We usually saved this special outing for the Saturday before Halloween. If memory serves me correctly, each year the weather cooperated with sunny skies and fairly warm temperatures. Some years the crisp, cool air of autumn gave us reason to wrap sweaters around our waists, just in case. It was quite a long ride out to the pumpkin patch. The girls would get anxious repeating a familiar phrase, "Are we there yet?" Outside the city and a ways past the suburbs we'd drive until we were out in the country and there we'd find the spectacular farm all decorated for the harvest season. Huge scarecrows could be seen everywhere, greeting young and old alike. A barn converted into a craft store for the occasion had all you could want for the fall festivities. Caramel apples covered in peanuts to sink your teeth into, cider to sip, and popcorn balls to crunch. No trip to the pumpkin patch would be complete without a good old fashioned hay ride. The farmer's tractor pulled the long, wooden seated vehicle out into the middle of the patch as the children sang songs. The ride was bumpy, the songs were severely off key, but the giggle of happy children always made for a joyful ride. When we reached our destination the kids were instructed to only pick a pumpkin they were able to carry. Of course it never failed -- Bill and I would each be lugging an oversized Jack-O-Lantern back to where the tractor waited. I fondly remember all the fun on a far away piece of farmland where the weather signaled the end of summer and the beginning of frost filled nights. The other day Bill and I took a ride that found us passing the same place we picked pumpkins with the kids. Sadly, we witnessed its demise with no signs of the traditional Halloween happenings. Apparently the farmland has been gone for a long time. It is now a sub-division with clusters of homes scattered all around the area. The only trace of hay, apple cider and friendly faced scarecrows to welcome us are in the memories of two aging parents and their now grown daughters. These days we purchase our pumpkins at the local grocery store. Lately we have resorted to painting on smiling faces instead of carving them. They are quite a bit smaller than the gargantuan gourds our children used to choose. Autumn is a special time of caring and sharing. It's a time to be thankful for the harvest that we reap, both nutritional and spiritual. In the harvest of our lives I am grateful for the bounty of love and memories that are mine to forever cherish. -- Kathy Whirity ___________________________________________ Kathy lives in Chicago where she shares her life and love with her husband of 29 years, Bill, their two daughters, Jaime and Katie, and two rambunctious retrievers, Holly and Hannah. The dreaded, "worst Halloween treat ever" – is clearly a matter of natural selection. The candy that takes up residence at the bottom of your bag (while appreciated) is the worst Halloween Treat and will likely be re-gifted next year. Here are the top 11 worst Halloween treats: 11. Coins `Coins aren't candy', you say. I know! On Halloween, you don't dress up and walk 10 miles (or a few blocks) for dirty change. Coins don't give you a sugar rush; they don't melt in your mouth or stain your tongue blue. By these criteria: coins are absolutely the worst Halloween candy ever. 10. Mary Janes Sorry, retro candy lovers. I love peanut butter and I love molasses, but together there's no magic. No surprises, no contrast of flavors or textures, except of course when the wax paper clings to the candy. 9. Candy Corn Sure, some delusional people believe candy corn is tasty. It's alright. Candy corn is not on this list because of its waxy texture, it's here because many parents won't let their kids eat unwrapped Halloween candy. What good is free candy if you're not allowed to enjoy it? This is a trick more than a treat. 8. Candy Buttons on Paper Scrape off colorful droplets of icing from long rolls of paper with your teeth and then explain why this is a good idea. And how does that soggy, stained paper manage to always avoid the trash can? 7. Necco Wafers Do children really eat these slivers of grainy sugar? You get about 50 in a single package and they come in different colors, but so do crayons and I'm not eating those. 6. Random Hard Candies with Gooey Insides One day, long ago, there was a candy maker who made millions of hard candies shaped like strawberries and root beer barrels. Then he went into the sky in his hot air balloon and sprinkled these candies all over the world. Nobody knows what to do with these. I suspect the candy man stopped making these years ago and the same hard candies get recycled into the Halloween bowl every year. Stop this madness! 5. Circus Peanuts Bits of circus peanuts over cereal may have inspired the creation of Lucky Charms cereal, but circus peanuts themselves are disappointing. There is a charm to their mysterious appearance in every Halloween candy bag for the past two-hundred years, but must they taste like bland Styrofoam? 4. Dubble Bubble Rock hard plain gum is never ever yum. I'll be happy to demonstrate why: give me an hour to break my teeth chewing it only to blow a pitiful puff of a `bubble'. 3. Bit-o-Honey If you manage to pry this sticky, honey-flavored taffy from the 50-year old wrapper, you're rewarded with a mouthful of stubborn pieces stuck to your teeth all night. 2. Mini Tooth Brush Adults may appreciate the thoughtfulness, but kids feel jipped when they get mini tooth brushes for Halloween. I have never heard a single child shout, "Hooray! I can clean my teeth with this brand new mini tooth brush. And it's mine. All mine. Ha ha ha [evil and joyful laugh]." And the number 1 all time worst Halloween Treat..... 1. Rasins In or out of those little boxes, this one is Self Explanatory. Your neighbors don't have to open their doors and offer anything on Halloween. In the spirit of dressing up and getting free candy: smile and thank them, even if they drop a rotten apple in your bag. ==================== _|_ | / \ //_\\ //(_)\\ |/^\| ,%%%% // \\ ,@@@@@@@, ,%%%%/%%% // \\ ,@@@\@@@@/@@, @@@%%%\%%//%%%// === \\ @@\@@@/@@@@@ @@@@%%%%\%%%%%// =-=-= \\@@@@\@@@@@@;%#####, @@@@%%%\%%/%%// === \\@@@@@@/@@@%%%######, @@@@@%%%%/%%//| |\\@\\//@@%%%%%%#/#### '@@@@@%%\\/%~ | | ~ @|| %\\//%%%#####; @@\\//@|| | __ __ | || %%||%%'###### '@|| || | | | | | || ||##\//#### || || | | -|- | | || ||'#||###' || || |_|__|__|_| || || || || ||_/` ======= `\__||_._|| || jgs__||_/` ======= `\_||___ >10 Lessons Learned From 25 Years of Ministry By Rev. Bill Shuler The following are 10 lessons I've learned in 25 years of ministry: 1. The goal is not to win a debate but to redeem the heart. 2. One's public witness is only as authentic as one's private integrity. 3. There is no greater source of wisdom than the Bible and no investment that yields greater returns than prayer. 4. Hate is only validated when one responds in like spirit. 5. Jesus should never be presented as less than he claimed to be: the way, the truth and the life. 6. One should live first and foremost so as to please a heavenly audience. 7. One's legacy is found not in things that matter least but in people who matter most. 8. The generation into which I am born is my calling and it beckons me to be fully engaged. 9. When Jesus paused while dying on the cross to make certain his mother was cared for, he showed how to prioritize family amidst ministry. 10. Sermons can inspire but it is love in action that makes the most profound impact. As I look to the next generation of ministers I am keenly aware that they will seek to touch a world that is increasingly distracted. Absolutes will be challenged as those who oppose Biblical precepts become more organized and vocal. Their strength will be in presenting not religion but a relationship with Jesus Christ. To the generation of ministers who have served before me that includes Billy Graham, Bill Bright and others less well-known but equally faithful I owe a debt of gratitude. === Rev. It's been said that God first separated the salt water from the fresh, made dry land, planted a garden, made animals and fish... All before making a human. He made and provided what we'd need before we were born. These are best & more powerful when eaten raw. We're such slow learners... God left us a great clue as to what foods help what part of our body! >God's Pharmacy! Amazing! A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye... And YES, science now shows carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes. A Tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart has four chambers and is red. All of the research shows tomatoes are loaded with lycopine and are indeed pure heart and blood food. Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food. A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds on the nut are just like the neo-cortex. We now know walnuts help develop more than three Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys. Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and many more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don't have enough sodium in your diet, the body pulls it from the bones, thus making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body. Avocados, Eggplant and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female - they look just like these organs. Today's research shows that when a woman eats one avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight, and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? It takes exactly nine (9) months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods. Modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them. Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the mobility of male sperm and increase the numbers of Sperm as well to overcome male sterility. Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics. Oranges, Grapefruits, and other Citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts. Onions look like the body's cells. Today's research shows onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells. They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes. A working companion, Garlic, also helps eliminate waste materials and dangerous free radicals from the body. --- ...Great info! (CBS) Mechanic and good Samaritan Thomas Weller patrols the highways of San Diego rescuing people in need. It's a pattern of kindness he started 40 years ago. Steve Hartman reports. | Share/Embed (CBS) Thomas Weller has two gardens - one in his backyard, where he grows morning glories and other plants - and one on the highway, where he sows the seeds of kindness, CBS News correspondent Steve Hartman reports. "There's too much anger and distrust and fear out there. I'd like the world to be a better place," Weller said. To that end, Weller patrols the highways of San Diego in his Ghostbuster-inspired rescue vehicle - rescuing people like Mr. Frazzled and Ms. Frustrated here. The couple was overheated - as was their car. "It don't look good," Weller said. "Not good," the woman in the car said. Fortunately, this was their lucky day. A mechanic by trade, Weller is prepared for just about any roadside emergency. "This is way better than AAA," one woman he helped said. He helped one couple, first to find their spare tire - then change it. "I never would have figured out you unscrew it!" the driver Weller helped said. Of course, eventually, people will ask him, "Why are you doing this?" To which Weller responds without saying a word. "He gave me a card," one woman said. "It says, 'Assisting you has been my pleasure. I ask no payment other than for you to pass on the favor by helping someone in distress that you may encounter.'" It's the same message Weller first heard 40 years earlier almost word-for-word, after he plowed his car into an Illinois snow bank. "I probably would have froze there if this fellow hadn't stopped to help me," he said. Since then, Weller has paid the favor forward more than 5,000 times. After one stop to help a man change his tire, Hartman asked Weller: "He's a strapping young man. He could have changed his own tire." "Sure he could have - but then I wouldn't of had the fun of doing it for him," Weller said. Weller says it's a great feeling. Of course, on rare occasion, some other good Samaritan will beat him to the punch. In fact, that happened not long ago - and Weller actually asked the do-gooder why he stopped to help the stranger. "He said four months earlier his wife had had a blow out on the freeway - and somebody stopped to help her," Weller said. "And he said, 'By the way, thank you for doing that for my wife.'" Obviously, somebody had read his card. "So you saw it all come full-circle," Hartman asked. "That's my garden growing," Weller said. And who knows how many other offshoots have come from this devoted gardener, who plants seeds of good deeds in the fallow field of the American freeway. © MMVIII, CBS Interactive Inc. It's not a big choice -- it's just a very small, seemingly insignificant choice -- yet the consequences of that choice can be enormous. The choice you have, the question you must answer, is this. How will you spend this moment? It's not really a matter of choosing between what is easy and what is difficult. Even the most difficult objective can be broken down into easily achievable steps. It's not a matter of choosing between what is simple and what is complex. Even the most complex of ambitions can be broken down into small, simple tasks. Your choice for how to spend this moment, and the moments that follow, comes down to a matter of what is truly important to you. Upon what do you wish to focus the power of your attention, your commitment, your energy, your thoughts, your efforts and your time? This moment will pass quickly, regardless of what you do with it. You can choose to use it to the fullest and move yourself forward, or you can choose to just stand still and let it go by. The extra effort, the extra energy required to make the most of this brief moment is so small as to not even be noticed. Yet when you put forth that effort, when you make use of this moment, and the moment that follows it, and the moments that follow that, the results can be truly astounding. Times were hard. He could not find a job, although some questioned how seriously he was looking. He decided to go into the fish business. After his first catch, he set up shop underneath a sign he made: "Fresh Fish For Sale Today!" The first passerby offered a criticism: "Why would you use the word Today? Everyone knows you don't want to sell them yesterday or tomorrow. That leaves only today to sell them." So he sawed off that last word and mounted the new version: "Fresh Fish For Sale." The next passerby asked, "Why use the word Fresh? Do you mean to imply that at other times the fish are not fresh?" Again he changed his sign. Now it said, "Fish For Sale." The next critic said, "Why not leave off the words For Sale? Any numbskull would know that's why you have a fish market?" Finally, he wound up with only the word "Fish." Even then, he still had a critic! The next passerby said, "Why do you need to put up a sign at all? Anyone who comes within half a mile of this place knows from the smell what you are selling!" Mazzella I have a blind friend who lives in New York City. Although we have never met face to face, we still write each other frequently. She is a remarkable lady and has become like a sister to me. Her optimistic and enthusiastic letters always lift my spirits and the inspiring poems she shares with the world always bring a smile to my face. She is all the more amazing due to the fact that she lost her sight halfway through her life. She had to give up her career and relearn to do everything that most of us take for granted. Many would have given up after such a loss but not her. Instead she embarked on a glorious new life full of award winning volunteer work. Her days are full of teaching English to new immigrants, counseling hurting hearts, writing, serving her religious community, and helping others in every way she can. The light of my friend’s example is a beacon that I try to follow as well. Whenever I feel too challenged in my own life I look at the challenges that she has overcome in hers. She may have lost her sight but she never lost her soul. She knows that the eyes that really see are the eyes of the heart, and she does her best everyday to follow the loving vision that they give to her. I am sure too that the eyes of the angels watching over her are always filled with tears of joy and that their faces are always full of shining smiles. I hope then that when you go through your own life you are not distracted by the murky view that this world so often gives you. I hope that you see it for the illusion it is and instead look at life with the clear vision of your heart’s eyes. God wants us to see this world and our lives through the eyes of love. It is only then that our sight will be pure. It is only then that our path will shine brightly before us. It is only then that we will see how we were meant to live and how we can best bring Heaven to Earth. -<>- \\ ///// | | (| _ _ |) |` | '| | __ | >>>___/\_^__/\___<<< / ||| \ Mike Hertz >Right Attitudes Change Everything Waylon B. Moore Nick Herman started his first career in the army and later got a position as a dishwasher. It turned out to be the only job he would keep for many years of his life. Washing dishes for 14 hours a day, the ho-hum of pots and pans, he endured the noise of shouting cooks and being the least important of all the workers. Then Nick made a decision, an attitude change. He chose to bring God into the kitchen! He began to wash dishes as a way to show love for the Lord. Everything changed. Nick said, “We ought not to be weary of doing little things for the love of God, who regards not the greatness of the work, but the love with which it is performed… All things are possible to him that believes.” Nick worked 62 years serving others as a lay Carmelite monk in France, and died quietly at age 80. A young lady confidently walked around the room while leading and explaining stress management to an audience with a raised glass of water. Everyone knew she was going to ask the ultimate question, 'half empty or half full?'... She fooled them all .... "How heavy is this glass of water?" she inquired with a smile. Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. To 20 oz. She replied , "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance. In each case it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes." She continued, "and that's the way it is with stress. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on." "As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden - holding stress longer and better each time practiced. So, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don't carry them through the evening and into the night... Pick them up tomorrow. 1 * Accept the fact that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue! 2 * Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. 3 * Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it. 4 * Drive carefully... It's not only cars that can be recalled by their Maker. 5 * If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague. 6 * If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it. 7 * It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others. 8 * Never buy a car you can't push. 9 * Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won't have a leg to stand on. 10 * Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance. 11 * Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late. 12 * The second mouse gets the cheese. 13 * When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane. 14 * Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live. 16 * Some mistakes are too much fun to make only once. 17 * We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box. 18 * A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour. 19 * Have an awesome day and know that someone has thought about you today. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY 20 *Save the earth..... It's the only planet with chocolate!* Be the kind of person that when your feet hit the floor each morning the devil says~~ "Oh Crap, They're up!" ================================================================== ,-. ,.---'''^\ O { \ ,__\,---'''''`-., O O I \ K`,'^ _ `'. o \ ,.J..-'` // (O) ,,X, o / (_ (( ~ ,;:''` o / ,.X'., \\ ':;;;: (_../ -._ ,'` K.=,;.__ /^~/___..'` / /` ~~~ Zeus >-->Just Come Back Later Story Editor: by Guy Slater Joyce Schowalter Tennessee, USA My wife and I moved to the Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee in November of 2005, from a large metropolitan area to a very rural area. While moving we had the help of our adult daughter and our 2-year-old granddaughter. During the hectic days of moving into our new home, we ate out in the local community a lot. One evening we decided to have dinner at "Cindy's Catfish Kitchen." Cindy's is a buffet style restaurant, all you can eat. It had been a long day of moving boxes and furniture, and tomorrow would see us on the long drive back to our former home for another load, a thousand mile long trip. We were all tired, and our granddaughter was cranky to top it all off. But the buffet was great, and we ended our meal feeling rested and relaxed. When I went to pay our bill, card in hand, the waitress cashier told me that Cindy's didn't have the ability to take either credit or debit cards. Being from the "big city," using a credit or debit card was the norm. Oops! I had no cash in my pocket, but about 10 miles back down the road I'd seen a bank with an ATM. I told the lady that I would leave my family there and return in a few minutes to pay for our meals. "Oh, y'all don't have to do that," she told me. "You just come back some time and pay us then." WHAT!? These people had never seen me before, did not know if I would ever return, yet they trusted me to return to pay for three adult meals? This is not something that I had ever encountered in the big city, that's for sure. We have lived here for almost six years, and every single week I see other acts of trust like this happening. It may be a "country" thing, or just plain Southern hospitality. Whatever it is, I certainly like it, and I pass on this kindness every chance I get. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: .--. .--. | = o\ | = o\ \= =_/ \= =_/ )= \____ )= \____ ; = _|__-\ ; = _|__-\ |= ----.\ |= ----.\ ('.==| ('.==| / \=\=\ / \=\=\ _.' /=/\=\_ _.' /=/\=\_ _jgs_..-' /__) \__)__..-' /__) \__) >THE FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY Tara, 3, asked her mother, Gwen, what she was going to be for Halloween. "I don't think I'm going to dress up for Halloween this year," Gwen said. "What!" Tara exclaimed, "you're going to go naked!" On Halloween night the family's large dog was overly friendly, so when the man of the house answered the door, he told the dog in a booming voice, "SIT!" Immediately the two little trick-or-treaters sat down on his porch! Grandma Shirley ("Mimi") asked Tyler, 4, what he was going to be for Halloween. "A human candy bar!" Tyler quickly replied. Mimi started to tease him. She said she would stop by his house on Halloween night and eat his ears. Tyler became very serious and said, "No, Mimi, you can't eat my ears because I won't be able to hear." Then Mimi said she would have to eat his nose. "No, Mimi, I won't be able to smell!" They continued back and forth as Mimi opted for hands, feet, etc. until Tyler threw his hands up in the air and said, "JUST FORGET THE WHOLE THING. Melissa said the picture had a ghost, witch, spider and bats and the ghost was saying, "B-Zero-Zero!" "Mom, what does B-Zero-Zero spell?" Melissa asked. Jane explained the ghost was saying "BOO!" Logan, 2, kept trying on one Halloween costume after another. His reaction was always the same. "I don't want to be a pirate," he told his mother. "I don't want to be a scarecrow. I don't want to be a lion..." Finally his mother asked him, "What do you want to be?" He looked at her as if she were crazy and said, "Logan!" Zachie, 5, Diane's great nephew, was very excited about Halloween. Diane asked him what he wanted to be. "I want to be a cowboy and my little brother will be the cow!" he said. .--. /`-'/ .----,_| (__ { ="""`/`""`__ `'-. /`---'`_\ /_ ' \ | ' / \ / \ ' | | . / _| | _\ . | | \(o/ \(o/ | | ,__) /\ (__, | / |\ \/ /| \ | | '._ _.' | | | \ `|_| / | | ' `\ /` ' | | . \-.--/ . | \ . He interjected and said, "Aunt Lynne I am NOT a pumpkin; I don't even live in a patch!" A couple of days before Halloween, Bret, 5, was outside with his sister Erin, 3. There was a bumble bee buzzing around the plants on the porch. "Look, a bumble bee!" Erin said. Bret replied, "That's not a bumble bee. That is a fly in a costume!" Donna was doing dishes when she heard Jayce, 6, approach the door. All of a sudden he said, "Oh, my God!" Donna leaned towards the window and said, "Jayce, don't say that!" He replied, "But, Grandma, there's a HUGE spider on the deck!" Donna told him to kill it with his shoe. Ethics is not for wimps. It’s not easy being a good person. It’s not easy to be honest when it might be costly, to play fair when others cheat, or to keep promises that are inconvenient. It’s not easy to stand up for our beliefs and still respect differing viewpoints. It’s not easy to control powerful impulses, to be accountable for our attitudes and actions, to tackle unpleasant tasks, or to sacrifice the now for later. It’s not easy to bear criticism and learn from it without getting angry, to take advice, or to admit error. It’s not easy to feel genuine remorse and apologize sincerely or to accept an apology graciously and truly forgive. It’s not easy to stop feeling like a victim, to resist cynicism, or to make the best of every situation. It’s not easy to be consistently kind, to think of others first, to judge generously, or to give the benefit of the doubt. It’s not easy to be grateful or to give without concern for reward or gratitude. It’s not easy to fail and still keep trying, to learn from failure, to risk failing again, to start over, to lose with grace, or to be glad of another’s success. It’s not easy to look at ourselves honestly and be accountable, to avoid excuses and rationalizations, or to resist temptations. No, being a person of character is not easy. That’s why it’s such a lofty goal and an admirable achievement. - Michael Josephson .:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:. ___ \--/ .' `"-._ Since this is the time /`-' '-`\ / , `'-_.-. for goblins and bats, / \ / /`'. ,' _ | /.'|/\ /\|'.\ `-' `-. ,' ,'\\/ \/ \, ,' ee`-.
