My then-8-year-old daughter Andrea and I were watching the Sunday night news, which included a report of the day's NFL highlights. "...and the Jets cruise past the Patriots, 34-7. Meanwhile in New Orleans..." "Daddy," Andrea interrupted, "what are patriots?" "It's a football team, honey," I replied, absently. "Sort of." "I know that," she said. "But what does it stand for?" "The way they're playing these days, not much." "Huh?" Obviously, Andrea wasn't much on sports humor. "OK," I said. "A patriot was, you know, like in the days of the Revolutionary War. People who really loved their country, like George Washington, the Minute Men and stuff." "Oh." That was that, I thought, and I returned to the football highlights until... "Daddy, what happened to the patriots?" "I don't know," I said. "A bad trade, a couple of injuries, some lousy draft picks..." "No, I mean the patriots who lived with George Washington. What happened to them?" "Well," I said, "they won the war, they established a great nation and then they all died." "Oh," Andrea said. "So patriots are kind of like dinosaurs, and they're extinct now?" I was losing ground here. But what was I supposed to say? Patriotism hasn't been high on the list of politically correct postures for a few decades. So I turned to the dictionary. A patriot, I told Andrea, is "one who loves his country and supports its authority and interests." "Oh," Andrea said. "Like the man who lives over by the school who flies his flag almost every day? He told us it's because he's proud to be an American. Is he a patriot?" "Yes," I said. "I think you could say so." "And what about Mrs. Davis?" my daughter continued. "Last week at church she was teaching us that song about America, and she was talking about the purple mountains magically and the fruity plains and she started to cry. I think she loves our country too." "That's 'purple mountains majestie' and 'fruited' plains,'" I said, "and yes, I'm sure she does." "Then she's a patriot too! And Bryan (the neighbor in the military) and Rosa (the friend who was working toward U.S. citizenship) and Chuck (the teenager who... well, I wasn't sure)." "Chuck?" I asked. "He always has a flag on his truck antenna," she explained. "I guess that qualifies him as a patriot," I said. "Everyone I know is a patriot," she said, "because everyone I know loves America!" I could have told her that there are a lot of people who would be quick to point out all of the things that are wrong about America. But then it occurred to me that maybe they complain because they care. Besides, what could be more American than criticizing the government? It's a tradition that goes back a long way -- all the way to George Washington and his fellow complaining patriots. "You're right," I said. "We're a whole country of patriots, each in our own way." "Including those guys?" she asked, gesturing toward the Patriots on the sports report. "EXCEPT those guys," I said. I heard how one man lost his pocket watch while working in one of these ice-houses. He searched diligently for it raking through all the sawdust on the floor--but without success. Fellow workers also failed to find it. A boy who wanted to know what all the fuss was about went into the ice-house, closed the door, and before long he emerged with the watch. “How did you do it?" the men asked. "I closed the door," the boy replied, "lay down with my ear in the sawdust on the floor, and kept very still. Soon I heard the watch ticking."2 Many people ask, “Does God speak to people today?" And how would I know if God spoke to me? Actually God speaks to us in a myriad of ways. But unless we stand still long enough and listen with our heart, we may never hear Him. God may not speak in an audible voice but He “speaks" very specifically through His Word, the Bible. But we need to read and study it to get His message. And God “shouts" to us through creation. As His Word, the Bible, says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world."3 God also speaks to us through various circumstances. Unfortunately, some of us don’t stop and listen until a crisis hits us and causes us to slow down and take stock of our life. Basically, however, in life we see what we want to see, we hear what we want to hear, and we pay attention to what we want to pay attention. Hearing God’s voice is a choice. If we truly want to hear it, we will. In one case, he was overcome with emotion and began to cry while making copies of all the notes of love and support he received. Seeing his pain, a young woman hugged him until he regained control. Weeks later, he was at a restaurant alone and began to cry when he thought about his wife. A waitress sat beside him and held his hand. It's that great Italian dish that has buttered noodles served in a rich, creamy cheese sauce. Unfortunately, one news magazine in an article on nutrition and our health called it a "heart attack on a plate." That may be a bit of an overstatement, but the fact is that a lot of foods do contribute to the slow shutdown of the valves that happen to carry the blood and oxygen into your heart. I love what one commercial calls it -- blood sludge. Medical people refer to the hardening of the arteries -- the process in which foods that are high in cholesterol and fat start building up hard deposits in your arteries. If this hardening in your heart is allowed to continue long enough, it is not a laughing matter. It really can threaten your life. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Crisis of a Closing Heart." Hearts can harden physically and spiritually. It can become really dangerous in the heart of any man or woman who is trying to make a difference for Jesus Christ. It was Jesus' heart that motivated all He did -- a heart that the Bible says was "moved with compassion when He saw the multitudes." He was deeply moved. He saw them the Bible says, as "threatened and helpless sheep without a shepherd." He wept over His city Jerusalem because they wouldn't come to Him and the life He wanted to give them. Paul was a model for all of us who want to serve Christ when he revealed what drove him to suffer incredible pain and sacrifice to tell people about Jesus. Our word for today from the Word of God is 2 Corinthians 5:14, "Christ's love compels us." Not long ago I was told about a Rev. Gomez who is a pastor in one of America's major cities. Often, he wouldn't come into the service until a few minutes before his message. But this one particular Sunday, it came time for the sermon and Rev. Gomez was not on the platform. A couple of church leaders went to check his office, and there he was looking out over the endless rows of apartments and houses that jammed their depressed neighborhood. And he was weeping. One of the men who had come looking for him said gently, "Pastor, I understand, you're weeping because of the great needs all around us, aren't you?" "No," the pastor told him, "I'm weeping because it doesn't move me like it used to." That is cause for weeping. This servant of God realized that something had happened to his heart. Like a person with hardening of the arteries, his heart had started to close up -- to harden. Maybe yours is, too. Like that physical hardening, it happens slowly and imperceptibly, but the longer it goes unchecked, the more dangerous it becomes. Most of us start serving the Lord with a healthy heart. We're moved by the lostness of people who don't have a Savior. We realize the life-or-death importance of getting to them with the message of Jesus. Heaven and hell are at stake. And we come into the Lord's work with a heart that's soft toward the pain and suffering and dysfunction that sin is causing in lives all around us. We ask the Lord to use us to make a difference, whatever it takes. But for some of us, that healthy heart started to harden somewhere along the way. With all the pressures, the politics, the disillusionments, the programs, the conflicts, we can no longer say that it is this burning love of Christ for the lost and hurting that drives us. What once was passion has become profession. What once was a deep affair of the heart has become an exercise of our head and our busy hands. And the joy, the fire is going out -- or gone. But the One who gave you that original piece of His heart wants to give it to you again if you'll recognize the crisis of your closing heart and tell your Master that you want His life-changing heart surgery -- to open up what the deposits of the years have closed, and to give you a new heart, throbbing with His love and His passion and His tears for the lost. MITCHAM'S PEACHES Mr. Mitcham grows the best peaches around. Almost as much fun as eating the delicious fruit is taking a drive out to the orchard in early spring. You can see acres and acres of gorgeous peach blossoms, each a promise of future fruit. I like to just sit and drink in this beautiful sight. One particular spring, I walked among the trees to take a closer look at some strange things Mr. Mitcham was doing to his peach trees. The first thing I noticed was that all the topmost branches had been cut off the trees. What a pity, I thought. Those trees were gorgeous and he has ruined them! He went to all the trouble to plant them and tend them and now he is ruining them. As I drew closer, I saw that not only had he cut off their top branches, but he had put strong metal bands around some of the branches forcing them lower. There was one more thing I noticed that was some sort of discipline for the tree. On the outermost part of some of the limbs there were tied with small styrofoam cups filled with concrete, the weight of which forced the branches down within reach. As summer approached, the orchard produced a bumper crop. The most beautiful and tastiest peaches ever! Why do you suppose that happened? Was it a coincidence? No. It was carefully planned and the plan was just as meticulously executed. The result was a great harvest of wonderful fruit! And the bonus was that the pickers did not have to spend hours on ladders reaching the highest limbs for the fruit. Meanwhile, across the way, a neighbor had a few scraggly-looking peach trees that had never been tended. They had never been pruned or fertilized or sprayed for insects. They had never known the gardener's touch, and their peaches were small, few, and not very tasty. A knee bowed and a life placed in the hands of the Master Gardener will result in His loving and wise grooming. This grooming and shaping will result in the bearing of much sweet smelling and beautiful fruit, fruit that will be of eternal significance. Kendall Evangelist J. John told me about a trip he made to India a few years ago. Shortly after he arrived, he heard about a saintly woman called Sister Theresa (not Mother Teresa) who had a powerful gift of the word of knowledge. J. John was able to meet her, and he said to her, "If you have a word for me, I would be so grateful." He said she turned around and left. He feared he had offended her. But she came back to him an hour or so later with a list of 13 items (some of which almost bowled him over they were so accurate), ending with these words, which he will never forget: "God likes your company and asks that you give Him two hours of your time every day. That's all. Goodbye." Wow! J. John took her seriously, and he has told me more than once that he was never to be the same again. What does prayer do for God? For one thing, He likes your company. I can't imagine a greater motivation for me to pray than knowing that God enjoys having me in His presence. He enjoys my company. He delights in listening to me! He doesn't get bored with my repeated requests. He doesn't moralize me if I get it wrong with what I ask for. He doesn't laugh at me if I put out silly, even impertinent requests. He never makes me feel stupid. There is no rejection, only total acceptance. It doesn't get better than that. David said: "How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you" (Ps. 139:17-18, NIV). When God speaks to us face-to-face as He did with Moses, it is impossible to say who enjoys it most—God or us. I am moved to know that God spoke to Moses face to face, "as a man speaks with his friend" (Ex. 33:11). God loved Moses' company. He loved Abraham's company, also calling him His friend (see Is. 41:8; James 2:23). What a compliment to the disciples that Jesus would say, "I have called you friends" (John 15:15). Spending time with another person develops friendship. The thought that God likes my company thrills me more than I can explain to you. And if He likes my company, He likes yours too— He is no respecter of persons (see Acts 10:34; 1 Pet. 1:17). The same blood that purchased Peter's and Paul's salvation bought yours and mine. Moreover, it is the blood that gives all of us equal access into God's presence (see Heb. 10:19). Therefore, I can put out of my mind the thought that some people are more acceptable to God than others. One's profile in church has nothing to do with being accepted by Him—or loved or enjoyed. We are all on level ground. No one is at the head of the line just because she has a higher profile in the church, has been a Christian a longer time, has been on a 40-day fast, or has fame in the world. Being a head of state gives you no leverage. As St. Augustine put it, "God loves every person as if there were no one else to love." I hate the thought of being a bore. I hate wasting people's time. I can sometimes tell by the look on their faces if they are not happy to see me. I fear rejection. And if I'm not careful, I can carry this fear of rejection right into the presence of God, assuming I am boring to Him too. Why should God care about me? Why should He listen to what I have to say? And why should He like my company? It is such a dazzling thought, that the same God who has countless billions of angels worshiping Him 60 seconds a minute, day and night, to whom the nations are but a drop in the bucket and who knows all about every leaf on every tree in the world, also welcomes my company—because I am important to Him. Indeed, I can think of no more amazing thought than this: "God loves me as much as He loves Jesus." That's right! You and I are co-heirs with Jesus (see Rom. 8:17). Jesus even prayed that we would grasp the fact that the Father loves us just as much as He loves Jesus (see John 17:26). If there's anything that will make us blush in heaven, it will be the realization of how much we were loved on this earth—but didn't appreciate it. And if we knew how much God welcomes us when we turn to Him, we would almost certainly pray more than we do. God loves our company. Adapted from Did You Think to Pray by R.T.
