My then-8-year-old daughter Andrea and I were watching the Sunday night news, which included a report of the day's NFL highlights. "...and the Jets cruise past the Patriots, 34-7. Meanwhile in New Orleans..." "Daddy," Andrea interrupted, "what are patriots?" "It's a football team, honey," I replied, absently. "Sort of." "I know that," she said. "But what does it stand for?" "The way they're playing these days, not much." "Huh?" Obviously, Andrea wasn't much on sports humor. "OK," I said. "A patriot was, you know, like in the days of the Revolutionary War. People who really loved their country, like George Washington, the Minute Men and stuff." "Oh." That was that, I thought, and I returned to the football highlights until... "Daddy, what happened to the patriots?" "I don't know," I said. "A bad trade, a couple of injuries, some lousy draft picks..." "No, I mean the patriots who lived with George Washington. What happened to them?" "Well," I said, "they won the war, they established a great nation and then they all died." "Oh," Andrea said. "So patriots are kind of like dinosaurs, and they're extinct now?" I was losing ground here. But what was I supposed to say? Patriotism hasn't been high on the list of politically correct postures for a few decades. So I turned to the dictionary. A patriot, I told Andrea, is "one who loves his country and supports its authority and interests." "Oh," Andrea said. "Like the man who lives over by the school who flies his flag almost every day? He told us it's because he's proud to be an American. Is he a patriot?" "Yes," I said. "I think you could say so." "And what about Mrs. Davis?" my daughter continued. "Last week at church she was teaching us that song about America, and she was talking about the purple mountains magically and the fruity plains and she started to cry. I think she loves our country too." "That's 'purple mountains majestie' and 'fruited' plains,'" I said, "and yes, I'm sure she does." "Then she's a patriot too! And Bryan (the neighbor in the military) and Rosa (the friend who was working toward U.S. citizenship) and Chuck (the teenager who... well, I wasn't sure)." "Chuck?" I asked. "He always has a flag on his truck antenna," she explained. "I guess that qualifies him as a patriot," I said. "Everyone I know is a patriot," she said, "because everyone I know loves America!" I could have told her that there are a lot of people who would be quick to point out all of the things that are wrong about America. But then it occurred to me that maybe they complain because they care. Besides, what could be more American than criticizing the government? It's a tradition that goes back a long way -- all the way to George Washington and his fellow complaining patriots. "You're right," I said. "We're a whole country of patriots, each in our own way." "Including those guys?" she asked, gesturing toward the Patriots on the sports report. "EXCEPT those guys," I said. Hey, there's nothing patriotic about losing football games. -- Joseph Walker __________________________________________________ Joe is a Heartwarmer Gem from Utah. =========================================================== >-->From Our Friend LouiseAu :) == <^\()/^> \/::\/ jgs /::\ `''` >Jesus Is Always With You (By Caroline Naoroji) I was blessed with my 1st son, David, 6 years ago; he is a wonderful boy. He listens to me and obeys me, whatever I teach him he never forgets, and he holds onto it like a treasure. So I felt impressed in my heart that I needed to speak with him more about the Lord, so that he can always have the fear of the Lord and the love of the Lord in him. When he was about three he use to be very scared of lightning, so I told him not to be afraid and that Jesus is in his heart, and that whenever he was afraid all he had to do was touch his heart with his hand and say "Jesus I love you and thank you for being with me." Ever since then, whenever David was scared I saw him touch his heart with his hand and then smile. Last month I was going through a lot of turmoil -- my husband had been laid off from his job for 5 months, we were getting financially drained, and I was totally confused and overwhelmed. So I put both of my two boys (I have a 6-month-old boy also) to bed and went into the living room, and was waiting for my husband who had gone to the store. I was feeling lonely and I just started crying my eyes out. Then I heard the bedroom door opening and I saw David walking towards me. I immediately wiped my tears and smiled at him. He knew something was wrong as he walked up to me and said, "Mommy are you alright? Are you afraid of something?" I said, "yes honey mommy is a little afraid." Immediately he took my right hand and placed it on my heart and said, "Jesus is with you mommy, He is always with you, don't be afraid, He will take care of you mommy, and I will take care of you too." When I heard him, tears of joy just flooded my face. I hugged him, and then I looked upward to Heaven and said, "Father forgive me, for I was NOT looking at my blessings, joy, and your security, but instead I was looking at the storm. Thank you Lord for being there for me." Jesus is always with you and He will take care of you. Next time you are afraid, just place your hand on heart and you will immediately know that Jesus is there for you. The way I heard it, the story went like this: Thanksgiving Day was near. The first grade teacher gave her class a fun assignment -- to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful. Most of the class might be considered economically disadvantaged, but still many would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional goodies of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of her student's art. And they were. But Douglas made a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was the teacher's true child of misery, frail and unhappy. As other children played at recess, Douglas was likely to stand close by her side. One could only guess at the pain Douglas felt behind those sad eyes. Yes, his picture was different. When asked to draw a picture of something, for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an empty hand. His abstract image captured the imagination of his peers. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raise turkeys. Another suggested a police officer, because the police protect and care for people. Still others guessed it was the hand of God, for God feeds us. And so the discussion went -- until the teacher almost forgot the young artist himself. When the children had gone on to other assignments, she paused at Douglas' desk, bent down, and asked him whose hand it was. The little boy looked away and murmured, "It's yours, teacher." She recalled the times she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there, as she had the other students. How often had she said, "Take my hand, Douglas, we'll go outside." Or, "Let me show you how to hold your pencil." Or, "Let's do this together." Douglas was most thankful for his teacher's hand. Brushing aside a tear, she went on with her work. The story speaks of more than thankfulness. It says something about teachers teaching and parents parenting and friends showing friendship, and how much it means to the Douglases of the world. They might not always say thanks. But they'll remember the hand that reaches out. -<>- %%%% %%%%-( _%%%%%_/ \ ' / _%%%%%%%% - (_) - _%%%%%%%/ \% / , \ %%%%%%%%%\\ \_ %%%%%% \ \\ ) /\_/ /(___. \ '----' ( / ) ---....____/ (_____ __ _ ___ ___ __ _ _ _____ _ _ ___ / )---...___ =-= = -_= -=_= _-=_-_ -=- =-_ ,' ( ```--.._= -_= -_= _-=- -_= _=- ,-' ) ``--._=-_ =-=_-= _-= _ '-._ '-..___( ``-._=_-=_- =_-= ``---....__) `-._-=_-_=- )|)| `-._=-_ gnv '-'-.\_ `-. >"Summer Vacation" It was getting close to time for school to be out. Summer vacation would soon be here. Everyone was excited about having time to go swimming, visiting with family and friends and just sleeping late in the mornings. Some talked about going to the lake and others would be taking trips to DisneyWorld. Our two granddaughters, Faith and Mary Kathryn, wanted to go to the beach. Living in the center of the United States, they had never seen a beach. Both longed to sit, covered in sand, on the shores of a giant ocean. But, for their single, school teacher mom there had always been an extra job in the summer. This left little time and money for long-term vacations. As summer approached they all prayed that God would, this year, give them that much desired vacation. As the end of school came nearer Jeri Sue said to them, "Girls, I believe this is the year God is going to allow you to see a beach. We may have to stop at the first one we come too. And then come back the next day. But, God is going to arrange for us to have a beach vacation." Their prayer became, "Thank you, Lord, that this summer we will get to see that beautiful part of your world called a beach." Days continued to pass. Faith and Mary Kathryn heard their friends saying, "When school is out we are going to Branson ", and "My family is driving to Six Flags". From others came the words, "Orlando is where we are flying for our vacation." Their faith never wavered. They wanted to see a beach and God was going to answer that prayer. On the last day of school the parent of one of Jeri Sue's fifth grade students casually asked what she and the girls would be doing this summer. She told her the story of their wanting to go to the beach. To Jeri Sue's absolute amazement, Rebecca said, "I believe our time- share has a condo in Florida. I will check and see." When Jeri Sue came in from school that day there was a message on her answering machine. Reservations had been made for a full week at an ocean-front condo in Palm Beach Shores, Florida. A gift from the Tuck's. And without knowing it, Rebecca had made the reservation the week of Jeri Sue's birthday! What an awesome God we serve! What a gift from Him through the parents of a fifth grade student! A neurosurgeon in our average-size town sharing with a single mom and her two daughters who had prayed to Him to let them see a beach. Their tears of thanks soon turned into the fervor of getting ready to leave. With visions of white-capped waves billowing over their heads, they gathered up articles for a garage sale. Faith and Mary Kathryn worked any extra chore they could find to earn some spending money. One day a call came from the small Christian school where Jeri Sue teaches. Someone anonymously had left a hundred dollar bill for the vacation. Their Aunt Julia's babysitter was in Summer School for a few weeks and she needed them to stay with our other two grandchildren, Levi and Brooke. Generous is hardly the word to use when they learned how much she was giving them to help with the cousins. Birthday money for Jeri Sue came in from family members. Bathing suits, sun-tan lotion, and shoes to walk in the hot sand on the beach were bought. Finally, that long anticipated day arrived. It would take two days on the road. They didn't mind. They had their books and games. A friend had even loaned them a TV-VCR to watch their videos in the back of their Blazer. Grandma had bought, among other things, a two-hour phone card so they wouldn't have to use their cell phone in roam. They reached their halfway destination the first day in time to swim at the hotel before bedtime. Calls were made home to assure everyone they were fine and having a wonderful time. But the thoughts and dreams bouncing around in their minds were on that far Southeast state of Florida with the miles and miles of ocean and beach. The second day passed a little faster and about mid-afternoon they arrived in West Palm Beach. To get to the ocean front condo where they would be staying in Palm Beach Shores, they must go over a bridge. As they began that short journey their eyes soon began feasting on the most beautiful sight Faith and Mary Kathryn had ever seen. The Atlantic Ocean! With water and sand as far as their eyes could behold! As they crossed over Blue Heron Bridge, eight year-old Mary Kathryn, with her beautiful innocent blue eyes gazing upon that beauty she had so longed to see said, "Mama, my mouth just won't quit grinning." That is the story of their next seven days. Their hearts and mouths kept smiling. In gratefulness to God who would smile upon them enough to supernaturally provide this time for them. When Jeri Sue shared those words of Mary Kathryn's over the phone with me I thought, God smiles on His children every day. He smiles when we pray to Him and when we cherish our time with Him every day. He smiles when He provides us with food for our bodies, clothes to cover us, and shelter to live in. And then there are times like that fabulous week in Florida. God smiled while Jeri Sue, Faith, and Mary Kathryn basked in His earthly beauty of sand and sea. That had been so generously shared with them through friends. Thank you, Lord. Out of the mouths of Babes-- "And a Little Child Shall Lead them” (I certainly don't think any adult could explain this more beautifully!) It was written by an 8-year-old named Danny Dutton, who lives He wrote it for his third grade homework assignment, to'explain God.' I wonder if any of us could have done as well? (And he had such an assignment, in California, and someone published it..I guess miracles do happen!) EXPLANATION OF GOD: 'One of God's main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people - doesn't make grown-ups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way he doesn't have to take up his valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers.' 'God's second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times beside bedtime. God doesn't have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. Because he hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in his ears, unless he has thought of a way to turn it off.' 'God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn't go wasting his time by going over your mom and dad's head asking for something they said you couldn't have.' 'Atheists are people who don't believe in God. I don't think there are anyin ChulaVista . At least there aren't any who come to our church.' 'Jesus is God's Son. He used to do all the hard work, like walking on water and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn't want to learn about God. They finally got tired of him preaching to them and they crucified him. But he was good and kind, like his father, and he told his father that they didn't know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said O.K.' 'His dad (God) appreciated everything that he had done and all his hard work on earth so he told him he didn't have to go out on the road any more. He could stay in heaven. So he did. And now he helps his dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones he can take care of himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary, only more important.' 'You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time.' 'You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there's anybody you want to make happy, it's God! Don't skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong. And besides the sun doesn't come out at the beach until noon anyway.' 'If you don't believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can't go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He's around you when you're scared, in the dark or when you can't swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids.' 'But...you shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and he can take me back anytime he pleases. And...that's why I believe in God.' I reported the matter to the police station because I knew my phone had a phone tracker and could be tracked. The police were not really very helpful, since they told me that they would recover the phone and keep it as court evidence and I might never get the phone back. They gave me some paper work to take to my service provider to begin tracking my phone. I reacted by giving up the process, and bought another phone. One month later, the police informed me that my phone had been tracked to Tanzania, a neighbouring country, and they were waiting for my go ahead to begin recovery. I told them that I would not wish to proceed since I would not get my phone back. And more so, the time and money I would spend in court would be more than the phone. They persisted that they wanted to go ahead and even offered me the number of the present phone owner in case I wanted to try it out. I called the phone number and was surprised to get a very innocent college girl who had been given the phone by a friend as a gift. She was so concerned to learn that the phone was being tracked by the police, and promised to send it back. I was very skeptical and offered to withdraw the case from the police and let her own the phone. She did not want anything to do with owning a stolen phone, because of her personal Christian beliefs, and insisted on sending it back. As a Kenyan who has fallen victim to pick-pocketing before I did not put my hopes up. But I gave the girl the authority to choose what to do and even offered to help her disable the phone tracker. One weekend I was surprised to get a call from her that she had sent me the phone and wanted nothing from me in return -- not even the amount she spent on sending it. I did not know people like her still exist, and she changed my way of looking at people. I might not be able to repay her, but I hope I will one day get a chance to help someone out, too. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From LaughAndLift: _|_ | _|_ //_/\ __| ||____ ////////////\ /////////////\\ |^^^^^^^^^^||+| | # # # |||| .... ....". ||||||||||||||||| unknown The best moment in a church service is when God's people go out the church door to be the church in the world. But by entertaining a viewpoint other than God's, it put her on a slippery slope that quickly led to disobedience. Do you find yourself listening to the world's way of thinking? It's pervasive. It comes to us through TV, magazines, movies, friends, malls, and catalogs. A steady diet of worldly influences will shape our view of what's valuable, what's beautiful, and what's important. We can't expose ourselves to the world's false, deceptive ways and expect to come out unscathed. Eve's first mistake wasn't eating the fruit. It was listening to the serpent. As you and I listen to input today, let's remember the words of Psalm 1: "Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or stand in the way of sinners, or sit in the seat of the mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night." Sandi pretended to be thinking very hard, scratching her head and saying, "Hmmmm," when he added, "I'll give you a help hint, it starts with FIRST." -- Sandi Pound of Lehigh, Florida .''. .''. *''* :_\/_: . :_\/_: . .:.*_\/_* : /\ : .'.:.'. .''.: /\ : _\(/_ ':'* /\ * : '..'. -=:o:=- :_\/_:'.:::. /)\*''* .|.* '.\'/.'_\(/_'.':'.' : /\ : ::::: '*_\/_* | | -= o =- /)\ ' * '..' '` |____ jgs~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nolan, 8, went out with his mom and dad to celebrate his father's birthday. It was his first experience at a fancy restaurant. The waiter at the Cork 'n Cleaver restaurant showed him the children's menu and suggested the Hawaiian chicken, telling Nolan it would be the best chicken he would ever eat. During dinner the waiter came around and asked Nolan how he liked his meal. Nolan said the chicken was just delicious and "almost as good as McDonald's" (the highest compliment he could give!) -- George and Marilyn Klink of Wolcottville, Indiana Here is another story from the Klinks. They took their two oldest grandchildren, Nolan and Haley, both 8, to Disneyworld last August. It was very hot and humid. George and Marilyn were struggling with the heat and the crowds. The roller coaster ride at Space Mountain nearly did them in, and they decided Disneyworld was for the young at heart. But on the way home Haley said, "That was so much fun. It was like the fairy tale ending!" That made the trip even more special. "We would go again in a heartbeat," the Klinks say. In the town where Phyllis lived a train track ran beside the doctor's office. When her youngest son was 4 he was kneeling on a chair looking out the window when a train went past. "Mom, look! That train is full of TIDE." Phyllis looked out to see how he knew it. On the side of all the box cars was this: DT&I, which stood for the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton Railroad. The ampersand sign looked like an "e." -- "This was in Adrian, Mich. about 50 years ago. The railroad track is gone and is now a walking trail," says Phyllis Reasoner. Zoie, 6, was with her mother at the airport waiting for her uncle to arrive. Zoie asked, "Mommy, is Uncle Bryan my aunt?" Her mother answered "no" and then added a question of her own, "Would that make Uncle Tyler your aunt?" Without delay Zoie, thinking "ant," answered, "No, Mommy, he is a human!" -- Vera Kreft (mother of Zoie) of Auburn, Indiana ( (_) ### . (#c __\|/__ #\ wWWWw \ \-. (Sara admits it is sometimes hard to make the transition from driving on the highway to driving on Main Street.) It was a very busy day. Sara had forgotten about the encounter with the police officer by the end of the day. That night while after reading the story of Jacob's ladder to the kids at bedtime, she went over the list of questions at the end of the story. The children love to answer Bible story questions. One question was, "What happened to Jacob on his journey?" Isaiah, 3, said, "I hope it wasn't a police car." -- Sara Grepke of Kendallville, Indiana Dawn is getting married on June 20. Her fiance Steve's nephew, Isaiah, is going to be the ring bearer. He came with his mom to Santa Fe one weekend to get fitted for his tuxedo. They came and ate lunch first. Isaiah was getting impatient and kept telling his mom: "I want to get my bear costume!" Betty asked him what he meant. He said, "I am the ring bear so I have to wear a bear costume" -- Dawn Keen of Santa Fe, New Mexico Mommy and Nana were watching a television program while soon to be 3-year-old Stella sat between them doing artwork. She rubbed her hands together quite dramatically and asked Mommy if she could put some rub-a-dub-shampoo in her hair. Mommy agreed and Stella wiped her hands on the top of Mommy's head. Then she asked, "Do you want more?" Mommy asked her what rub-a-dub-shampoo was and Stella said, "I wipe from my nose, rub it in my hand and put it in your hair." Needless to say there was no more rub-a-dub-shampooing going on. -- Nana Suzy of Springfield, Oregon Here is another story from Nana Suzy. Great-grandma was using an exercise ball to work out. Stella wanted to work out too so Great-grandma told her to get a ball out of her toy box. Stella chose a soccer ball that was in desperate need of some inflating. When Great-grandma told Stella that the ball needed air and showed her where the air would go in, Stella walked to the sliding glass door, opened it, and put the "navel" of the ball out the door to get the air! _ (_) <___> | |______ | |* * * ) | | * * (_________ | |* * * |* *|####) | | * * *| * | (________________ | |* * * |* *|####|##############| | | * * *| * | | | | |* * * |* *|####|##############| | |~~~~~~| * | | | | |######|* *|####|##############| | | |~~~' | | | |######|########|##############| | | | | | | |######|########|##############| | |~~~~~~| | | | | |########|##############| | | '~~~~~~~~| | | | |##########JGS#| | | '~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | | | | | | Mommy and Nana went to the store to pick out a hanging flower basket for Great-grandma for Mother's Day. Stella wanted a plant, too. She picked out a purple daisy plant and they took it home. Two weeks later, they were on the back patio looking at the lilies that Momma and Stella had planted. Stella walked to her daisy plant and cried out in distress. Someone had "blowed out her flowers!" The plant had lost all of the blooms and was just the stems. Cathy keeps kids in her home and they were coloring a letter Y with a picture of some yarn on it. Nolan, 4, asked what it was. Cathy told him it was yarn and yarn was kind of like string. Jacob, 4, said, "No, I know what it is, it is a toy for a cat." -- Cathy of Dillard, Georgia Note: You are welcomed to use, copy and share these stories, but please reference http://www.funnykids.com as the source. ========================================================== -=====- _..._ .~ `~. ,_ / } ,_\'--, \ _.'`~~/ \'--,_`{_,} -( '.`-.`\;--,___.'_ '._`/ |_ _{@} / ` |-';/ _ / \ / | _ {@}_ / '--;_ _ {@} _Y{@} _\ `\ {@}\Y/_{@} Y/ / |`-.___. / \Y/\|{@}Y/\|// ^^^jgs^^^`--`------'`--`^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ >-->I called tonight!
