It's been a number of years since I've been in a classroom, and believe me, I've caught myself, more than once, reminding myself of my own advice. In some ways the most difficult part has not been the classroom, the curriculum, or the co-workers, but the children themselves. They are so angry! Every classroom seems to have more than one angry child, and the whole thing is heartbreaking. It's difficult in trying to pinpoint what it is that causes such anger, because they all come from such diverse situations. What we know about child development changes daily. Different times call for different tactics, and we are living in difficult times. Parents are all over the place with their children, some are involved, some are not. Some are raising their children, some are not! Some are getting it right, some are not! After one particularly bad day, I came home and decided the change that needed to be made was with me. I needed to "mold" not "pound." I had to show respect to get respect. I could not change the homes they came from, but I did have the power to change their self-images and self-worth. The next day as they came in, I made sure to speak to each child, and tell them how happy I was that they were there! And I meant it! I hugged, I held, and I listened. It was an amazing day. I was walking home later that day after work, with a few groceries I had picked up, and noticed some children in an empty lot close to my home. They ranged in ages from about 4 to 10, and the first thing I noticed is they had a shovel. I remember thinking that whatever they were doing they were probably up to no good. I shook my head and walked towards home. I was about to pass them when I heard one of the little girls start to sing Amazing Grace. And I am talking this child sang Amazing Grace, like she was at the feet of the Master. The other children joined in. I stopped and turned around. I took it all in -- the fresh dug grave, the wriggling puppies in their arms and realized I was witnessing a burial. No adult was around, and they did not miss a word of that song. I wanted to pull out my camera and set it to video and record it. It was beautiful, haunting! It will forever be etched in my mind. So will the lesson. As I walked away I smiled and thought, "Now those parents got it right!" -- Corrina Jayne Hyde __________________________________________________ Corrina lives in Atoka, Oklahoma and been a Heartwarmers member and writer for over 10 years. =========================================================== >-->From Daily Encounter: __ /_/\/\ \_\ / /_/ \ \_\/\ \ \_\/ unknown >True Beauty "But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'"1 In Western culture (at least) tremendous emphasis is placed on physical beauty. There's nothing wrong with being beautiful and keeping ourselves attractive, but if that's what controls our life, we will be left very empty inside--and even more so as the years take their toll on our body. I've worked with youth, young adults, and adults in general for many years and they all have something in common. When asked to list three things that make them beautiful, the majority of them have greatly struggled, because all they see are their physical flaws, when in reality that isn't what makes us beautiful. The exterior may make us attractive to some extent, but true beauty is much more than appearance. Things like kindness, generosity, positivity, bravery, and confidence are some of the numerous characteristics that truly make a person beautiful. Sophia Loren says that "beauty is how you feel inside, and it reflects in your eyes. It is not something physical." Sure that was easy for Sophia to say with her incredible physical beauty, but what she said was true. Better said, it would be, "True beauty is what you are inside." If we are only loved for our physical beauty, we will never feel truly loved because that is not the real person. As Saint Exupery said, "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye." Ralph Waldo Emerson put it this way, "Though we search the world over for the beautiful, we find it within or we find it not." According to God's Word, "Charm can be deceptive and beauty doesn't last, but a woman [or man] who fears and reverences God shall be greatly praised."2 Suggested prayer: "Dear God, please help me to be a beautiful person on the inside and so live that the beauty and love of Jesus will show and shine through me. Allow me also to embrace the person you have created me to be, and not get wrapped in the mindset of this world. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully in Jesus Christ's name, amen." 1. 1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV). 2. Proverbs 31:30 (TLB)(NLT). <:))))>< __ /_/\/\ \_\ / /_/ \ \_\/\ \ \_\/ unknown >Gentle Strength "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."1 "In her memoirs, an anonymous woman writes of her experiences as a field nurse in the Civil War. She worked for the Confederate forces, patching up dozens of wounded, sick soldiers every day. One day at the war's end, news came that President Lincoln would be visiting this Confederate field hospital. Many of the rebel soldiers were terrified of meeting him. Surely Lincoln was a monster, and he would treat the Confederate soldiers cruelly! But when Lincoln entered the hospital tent, he began to cry. He bent over the injured soldiers' cots and spoke softly to them. He patted their hands and stroked their hair, just as a father might do. And when he left, the men couldn't stop talking about what a good man he was. They had expected a tyrant, and found instead a kind and gentle and forgiving leader."2 In childhood days I used to believe that God was out to get me for any wrongs I might do. And, if I committed big or bad enough sins, he might even kill me. Many times we are taught to fear God because of how he can punish us, instead of focusing on how much he loved us and has given so that we won't have to! Children are taught a God full of rules, but we sometimes leave out His great grace. It is true that God is against all sin and wrongdoing, not because he's out to zap us, but because he is truly a loving Father who wants to protect us from hurting ourselves and others--and to save us from the ultimate consequences of sin which is eternal death, which, in turn, is eternal separation from God, the author of all love and life. The fact is that no matter what you and I have ever done or have failed to do, God loves us with an everlasting, unconditional love. But he does want us to come to him for forgiveness and to help us live wholesome, meaningful, and loving lives. Suggested prayer: "Dear God, thank you that you love and accept me as I am, and that you also love me too much to leave me as I am. Please help me to know that I know that my sins are forgiven and that I have accepted your gift of eternal life. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus Christ's name, amen." 1. John 3:16 (NIV). 2. The New Birth, being born again of God's Spirit, is the first thing a person must do to be able to understand spiritual matters (i.e. the Word of God). We worry about the unknown future, we worry about our kids, we worry about our jobs, our finances, our loved ones, our health... the list goes on and on. But the truth of the matter is, worrying about these things will seldomly change the outcome. All we can do is do our best with what God has given us, live like imitators of Christ, leave the unknown in God’s hands, and live in the moment. I know that not worrying is easier said than done. This is something that I struggle with and must be very intentional about. I am also a multi-tasker and find it difficult to settle my mind and focus on just one thing sometimes, but this is something God is working on in me. A few days ago, I was once again reminded as my kids were playing at the park with some of their cousins. They had been running around and playing non-stop, but there came a time where I noticed my son sitting in the wood chips simply gazing up at the sky. I chuckled because he looked so distracted by his imagination, but later that day I asked what he had been looking at, and found out that he was intrigued by how the clouds stay in the sky and move so slowly. He had been silently taking in the greatness of God’s creation. While these acts of stillness many times go unseen, I noticed and heard God speaking to me... “Be like a child." My young son trusts that all his basic needs will be met, so none of those things are reason for worrying. He can enjoy the special times in life and live in the moment. This is how God wants us to trust him. With the innocence of a child. If God provides and cares for all the creatures and wildflowers, then he will certainly do the same for us. And if God can hold the entire universe in place, imagine what he can do with our problems and worries when we leave them in his hand. As today’s verse reminds us, our days are counted and worrying won’t add more time. But if we are not careful, we will let the days go by missing the blessings God has given us because we spent our time worrying about what we could not control. Suggested prayer: “Dear God, thank you for the constant reminder of your faithfulness. Allow me to be still and learn to live in the moment. Life is such a gift, that many times we take for granted. Help me find joy in the midst of the problems and trust that you care for me and will provide what I need when I seek you first. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus Christ's name, amen." 1. Matthew 6:25 & 27 (NLT). Mazzella I am always amazed at how many miracles there are in this life. Everywhere you look there they are. They are in the first flower that pokes its head up in the Spring. They are in the singing of the birds and music of the frogs as the sun sets and the world turns to night. They are in the parting of the clouds and the magnificent lighting up of the world that follows. They are in the golden sunlight that chases the grey and gloom away and fills the heart with joy. They are in nature, in animals, and in life itself. Most of all, though, they are in each one of us. Now many of you might object that there is a single miracle inside of you let alone countless ones. The truth, however, is that all of us have within ourselves miracles upon miracles. God loves us all and gives each of us the miraculous power to change the world with His love. We may not be able to heal the sick, but we can uplift their spirits with our caring and love. We may not be able to feed the world, but we can help to save the lives of one or two with our support and charity. We may not be able to take away the pains of life, but we can hold another up with our kindness and compassion as they face them. We may not be able to bring happiness to everyone, but we can share our happiness, optimism, enthusiasm, cheerfulness, and delight with everyone we meet. We may not be able to do the work of God, but we can help God do His work through us by sharing our love, joy, prayers, and oneness with Him. Don't miss out on the miracles within you then. Choose them, share them, and live them everyday of your life. God has sent us all on the miraculous journey called life and during it we touch countless other souls. Let us always bless them with the miracles of our love, joy, giving, caring, compassion, helping, and goodness. Let us never miss the chance to share a miracle. -<>- . : . . : | : . . | | | , \ | | / . ,-'"""`-. . How will the dolphins react to the individual's personality? To his or her disability? How will the child (or adult) react to meeting a dolphin eye-to-eye for the first time? And, the most important question, will this unique experience trigger something inside the student that will open his mind and allow new learning to take place? When we met Justin, we all wondered how these questions would be answered during his first dolphin encounter. His parents had arranged a two-week visit to Dolphin Research Center (DRC) to participate in our Dolphin/Child Therapy program. Justin had cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder. Cerebral palsy is a serious condition, causing paralysis or muscle weakness as a result of trauma to the brain. Typical symptoms, which range from mild to severe, include partial or total inability to walk, little or no speech production, seizures and generally impaired coordination. Justin had better motor skills and coordination than many children with cerebral palsy, but one primary difficulty he had was with speech. At three years old, he had not yet spoken his first word. We hoped that the interaction with Annessa (who we nicknamed Anna) would encourage Justin to speak at least some components of words. Justin was a beautiful child, with blond hair and green-gold eyes. When he joined the therapist, his mother and Linda (the dolphin trainer) on Anna's dock, Justin's small face was devoid of expression. It was very hard to figure out what he was feeling. Anna tried to engage Justin in play while he was on the floating dock, but he would only glance at her briefly then look away. We decided to place Justin in the water with Anna to see what progress could be made in that environment. Floating in the warm Gulf waters, Justin's mother held him in her arms as Anna slowly circled them. Justin's eyes locked onto Anna's movement immediately. Anna offered her dorsal fin and towed Justin and his mother gently through the water. Anna then approached Justin head-on, very carefully, and he reached out a pudgy hand to touch her snout. Anna inched closer. Justin then raised his arms and gently hugged Anna's big, gray face. They held this embrace for several seconds, then the eight-foot-long dolphin delicately eased herself backward, moving with incredible care, barely rippling the water's surface. Linda watched in awe. This was not a behavior trained to Anna, but a spontaneous gesture and offering from dolphin to child. Justin wore a solemn expression throughout the exchange, but immediately began vocalizing when Anna backed away. The therapist asked Justin to try to make specific sounds, such as the "B" sound in "baby," promising Anna's return if Justin attempted the new sound. Justin quickly caught on to the game and responded to the coaxing. After each sound he looked expectantly for his new friend Anna. She was ready and waiting with a kiss for him! As the lesson time came to an end, Justin was much more animated than when he started. After getting out of the water, he smiled and pointed around with excitement as his mother dried him with a towel. Suddenly, he wrapped his arms around her neck and quietly said into her ear his very first word. _ _.-~~.) _.--~~~~~---....__ .' . .,' ,'. . . . . . . . . .~- ._ ( ( .. .g. . . . . . . . . . .~-._ .~__.-~ ~`. . . . . . . . . . . -. `----..._ ~-=~~-. . . . . . . . ~-. ~-._ `-._ ~=_~~--. . . . . .~. | .~-.._ ~--._-. ~-. . . . ~-. \ .( ~~--.._~' `. . . . .~-. , `._\ ~~--.._ `. . . . . ~-. .- . ,'/ _ . _ . -~\ _ .. _ ~~--.`_. . . . . ~-_ ,-','` . ` ._ ~ ~--. . . . .~=.-'. /. ` - . -~ -. _ . - ~ - _ - ~ ~--..__~ _,. / \ - ~ . __ .. ~- ~~_. The doctor had a private practice and his office was nearby. Best of all, he favored "preventive and natural medicine", important to me as I seem to be allergic to half the substances known to mankind. Foods, chemicals, dyes, you name it, I'm allergic. I appreciated he was a small business owner, being one myself. I didn't have insurance, because one month of insurance cost more than I usually spent in three years at the doctor. (Even 25 years ago, policies for one person were extremely expensive.) So I went to see Doctor Tim. He was a great guy, very helpful, very respectful. Afterwards, the gal at the front desk printed out a bill for $80. As I was writing my check, Doctor Tim came up, took the bill, drew a line across it, and wrote in "$60.00". I was floored. "Look, he said, "If we bill an insurance company, it takes an incredible amount of our time, energy and money. Insurance companies don't pay the full amount of the bill, and it takes a long time for us to be paid. People who pay in the moment deserve to pay less, it's still better for us." "Wow, thanks!" I replied. Years later, Doc Tim joined a big medical business in my metro area, in charge of one of their offices. At that big business, still uninsured, I had to pay full price. Then one day the front desk clerk said, "If you're paying today, self-insured, there's 20 percent off your bill." Amazing. Next time I told Doc Tim, "Great news on the 20 percent off!" He said, "Let me tell you a story about that. "I went to meetings for two years, saying that I thought our self-insured customers deserved this. People finally agreed. But the computer guys said they had to change the system to accommodate it. Next meeting, same conversation. "Finally, after two years, I sent a bill out front with the instructions, 'Take 20 percent off, patient is self-pay." The front desk did just that. Soon my phone lit up with the billing department, 'Why did you do this?' "I told them I did it because they'd been talking about it for years, plenty of time to get it done, and I was going to continue. Within *one month*, the 20 percent off was in the computers, system-wide, for all our locations." Needless to say, my jaw dropped. One person, one conviction to do what was right, thousands of patients paying a more "fair" rate, probably still more money than insurance companies paid. Imagine how many people, how many families that would help over the years. It's probably been 10 years. I still don't see the doctor often. But when I do, there's 20 percent off my bill. On my behalf, and the thousands of people who don't know the story: Thank you, Doctor Tim. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From CupO'Cheer: _._._._.,-. And when they saw Him, they begged Him to depart from their region. Matthew 8:34 You would think that after the miracle of casting out demons from two men who had violently oppressed them, the people in the area would have said, "Jesus, You are the man! We love what you did! Now we can go back to the cemetery and pay our respects to our loved ones and put flowers on their graves. We wouldn't even go near there before. These guys were scary. Thank you, Lord, for coming to our community." But that is not what happened. Instead, they wanted Him to go away. Why? It was because Jesus was bad for business. Jesus had cast the demons out of the men and into a herd of swine that went over a cliff. I don't know if those who kept the herd were Jewish, because if they were, this was not a kosher thing to be doing. They had been making money off the pigs, and there was no more bringing home the bacon for them. It was the end of that story. So they thought, We don't like this. This is bad for our economy. Go away. For some people, Jesus is bad for their business. It is typically the kind of business that preys on human suffering—even contributes to it. And if you have discovered that Jesus is bad for your business, then you need to get another job. In the region of the Gadarenes, the people realized that Jesus wasn't good for what they did, and therefore, they wanted Him to go away. Matthew's Gospel tells us, "The whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged Him to depart from their region" (Matthew 8:34). So guess what Jesus did? He left. Jesus won't force His way into anyone's life, including yours. Have you invited Him in? Copyright ©2011 by Harvest Ministries. My son is one of those people. If he notices heaviness in the room, he will do just about anything to lighten the mood. We had been working with him to understand that there are appropriate times and places to do this, but sometimes he still struggled with it. So when his teacher called me over after a field trip one day, I got that sinking feeling. Every Christmas season, our Christian school takes different classes of kids to sing at the nursing homes in our area. This year, my son Jesse's class was going to visit with the residents. A smaller group was going to see the Alzheimer's patients. Jesse had been hand-selected to go into this locked unit. When the teacher called me over to discuss Jesse's actions after the nursing home visit, I simply didn't know what to think. My father- in-law, who had dementia, lived with us for a while, and I knew that Jesse understood what these people were going through, and how upset they could get if there was a commotion. But I also knew that he might try to help his friends feel happier if they were getting uncomfortable at the nursing home. The teacher told me that as the children were passing one door, they noticed a little lady sitting on her bed, watching them pass. Jesse saw her and, without asking, went into her room and gave her a hug. She started to softly cry, as did the teacher and several of the students. Seeing their tears, my tenderhearted son came out looking like a whipped puppy and asking if he did something wrong. The teacher simply asked, "What made you go in there?" "She looked like she needed a hug," he responded. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make her cry." Thankfully, the teacher wrapped her arms around Jesse and told him the truth. "Jesse, your arms were the arms of Jesus today. She obviously needed that hug. Thank you for loving her the way He loves her." -<>- __,,,__ ,-""-,-" "-,-""-, /,-' , .-'-.7.-'-. , '-,\ \( / _ _ \ )/ '-, { (0) (0) } ,-' / > .---. < \ |/ .-' \___/ '-. \| {, / ,_ _, \ ,} \ {, \ / ,} / ',\. Vitale If purring could be encapsulated, it'd be the most powerful anti- depressant on the pharmaceutical market. ~ Alexis F. Hope Against my better judgment, I visited the cat room at the shelter. Given free rein, I would have filled my pockets with kittens. It didn't help that my husband, John, and I had recently euthanized Abby, our seventeen-year-old black, orange, and white calico. From the day Abby joined our family, John said she was better entertainment than television. I saw how much he missed her. We took Abby's remaining food and litter to donate to the shelter and I ventured into the cat room, where three white-mittened black kittens climbed the cage bars and reached out as kittens often do. Sitting primly in the midst of the chaos of the three boys was their sister, a white, gray, and sand-colored calico, a pastel version of Abby. She looked like a real lady, not inclined to climb curtains and upset houseplants. I coaxed John to come and look at the little calico I had spotted. "If you want the cat, get the cat," he said. I took her out of the cage and handed her to him. "What's this smudge on her nose?" He rubbed her nose with his thumb and then handed her back to me. "If you want the cat, get the cat." "That's not dirt on her nose. It's a little spot of gray fur. Do you want to think about it over the weekend?" "Here," said John as he reached for his wallet. "She may be gone on Monday." Smudge promptly proved me a bad judge of kitten character. Her prim lady act in the shelter cage could have garnered an Academy Award. One evening we heard her crying but couldn't find her. Somehow she had opened a bathroom vanity drawer, climbed in and wiggled until it glided shut. Several days later, she opened the same drawer, but this time it didn't shut. It blocked the door and barricaded us out of the bathroom. We kitten-proofed the drawers. She pulled towels off the rods and piled them in the sink to use as a comfy bed. She hid her toys in our slippers at night, pushing them down into the toes so we would have a real wake-up call in the morning. John encouraged her wild behavior, like her racing up and down halls and stairs that we dubbed "the evening zips." He would put her in a plastic grocery bag and drag it on the floor. She loved it. Several weeks after Smudge's adoption, severe back pains felled John. Medication and rest did nothing to improve his condition. After two weeks, he could no longer go to work, even for a short time. Stoic, John spent the day lying on quilts on the den floor. Before I left for work each morning, I would assemble a box of Smudge supplies: sheets of aluminum foil for John to make into balls, ping pong balls, shoelaces, and a yardstick notched for a string, to which John could tie ribbons or feathers for his kitten to chase. When I came home at noon to get John's lunch, I would crawl around to retrieve and re-box the Smudge supplies. John's condition worsened. Physical therapy exacerbated the pain that was misdiagnosed as sciatica. A month went by and the pain traveled to his leg as well as his back, and narcotics helped him rest at night. Smudge grew and slept with John on the floor. Tucking herself between his arm and chest, she snoozed when he did and played when he needed diversion. Several more weeks passed with additional X-rays, an MRI, and then the true diagnosis. The head of the femur was dying and collapsing in a condition called aseptic necrosis. He needed a hip replacement, but his loss of weight and muscle strength over the preceding months forecast a lengthy recovery. The day after surgery, John had a bad reaction to the medication and stopped breathing. After two days in critical care and further complications, his physical therapy was behind schedule. I stayed with him fourteen hours a day, sleeping in a motel near the hospital, dashing home to tend to mail and to check on seven- month-old Smudge. I would find her in the sphinx posture on John's recliner or on his quilts on the floor where they had spent the days. She ate but had no interest in her toys or in me. She mewed when I called to her but held her position on John's territory. I could have cried over her obvious distress at the change in her life. Ten days after surgery, John was transferred to a nursing facility closer to our home to catch up on rehabilitation. The next morning I walked into his room. "Good morning," I said. "Where's my cat?" he answered. I felt cold fear. Was there lack of oxygen after surgery? Did he have brain damage? Didn't he know where he was? "John," I began quietly. "Smudge is at the house. You're in a nursing home." "I know that," he said. His eyes had a touch of the old mischief in them. "I checked. If a pet has all its shots, it can come and visit. Go get her." I raced home, grabbed health papers, put Smudge in her elastic harness and then in her carrier. The harness would ensure I wouldn't be chasing her down the hall or fishing her out from under the bed. But how would she react? Would John be upset if she panicked? I put the carrier on John's bed and opened the door. Smudge crept out cautiously. John spoke to her and extended his hand. Smudge walked up to him, sniffed his face, and then lay down at his side between his arm and chest, just like she did during those long weeks on the floor at home. She spent the next four hours on his bed catnapping with him, chasing a ribbon, and amusing the staff. John's blood pressure dropped to a near normal level. He needed fewer pain pills. Smudge made several more visits before John came home to continue treatment as an outpatient. It was May. Smudge had been his emotional therapy since January. A month later John was back on his garden tractor. And Smudge? She is now six years old and regularly clears counters of anything she is capable of moving. Jar lids become hockey pucks on the hardwood floors. Shake out a plastic bag and she leaps into it for a ride, still not in the least inclined to be a lady. as seen in Inspiration Plus To SUBSCRIBE: Send an e-mail with SUBSCRIBE CUP O'CHEER in the subject line. ========================================================== >-->From LaughAndLift: The modern attitude is, "Father, forgive us for we know not what we are doing - and please don't tell us!" - Erwin W. No longer do you pay at the exit as you leave. They have signs prominently displayed that read, "Please be prepared to pay at the end of the line." I thought that was pretty profound. In fact, I think those signs should be displayed everywhere. You may just be cruising through life now, but "Please be prepared to pay at the end of the line." Spiritual things may be the last thing on your mind now, but "Please be prepared to pay at the end of the line." You may be using, abusing, and ignoring people to get ahead now, but "Please be prepared to pay at the end of the line." We all need to be prepared to pay at the end of the line. For those that have trusted in Jesus as the Lord of their life, when they get to the celestial cash register, they can state with confidence, "I'm with the Jesus party," and the attendant will say "Paid in full!". (Unfortunately, that didn't work at Wyatt's last night.) All others will try to search their pockets for the correct amount of change only to come up short. They are the ones who did not heed the sign. -<>- "There are three kinds of givers -- the flint, the sponge and the honeycomb. To get anything out of a flint you must hammer it. (By Roy Irwin) [Edited] My wife and I were hiking with our nieces and nephew recently at a local park. We followed the marked trail until we came to a clearing in the forest. In the distance, we could hear the faint sound of a train. Looking around, we spotted a set of railroad tracks just a few hundred feet in front of us. We decided to run to the tracks and get a closer look at the approaching train. As we ran toward the railroad tracks, we could hear the sound of the train getting louder as it got closer to us. The closer we got to the tracks, the louder the sound of the train. It became a race to see which of us would get to the tracks first! As we made it to the tracks we realized that something was wrong. The sound of the train indicated that it was upon us. However as we looked down each side of the tracks we could see no train! Everyone had a puzzled look on his or her face as we each tried to piece together the puzzle that was before us. Suddenly we spotted the train! However it wasn't on the tracks we were standing beside. To our surprise there was ANOTHER set of tracks a few hundred feet away that we had not seen that our mystery train was riding on! We were following the wrong set of tracks! As the train continued on its journey, we had to laugh! We had been so convinced that we were standing by the right tracks. We saw the sights and heard the sounds yet ultimately the train never came down the railroad tracks we were following. The same is also true in life. I am reminded of those who say that all paths lead to heaven. Whether they are talking about religions, philosophies or works, what they are saying is that each of these 'tracks' will guide someone to heaven. It may sound good; it may look correct; but just as we discovered while hiking, the train only comes down one set of tracks. If the destination is heaven - the only 'tracks' that lead to it are Jesus Christ! Jesus said in John 14:6 "...I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (NIV). Jesus didn't speak of alternate paths, contingency plans, backup methods, or works of equal merit to get to heaven - only Himself. The shed blood of Jesus Christ by His death on the cross has made it possible for our sins to be forgiven, making it possible for us to go to heaven. He alone purchased our 'ticket' and laid the tracks that lead to heaven and Himself. All we have to do is follow it. "Dear Lord Jesus, you alone are the way to heaven. You offer to each of us the gift of eternal life in heaven. No one can give a gift except the one who purchased it. Help us to remember that while it is a free gift - it was purchased at a very high price - by your death on the cross for our sins. Thank you for making it possible for each of us to experience eternal life in heaven with You. Amen." (Copyright 1998 Argyle Giraffe Productions.
