Whether it's a student going off to college, a soldier serving our country or a family separated by their vocation, all have one thing in common: homesickness. Homesickness is simply a feeling of disconnection. The trick to overcoming the homesick blues is to retain that connection to the home you left behind. There are several ways to stay connected, no matter how far from home. The Internet -- The Internet is a wonderful way to keep up with all that's going on back home. Email is a very inexpensive way to send messages, photos and small files. But the possibilities opened by cyberspace don't end here. Online chat is a great way to "talk" to someone from anywhere. Mega-Internet providers MSN and AOL both offer "Instant Messenger" services, free of charge. You can chat in real time until your fingers bleed, keeping up on all the hometown gossip without needing a second mortgage to pay the phone bill. You don't have to be an AOL or MSN subscriber to use these services. Just download the software from their websites, set up an account and tell your friends and family to do the same. Check out other chat groups, such as Yahoo! Groups, to see if there are any online chat communities for people from your hometown or state. If there isn't one, start one. Remember, misery loves company. It's always wonderful to find people in the same boat to relate to. Use the Internet to view websites from home. Many local television and college websites feature live aerial pictures of the city they're located in. Some local radio stations simulcast their programs online, so you can tune in anywhere. Most local media (newspapers and broadcast) have websites these days, where one can go to read up on the news and happenings from back home. The Phone -- Online communication is great, but sometimes you just need to hear a familiar voice. Follow E.T.'s advice and phone home -- often. Be thorough in shopping for the right long distance package. Phone cards can be a cost saving alternative, as can cellular programs. Figure out your phone usage and find the package that best suits your needs. Go Home -- Nothing on this earth can substitute for the warmth of being back home. Computers and telephones are no match for hugs and visits. When planning your budget, set some money aside each week for travel. This way, when time for a trip back home comes around, you won't have to max out your credit card. Start planning your next trip home before you leave the last one. Set a goal for when to return, and stay enthusiastic about it. This will give you something to look forward to when feeling blue about being so far away. The U.S. Mail -- If you have a homesick loved one living far away, this section is for you. There are few better balms for loneliness than a care package from home. Fill a box with homemade goodies, such as candies and cookies. Local gifts and trinkets can help. Audio and video letters are even better. The main thing is to be creative, have fun, and come up with something that screams "home" to your long distance loved one. A mail subscription to the local newspaper can be a great gift for those living far away. What better way to stay on top of news, weddings, and other important events from home. Most importantly, let your homesick blues sufferer know he or she is missed. Help them stay connected, and feel loved. Home is where the heart is. However, home is also where you hang your hat. Be careful not to let the homesick blues overwhelm you. Get connected where you are. Go out and get involved. Find a church to connect to. Join a fitness club. Find a neighbor to pal around with. Volunteer at a local charity. Connect with the community around you. Also maintain the connection with your hometown. Your life will be greatly enriched by the new connections you make, and the old connections you maintain. -- Chris and Jennie Courtney ___________________________________________ Chris and Jennie Courtney operate E-NCOURAGEMENT at http://www.e-ncouragement.com -- a web-based ministry focused on bringing peace, joy, comfort and love to people who need it. The truth of the matter is, we are not of this world. John 8: [23] And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. Like Jesus, we are not of this world. When we get yearning for our home away from home - our place with God almighty and our Lord Jesus Christ, the best way to help is for us to pray. We can also study God's Word - which is His will for us. To make us feel less homesick too, we can go to church or places where our brothers and sisters in Christ are gathered together in His name... Matt.18: [20] For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Nothing beats homesickness better than to have Christ in our midst to give us loving support and wisdom for our day! Just keep in mind... 1 John 4: [4] Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. I hope that in my final hour, In all honesty I can say, That somewhere in my lifetime, I have brightened someone's day. That maybe I have brought a smile To someone else's face, And made one moment a little sweeter, While they dwelled here in this place. Lord, please be my reminder And whisper softly in my ear... To be a "giver", not a "taker", In the years I have left here. Give to me the strength I need, Open up my mind and my soul. That I might show sincere compassion, And love to others before I go. It seems to not matter what good President Trump does these days, they will spin it to appear evil. In this record, the Pharisees, instead of Praising God for this man being made whole and freed from his snare of the devil, they accuse the redeemer, the Son of God of being in cahoots with the devil! They show not only their ignorance but indeed how pitted against God they really are. They try unsuccessfully to discredit Jesus Christ at every chance they get. Which is why this reminded me of the far left Democrats and News Media. Not that President Trump is any where as near as awesome as our Lord Jesus Christ, but that they appear to me to be just as evil as those Pharisees were back then to our Jesus. Realizing what had happened, embarrassed officials sent the Marx family an apology and an application to join. Groucho declined the invitation with the comment, "I wouldn't want to belong to any club that would have me as a member." Someone still tried to smooth over the incident by persuading the comedian to allow an application to be submitted for membership. The country club was embarrassed further when the application was denied. The reason? The Marx family was Jewish and the club was "restricted. " True to form, Groucho wrote back: "My wife is not Jewish. Can she go swimming and let our daughter wade up to her waist?" I love his use of humor, but Groucho effectively shines a spotlight on the prevalence and absurdity of prejudice. He must have felt, as did Sir Isaac Newton so many years earlier, that we "build too many walls and not enough bridges." I yearn for a time when we courageously break down those walls that divide and build wide bridges between one another. I long for a super-highway of compassion and acceptance spanning our differences that will unite us as one. As we ease into a new millennium, I dream of an age when people will finally be connected heart to heart and mind to mind. My greatest desire is that we somehow learn what it means to be family. -- Steve Goodier --- ...As President Trump said: "We are one people, with one destiny. We all bleed the same blood. Before each of us laid our lives like the squares of a quilt in many piles; an angel sat before each of us sewing our quilt squares together into a tapestry that is our life. But as my angel took each piece of cloth off the pile, I noticed how ragged and empty each of my squares was. They were filled with giant holes. Each square was labeled with a part of my life that had been difficult, the challenges and temptations I was faced with in every day life. I saw hardships that I endured, which were the largest holes of all. I glanced around me. Nobody else had such squares. Other than a tiny hole here and there, the other tapestries were filled with rich color and the bright hues of worldly fortune. I gazed upon my own life and was disheartened. My angel was sewing the ragged pieces of cloth together, threadbare and empty, like binding air. Finally the time came when each life was to be displayed, held up to the light, the scrutiny of truth. The others rose; each in turn, holding up their tapestries. So filled their lives had been. My angel looked upon me, and nodded for me to rise. My gaze dropped to the ground in shame. I hadn't had all the earthly fortunes. I had love in my life, and laughter. But there had also been trials of illness, and wealth, and false accusations that took from me my world, as I knew it. I had to start over many times. I often struggled with the temptation to quit, only to somehow muster the strength to pick up and begin again. I spent many nights on my knees in prayer, asking for help and guidance in my life. I had often been held up to ridicule, which I endured painfully, each time offering it up to the Father in hopes that I would not melt within my skin beneath the judgmental gaze of those who unfairly judged me. And now, I had to face the truth. My life was what it was, and I had to accept it for what it was. I rose and slowly lifted the combined squares of my life to the light. An awe-filled gasp filled the air. I gazed around at the others who stared at me with wide eyes. Then, I looked upon the tapestry before me. Light flooded the many holes, creating an image, the face of Christ. Then our Lord stood before me, with warmth and love in His eyes. He said, 'Every time you gave over your life to Me, it became My life, My hardships, and My struggles. Each point of light in your life is when you stepped aside and let Me shine through, until there was more of Me than there was of you. May all our quilts be threadbare and worn, allowing Christ to shine through! God determines who walks into your life ...it's up to you to decide who you let walk away, who you let stay, and who you refuse to let go.' When there is nothing left but God that is when you find out that God is all you need! Father, God, bless all my friends in whatever it is that you know they may need this day! And may their life be full of your peace, prosperity and power as he/she seeks to have a closer relationship with you through Jesus Christ. Amen. There was no way -- especially with tighter air travel rules after the September 11 attack -- that I could get my children and all of our gear onto and off of an airplane. However, my sister and her gang were so excited at the prospect of our visit, they cried the next time we were on the telephone together. Then I thought of my HeroicStories newsletters, and of all the kind people out there in the world, and I decided to go ahead and fly, hoping that I'd have good luck. Many people made our trip easier. When the officer at the metal detectors saw the two children, a double stroller, a car seat and me, he told my husband that he could get a pass to help us through security and to our gate. The airline personnel also took one look at us and wrote the pass that allowed my husband to help us through. We had no idea that this was possible, since now you must show a boarding pass to get through the checkpoint. We had assumed I'd be on my own. Once down the jetway, a flight attendant saw us and was instantly upon us. She took my toddler by the hand, lifted the car seat with her other hand, and saw them both to our seats. While I was folding the stroller, two other passengers offered to help. Our seatmate, Raina, was an angel. She colored pictures with my toddler, shared her tray table with us, and held the baby while I made restroom breaks. She was helpful and kind beyond all that I'd hoped. She even carried the car seat off the plane for me when we landed. As luck would have it, once we were on the ground my 2-year-old fell deep asleep and could not be roused. The lady across the aisle carried my sleeping toddler off the plane and placed her in the stroller for me. Of course, my sister and her children were there to meet us with hugs and kisses. It was a wonderful visit for us all. Without the assistance of these sympathetic strangers I don't know how I would have managed. I had visions of all three of us, myself and my two little ones, curled up and sobbing in our seats. That didn't happen because people were willing to help. Thank you to all of them, and thanks to HeroicStories for making me think it was possible to find compassionate strangers on my journey. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Laugh&Lift: "There is only one thing I know I am going to do in my life. I don't know if I'll be a success, a failure, married, single - but I do know that sooner or later, I'm going to die. The finality of that is kind of like God's little joke. No matter how cool you think you are, you will decompose. Most people live most of their lives ignoring death. Anything that will remind us, we remove from sight. This obsession with immortality is a bizarre thing. What that tells me, though, is we must be immortal." - Rich Mullins, the "Awesome God" guy .-""-._ / ___/ \ _&_ _.--""|/ `\| // \\ .' When he completed The Pieta, his greatest work of art, Michelangelo was eighty-seven; and Ronald Reagan was the most powerful man in the world as president of the United States at age seventy-five. Instead of sixty-five being the presumed age for retirement, it ought to be seen as the age when a lifetime of learning is focused on new achievement. Consider the following biblical figures over the age of eighty who were still going strong: Abraham becoming a father and raising his son Isaac; Moses and Aaron leading the children of Israel out of Egypt, through the wilderness, and to the Promised Land. ... The fact is, the older we get, the more accumulated wisdom and perspective we should have to bring to bear on new goals. Regardless of your age, consider replacing "retirement" with "transition" in your vocabulary. See life as a continual process of moving from one accomplishment to the next with God as your guide. Yes, age is a small part of growing old, but attitude is the largest. SUBSCRIBE INFO Want to receive a Christian inspirational item AND great clean humor in an email to you each day of the week? One summer day, they were packing for a camping trip and her daughter was asking one question after another. So Joyce gave her some chewing gum, which kept her mouth occupied for a while. The 2- year-old wandered off and sat on a stump beside the clothesline. The landlady asked her, "What do you have in your mouth, dear?" The 2-year-old replied, "I've got gum." The landlady said, "Who gave it to you?" "My mother gave it to me," the little girl replied. The landlady said, "That's nice. She must be a good mommy." The too-wise 2-year-old replied, "She tries." Problems just tumbled about me, and heavier came each task. "Why doesn't God help me?" I wondered, He answered, "You didn't ask".
