Then, out of the blue, came two loud thuds above our bedroom window, followed by the noise of laughter and people running away down our street. We both jumped out of bed and rushed outside, unsure of what had caused the two thuds or what damage I could expect to see. The silence of the night was broken by the distant sound of people laughing and at that moment I was of a mind to chase after them, however, running barefoot on the road in the dark is not a very wise thing to do. I could hear dripping noises on the driveway and the flood light above our garage helped me to identify just what had happened. Our home had been the victim of an egg bombing! Being faced with the prospect of cleaning up this sticky mess in the early hours of the morning was not a pleasing thought. I decided that it was too late so I just waited for morning. Early the next morning with a bucket of warm water and scrubbing brush in hand, I was now ready to wash off what was now two dry yellowish, egg grit impregnated, patches above our front bedroom windows. My task was made even more challenging by the two large canvas awnings which protect our bedroom windows from the heat and glare of the afternoon sun. My annoyance with the late night pranksters was again building to the level of the night before. After retracting each of the awnings, I climbed the ladder to clean up the first patch of egg stain and then move the ladder to clean the second patch. As I climbed the ladder for the second time, I noticed that the glass in a small window just under the roof line was very badly cracked. On closer inspection the crack ran around over half of the outer edge of the window pane. As the awning protected the window, it was clear to me that the damage had not been caused by the egg bombing. As I carefully placed my hand on the glass, I discovered that the pane of glass was very loose and had the window been closed with any force, it would have most likely shattered and the glass dropped to the driveway below. Just a few feet away, we have a basketball hoop and on most days of the week there are up to six young people who play in the immediate area, including both my sons. My thoughts immediately turned to what could have happened if the broken glass in the window had gone undetected for much longer and then suddenly shattered. The likelihood of my two sons and their friends being seriously injured was extremely high. After quickly washing the remaining egg stain off the front wall and with the help of Tom, my youngest son, I got to work with some heavy duty masking tape and secured the cracked window as best I could. Within 24 hours the cracked window had been replaced and all was back to normal, except for the small bits of egg shell I kept finding on the front drive way and stuck to our garage doors. Over the next few days, I realized that had our home not been bombarded by those eggs late on that Saturday night, I may not have discovered the broken window pane before it shattered and came down all over our drive way. Even though it had been an annoyance at the time, the broken eggs and the stains were cleaned up very quickly. However, the pain that could have been caused by the shattering of glass would have never gone away. The cold shudder that ran down my spine when I first discovered the cracked window and the thought about the consequences of someone being seriously injured or even killed, made me realize just how very lucky we had been. Frequently in life, the things that happen to us may have a negative impact and cause some form of pain, sadness, discomfort or personal aggravation. It is often said that we should not "sweat the small stuff" and always look for the positive outcome or the silver lining in those dark clouds of the current circumstance, even though at the time that is not always an easy thing to do. My personal experience with the egg bombing on that Saturday evening reminded me that in most cases there is always a flip side to everything that happens to us and that often the flip side can provide a positive outcome or an even greater benefit, if not now, then at some time in the future. From now on whenever I see or break an egg, I will think of the egg bombing incident and say a thank you to those late night pranksters. Equally, I will always be reminded of Jean-Paul Sartre's quote: "What is important is not what happens to us, but how we respond to what happens to us' -- Keith Ready ___________________________________________ Keith is from Australia and is a business consultant whose speciality is working with his clients to improve top and bottom line business performance in a measurable way, through people. Kerry Doyal) "Testing, testing. One, two, three, testing" Ever helped with a sound check? Jesus endured people's "sound checks" - people trying to see if He was doctrinally "sound". In truth, they assumed He was unsound & wanted to trip Him up, expose Him. Two examples from Matthew 22: "Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words." (vs. 15) "That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question." (vs. 23) Questions asked with biases & assumed answers are lies. We pretend to seek truth while we really want to make a statement or embarrass the one we ask. All-wise Jesus can use evil questions to teach. After enduring & exposing two other phony truth-seekers, Jesus teaches us the greatest commandments in response to another foolish & futile entrapping enquirer. "Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." (Matt. 22:34-40 - NIV) Quoting Deuteronomy 6:5 & Leviticus 19:18, Jesus answered [in a way most unexpected]. He often does. Making us even more accountable. God's Greatest Commandment, His Top Priority: Love Him fully, with all you are and all youse gots. Commandment #2: Love others, just like you already fiercely love yourself. Do this & you will fulfill all the Law. Love for God & others is the heart, the essence of the Law. Be done with your evasive questions. Repent of convenient confusions. God is abundantly clear in His expectations of us: Love Him Love others Aren't we glad we asked? -<>- , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' >The Right Reason (By Greg Laurie) [edited] During His earthly ministry, Jesus faced the problem of people who would follow Him for the wrong reasons. He was constantly challenging them to count the cost and to make sure that their motives were right. He wants us all to follow Him, but He wants us to do it for the right reasons. To truly come to know God, I must come on His terms and not my own. I must do it His way and not mine. It is not for me to pick and choose the commandments in the Bible that personally appeal to me or the attributes that I personally find interesting or appealing. It is for me to live life God's way or not to follow Christ at all. It is clear that there are many today who do not follow Him for the right reasons. Jesus taught that there would be those on judgment day who thought they were believers but really were not. In Matthew 7:21, Jesus makes this radical statement, "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven." If you are primarily interested in what is cool or what is hip or what is socially acceptable, I need to tell you right now that following Jesus Christ probably won't work into your plans. But if you are interested in what is right and what is the best way to spend your life, and if you are interested in the hope of heaven and a life with meaning, then there are no other options to choose from. --- ...Sweet ones! One liked the King James Version because of its simple, beautiful English. Another liked the American Revised Version best because it is more literal and came nearer to the original Hebrew and Greek. Still another liked Moffat's translation because of its up-to-date vocabulary. The fourth minister was silent. when asked to express his opinion, he replied, "I like my mother's translation best." The other three expressed surprise. They did not know that his mother had translated the Bible. But he assured them, "She translated it into life, every day of her life, and it was the most convincing translation I ever saw." --Author Unknown -<>- |\___/| / \ | /\__/| ||\ <.><.> | _ > ) \ /---- | -\/ / \ Artist Unknown >THE PROCESS OF TEMPTATION Many people act like there's no defense against temptation. With the first hint of desire, they immediately throw their hands up and give in. These people fail to realize temptation is a process. And processes can be short-circuited at any stage. Temptation usually begins in the mind, the source of an active fantasy life. The human mind has the capacity to create entire exchanges and experiences out of nothing. Through fantasy, we can enjoy something without ever bringing it into "the real world." So, people sometimes think if it isn't "real," then it's perfectly harmless. But that's not true. Fantasy leads to a downward spiral of enslavement. Over time, it becomes boring, and the need for more gratifying fulfillment builds. Ultimately, our thoughts are so wrapped around temptation that it seems impossible to think of anything else. At that point, the desire holds our minds captive. And when our lives become perfectly focused on anything other than God, we're trapped. Because the process of temptation starts in the mind, it can be difficult to escape. No matter where we go or what we do, we'll never be able to outrun our minds! But we can disrupt the process by filling our minds with God's Word. As you continually feed your imagination a hearty diet of Scripture, the Word will go to work against your fantasies. The Bible is powerful. Trust it to set you free from the burden of temptation. by Dr Charles Stanley. -<>- o o o o o \_O_/ \ __\ \ / ejm97 ~ \ ~ >Beware of the Barrenness of a Busy Life I have read how one church leader, whom I will call Jack, had a hobby raising pigeons. On one occasion a church member who was returning from a hunting trip stopped by Jack's place and found him playing with one of his birds and gently corrected him for wasting his time. Jack, noticing his friend's hunting bow, said that the string was loose whereupon the man replied, "Yes, I always loosen the string of my bow when it's not in use. If it stayed tight, it would lose its resilience and fail me in the hunt." "And I am now relaxing the bow of my mind," said Jack, "so that I may be better able to shoot the arrows of divine truth." Work is important. We need to eat and we need to take care of our family, but over-busyness can be an affliction. Without sufficient rest and relaxation we will eventually lose our health and not be able to work efficiently. And without taking time to nurture and be nurtured in loving relationships, life becomes empty and meaningless. We need to follow the advice of Jesus when he said to his disciples, "Come apart and rest a while." Or as somebody else put it, "Come apart and rest a while before you come apart." -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment: Attitude Is Everything 4! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/attitude4.html The Hippo And Tortoise http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/hippo.html Amazing Dog Houses http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/doghouses.html Dog Day Afternoon http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/dogday.html Road Train Trucks http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/roadtrain.html Tinian Island http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/tinian.html Northern Lights Over Teepees http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/teepees.html Book Sculpture Art http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/bookart.html Kinkade - Painter Of Light! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/kinkade.html Thank You Lord! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/thanks.html Bible: Our Valuable Anchor! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/BibleStudy/ouranchor.html Think Positive! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/positive.html Playing With Words http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/wordplay.html -<>- >From Our Friend PatDeE :) He sent us one we have here... Proverbs 22:9 (NKJV) I woke up at 5 a.m., hit my snooze button, dragged myself out of my warm sheets and started my normal-every-Tuesday-morning-routine. I drove to Starbucks, swapped the typical weather jokes with my favorite barista, ordered my grande coffee and bagel, and walked out the glass door. What wasn't routine was the scraggly teenage boy I ran into on my way to my truck. He was asking for something. Though I didn't clearly hear him, I assumed it was money. I told him I was sorry but I didn't have any, and continued on. He didn't ask again and he didn't pester me. But something in my head did. Did he ask for money or food? Quickly, I spun around and asked, "Do you need food?" His reply was so innocent and affirmative. I held out my goodie bag. "Here ya go, a toasted bagel with cream cheese made just for you." He smiled so big, I thought his lip ring was gonna pop out. I didn't think anything of it until I got in the truck and started pulling away. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the boy peeling open the cream cheese, carefully and joyfully, like it was Christmas morning. On my drive to the office, I wept like a broken-hearted mother. I didn't know this boy. Had no idea what kind of trouble or circumstances got him to the streets, but I did know he was someone's son. And if my son were out on the streets, asking for food at 6:30 in the morning, I'd want that busy-looking girl to stop and give him her bagel. Almost a month later, my mother forwarded me an email she had received from a woman in her Bible study. It read: "Hi Alma, Viola told me she read Julianna's blog which talked about giving a hungry teenage boy her bagel. Viola wondered if it was my son Kyle because of the lip ring Julianna mentioned. I was overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude for her compassion. He was hungry and she gave him something to eat. I have attached a picture of Kyle to show Julianna to see if he is the one she fed that morning. If not, I know there is another mother out there that would be very grateful for her compassion if she knew." I scrolled down to see the face of the boy and gasped as my eyes instantly filled with tears. It was him! The boy had a name and it was Kyle. But more than that, he had a mother. And now she knew someone had taken care of her son, even if it was just a small meal. We are not all called to mission fields far away. We are not all called to pastor a church or lead a women's Bible study. However there is one thing we are all called to do as God's people: we're all called to love - to stop, to be aware of the hurting around us, and to have compassion. We are called to share our bread with the poor. The Lord asks us to care. He calls us to be on the lookout for those who need our time and kindness. And yes, our bagel and cream cheese too. "Dear Lord, give me Your heart of compassion and Your eyes to see the needs of others around me. Break my heart today, for the things that break Yours and show me how You can use me to make it right. No matter how big or small. In Jesus Christ's Name, Amen." SUBSCRIBE INFO Want to receive a Christian inspirational item AND great clean humor in an email to you each day of the week? Coming from the south, I found the people in Illinois to be generally standoffish and somewhat uncaring -- hardly the type of people I would have as true friends. Nonetheless, we settled into life in Romeoville, Illinois, just north of Joliet. My immediate family had never before had to face a situation that involved serious illness or the risk of losing a life. That changed in late March 2007, when my wife went to the hospital for tests to investigate issues with her sight and hearing. The CT scan revealed anomalies in her brain, so the hospital sent her for an MRI. The MRI verified that there was a brain tumor. The immediate shock of such an event on your life is indescribable. We were numb. How dare something like this turn our life upside down? How do we explain this to our three children -- a boy of 13 and twin daughters age 10? Fortunately, the tumor was of a type that was treatable with surgery. My wife spent 8 days in the critical care unit to bring down the swelling in her brain, following which the tumor was successfully removed with surgery. But what has amazed me is the concern and support that we received from our Illinois friends. My assumptions have been proven spectacularly wrong in the past month. While my wife was hospitalized, I tried to manage the house and our three children on my own. Without exception, our friends offered their support to take our children to scouts, dance class, or whatever they could do to give me time to support my wife. They wanted to help give my children a semblance of a normal life while their mother was away. Meals can be difficult when your family spends most of the evening at the hospital supporting a sick family member. Yet I don't think we missed one meal, because our caring friends brought us more food than we could eat. My wife is a teacher at the local high school. Her peers took up a collection, twice, to help us get through the immediate cash flow issues that come up during these tough times. The overwhelming support from close friends, acquaintances, and even strangers, disproves my initial assumption about the people we see every day. They are caring and supportive, and bring to mind the best attributes of our humanity. It has been said that true friends can be hard to find. They may just be waiting for the opportunity to step up and reveal themselves. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: >THE FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY ___ _..._ .'.--' '----.` '. _..._ / o`\ .' `'` '. __.' / -. \ | | | | { /.--\ \/ \ jgs `\, /_ `\ `\ \\ '. Seth looked himself over and said, "Nope, I only just have two!" .-. _ __ ` )`'-,`\ .-''``.-' _.-''-. _.' `'--._.' ,-' / `\ _`'--'` .' '._ _`- .--. .--. They passed a big pink gorilla balloon which was being used for advertising and they all remarked about it. Ataiya commented, "I like that big girl-rilla but do they have boy-rillas, too?" A few months ago Eileen was hospitalized with aterial fibrillation, which is a condition that causes the heart to race. When Eileen came home the next day, her 5-year-old granddaughter came over and asked if her heart was still "blinking." She said, "You know Nanny, if your heart stops blinking you will die." -- Eileen Upshaw of San Antonio, Texas / , /\ \|/ /\ |\\_;=._//| \." It was the beginning of Kristin's second year of T-ball and Eileen went with her to practice. Kristin had always been very excited when it was time for a game or practice and was quite good at it, except on this particular day she had been less than enthusiastic. Eileen asked her if she was feeling alright, and she said "yes." Eileen then asked her what was wrong because she knew that she could have done better. Kristin replied, "Well, Nanny, my head knows what to do, but my legs just won't listen" ========================================================== >-->From Our Friend LouiseA :) _, .--. (Author Unknown) Today I stood at my window and cursed the pouring rain, Today a desperate farmer prayed for his fields of grain. My weekend plans are ruined, it almost makes me cry While the farmer lifts his arms and blesses the clouded sky. The alarm went off on Monday and I cursed my work routine, Next door a laid off mechanic feels the empty pockets of his jeans. I can't wait for my vacation, some time to take for me, He doesn't know tonight how he'll feed his family. I cursed my leaky roof and the grass I need to mow, A homeless man downtown checks for change in the telephone. I need a new car, mine is getting really old, He huddles in a doorway, seeking shelter from the cold. With blessings I'm surrounded, the rain, a job, a home, Though my eyes are often blinded by the things I think I own. 1 Thes. 5:18: "Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."
