Hebrews 4:16 "But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. James 1:6 Last edition we talked about troubles; how they are a consistent part of every day. And because they are a part of everyone's day, each of us has a choice to make on how we are going to deal with them. We can worry or we can have faith. Worry finds it's root in fear, which is the opposite of faith. If not controlled, worry creates doubt and doubt leads to an inability to receive from God. All available evidence, in scripture and in worldly data, shows worry to be both ineffective and destructive. Faith, on the other hand, is the foundation that God has provided for us. It is a source of stability and strength to overcome our troubles. It brings comfort in the midst of turmoil - a peace that goes beyond our understanding. How very simple the choice seems when presented in those terms. But life has a way of making the simplest of choices not seem so simple after all. Major life changing events often seem insurmountable and it's a natural reaction for us to feel some panic. In some ways it reminds me of being on a ship in a hurricane (remember that I was in the Navy for 28 years - so don't think me strange when I relate to things this way. James spent some time at sea and shares my view!). Anyone who saw the recent George Clooney movie about the perfect storm has some sense of what that can be like. In our mind's eye, dark clouds gather to block the sun, the wind howls so loud we can't think, and the waves of doubt and fear lift skyward and come crashing down on us with thunderous blows. Again and again and again. It feels like an endless march of forces seemingly bent on destroying our hope and our faith. All is darkness and confusion around us. Our senses reel from the impact. There seems no direction we can chose to escape, no refuge in which to seek comfort and rest. But in the midst of this assault, we need to force ourselves to ask these critical questions. Are God's promises any less valid today than they were yesterday? Does He love us any less? Are we any less valuable to Him? Has the price He paid for our salvation, for our adoption into His family as His sons and daughters, become less precious to Him today than it was when Jesus hung on the cross at Calvary and He had to turn His eyes away because it hurt so badly to see His Son's suffering? No. No. No. And NO!!! Do I understand everything that is going on right now? No I don't. I freely admit I don't understand. But if I trust the Father, our heavenly Father, I don't need to understand. I only need to place my hand in His and hold on with all the strength I have. He will take care of the rest. By way of illustration, there is an incident in the Bible I'd like to share with you. I pray it encourages you as much as it did this old sailor in trying to deal with the current "storm" of troubles. "Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. Matthew 8:24-26 (emphasis added) As joint heirs with Jesus, we have the same measure of faith as the one who slept peacefully during the storm and the same measure of authority as the one who rebuked it and brought calm. Instead of bowing to the storm (worry and fear) we can take authority over it - like Jesus. We may not have all the answers, but we have the one we need. The Father will care for us and bring us safely home. I am, as always, a work in progress, sheltered under His wings and overwhelmed by His love, Steve Hall -<>- ,"=-. / _),`'". Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me. Isaiah 49:15-16 Can you imagine the idea of a mother forgetting her baby? It doesn't seem possible - we've all seen how mothers care for their babies. They listen for the slightest cry, they cuddle them, they play with them, they talk silly baby talk to them. Forget their baby? Impossible! God tells us that even if a mother might forget her baby, He will never forget YOU! You are always on His mind, each and every moment of your day. He has engraved your name on the palm of His hands so that He will never forget you - the scars of the wounds that kept Him on the cross become a loving reminder to Him of how valuable you are! Right now, you might be feeling alone and abandoned, wondering where your friends are, if your family cares, if God is really there . . . look at the verses above from Isaiah - God will NEVER forget you! He gave His only begotten Son so that you, who choose to believe, would not perish but have everlasting life with Him. The stresses and worries of everyday living can seem overwhelming, but when you look at God's love for you, they fade into nothing in the light of eternity. Lord, be with each of us as we move into another week. Let the knowledge of Your faithfulness to remember each of us fill our hearts with an assurance of Your love. When we feel alone and abandoned, remind us that You will never leave us or forsake us. Help us to keep our eyes firmly fixed on You as we live our life each day. The eagle will fly to some high spot and wait for the winds to come. When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it high above the storm. While the storm rages below, the eagle is soaring high above it, gliding with ease. The eagle does not escape the storm, it just simply uses the storm to lift it higher. It rises on the winds that bring the storm into its world. When the storms of life come upon us - and all of us will experience them - we can rise above them by setting our minds and belief toward God!!! The storms do not have to overcome us. We can allow God to lift us above them. God enables us to ride the winds of the storm that brings sickness, pain, tragedy, failure and disappointments in our lives, and make something good come from it. We can soar above the storm. Remember, it is not the burdens of life which weigh us down, but it is how we handle them that counts. "But they that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." As she settled into her seat, Marge noticed a strange phenomenon. On one side of the airplane a sunset suffused the entire sky with glorious color. But out of the window next to her seat, all Marge could see was a dark and threatening sky, with no sign of the sunset. As the plane's engines began to roar, a gentle Voice spoke within her. "You have noticed the windows," He murmured beneath the roar and thrust of the takeoff. "Your life, too, will contain some happy, beautiful times, but also some dark shadows. Here's a lesson I want to teach you to save you much heartache and allow you to "abide in Me" with continual peace and joy. You see, it doesn't matter which window you look through; this plane is still going to Cleveland. So it is in your life. You have a choice. You can dwell on the gloomy picture. Or you can focus on the bright things and leave the dark, ominous situations to Me. I alone can handle them anyway. And the final destination is not influenced by what you see or feel along the way. Learn this, act on it and you will be released, able to experience the "peace that passes understanding." ________________________________________________ Copyright © 1998-2001 by Stephen J. A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then as ked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous 'yes.' The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. 'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car. The sand is everything else---the small stuff. 'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you. 'Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Spend time with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.' One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.' The coffee just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.' We want to encourage a child to do her homework, or a spouse to complete his project, or a colleague to complain less and act more. How can we encourage without criticizing, berating or pushing too hard? Here are three techniques that can help you nudge without nagging. * Show appreciation. Novelist Arnold Bennett had a publisher who boasted about the extraordinary efficiency of his secretary. One day while visiting the publisher's office, Bennett asked her: "Your boss claims you're extremely efficient. What's your secret?" "It's not my secret," said the assistant, "it's his." She went on to tell him that her boss always acknowledged and appreciated everything she did, regardless how insignificant. That was why she worked so hard for him. Her boss' appreciation nudged her toward constant improvement. * If possible, keep it light-hearted. The careful use of humor can work in any relationship where nudging may be required. One wife used it effectively when she found herself on the verge of nagging her husband to repair the lawn mower. He had promised to fix it, but the grass grew ever taller while he procrastinated. Then one day he came home and found her seated on the ground snipping grass with sewing scissors, one blade at a time. He watched in amazement and then went into the house. When he returned, he handed her a toothbrush. "Honey," he said, "when you finish cutting the grass would you mind sweeping the sidewalks?" They both laughed. And, more importantly, the mower was fixed. * Be polite and respectful. Sometimes it's more about how you say it than what you say. People respond best when they are respected and valued. Elizabeth Harrison stated, "Those who are lifting the world upward and onward are those who encourage more than criticize." Try these simple techniques next time you want to nudge without nagging. ~ Steve Goodier ~ -<>- .----. ===(_)== THIS WONT HURT A BIT... // 6 6 \\ / ( 7 ) \ '--' / \_ ._/ __) (__ /"`/`\`V/`\`\ / \ `Y _/_ \ / [DR]\_ |/ / /\ | ( \/ / / / \ \ \ / \ `-/` _.` jgs `=. `=./ `"` >No Future In The Past The man looked a little worried when the doctor came in to administer his annual physical, so the first thing the doctor did was to ask whether anything was troubling him. "Well, to tell the truth, Doc, yes," answered the patient. "You see, I seem to be getting forgetful. No, it's actually worse than that. I can never remember where I park my car, where I'm going, or what it is I'm going to do once I get there -- if I get there. So, I really need your help. What can I do?" The doctor mused for a moment, then answered kindly, "Pay me in advance." Actually, forgetfulness isn't all bad...especially when we decide to forget all that pain from the past that threatens to ruin the present. Like one song says, "There ain't no future in the past." The past is to be remembered -- how else will we learn from it and keep from repeating it? But why would I want to remember every time I felt hurt because of my spouse, my children, my friends, my boss or anybody else? Why would I want to fill my mind with a detailed catalogue of past pain? Better to remember the times they brought me joy or love or feelings of warmth. Unfortunately, even those wonderful and magical moments too easily fade away. A friend of Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, asked her about a particular traumatic event in her life. Miss Barton seemed perplexed. "Can't you remember?" the friend prodded. Clara Barton replied, "I distinctly remember forgetting it." Dwell on the past -- but not the negative past, not the pain of the past nor the sadness. Dwell on the good. Be consumed by past joys and obsessed with gratitude. Dwell upon the moments that uplifted you, the times you laughed and the memories of love shown to you by friends and family. Not everything should be remembered, and those who live well know what to forget and what to cherish. Like the song says, "There ain't no future in the past." But there IS joy there. And love. And kindness...if we choose to remember. ~ Steve Goodier ~ -<>- Links for Your Enjoyment I Can't See Me Loving Nobody But You http://www.buffalosjokes.com/062701.htm Don't Eat My Food http://www.buffalosjokes.com/062702.htm Take My Breath Away http://www.buffalosjokes.com/062703.htm Pool http://www.buffalosjokes.com/062704.htm Take The Sword http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/poems/sword.html Fountain Of Youth http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/BibleStudy/fountainofyouth.html optical illusions http://www.snackaday.com/2007/12/24/can-you-find-optical-illusions- nice-pictures/ 15 Online Tools That You Will Come To Love As A Tech http://www.emergingtechs.com/posts/15-online-tools-you-will-come-love-tech To Subscribe send a blank email to: the-inspired-buffalo-subscribe@yahoogroups.com ==================================================================== >-->Dog retrieves his best friend - a cat buried in the garden .--. .---. /:. When Oscar’s owners woke up the next morning they discovered the dog curled up beside Arthur, the late cat, in his basket. His owners, Robert Bell, 73, and his wife, Mavis, of Wigan, Greater Manchester, believe that the dog had licked the cat clean before falling asleep. Mr Bell said that the two pets were constant companions. Arthur, who was a large cat, used to help Oscar to climb on to the sofa. Oscar, an 18-month-old Lancashire Heeler, had watched Mr Bell dig a grave in the garden and then lower the cat into the hole.Mr Bell said: “He had managed to climb out through the cat flap in the night, obviously with the intent to get Arthur back. Bearing in mind that Arthur was a huge cat, Oscar must have used all the strength he could muster. “Then he pulled him into the basket and went to sleep next to him. Arthur’s coat was gleaming white. Oscar had obviously licked him clean. It must have taken him nearly all night.” Arthur is now reburied in a secure grave. And Oscar has a new playmate, a kitten called Limpet. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article3162659.ece ====================================================================== >-->From SermondFodder: >The World's Largest Weathervane By Rob Chaffart When I heard that Whitehorse, Yukon is home to the world's largest weathervane, I knew I would have to be sure to visit it. But when we drove by the airport where it was located, I couldn't immediately spot it! I was very disappointed. How could I have missed something that was supposedly soooo big? Only after I was informed of its exact location did I realize why I missed it the first time. I had been looking for a weathervane. I never expected that the weathervane was a DC3, a Douglas plane serial No. 4665! With a length of 64 feet 5.5 inches and a wingspan of 95 feet, this plane swivels around at the top of a pedestal, always faithfully pointing into the wind. No wonder it is the largest weathervane in the world! Would you like to have this kind of a weathervane atop your roof? This particular DC3 hasn't always been a weathervane, however. It was build in August 1942, during World War II, and its first mission, under the disguise of camouflage, was to transport goods into India and China. After the war it was acquired by the Canadian authorities and issued registration "CF-CPY". It flew many routes throughout Canada, especially in the Yukon. With a total flying time of 31,581 hours, it can certainly be said that it served its country well! The CF-CPY's usefulness appeared to end however, one fateful day in November 1970, when it crashed. It wasn't until seven years later that the Yukon Flying Club undertook the task of restoring the plane, and after 4 years of work, it is now mounted on its pedestal to forever show the citizens of Whitehorse what direction the wind is blowing. It would seem that despite the crash, the usefulness of this particular DC3 carries on! . .::. ::::. '::::. ':: - Wonderlamp - it's up to YOU! .::' {} _, ___/__\_// (_\_ _/ -' `)(` jgs ~""~ Reflecting on this, I realize that once someone retires from active duty, the "golden years" sometimes turn out to be stale and lifeless. But they don't have to be! One's usefulness is only over when we let it be over! I know of a lady who had dreamed her entire life of becoming a missionary to China. She was never able to fulfill her dream until after she had retired! She then went through the training, applied to the missions board, and began serving in China. Just before this lady left the western world, she was diagnosed with cancer. This didn't stop her, however. To her it didn't matter where you died, as long as you were in the will of the Lord when you did! I heard of another elderly gentleman who was dying in his hospital bed. Most would think that his usefulness was completely used up, but one night he took the time to talk about Jesus with a fellow patient. He was able to lead this roommate to the Lord, and his dying words were, "Another one out of the grasp of Satan!" On the other hand, I know of young people who could care less if they were useful in life or not. If they could have their own way, they would lie on the coach and watch T.V. 24/7! So as you can see, one's usefulness is not restricted by age. Rather it is lack of determination and willingness that restricts usefulness! But God tells us: "They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, 'The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.'" (Ps 92:14-15 NIV) What are you plans when you retire? Doesn't that pedestal look attractive?
