These new pages give us more sweet dogs acting as God intended them to for their human owners. Some people think that making dogs do certain things to service people is cruel but they do not understand that dogs love to please people - especially when doing things that comes natural to them and they already love doing - all while getting a special reward or treat for doing it! My own Tupperware was more than a dozen years old, and while the stuff never breaks, mine had begun to look craggy and tired. In fact, it looked a lot like me. I tacked the flyer on the kitchen corkboard and marked the date on the calendar with a big star. "What's a Tupperware party?" my youngest asked innocently. "It's a party where you buy Tupperware," I said. She looked at me as if some of my brain matter had shifted and fallen down into my liver. "You WANT to go to that?" she asked, incredulous. There was no way for me to make her understand that after fourteen years of motherhood, where exhilaration is often measured in moments where you find "key buy specials" even on the Max-Pack aisle at the grocery store, a Tupperware party does sound exciting. I warned all the kids that I would tolerate no jokes about my attendance at this soiree, and that nobody should attempt to stop me from going. I counted the hours until the party. Sure enough, an unforeseen emergency involving one of the children and an unauthorized, self-inflicted, multi-level haircut made me arrive nearly an hour late. I was so mad! I had missed Tami's dynamic demonstration of the products. Now how could I possibly choose among such marvels as the Fridge Stackables sets, Forget Me Not Containers, FridgeSmart containers for produce, modular mates for non-perishables, antimicrobial cutting boards and ultra thin cookie lifters? All the guests had their faces screwed in concentration inside various catalogs. They looked if they were cramming for a final exam. Looking at the dizzying array of Tupperware on the display table, I didn't know where to begin. I began to study my own catalogs, filled with enticing, full-color photos of approximately 4 billion essential Tupperware products. Looking at all the tumblers, bowl sets, cake servers, pitchers, microwave and freezer-safe containers, I came to the conclusion that I needed just about everything. I sidled over to my friend Nancy, who was studying a summer catalog as if she might discover the meaning of life in its pages. "Nancy, do you think I should get the CrystalWave Luncheon Dish set with red tops or the blue tops?" "Can't help you," Nancy said. "I've got enough trouble trying to decide between the round versus rectangular sandwich keepers, or between the One Touch Reminder Canister Set or the Access Mates canisters. I'll probably be here until midnight." Now, I am old enough to remember the days when the most complicated thing about Tupperware was remembering to "burp" the lids to ensure freshness. But this! This was wretched plastic excess, in Flame Red, Sunset Orange, Sunshine Yellow and too many other colors to count. Even worse, refrigerator Tupperware containers now came with two little vents that provided airflow to keep food fresh longer. We had to learn, via Tupperware instructions, how to store carrots (one vent open) versus cucumbers (both open). I was not about to ask about a mixed vegetable salad, for fear there would be some kind of official Tupperware response, perhaps involving the rotating of the open vents on an hourly basis. These products promised miracles -- salads that would defy the passage of time, remaining as crisp and fresh after a week as they had been on the day they were picked. Celery that you could tie into a French knot would be a thing of the past. Tami noticed my utter confusion. She tapped me on the shoulder and whispered, "Tupperware will transform your life -- for the better!" I'm usually wary of big promises like this, but there was something seductive about all this clean, clear Tupperware. Inexplicably, I began to feel that my life truly would not be complete without the Metric Magic Measuring Set (even though I don't speak metric), the Horizontal and Vertical Peeler, and a Freeze-Smart Set with a "use-by" date dial that plays Beethoven's Fifth Symphony when you open the freezer on the use-by date. Swept up by the excitement, I started ordering Tupperware like a woman possessed. Repeating the mantra, "Tupperware will transform my life -- for the better!" I pointed helter skelter at nearly every display piece on the table and various sets in the catalogs. Tami wrote up my order, madly trying to keep up and trying to contain her own excitement. After all, the more I bought, the more free stuff she got. After I added three Tigger Lunch Sets to my order, even though my kids are old enough to use real plates on the occasions they don't just eat with their hands, she fanned herself and sat down. She was now only a salad spinner away from winning a Caribbean cruise. I wrote a check for something close to our monthly mortgage, and went home in a daze. A week later, the UPS man arrived with many enormous boxes. Like someone with a hangover, I had no recollection of having ordered half the stuff. I now have enough Tupperware to store every product known to agriculture. My refrigerator is a study in blue-tinted containers of every conceivable size. My pantry has been redecorated in hunter green, a testament to Tupperware order. Unfortunately, I still have a lot more Tupperware than I have food. The good news is that I have discovered that Tupperware also keeps clean socks smelling fresh for several weeks at a time. And you don't even have to remember to open the vents. -- Judy Gruen ___________________________________________ Judy Gruen is the author of the humorous Carpool Tunnel Syndrome: Motherhood as Shuttle Diplomacy. It would be nice if immigrants would integrate to our society instead of wishing to make it like their home country which they fled or left for reasons of war, inhumanity or poverty etc. Our country was built on Godly freedoms not restrictions. We don't need them overtaking and trying to change us into a country like theirs that inhibits it's people's God given rights. Was it something I said? Was it something I did? I know we've been through this before. But it's different now. Back then, I was young and foolish. I'll admit I took you for granted. You came into my life and I never really appreciated you. When you left each time, I hardly noticed you were gone. Maybe because I knew you'd be back. You always came back. But now, more than ever before in my life, I need you. The last time you left me, I thought you'd be gone for good. I longed for the warmth of your touch. My world seemed dark and dreary. These past few months together have been glorious. I awakened each day eager to see you again. Never once did you let me down. Our time together along the shore was absolutely perfect. Our days together basking in the sunlight will serve me well as precious memories in the cold empty days ahead. The flowers you gave me were beautiful, matched only by colors of the blue skies, rainbows and sunsets. I would follow you if I could. But you know I must stay behind once more. Please promise you'll come back. But before you go, give me one last, magnificent day, then lay upon my lips a final kiss, so warm and tender. I will remember you, my friend, as I close my eyes and face the cold winter days ahead. You will be tucked away in a safe place in my soul, with the memories of the red rose, the sunflower, lilies of the valley, peonies, and yes even the dandelion. I will remember the sounds of laughter in the park, the fireworks after dark and the sweet smells of church picnics, ethnic festivals and fresh mowed lawns. I am getting too old to face the cold. But if God should grant me more time with you, you'll find me here waiting with open arms for your return, once more. Farewell... It was an especially dark night, with no moon to reflect upon the still water. Only a few stars flickered between clouds. Shivering again, I tucked my legs up under me. I wasn't sure if the chill was from the cold air or from the despair in my heart. My problem seemed so much bigger than I was, Our dearly loved teenage son had run away from home. My cheeks were streaked with tears. I had no concept of how long I had been sitting there, crying out to the Lord. "Please reveal yourself to me. I need to feel you near. I need evidence of your presence" The pine trees rustled gently overhead, moved by an unseen breeze. How I longed for a visible sign, a rustling of his presence, a soft breeze of the Holy Spirit. "Please Lord, just a special little light up in the dark pines then I will know that you are here and that you care." Darkness prevailed. The lake lapped quietly against a piece of rock. I felt someone approach, lovingly, my other son placed a jacket around my shoulders and then quietly slipped away. Soon, one by one, the house lights went out, and the darkness intensified. I was surrounded by quiet dark and I felt so alone. Finally, cold and discouraged. I uncurled myself from the bench and giving a last longing look over my shoulders up into the pines I climbed the hill and crawled into bed. Morning arrived all too soon. I was emotionally exhausted. I stumbled into the kitchen going through the motions of fixing breakfast and getting the children off to school. With a heavy heart I began to straighten the house once again asking the Lord to reveal himself. I was beginning to make the bed, when the phone rang, I heard the familiar voice of a friend say, " I just wanted you to know I Love you and am praying for you." A few minutes later, the phone rang again, " I just wanted to let you know that you have been on my mind lately, Are you alright?" The caller assured me of her love and prayers. All during the day, in phone call after phone call, loving friends offered love, concern and support. That evening, 2 friends called to say they were coming over to pray with us. Suddenly I realized the Lord had revealed Himself to me.....again and again.......all day long.....lovingly and tenderly. I was looking for a light in my darkness and He sent more than one. I asked Him to reveal Himself and His love to me in a special way. And He did. Not through night whispers, mysterious rustlings, or glimmers in the treetops, but in a way that I could feel. Through His people. Humbly I bowed my head, thank you Lord. Just why was I not crumbling, amid my soulful pain At watching loved-ones suffer so, as clouds turned into rain? On darkest days, when life seemed harsh, and hopelessness seeped in A little spirit whispered close, "Fear not", and I would grin. For at those times, I'd feel my Savior walking by my side. I hadn't thought to call Him, but He matched me, stride for stride. 'Twas though I had an angel calling on the Lord of Love To help me through the rough spots and to guide me from above. O'er and o'er the days would come when I could sense this thing - That little spirit whisper, knowing not from whence it came. As time went on, and skies turned dark amid life's revelry I felt it even stronger, though the source eluded me. So I prayed - and I said, "Master, I'm aware you carry me Through good and bad, and joy and pain, you never set me free. "But that little whisper, Master, it's quite a mystery - Please tell me where it comes from - I'm so curious, you see." And right that very moment I was jolted from my prayer With the ringing of the telephone, an old friend to say she cared. And she told me of her daughter, who was barely four years old, How she prays each night at bedtime, all tucked in from the cold. And she wanted me to know that little child on bended knee Was praying for me nightly, with great regularity. But she had all the time in the world...her world. She seemed healthy enough and yet, she was dying. "I've lived a good life," she said. She meant it, too. She lived by herself most of her life. That is after her mother passed away. She was very content working at the small local library. Particularly because she loved children so much. They, in turn, loved Miss Penny. So all of this came as a shock to her and the community. This small town was close when it came to caring for its own. "We'll do everything we can to make you comfortable," the mayor said. And they did. There wasn't a night that went by when Miss Penny didn't have a home cooked meal waiting for her. The ladies auxiliary of the church set up a schedule and kept those wonderful meals coming daily. That is until she just couldn't enjoy them any more. "I made a promise to myself a long time ago that I'd do something big for this town. But it seems I failed that one," she said to one friend. "Oh, nonsense, Penny. You are the best thing that's ever happened to this town. Look how you've pulled us all together," one person told her. "And the children love you!" another added. "But the promise. I still never really kept my promise," she said as she took another deep breath into the machine next to her bed. "Don't you worry about the promise, Penny. Don't you worry." Talk on Main Street each morning always focused on how Miss Penny was doing. In recent days the word wasn't so very good. "She's not well at all," one friend reported. "We really need to hurry things along." There were plans brewing in this town and it took the effort of every single man, woman and child, to make it work. "Help keep "Penny's Promise" the signs said and they were posted all over town. It all began one day when one of Miss Penny's littlest friends came up with the idea. When you looked at Danny's big blue eyes you just couldn't say no. From there it just blossomed. Finally, on the Friday before the big announcement, Miss Penny took a turn for the worse. They were to gather at the church on Sunday and march in procession to her home. The church musicians and a few from outside the town volunteered to play as the entire town would join in. "We need to do it tonight," Danny said to his Dad. "But it's the big football game. No one will be available." "Wait, just wait and see." The game was scheduled to begin at 7:00. The stadium located about two blocks from her house was filled to capacity. Just as the game was about to get underway, an announcement came over the speaker. "Excuse me!" the little voice echoed. "Hello!" he tried again. "Listen up!" his Dad shouted over the microphone. "I'm Danny. Miss Penny isn't doing so well tonight. I need your help. "Penny's Promise was to happen on Sunday after church, but...well...Miss Penny...." He couldn't finish telling them that she might not make it. One of the announcers took over. "Look, I know that this is a big game tonight, but we have something more important right now." He explained what they needed and the crowd roared with acceptance to his challenge. Danny rushed out and headed to her home. The doctor greeted him at the door. "Sir, we need to see Miss Penny," Danny said. "Son, this isn't a good time. Miss Penny needs her..." He was interrupted by the frail, soft voice of Miss Penny. "Danny is that you?" she asked. He rushed to her side and held her hand. "Miss Penny, we have a surprise for you," he said. Off in the distance she could hear the sound of the high school marching band playing. Oddly, it grew louder and louder. "Is it a parade?" she asked Danny. "It's Penny's Promise!" he said. The band circled the entire house. Hundreds of people could be heard gathering in her front lawn. The mayor and the head of the women's auxiliary entered the room. Danny took over. "You made a promise to do something big for this town. We called it "Penny's Promise" and helped you do it. Danny then dumped a huge jar full of pennies on the table next to her bed. "That's not all!" he shouted. Then one by one dozens of people came marching through the door, each carrying a container filled with pennies, quarters and bills. "We're going to build a new library, Miss Penny and it's yours!" Danny said. He then began to cry as he laid his head on her shoulder. Miss Penny was overwhelmed. As weak as she was just moments before, she suddenly seemed vibrant and alive. "Penny's Promise" was born from one little boy's love and one woman's passion for learning. That Sunday, as they gathered to tally this massive penny collection, Miss Penny passed away. But if you take a walk down Main Street today you'll see the newly constructed building. The sign over the door says, "Miss Penny's Promise." When you enter you'll find Danny's jar at the front desk. If you have some extra change, you too can help keep "Penny's Promise." They're adding a wing next year. Danny's heading the fundraiser. "I believe in you!" Bob Perks Bob@BobPerks.com Please don't remove my name and contact info! He had such a good time as he raced down the tracks. He blew his whistle at all his friends along the way. His friend the horse galloped alongside to the end of the pasture. His friend the duck soared over his steaming smokestack. But one day the happy train stopped being happy. He began to envy his friends. The horse could go anywhere he wanted in his pasture and the duck could fly through the sky. "But all I ever get to do is stay on the tracks!" grumbled the not-so-happy little train. "How can I get off my tracks?" wondered the little train. "Maybe if I go really fast at the curve. Then I'll be off the tracks and as free as my friend the horse!" So the next day the little train began to pick up speed miles before the curve. His friends were astonished at how fast the little train steamed by. They watched with amazement as the little train reached the curve at full speed and jumped free of the tracks. "I'm free" thought the little train as he plowed into the field next to the tracks. But before he could blow his whistle he was stuck. He churned his wheels. He tried to go backwards. But he didn't move an inch. "I'm not free!" he cried. "I'm stuck!" His friend the horse came over to the little train. "You silly train, what were you thinking?" asked the horse. "I wanted to be free like you," said the train. "But I discovered that the only way to be free is to stay on the tracks!" "Of course," said the horse. "Absolutely," said the duck. "We're only free when we play by the rules." Most of us are just like the little train. We get the idea that happiness comes when we can do whatever we want. But just like the train, when we ignore the rules - when we disobey God - we get stuck. Are you off the track and stuck in sin? God cares about people who are stuck in sin. He gives people a way to get unstuck and back on track. It is called forgiveness - which is made possible because of Jesus Christ. When you honestly and humbly admit your sin to God and ask Him to help you get back on track, you can know that He does listen and He will help - He will scoop you up out of the mud and set you firmly back on His track. So if you are stuck in your sin and perhaps maybe even wonder how you ever got so far off track, may you be reminded today that you have a Heavenly Father who loves and cares about you and wants to help you get unstuck and back on track. He doesn't care whether you are a few inches from the track or many miles. He just wants you to come to Him and repent of your sins. "Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up." (James 4:7-10 NKJV) May God richly bless you as you strive to stay on the track. May God give you the strength, through submission to Him, to resist the devil's temptations to leave the track. And may God grant you the wisdom to learn from your past mistakes and continually grow in your knowledge of Him. -<>- "Most of the verses written about praise in God's Word were voiced by people faced with crushing heartaches, injustice, treachery, slander, and scores of other difficult situations." - Joni Eareckson Tada , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' >From Bad to Worse (by Alan Smith) Have you ever have one of those days when, no matter how hard you try, things just seem to go from bad to worse? The story is told of two cowboys who were working cattle one day. One of them discovered he was in trouble when a wild bull, with his head down and nostrils flaring, came charging toward him. The cowboy saw a deep hole in the ground and quickly jumped in it. As soon as the bull passed over him, he jumped out of the hole. The bull, madder than ever, came charging back again, and the cowboy jumped back down into the hole. When the bull passed, the cowboy jumped out of the hole again. He did this several times. Finally, the other cowboy, who was watching it all from a distance yelled out, "Why don't you just stay in the hole?" The cowboy yelled back, "I would, but there's a bear in the hole!" Maybe some of you feel like every day is like that! If ever there was someone who must have felt that way, it was the apostle Paul, though. Listen to him describing his life as a Christian: "From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness..." (2 Cor. 11:24-27) Sounds like a man who ought to be miserable, doesn't it? I mean, how much can one man take? How much worse can it possibly get? It convicts me to read through that list as I think of the minor problems in my life that I allow to create a dark cloud over my life. If I had to deal with the problems on Paul's list on a daily basis, then I'd really have reason to moan and whine, "Why, me Lord? Why does life have to be so hard?" The funny thing is, though, that wasn't Paul's reaction at all. He didn't list all those problems to garner sympathy. In fact, he finishes out this section by writing: "Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake....." (2 Cor. 12:10). Taking pleasure in distresses? When is the last time you took pleasure in locking your keys in your car? When is the last time you took pleasure in running your cell phone through the washing machine (don't laugh! I actually did that this week)? When is the last time you took pleasure is hearing the news that you're getting laid off, the biopsy came back positive, or there was a terrible auto accident? The "pleasure" in such things is not the ability to laugh and joke. The "pleasure" is found in the last half of 2 Cor 12:10, "...For when I am weak, then I am strong." Everything that happens to me in life is a reminder that I am not in control, but I am a child of the One who is. It is a reminder that I don't have the power to fix everything that breaks in life, but I serve the one who does have that power. It is reminder that I sometimes don't know how I'm going to have the strength to cope, but I rest in the arms of the One who has promised to be there with me no matter what. And it is during those moments when life throws its worst at me that I feel closest to God. "Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong." (2 Cor. 12:10) Whatever trials you are facing this day, may you find your strength in God. Have a great day!
