I am thanking God that even though we are in the midst of this 'war' as our Ohio governor calls it, I was able to get my eye fixed at the Pajka Eye Center this last Thursday. Before I was squinting and having trouble reading my computer screen from 6 inches away and now I'm a comfortable arms length away from the screen seeing it with no trouble. Praise God! I am most thankful to Dr. Pajka and his staff for braving this virus crisis and helping those of us who need their skills the most. Alex greeted his TV audience and contestants Elaine, a New York librarian; Larry, a tax attorney from Minneapolis; and the returning four-day champ, Sylvia, a journalist turned stay-at-home mom from Phoenix -- my heroine. The big blue board splashed categories across the studio as my husband, Chris, and I settled in for the duration. Juggling questions like a Barnum and Bailey circus act, Sylvia, Elaine and Larry zipped through inquiries like, "Al Gore was one of the speakers at the 1992 U.N. Earth Summit held in this South American city" ("What is Rio de Janeiro?") "Of 9, 13, 20 or 100, the age of Betty Parris, one of the first people to make an accusation in the Salem Witch Trials?" Tossing her russet mane, Elaine picked up another $900 as she correctly answered, "What is nine?" Blond and petite, Sylvia hit it big with the Daily Double in Songs' Later Verses: "I don't want clever conversation, I don't want to work that hard" is heard in what pop hit?" Answer: "What is, Just the Way You Are?" Larry led Elaine by $2,000 after the Double Jeopardy round. But neither the Juris Doctor nor the "librarian with two master's degrees" could stop Sylvia the Steam Roller. The stay-at-home mom was wiping up the floor, outdistancing her nearest competitor by $3,600 going into Final Jeopardy. But the match wasn't a runaway. It would come down to careful wagering in the Final Jeopardy category of Popular Fiction. I whooped as the blue box binged and Alex read the Final Jeopardy question: "This series of over 200 books began with Kristy's Great Idea." "I know this! I know this!" I hooted, sure that Sylvia did, too. Her answer was, "The Boxcar Children." "I'm sorry, that's incorrect" Alex smiled, shaking his head. "No way!" I spouted. Alex the Omniscient was mistaken. There was no way Sylvia could be wrong. After all, her answer was my answer. She had to be right. "Did she risk more than $3,000?" Alex asked. Like any self-respecting writer turned stay-at-home mom, Sylvia wagered her entire wad. She lost it all. I pouted as Elaine was crowned "the new Jeopardy champion." Jeopardy! was over and I snuggled up with my four-year old son to read "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street." Voice thick with sleep, Josiah announced, "Mommy, this is just like Heaven." Dr. Seuss is good. But not THAT good. "What do you mean?" I asked, "What is heaven like?" "It's like this," Josiah replied from his burrow of blankets, "all warm and fuzzy and nice and love-y." I nodded. "Except there's one bad thing about heaven," Josiah the Theologian frowned. "What's that?" "Heaven's soldiers." I had to bite. "Who are they?" Josiah looked up at me, rolling his droopy eyes. "You know, those bad soldiers who put Jesus on the cross, where He died for our sins. They were bad soldiers. But God loves even bad soldiers." We returned Marco to Mulberry Street with his "plain horse and wagon" and it was time for kisses and bed time prayers. Josiah bowed his head and addressed the Almighty, "Dear Lord," he boomed in a voice that could give Pavarotti a run for his money, "Thank You for this day..." Josiah prayed for Mommy and Daddy, asked God to bless his brothers, stuffed animals, intrepid AWANA teacher, and Eve, our yellow Lab. He wrapped up with, "God, are You listening? Can You call me? When You want me, I'm right here. My phone number is..." Well. The correct answer to the Final Jeopardy question? "What is The Babysitter's Club?" I knew that. In fact, I can usually answer most Jeopardy! questions without too much brain strain. But if you want answers to real questions, don't look at me. Ask my preschooler. He knows -- "God, are You listening? Can You call me? When You want me, I'm right here." -- Kristine Lowder __________________________________________________ Kristine makes her home in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and their four sons. Most people keep a bottle in the medicine cabinet to pour on cuts and scrapes, or keep a bottle in the laundry room to treat blood stains, but good, old, household H2O2 has a variety of uses you might not know about. Mouth rinse Hydrogen peroxide is a common active ingredient in many mouthwashes. Save money on mouthwash by mixing equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water and swish it around your mouth. Bonus: It'll help whiten your teeth. Disinfect toothbrushes and dental appliances Toothbrushes should be replaced every three months or after you have a cold, but in the meantime, soak your toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide to kill germs. Clean fruit and veggies If you're looking for an alternative to expensive fruit and vegetable washes, spritz a little food-grade hydrogen peroxide on them instead to help clean bacteria away, then rinse thoroughly. Whiten clothes without bleach Hydrogen peroxide can be used as a general bleach for whites in your wash. Instead of bleach, add half a cup to your wash cycle. Kill dust mites in your mattress Dust mites are almost inevitable, but they don't have to build up. Spray hydrogen peroxide on your bare mattress to rid it of any invisible critters. Get rid of mildew in your humidifier A moldy, mildewy humidifier helps no one. That's why the Mayo Clinic recommends cleaning it every three days. Start with soap and water and then disinfect it with a hydrogen peroxide and water solution. =========================================================== >-->From Archives InspiredBuffalo: ,;;;;;, ,;;;;;;;;, ;;;'____ ; ;;;(\\\\\; `/'((||||| ___< C))|||| ,' \__(((||), | \ _)))))))\,_ /| |/"\`\`""""' |) ; \ \ ) \_____/_| | |\ \' _.,-' | | ' \ \.,-' _./ | ( _,-\ _.-'' | ; "'|___\__.-' ; ) |----| _.--,;' ; ,' , | ( __.,-' | ,' ,' `""'' `. | ; ) `, ( ) | ( ,' | | ( | | | | | | | |___________| | | | | Normand Veilleux based on work by Tua Xiong >It's About Relationship "I have been at the bedside of many people in their final moments, when they stand on the edge of eternity, and I have never heard anyone say, "Bring me my diplomas! So, for that matter, does heroism. Some acts of heroism are larger-than-life. They take place on such a gigantic scale that they are almost impossible to comprehend. The heroic acts of the passengers on Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001, which resulted in the airliner crashing into the fields near Shanksville, Pa., instead of... well, whatever target terrorists had in mind... is an example of heroism on a grand scale. We read about it. We are inspired by it. We celebrate it. But we rarely experience it in a personal way that is meaningful and relevant to our everyday lives. But there are other acts of heroism that are smaller and more intimate, that happen almost every day in our lives. These are not the stuff of which feature films are made and to which impressive memorials are erected. But that doesn't make them any less heroic, especially not to those whose lives are affected by them. For example, I mourned last week with my friends in West Virginia for the 13 miners who were lost in the tragic Sago Mine disaster. That heartbreaking loss to families and communities is almost incalculable. But through all of the anguish and controversy, I was touched and inspired by the heroic act of several of the lost miners, who used their last breaths to write comforting words to their families and to the families of their fallen colleagues. "The notes said they weren't suffering, they were just going to sleep," said one victim's daughter, who added that the message in all the notes was clear: "Your dad didn't suffer." What sort of courage does that take? At a time when you would think that the natural human inclination would be toward self-protection and preservation, these men reached out with tenderness and compassion toward those whom they would leave behind. No, they weren't able to heroically conquer the physical obstacles that held them beneath the ground. But they were able to conquer the selfishness and narcissism that holds most of the world captive these days in order to give their loved ones the one thing that only they could give: peace. Larger- than-life? Maybe not. But heroic? Absolutely. Similar real-life heroism was exhibited, in my view, by a village police officer in upstate New York, who was running for the Town Board in last November's elections. In his political advertising, he mentioned his experience as a police officer and the fact that he had been awarded a "Medal of Honor" from village trustees for work he did at Ground Zero on Sept. 11, 2001. When a New York City officer lambasted the ad and said it "disgraced" the memory of his fellow New York City and Port Authority officers who lost their lives on Sept. 11, the upstate officer immediately pulled the ad and apologized, indicating that, even though he DID receive his village's "medal of honor" for his Sept. 11 service, "I would never dishonor the memories of those who fell or those who served on that day of days." But this apology wasn't enough for the New York City officer, who continued his attacks on the upstate officer. Now, I don't really know why the big city officer was so worked up over a town board election in a small village in upstate New York. I just know that the upstate officer handled the attacks with dignity, class and grace. I'm sure it was tempting to fight vitriol with vitriol and to question the "heroism" of so mean-spirited a bully. But he never did, not once. At a time when political rhetoric is often so angry and divisive, I find that kind of restraint refreshing, maybe even heroic. Not larger-than-life, just life-size. And sometimes that's best size of hero to be. By Joseph Walker valuespeak@msn.com -<>- _______=C_________________O ) ==_]]]]]]========= /________/(___) MJP >THREE BULLETS There once was a man who had nothing for his family to eat. He had an old rifle and three bullets. So, he decided that he would go out hunting and kill some wild game for dinner. As he went down the road, he saw a rabbit. He shot at the rabbit and missed it. The rabbit ran away. Then he saw a squirrel and fired a shot at the squirrel and missed it. The squirrel disappeared into a hole in a cottonwood tree. As he went further, he saw a large wild turkey up in a tree, but he had only one bullet remaining. A voice spoke to him and said, "Pray first, aim high and stay focused." However, at the same time, he saw a deer which would provide more meat than the turkey. He brought the gun down and aimed at the deer. But, then he saw a rattlesnake between his legs about to bite him, so he naturally brought the gun down further to shoot the rattlesnake. Still, the voice again said to him, "Pray first, aim high and stay focused." So, the man decided to listen to God's voice. He prayed, then aimed the gun high up in the tree, and shot the wild turkey. The bullet went into the turkey, deflected off a bone and hit the deer, killing it. When the gun fired, it knocked the man off balance, he stepped on the rattlesnake's head which killed it and fell backwards into a pond. When he stood up to look around, he had fish in all his pockets, a deer and a turkey with which to feed his family. The snake was dead simply because the man listened to God. Moral of the story: Keep God first and everything else will follow. Pray first before you do anything. Aim high in your goals, and stay focused on God. Never let people or things discourage you concerning your past. Do not look to man for your blessings, but look only to God. Have a blessed day everyone. -<>- ooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooo oooooooo oooo oooooooo ooooooo oooo ooooooo oooooo oooo oooooo oooooo oooo oooooo ooooo oooo ooooo oooooo oooooo oooooo oooooo oooooooo oooooo ooooo oooooooooooo ooooo oooooo oooo oooo oooo oooooo oooooooooo oooo oooooooooo oooooooo oooo oooooooo oooooooo oooo oooooooo oooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooo Bob Allison >"Connecting the Peaces" "I saw a sign in front of a church that said, 'If life is a puzzle, look here for the missing peace.' It suggests that along with reading the Word, meditation, prayer and trust, you need to learn about that missing peace. And you need to learn about it in the church environment. Peace can be contagious. We learn much about the peace of God by fellowship with others who know the Prince of Peace. Peace also comes from obedience--by knowing you're in God's will and surrendering to Him. Philippians 4:9 says, 'Those things which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do; and the God peace shall be with you.' That's an important biblical message. 'Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace' (Psalm 37:37). Many people haven't associated peace with obedience, but the Bible is clear: 'Great peace have they which love thy law; and nothing shall offend them' (Psalm 119:165). In fact, when I counsel a fretful soul, I usually ask, 'Is there something you are doing that is not in harmony with God's will?' Often they will admit to being disobedient in some area. Would you want your children to be at peace if they were disobeying you? Likewise, God loves you too much to let you have peace when you are disobeying your conscience and His will." (Love plays a big part here. Jesus said,'If you love me you will keep my commandments.') Jonah is a great example of this--running west when God said go east. He soon found himself in the storm, having lost his peace when he went directly against the will of God. The Bible is full of similar stories that remind us of this principle. 'The work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever' (Isaiah 32:17)" Taken from Doug Batchelor's book "The Last Elijah Message" (Heaventus...07/02/04) --- ...My two cents on this... _____ (((\\\\\ )_ \\\| / \\|\/ \\( ), & \) ( (( |` \\ ))) _ | \` __| ` | , \ ` , \ | \ ,\ , \ ' \/ \_ \/ \ `_,`-._ ` \ ejm / `-. _ \ ` / ,`. \ === / '== =`. | ==== / | === ` / /========= / | / , /______| / , ======== __-' | = === / ,======= ' - -- ( \ \ \ ` \ ` \ ` \_____ \ / ` _/ / '-- ' We often say 'Where were you God or Why, God?" when disaster strikes or something bad happens to us. To better understand what happens, consider this. You tell your child, "Don't eat those apples from that tree." Your child doesn't listen to you and eats an apple off the tree you told him not to. While getting and eating the apple, he hides from your view knowing you wouldn't like it if you saw him. Later he develops a belly ache from eating the green apple. In his pain and anguish, he wonders why you let him eat that nasty apple. When you find out what he has done, you ground him as punishment for going against your rule and give him medicine for his upset stomach. , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' Like you with your child, God gives us good 'laws' or rules that are best for our health and safety. Unlike you, God gives us total freedom of choice in this His 'Day of Grace' to do exactly what we want to do without Him punishing us like was back in His Day of The Law - which was like running into a brick wall if you went against God. The Law was rules with consequences already set in place. God wasn't doing it, it was the people doing what they knew they shouldn't do. Like a parent saying to their child, if you do this, you are going to be in big trouble! Now, even in this Day Of Grace, we still often suffer the consequences of going against God by doing something He told us not to do. It can be an immediate consequence by way of poor health and/or we may be in real trouble. What many don't understand is that when we go against God, we are, in effect, distancing ourselves from God. Often so much so that we are easy prey for the devil. When we push God away by our own choices and actions, that leaves God unable to intervene against the devil on our behalf. God gave us freedom of will. God will never go against what He has given you - your will. That is why when Jesus was shown his fate on the cross, Jesus cried to God in prayer... Luke.22: [42] Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. [43] And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. Jesus knew that sometimes, bad things happen for a divine purpose. He knew God would not MAKE Him die on the cross for all mankind, so Jesus gave His life for us by surrendering His will to that of God's. God only will intervene and help us if we ask Him to... It was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote. The women were innocent and defenseless. And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of "obstructing sidewalk traffic." They beat Lucy Burn, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women. Thus unfolded the "Night of Terror" on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote. For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms. When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press. So, refresh my memory. Some women won't vote this year because-- why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining? Last week, I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO's new movie "Iron Jawed Angels." It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my say. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder. All these years later, voter registration is still my passion. But the actual act of voting had become less personal for me, more rote. Frankly, voting often felt more like an obligation than a privilege. Sometimes it was inconvenient. My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women's history, saw the HBO movie, too. When she stopped by my desk to talk about it, she looked angry. She was--with herself. "One thought kept coming back to me as I watched that movie," she said. "What would those women think of the way I use--or don't use--my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn." The right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her "all over again." HBO released the movie on video and DVD. I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum. I want it shown on Bunco night, too, and anywhere else women gather. I realize this isn't our usual idea of socializing, but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order. It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy. The doctor admonished the men: "Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity." Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know. My mother, father, and five older brothers saved up for it. I was so happy because I could follow my brother, Khanh, around the block. We rode around with the neighborhood kids. Since I was the youngest of the group I was always behind. One day Khanh, two other kids and I were riding up and down a steep hill. We were on our last run because it was getting late. Half-way down the hill my right foot slipped off the pedal. I tried to get it back on but I just couldn't. Everybody was getting farther and farther away. I panicked and screamed for my brother but he couldn't hear me. At the curve at the bottom of the hill I knew I had to do something. I couldn't slow down, lost control and toppled over. I skidded and tumbled on asphalt for a few yards. I finally rolled to a stop face down. I was afraid to move. Everyone heard the bike crash and came running. My brother rolled me over and one of the kids said I was bleeding. I'd lost my shoes along the way. I was bleeding around the toes, ankles, shin, knees, elbows, shoulders and fingers. I had cuts on my face and head, but the most severe was a deep cut on my chin. It was split open to the bone. My brother was torn between staying with me or going to get help. Finally one of the kids ran to my house. He returned with my brother Sonny. Sonny panicked because of the blood, too. No one knew what to do. There were no adults around; no one was home. As we stood there a few cars passed by. Some slowed down to see what happened but nobody stopped to help. Sonny left to call my parents and 911. As we waited, a car pulled up and asked what had happened. Hearing the story, the gentlemen stopped his car, got out, and talked to Khanh. Khanh picked me up, got in the car with me in his arms and then the man drove us to our house. Sonny was on the phone with my brother Nick, who was at work. The man told Nick which hospital he would take me to, and then drove us there. The doctor gave me five stitches on my chin, cleaned up my cuts and scrapes, and made me take some medicine. By the time I was patched up my whole family had arrived to take me home. The gentlemen had already left, and I never knew his name. I had wanted to thank him for stopping and going out of his way to make sure a stranger was safe. Now as an adult I try to help people when I can... because someone helped me when they didn't have to. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From LaughAndLift: When a converted drunkard was asked, "Do you believe that Jesus changed water into wine?" he replied, "Yes, I have seen Him change whiskey into groceries, gambling tickets into furniture, and a brokenhearted wife into a radiant Christian. '''.' >On Your Side (By Ted Torkelson, Monmouth, Oregon) Two Scottish schoolboys out for a hike one morning came to a cliff overlooking the sea. As they stood admiring the scenery and listening to the breakers below, they heard in the distance the blast of a hunter's horn, the baying of hounds, and the beat of horses' hooves. A hunting party on the trail of game, they thought. And they were right. Soon a deer rushed out of the underbrush panting with fear, obviously the object of the chase. The boys watched the terrified animal pause at the edge of the cliff as if debating what to do, whether to jump for its life into the sea below or run to the left or the right. How the boys wished they could help it! Suddenly, the deer turned sharply to one side and sped away along the edge of the cliff, quickly disappearing from sight. The boys knew that the hunters would soon arrive in hot pursuit. "What shall we say if they ask us which way the deer went?" the younger boy said. "Oh, we'll just say we don't know," replied the older one. "But that would be lying," the younger objected. "We don't want to do that." Then, just as the hunters arrived on the scene, an idea struck the older boy that solved the dilemma. When the hunters asked if the boys had seen the deer and which way it had gone, he said, "It's not fair to ask us. We're on his side." A simple story, but how profoundly suggestive of Christ's care for His people here on earth! And how reassuring. He's on our side. The Bible says so, in just those words. Read Psalm 118:6, NKJV: "The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?" -<>- "Let us study the visible creation as we will; take the anatomy of the smallest animal; look at the smallest grain of corn that is planted in the earth, and the manner in which its germ produces and multiplies; observe attentively the rosebud, how carefully it opens to the sun, and closes at its setting; and we shall see more skill and design than in all the works of man." - Francois Fenelon ,(()). ,;;;;. __ ________ _____ ___ ((_ _));'_`'_( _| __ __ __ _| _| _| __ __ () \ /)\ ) / (_|__ _|-_| _(_|(_|(_|__ _|-- ((\ O(() \ O / _____(_|(_|_____________(_|_ SSt >Praise God in the rain... If you can find beauty in the colors of a small flower, then you still have hope. If you can find pleasure in the movement of a butterfly, then you still have hope. If the smile of a child can still warm your heart, then you still have hope. If you can see the good in other people, then you still have hope. If the rain breaking on a roof top can still lull you to sleep, then you still have hope If the sight of a rainbow still makes you stop and stare in wonder, then you still have hope. If the soft fur of a favored pet still feels pleasant under your fingertips, then you still have hope. If you meet new people with a trace of excitement and optimism, then you still have hope. If you give people the benefit of a doubt, then you still have hope. If you still offer your hand in friendship to others that have touched your life, then you still have hope. If receiving an unexpected card or letter still brings a pleasant surprise, then you still have hope. If the suffering of others still fills you with pain and frustration, then you still have hope. If you refuse to let a friendship die, or accept that it must end, then you still have hope. If you look forward to a time or place of quiet and reflection, then you still have hope. If you still buy the ornaments, put up the Christmas tree or cook the turkey, then you still have hope. If you still watch love stories or want the endings to be happy, then you still have hope. If you can look to the past and smile, then you still have hope. If, when faced with the bad, when told everything is futile, you can still look up and end the conversation with the phrase "yeah....BUT.." then you still have hope. Hope is such a marvelous thing. It bends, it twists, it sometimes hides, but rarely does it break. It sustains us when nothing else can. It gives us reason to continue and courage to move ahead, when we tell ourselves we'd rather give in. Hope puts a smile on our face when the heart cannot manage. Hope puts our feet on the path when our eyes cannot see it. Hope moves us to act when our souls are confused of the direction. Hope is a wonderful thing, something to be cherished and nurtured, and something that will refresh us in return. And it can be found in each of us, and it can bring light into the darkest of places. NEVER lose hope. - Author Unknown --- , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' ...See This - The Christian's hope...
