With caller ID I knew it couldn't be good news from my mother. "Diane, your sister has been life-flighted to Scranton. There's been an accident. I received a call from the hospital. Right now she's being operated on. That's all I know." "I'm on my way, mom." The drive was 45 minutes, and we had no idea what caused the injury. Was it a car accident? No information was released. Waiting patiently for hours in the waiting room, a brain surgeon came out and gave us the grim news. Her prognosis was she was brain dead, with little hope of survival. A passing motorist saw her lying on the road and called 911. I remembered seeing her lying there in a coma, with life support allowing her chest to rise with each breath. I remembered watching my watching mother reaching for her daughter's hand, and sobbing at the sight of her swollen bandaged head. Joni died at age 45, an unsung hero who donated her organs in spite of the cruel and calculated attempts of a cover-up from a hit-and-run driver. My sister was a giver, even in her death. Eventually police were able to gather forensic evidence which led the man to turn himself in weeks later. Naturally any blood alcohol could not be traced. Before the actual sentencing we received word from a married gentleman with one child who received my sister's heart. The transplant went well and Joni's heart had immediate function. He was very thankful for the opportunity to still have time to spend with his family. Her bone marrow and tissue along with her kidneys were able to help countless others. It was up to me to face the judge, and the man who left her on the road to die. I remember my final words to the court were something like this: "I conclude your honor with an imploring plea from my family that you will consider the maximum penalty on behalf of my sister and our family. It cost my sister her all -- we believe it should cost him his all." Being the oldest child I don't know what was more heartbreaking. Losing my sister, or watching the devastating effects it was having on my parents. The judge told me what the state sentencing guidelines required him to hand down. I had already done my homework and was prepared for the slap on his wrist. He faced a one year prison sentence for the murder of my sister! The reporters who followed me out of the courtroom asked if I was satisfied. My statement was, "I believed the judge did all he could do because of state legislation. I don't believe the sentence was enough, but I know he did the best he could." I had been researching night after night. Something was wrong with Pennsylvania hit-and-run laws. There was a loop hole that was allowing people to get away with murder! When I stumbled across the hit-and-run laws of all 50 states, my crusade began. Armed with information and statistics, I was prepared to wage war, and phoned WILK talk show host Sue Henry and was soon invited as a guest speaker the day after my sister's killer was sentenced. A few days later the local news headlines read: "CRUSADE to change PA. Hit-and-run law gets lawmakers' attention. Sister's death moves Velikis to close loophole." Periodic contact and updates continued. We are still waiting for a bill to be passed. The the ball is in motion. It still needs to be presented before the house, but God used me and my sister as a vessel. Finally, now I have peace. The two things we did have in common were writing, and I know had it been me lying on the road that day, she'd have been trying to do something -- anything -- to make this world a better place. -- Diane Velikis __________________________________________________ Diane is a Pennsylvania licensed realtor and has worked diligently to have Pennsylvania's hit-and-run laws changed. She caught the ear of her state representative, Phyllis Mundy, who wrote up a bill. In introducing the bill, State Rep. Mundy stated, "A drunk driver who hits someone and takes off, and is later tried and convicted on a hit-and-run charge, receives a lesser punishment than he would had he stayed at the scene to render assistance or simply faced up to what he did. This loophole makes no sense from a legal standpoint, and it certainly makes no sense to victims and their families." =========================================================== >-->From Our Friend Linda :) ,"=-. / _),`'". I encountered a mean, barking dog. He had the look that said, if I live long enough, sooner or later, I'm going to bite you! As is my habit, I tried to entice the dog to let me pet him, to which he of course, wanted no part, and became even more vicious. As I came close enough to see his teeth, I snatched him off his feet, and wrapped my arms completely around him, thus disabling his means of attack. As I examined him, he had this look of distress, almost desperation in his eyes, and it was then I noticed, the huge thorn he had in his front paw. I decided I must remove the thorn at once....I put him down, and imagine my surprise to find he wasn't near the snarling, mean dog I had imagined....He now was a dancing, prancing, full of love puppy-dog, who seemingly had no care in the world. Thus is the sin in our lives. It becomes a thorn is our paws, which if allowed to, consumes our very being, and eventually, we become barking dogs. Christ says He can remove the sin, if we allow it. Many times we fight the cause, many times we fight the solution, but when it's finally removed, how sweet it is to know His grace. --- ...A good story! Thanks LouiseA! This reminds us that we can not always know the heart of who we are dealing with. We need to give people the benefit of the doubt and don't be so quick to judge them until we have walked in their shoes. It is God's will that we as Christians... 2 Tim.4: [2] Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. At the same time we have to do so with our spiritual ears on so we can know if it is a wise thing to witness here or there or to this person or that person. Jesus teaches us... Matt.10: [16] Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. We have to do the best we can to know who we are dealing with and then leave it up to God and ask for wisdom to know what is best for us to do. God always knows what is best and God through Jesus Christ, always has your back! You just have to have your spiritual ears on and trust God so you don't do something foolish and then have to have God bail you out from your fool hearty venture. Remember, it is not wise to temp God and do things you know is unsafe because you know God through Jesus Christ will have your back. You must use wisdom. Jesus taught us this when he was temped by the devil... Matt.4: [5] Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, [6] And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. [7] Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Here, the bible teaches that the devil knows God's Word and has no problem using it to try and deceive us into doing something against God. We have to know the Word of God well enough to know when the devil uses it incorrectly to snare us into his evil trap. We don't do things that we know is not safe just to prove God or to make God protect us or save us from harms way. That would be like your child running up some steps and then jumping off of them expecting you to catch him when you did not tell him to do this. There's a 50/50 chance you will be able to catch him. That's not odds we like our children to be under and neither does God. He wants us to use wisdom and... 1Pet.5: [8] Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: It doesn't say that we are to invoke or tease or taunt the devil into harming us so God can rescue us. Not even close! 'YOUR adversary' tells you right there that this is your battle and God isn't always going to be there to protect you! That's why we are told to be sober and vigilant! But God gave you the power to be able protect yourself... John 14: [12] Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. 1 John 4: [4] Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. Our power is our internal spirit - that awesome God In Christ In Us: Col.1 [27] To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery[secret] among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Phil.4 [13] I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. We use our internal spirit to let God give us wisdom and strength. ========================================================== >-->From Archives InspiredBuffalo: , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' >THE TOP TEN PREDICTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR 1. He was trying to find out what the churches were really like. He said, "I sat near the front. After the service, I walked slowly to the rear, then returned to the front and went back to the foyer using another aisle. I smiled and was neatly dressed. I asked one person to direct me to a specific place: a fellowship hall, pastor's study, etc. I remained for coffee if served. I used a scale to rate the reception I received. I awarded points on the following basis: 10 for a smile from a worshiper 10 for a greeting from someone sitting nearby 100 for an exchange of names 200 for an invitation to have coffee 200 for an invitation to return 1000 for an introduction to another worshiper 2000 for an invitation to meet the pastor On this scale, eleven of the eighteen churches earned fewer than 100 points. Five actually received less than 20. The nearly deserted street adjoined a park frequented by "street people"; a place that looks superficially safe but gives you an uneasy feeling. Suddenly two middle-aged men stepped out from behind a bush and confronted me. One stood directly in front of me and the other stepped between me and the road, effectively boxing me in. The man in front of me grinned -- I smelled alcohol -- and asked me to come into the park "for a talk". I was uncomfortable, but, taught to be polite, explained I had to catch a bus home and my mother would worry if I was late. I tried to step around him, but he and his friend blocked me and moved closer. I stepped back, and the second man moved behind me. Neither tried to touch me, but the first man kept urging me to "be friendly". Terrified, I wondered whether I could move quickly enough to dodge around them and run back to the dentist's office. Then I heard a cheerful shout, "Hello, Sue!" and saw a young man crossing the road towards us. Since my name isn't Sue, I thought he was hailing a friend and would ignore us. To my delirious relief, he headed straight towards us, speaking in a loud, friendly voice, "I thought it was you, how are you? Haven't seen you in ages, what're you doing now?" He gave my two tormentors a cheery smile, neatly stepped between them and took my arm. I finally found enough presence of mind to join in the charade, stammering "Hi, Chris" (my brother's name) and smiling up in what I hoped was a natural manner. The two men gave a conciliatory wave and vanished into the park wordlessly. My rescuer urged me down the street, as I gasped my thanks. "Sorry to intrude, but you looked like you needed help." He tried to reassure me, saying they were probably harmless drunks who wouldn't have dragged me away against my will, and wouldn't have attacked me on the street in broad daylight. I appreciated his efforts, but I couldn't stop shaking. He introduced himself and stayed with me until my bus arrived, chattering about harmless topics, though I wasn't in a state to be much of a conversationalist. He waved as the bus bore me away, then turned and crossed the street again, presumably to resume his own interrupted business. This young man saw a girl in trouble and risked his own safety to help. He also was quick-witted enough to intervene in a way seemingly natural, and non-threatening to my tormentors -- thus minimising the risk the situation might turn violent. "Chris", if you're reading, please know I've been grateful ever since, although I couldn't express it well then. To this day, 30 years later, I vividly remember your common sense, courage and kindness. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Our Friend Geniann :) ____ ___ ,' __ ``.._..'' `. `.`. ``-.___..-. : ,---..____________________>/ _,'_ | `-:._,:_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|.:SSt:.:|-|(/ | _.' ) ____ '-' ; ( `-'' __``-' / ``-....-'' ``-..-'' Glen Frey was the Eagles' guitarist, singer, songwriter and co-founder. His passing comes just a week after music fans suffered another great loss, iconic musician and trendsetter David Bowie. http://eagles.com/news/266763 In a nice article in the Washington Business Journal, Managing Editor Robert J. Terry described Frey's leadership of the Eagles as: ... the unquestioned CEO of the most successful American rock band ever, a visionary, funny, at times ruthless leader with much to teach any chief executive in any line of work. After having watched the outstanding documentary "History of the Eagles," last year when it aired on Showtime, I completely agree with Terry's observation. In his article, Terry points out six key leadership traits that Glenn Frey possessed that helped him steer the band through the many years of lows, highs, internal conflict, personnel changes, obstacles and rewards. Here's a short list of some of Frey's best leadership characteristics: 1) Ability to explain things clearly and succinctly. He was essentially the leader of the group. And he never hesitated to make clear decisions about things such as the direction of the band and its projects. 2) An eye for talent. Frey's selection of uber-manager Irving Azoff, lead guitarist Joe Walsh and bassist Timothy B. Schmit showed that he knew what personnel would work well with the existing band members. Of course, the group had its share of BIG disagreements and problems. But strong talent wasn't one of them. 3) A sense of humor. Frey's affinity for humor came through in the documentary, as he often joked with his audience and fellow bandmates. While few CEOs are known for their sense of humor, it can be a difficult thing working for someone without one. So, if you are a leader, keep in mind that a good laugh now and then helps morale and fosters camaraderie in the workplace. 4) Demand of high standards. A good CEO always gets the most out of his/her employees. Yet to get the best, you have to demand the best. That's what Frey demanded of his bandmates. Terry mentions an incident Frey had with bassist and vocalist Randy Meisner. One night Meisner refused to sing the hit "Take it to the Limit" out of fear he couldn't hit the high note at the end of the song. Frey told him to sing it anyway. Meisner quit the band shortly after, and Frey replaced him with Schmit. 5) Strong ego, but ability to keep it in check. Frey was a great singer, guitarist and songwriter. But he knew that his skills weren't the right fit for certain things. Over time, most of the lead vocal duties in the band were taken on by drummer Don Henley. Frey was good with that, because he realized how great Henley was, and that this would be the best thing for the band. That kind of humility and delegation ability is a rare quality in any CEO. 6) Strong work ethic. Nothing great in life comes without some serious hard work. Frey discovered this early in his music career by observing what he described in the documentary as "Elbow grease. Time. Thought. Persistence." This he learned by observing his friend and fellow music great Jackson Browne as he set about writing a song. The key to Browne's genius, as Frey surmised, was his strong work ethic, and the ability to keep at a song until it sounded great. Finally, although the passing of people that influenced our lives and our culture can be very sad, the lessons they leave us via the lives they led will remain forever. If we are wise enough to learn from them, we'll all be much better off. Brad Hoppmann Publisher Uncommon Wisdom Daily --- ...A great legend and good info! On another occasion, Mrs. Claus said, "O.K., everyone that has broken toys, please bring them back, for Santa hired some new elves this year, and they must be repaired, so I'll give them to Santa to take back to the North Pole." Children rapidly brought them over and exchanges were made. Questions came rapidly about how many people work for Santa and if he fires them. Mrs. Claus wears a wreath with lights on top of her hair, and so often children will ask, "Why do you have blinking lights in your hair?" She replies, "So that Santa can find me in the dark wintry nights as he flies over the rooftops." Santa wasn't on time at one event, and the children were restless and parents as well, so Mrs. Claus told them to listen closely for coming from the North Pole to Florida, the reindeer need more water and Santa has to find them air conditioning. (Must think quickly when children are around.) Many times the children just want to keep Mrs. Claus, and ask that she come home with them. --Joyously in Christmas Mrs. Claus, also know as Bonnie King-Moran of Homestead, Florida .:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:. . . . . . . . _\/ \/_ . . _\/\/_ . . _\_\_\/\/_/_/_ . . / /_/\/\_\ \ . . _/\/\_ . . /\ /\ . . When Breann, 5, came to spend the night with her grandmother, Zelma, she got a pencil and paper and said, "Grandma, write my name." Zelma did. Breann said, "Grandma, you do not make an R like that. Try again." Zelma wrote the R again and Breann shook her head and said, "Let me have your hand." Then Breann guided Zelma to make an R the way she does. Breann looked at Zelma and said, "Good job, Grandma. Now let's practice the other letters!" -- Zelma Feltner of Kendallville, Indiana Later Breann and Zelma were playing the Memory Game. Zelma said, "Wow, Breann, you are winning." Breann replied, "Grandma, when you play this game you have to think, think, think!" Imogene was waiting in a doctor's office when she noticed a little boy, about 5 years old, looking at her. Imogene asked him if he'd had a merry Christmas and he told her he had received lots of neat presents. Imogene told him she had been sick at Christmas but she was looking forward to the next day because that would be her birthday and she would be 82. He said, "Gee, you don't look a day over 81!" Imogene thanked him and he smiled as if he'd made Imogene's day -- and he had! -- Imogene Johnson of Ligonier, Indiana About 10 years ago when Shelly's little brother was about 7 he moved back to this area. She was in her recliner with her foot up while their 3-year-old twin grandchildren were visiting. Ryne found the singing stuffed animals and was pushing the buttons to hear the songs. Kayla was near Janis when one stuffed animal began to sing, "Grandma got run over by a reindeer." She looked at Janis and said, "You, Grandma?" Janis replied, "Yep, like me." Kayla began to giggle and proceeded to play that song over and over. Eventually Janis found some humor in her accident. -- Janis Sproat of Butler, Indiana When Linda's granddaughter Kaylie, 2, saw Santa with a little girl in a pretty dress sitting on his lap, Kaylie's head immediately started shaking back and forth, and she didn't have to say it. Suddenly off she went, in a sprint with her grandma trying to keep pace behind her. "Let's go Grandma!" Kaylie exclaimed, without looking back. Grandma hoping for that magical picture of Kaylie on Santa's lap yelled out, "But Kaylie, Honey, don't you want to tell Santa what you want for Christmas ?" When finally, far enough away from Santa Kaylie stopped and very sweetly said, "Grandma, Kaylie is scared. Could you tell Santa what Kaylie wants for Christmas?" Grandma said "OK, Honey, I'll tell Santa what you want for Christmas." And with that, Kaylie smiled and then wrapped her little arms around Grandma's neck and whispered, "I love you, Grandma." Who needs Santa with magic like that? -- Linda Segedy (grandma) of southeast Michigan Lisa and her family finally took down their live Christmas tree. One Saturday morning her Poppy and Gaga woke her up and told her to get dressed quickly because they were going to get happy face pancakes at IHOP. Emilynn is not a morning girl. She responded, "I don't want happy face pancakes! I want MAD face pancakes!" The waitress at IHOP was happy to oblige and she got her mad face pancakes -- making her very happy! - Marissa (Emilynn's aunt) of Ballwin, Missouri Another Emilynn story: They had been teaching Emilynn, 3, and her little sister Kamie, 2, the sign of the cross and Catholic prayers. They were practicing ALL the time. One day Emilynn's baby cousin was visiting at her house. He was toddling around and fell and bumped his head on the floor. When Marissa arrived at the door Emilynn informed her that "Justin fell and bumped his "father" (she said while touching her forehead) on the floor!" Kym, 16, was so excited to attend her sophomore homecoming dance. Her date picked her and a couple friends up and took them to a prestigious restaurant in the city. Kym ordered chicken for dinner, but was quite surprised at what showed up on her plate. She was horrified when the waiter put her plate in front of her with a half a chicken (not a boneless breast like she was familiar with). So, what did she do? She called her mom on the cell phone and said, "MOM, my chicken has bones and a wing. What do I do?" Her mom and everyone in the restaurant got a good laugh from this scene. She did eat that night. Kym, 18, was experiencing moments of "overheating." Concerned about these episodes, she made an appointment with her doctor. While in the waiting room, she read a short pamphlet about menopause. She took it with her to the exam room and when the doctor came in she promptly told him about the "overheating" and stated, "I think I have menopause!" %%%%%% %%%\__/% %%%%"""% %%c ^\^% %\ _=/ . _.'_( .:: .'`\ `._ _ _..;:::' / '._ .' \ =/ (=(:]::;:::. \__./__.``_/_/ / / ';::;:. / / ) / \ \/ / '::. / /.'`-._( \ / '. / /' `\ `` Austin, 2, was napping. Kenna, 20, received a dining room table and chairs so they went to a relative's house to pick them up. They loaded the table and Kenna was told to go look under the bed and get the leaf. So Kenna got on the floor and looked under the bed for the leaf. She couldn't find it so she was told to look in the hall closet and she still couldn't find it. Then Aunt Judy remembered the leaf was out in the storage shed. On the way to the storage shed, Kenna said "Mama, Aunt Judy has me looking for a leaf. Of course, they wanted Lynda to purchase them (and others) which she did not want to do. But she showed one of the pictures to her grandson, Jace, 7. He said, "Yes, I saw that in school."
