's cheek. "Oops, it looks like You have a leak in this model," the angel said.. "I think you're trying to put too much into this one." "That's not a leak," God corrected, "that's a tear. The tear is her way of expressing her joy, her sorrow, her pain, her disappointment, her love, her loneliness, her grief and her pride." "Woman is truly amazing," the angel marveled. "She certainly is! Women have strengths that amaze men. They bear hardships and they carry burdens, but they hold happiness, love and joy. They smile when they want to scream. They sing when they want to cry. They cry when they are happy and laugh when they are nervous. They fight for what they believe in. They stand up to injustice. They don't take 'no' for an answer when they believe there is a better solution. They go without so others can have. They go to the doctor with a frightened friend. They love unconditionally. They cry when their children excel and cheer when their friends get awards. They are happy when they hear about a birth or a wedding. Their hearts break when a friend dies. They grieve at the loss of a family member, yet they are strong when they think there is no strength left. "They know that a hug and a kiss can help to heal a broken heart. Women come in all sizes, in all colors and shapes. They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you to show how much they care about you. The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning! They bring joy and hope. They have compassion and ideals. They give moral support to their family and friends. Women have vital things to say and everything to give." "Are there no flaws?" the angel asked. "Of course. Because nothing can be perfect, each woman will have her unique flaws. But there's one they all have in common. I've tried to get it out of this model, but even I can't seem to fix it." "What's that?" "They all tend to forget their worth." -<>- ,.s,os,osos,, ((S;%(S;S)S)S)SS;, ,(;s&;SS((&%(S(;(S;)%S;, ,;(S(&((S;%S(S((;)S)S&%)));, ,))JGS%S)SSS)S(S&(;S(%))S(&(; ((&s(;((;(S(%S(;)S%S)S))S;&))S); ;)s)%)`';& 'S`. Anderson Joyce Schowalter Iowa, USA It was 1952 and I was a sophomore in high school. An algebra class was dealing me fits and it wasn't sinking into my dull brain. The language of algebraic terms threw me for a loop. My teacher was Miss Rupp and my fear of her was second to none other I had faced before. Miss Rupp of the stern face and forbidding nature left me quaking in my white buck shoes. I hoped that she would not call on me for any answer. I knew I would not know the answer and her eagle eyes told me that she knew I wouldn't know the answer. Luck ran out one day and she called my name, told me to come to the blackboard and work the problem she would give me. I stood in front of that blackboard, my nose just a few inches away from it, and stared at the problem. My hand with the chalk in it didn't move. Why bother? I didn't know how to work the blasted problem. Finally Miss Rupp took the chalk and did this and that and came up with the answer. "Miss Stogdill, you can return to your seat," she told me. "Yes, Miss Rupp," I said, with my head down, as I slunk back to my seat. It seemed forever before our class was over and once it was, I headed for the door, ready for the great escape. I almost made it, but then I heard Miss Rupp say, "Miss Stogdill, I would like to see you at my desk." Inside I was saying, "But I don't want to see you," but I turned and made my way to stand before her. "Miss Stogdill, you are having far too much trouble with Algebra. You definitely need some help. If you can come in after school, I will help you until you understand the concept of Algebra, she said." What a relief, help! I agreed to come in and I did so. She spent time with me each night I could come in until I understood what she was trying to teach me. I ended up my time in her class with a B average and I owe it all to a woman who was more than an average teacher. She was an extraordinary teacher, one who went the whole way with her students. I was not the only one who benefited from this woman's teaching. It was years before I fully understood how much Miss Rupp cared for us, her stern and forbidding nature covered up a big heart, filled with love for those she taught. Indeed when she walked in to watch a school sports game, she was cheered more often than not. She was respected and she had earned it. She is long gone from this world we live in, but whenever I think of her, I say to myself, "Hats off, Miss Rupp, you deserve it." =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: ___ (___) /` `\ / /"\ \ \_/o o\_/ ( _ ) `\ /` /\\V//\ / /_ _\ \ \ \___/ / \/===\/ || || || || ||___|| |_____| jgs ||| / Y \ `"`"` >THE FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY Brennan's grandmother (Nana) asked him why he had not visited their house in a long time. In my heart she is always near As that is where she resides Although I may still shed some tears I know she is my guide. She continues to watch and help me through All of life's trials and tribulations She helps me to smile when I'm feeling blue To her I give this dedication. "Happy Mother's Day Mom; Can you hear me? I miss you and love you so You've helped me to become what I should be It's you who has helped me grow."
