But every year there are those who remain, Looking only for friendship nothing else to gain. They have stayed by me through good and bad, Smiled when I am happy held me when I've been sad. After so many years you begin to realize, That a friend is life's greatest prize, Not the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, That we seem to seek where ever we go. So as I grow older and begin another New Year's Day, I will thank God for those friends He sent my way. And my New Years resolution will always be, To thank Him again for every breath of life He's given me. Then I will pray He will show me the way, Give me wisdom and guide me through each day. And most of all at the end of each year, Keep by me those friends I will always hold so dear. And as I make new friends I'll treasure the old, For the first are silver the latter gold. by Janet Ritchie © 2002 --- ...You Are MY Greatest Prize! You know how hard it is for adult children to select gifts for their parents. After all, what do they want and/or need, really? Flannel shirts and ties had been given in abundance over the years, and since he'd retired, shopping became even more difficult. He was passionate about photography, but I wouldn't have had the slightest idea of what sort of equipment he might like. He was a marvelous gardener, but the tiny garden at their row house in Philadelphia (before they were known as town homes) had no need of plants or seeds in December! I had discovered a wonderful cookbook called Visions of Sugarplums, by Mimi Sheraton, and decided to make something for him from it because it contained recipes from all the countries that celebrate Christmas. He was of Czech descent, and the recipe for a sweet, braided bread containing almonds sounded perfect because he loved anything I made, and he also had a sweet tooth. We purchased all of the ingredients, and my husband numbered the braids in the illustration so we'd be able to keep them straight. It smelled divine as it baked, and I was thrilled with its crusty golden color when I removed it from the oven. We were living in Ohio by that time, so I packed it carefully with their other Christmas gifts and sent it off to Philadelphia. I was not prepared for its reception. My father called with lavish praise for the bread, saying he couldn't believe his eyes when he opened the aluminum foil. With great emotion, he told me that when he and his brothers were very young boys, it was traditional for the bread -- called vanocka -- to be prepared every Christmas Eve. I had given him back a beloved childhood memory, all without thinking! Legend said that every living being in the house had to partake of the bread before midnight of Christmas Eve, for luck. So all the dogs and cats, the occasional mouse, and whatever other creatures lived under their roof had to have a morsel. That year, my husband and I began a tradition for our sons by preparing a vanocka for our home, as well. Cats and dogs were treated to a bite, much to the delight of our young sons. I made the bread each Christmas until my father died. That year, I just couldn't bring myself to make it because it brought back memories of how happy I'd made him with such a simple gift, and it broke my heart that he would no longer enjoy it. I haven't made it in the several years since. But this year, I'm going to have flour dust all over my kitchen again, and the scent of baking bread and roasted almonds will fill the air. Our youngest son and his wife will be sharing Christmas with us, and it's time to remember the joy a humble loaf of bread unwittingly brought to my daddy. -- Bobbi Hahn __________________________________________________ Bobbi is a freelance writer, poet and calligrapher who lives with her husband and two cats beside a lagoon on a barrier island off the coast of South Carolina. She says, "The book is still available, so if you're looking for some marvelous, traditional Christmas recipes, find a copy! It's amazing how similar some of the recipes are from one country to another, differing only by a few ingredients. One country might use almonds, another walnuts. I love these traditions!" =========================================================== >-->From Our Friend Jacinto :) ______ '-._ ```"""---.._ ,-----.:___ `\ ,;;;, '-.._ ```"""--.._ |,%%%%%% _ , '. `\;;;; -\ _ _.'/\ .' `-.__ \ ,;;;;" .__{=====/_)==:_ || ,===/ ```";,,,,,,,;;;;;'`-./.____,'/ / '.\/ '---/ ';;;;;;;;' `--.._.' / ,===/ '-. `\/ '---/ ,'`. | ; __.-' \ ,' jgs \______,,.....------'''`` `---` >Mother, Don't Cry, I am Not Hungry All are not lucky like us. It was a crude cross, constructed when someone was in deep grief. It wasn't pretty, but it's meaning was clear. The cross made a point. Someone died at that crossroad. Someone lost their life. Family members marked this spot to signify their loss. A couple days ago, as I went through this intersection once again, I saw an older couple. They had a new and very beautiful cross to replace the old one. They worked hard to erect the new memory of their lost loved one. Their work honored someone they loved. I admired their effort ...their love. I don't want that for me when I am gone. I don't need a marker. I don't need a headstone. I want to live on in your memories, my laughter and jokes to be remembered, my hugs to always be felt. I want my marker on your heart. -Michael T. Smith --- ...Thanks Fran! Perhaps that is why we do what we do with all our sharing and caring towards others - we want to leave a marker on the hearts of those we care about and hope we have touched their lives in some way to be in their remembrance. We may not be rich to give much money to help deliver people in need, but we can give some love and happiness through our forwards to perhaps make a little difference in their lives. Leaving behind a legacy of sorts - a marker on their heart. That's my goal with my web site and group list. Alka-Seltzer is made up of aspirin, citric acid, and baking soda which make it not only useful for medicinal purposes but a great cleaning product as well! Here are some OTHER uses for the “plop, plop, fizz, fizz“ you might not know about (I sure didn’t!): Safely Unclog A Drain A great natural solution for unclogging the drain! Just drop four Alka-Seltzer tablets down the drain, followed by a cup of white vinegar and allow to stand for about ten minutes. Flush with a pot of boiling water. Doing this on a regular basis can help keep that drain clear. This also works to deodorize the drain. Clean a Toilet In A Hurry Drop two tablets in the toilet, wait 20 minutes for the citric acid to loosen the grime, scrub and flush. The bowl will be clean, shiny, and deodorized. Handy for a quick clean in case of uninvited, unannounced, surprise guests. An All-Purpose Cleaner Alka Seltzer can also be a good all around cleaner. Plop three tablets into 8 ounces of warm water. Once the fizzing stops, dip a sponge in the water (or you could fill a spray bottle) and wipe down counters, tiles and tubs. You can even place some in your sink and use as mop water. Just add five tablets to one half gallon of water. Soothe Insect Bites Drop two tablets in warm water, then soak a cotton ball in the solution. Place on the bite for 30 minutes for relief from the insect bites. Catch a Fish Fish love bubbles. Break a tablet in half and throw it out near your fishing line, or put a tablet inside your tube jig and cast off. The fish won’t be able to resist the stream of bubbles. Remove Burnt On Food From Bakeware Drop 5 tablets into a sink full of hot water and let your cookware soak for an hour or so. The burnt food will come off with ease. Whiten and Brighten Your Laundry To get rid of dingy yellow color on white cotton, soak your whites in a solution of a gallon of warm water and two Alka Seltzer tablets. Then hang your whites in the sun to dry to get rid of any lingering stains. Deodorize the Fridge For a clean, fresh smelling refrigerator, drop an Alka-Seltzer tablet in a cup of water and leave it in the refrigerator for a half hour. If there is still a smell in the refrigerator, then wash down the inside of the refrigerator with another Alka-Seltzer tablet in water. Clean a Glass Jar, Flower Vase or Thermos For those difficult to clean vessels with narrow-necks, and hard to reach places, drop two Alka-Seltzer tablets in, add hot water and swish it around until the tablets are dissolved and let it sit for an hour. Rinse, and the glass jar, vase or Thermos will be as clean as new. Restore Stained Plastic Containers Got spaghetti sauce stains on your plastic containers? Simply fill your container with warm to hot water and depending on the size drop 1-2 tablets into the water. Let sit for 30 minutes and the stains will disappear before your eyes. Polish Your Jewelry Drop two tablets in a bowl of warm water. Let your jewelry soak for about 20 minutes. It will look new again! (Note: This is not safe for pearls or opals.) Build Rockets For Kids Entertain little ones by heading outside with an empty film canister, filled halfway with warm water. Drop in half a tablet, snap on the lid and place the canister upside down on the sidewalk or driveway. Take a step back and watch your rocket blast off! Clean Your Coffeemaker Fill the water chamber of the coffeemaker and then drop in three tablets. When the Alka-Seltzer has dissolved, put the coffeemaker through a brew cycle. This will clean out all the internal components. Run through another plain water cycle before using the machine again for coffee. Help For Nicotine Addiction If you’re trying to quit smoking Alka-Seltzer can help. Take two tablets three times a day to relieve nicotine withdrawal symptoms and curb cravings. Cure Urinary Tract Infections Showing signs of a urinary infection? Take two tablets in a glass of water as soon as you notice symptoms. Results are almost immediate. Keep in mind that Aspirin is a main ingredient in Alka-Seltzer so those with Aspirin allergies shouldn’t use it. Clean and Deodorize A Cooler After an outing or trip, add about 1 inch of water to the bottom of your cooler, drop 4 tablets in, and let sit for an hour. After an hour, rinse and dry. All smells will be gone and it will be clean and ready for its next use. Clean Dentures Drop an Alka-Seltzer tablet into a glass of warm water, and then drop your dentures into the glass for about ten minutes. The citric acid and carbonation will remove the toughest stains from your dentures and other prosthetic dental work. This is an excellent substitute for more expensive denture cleanser products. --- ...Sweet reminder! This year, as with every year, I will be handling all of your problems. Please remember, I do not need your help. If the devil happens to deliver a situation to you that you cannot handle, do not attempt to resolve it. Kindly put it all in the SFJTD BOX. (Something for Jesus to Do) It will be addressed in my time, not yours. Please be patient. Once the matter has been placed in the box, do not hold onto it. Do not become impatient and take it back to see if you can find a solution. Holding on or removal will delay the resolution of your problem. You must surrender the problem to Me for proper resolution. If a situation you think you cannot handle arises, please consult Me in prayer. Together we will come up with proper resolution. That means disposing of useless papers and unused stuff but also throwing away old grudges. The prevalence and durability of grudges proves Maya Angelou’s observation that people don’t always remember what you said or did, but they do remember how you made them feel. Grudges are nothing more than toxic memories of how someone made us feel. But Confucius taught that “To be wronged is nothing unless we continue to remember it.” So why do so many of us choose to consciously preserve and revisit toxic feelings that detract from our happiness? Perhaps we fool ourselves into thinking we can inflict some sort of pain on the person who wronged us. In fact, holding on to a grudge is like holding on to a hot stone. It doesn’t hurt the stone or the person who gave it to us; it only hurts the one holding it. Carrying a grudge is like being stung to death by one bee. It doesn’t matter how justified the bitter feelings are or how right we are. Holding on to a grievance turns pain into suffering. In a peculiar way it empowers the wrongdoer to hurt us again and again. So start out this New Year by giving yourself a great gift. Muster the good sense and strength to root out and release deep-seated and long-held resentments. If you can, forgive and forget. I heard of a man who occasionally swallowed coins -- enough to make him sick! Which, as it turns out, was the whole idea. When asked why he made himself sick swallowing coins, he replied that he enjoyed the affection and attention the staff showed him in the hospital! He was lonely. Many of us are lonely. When asked, "What is life's heaviest burden?" one lonely old man answered, "To have nothing to carry." A cure for loneliness is to carry the burden of another. Get involved with their problems. Visit others who are also lonely. Listen to someone else's troubles. Find people who need you and do something for them. Carrying another's burden will lighten the load of your loneliness. I know a woman who gave each person in her family a golden angel lapel pin one Christmas. "Wear it on your collar or shoulder," she said, "to remind you that your guardian angel is always looking over your shoulder." Her brother noticed his pin had a broken wing. He held up his damaged angel and quipped, "It figures. My guardian angel is missing a wing. She can't even take care of herself!" Two years later he died of cancer. As I thought of the pain his family must be feeling, I was struck with how his broken angel is like each of us. We each hurt. We all experience loss. At times we are lonely. Like that angel, we are each broken in some way, even if our damage is interior and invisible to others. But we're each like his broken angel in another way, too. As it has been so beautifully said, "We are all like angels with just one wing. We can only fly by embracing each other." You see, we will heal best by hanging on to one another. And we will overcome loneliness best by putting an arm around someone else and going it with them. This family embraced each other. And as they carried one another's burdens, their own loads were lightened. It's a solution for loneliness -- and a formula for happiness. I was lost. Suddenly I heard a load noise and I was blind. Everything was white. An hour, or maybe a minute later I reached out and touched white and it resisted, then quickly became soft like a cloud. It folded and dropped. The air smelled burnt. Understanding dawned: airbag smoke. An accident? I lowered the automatic windows to let smoke out and warm air in. I thought, "Don't be afraid." Then an angel appeared, next to my window. She was dressed in white, with a white scarf across her throat and down her back, rather like folded wings. She spoke in a soft voice. "Are you OK?" Yes. "Are you drunk?" No. "High?" No. "Can you drive?" Yes. "You must leave now." What?! -- I'm lost. "Listen you must roll up your windows. Can you do that?" Confused, I fumbled for controls in the unfamiliar rental car, noticing young men gathering around the passenger side. Though thinking rolling up the window might appear rude to them, I did as I was told. I was no longer a professional woman in control of her life. I was a middle-aged woman-child in a strange city at night in a scary situation. I was vulnerable; at the mercy of strangers. "Your back window is down. Roll it up!" she commanded. She raised her voice, "Nothing for you to see. Everyone's all right. I'm handling this." She asked where I was going; I gave the hotel's name. She turned to a shadow who looked like he wanted to escape. "He'll give you directions". From the other side came, "Hey lady, I can tell you how to get there." She said, "Don't listen to them." To them, she said "I'm taking care of her, you don't need to hang around. There's nothing to see." Her escort nervously gave me directions. She made me repeat them. Then, "If you can drive, go! Now!" I thanked her and went! Finally in my hotel room, I began to shake. Was I really in danger? She and her companion believed so. She put herself at risk to help me, a stranger. And by confronting the young men, made herself the focus of attention instead of me. How easy it would have been for her to look the other way, watch from the sidewalk or call 911, tell herself she'd done her part and walk away. What courage it to confront the men she obviously regarded as dangerous. I think of her as an angel. That thought struck me when I saw her next to me in her white dress. But I know she's more than an angel, she's an extraordinary woman of courage, who put herself in danger for a complete stranger. I often wonder if I can measure up to the standard she has set, if I'm called upon to be an angel for someone else. I can only hope that the memory of her courage will be enough. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: >THE FUNNIEST THINGS KIDS SAY -=====- -=====- _..._ _..._ .~ `~. .~` ~. ,_ / } { \ _, ,_\'--, \ _.'`~~/ \~~`'._ / ,--'/_, \'--,_`{_,} -( )- {,_}`_,--'/ '.`-.`\;--,___.'_ _'.___,--;/`.-`.'
