Like many, we enjoy watching the NFL games and rooting for our favorite teams. Lately, as with most everything in America, it has taken on a political side. People can no longer watch the game and have fun, they have to see many of the players taking a knee in protest to what they say is 'black oppression against the police'. That is all fine and dandy, but why do it during our Nation Anthem? That only shows disrespect for our country, flag and veterans who served so all of us could be free. It is most irritating and takes the fun out of watching a sporting event. So when President Trump actually spoke out about this and said the owners and CEO's of the NFL should put a stop to the people who do this, we totally agreed with him. Of course, the NFL players didn't agree and got all upset and decided to protest even more. Over the weekend, I heard that as many as 1 in 8 NFL players took a knee during their games. What really got me is that I saw on Lou Dobbs a video of an NFL Steelers player down on all fours like a dog lifting his leg as if to pee! That was it for me! I'm done with the NFL. Paul says it's only college football games for him from now on. So far they are not politicized. This must have upset me more than I realized as Tuesday very early in the morning, I was kept awake for two hours going through a poem in my head. This is normally how I get new teachings and poetry. They come to me early morning and I can't get them out of my head so I can go back to sleep unless I ask God to help me sleep but remember what I was just thinking of and working on later when I can write it all down. That said – let’s not pretend Trump is the first or even close to the most egregious. He’s fired!” Should he have used curse words? Oh, I guess you could do without it if you’re someone who believes the presidency is something our children lean on as a surrogate parent. Perhaps you’re someone concerned about the coarsening of our politics. Yes, well, I still won’t explain Monica Lewinski and Anthony Weiner to my kids. Trump’s language is the least of my concerns. Karl Rove, George W. Bush’s long time political advisor lamented over the weekend Trump missed the opportunity to instruct the country and the NFL on what the flag symbolized and why it was bigger than any of our petty differences. Donald Trump’s entire campaign was built on “Make America Great Again!” People who voted for him believe the greatness of our nation and those who’ve fought and died to defend and protect her is threatened. They understand the Bill of Rights. They understand enemy threats are taking advantage of our ludicrous immigration system. They understand we’re broke. They understand the traditions and culture that make us unique are in the midst of an assault. Trump voters stand for the flag in classrooms, at sports games, during parades and concerts, etc. because they believe that flag and the anthem are bigger than any one of them. It’s not about them. It’s about an idea. It’s about the tiny one percent of them who lay their lives on the line when called to defend and protect the rest of us. It’s about goodness and decency and the love of the gift of freedom never bestowed on another nation on Earth. None of which is taken for granted or misunderstood. Is there a h@ll of a lot wrong, or unjust, or broken in this nation? Sure. Fine. But the flag and the anthem are the beacon in that storm. They symbolize what we strive to achieve and all we have achieved. In other words, in sports parlance, “hate the player not the game.” Donald Trump is talking to the majority – people who believe the country is inherently good and have no time for those who would tear it down. Poll after poll says its not even close. He tapped the rich vein of patriotism and pride of country that runs far deeper than spoiled, malcontent athletes on a football field. When Trump comments on the Emmys, or Meryl Streep, or the NFL and their incessant attacks on anyone not part of their club – he inspires and speaks for those without a microphone and a fat bank account. He speaks for his voters who are tired of being bullied by their “betters” on stages meant to entertain. Perhaps Trump’s greatest gift is his ability to crystallize just who and what normal Americans are up against. Every time pundits say he “lowers” himself commenting on sports, pop culture, etc. – I couldn’t disagree more profoundly. He drives his opposition to such rage and hate they act in outrageous and unrelatable ways. Viewers at home are watching as NFL players and owners are kneeling during the anthem and their favorite actors are participating in Hollywood hate-orgies masked as award shows. Advantage Trump. Miller California, USA I live in California, and do a lot of driving on the San Francisco Bay Area freeways. Often I see different local police cars, or those of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) zooming past. Sometimes they're parked by the side of the road where they may have pulled over a motorist; sometimes they're assisting at an accident scene. When I see this, I try to remind myself that the police are meant to be there to help people, to enforce the laws, and to try to keep the public safe. Perhaps because I'm white, middle class, and drive a decent-looking car, I rarely have been subjected to a traffic stop. Yet I often do feel fear in the pit of my stomach when I see the flashing lights of a police car in my rear view mirror. In August of 2011 I was heading home from a visit to my mom, who lives in Sacramento. Driving south down Highway 880 I noticed flashing lights in my rear view mirror. A CHP car was coming up fast on the right, lights and sirens going. I slowed down just in case, as did all the cars around me, to around 50 mph. The CHP officer drove up to just ahead of the pack of cars I was in. Then he did the most extraordinary thing. From the right lane of the freeway he began to zigzag back and forth across all four lanes, at around 60 mph to start with, lights flashing. He repeated this maneuver around 10 times, slowing down slightly with each crossing of the four or five lanes of freeway. This effectively slowed the entire pack of cars, until we were all moving at 20 mph or less. He maintained about a 50-yard lead on the pack, and everyone around me carefully kept that distance. Every car in the pack following him stopped when he pulled up in the number two lane, got out of the car, grabbed a big piece of shredded retread from a semi-truck's tire, and threw it safely onto the edge of the freeway. He got back in his car, door still open, and drove over to the next piece of retread, in the #3 lane, which was small enough that he bent over, picked it up while still seated, and threw it into the driver's side of his car. He repeated doing this, moving from piece to piece, until the hazard was completely cleared. We continued to follow him, very slowly. This entire incident took ten minutes. In today's world, it's hard to keep faith that we're here to take care of each other, and so easy to let cynicism take root. To the CHP officer: Thank you for plunging in to do what had to be done to keep our highways and drivers safer. The countless sacrifice they made for freedoms we enjoy, For every man, every woman, every girl, and every boy. If you see a warrior, please give them all our love, For the heart that beats within them is a gift from God above. We're thankful, oh so thankful, for that heart we have admired, For giving so unselfishly, although it may be tired. On Veterans Day and all the days that come before and after, We thank you for allowing us a life of hope and laughter. To wake each day knowing what you must have seen and heard, It's hard to find the thoughts to share - there isn't just one word. What can we say? What should we say? A debt we just cannot repay. "What are the advantages?" inquired the prospective buyer. "The advantage is that you can always tell which way the wind is blowing." It is important to know "which way the wind is blowing". But it is also possible to allow that knowledge to affect us more than it ought to. I heard of a well-know hobo during the Great Depression of the 1930's who was asked how he decided which direction he would go every morning. He said, "It's easy. I find the way the wind is blowing, face away from it, and just let it blow me along." And it's easy for us all to live our lives in just that way. Politicians are famous for doing it. Before taking a position, they'll take a poll and see how many people in the country believe one way or the other. But we're all guilty at times of allowing the "majority opinion" around us to shape who we are and what we do. It's so easy to look around to see which direction everybody else is headed and just turn our backs to the wind and drift along. And rather than make an effort to change the world (which is very difficult), we follow the easier path of letting the world determine the direction we take. May these words serve to remind us of what our task as Christians is: "Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." Caroline, 3, sleeps in a regular full-sized bed, no longer a crib. Recently she found her mother's fingernail scissors, hid them in her room and during her nap time she cut a hole in her new, floral fitted bed sheet. The fist- sized hole was in the upper left side of the sheet, when facing the headboard from the foot of the bed. When Sandi discovered she had done this, she showed the hole to her mother when she arrived home from work. Her mom sewed the hole as best she could. The following week the same sheets were laundered and put back on the bed. Caroline announced to Sandi, "Remember the hole I cut in my new sheet? Well, sometimes the hole is there, and sometimes it's gone!" Sandi didn't explain to her that the sheet was put back on her bed in the opposite direction so that the same hole was then in the lower right corner of the bottom/fitted sheet instead of in the upper left corner! On a family visit to Tucson Katelyn saw a train on the side of the highway and wanted to count the cars. It was a very long train.
