I see him down there all the time," said a young teenage boy to his friend. "I bet he wears the key to the locker around his neck. I saw him pull out a purple bag several times when he was sitting on top of the heater vent down by the Florida Theater." "If he has a million dollars why would he be living on the street?" his friend asked. "He's crazy and he's all messed up in the head. That's why." I had been standing in the alleyway, for more than two hours, waiting for a chance to steal a new pair of shoes from the shoe store located across the street from the alley. Once again I had runaway from the orphanage; as tomorrow was my ninth birthday I was going to steal something new as a birthday present. The old man had passed me several times going in and out of the alley. He was very old, walked all hunched over, and always walked with his arms wrapped around himself. "BOO!" said someone from behind me. Being almost dark, I jumped and quickly turned around just as the old man passed me. He winked, smiled at me and then headed back out into the street. All at once, the two young teens grabbed the old man and began dragging him back into the alley. He let out a horrible scream as the two of them began to beat him with their fists. Within seconds the old man was down on the ground and the two boys began kicking him as hard as they could. Rolling up into a ball the old man continued to yell. I was less than twenty yards from the man, yet I could hardly hear him the sound was so muffled. "Give us the key, old man," one of the boys kept yelling. "It's my key to life. It's the key to life. Leave it alone, Please," the old man kept screaming. The two boys just kept beating him. As I ran out of the alley, I saw a Chinese man running back into the restaurant. I ran inside and began yelling at the man to call the police. He stood there waving his hand at me. "No involve here. No involve," he yelled at me. I ran back out of the restaurant, crossed the street and into the shoe store. "Call the police," I screamed at a woman, near the back of the store. I ran outside and back into the alley where the two boys were now wrestling with the old man. "Give me that key, old man," one of the boys was still yelling. I ran past them and hid behind several large trash cans located about half way down the alley. In the distance, I could hear sirens heading in our direction. The two boys jumped off the old man and began running out of the alley. Several minutes later, people began walking into the alley. Two men walked up to the old man, who now lay motionless on the ground. "I think he's dead," said a heavyset man, as he knelt down to look at the old homeless fellow. "He's dead, alright," stated another man beside him. "He's not breathing," he continued. Several minutes later, police cars came from every direction. There were flashing red lights everywhere. "Call an ambulance," yelled one of the policemen to one of the other officers, at the end of the alley. The police began to question people in the surrounding area to see if they could find out what had happened. Being a runaway, one well known by the police department, I was not about to come out from hiding. The woman from the shoe store told the policeman that two boys were beating on the old man and kept yelling at him to give them their keys back. "I think this is what they were after," said the officer, as he reach down and tried to remove the purple bag from the dead man's grip. I stood; my body tightly pressed against the cold brick wall which ran the entire length of the alley. I watched as the policeman continued to try and remove the small purple sack from the old man's hands. The small gold rope finally broke as the officer pulled it free from the homeless man's grasp. Spreading open the top of the bag, he turned on his flashlight and looked inside. The officer stood there slowly shaking his head, back and forth. Dropping hands to his side, he called for the other officers to come and take a look. I had hoped that the policeman would take the "key of life" out of the bag so that I could see what it looked like. One at a time, the officers looked into the bag and as they did each one slowly shook their heads. I saw the ambulance lights turn into the alley so I moved behind the large trash cans and continued hiding from view. Several attendants, dressed in white, quickly took a small bed from the back of the vehicle and rolled it over to the dead man. I turned away because I did not want to see them pick up the old man. Dead people's arms swinging freely about always seemed to bother me. Several minutes later, the ambulance left and the officers continued to talk for ten or fifteen more minutes. As they returned to their individual cars and began to pull away, the officer holding the small purple bag tossed it into one of the three small trash cans, sitting behind the Chinese restaurant. When all was quiet, I slowly came out from behind the large trash cans and walked over to the back of the restaurant. Looking from can to can, I finally saw the small, purple pouch with the golden rope. I reached down, picked up the pouch and just stood there. It felt strange to know that someone who was now dead was alive an hour before and was holding this bag in his hands. Holding up the bag with my left hand, I began feeling the bottom of the bag with my right hand. Sure enough in the corner of the bag was the "key to life." I wonder why the police did not keep this key if it is truly the "key to life,' I thought to myself. Slowly, I turned the bag upside down causing the "key of life" fell into the palm of my right hand. I tightly closed my fingers around the key and carefully moved down the alleyway and into the streetlight. Opening my hand, I looked down to view the "key to life." What I saw absolutely amazed me. I too had once owned a "key to life." I had found it on a dirty, wooden floor in a small country grocery store several years before. It had been attached to a small can of meat the grocery man told me they called Spam. Roger Dean Kiser, Sr. trampolineone@earthlink.net Write Roger and share your thoughts with him on his story! "The ants' normal diet is plain, often to the point of austerity, but they love unusual and exotic tidbits and will go to any lengths to satisfy this craving. For example, the Golden-Haired beetle exudes from the base of its golden hairs some secretion which ants find irresistible. So it is allowed to do anything it likes, even lay its own eggs, which soon turn to grubs. So besotted and obsessed do the worker ants become that they feed the beetle with food intended for their own infants, and even with food reserved for the queen. "Worse, much worse, they allow the beetle to kill their infants and eat them. They even kill their own infants themselves and feed them to this stranger. The beetle repays them with a generous allowance of the secretion they crave…. The end is not immediate. The colony may last two years more, but the end is certain. "How like Satan is this picture. Promising the 'pleasures of sin' and then enslaving us with our own cravings. The 'dead-end' may not be obvious at first, but it is inevitable." The good news is that while the end result of sin is eternal death, which is eternal separation from God the author of all love and life, the gift of God is both forgiveness and eternal life. Both are available for all who believe and ask. For help be sure to read “How to Be Sure You’re a Real Christian" at: http://www.actsweb.org/christian/know_god01.php Suggested prayer: "Dear God, help me always to remember that sin always has its consequences and that I will always reap what I sow--even if it is eventually! And I thank You that You have provided an escape from sin's ultimate consequences--eternal death and separation from You--by giving Jesus to die in my place on the cross. Thank You for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus's name, amen." 1. Linda didn't know that you don't travel to Whitehorse alone in a rundown Honda Civic, so she set off where only four-wheel drives normally venture. The first evening she found a room in the mountains near a summit and asked for a 5 A.M. wake-up call so she could get an early start. She couldn't understand why the clerk looked surprised at that request, but as she awoke to early-morning fog shrouding the mountain tops, she understood. Not wanting to look foolish, she got up and went to breakfast. Two truckers invited Linda to join them, and since the place was so small, she felt obliged. "Where are you headed?" one of the truckers asked. "Whitehorse," she answered. "In that little Civic?" one of them said. "No way! This pass is DANGEROUS in weather like this." "Well, I'm determined to try," was Linda's gutsy, if not very informed, response. "Then I guess we're just going to have to hug you," the trucker suggested. Linda drew back. "There's no way I'm going to let you touch me!" she said angrily. "Not like THAT!" the truckers chuckled. "We'll put one truck in front of you and one in the rear. In that way, we'll get you through the mountains." All that foggy morning Linda followed the two red dots (tail lights) in front, and had the reassurance of a big escort behind her as they made their way safely through the mountains. Caught in the fog in our dangerous passage through life, we need to be "hugged," says Chuck Swindoll. With fellow Christians who know the way and can lead safely ahead of us, and with others behind, gently encouraging us along, we, too, can pass safely.2 Suggested prayer, "Dear God, please give me loving friends to support me through life's journey, and help me to be such a friend to other fellow strugglers. We dispensed ice for bumps and bruises, Band-Aids for cuts, and liberal doses of sympathy and hugs. As principal, my office was right next door to the clinic, so I often dropped in to lend a hand and help out with the hugs. I knew that for some kids, mine might be the only one they got all day. One morning I was putting a Band-Aid on a little girl's scraped knee. Her blonde hair was matted, and I noticed that she was shivering in her thin little sleeveless blouse. I found her a warm sweatshirt and helped her pull it on. "Thanks for taking care of me," she whispered as she climbed into my lap and snuggled up against me. It wasn't long after that when I ran across an unfamiliar lump under my arm. Cancer, an aggressively spreading kind, had already invaded thirteen of my lymph nodes. I pondered whether or not to tell the students about my diagnosis. The word breast seemed so hard to say out loud to them, and the word cancer seemed so frightening. When it became evident that the children were going to find out one way or another, either the straight scoop from me or possibly a garbled version from someone else, I decided to tell them myself. It wasn't easy to get the words out, but the empathy and concern I saw in their faces as I explained it to them told me I had made the right decision. When I gave them a chance to ask questions, they mostly wanted to know how they could help. I told them that what I would like best would be their letters, pictures and prayers. I stood by the gym door as the children solemnly filed out. My little blonde friend darted out of line and threw herself into my arms. Then she stepped back to look up into my face. "Don't be afraid, Dr. Perry," she said earnestly, "I know you'll be back because now it's our turn to take care of you." No one could have ever done a better job. The kids sent me off to my first chemotherapy session with a hilarious book of nausea remedies that they had written. A video of every class in the school singing get-well songs accompanied me to the next chemotherapy appointment. By the third visit, the nurses were waiting at the door to find out what I would bring next. It was a delicate music box that played "I Will Always Love You." Even when I went into isolation at the hospital for a bone marrow transplant, the letters and pictures kept coming until they covered every wall of my room. Then the kids traced their hands onto colored paper, cut them out and glued them together to make a freestanding rainbow of helping hands. "I feel like I've stepped into Disneyland every time I walk into this room," my doctor laughed. That was even before the six-foot apple blossom tree arrived adorned with messages written on paper apples from the students and teachers. What healing comfort I found in being surrounded by these tokens of their caring. At long last I was well enough to return to work. As I headed up the road to the school, I was suddenly overcome by doubts. What if the kids have forgotten all about me? I wondered, What if they don't want a skinny bald principal? What if . . . I caught sight of the school marquee as I rounded the bend. "Welcome Back, Dr. Perry," it read. As I drew closer, everywhere I looked were pink ribbons - ribbons in the windows, tied on the doorknobs, even up in the trees. The children and staff wore pink ribbons, too. My blonde buddy was first in line to greet me. "You're back, Dr. Perry, you're back!" she called. "See, I told you we'd take care of you!" As I hugged her tight, in the back of my mind I faintly heard my music box playing . . . "I will always love you." -<>- . | . \ | / `. \ ' / .' `. .-*""*-. .' Completed in May, 1880, it has a center span of 1710 feet. It was then the longest cantilever bridge in the world. At that time, it was one of the engineering wonders of the world. The day for the completion and dedication of the bridge arrived. For many long months, two separate work crews had been working toward each other from opposite sides of the bay. Now the time had come when the two huge steel structures would be connected in the middle of the bay. Everyone who could find a way to come was there for the great day. Countless boats bobbed on the water, people by the thousands lined the shores, dignitaries from various parts of the world came together to witness the joining together of the two sections of the bridge. Then came the giant shock! the two sections of the bridge would not come together. Officials began to squirm in embarrassment and humiliation as the steel workers sweated futilely under the overcast sky. But there was still a gap that refused to be closed. The bridge builders tried everything they could think of: tugboats tugged, cables strained, tractors pulled, cranes lifted, but the gap remained. They rechecked the blueprints. Everything seemed to be correct. So why the gap? Despair set in as they ran out of options. Their spirits were as low as the clouds hanging in the sky. Suddenly something happened! The warm sun broke through the overcast. The warm rays beamed down on the cold metal of the bridge. As the officials watched, an apparent miracle took place before their eyes. The gap between the two sections of the bridge began to gradually close. Warmed by the sun, the two long sections of the bridge began to inch toward each other high above the bay. In a while, the two sections came flush together. Hurriedly, the work crews put in the bolts and the bridge was finally fastened together. An enormous cheer went up along with a great sigh of relief. In all of our individual lives, there are tangled times when things just won't fit together. We sweat, struggle, and try everything humanly possible, but we still can't make things come together. The sky is overcast and our spirits droop. Feelings of futility, anguish, even panic, set in. Then the warmth of God's love breaks through the gloom and - miraculously - things begin to fit together. Behind the overcast skies . . . He has been there all the time!" There is only one pretty child in the world... and every mother has it." - Chinese Proverb. Mothers of teens know why some animals eat their young. Children are natural mimics who act like their parents, despite every effort to teach them good manners. Children will soon forget your presents. They will always remember your presence. Children seldom misquote you. In fact, they usually repeat word for word what you shouldn't have said. The main purpose of holding children's parties is to remind yourself that there are children more awful than your own. Grandchildren are God's reward for not killing your kids. "Who are these kids and why are they calling me Mom?" Insanity is hereditary. You get it from your kids. You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can never fool mom. I love to give homemade gifts. Which one of my kids do you want? A child's greatest period of growth is the month after you've purchased new school clothes. Anyone who says "Easy as taking candy from a baby" has never tried it. Children: You spend the first 2 years of their life teaching them to walk and talk. Then you spend the next 16 years telling them to sit down and shut-up. The best inheritance parents can give their children is a few minutes of their time each day. --- ...LOL! Thanks LouiseAu! Rioters of today are what happens when parents spoil the child of yesterday. Biblical Source: Proverbs 29: 15 -- The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame. A related verse is: Proverbs 13: 24 -- He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth [instructs] him betimes. Literal translation according to Biblical usage: Proverbs 13: 24 -- He that loves his child will diligently seek to instruct him. The modern saying delivers the general gist of the Proverbs. A child who is not reproved and corrected will not develop a sense of what is right and wrong. The second Proverb even states that a child is not loved if he is not disciplined. This of course does not mean that children should be beaten, but they do need to learn the limits of acceptable behavior. My son came home from school one day, with a silly grin on his face, He thought he was smarter than me, his Mom, and could put me in my place. HE SAID: Guess what I learned in Civics 2, that's taught by Mr. Wright, It's about the laws of the land today, its called THE CHILDREN'S BILL OF RIGHTS. IT SAID: I don't have to clean my room, I don't have to cut my hair. Nobody can tell me what to eat, My freedom of speech is guaranteed. Its my choice of what I read, or watch on TV. I have freedom of religion, and regardless of what you say, I don't have to ask your God for help --- I DON'T HAVE TO PRAY. I can wear an earring in my ear, And, if I want, can pierce my nose. It's my choice if I so desire, to tattoo Satan's numbers across my toes. AND if you try to spank me, I will charge you with the crime, and I can back up all my charges, with the marks on my behind. HE SAID: Don't ever touch me, this body is only for my use, not for your hugs and kisses and stuff, that's just another form of child abuse. HE CONTINUED WITH: Don't fill my head with morals, like your mama did to you, That's what's called mind control, And it's illegal too! Mom, I have these children's rights, you can't do a thing to me, I can call Children's Services, better known as C. S. D. MY TURN!!!! My very first impression was, to toss this boy out the door, But here was a chance to teach him a lesson, for once and ever more. I took my time and mulled it over, I couldn't let this go. This kid of mine didn't realize, that he was messing with a pro! AND AWAY WE GO............. The next day we went shopping, and in spite of every plea, I didn't buy him 501s or shirts designed by Nike. I had called and talked to C. S. D., they said they didn't care, if I bought him K-Mart shoes, or a pair of Nike Airs. AND THEN: I canceled his appointment to test his driving skills, I'd probably be dead by now, if only looks could kill! I SAID: There's no time to stop and eat, or pick up stuff to munch, I think you should follow C. S. D.'s advice, And make yourself a sack lunch. So, what if you are too hungry, to wait 'til dinner time? Well, we're having liver and onions, Cause it's a favorite dish of mine. He ASKED: Can we stop to get a movie, so I can watch it on the VCR? Absolutely not! I sold the TV in your room and bought new tires for my car. I also rented out your room, you really don't need a bed. C.S.D. says all that's required of me is to put a roof over your head. I only have to buy your clothes, and the food that you must eat, The money you used to get for an allowance, will buy me something neat. No more eating after we shop, no more joking along the way, I too have a BILL OF RIGHTS, that goes into effect today! What's the matter, are you crying? Are you down on your knees? Why are you asking God for help?......... WHY NOT CALL THE C.S.D.? It was rated PG-13. However, their father had established a family rule that they could not attend PG-13- or R-rated movies. The teens interviewed friends and even some members of their family's church to find out what was offensive in the movie. The teens made a list of pros and cons about the movie to use to convince their dad that they should be allowed to see it. The cons were that it contained ONLY three swear words, the ONLY violence was a building exploding (and you see that on TV all the time, they said), and you actually did not "see" the couple in the movie having s%x - it was just implied s%x, off camera. The pros were that it was a popular movie - a blockbuster. Everyone was seeing it. If the teens saw the movie then they would not feel left out when their friends discussed it. The movie contained a good story and plot. It had some great adventure and suspense in it. There were some fantastic special effects in this movie. The movie's stars were some of the most talented actors in Hollywood. It probably would be nominated for several awards. Many of the members of their Christian church had even seen the movie and said it wasn't "very bad". Therefore, since there were more pros than cons, the teens said they were asking their father to reconsider his position on just this ONE movie and let them have permission to go see it. The father looked at the list and thought for a few minutes. He said he could tell his children had spent some time and thought on their request. He asked if he could have a day to think about it before making his decision. The teens were thrilled, thinking, "Now we've got him! Our argument is too good! Dad can't turn us down!" So, they happily agreed to let him have a day to think about their request. The next evening the father called in his three teenagers, who were smiling smugly, into the living room. There on the coffee table he had placed a plate of brownies. The teens were puzzled. The father told his children he had thought about their request and had decided that if they would eat a brownie then he would let them go to the movie. But, just like the movie, the brownies had some pros and cons. The pros were that they were made with the finest chocolate and other good ingredients. They had the added special effect of yummy walnuts in them. The brownies were moist and fresh, with wonderful chocolate frosting on top. He had made these fantastic brownies using an award-winning recipe. And, best of all, the brownies had been made lovingly by the hand of their own father. The brownies only had one con. He had included a little bit of a special ingredient. The brownies also contained just a little bit of dog poop. But he had mixed the dough well - they probably would not even be able to taste the dog poop, and he had baked it at 350 degrees so any bacteria or germs from the dog poop had probably been destroyed. Therefore, if any of his children could stand to eat the brownies which included just a "little bit of crap," and not be effected by it, then he knew they would also be able to see the movie which had "just a little bit of smut" and not be affected. Of course, none of the teens would eat the brownies, and the smug smiles had left their faces. Only Dad was smiling smugly as they left the room. Now when his teenagers ask permission to do something he is opposed to, the father just asks, "Would you like me to whip up a batch of my special brownies?" ========================================================== >-->From LaughAndLift: hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses& & hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&hu &hugs&kisses s&h es&hugs&kisses&hugs&kiss gs&kisse es&h sses&hugs&kisses&hugs&k s&kiss ses& isses&hugs&kisses&hugs &kiss s&kis sses kisses&hugs&kisses&hu ugs&kiss s&ki isse &kisses&hugs&kisses&h &hugs&kiss gs&k kiss s&kisses&hugs&kisses& es&hugs&kis ugs& &kis gs&kisses&hugs&kisses sses&hugs&k hugs s&ki ugs&kisses&hugs&kisse kisses&hugs &hug gs&k hugs&kisses&hugs&kiss s&kisses&hu s&hu ugs& &hugs&kisses&hugs&kis ugs&kisses& es&h hugs s&hugs&kisses&hugs& i hugs&kisse ses& &hug es&hugs&kisses&hug k hugs&kis sses s&hu ses&hugs&kisses&h & hugs& isse es&h sses&hugs&kisse s& &kiss s gs&ki hugs&kis s ugs&kisse sses&hugs&ki i ses&h k k sses& & &kis gs&kisses&hug isses&hugs s&hugs&kisse s s&kis gs&kisses&h &kisses&hug es&hugs&kisses g gs&ki ugs&kisses& s&kisses&hu ses&hugs&kisses u ugs&ki ugs&kisse ugs&kisses&h sses&hugs&kisses h hugs&k hugs&kiss hugs&kisses& isses&h gs&kisses& &hugs&k hugs&ki s&hugs&kisses kisses ugs&kisses s&hugs& &hugs&k es&hugs&kisse hugs&kisse es&hugs& &hugs sses&hugs&kiss s&kiss &hugs&kiss ses&hugs s&hug isses&hugs&kis gs&kiss s&hugs&kis sses&hugs s&h &kisses&hugs&ki ugs&kisses&hugs& i isses&hug es& s&kisses&hugs&k hugs&kisses&hug k kisses&hug e ugs&kisses&hugs& &hugs&kisses&h & &kisses&hu hugs&kisses&hugs s&hugs&kisse s s&kisses&hu s&hugs&kisses g gs&kisses&h es&hugs&kisse u ugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&hugs&kisses&h -- Matt Ryan "How incomprehensible is the love of God! I am feeling the strain of stress. My body is agitated by worry and fear. I confess to you my inability to handle it alone. I surrender myself to you. Fill me with your pure peace, power and patience. I don't want to have a divided mind fragmented from anxiety. Forgive my angers rooted in fear and petulant self-will. Help me act on the inspiration You give me rather than stifling Your love and guidance. Help me take charge of my tongue so that it becomes an instrument of healing. Make me a communicator of your love and forgiveness as I cheer others on to their best. I commit myself to you, dear God: help me to always know and do Your Will. Guide me according to your Will so I may be the best I can be for You and my beloved Lord Jesus Christ. Set me free from the tyranny of acquisitiveness and the lust of seeking my security in things rather than in my relationship with you. I long to be the person you created me to be and not anyone else. Forgive me when I take my signals of success from others and not you. All our games would stop, our bikes were put away, as we went home to supper, it was the end of our day of play. Mom would greet us at the door, Dad was already at the table, Mom said" Scrub those hands, get all the dirt off if you're able." With our hands still damp, we would all take our place, quietly we'd bow our heads, as Dad would offer grace. The table held bowls of food, we slowly passed them around, our appetites were at full peak, wanting the bounty we'd found. When all the plates were full, we could all start to eat, wondering what Mom had hid away, to be this supper's treat. The dessert was always kept secret, Mom would never let us know, it might be pie, it might be cake, or cinnamon, sugar sprinkled crust. After supper was over, the dishes washed and dried, we would all do our home work, our grades were a source of pride. When all the school books were closed, it was then time for family fun. We played cards and board games, this time enjoyed by everyone. Later it would be tv time, we'd watch show after show, "I love Lucy" was a favorite, so was "The Lone Ranger and Tonto". All too soon it was bedtime, we'd slowly get up and go, each walking to their room, leaving the tv's glow. We'd get into our pajamas, then kneel beside our beds, Mom and Dad silently watched, as we each bowed our heads. Thanking God for family, food, friends, rising to our feet after "Amen" was said. A hug and a kiss from Mom and Dad, and we crawled into our safe warm bed. I remember drifting off to sleep, a smile on my young face, into a night of childhood dreams, where the world was a magical place.
