They sat in comfort, while unbeknownst to them, terrorists attacked the United States of America. Hijacked passenger jets, filled with hundreds of passengers were flown into the two towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan, New York and into the Pentagon in Washington, DC. The United States made the unprecedented move to shut the airspace over the United States to all but military aircraft. International flights to the USA were diverted to Canada. The small town of Gander, Newfoundland, was overwhelmed by thirty-eight planes, carrying almost seven thousand passengers. In a matter of hours, the “plane people”, as they became known, nearly doubled the population of the town. A plea went out to the residents, "Please do what you can for these people. Come out, lend a hand, anything you can do will be accepted." Gander residents opened their homes, their stores, their schools and their hearts. On Delta flight 15, Shirley Brooks-Jones, her fellow passengers, plus the crew, sat on the runway, unable to disembark. Captain Michael Sweeney kept things under control. The air conditioning and bathrooms continued to work and food was provided. After more than twenty-eight hours, they were allowed to leave the plane and to meet an amazing population of people. They were greeted with open arms. I had the opportunity to speak to Shirley Brooks-Jones recently. She told a wonderful story of caring and love. "Michael, you wouldn’t believe it. The residents of Gander took people into their homes. Even in the stores, they wouldn’t accept our money. People needed clothes, Walmart gave it to them. Many people had prescription drugs on their checked baggage, which they couldn’t take off the plane; doctors examined them and wrote new prescriptions for free. The prescriptions were then filled at local drug stores at no cost. "One man said he was at the store getting supplies and the cashier offered her home to them, so they could shower. "It was amazing, Michael. I remember being on the bus to Lewisporte from Gander, where we would be housed after we were allowed off the plane. I looked at the scenery. It reminded me of southeast Ohio, where I grew up at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. I felt at home. "The US airspace reopened on September 13th, but we didn’t leave until the 15th. We spent four wonderful days with our now extended family." On the flight to Atlanta, Shirley looked down at the small town of Gander and nearby Lewisporte, thought about her wonderful experience there and knew she had to do something. She asked to speak to captain Michael Sweeney. "Captain Sweeney, I would like to make an announcement over the intercom. I want to ask for pledges to start a scholarship fund for the students of Lewisporte. These people can’t afford to send many of the kids to university. I want to give back what they gave us." Captain Sweeney, against rules, agreed to Shirley’s request. Several people helped Shirley create pledge sheets, which they handed out to the passengers. At the end of the flight, they counted pledges totaling more than fifteen thousand dollars. An anonymous donor matched the total. The fund, called Lewisporte Area Flight 15 Scholarship Fund and managed by The Columbus Foundation has since raised more than one million dollars and continues to grow. (Website is here: http://goo.gl /aydmC ) A committee in Lewisporte, made up by the principal, counselor and teachers distribute the funds based on the guidelines agreed on by Shirley and the Columbus Foundation. The scholarships are given to children, as long as they maintain an average of 85%, to receive help for further education. They need to be active in the community and write an essay as to why they want to receive the scholarship. Some of the students have gone into the ministry, medical fields, etc. Since that dreadful day in 2001, Shirley has returned to Gander and Lewisporte twenty-two times. She returns for memorial services each year on 9/11 and again in the spring to hand out scholarships. When there, she walks through the streets and is greeted, "Hey, Shirley! You’re back. It’s great to see you again." She’s part of their family -- forever. In 2007, Shirley received a call from a protocol office to announce she was nominated to receive "The Order of Newfoundland and Labrador" and asked if she would be willing to travel to Newfoundland to attend the ceremonies. Shirley said, "Michael, my knees weakened. I almost fell to the floor." The date for the ceremony was December 7, the day Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Nine people received the award that day. After the presentations, the Lieutenant Governor held a luncheon. During the luncheon, a lady walked up to Shirley and thanked her for all she had done for their community. She then added, "You may not know this but you where the 9th person to receive the award at the exact moment when the clock chimed 11." Shirley has been interviewed many times since that tragic day. She was once asked to describe how poor the communities of Gander and Lewisporte were. Shirley refused. "How can you ask me how poor they were? They are not poor. They are richer than all of us. They are rich with family, life, caring and heart." The love and appreciation the people of Gander/Lewiesporte showed to those stranded will never be forgotten. It is their legacy. -- Michael T. Read Psalms 19:8 (The precepts of the Lord are right making the heart glad. The commandment of the Lord is radiant, making the eyes light up.) The healthiest Christians you will ever meet are not those with perfect physiques but those who take a daily dose of God's Word and choose to believe it works! Read 1 Corinthians 1:18 (To those who are perishing, the message of the cross is foolishness, but to us who are saved, it is God's power.) I fear we may have become so legalistic that we have dropped the word 'happy' from our Religious vocabulary. God just plain makes me happy. Read Psalms 40:16 (Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You. Let those who love Your salvation continually say "The Lord is great!") No one has ever done more to show you that you were unloved than God has done to show you that you ARE loved. Read 1 John 4:9 (God's love was revealed among us in this way: God sent His One and Only Son into the world so that we MIght LIVE through Him.) Have you been among the living dead???? Will you continue to sit in a dark tomb or walk into the light of resurrection life??? Lazarus, come forth!! Read Ezra 9:8 (Grace has come from the Lord our God to preserve a remnant for us and give us a stake in His Holy place. Even in our slavery, God has given us new life and light to our eyes.) We're all looking for a quick fix but God is after lasting change lifestyle Christianity. To possess a steadfast mind is to practice a steadfast mind. Read Psalms 119:54-56 (Your statutes are the theme of my song during my earthly life. I remember Your name in the night, Lord, and I keep Your law. This is my practice. I obey Your precepts.) When the devil tries to use your physical lineage against you, use your spiritual lineage against him!!!! As a child of God and a joint heir with Christ, refuse the enemy a single inch of the ground you are taking back. Read Colossians 3:23-24 (Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically as something done for the Lord and not for men, knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord you serve. The Lord Jesus Christ.) When you make a daily practice of inviting God's Love to fill your hollow places and make sure you are not hindering the process, God will begin to satisfy you more than you can comprehend. Read Ephesians 1:22-23 (He put everything under His feet and appointed Him as head over everything for the church, which is His body, the fullness of the One who fills all things in every way.) I am middle aged and I am the happiest that I have ever been in my life. The reason for this is that I am learning to see myself as beautiful to Christ! Read 1 Peter 3:4 (The imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit is very valuable in God's eyes.) God never misses a single groan or cry of his children. When the time is right, God will move in behalf of His children. Read Exodus 3:8 (I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and to bring them from that land to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey.) We are never more beautiful portrayals of mortals who know and believe God than when others can look at our lives, hear our testimonies, and say, "it is true." That is what it means to be living proof. Read Isaiah 43:9 (Who among them can declare this, and tell us the former things??? He was 92 at that time and I wondered why the Church even bothered to ask the old gentleman to preach at that age. After a warm welcome, introduction of this speaker, and as the applause quieted down he rose from his high back chair and walked slowly, with great effort and a sliding gate to the podium. Without a note or written paper of any kind he placed both hands on the pulpit to steady himself and then quietly and slowly he began to speak.... "When I was asked to come here today and talk to you, your pastor asked me to tell you what was the greatest lesson ever learned in my 50 odd years of preaching. I thought about it for a few days and boiled it down to just one thing that made the most difference in my life and sustained me through all my trials. The one thing that I could always rely on when tears and heart break and pain and fear and sorrow paralyzed me... The only thing that would comfort was this verse......... "Jesus loves me this I know. For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong, We are weak but He is strong..... Yes, Jesus loves me... The Bible tells me so." When he finished, the church was quiet. You actually could hear his footsteps as he shuffled back to his chair. I don't believe I will ever forget it. The role of men and women in the Bible is laid out via verses and examples. When it comes to marriage, the Bible gives clear directives of the roles men and women should follow. The Bible makes it clear that men take the leadership role in marriage. While the Christian man's role is leadership, the way the Bible defines the leadership often differs from the way secular men and women might define leadership. The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood's Dennis Rainey suggests the term "servant/leader" as appropriate for the role of a man in Christian marriage. Duty of Leadership The Christian man has a duty to lead and direct his family. This means he takes a position of management in the family. The husband makes the ultimate decision based on the needs of the marriage, but he does consult his wife before deciding. Like any good manager of a business would talk to the employees about problems or solutions, a husband should consult his wife and make a decision that is best for both the husband and wife in the marriage. Love in Leadership The Bible tells men that they are to love their wives. Dennis Rainey wrote on the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood's website that men should receive their wife as a gift, just as Adam saw Eve as a gift from God and a helpmate in his life. A man should love his wife and see that she is precious, and thus make decisions that are beneficial for both his wife's and his needs. Service in Leadership A Christian man is a leader in the marriage, but at times he takes the role of a servant. The Moorings points out that a husband should have his wife's best interests at heart, which might sometimes mean cleaning the dishes, taking out the trash or even taking care of his wife if she falls ill. Respect Leaders in business are respectful of their employees and the needs of their employees. The same is true in the Christian marriage. A husband needs to respect his wife and listen to her when she has a suggestion, even if ultimately he decides against her suggestions. A husband that respects his wife will have respect in turn and a wife who is willing to submit to his decisions of her own free will. -<>- (\ /) \/ W.Madison \/ (\ /) (X) o00- _ _ -00o (X) (/|\) (')< >(') (/|\) | (@ ) ( @) | \|/|||||||||| ^^ |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| ^^ ||||wsm|||\|/ >GROWING GARDENS AND GROWING CHILDREN by Barbara Rainey Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. GALATIANS 6:9 I love the way a garden looks when it's clean and neat, when all the soil is evened out and the weeds are pulled up. But I know too well that the hard work of a Saturday morning will be repeated again and again, all season long. It never takes more than a week or two of neglect before weeds are sprouting all over the place. Parenting is a lot like that. Just when you think you've finally mastered one area, you wake up the next day and a whole new issue is facing you. It's so easy to forget that parenting is a process. A long, long process. You go to bed at night sometimes relishing those little victories, thinking all is secure and right with the world. But it's not very long before something else crops up. Infant issues morph into young-toddler issues. Toddler issues become school-age issues— the unmade bed, the homework, not coming to the table when we call. Then it's on to adolescent issues—the emotional turbulence, the anger, the words they hear and pick up at school (and at church!). Remember that building character is the most important goal in parenting. Imprinting a child's heart with the image of God takes time and repeated effort, often reworking the same ground repeatedly to keep bad behaviors from becoming habits. So I encourage you today not to give up. Don't lose heart. The Bible promises great reward to those who faithfully persevere through the long days, the long battles that often don't even stop for bedtime. I assure you, all that weeding will pay off. DISCUSS Name the biggest issues you're dealing with in the lives of your children. Or name one issue that is just around the corner. PRAY Thank Him for the wisdom, energy and ability He provides to get through each day, knowing that His supply is sufficient and His promises are sure. Pray for one another in this long process of child rearing. as seen in Moments Together For Couples -<>- , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' >THIS WAS HIS FINAL VERDICT! "Behold, all is vanity!" Ecclesiastes 1:14 Nothing can fully satisfy a person—but the Lord's love and the Lord's own self. Christians have tried other pursuits—but they have been driven out of such fatal refuges. Solomon, the wisest of men, was permitted to make experiments for us all; and to do for us—what we must not dare to do for ourselves. Here is his testimony in his own words, "So I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before me. I denied myself nothing my eyes desired. I refused my heart no pleasure. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind! Nothing was gained under the sun!" "Meaningless! Meaningless!" says the Teacher. "Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless!" What! Is the whole of it meaningless? O favored monarch—is there nothing in all your wealth? Nothing in that wide dominion reaching from the river even to the sea? Nothing in your glorious palaces? Is there nothing—in all your music and dancing, and wine and luxury? "Nothing!" he says, "but a chasing after the wind!" This was his final verdict—after he had trodden the whole round of pleasure. To embrace our Lord Jesus, to dwell in His love, and be fully assured of union with Him—this is all in all. Dear reader, you need not try other forms of pleasure in order to see whether they are better than Christ. If you roam the whole world—you will see no sights like a sight of the Savior's face! If you could have all the comforts of life—without the Savior, you would be most wretched. But if you possess Christ—though you should rot in a dungeon— you would find it a paradise! Though you should live in obscurity, or die with famine—yet you would be satisfied with the favor and goodness of the Lord! It was the year 1910 when Abraham Bank, my great-grandfather, was impressed into the Russian army. At the time, he was twenty-one years old and had lived near Vilna in Lithuania for his entire life. He was a qualified rabbi, shochet, and mohel. The prospect of twenty-five years of mandatory military service was unthinkable to Abraham. So he decided to pack a few clothes and personal belongings and leave his hometown during the night. He promised his girlfriend, Rebecca, that he would write. Abraham traveled via Finland to Stockholm, Sweden, where he worked for a while as a stevedore. He earned his passage to London where he continued to work. His goal was to earn enough money to follow in the footsteps of his uncle, who had already immigrated to America. Two years after leaving his home in Lithuania, Abraham was finally able to buy a ticket on a ship leaving from Southampton that would take him from England to America. Abraham ran into two difficulties. The first was the knowledge that he would not be able to get kosher food in the steerage class of the ship. The second was the trouble he would have in getting from London to Southampton over Passover, as the holiday ended on the night before the ship would be boarding. Finally, Abraham decided not to use his ticket. He remained in London for a few months and then immigrated to South Africa, where eight years later Rebecca joined him. It was not until 1987 that Abraham's descendants - his grandson (my father) and his family - made the move to America that Abraham had come so close to making seventy-five years earlier. I have good cause to be grateful to Zeida for deciding not to use that ticket all those years ago. In fact, it might well have been the best decision he ever made. The name of the ship that steamed into the Atlantic that day was the Titanic. -<>- This Prayer was given in 1996, but is probably more relevant today than ever. When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new sessions of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard: THE PRAYER Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask Your forgiveness and to seek Your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, "Woe to those who call evil good," but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We confess: We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it Pluralism. We have worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism. We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent to direct us to the center of your will. I ask it in the Name of Your Son, the living Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest. In six short weeks, Central Christian Church, where Rev. Wright is pastor, logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India, Africa, and Korea. Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on "The Rest of the Story" on the radio and received a larger response to this program than any other he has ever aired. With the Lord's help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and wholeheartedly become our desire so that we again can be called one nation under God. -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment Who Is Jesus Christ? http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/BibleStudy/whoisjesus.html Christianity http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/BibleStudy/christianity.html In The Beginning http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/BibleStudy/inthebeginning.html Akiane Child Prodigy http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/prodigy.html Story of LuLu http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/poems/kanga.html God's Paintings http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/gpaints.html Aww Animals http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/animals.html Awesome Photos http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/awesome.html Think Positive! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/positive.html Crayola Art 2 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/crayolaart2.html Best Parents! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/bestparents.html -<>- >From Our Friend Linda :) Crazy Granny! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owHaMKe3YqM Static Dog http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aO-phqmyqdY --- ...LMAO! We take turns feeding since we board our horses quite far from our homes in northwest Arkansas. My horse, Red, is 26, with worn teeth and other problems associated with elderly horses. When he suddenly stopped eating, Jeanine knew something was wrong. He coughed and a watery feed and saliva mixture streamed from both nostrils. Alarmed, Jeanine called various area veterinarians for help and advice. It's difficult for a doctor to diagnose over the phone, but several vets believed Red was choking on his feed and unable to swallow. She was instructed to massage his throat to loosen the obstruction, but no one was available to come out. Red needed help, but we don't have a truck or a trailer to transport our horses to the vet. Jeanine finally contacted me after work, and I made more calls while driving the half-hour to the farm. Reaching our large animal vet, I requested help as soon possible. Dr. France and his assistant arrived at the farm a half-hour after I did. Red had been choking for over three hours. Dr. France tried to put a tube through Red's nose, down his esophagus, and into his stomach. Unfortunately, the tube kept kinking and would not travel to the problem area. After 90 minutes we had to try something else. Red was tired, his nose was sore (even with painkiller), and the tube wasn't working. One way or another the obstruction had to be cleared or Red would die a slow and painful death. In desperation, I got into my car and drove down the highway until I saw a house with stock trailers and a Limousin cattle sign. I knocked, and a stocky fellow with short dark hair, dressed in jeans and T-shirt answered. I poured out my story and asked for help. He wanted to help, but was leaving for a meeting, so asked me to check across the road with his neighbors who have horses, to see if they could help. But they weren't home, and when I hurried back to my car, he came out and said he'd help. He cancelled his plans, hooked up his truck and trailer, and drove my horse the twenty-plus miles to Dr. France's office. At the horse barn with the proper set-up, the obstruction in Red's throat was eventually cleared. Red was kept overnight for observation and put on an antibiotic to reduce the risk of aspiration pneumonia (caused by food entering the lungs). I brought Red home on Friday; he nearly dragged me off my feet he was so happy to see his pasture. I don't know the name of the man who helped. But knowing where he lived, I dropped off a card, gas money, and a gift certificate for dinner at a restaurant. I just wanted to thank him again for his extraordinary act of kindness to a total stranger and her horse. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: >FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY _ (_) |_________________________________________ |* * * * * |##########################| | * * * * *| | |* * * * * |##########################| | * * * * *| | |* * * * * |##########################| | * * * * *| | |* * * * * |##########################| |~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | |#########################################| | | |#########################################| | | |###################################JGS###| |~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | | | | | | | In honor of 9/11/01 Janice shares this story about her granddaughter Macey, 6, who decided to make a flag for her "Papaw's" toolbox at work. As Janice and Macey worked on the flag, they talked about the symbolism of the flag, which Macey was already familiar with. They drew the 13 stripes to represent the 13 original colonies and 50 stars to represent all of the states. As they continued to color the flag they had laid out, Macey stopped and drew a 51st star. "This is for God," Macey explained. "One nation under God." -- Janice Higgins of Whitestown, Indiana Heather, 3, was driving through the country with her mother. For gold is cold and lifeless, it can neither see nor hear... And in the time of trouble It is powerless to cheer...
