After she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, "But Grandma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!" _____________________ My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, 62. My grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?" _____________________ After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. Finally, she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, "Who was THAT?" _____________________ A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like. "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire. It hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this all in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!" _____________________ My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo and I said, "No, how are we alike?'' "You're both old," he replied. _____________________ A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather's word processor. She told him she was writing a story. "What's it about?" he asked. "I don't know," she replied. "I can't read." _____________________ I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door, saying, "Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these colors yourself!" _____________________ When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use Grandpa. Now the mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights.." _____________________ When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, "I'm not sure." "Look in your underwear, Grandpa," he advised. "Mine says I'm 4 to 6." _____________________ A second grader came home from school and said to her grandmother, "Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today." The grandmother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool. "That's interesting." she said. "How do you make babies?" "It's simple," replied the girl. "You just change 'y' to 'i' and add 'es'." _____________________ Children's Logic: "Give me a sentence about a public servant," said a teacher. The small boy wrote: "The fireman came down the ladder pregnant." The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. "Don't you know what pregnant means?" she asked. "Sure," said the young boy confidently. "It means carrying a child." _____________________ A grandfather was delivering his grandchildren to their home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog's duties. "They use him to keep crowds back," said one child. "No," said another. "He's just for good luck." A third child brought the argument to a close. "They use the dogs," she said firmly, "to find the fire hydrants." _____________________ A 6-year-old was asked where his grandma lived. "Oh," he said, "she lives at the airport, and when we want her, we just go get her. Then, when we're done, we take her back to the airport." =========================================================== ''' .-~~~~~~~~~-._ _.-~~~~~~~~~-. __.' ~. .~ `.__ .'// \./ \\`. .'// | \\`. .'// .-~"""""""~~~~-._ | _,-~~~~"""""""~-. \\`. I have cerebral palsy and fibromyalgia, and use a power wheelchair to get around. On my way home from the walk one Sunday in November 2002, my chair's power was low, but I thought it was OK. I rolled on homewards. Five blocks from home, my chair gave out. I tried turning it off for a few minutes, but when I tried moving again it rolled only a few feet before stopping. I got out of the chair, flicked the switch and put it into manual. Though I used to walk, nowadays my muscles are just too worn out. But I managed to push the heavy chair one block. Except for the fact that there was a curb ramp on a hilly street, I'd have made it home. I struggled with it, and finally gave up and moved the chair back to the curb. I was about to abandon it and crawl the four blocks home, when a fellow approached me on foot. His name was Robert, and he'd just walked six miles to visit a friend. He said he'd try to assist. We walked the chair across the street together, then halfway up the block my legs gave out. Robert told me to get in, and proceeded to slowly push me up the block. When he said he couldn't do it anymore, he tried hailing several cars to help us. A guy in an SUV came to our aid and drove me the three blocks while Robert pushed the chair home. I was so very grateful to Robert, and offered him some water. He used my phone to call his girlfriend to come pick him up. The next few days I was completely sore in my legs, and hoped Robert wasn't equally sore. I was extremely lucky to have had his help that night. The next Saturday, I was rescued again! My assistant Lace and I were out for an afternoon walk. We hit the wrong angle at a curb cut, causing the chair to hit her in the shin. She accidentally pushed the joystick the wrong way and broke it, leaving us unable to move the chair. A woman named Celia pushing her baby girl in a carriage very kindly went home and got her cell phone. The motorized chair's phone numbers didn't work. So Celia called her husband, Nick, who brought their car and took Lace and me home, while Celia stayed to guard my chair. Lace phoned my case manager, and he and his girlfriend relieved Celia and brought my chair home. Robert, the man in the SUV, Celia and her husband Nick, my facilitator and his girlfriend *all* took time out of their lives to help me. They won't win a Purple Heart — but because they rescued me when I really needed help, they will always hold top honors in my memory. Tamar Raine -<>- >Freedom From Fear When I was young, fear was a strong influence on many aspects of my life. I've since come to understand that many people go through this, and that as a part of our development we learn how to overcome everyday fears. But it took me a long time, and I needed the help of another person. In my junior year of college in Boston, I adopted a cat. It wasn't a well thought out idea -- especially since I lived in a school dormitory! Fortunately I had a single room, and Neebo, as I called her, was perfectly happy there. She would acknowledge and greet visitors, but was utterly devoted to me. Just having her sit on my lap and purr as I petted her was soothing. As I graduated and moved on to New York, Neebo went with me. She never complained, was always waiting for me when I came home, and came whenever called her. When times were tough we shared ham sandwiches until I could afford cat food. In the mid-80s I decided to go abroad for a year to work in Japan. I arranged for Neebo to stay with an old friend in Brooklyn. About three months after I arrived in Tokyo I got a phone call from my friend: Neebo was not taking this change well. She took every opportunity to escape, wasn't eating, and seemed quite disturbed. I had decided to stay in Japan for a while, so we made arrangements to ship her to me. She arrived, and after a few days we quickly resumed our life together. After a couple years I noticed Neebo licking a sore on her abdomen. As months went by, the sore became an ugly wound. I avoided taking her to the veterinarian because, what if she had something serious or terminal? I dreaded losing her more than anything else at the time. One day my good friend, Kathy, noticed Neebo licking her wound. "Andrew" she said "I think it would be a good idea if you took Neebo to the vet and had that checked out." She didn't scold me or point out that I was endangering my beloved cat, she just told me what I ought to do. And so I did. Neebo did not live much longer. The vet told me her form of cancer was fatal even before symptoms arose, which slightly assuaged my guilt. Kathy and I are still friends, she and her husband in Washington, my wife and I in San Francisco. I often remind her of that day and what it did for me. 25 years later, I have never let fear stop me from doing something I know I have to do. That's the lesson I took from Kathy's words that day in Tokyo, and it has served me well time and time again. by Andrew Scal --- ...Sad but a good lesson. Thanks Fran! From a distance, each looks like every other horse. But if one stops the car, or is walking by, one will notice something quite amazing. Looking into the eyes of one horse will disclose that he is blind. His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made a good home for him. This alone is amazing. Listening, one will hear the sound of a bell. Looking around for the source of the sound, one will see that it comes from the smaller horse in the field. Attached to her bridle is a small bell. It lets her blind friend know where she is, so he can follow her. As one stands and watches these two friends, one sees how she is always checking on him, and that he will listen for her bell and then slowly walk to where she is -- trusting that she will not lead him astray. Like the owners of these two horses, God does not throw us away just because we are not perfect or because we have problems or challenges. He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need. Sometimes we are the blind horse being guided by God and those whom he places in our lives. Other times we are the guide horse, helping others see God. Prayer: Heavenly Father, who watches over even a blind old horse, thank you for watching over us and leading us to You. The people at home were eager to learn all about the vast and mighty river and the country surrounding it. How he wondered, could he ever describe it to them - how could he ever put into words the feelings that flooded into his heart when he saw the exotic flowers and heard the night sounds of the jungle. How could he communicate to them the smells the filled the air and the sense of danger and excitement that would come whenever he and his fellows explorers encountered strange animals or paddled through treacherous rapids? So the explorer did what all good explorers do - he said to the people, "go and find out for yourselves what it is like", and to help them he drew a map of the river pointing out the various features of its course and describing some of the dangers and some of the routes that could be used to avoid those dangers. The people took the map and they framed and hung it on the wall of the local science museum so that everyone could look at it. Some made copies of it. After a period of time many of those who made copies for themselves considered themselves experts on the river - and indeed they knew its every turn and bend, they knew how broad it was and how deep, where the rapids where and where the falls. They knew the river and they instructed others in what it was like whenever those people indicated an interest in it. I think that many people today are in the same situation. We know the scriptures but we do not understand them. And we do not understand them because we have not been there. We must not simply look at the scriptures and their meaning, we must go there. We must experience what it means to repent of our sins and allow God to forgive us. Would you this morning take the map down from the wall and go to the river with me. See what is there. Allow Christ to open your mind, to breath his Holy Spirit upon you, and make you a disciple from the heart. Mazzella When I was a teenager I was in a group of students who took a trip to Pittsburgh. Being a country boy, I found it exciting just being in such a big city. While most of the students headed for the mall then I decided to tour the streets alone. It was almost Christmastime and the store windows were filled with beautiful displays, full of joy and delight. I bought several cinnamon sticks to ward off the chill and spent a while just walking and looking at the sights. At some point, however, the stores became less and less and the bars became more and more. I realized I had crossed into a not so good section of town. I saw a small bus stop and decided to sit and take a rest before walking back. The bus stop was just in front of a grocery store and before long an old woman in a tattered coat came out. She was carrying two large bags in one hand. Her other hand held a cane that steadied her slow, shaky walk. Her young, dark haired granddaughter clutched her coat as they made their way to the bench. I smiled at them both and we joked and laughed for a bit about how cold it was before the bus pulled up. When it arrived I picked up the old lady’s bags and carried them up the steps. Then I helped her cherub faced granddaughter up them while her grandma slowly climbed on behind us. I pulled out my last cinnamon stick and gave it to the sweet girl while her grandma smiled her thanks to me. I got off the bus and looked up to the window where the little, curly-haired Child of God was waving goodbye to me. Then I started back to meet the other students a little warmer at heart if not in body. As I was turning the corner, though, a voice called out from an alley. "Hey man! Want to get high?" I smiled without looking over and said, "No thanks. I already am." No drug in the world can ever match the high that comes from one kind act, one shared laugh, one second of giving love, or one moment of making God smile. Kindness is Heaven’s high. -<>- !|| !|||| ,/|||| !|'''| `\ | )\ \ ejm / \ \ \ >God Our Father Dear God our Father, You see Your children growing up in an unsteady and confusing world. While moving we had the help of our adult daughter and our 2-year-old granddaughter. During the hectic days of moving into our new home, we ate out in the local community a lot. One evening we decided to have dinner at "Cindy's Catfish Kitchen." Cindy's is a buffet style restaurant, all you can eat. It had been a long day of moving boxes and furniture, and tomorrow would see us on the long drive back to our former home for another load, a thousand mile long trip. We were all tired, and our granddaughter was cranky to top it all off. But the buffet was great, and we ended our meal feeling rested and relaxed. When I went to pay our bill, card in hand, the waitress cashier told me that Cindy's didn't have the ability to take either credit or debit cards. Being from the "big city," using a credit or debit card was the norm. Oops! I had no cash in my pocket, but about 10 miles back down the road I'd seen a bank with an ATM. I told the lady that I would leave my family there and return in a few minutes to pay for our meals. "Oh, y'all don't have to do that," she told me. "You just come back some time and pay us then." WHAT!? These people had never seen me before, did not know if I would ever return, yet they trusted me to return to pay for three adult meals? This is not something that I had ever encountered in the big city, that's for sure. We have lived here for almost six years, and every single week I see other acts of trust like this happening. It may be a "country" thing, or just plain Southern hospitality. Whatever it is, I certainly like it, and I pass on this kindness every chance I get. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From LaughAndLift: "You and I, God's ambassadors, are called to sound the warning, to call sinners to repentance, to point the way to peace with God and the hope that is in Christ." - Billy Graham , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' >Look to Jesus (By Charles H. Spurgeon) [Edited] "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God." { Hebrews 12:2 } It is ever the holy spirit's work to turn our eyes away from self to Jesus; but Satan's work is just the opposite of this, for he is constantly trying to make us regard ourselves instead of Christ. He insinuates, "Your sins are too great for pardon; you have no faith; you do not repent enough; you will never be able to continue to the end; you have not the joy of God's children; you have such a wavering hold of Jesus." All these are thoughts about self, and we shall never find comfort or assurance by looking within. But the holy spirit turns our eyes entirely away from self: It tells us that we are nothing [in ourselves], but that "Christ is all in all." Remember, therefore, it is not [just] thy hold of Christ that saves thee-it is Christ; it is not thy joy in Christ that saves thee-it is Christ; it is not even faith in Christ, though that be the instrument-it is Christ's blood and merits; therefore, look not so much to thy hand with which thou art grasping Christ, as to Christ; look not to thy hope, but to Jesus, the source of thy hope; look not to thy faith, but to Jesus, the author and finisher of thy faith. We shall never find happiness by looking at our prayers, our doings, or our feelings; it is what Jesus is, not what we are, that gives rest to the soul. If we would at once overcome Satan and have peace with God, it must be by "looking unto Jesus." Keep thine eye simply on Him; let His death, His sufferings, His merits, His glories, His intercession, be fresh upon thy mind; when thou wakest in the morning look to Him; when thou liest down at night look to Him. Oh! let not thy hopes or fears come between thee and Jesus; follow hard after Him, and He will never fail thee. "My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness: I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus' name." -<>- "If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. (By Kirk Cameron) Shortly after speaking with Ray at a Christian Worldview Weekend seminar in Washington D.C., a few friends and I stopped at a diner to grab something to eat. It was 11:30 p.m. We were tired and hungry. Our day was done. As we sat down, I noticed that my friend Larry was no longer with us. I got concerned, so I searched the restaurant. No Larry. I went outside and found him a hundred yards away in the parking lot, witnessing to seven or eight very rough looking guys with pierced body parts and tattoos (they were assembling for a midnight drag race with their modified sports cars. Larry's no tough-guy. He looks like me. All by himself and in the dark, surrounded by cigarette sucking guys much bigger than him. My friend Mark Spence and I moved closer to the pack just in case they decided to pounce, when Larry dropped the "G" bomb. He did. Larry deliberately swung the conversation to the subject of God, their sin, and the fact that they could die at any moment and have to face the Judge of the Universe to give an account of their lives. Honestly, Larry looked like a lamb about to get eaten by a pack of wolves. Without flinching, he asked one guy named "Nate-Dog" if he had kept God's Ten Commandments. He hadn't. Larry then told the gang about the reality of Judgment Day and Hell. This attracted more teenagers and the pack of wolves got bigger. There were now 23 of them surrounding Larry the Lamb. One of the baddest looking guys in the bunch (named "Simon") had full arm tattoos, a giant circle disk inserted into his stretched out earlobe, and a black shirt with the face of Satan and the caption "God's busy... can I help you?" written on it. Finally, Larry told them of how God, 2000 years ago, demonstrated His love for them by sending his Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross and pay the price for their sin. I could see that Larry was in the "witnessing zone." As he continued to tell them about repentance and faith, fear had left him. He was running on adrenaline and his knowledge of how to share the gospel biblically, trusting the holy spirit to work through him. After forty five minutes, Larry was still standing. No slaughtering of the lamb. Just twenty three teenagers asking honest questions and listening to God's Word. I stayed back, not wanting any of them to notice "the guy from Growing Pains" and distract from what was happening. Every one of those young men took a gospel booklet called "Save Yourself Some Pain--Ten Steps for New and Growing Christians." We overheard one say to his friend, "I'll tell you one thing for sure--I'm reading this before I go to sleep tonight!" Another one prayed with Ray for God to reveal himself and help him understand the truth. As we drove to our hotel rooms at 3:00 a.m., we all agreed that we had witnessed something supernatural, and that if the average Christian had witnessed what we saw, it would completely fire them up and alter their view of sharing their faith. Alone in my hotel room, reflecting on the night's events, I remembered Simon's T-shirt with the face of Satan and the written words "God's busy... can I help you?" I couldn't help but think of how many professing Christians hardly ever share their faith. They are either too busy, too afraid, or not equipped to witness to someone. Meanwhile, Satan is always available, and extends his hand to the lost, 24/7. Think about it. If unbelievers feel that God and those who claim to know Him are too busy for them, no wonder they gravitate towards Satan's offer of the pleasures of premarital love making, illegal drugs, alcohol, and rebellion against God. Question: Is it okay for Christians to be so busy with legitimate acts of worship (like praying, Bible study, and serving at church functions) that we don't have time to seek and save those who are lost and on the brink of eternal Hell? When's the last time you went out as a sheep among wolves and shared your faith with a non-Christian? I made a new commitment that night--not only to love the Lord, but also to love the lost. So the next time you see someone who is not saved (a friend, a family member, or even a stranger) who is not saved, what message will you send them? "I'm too busy" or "Can I help you?" For the day that was his birthday they put a birthday cupcake on the calendar and told everyone it was going to be Nolan's birthday. Nolan said, "My birthday is in Nextember." -- Lisa Billingsley of Scaly Mountain, N.C. "Readers might enjoy a story about my first year of teaching which led to 33 more years in the classroom before I closed those doors," wrote Mrs. Parker. "My first class was a 3rd grade in Wichita, Kansas. Marlyn sat right in front of my teacher's desk. On the desk was a live green leafy plant. One day I came in to find that someone had torn a hole in one of the leaves. I proceeded to tell the class how disappointed I was that someone would tear a hole in a plant which was there for everyone's enjoyment. When I returned later in the day, Marlyn had put a piece of scotch tape over the hole. "Many years later, I was teaching first grade in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I had one little girl who nearly every day would throw her arms around my hips and say, "I don't know why I love you so much. I just do.' "Another year at that school I thought I would just die if I had to have a particular little boy in my class whom I knew from his bad behavior on the playground the two previous years. As luck would have it, he was on my class list. I thought I was going to be stuck with him the whole year. However, in the classroom he was a totally different child. He was my best helper and worked diligently in all subject areas. I guess he must have liked me, too, as whenever I was on the playground for my duty day, he would go around the playground chastising any of the boys who were being naughty. He would say, "You need to stop that. We should all be nice to Mrs. Parker.' It's surprising how much better the behavior on the playground improved that year as he was a very popular child. "From this experience, I learned not to judge children from how they behave on the playground, and he became my all time favorite student... Teaching is a wonderful profession, and I'm glad that I was able to spend 34 years having so much fun." , # _ (\\_(^> _. >(')__, (_(__) || _.||~~ {^--^}.-._._.---.__.-;(_~_/ || (^..^) || (\(__)/) || {6 6 }.')' Kaylea replied, "I can't. I'm busy." Another time, when her dad was driving the family car, Kaylea asked, "Daddy, why don't you let Mommy drive the car when you are in it?" Lisa decided to walk with Tyler around the block. He was little, with little legs, so she figured they'd just go around the block. As they came around the last corner, he started saying, "Auntie Weesa, isn't it really funny?" She asked, "What's funny, Tyler?"
