Smith Leaves bounced over the grass, propelled by the wind. I knelt in front of freshly tilled soil. A leaf slapped against my leg, stuck for a moment, and fled with the next gust. Others followed -- a colorful march across the yard. I created a hole in the soil with my trowel and reached into the bag of bulbs at my side. I removed one, placed it in the hole, tenderly covered it, and shuffled to the side. Grass stained my jeans as I moved down the line -- dig, plant, cover. The bag was empty. The bulbs were planted. I showered the sweat and dirt from my body, and sat on my deck. The weakening sun warmed me, but the cool breeze and tumbling leaves reminded me winter would soon follow. The bulbs weren't sleeping. Their roots grew downward, drawing nutrients from the soil. The cool earth triggered cells to produce small leaves and flower buds under the ground, where they would wait for the warmth of spring. * * * * From my window, I watched the first snow of the year cover my flower bed. The soil, still warm from the waning sun, melted the first flakes, but was soon overcome. The snow built up. A month later, the ground was frozen solid. Winds whipped powdery snow into piles. Barren trees creaked and clattered with each gust. I threw a log on the fire, made a pot of tea, and waited. * * * * The days grew longer, the air warmer. Snow melted and formed puddles on the still frozen ground. At night, the surface of the puddles froze, but the water beneath soaked into the soil, feeding the bulbs. In the morning, there would be clear layers of ice where the puddles were. It shattered like glass beneath my boots. Spring came, the air warmed. I walked in the yard. Under my weight, water squeezed from the soil and filled the tracks I left behind. On the southern side of the house, close to the basement walls, grass became green. In my flower bed, shoots of green pushed through the surface. In a few weeks, they grew taller, reaching for the sun. Buds formed at their tips and burst into color. I smiled -- new life. A few weeks later, the flower pedals fell free and were carried off by the wind. The leaves continued to grow tall and strong, making food for new bulbs. The weather cooled. The leaves dried, browned, and withered away. Snow fell again. The new bulbs lie hidden under the soil. They would have their moment of glory. Nature took care of the bulbs. If they grew and bloomed too early, they'd die. They wouldn't be prepared for their environment. The cold would kill them. Once again, I threw a log on the fire. I trusted nature. The flowers would bloom again -- when it's time. -- Michael T. Smith ___________________________________________ Michael works as a project manger in Telecommunications and writes in his spare time. When bed-time finally came, I laid down the law: "We're putting on your pajamas, brushing your teeth, and reading ONE book. Then it's lights out! Her arms went around my neck in a gentle embrace, and she said, "We learned in Sunday school about little boys and girls who don't have mommies and daddies." Even after I'd been such a grouch, I thought, she was still grateful to have me. I felt tears begin to well up in my eyes, and then she whispered, "Maybe you could go be THEIR mom?" (author unknown) You would think that being aware of others who are in need would make us more appreciative for what we have, but that's not always the case. I can remembering growing up hearing those words every child (at least, every child in the United States) heard when we complained about not wanting to eat what was being served for dinner -- "You need to eat your vegetables. There are children in China who are starving right now." My first reaction was usually to think, "How is my eating this plate of food going to help them?" My second reaction was usually to think, "How about if we just stick this food in an envelope and ship it off to them?" Unfortunately, being aware of others who are in need does not always make us more appreciative for what we have. Though it should, it doesn't. Being aware of people in the world who are suffering famine doesn't seem to make us appreciate that we have plenty of food. Being aware of Christians in the world who are being persecuted for their faith doesn't seem to make us appreciate us that we have freedom of religion. Being aware of people in the world who have no family or friends doesn't seem to make us appreciate that we have both. Sadly, it seems that often the only thing that makes us appreciate something is having it removed from our own lives for a while. Think about it. When do you most appreciate the fact that you enjoy electricity and running water? I'm guessing (if you're like me) that it's after you've had one or the other unavailable for a while. In the prophets, over and over, God rebuked his people for ignoring the needs of people all around them...the Israelites were guilty of a lack of compassion: "Woe to you....who lie on beds of ivory, stretch out on your couches, eat lambs from the flock and calves from the midst of the stall....who drink wine from bowls, and anoint yourselves with the best ointments, but are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph." Open your eyes to the needs of those around you. Take advantage of opportunities to help those whom you can. And allow the needs of others to cause you to reflect on how blessed you are, and the responsibility you have to use what God has blessed you with in a way that will glorify Him. --- ...So True! Meanwhile, her mother is baking a cake and asks her daughter if she would like a snack, and the daughter says, "Absolutely Mom, I love your cake." "Here, have some cooking oil," her mother offers. Like so many things since our daughter's birth, I hadn't planned On A trip to this place. But I figured we'd see what they had since we Were There. "Hi, today is stuff a bag day. Would you like one?" the clerk Asked. "What is stuff a bag day?" "You take a bag and stuff it with what ever you want and it's Only $3. Best deal in town." "Okay, sounds great," I said, despite the fact I hadn't planned on buying anything. I took my six-year-old daughter's hand and we started to wander Around. Suddenly there was a tug on my hand and my attention was being directed to the shoe section. She shares my weakness for shoes, so we stopped for a minute to look. I let go of her hand and she reached out to touch a pair of shiny black shoes with a strap and silver buckle. "Buy me?" she inquires. "Oh, Sweetie, they are tap shoes. You aren't taking tap." "Buy me?" she repeats. "Well, let's try them on." She sits on the floor and removes her bright pink rain boots, with Barbie on the sides, and easily slides the new shoes on. A perfect fit. When she stands up she hears "click." She takes a step. Click, Click. Slowly recognition dawns, as she makes the connection between the shoes and her moving feet. Click, click, click. "Buy me?" with a hopeful look in her eyes. Again, "Buy me, Peas?" "Okay Sweetie, take them off and put them in the bag." We look around some more and get a few t-shirts, pants, books and games and a naked baby doll. Well, it's stuff a bag day -- might as well get my money's worth, I Think to myself. The sun has come back out as we emerge from our little side trip and we continue on our way. As we near the car, Amara reaches for the bag. As she climbs into the back seat, I give her the bag wondering what treasure she is looking for. The shoes, of course. She is my daughter after all. "My wear." It's not a question, so I took the tag off and helped her with the buckle. Our next stop was the grocery store and these shoes were made to make noise, especially on my little girl's feet. This could be Interesting... Click, click, click -- people turn to look as we enter the store. Click, click, click. I can feel the disapproving stares of the proper people. People who would never allow their daughter to wear tap shoes to the grocery store. I hold my head up with pride. The click, Click, click is music to my ears. "Excuse me dear. Is your daughter in tap this year?" "No". "Well why on earth would you allow her to wear tap shoes, here, Of All places? They make such a noise." "Yes, isn't it wonderful?" "Wonderful? My dear, this is not the place to wear those shoes." "Oh, I think this is the perfect place to wear them. You see she asked for them." "Just because she asked for them, doesn't mean you have to get them for her." "You don't understand," I said. "When she was a baby, we were told she would never walk or talk. It has taken a lot of hard work and patience but she ASKED for the shoes and the click, click, click says that she CAN Walk." My daughter, the one who never stays still, or quiet, will Graduate From grade twelve next year. It has not always been easy, but it has All Been worthwhile. She has taught me that it doesn't matter what others think. They don't walk in your shoes. And just like the ladies in the purple hats, sometimes you simply Have to wear tap shoes to the grocery store -- if for nothing else, just for the sheer joy of hearing the click, click, click. -<>- , }`-. , , \ \ '-' \ .-'{ _} . | ,`\ / ' ; .-;\ { \ | | / `/ '-.,/ ; | { -- -. Mazzella There is a reason why the beautiful state I live in is called "Almost Heaven" West Virginia. John Denver's song had it right. It often feels like Heaven here. Right now outside my window the Autumn leaves are beginning to change colors. The radiant reds are glowing in the sun. The peaceful yellows are rustling in the breeze. The brilliant burgundy's and outrageous oranges are making entire trees as bright as flowers. Even the fallen leaves are turning the paths into multicolored, crunchy carpets that are a delight to walk on. I can hear children laughing and see adults smiling as they stroll through these leaves and enjoy the wonderful scent of them in the air. Everywhere I look I can see God's colors painting the trees and mountains with beauty. If it isn't Heaven here then it certainly is close. It isn't just the mountains that make it Heavenly here either. I can see bits of Heaven in so many of the people too. There is a kindness in their smiles. There is a gentleness in their voices. There is a goodness in their actions. There is a patience in their manner. There is a peace in their souls. There is a love in their hearts. And there is a joy in their lives. Everyday they grow a little more in oneness with God. Everyday they bring a little more Heaven into this world. I feel truly blessed to live in such a beautiful state with such good people. West Virginia, however, isn't the only place that can be Almost Heaven. Any place on Earth can be Almost Heaven if we take our Heaven with us. How much Heaven is within you? No matter how much you said take heart in knowing that it can always be more. God gives us that choice every single day. Everyday we can choose to love more, give more, care more, and help more. Everyday we can choose to bring the joy of Heaven into our hearts and souls and then share it with the world. Everyday we can live in Almost Heaven while still here on Earth. -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment: Our Valuable ANCHOR http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/BibleStudy/ouranchor.html The Giver And The Gift http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/BibleStudy/givergift.html Our Gifts And Callings http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/BibleStudy/giftscallings.html Picture This! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/picturethis.html House Of Bones! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/hbones.html Boeing 727 Suite! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/727suite.html Beautiful Bridges! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/bridges.html Sweet Baby Overload http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/sweetoverload.html Tricks For Treats http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/tricksfortreats.html Telephone Sheep Art! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/phonesheep.html Worlds Largest Holes! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/holes.html -<>- >From Our Friend Geniann :) This is just one state! A horrible snowstorm stranded the regular minister in another town where he had been visiting a member in the hospital. The leaders of the congregation asked the young man to substitute for the regular minister. The young preacher started his sermon by explaining the meaning of a substitute. "If you break a window," he said, "and then place a piece of plywood over the hole -- that's a substitute." After the sermon, a well-intentioned woman wished to compliment the young man. As she enthusiastically shook his hand, she said: "You were no substitute. You were a real pane!" Ever gotten a compliment like that, where you went away scratching your head wondering how to take it? It's easy to assume the worst. We live in a world where people are more often inclined to put you down than to lift you up, where they would rather ridicule you than encourage you. Be different! Fletcher Eric Justian Washington, USA Oh the times our young family returned to New York City from vacation with just enough gas and no money for tolls! In 1971 our tight budget nearly ended our family vacation early. We were 30 years old, and had saved up just enough to go camping for two weeks with our young boys, ages 7 and 3. Heading north from the city around midnight, the car suddenly died. We coasted to the side of the New York State Thruway. My NYC born and raised husband was new to driving and had no clue what might cause an engine to die. I dug a flashlight out of the camping gear and we looked under the hood together, blankly. Just then a trooper stopped. He radioed a tow truck and kindly stayed with us while we waited for it. After talking to us he gently broke the news that it was probably an alternator problem. We could expect to pay about $70. I'm certain my face must have mirrored my husband's stricken expression. We'd planned to spend not more than $100 for the whole camping trip. The repairs would end our family vacation. The kind trooper left when the tow truck arrived. The 50-ish driver towed us to the gas station he owned. He prepared to work on our car, "since your kids are asleep and I'm awake." We moved the kids into their sleeping bags and they and I slept on two tired sofas in the station. I needed to be well rested to drive us back to the city. My husband joined the owner in the garage to learn something about cars and engines. When my husband woke me I reached for my purse. But the station owner insisted my husband had done most of the work. He would accept only $10 "for parts". I drove north from there, both of us happy our vacation could continue, though we'd have to pinch pennies for two weeks. For the next seven years we stopped at that station whenever we were near: to get gas, to get a taillight fixed, whatever. The owner always remembered us and exclaimed over how much our sons had grown. The last time we were at the station, just before we moved away to the Midwest, I insisted on paying the old alternator bill. The owner laughed and said it'd been paid many times over from our years of stops. Then he told us the story of the kind trooper who had waited with us in the night. When the tow truck had arrived, the trooper had paid half the bill without our knowledge, and alerted the station owner to our dilemma. Our $10 contribution had been a token. We all laughed as the owner told us how hard it was to invent the white lie about my husband's help that night. I still fondly remember these two people, who helped my family when they didn't have to. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: _____ _.-'" "'-._ ,-".-. .-."-. ,' .-. .-. `, / / _\ / _\ \ .-. | | ( | | ( | | .-. .-----\ \ | '---' '---' | / /-----. :---- |--| ', ,' |--| ----: :---- '-`|--| ^"-.,_______,.-;^ |--|`-' ----: '---....' | _ `-' | '....---' | [ '-"-.-"-. | \ | .-. .-. | / `. | | | | | | ,' `._ [___]|__]|__] _,' `--.._____..--' / / \ \ jgs / / \ \ .---'"=="\ /"=="'---.
