They are both talented high school seniors. They both love basketball. They are both captains of their respective high school basketball teams. But on one Saturday night in February, they were forever linked in the minds of all who were present for a mutual act of courage, sportsmanship and respect. The remarkable moment came during a game between Darius's small town Illinois team and Johntel's big city team in Wisconsin -- a game that almost wasn't played. Just hours before tip-off Johntel's mother lost her five-year battle with cervical cancer. Her death was sudden and devastating to all who knew her, and Johntel's coach wanted to cancel the game. But Johntel insisted that the game should be played, and so with heavy hearts his teammates prepared to honor their captain's wishes and to play -- and hopefully win -- without him. What they weren't prepared for was Johntel's appearance in the gym mid-way through the first half. As soon as he saw him, Johntel's coach called a time out, and players and fans surrounded the grieving young man to offer love and support. The coach asked him if he wanted to sit on the bench with the team. "No," Johntel said. "I want to play." Of course his team was thrilled to have him. But because Johntel wasn't on the pre-game roster, putting him in the game at that point would result in a technical foul and two free throws for the opposing team. Johntel's coach was OK with that. He could see that this was the teenager's way of coping with his loss -- the points didn't matter. The opposing team understood the situation and told the referees to let Johntel play and to forget the technical foul. The referees argued that a rule is a rule, and the free throws would have to be taken before the game could proceed. For possibly the first time in basketball history, officials had to force a team to accept and take the technical free throws. As team captain, Darius volunteered to take the shots. One would have expected he was looking for an opportunity to keep his team close in a hard-fought game against a big city school. Or one could even assume he wanted a chance to add a couple of points to his personal statistics. In either case, one would be wrong. Darius took the ball from the official, looked at the basket and calmly shot the ball. Now, basketball purists know that the free throw line is 15 feet from the basket. Darius's first shot only traveled about 4 feet. His second shot only traveled 2. Immediately Johntel and his teammates understood what Darius was doing. They stood and applauded the gesture of sportsmanship as Darius made his way back to his bench. So did all of the big city fans. "I did it for the guy who lost his mom," Darius told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel after the game. "It was the right thing to do." For those who are concerned about such things, Johntel's team rode the emotion of the night to a 15-point victory. But as the two teams met after the game for pizza and sodas, nobody on either side was too concerned with wins or losses or personal stats. "This is something our kids will hold for a lifetime," Darius's coach said. "They may not remember our record 20 years from now, but they'll remember what happened in that gym that night." -- Joseph Walker ========================================================== >-->From Our Friend Linda :) ))) ((( +-----+ | |] `-----' James Christopher Goodwin ___________ `---------' >Coffee On The Wall I sat with my friend in a well-known coffee shop in a neighboring town of Venice, Italy, the city of lights and water. As we enjoyed our coffee, a man entered and sat at an empty table beside us. He called the waiter and placed his order saying, “Two cups of coffee, one of them there on the wall.” We heard this order with rather interest and observed that he was served with one cup of coffee but he paid for two. When he left, the waiter put a piece of paper on the wall saying “A Cup of Coffee”. While we were still there, two other men entered and ordered three cups of coffee, two on the table and one on the wall. They had two cups of coffee but paid for three and left. This time also, the waiter did the same; he put a piece of paper on the wall saying, “A Cup of Coffee”. It was something unique and perplexing for us. We finished our coffee, paid the bill and left. After a few days, we had a chance to go to this coffee shop again. While we were enjoying our coffee, a man poorly dressed entered. As he seated himself he looked at the wall and said, “One cup of coffee from the wall.” The waiter served coffee to this man with the customary respect and dignity. The man had his coffee and left without paying. We were amazed to watch all this, as the waiter took off a piece of paper from the wall and threw it in the trash bin. Now it was no surprise for us – the matter was very clear. The great respect for the needy shown by the inhabitants of this town made our eyes well up in tears. Ponder upon the need of what this man wanted. He enters the coffee shop without having to lower his self-esteem… he has no need to ask for a free cup of coffee… without asking or knowing about the one who is giving this cup of coffee to him… he only looked at the wall, placed an order for himself, enjoyed his coffee and left. "Oh, excuse me please" was my reply. He said, "Please excuse me too; I wasn't even watching for you." We were very polite, this stranger and I. We went on our way and we said good-bye. But at home a different story is told, How we treat our loved ones, young and old. Later that day, cooking the evening meal, My daughter stood beside me very still. When I turned, I nearly knocked her down. "Move out of the way," I said with a frown. She walked away, her little heart broken. I didn't realize how harshly I'd spoken. While I lay awake in bed, God's still small voice came to me and said, "While dealing with a stranger, common courtesy you use, But the children you love, you seem to abuse. Look on the kitchen floor, You'll find some flowers there by the door. Those are the flowers she brought for you. She picked them herself, pink, yellow and blue. She stood quietly not to spoil the surprise, And you never saw the tears in her eyes." By this time, I felt very small And now my tears began to fall. I quietly went and knelt by her bed; "Wake up, little girl, wake up," I said. "Are these the flowers you picked for me?" She smiled, "I found 'em, out by the tree. I picked 'em because they're pretty like you. I knew you'd like 'em, especially the blue." I said, "Daughter, I'm sorry for the way I acted today; I shouldn't have yelled at you that way." She said, "Oh, Mom, that's okay. I love you anyway." I said, "Daughter, I love you too, and I do like the flowers, especially the blue." Are you aware that: If we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of days. But the family we left behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into work than to our family - an unwise investment indeed. --Author Unknown -<>- _________________________ (, ______________________ ) | | || | | @@@@ || @@@@ | | @@@@@@@ || @@@@@@@ | | @@ - - || - @@@@ | | @ c/ || '_ @@@ | | _@| |_ || __\@ \@ | | ( \ )/_\ /_ || _\\ (/ ) @\_/) | | \ \|) / \) || |(__/ / /| | | |\_/ ( -/ || \___/ ----/_| | | / \ || ,: '( | | : _/| || |: \ | | : | || |: ) | | : | || |: | | |_______'____,_|_______|| |_____,_| .---('________________________)--. | / ( |____ __________ _| | /\ ) |___| -o- | |__| -o- | ( \| / |___| -o- | |__| -o- | | /'=. b'ger|________| |__|______| '=>/ \ / \ /|/ ,___/| >REFLECTIONS You know, time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. And yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all... And I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams... But, here it is..the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise... How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my babies go? And where did my youth go? I remember well... seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like... But, here it is...wife retired and she's really getting gray...she moves slower and I see an older woman now. She's in better shape than me... but, I see the great change... Not the one I married who was young and vibrant... but, like me, her age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be. Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore...it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will...I just fall asleep where I sit! And so, now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things. But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I'm not sure how long it will last...This I know, that when it's over...its over....Yes , I have regrets .There are things I wish I hadn't done ,,,,,things I should have done. But indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done Its all in a lifetime.. . So, if you're not in your winter yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Life goes by quickly So, do what you can today, because you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for good today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember... "Life is a gift to you. No, I never saw him in person. I do know he was born in a log cabin, I read about him studying by candlelight, splitting rails as a young man, grieving over the death of the love of his youth, and then becoming an unlikely political leader. And then the dark days of trying to hold a nation together during the Civil War, and then, his tragic death just five days after the end of that war. His name, his life, his face - they're known around the world. But only a couple of years ago, I learned something about Abraham Lincoln's life that really thrilled my heart. I read a Lincoln scholar's description of him making a personal commitment to Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. It was during one of the darkest days of the Civil War, and God used a surprising person to lead Abraham Lincoln to saving faith. Abraham Lincoln, in the most powerful position in the world, was introduced to the Savior by the White House seamstress; a precious black woman with a deep faith in Jesus Christ. Now, imagine Abraham Lincoln, the legendary President of the United States, brought to Jesus by a seamstress. But maybe that's not such a surprise. See, when someone serves you, they have a unique, non-threatening, trusted position in your life - perhaps the most powerful position in the world for real. Which leads us to our word for today from the Word of God in 2 Kings 5, beginning at verse 1. We're talking about Naaman, a great military commander of Syria, but it says he was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy. Bands from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman's wife. She said to her mistress, "If only my master would see the prophet who was in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy" (vs. 3). As it turns out, he does go to the prophet, and his leprosy is healed. Naaman went to his master and told him what the girl had said. And the king said, "By all means go" (vs. 5). So he goes out and finally gets his cure. Here's the most powerful military figure maybe in that part of the world, being told where the answer is by a little Jewish servant girl. But he listened, just like Lincoln did. Now there's an important and encouraging secret here. If you're going to be in a position to get through to someone spiritually, be their servant. Being a servant to someone is the most powerful position in the world. Can you think of someone you're spiritually concerned about? I hope so, because Jesus has called you to be His ambassador. Think about this question: how could I serve him or her? How could I be there for him, for her? Sharing Christ isn't just a matter of dumping the Gospel on someone. You need to get in a position where they'll listen to you. You need to win the right to be heard. Serving that person may mean listening a lot before you start giving answers, helping them when they're sick, when they're hurting, when they're broke. Maybe it will mean looking for moments of need, and then quietly finding a way to lighten their load. God will show you a way to serve, and serving will open the way for you to tell that person about your Jesus. Remember, it was a servant girl who was in the best position to lead Naaman to the cure. I'm so thrilled that Abraham Lincoln is in heaven because of a woman who served him faithfully and served her Savior faithfully. There is no more disarming, powerful position on earth than to live as a servant in someone's life - and as the personal ambassador of Jesus Christ to the person that you're serving. But it is my constant anxiety and prayer that I and this nation should be on the Lord's side." In 1864, some former slaves in Maryland presented Lincoln with a gift of a Bible. Lincoln replied: "In regard to this great book, I have but to say, it is the best gift God has given to man. All the good the Saviour gave to the world was communicated through this book. But for it we could not know right from wrong. All things most desirable for man’s welfare, here and hereafter, are to be found portrayed in it." The pastor of a church in Freeport, Illinois, in November 1864, said that a man from Illinois visited Lincoln in the White House and, after conducting other business, asked the president if he loved Jesus. The pastor said, Lincoln buried his face in his handkerchief as tears came to his eyes, and then answered: "When I left home to take this chair of state, I requested my countrymen to pray for me. I was not then a Christian. When my son died, the severest trial of my life, I was not a Christian. But, when I went to Gettysburg and looked upon the graves of our dead heroes who had fallen in defense of their country, I then and there consecrated myself to Christ. Yes, I do love Jesus." Lockwood Joyce Schowalter New York, USA My two-year-old daughter and I often get smiles from strangers as we walk through town with Clara riding in her backpack, singing and swinging her feet. I felt extra grateful for my sunny little girl on one walk at the end of April, 2006. Just three days before she woke up from her nap with a fever of 106 degrees. We spent a traumatic evening in the emergency room. Any parent or child is frightened by such an experience. So it was a great feeling that Clara was so happy that day. We were heading home from a local grocery store, which wisely gives out free balloons to children. Clara always looks forward to getting a balloon there. She had done an especially nice job being patient at the store, after waiting a long time for a prescription. She was thrilled when the selection included pink balloons. Pink looms large in her philosophy, especially these days, since the antibiotic she is taking for the infection that caused the high fever is bubble-gum pink. Clara was singing "Mister Golden Sun" to her balloon, as we walked under a tree, when POP! There went the balloon. Clara immediately burst into tears. "My pink balloon popped!" She has had many balloons before, but is always very careful with them. This was the first time she experienced this minor trauma of childhood, and she was inconsolable. A college-aged young man, about 21, with light brown hair, who was walking behind us noticed Clara's tears. He was clearly preparing for an important date, as he was carrying a bouquet of a dozen long-stemmed roses. He stopped and talked to Clara. "Your balloon popped, that's very sad." "What's your name?" Unfortunately, Clara was too shy and upset to answer, but I filled in for her, touched that a young guy, probably hurrying home to get ready for a date, would stop to comfort a little child. "Clara is a pretty name," said the young man. "Would you like a flower? It's pink, just like your balloon." Clara was still crying inconsolably, unable to say that she would really like the rose. The young man said jokingly, "Uh-oh, I'm in trouble if girls don't like these!" He tucked a pink rose into Clara's backpack, and went on his way. Shortly after the young man was too far away to hear, Clara said "Thank you for my rose," in a quiet voice. She carried the rose in her hand the rest of the way home, finally waving at the young man, who was much too far away to see. A block later, Clara was singing to her flower. Somewhere in Ithaca, a lucky young lady is receiving a bouquet of eleven roses. I hope she asks why one is missing! =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: * * _ /\ * ___. / `) * //\\ /\ ///\\ / / ///\\\ //\\/\ ////\\\ / / /\ ////\\\\///\\/\\.-~~-.///\\\\ / / //\\ /////\\\\///\\/ `\\\\\\/ / ///\\ //////\\\\// / `\\\\/ / ////\\ ///////\\\\\// `~` /\ /////\\ ////////\\\\\/ ,_____, ,-~ \\\__//////\\\ ////////\\\\/ /~| |/////| |\\\\\\\\@//jro/\\ //< / /|__|/////|__|///////~|~/////\\ >THE FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY Cheryl always signs her letters and cards to the grandkids with X's and O's. Her mother told her that she could wash the front of the car because she wanted to keep her away from the fumes. An older truck drove by that smelled bad and Aleena asked, "Mom, what's that smell?" Then Aleena peeked around the corner and asked the lady beside them, "Was that ou?" -- Tamra (Aleena's mom) of Blue Springs, Missouri _ // // __/( _.~-a ~-. {_____) `. _..=~~~~=._ ~-_ \ _.=~ '=. \ `._.=~ .=. :=._ - __ ( \ : \) ~. Caroline, 3, said, "There is my grass! Hello grass, I'm going to walk on you!" -- Kim (grandmother of Caroline) as told to Amy Parker of Butler, Pennsylvania When Amanda was 3 her grandmother was trying to teach her table manners. Donna told her she had to say excuse me to get up and leave the table after dinner. Without missing a beat she stated, "I did not belch!" -- Donna M. Bryan (grandmother of Amanda) of Indianapolis For an extra treat after dinner the Schreiners let their three girls have a small bowl of ice cream. Every time they have ice cream someone always asks for more, even though they know the answer will always be "no." So, as Tiffani dished up the final bowl she said with mock frustration, "Alright, if anyone asks for more this time, they have to do an extra job." A little while later Ember, 6, said, "Mom, I want to do another job." (They quietly gave her a little bit more ice cream and she still wanted to do her extra job!) -- Tiffani Schreiner of Bloomington, Minnesota Michael, 3, asked to say the blessing for lunch. They bowed their heads and Michael began: "God is great. God is good. Let us thank Him for ..." The pause was long. Just as Patsy was about to prompt him, her Audubon bird clock began singing. Michael immediately finished with "let us thank Him for the singing birds! Amen!" -- Patsy Shinn of San Antonio, Texas __.--'~~~~~`--. .. __. .-~ ~-. At that time she was really into Disney videos, especially Beauty and the Beast. She was simply awestruck, craning her neck to take in all the art deco buildings they have in Tulsa. Finally with total amazement in her voice she asked in almost a whisper, "Mama are those ... c-a-s-t-l-e-s?" -- Pamela, Sand Springs, Oklahoma Sarah's family enjoys feeding and watching songbirds and they had taught Sarah the names of most of them. One spring evening they had just finished dressing her as Jasmine for her preschool ballet recital. She ran outside to swing for a minute. About the time they came outside a large carpenter bee was buzzing about the porch/swing area and she yelled across the yard in a concerned tone, "There's a woodpecker bee!" ========================================================== >-->From Our Friend Fran :) reICareI reICareIC ICareICareICar ICareICareICare reICareICareICareI reICareICareICareIC CareICareICareICareICa reICareICareICareICareI ICarICareICareICareICareI ICareICareICareICareICareI ICarICareICareICareICareICare CareICareICareICareICareICare ICareICareICareICareICareICareI CareICareICareICareICareICareICa ICaICareICareICareICareICareICareI ICareICareICareICareICareICareICar eICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICar ICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICar ICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareIc eICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICa ICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareI reICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICare ICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICa reICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareIc ICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICareICare reICareICareICareIICareICareICareICareIca ICareICareICareICareICareICareICarICa reICareICareICareICareICarICare areICareICareICareICareICa ICareICareICareICare areICareICareICa eICareICareI -Grim CareICar reIC eI >WHAT You Are Your Heart is your Love, Your Love is your Family, Your Family is your Future, Your Future is your Destiny, Your Destiny is your Ambition, Your Ambition is your Aspiration, Your Aspiration is your Motivation, Your Motivation is your Belief, Your Belief is your Peace, Your Peace is your Target, Your Target is Heaven! --Author Unknown --- ...Love this one!
