Not even one person. However, they were all there, and in a strange way, glad they were. It was the waiting room of the Neuro Trauma Intensive Care Unit (NTICU) at Memorial Hermann Hospital, one of only two "Level One Trauma Hospitals" in Houston, Texas. (Memorial Hermann Hospital is the site of this summer's ABC medical drama entitled Houston Medical.) When a person is critically injured -- when one's life is hanging in the balance due to some traumatic event -- the family should always attempt to see to it that its injured loved one goes to a Level One Trauma Unit, if it's possible. The families in the waiting room of the NTICU almost always appear to be petrified because they know, at any moment, a physician might enter the unit and tell them, "I am very sorry. We tried everything possible, however..." The first few days, as a rule, the families keep to themselves. However, as time passes by, the families usually get to know each other -- they share the joy when there is good news for a family, and they also share their sorrow when there is poor news for a family. The Unit's many families become a "support group" for each other. I have seen it often. As one of the social workers for the hospital, I understand the dynamics of hope and the importance of support. I have seen families volunteer to take a family from out-of-town to their homes so that they could rest and shower. I have also seen strangers pray for the recovery of someone whom they did not even know 24 hours earlier. There are many "miraculous" stories about the families in the NTICU. Unfortunately, there are many times when there is not "a happy ending." On one occasion, a young man was severely hurt and suffered a traumatic brain Injury and was rushed to our hospital. For days, his prognosis was in doubt. His mother was always in the waiting room and I am sure she experienced a roller coaster of emotions, and of course, she breathed a huge sigh of relief when the doctors gave her reason to hope. Then she saw another mother in the waiting room whose daughter had not been given that hopeful prognosis. The daughter, she was told by the doctors, would probably soon pass away as a result of the severe injuries that she had sustained in a car accident. The two mothers were soon linked together -- strangers joined forever by a universal magnet -- motherly pain. They became very close, supporting each other in both good and bad times. Ironically, the predictions for the two mothers were eventually reversed. The young man who was supposed to survive, unfortunately passed away, while the girl who was supposed to die is now making progress in Florida, in her home. Families in the waiting room can eventually develop very close relationships and begin to care for each other. For example, there were two patients -- one elderly gentleman and the other a teenager -- who had been in the Unit for quite some time. Their families got to know each other, and became close. The parents of the teenager were always at the hospital, night and day. But, one night, the teenager's mother returned to her home while his father remained in the waiting room. The next morning she returned to the hospital and said to the wife of the elderly patient, who regularly remained at the hospital night and day, "I was worried about you all night." The elderly woman responded, "I figured you were worried because last night I WAS SLEEPING WITH YOUR HUSBAND IN THE WAITING ROOM AND I WOULDN'T HAVE MISSED IT FOR THE WORLD!" Everyone burst out in deep laughter. Humor can be a great coping mechanism. Yes, life can be very difficult. However, it can also be tempered if one has a support system to help and assist during those strenuous and exacting moments. Regardless of the suffering or hardship she encountered, when she looked inside her heart she found the strength she needed . . . just in time. God provides for His children and He gives the grace we need when we need it. Not before we need it, but when we need it. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth. He doesn't make grownups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way He doesn't have to take up His valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers. God's second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times beside bedtime. God doesn't have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. Because He hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in His ears, unless He has thought of a way to turn it off. God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn't go wasting His time by going over your mom and dad's head asking for something they said you couldn't have. Atheists are people who don't believe in God. I don't think there are any in my town. At least there aren't any who come to our church. Jesus is God's Son. He used to do all the hard work, like walking on water and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn't want to learn about God. They finally got tired of Him preaching to them and they crucified Him. But He was good and kind, like His father, and He told His father that they didn't know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said O.K. His dad (God) appreciated everything that He had done and all His hard work on earth so He told Him He didn't have to go out on the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So He did. And now He helps His dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones He can take care of Himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary, only more important. You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time. You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there's anybody you want to make happy, it's God! Don't skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong. And besides the sun doesn't come out at the beach until noon anyway. If you don't believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can't go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He's around you when you're scared, in the dark or when you can't swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids. But...you shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and He can take me back anytime He pleases. His wife said she was very tired and had a lot of work to do that night, so she could not help him to shorten the pants that night. Then the man asked his daughter. His daughter apologized for not able to do it that night because she had agreed to go dancing with her boyfriend "Ah well!" The man thought and decided he could wear his old trousers to the reunion. Later that night, his mother thought to herself, "My son has been very nice to me. I'll just help him to shorten his pants before going to rest." So she shortened the pants by 10cm. Then his wife finished her work and thought," My husband knows I am always very busy and seldom asked me to help him. I would oblige him today." So she shortened the man's pants by another 10cm. His daughter came home from dancing, and thought, "Papa loves me very much and when I declined to shorten his pants, he was not angry at all! I would help him to shorten his pants." So she shortened her daddy's pants yet another 10cm. On the next day, the three ladies told the man that his pants were shortened. He tried them on and found that his pants had become shorter by 30cm! His reaction: He laughed heartily, and said, "I must wear this pair of pants to show my schoolmates that my mum, my wife and my daughter are such loving people." At the dinner, his old classmates were very envious of his loving family. His mother, wife and daughter were very happy to learn about his classmates' reaction. William Holmes McGuffey is the author of the McGuffey Reader, which was used for over 100 years in our public schools, with over 125 million copies sold, until it was stopped in 1963. Of the first 108 universities founded in America, 106 were distinctly Christian, including the first, Harvard University, chartered in 1636. Dave By Bill Walker wildbill6807@yahoo.com Other day I had a reason to stop at the police station. I had lost the tag on the front of the clunker. I was told had to report it missing in action, before I could get a replacement. So I was going by the cops hang out when there is a donut coffee break calling them. While I was waiting for a cop to talk to, I looked around. On one wall was pictures of certain years of the members of Beatrice fine up standing cops. I took note of one such year. I knew each one in the frame as a friend. Friends of years gone by, so long ago. I thought of each one, and how I knew them. The little funny things, and sometimes not funny things that happened. Some is still around, retired now, while some is no longer here. I thought of each one, but there was one that is no longer here among the living that brought a tear or two to my eyes. I gave him his last ride alive. I hadn't seen Dave in some time. He took a job for a company running the school buses. His was the running of the operation. His path and mine just stopped crossing. He also moved to the little city of Pickrell, that is just 10 miles north of B Town. Dave was a kind of fellow one can not forget if you ever ran into him. He was one of those that always looked on the bright side of things, would leave you with a grin. You just liked the guy. Maybe that is why when the chance came to change jobs he went for it. I don't know. All I know is I lost touch with him.. Days turned to weeks, weeks to years. I would hear something now and then about him, but that was about it. One evening we got a call to go to Pickrell, someone needed a ride to the hospital. It was told to us no rush, a man just had to go to the hospital. We found the house, quite a few cars parked out front. Walked in with the cot and I took a look at this OLD man. He looked like a old fellow of at least 100 years old, and in a very bad shape. All worn out look, like on the last block of life. I said to one of the young fellows about needing some information. . Name and so on. this young fellow had called me by name, I told him I was at a loss, he said. "oh you remember me I am one of Dave Hadleys kids." He went on to say,, This was his dad, Dave Hadley. I about died right there. Dave my friend of years before, now he looked like this.. I felt so sorry, all the years gone by, and I had lost touch. Cancer had taken another one. I gave my old friend his last ride alive. He died that night. I guess it goes with out saying, one never knows when you will see someone again. Your worked together for a while, then your path took you away. That to be the last time you see them in good health. Yes looking at that frame of pictures brought back memories of many now gone on. These five words play a great part in the end. It makes no difference what you have, or how little you have. You deal with these five words every day. From the day you bounced into this world, till the day you drop out. I started out thinking I would use these five words about the Bible. We could you know. May wind up on that note. We also can use them for every day life. So I will do a little of both. That is the Bible and every day life. HOPE: Anything you do, you have a hope it will work. There must be a reason for you doing something. You have hopes the day will be a good one. I hear that so much any more. "Have a good day." Do you need a bad day? You hope today will be a good day From the day one of your life to the very last day, there is that hope. As long as you breath, there is hope. When you stop, there is none. The doctor can C.P.R. you forever. As long as your not breathing, there is little if any hope. CHARITY: The world also runs on that. Even the very rich depends on charity. You see if you stop and think about it. If the poorer crowd got together, they could take the very rich and powerful down a peg or two. History is full of that. Remember the French up starts taking down the King and Queen. I do. I remember the poor starving for a loaf of bread. The Queen said. "They have no bread, that is a shame, let them eat cake." How about later times? The people of Russia was in the same fix in and before World War One. I know maybe this is far out. It still is something to do with charity. We live by charity of others. You can be mean to others, no charity there. You can be kind, it is a form of charity. The Queen could have said, "They need bread King, open the store house." That would have been charity. The mob could have said, let the King and Queen live, don't lop of their head. That too would have been charity. LOVE: I have been told by more then one of the Dollies, there is different kinds of love. I thought there was one. Guess I'm wrong. Dollies love to get a gift. Your an angel. Some will be happy with a GrandMa Fruit Cake. Others tell you no more of those things. I guess one loved fruit cake, the other sees no love at all. I know some say they love the car, the house, the ring they had planted on little pinkie. I even remember one falling in love with a silly looking frock one evening. Just had to have it. I guess there is different kinds of love. I was thinking yesterday about Tinker. I remember his love. I could turn the A/C on. He would walk to an air vent. Pile down, I got a look and to me it seem like he had a grin and the look of love in his eyes. I wonder was it me he loved for turning on the air, or was it the cool air. I think I know. I have seen many acts of love. One is when you help someone in need of help. Yes I call that some kind of love. Love for your brother or sister in this walk of life. You made their day better, and you felt good about it. You married the one you call husband or wife. There must have been a bit of love at that time. I hoped it grew into a never ending love for one another. This other kind of thing called same s##, I don't think much of that. I happen to be a boy, looking for a walking talking Dollie. Of course I hear some Dollies never shut off the talking, about all you get to say after they get the ring, is . "Yes Dear, No Dear." And God help you if you get messed up, and say the wrong yes or no at times. And for goodness sake never say the wrong name. I know all about that bone head deal, first hand. So much for love. FAITH You put you trust in something or someone. That is faith. I have trust, faith that I can do something. You have the same. You have faith and trust your team will win. That is till the score is 62 to 24. Your team is the one on low end, and have 30 seconds to play in the game. You see your coach standing on the sidelines ripping his cap off and throwing it on the ground, saying words of no print here, and crying Gator tears. I just had to get that in. Sorry Gator. We deal in trust and faith every day. We trust, and have faith in the doctor, else we find one that we do. We have trust and faith in the old clunker. it will start and get us down the road. When it bulks, we shop for repairs, or get a new clunker. We get kind of like the old cat. Darn it all. The good times is over, we walk away looking for a better deal. We lost trust and faith in that old bucket of bolts. We have faith something is going to happen, to make our day a good day. GRACE: Last, sure not the least. Maybe the most important one word of the lot. I often wonder, about this word. What is grace? Are you graced because you have fine clothes, food, car, boat, plane, train, motor home, a wife, a couple girl friends on the side. I put train in as a laugh. That could be next thing one must have. Are you living in grace because you have little? I know and have heard of many who have little and they are happy. They have a happy home, may be a poor home, They enjoy things they do have. They live a simple life. Maybe they never get to the other side of the mountain. But their happy with the side their on. Maybe it is by grace they have what they have.. They have something called happy times. While the other fellow has to worry about wife finding out about the two girl friends. Maybe she has a small problem too. She tramping also.. They have no happy times other then what looks great to others. So maybe it is the ones on the lower end of things that has the most blessings and grace. Maybe in the end they keep their heads. Someday they too will eat at the big table, with the master. I remember reading about a man who asked for a lot. He asked, never got what he asked for. His last lines was he was most richly blessed. I think that is called GRACE. I have read about a man who also had very little while here on earth. He was/is the most important man to ever walk on this earth. God's HOPE, CHARITY, LOVE, FAITH, and GRACE sent him to do a job. You see I believe God has hope yet for you and I. He also has much in the way of charity for you and I. He still has love for you and I. He has faith that you and I will do as he has asked us to do. Grace, again last, sure not least. It all boils down to by his grace. We have what we need. It takes all of those words. HOPE, CHARITY, LOVE, FAITH, and GRACE in this life. The firestorm resulted in the evacuation of 90,000 people for six weeks, burning out hundreds of homes and devastating lives. As the fires were active, one local resident, "Fred", had spent several weeks out on a work-train for the railroad. His upcoming birthday present to himself was a mortgage-burning; his home would be paid off one week before his birthday. His returning work-train passed down the valley where he lived — and he saw his home and possessions go up in flames as he rode by. In Canada, Emergency Social Services is part of our Provincial Emergency Program. ESS and PEP are volunteers who work their regular jobs, *then* work 8-12 hours volunteering. Evacuees are encouraged to register with ESS. They don't have to accept aid but it allows family members to contact them. As requested, Fred registered. We recommended he return daily to check for messages and we offered aid every day, which he refused. He said, "I'm staying with friends, others need it more." After two weeks Fred learned that ESS would help his hosts with food. He thought he could help them out. The clerk he talked to thought he was trying to abuse the system, refused him, and hinted that he was dishonest. This was too much for Fred and he lost his temper. He yelled at the clerk. Security detained him and called the RCMP. I found him surrounded by four security people and very upset. As a PEP director, I sent the security away to find out what was going on. Remember, this man is an evacuated railroad worker. He has tattoos, long hair and is still wearing worn but clean work clothes. The stress was too much, and Fred was on the edge of breaking down. I took him outside, found him a tree to lean against, gave him a bottle of water and told him to stay put for a minute. I went inside and found an ESS supervisor. She gathered forms and I took her to Fred outside. She took charge, sitting with him almost an hour. She put her arm around him, talked, and listened to him. She filled out forms and had him sign them. He left with a handful of forms for food, toiletries and clothing and his head held high (if a bit dazed). What she did was far outside her normal duties. She did what had to be done in a no-nonsense, git ‘er done kind of way. A month after the last evacuee went home I met Fred again on the street. He stopped and thanked me. He said it was the worst time of his life but it was when he saw the best in people. Police were also en route. Dispatch relayed that the baby was being used to extort money from the mother. On arrival we indeed saw a baby being waved out a window by his feet three stories up. As we ran up the stairs my partner said, "Distract the guy for a minute, I'll get the baby." A crying 5-year-old child opened the door, "He's hurting my brother!" I entered, speaking as calmly as I could. Wild-eyed, the assailant said, "Don't touch me, cop, or I smash the brat." I said, "I'm a firefighter. I only want to check the baby." Suddenly a pair of hands appeared and grabbed the child. From the apartment's kitchen, my driver had gone out the window and reached across to grab the child -- three stories up. WildEyes looked at his now-empty hands, charged past me and escaped. Breathing raggedly, I surveyed a desperately bleak room. One bare bulb, broken furniture, an empty drawer for a crib. My partner came in holding the baby very close to himself, saying over and over, "He's all right. He's all right." We gathered up mother and two other children. Downstairs we met an army of police officers. As we loaded up the family, the officers took the perpetrator's description. With the madman's picture etched into my brain, I described him from top to bottom. After transporting the family to children's hospital, we took another call. When the officers caught the assailant he fought, bruised two officers, and ended up needed stitches. Back at the station, a senior firefighter asked me for every detail. When I finished, he said, "You can't fix the world but you can mend parts of it," and got our shift together. "We have a family to care for," he said. "It's Christmas eve! Most stores are closed," we chorused. The captain replied, "I think this shift could pull it off on Christmas day." No one argued further. Groups went to the grocery, a toy store, and a child care supply store. Between us, we assembled Christmas for a family that needed everything. Next item, the only unpurchased Christmas tree left from our department's tree sale fund-raiser. The crew shortened that poor scraggly thing and trimmed it to a decent shape. A 24-hour pharmacy yielded lights and ornaments. We called the hospital and found the baby's evaluation would take several more hours; the family would be sent home in the morning. At 11:00 p.m. we were finally ready. But back at the apartment building, the apartment door had a double-cylinder jimmy-proof lock. We laddered the apartment, and hauled all the supplies up the ladder. Two different police officers came by with more items.
