I raised a couple of windows, left the back door open and headed outside. I gave my four-year-old, Wayne, a tiny rake and shovel to play with while I started on the scattered remnants of old winter vegetation. It was nice feeling the warm sun on my bare arms. I had several free hours to work in the backyard. You know how one thing leads to another? The cleared flowerbeds and grass looked so good that I started tidying the uneven edges of the walkway. Much better! But since the walkway was made of brick, there were lots of places where the new grass poked up between them. I pulled a few clumps by hand. It was harder than it looked. There wasn't enough room to get anything larger than a screwdriver between the bricks to pry out the grass. I managed to do only a couple of feet of walkway. Lightbulb moment! I got the hose, and by adjusting it to the pinpoint setting, loosened the grass clumps enough that they came out much easier. This worked great until I sprayed a spot and the cold water and mud bounced back into my face! Wayne thought that was hilarious! I continued on with the hose and screwdriver. Every once in a while, I'd get a little more bounce-back. That was ok. I was making really good progress. Nobody but my little boy could see me here in the backyard. I'd grab a quick shower afterwards and toss my muddy clothes in the washer. Wayne continued to play here and there while I worked on the walkway. Our dog, who had delivered puppies a couple of weeks before, was right beside him. After a while, Wayne went inside to use the bathroom. He wandered out later, picked up his shovel and started digging in a flowerbed. I finished the walkway, put away the tools and stepped back to gaze with satisfaction at the greatly improved view before me. I called Wayne to gather his toys so we could get cleaned up before Daddy arrived home from work. It was noticeably cooler since I stopped working. My wet clothes felt uncomfortable, especially my soggy pants, which had stretched way longer than my legs. I reached for the doorknob. It wouldn't open! I belatedly recalled my lectures to Wayne on door rules -- keep it shut, locked, etc. The little guy remembered this time, as evidenced by the tightly locked door. There was no way I'd go next door for help. I was too filthy, and Wayne didn't look much better. The open windows were too high for us to reach. "Mama, I'm cold!" Wayne looked up at me with questioning eyes. "OK. Let's go in the garage," I said. I hoped we would find an old sweater or something for him in there. The garage, about thirty feet back from the house, was divided into three rooms. One of them held the washer and dryer. At the back of the room was a large cardboard box housing the mama dog and her pups. We looked everywhere, but the only thing I could find was an old piece of pink plastic curtain. I said, "Wayne, how would you like to take a nap with the puppies?" He was delighted at the suggestion. He crawled in with the pups and I called the mama dog to get in with them. In a few minutes, the box of squirming life settled down and they were all asleep. I wrapped the plastic curtain around me like a big shawl and sat down on the floor to wait. The curtain looked ridiculous, but it was surprisingly warm. My husband, Ron, would be home in less than an hour. No problem. Soon, I heard his car in the driveway. I started outside to meet him when I caught sight of another car right behind his, so I ducked back into the garage. I'd just keep quiet until the person left. Then I heard voices coming closer. Oh, No! They were headed for the garage! What was I going to do now? The dog box was too small or, I swear, I'd burrow under the pups and cover up with the stupid curtain! I could see the confusion in Ron's eyes as he caught sight of me standing there in all my glory. At least I'd had the forethought to discard the curtain -- for all the good it did me. My well-dressed husband turned to the equally well-dressed man behind him and said, "I'd like to introduce you to my wife." I was uncharacteristically speechless for a moment, thinking things COULDN'T get any worse, when Wayne's head popped up out of the cluster of pups and he gaily shouted, "Hi Daddy! Me and Mama got locked out!" -- Barbara Hergenroder ___________________________________________ Barbara lives in central Florida. About five months after the pink curtain and pups incident, they were blessed with another son, John. Both boys are adults now. Barbara currently has a door that requires a key to lock it from the outside, so she won't be locked outside keyless again. ========================================================== >-->From Our Friend Jacinto :) _ _ ( Y ) \ / \ /^\ ) //^\\ ( // \\ ) // \\ __ // \\ |=^| // _ \\ __|= |__// (+) \\ /LLLLLLL// ~ \\ /LLLLLLL// \\ /LLLLLLL// \\ /LLLLLLL// |~[|]~| |~[|]~| \\ ^| [|] // | [|] | | [|] | \\ | [|] ^| |_[|]_| |_[|]_| |^ ___|______| | /LLLLLLLLLL|_____________________| /LLLLLLLLLLL/LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL\ /LLLLLLLLLLL/LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL\ ^||^^^^^^^^/LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL\ || |~[|]~|^^||^^^^^^^^^^||^|~[|]~|^||^^ || | [|] | || |~~~~| || | [|] | || || |_[|]_| || | [] | || |_[|]_| || ||__________|| | o| ||_________|| .'||][][][][][|| | [] | ||[][][][][||.'. ."'||[][][][][]||_-`----'-_||][][][][]||"." .(')^(.)(').( )'^@/-- -- - --\@( )'( ).(( )^(.)^ '( )^(`)'.(').( )@/-- -- - -- -\@ (.)'(.),( ).('). Fill your life with so much activity that there is no room to be still ["Be still, and know that I am God" - Ps 46:10]. When we live in the tyranny of the urgent, we can be so busy that two-way conversation with God is not a priority. 2. Completely ignore the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit speaks words of truth and comfort and enables us to grow in spiritual awareness. By slighting God's and failing to rely on Him, we short- change our ability to hear from God. 3. Don't ask God any questions. People have questions, and they will look for the answers somewhere: psychics, self-help books, friends, talk-radio shows, the internet, etc. Only God is the source of eternal Truth. He is available for our questions, toll-free, unlimited access. 4. Insist that God must conform to your comfort zone. Be so comfortable that if God did speak, it would upset your status quo. Self-satisfaction kills our hunger to hear from God. So does lack of vision that there's more beyond where we are. When we are busy perpetuating a personal agenda, we will not hear the voice of God, especially if it means change. 5. Be religious. "Religion" is characterized by tunnel vision that thinks it has all the answers. Religion does not deepen us in the grace of God. Look at the Pharisees. They were preoccupied with keeping every jot and tittle of the law. Jesus called them whited sepulchers, full of dead men's bones. They kept a form of godliness and missed God walking among them. God calls us to cultivate a living relationship in intimacy with Him at all costs. 6. Be ignorant of the warfare. We must not see only the surface of things. We are not fighting flesh and blood but unseen spiritual battles (Eph 6:12-13). Paul instructed us not to wage war on the horizontal level as the world does. The informed and armed soldier overcomes everything that sets itself up against the righteousness, peace, and joy of the kingdom of God (2 Cor 10:3-5, Rom 14:17). 7. Be so exhausted that your physical, mental, and emotional fatigue cries out to be satisfied louder than the still, small voice of God. To hear from God, we must take adequate time off to get much-needed rest and refreshment. Burned out, we are no good to ourselves or anybody else, much less to God. 8. Respond to every need as if you are the only one who can fix it. Jesus did not respond to every need. From our people-pleasing natures, it is not easy to see that every need is not our call. Our valid call is only from God, not from the pleading voices around us. 9. Tolerate unconfessed sin in your life. The psalmist said, "If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened" (Ps 66:18). Our sin and flesh must not be allowed to dominate so loudly that they drown out God. We must draw near God with a clean conscience (Heb 10:22). Follow the example of Jesus, who often slipped away from the crowds to spend time with His loving Father! --- ...Amen! "You were designed for God's pleasure. The purpose of worship is the foundation of the other four purposes." Everything you do can - and should - be an act of worship, reflecting the process of surrendering your entire life into God's hands. Here are ten habits you can build into your people as you teach them the fullness of worship: 1. Worship through prayer. We often miss this important component of our prayer life. Think about the issues you usually pray about. How much of your prayer life is about you and how much of it is about God? Without a doubt God wants us to be able to share everything that is going on in our life, but he also wants us to get to know Him better. When we affirm who God is through our prayers, we put our prayer life in proper perspective. That's exactly how Jesus taught us to pray. Look at the Lord's Prayer in the Gospel of Mathew (6: 9-13); Jesus starts the prayer off by saying, "Our Father who is in Heaven, May Your name be honored." (NLT) Jesus teaches us an important lesson with this prayer. Prayer starts with God. Consider including in your prayers a time of focused attention on who God is. 2. Get in a regular habit of reading the Bible. The Bible says that we worship God in "spirit and in truth." How can we ever worship God without a clear understanding of who He is? The truth about God is essential to worship. Pay special attention to the book of Psalms. No book in the Bible spends as much time carefully describing who God is. 3. Obey God. Rick Warren mentions in The Purpose Driven Life that we worship God when we obey Him. We all need to build the habit of obedience into our lives. Take practical steps to see that this is a part of your life. Whenever you sense God is speaking to you, make it a regular practice to respond immediately. Don't let procrastination weigh you down. If you can't do it immediately, write down whatever God has been putting on your heart, so that you can do it SOON! 4. Tithe. If you want to know what you really worship in your life, look in your checkbook. The Bible teaches us this important lesson: "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Mathew 6:21 NIV) God wants us to surrender our entire being to Him. One way to show that is by making Him Lord of our pocketbook. 5. Build deep relationships with other Christians. The Bible teaches that God designed us to live in community with other Christians. We bring God pleasure by getting to know others and being known by them. At Saddleback, the primary way we do this is through small groups. 6. Share your faith. John Piper made many of us re-look at why we share our faith when he wrote a few years ago: "Missions exists because worship doesn't." God wants every person on the planet to worship him - not because He is an egomaniac who needs our praise - but because he designed us with a deep capacity for worship, and we're meant to worship him. To paraphrase Augustine, our Creator designed us with a God-shaped hole that only he can fill. Take time this week to share your spiritual journey with someone else. Tell them how you came to faith in Christ. Don't worry about their response. Relax in the knowledge that you are playing a part in expanding God's world-wide worship. 7. Serve others. Jesus tells us that "when you did it to the least of these my brothers and sisters, you did to me!" (Matt. 25:40 NLT) When we serve one another, Jesus tells us we are really serving Him. If you don't think you have any gifts that are useful to serve, you are wrong. God made you with talents and gifts that He specifically gave you to serve others. 8. Build into your life the attitude of thankfulness. This requires looking at the world through a different set of eyes. When we look through the lens of thankfulness, we see our lives - and everything in it - as all gifts from God. Develop your own spiritual exercises each morning that help you put on a lens of thankfulness. Then begin to thank God for all of the good things in your life. 9. Begin turning over to God areas of your life that you have never committed to Him. This is the heart of worship - surrender. God won't settle for 90 percent of your life; He wants all of it. You might have been a follower of Jesus for years, but you still have areas of your life that you are holding back from Him. What are those areas? Only you know that. Two good places to look are your checkbook and your planner. Look at the areas of your life where you spend the most money and the most time. Do they honor God? Also, you need to keep your sin list short. Think back over the past month and write down all of the times you remember disobeying a clear teaching from God. Then look for patterns. If you find patterns of sin in your life, these are areas of your life you need to surrender to God. 10. Live a life of purpose. God has a reason for your existence. In fact, He has five: fellowship, discipleship, ministry, evangelism and worship. You please God when you live in step with His purposes. God doesn't want you to waste your life. You were designed for God's pleasure. The purpose of worship is the foundation of the other four purposes. Fellowship without the spirit of worship is just "hanging out." Discipleship without worship is nothing but a fruitless mental exercise. Ministry without worship is called "spinning your wheels." Evangelism without worship is a misplaced sales pitch. Worship isn't simply one area of your life; it is your life. Start right this moment by surrendering your life to God. Then spend the rest of your life learning to worship Him more fully. -Pastors.com- Tobin Perry, 2003. There is nothing inherently selfish in taking care of your self. Your own success benefits not only you, but those around you. In fact, your own success is a very good measure of how well you're serving others. Selfishness, on the other hand, is the expectation of something for nothing. Selfishness is thinking that you can take from others without providing anything of value in return. The most difficult way to get what you want is to demand it from others. The easiest and most reliable way to get what you want is by providing other people with what they want. To advance your own self interest in the most powerful and sustainable way, find a way to truly offer something of value to others. While many people struggle to find ways to take, the consistently successful people are finding ways to provide. Take care of yourself, be the best you can be, and give of yourself, in unique and valuable way, to others. And that is good. But how about starting with crossing the street and talking to your neighbor? Some people say, "I want to be in the ministry." Guess what "the ministry" is? It is service to the Lord. Jesus said, "You shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8). This is how it worked for the disciples, and that is how it works for us. It is a strategy for evangelism. They were to start in Jerusalem, where they were. Next came nearby Judea and Samaria, and then the rest of the world. Here is what God is saying, in effect: If you want to reach the world, then start with your world. When you think of going into all of the world and preaching the gospel, that is a daunting task, isn't it? But how about this? Go into all of your world and preach the gospel. I know of an interesting group of people. They are small in stature. They have a lot of energy. They have a short attention span. But they are very open to the Word of God. They are called kids. They can be found in Sunday school rooms and are in need of people to help teach them. You might be thinking, I am looking for the big call of God. But what about doing something simple? How about just sharing Jesus when you are out and about? How about starting with people that you live near? How about starting with members of your family? How about your coworkers? How about students on your campus? That is where it starts. Truly, the pressure to create the right kind of summertime environment in your home falls largely on Mom. Summer should be a time of rest, but it’s also up to us to keep things moving in a way that integrates rest with a measure of purpose. For me, it meant letting our kids have lots of time to play—building forts in the yard (or in the living room if it was raining), going on hikes, going swimming—anything that didn’t involve wasting a perfectly good day in front of the television. It also meant having some enforced quiet time, when I would read to them or send them to their rooms to spend time alone. I wanted to discipline their hearts to enjoy solitude and to help truly recharge after the fast pace of the school year. If you’re a mom who puts a lot of emphasis on structure, I’d encourage you to tone your plans back about 50 percent as summer approaches. Take the time to let some air blow into your schedule, and resist the urge to be constantly checking your list for accomp- lishment. If you’re more of a free spirit who basically lets both hands off the reins, try to put a little thought into summer on the front end. Set a few goals for the type of activities you’d like to pursue, the relationships you’d like to deepen, the trips you’d like to take. Make this a summer you’ll never forget. DISCUSS Talk about and decide what you want to accomplish by the end of August. PRAY Ask the Lord to establish your plans and help you see them through . . . with lots of fun to spare. as seen in Moments Together For Couples -<>- <*****> ."^". ,;;;, ."^". {.'^'.\//a a\\/.'^'.} {{ (( L )) }} {{ \ = / }} {{ .-'\`-`/'-. }} {{ / \_/ \ }} {{ / \ }} {{/ /| |\ \}} {| | | | | |} {\___| >===;=< |___/} {{(_/ | : | \_)}} {{ _/| : |\_ }} {{ _/ | : | \_ }} jgs {{/ | : | \}} `-` | : | `-` | : | | : | | : | |___:_| (_/ \_) >LISTENING TO THE SHEPHERD Author H. W. McLaughlin tells of visiting Israel and talking to an old shepherd. Thinking about Psalm 23, McLaughlin asked the shepherd how he used his staff to comfort and guide the sheep. The elderly man said that in the daylight he always carried it across his shoulders so the sheep could see it. Somehow this reassured them of his presence and protection. He further explained that if darkness overtook him before he had brought the sheep to a safe resting place for the night, or if they were caught in a heavy fog so that the sheep could not see the staff, he would walk slowly while tapping it on the ground. Although the sheep could not see the staff, they could hear its tapping, and they would follow the direction of the sound, knowing that their shepherd was just ahead of them. God's inspired Word is to the Christian what that staff was to those sheep, reassuring us of God's presence, protection, and provision by day and by night. Sometimes we see His leading from Scripture very clearly. At other times, however, we must listen with special care to God's Spirit as He speaks to us in the Scriptures. He will reassure us that our Shepherd, though unseen, is always with us. --Henry G. A simple moment kneeling down while then finding solid ground. The scenes around you will be changed a little less then so deranged. Through your prayer to God above you will find a lot of love. We lived in Halifax. They were seven hundred and sixty miles away in Montreal. Our meetings were few, but it was clear to me, I would have no use for mother-in-law jokes. Theresawas pure gold. I loved her instantly. My father-in-law was more of a challenge. Tibor had an overbearing personality, which he used to hide a soft heart. Few grew close enough to see his tenderness. Theresa and Tibor had a rough life. They immigrated to Canada during the Hungarian revolution. With two young girls in tow, they crossed a heavily guarded border into Austria and from there, immigrated to Canada, a country they knew little about. They sought peace and found it in Montreal. My mother-in-law suffered with cancer for a long time. In the years before I met Georgia, Theresa had both of her breasts, part of her stomach, and one lung removed. A tumor lay deep in her remaining lung - rare for a non-smoker. Chemotherapy kept the tumor small, but we knew her time was short. One summer, they visited us in Halifax. We left their hotel room on the last night of their visit. I glanced back. Theresa stood in the hall, staring after us. Her look of sorrow brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat. I knew what she thought, "Will this be the last time?" It wasn't the dying that scared her; it was the uncertainty of when. I stopped my Georgia and made her wait. I walked the distance to that small woman and hugged her tight. "Mom," I whispered, "You hang in there. Come back for the wedding. I want you there." The day of the wedding was hectic but joyous. Georgia and I stood face-to-face and said our vows. There was a tremble in my voice as I said mine. We were pronounced man and wife. I hugged my new bride, took her arm, and walked her down the aisle and into our future. Later, my mother-in-law said, "Michael, I heard your voice and saw your chin tremble. I knew you meant every word." At the reception we sat at the center of the head table. Numerous calls we made for us to show signs of affection. Someone would strike a spoon against the side of a glass. Everyone joined in. The clattering of spoons against glass grew. Georgia and I rose to our feet and kissed tenderly as our guests cheered. It was time for speeches. When it was my turn, I stood, turned, faced my new father-in-law, and raised my glass in the air. "Tibor, thank you! I thank you for your courage. Many years ago, you made a decision to flee your homeland, cross a guarded border, and make your home in Canada. This lady beside me was born in a far-away country and now sits beside me as my wife. It was your strength and courage that made this possible." With a trembling voice, I continued, "Tibor, thank you for giving me your daughter." The room was quiet, except for a few muffled sobs. The afternoon flew by. Georgia and I danced and hugged. Our friends congratulated us. At one point, I managed to find my mother-in-law alone. I crouched beside her chair and said, "Mom, you made it. I'm so glad you're here." She hugged me, "Michael, I am very happy. All I ever wanted was to see Georgia settled. Today saw it happen. I can go in peace." "Mom, hang in there." I said. "I want you to see your grandchildren." She looked at me doubtfully. "I'm happy now. I don't expect to see my grandchildren." I held her. "You'll see them, Mom. I just know you will." After the ceremonies, Georgia and I left for our hotel. I opened the door to our suite, turned, lifted my new wife in my arms, and turned to the door. It closed softly in our faces. I put her down, reopened it, picked her up again, and turned in time to watch it close again. I propped the door open with a trash can. I lifted Georgia in my arms, turned and watched the heavy door push the trash can aside and close again. A crowd gathered. They stood at their doors and watched in amusement as I failed time- after-time. "Michael! Never mind! Let's go in!" Georgia said. She didn't want the attention. "Hun, it's my duty to carry you across the threshold, and darn it, I'm going to do it." I left her in the hallway, entered the room, and slid a eavy chair against the door. I returned once more, picked her up, and carried her into the room. Those gathered, cheered and clapped. The clamor in the hall dimmed as the door closed a final time. I took my wife into my arms and into my life. My mother-in-law did live to see her granddaughter. Thirteen months later, our daughter was born. Tibor and Theresa drove from Montreal. Tears spilled down Theresa's cheeks. A year later, she passed on and lives forever in our hearts and memories. Georgia passed away October 10th, 2003. She's with her mom now. During the late 2002 holiday season, Tammy's Aunt Jess, who lives on the far eastern edge of town, got pneumonia. Though not elderly, she has asthma. She didn't ask for help until her doctor ordered her to stay home and relax. Jess wasn't sick enough to hospitalize, but the doctor wouldn't let her leave his office until he knew someone would be at home to care for her. Tammy's brother picked Jess up, but neither he nor Tammy's sisters could leave work for days. Tammy was the only relative with the freedom to stay with her aunt. James stayed with Jess until Tammy arrived, but he had to leave almost immediately. Since Jess had been feeling bad for a while, and there was almost no food in the house, so Tammy decided a shopping trip was in order. She made a careful list so that she wouldn't have to be gone longer than necessary. The grocery store was close, and she made great time, getting the groceries in fifteen minutes. After digging around in her purse at the checkout stand, Tammy realized she'd left her wallet on the table... back in her apartment. Everything was already checked out and there was a line behind her, so she was absolutely mortified as she apologized to the cashier and explained the situation. The cashier began to clear the order, but the gentleman behind Tammy spoke up. He looked at the total, handed the cashier his credit card with the bread and soda he was holding, and told her to add Tammy's groceries -- over $100 worth -- to his tiny purchase. When everything was checked through, the man pulled his soda and bread from the cart and walked away. Tammy snapped out of her shock and asked for his name and address to pay him back. He told her not to worry, he could tell she wasn't having a good day, and he was glad to help. He just kept walking. Tammy couldn't catch him, so she just went back to take care of Jess. A couple of weeks later when Jess was better Tammy remembered her grocery store savior. The only thing she knew about him was where he got groceries, so every chance she got, she took the one-hour drive back out to the store. She worked on her laptop in a cafe nearby and watched for him. It took a week and a half of "staking out" the grocery store before she saw him again. She stopped him as he was coming out of the store, and asked if she could buy him dinner to repay his favor. She told me she wasn't sure which was nicer: being able to repay his favor, or the surprise on his face at seeing her again! =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: _......._ :_ _: ,______ ''''''' ______, {_=_-=._'-. .-"""""-. .-'_.-=_=_} {-=_- `'.\ / \ /.'` =_-=} {-_= \\| (_((_(( |// =_-} {-_=- \( (* *) )/ =-_=} {_-=_=- ) ) ^ ( ( -=_=-_} {_=_-=- (_\ '-' /_) -=-_=_} {_-_=_ `) (` -_=_} {_-= .-`\ /`-. -=_} {_= / ^ \ =_} '-/ _.=. .=._ \-' \/_) ` (_\/ /\ /\ jgs / '. .' \ / '.' \ / \ / \ ';';';';';';';';';' | | | | | | |-|-| / / \ \ `"` `"` >THE FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY While at the pet store, Emerson, 5, asked for a guinea pig. Tim told Brandon, 9, that when Papa was a little boy he could take a quarter to the movies, watch the movie and buy a drink and candy. "Was that because they didn't have dollars when Papa was my age?" asked Brandon. Brandon, 9, and Cameron, 7, were chasing each other around the house, probably with the intent to do bodily injury to each other. Brandon fell into the wall and smacked his left wrist hard. He couldn't move his fingers and it started swelling right away. They put ice on it but it didn't seem to bring the swelling down. So another trip to urgent care. They took X-rays and nothing was broken just a bad sprain. Brandon was so impressed with the X-ray pictures of his fingers and hand, he asked Tim, "WOW! Are they going to mail them to the house?" When he learned the hospital was going to keep them he was very disappointed. He had illusions about being the hit at show and tell. Carol was looking in the bathroom mirror trying to remove an unwanted gray hair. When Brandon came in and wanted to know what she was doing, she told him.
